CALENDAR NEWS
READ IT HERE FIRST
Welcome to the 2020 edition of Progressive Calendars, celebrating the raft of product launches, news galore and coverage of The Calies calendar awards.
Klopp at the top It is not just in the football Premiership that Klopp’s team was out in the lead, as the 2020 official licensed calendar from Danilo scored goals at retail with the title taking the number one slot in the publisher’s Calendar Chart. With Manchester United being the only other sports calendar title to make it into the ‘Top Ten’ (ranking in 6th place), the other entries are a mixture of entertainment and music brands. Making the grade for the first time, in second and third slot respectively is Stranger Things (the most watched Netflix series ever) and popular Korean boy band, BTS. Among the other new entries are BBC series Peaky Blinders (in 9th place) and Disney movie Frozen 2 (in 5th place). The Danilo Calendar Chart of 2020 titles (Last year’s position in the chart shown in bracket) 1. Liverpool Football Club (1 in sports calendar chart) 2. Stranger Things (NEW entry) 3. Little Mix (5)
Calies Awards celebrated the best in the business The Calies 2019 awards event, which took place on 19 November at London’s Stationers’ Hall, was definitely worthy of an entry ‘in the diary’ as calendar and diary publishers of all shapes and sizes were duly feted in the UK’s only dedicated awards for calendars, diaries and Advents. Among the delighted winners of the third Calies awards were Abrams & Chronicle Books, Allan & Bertram, BrownTrout Publishers, Carousel Calendars, Danilo, English Graphics, Rose Calendars, Seedlings Cards & Gifts, teNeues Calendars and Wrendale Designs. The Calies are organised by Max Publishing, with the full support from the calendar and diary sector. “The Calies not only celebrate the excellence and innovation that exude on the product front, but also serve to champion the product area giving the sector greater visibility and credibility which is so valuable in these challenging times,” stated Warren Lomax, joint md of Max Publishing. Hazel Walker, senior buyer of Waterstones, shared her insights on the market in an engaging pre-awards speech before handing over to comedian Stuart Goldsmith who hosted the awards ceremony peppered with his quick-witted observations. Providing an emotional crescendo to the awards’ official proceedings, industry stalwart Nigel Green, owner of Eight Days a Week was presented with the prestigious Calendar Ambassador Award 2019 for his commitment and passion for the sector over many years. (See page 12-15 for all the winners and pics from the Calies) Above: Max Publishing’s Warren Lomax (right) presented the prestigious Calies’ Calendar Ambassador 2019 award to Nigel Green, owner of Eight Days A Week (middle) with host Stuart Goldsmith (left) looking on.

CALENDAR NEWS Pabuku’s licensing growth Austria-based greeting card publisher Pabuku is set to build on its success on the card front with teNeues joining Carousel Calendars as licensing partners featuring the brand’s distinctive look. Carousel Calendars has the licensing rights for calendars and diaries for the UK market, the recent signing with teNeues is for the rest of Europe, the US, Japan and Australia. Commenting on the attractions of the brand, Martin ReesDavies, product and licensing lead of Carousel Calendars said: “The Pabuku brand offers designs that are very different from anything on the market, yet at the same time very ontrend. This is a collaboration that we are really excited about and also want to bring our environmental credentials with uncoated papers and plastic-free product to fully endorse the brands and Carousel’s values.” Above: Pabuku’s quirky artwork will be available as calendars and diaries for 2021 from teNeues and Carousel Calendars.
BrownTrout to distribute Abrams calendars Andrews McMeel Publishing (AMP) has entered into an agreement with Abrams to print and distribute its calendar programme, beginning with the 2021 calendar season. Through its current relationship with AMP and the existing distribution line from Universe, BrownTrout now has the UK and Ireland distribution rights for these calendars too – previously held by Chronicle Books UK. The company sees huge potential for the UK market for the vast and eclectic Abrams portfolio, with the list including renowned titles such as: The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario and Donkey Kong. Jack Straw, managing director of BrownTrout commented: “We are all great fans of the Abrams line of beautiful calendars and diaries, so when the opportunity arose to take control of the distribution for our territory, then it was an easy decision to say 'yes, please'. It complements and adds hugely to what we are already doing.” Above: BrownTrout, through its relationship with AMP, will be distributing Abrams’ eclectic mix of calendar titles for 2021.
NEWS IN BRIEF l Danilo ventured into the wonderfully colourful world of Comic Con for the first time, which took place at Birmingham NEC in mid November. Danilo’s limited edition calendars, gaming calendars, Star Wars and Marvel titles performed particularly well. “After the feedback we received, I am certain we will broaden our offering and be even more successful on our next Comic Con adventure,” says Martin Carter, creative director of Danilo. Right: It’s hard to tell, but Darth Vader does look pleased with Danilo’s 2020 Star Wars calendar!
l Carousel Calendars continues on its plastic detox, with the company saving 4000kg of plastic on its 2020 calendars by removing plastic from the standard box page-a-day calendars. The company has also replaced the outer shrinkwrap on a selection of wall calendars for an easily-recyclable cardboard envelope and its diaries remain unpackaged. Above: A selection of Carousel wall calendars now come in a cardboard envelope.
l It’s been a very exciting year for Seedlings Cards & Gifts with new staff, new premises and its first ever Calies Award for Best Animal Kingdom Calendar (for its Deluxe Wildlife Edition Seed Calendar). “Having gone from essentially a one-person band to a small team, we have developed our product range and have lots of exciting things in store for 2020, which also marks our 10 year anniversary,” says Sarah-Jayne Mercer, owner of Seedlings. All of Seedlings’ calendars come with 12 packets of wildflower seeds. Above: Seedlings won a Calies award in 2019 for its wildflower calendar, coming with 12 packets of seed.
l
BrownTrout has had a very positive response to its new licensing deal with The World of David Walliams. BrownTrout managing director, Jack Straw, explains, “With each new David Walliams fiction title going straight to No.1 in the charts in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, the opportunity to transfer this into calendar sales is not to be ignored.”
Above: BrownTrout is bringing the World of David Walliams to life in a new range of calendars.
l Pomegranate has a new logo (right) that will be rolled out in 2020, along with a new tagline: Art. Ideas. Community. The contemporary redesign of the Pomegranate logo reflects the company’s heritage by modernising the long-standing, traditional calligraphic logo while retaining the swash of its ‘t’. l Danilo has made two new appointments recently, Angela Anderson joined as sales director last October, and Eddie Dunk became ecommerce manager prior to that. Angela has a wealth of experience from the greetings card industry at Hallmark and Tesco and has worked closely with Danilo on greeting cards previously. In his new role, Eddie will be helping Danilo implement its growth plan for the website channels - a key focus for the company going forward. RETAILER FEEDBACK
TALKING SHOP With another Advents, calendar and diary selling season over, retailers have crunched the numbers and reflected on what sold well. Progressive Calendars made a date to catch up with several retailers to find out how sales have been. Above: Calendar Club trades from temporary stores and stands from September through to January. Left: 90s nostalgia is strong, with the Friends calendar from Danilo coming in at number eight for Calendar Club. Below left: Liverpool FC from Danilo was the number one seller for Calendar Club second year in a row. Below middle: Wrendale’s diaries and calendars are the best sellers at House of Cards stores. Below: Busy B diaries are always popular with customers at John Lewis. Bottom left: House of Cards’ customers still see merit in keeping calendars ‘real’.
From the end of September to the beginning of January, 275 Calendar Club temporary sites were up and running across the UK and Ireland - from retail units to stands in the centre of shopping malls - collectively selling an astonishing four million calendars. Natalie Taylor, marketing manager for Calendar Club, muses on the most popular calendars sold this season. “As ever, it’s was year of flux for the ‘top 10’ that reflect what’s trending in popularity at the end of the year. Liverpool FC took the number one spot for the second year in a row, which corresponds with the team’s success in the Premier League to date. In total Liverpool has been at the top of the charts five times (2006, 2007, 2009, 2019, 2020) since we started recording bestsellers in 2000.” Football titles actually took four of the top 10 spots, with Manchester United picking up second spot, Tottenham Hotspur coming in third and Arsenal ninth. “Premier League football titles dominated the top three positions this season,” says Natalie. “This is largely down to the lack of a serious girl or boy band contender this year - Korean K-pop group BTS was the closest we came to a potential player and they finished in a respectable position of 19.” Dropping out of the top 10 this year was Little Mix, who have been in the top 10 in 2017, 2018 (number one) and 2019, but dropped back to number 15 this year. Natalie

comments: “Their success seems to correspond with tour years and tour start dates that are in line with the calendar season.” The retro vibe is edging its way into the calendar sales for 2020, which is reflected in the charts this year. “Nostalgia for the 80s and 90s is a trend across many categories, so it was no surprise that Friends came in at number eight and Stranger Things at number 21,” says Natalie. While Cliff has dropped out of the top 10, Elvis is holding his position at number five this year, exactly the same as last year. A new entry into the charts this year is the Birmingham TV hit Peaky Blinders launching at number seven. Despite a slight dip in popularity, Fortnite has held its own and

stayed in the top 10 at number six (number two for 2019). “And our literal top dog this year was the West Highland White Terrier, coming in at number 16,” says Natalie. At John Lewis & Partners it has been an “interesting season” according to Sarah Moughtin, junior buyer, stationery and seasonal events, with some brands declining and keen growth with others. “For diaries our customers have clear favourites that they repeat buy year after year,” says Sarah. “Busy B remains a popular choice for pretty designs with clear organisational layouts and prompts. We find Moleskine is perfect for a classic easy purchase.” On calendars, Sarah highlights how imagery is key to engage with the customer on an emotional level. “There was some beautiful photography this year from BBC Earth (Danilo) and National Geographic (Carousel) which really resonated with our customers,” comments Sarah.
Dated products are always a bit of a risk according to Pencil Me In’s owner, Sarah Holmes, which is why she is quite picky about what she stocks. “We need to ensure the layout is useful and practical, as well as looking smart,” she says. “We had a large A3 illustrated calendar from Jade Fisher which sold really well. It was a beaut. We sell a lot of planner products, including the MiGoals goal planners which we sold last year for the first time. I had used one in 2019 and loved the product. We complemented this new offering with a goal setting and planning workshop which was on 4 January and went super well. We had the new daily planners from Ohh Deer and we knew these were going to sell well, so made sure we had a lot of stock. We had diaries from Notable Designs, which we’ve had previously and are popular - there Above: Diaries from Notable Designs are top sellers at Pencil Me In. were just a couple left at the beginning of January.” For House of Cards, with six stores in the south of England, although the portfolio of titles stocked has reduced over the years the demand for physical calendars is still strong with its customers, according to co-owner, Nigel Williamson. “We try to find niche publishers to give our customers a choice that they won’t find everywhere on the High Street. Wrendale’s range is our best seller, particularly the A3 family organiser. It’s a popular format with lots of space to write appointments in.”
Above: John Lewis customers are habitual in their diary purchases. Right: House of Cards’ customers like the Carousel Calendars’ Spitfires calendar. Middle right: The Elephants calendar from Carousel Calendars’ National Geographic range sold well at John Lewis.
Carousel Calendars (part of the Otter House group) is another publisher with a wide range of subjects that chime with House Of Cards’ customers. “Birds are always popular, and this year the Spitfires calendar was a good seller for us,” says Nigel. On the diary front, it was Wrendale again that led the way with its slim diary, desk diary and flexi diary. “We do really well with these, the designs are lovely and customers like them.” Nigel’s gut feeling is that a lot of calendar sales have now moved to online, “as there is just so much choice. You name it, you’ll find a calendar for it! That’s why we tend to steer away from the licensed calendars, we can’t compete with the range you can find online. For us, it is the niche designs that sell well. And we get customers who come back each year to buy the same calendar again and again.”
Indie viewpoint: Dragonfly Cards & Gifts, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire Dragonfly Cards & Gifts stocks a curated range of calendars and diaries, with coowner Rachael Barnes commenting: “Yorkshire calendars are by far our most popular - both slims and squares, followed by Alex Clark Art’s dogs and cats. This year we sold out in record time and will be looking to increase quantities for 2021 titles. We will be producing our own Knaresborough calendar again and have been busy taking photographs all year to ensure that we have something relevant for each month. With diaries we just stock some organisers, plus pocket and slim leather bound diaries. We've had to reorder twice this year as we no longer have a stationery shop in town so are being asked for them more than ever.” Right: Alex Clark Art’s animal calendars go down well with customers at Dragonfly Cards & Gifts. THE CALIES AWARDS 2019
WALL TO WALL Left: All The Calies 2019 winners with their trophies as well as Max Publishing’s Jakki Brown and Warren Lomax plus host Stuart Goldsmith. Below: Comedian Stuart Goldsmith’s sharp observations and slick delivery went down really well at The Calies.
“Good for you all for standing up against the mighty Google, APPs, phone synching and all the other technological aids to keep track of appointments. Other industries might have given up, but not you lot! Calendars? On the wall or not at all!,” quipped comedian and commentator Stuart Goldsmith in his superb pre-ceremony performance at The Calies calendar and diary awards that took place at the end of last year at London’s Stationers’ Hall. But Stuart’s performance was not the only aspect that made The Calies 2019 a memorable date in the calendar. The awards event brought together retailers, calendar publishers, diary producers, Advent companies, licensors and trade suppliers to celebrate the creative excellence of the sector. Here Progressive Calendars relives the event in words and pictures. CALENDAR ‘ROCK N ROLLER’ A rousing high note of The Calies calendar awards was the presentation of The Calies’ Ambassador Award to Nigel Green, owner of Eight Days A Week, whose ‘start to finish’ calendar print management company is instrumental in the UK production of many leading brands, from Danilo to BrownTrout, Avonside to Pyramid. “The only thing that comes close to their love of the calendar industry is their passion for music - in fact we are lucky that The Calies didn't clash with any notable rock concerts or we might not have had him here,” jested Jakki Brown, joint md of Max Publishing building to the crescendo in the Ambassador Award. Building up to reveal the identity of the recipient, Jakki described him as is “the calendar industry’s own rock n roll star who even named his company after one of The Beatles famous songs!” She described Nigel as “Hugely but quietly influential, who knows everyone in the business and is liked and respected by one and all, as a true gentleman.” In his acceptance speech, Nigel gave his heartfelt thanks to the many who have shown huge loyalty to him and his business over the last 16 years. “None of this would have been possible,” Nigel said, without their support and friendship, paying special tribute to Laurence Prince (founder of Danilo), Jack Straw (md of BrownTrout), Steve Bicknell (md of Maverick), Mordy Benaiah (director of Pyramid) as well as David Higgins and Rob Paul (directors of Avonside Publishers). INDUSTRY ISSUE
COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS
Advent calendars have taken on a life of their own, now coming filled with anything from tea bags and hot sauces to beauty products and jewellery. But at the heart of it all is that excitement of counting down to Christmas, and, perhaps thanks to the popularity of luxury Advents, the sales of traditional Advent calendars are stronger than ever before. A recent YouGov poll showed that just under half of Britons (49%) opened an Advent calendar during the month of December in 2019. And, although chocolate filled calendars are still the most popular, 13% of those surveyed had calendars filled with beauty products. And the price tag doesn’t put shoppers off - the Liberty Beauty Advent calendar costs around £200 each year and sells out within days. But moving away from such luxuries, the market for a traditional Advent calendar is also growing as Emily Chivers, marketing manager for Alison Gardiner explains: “We began making traditional Advent calendars in 2010 and realised how much people enjoyed having a traditional Advent calendar. We’ve noticed a lot of changes in the last few years, the market is very competitive, not only from new ideas such as gin and beauty Advent

calendars, but there is also a lot more choice when it comes to traditional, paper designs.” As with any market, innovation is the key to growing business and Alison Gardiner is always on the look-out for something different, such as 3D Advent calendars. “We made our first 3D Advent calendar in 2019 of Highgrove House and it has free-standing characters and Below left: A revolving carousel is one of the new 3D make-your-own models from Caltime by Woodmansterne for 2020. Hear the music Danilo’s product portfolio really was ‘all singing all dancing’ in 2019. A collaboration with My Design Co (known for its Music Box cards and Cracker Cards) saw Danilo launch a trio of innovative licensed musical Advent calendars. The Snowman, Frozen II and The Gruffalo’s Child Advents had children building up the scene gradually over the month, with stickers and magnetic stand-up characters found behind each dated door. Each calendar comprises three magnetic characters that can be placed on the base’s moving mechanism enabling them to glide around the scene as the music plays. a Christmas tree which can be placed around it. The doors are also all over the house too so you have to really search to find them.” Another exciting addition to Alison Gardiner’s 2019 range came from Coppenrath (which Alison Gardiner also distributes), a musical gramophone player with 24 mini vinyl disks (reaching the finals in The Calies 2019). Again, it is the consumer’s desire to seek out something more traditional that is driving sales of Caltime by Woodmansterne’s Advent range. “We strongly believe that the interest and subsequent growth we are seeing from our Advent calendars is related to consumers wanting to retain and rekindle the tradition of Christmas and due to healthier lifestyle choices, choosing a traditional Advent calendar, rather than a chocolate one,” says Andy Paterson, sales director of Woodmansterne. For 2020, Caltime is releasing three new 3D make-your-own theatrical models - a nativity scene, a traditional town house and a revolving Carousel. A relative newcomer to the Advent market is Ling Design, which launched its first range of Advent calendars for Christmas 2018, which proved popular with customers, selling out very quickly. “In response we increased our selection for 2019, adding more designs and two 3D options to provide an option that really stands out in store,” says Amelia Strawson, marketing manager at Ling Design. Art Angels Publishing is another company doing well with traditional Advent calendars, and director Chris Cordingly is always looking for alternative and original ideas. “We like to work on ideas with artists who wouldn’t normally consider an Advent calendar as part of their oeuvre,” he says. “This has been a big year for Advent calendars, the market has been growing steadily over recent years as our selection widens. Christmas Cottage by Angela Harding has been most popular this year, but the whole range continues to sell well.”

It’s all in the detail The surreal imagery in The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch continues to fascinate viewers 500 years after its creation.
