IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE! Who would ever have thought it?! This is not a ‘normal’ year, but all the more important to mark the positives, and The Licensing Awards certainly give lots of good reasons to smile. Despite the inherent challenges this ongoing period has presented, the character and entertainment licensing community has most definitely done itself proud on the product, retailing, property, marketing and promotional fronts and as such we were determined to find a way for the Awards to happen. Thanks to the wonders of technology, the entering and judging all took place online this year and the Awards Ceremony (and pre and post celebrations) are hosted on the impressive Hopin digital platform. We have been really touched by the wholehearted support from everyone, embracing the move to a virtual event. Every single sponsor has shown their true colours – having no hesitation in all pledging their commitment so that the awards could go ahead. Licensees and licensors found the time to enter, hundreds of retail buyers spent hours and hours scrutinising the entries, and leading industry members put their competitive natures to one side to participate in the Validation Panel discussions. There was no way even a pandemic was going to stop The Licensing Awards 2020 from taking place – it has just called for a bit of adjustment in the entering and judging processes as well as the event itself! So, a new online portal went live, 3,500+ licensed products were entered and approaching 200 retail buyers logged on to judge them; a trio of new awards made their debut, while Validation Panels of industry experts met virtually to carefully consider the nominations in the retailer, marketing, promotions and sustainability awards categories. Here we reveal how we have made the most of the virtual world to make The Licensing Awards 2020 a reality.
THE JUDGING PROCESS A trio of new awards
The Product Award Categories
This year’s Licensing Awards programme welcomes three new award categories – The Sustainability Product Award, the Best Licensed Live Event Award, as well as Best Overseas Retailer of Licensed Products, the latter being for a retailer who has a presence in the UK, but their main business is overseas.
Licensees and licensors were invited to enter licensed product ranges that had been launched into UK retail (or significantly modified) in year June 1 2019 to May 31 2020. All entries had to be licence-specific (ie based on one licensed property) and each entry could be for a range, rather than a specific item. The responsibility of judging the entries to the Product Award categories of The Licensing Awards 2020 lay in the collective hands of this year’s judging panel. (The only exception to this is the Sustainability Product Award which was judged by a panel including environmental experts). This year almost 200 different retail buyers (from right across the retail spectrum and from different buying disciplines) formed the official judging panel for the main product categories. This year’s Judging Panel comprised buyers from Asda, Ann Summers, B&M Stores, Bourne Leisure, Card Factory, Chester Zoo, DFS, Dobbies, Drayton Manor, Dreamland, Dunelm, El Corte Ingles, The Entertainer, FatFace, Firebox, Forbidden Planet, Gamestop, Geeky Chic, Groupon, Halfords, Hamleys, HMV, John Lewis, Jojo Maman Bébé, Joules, Lakeland, M&S, Mackays, Matalan, Merlin Entertainment, Moonpig, Morrisons, Mothercare, Next, Paperchase, Paultons, Prezzybox, Primark, River Island, Sainsbury’s, Selfridges, Stamfords, Tesco, TJ Morris, The Very Group, Waterstones and The
All about the Awards The Licensing Awards, (which are owned and organised by Max Publishing, owners of The Licensing Source Book and LicensingSource.net) recognise and reward excellence right across the licensing spectrum - in licensed merchandise, retailing execution, licensed property management, marketing promotions, live events as well as an Honorary Achievement award for a special individual who has contributed greatly to the industry. In addition, for the fifth year running The Licensing Awards also encompass the Licensing International UK Rising Star award, which shines the spotlight on young licensing professionals under 30 years of age. Arriving At The Finalists Works as well as some specialist independents. All retailers who are part of the BLE Retail Mentoring programme were also invited to join the judging panel. The judging for the product categories took place online over the course of a few weeks. Each judge logged on to consider each entry in every category. The submissions included several images of the product as well as salient information, such as RRPs. The judges considered the entries against the criteria of the excellence of design, innovation and originality; consumer targeting and quality of manufacture and packaging. They then individually selected what they deemed were the six best entries in each category. Points were awarded accordingly; six points were assigned to the entries judges felt were the best in the category down to one point for the sixth choices. The points from all the judges’ forms were then amalgamated to arrive at the winner and the finalists for each category.

The Retail Award Categories The finalists in the retailer award categories were arrived at as a result of an exhaustive nomination/self-nomination process. Manufacturers, suppliers and importers of licensed products were invited to state, in their opinion, which three retailers have excelled in their retail delivery of licensed merchandise to the public in the year to 31 May 2020. The consolidated results of this nomination process were presented to a Retail Validation Panel comprising 20 top industry experts (both licensees and licensors), chaired by Richard Pink (managing director of Pink Key Licensing).

The Property Award Categories Licensors and brand owners were invited to enter the Best Licensed Property Award categories by making online submissions to a dedicated website. The submissions demonstrated how well the property had performed over the last year against a set of criteria. A wide panel of knowledgeable licensees and retailers (from a number of different disciplines) were also invited to give their confidential votes for what they consider have been the top licensed properties over the last year. These votes were then validated by industry experts.

The campaign could cover any kind of promotional communication, including TV advertising, poster campaign, on-pack promotion or sponsorship for any product or service related to a brand other than the licensed property itself. It could cover the promotion of a charity. To qualify for inclusion the licence involved had to be promoting the use of another product or service.
