WELCOME The soaring influence of brands continues unabated and the continued evolution of brand and lifestyle licensing is very much part of this. The B&LLAs, now in their fifth year, have become recognised as true accolades of excellence - fitting recognition for the verve, passion and inspired activity within this dynamic arena by licensees, retailers, brand owners and licensing agents.

ere we are…finally at The B&LLAs 2020! Admittedly, we’ve had a couple of false starts, but not enough to dampen the spirits of the licensing community. Who would have ever thought at the start of this year that we wouldn’t be allowed to hold our usual lovely social lunchtime event in April…or indeed in July… or even in November, but you just can’t keep a good industry down! And what better great excuse to drink with your friends and colleagues on a Monday night than The B&LLAs. One of the benefits of holding this awards’ event virtually is that we are not constrained by the four walls of a physical location. This means that The B&LLAs will be watched by many more members of the brand licensing community, from all around the world, than ever before. (This certainly bodes well for some lively action in The B&LLAs’ Session Rooms, both pre and post the awards ceremony!) Unbelievably, this is the 5th year of The

B&LLAs and the ensuing years have seen the awards grow in stature, completely in line with the dynamic evolution of the sector. And this progress is the very reason that, despite the regulations imposed by the pandemic, there was no way we ever contemplated cancelling The B&LLAs. The entries themselves and the resultant finalists’ line-up is just so impressive that their achievements irrevocably deserve to be recognised. The licensee product innovation, retailing excellence and strong licensor programmes of all of our contenders collectively paint such a rich tapestry of so many brands, licensees and retailers who have embraced brand licensing like never before. We really are so thankful of The B&LLAs sponsors who have been with us since the start, as well as to those leading companies who have shared in our B&LLAs’ vision to celebrate real engagement in branding licensing activity and come on board too, especially during our imposed transition to a digital awards’ event.

You are in for an extra treat…Keen to perpetuate The B&LLAs’ popular tradition of a pre-awards’ speaker we were so happy when the incredibly inspirational Nadiya Hussain, whose talents go way beyond her culinary skills, agreed to share her story from amateur baker to the development of her own licensing programme. Nadiya, as one of the finalists of The B&LLAs 2020, adds some extra icing on the cake of the brand licensing sector of which you are all a part and should rightfully feel very proud. Enjoy devouring your rightful slice of it with this year’s B&LLAs 2020 awards extravaganza! IN THE MAKING Just as the building of a brand involves much careful thought, judicious planning and some nerve-racking decisions, so the awards event which champions brands’ licensing success should match this consideration so as to uphold the values and high standards of those we celebrate here today. These are only the fifth ever B&LLAs, however thanks to the incredible support and input from the brand licensing and retailing community, these awards have become firmly established as true accolades within the brand licensing arena. While the awards’ event this year is taking place virtually, we share the very real process that has gone into making The B&LLAs 2020.

WELL-BAKED INSIGHTS

G

reat British Bake Off winner, author and TV presenter, Nadiya Hussain shares her story from being an amateur baker to a well-loved household brand at the B&LLAs 2020. In a peppy interview, just prior to the awards ceremony, Nadiya reveals to Samantha Loveday (editor of LicensingSource.net and Licensing Source Book) why baking is her happy place, her inspirations and how she truly feels about her journey into the brand licensing arena. Nadiya talks about her involvement with the design of the licensed products which bear her name and development it’s so important that any licensed products remain authentic to the brand they promote.

FULL OF VOICE Just as so many of the finalists are completely ‘in step’ with the tastes of the nation, so the B&LLAs official finalists’ announcer ‘lines up the balls’ perfectly for those watching the awards ceremony. His voice is already known to millions, thanks to his involvement with Strictly Come Dancing and being the ‘voice of the balls’ for the National Lottery, and now, Alan Dedicoat adds his vocal endorsement to The B&LLAs 2020.

THE BUILD UP THE ENTERING AND JUDGING PROCESS The entry process for all the B&LLA categories - product, property, retailing and brand ambassador awards - was undertaken completely online through a dedicated website. Entering The B&LLAs was free of charge for all. Distinct judging and nomination panels were formed to undertake the judging of the different categories. While key retailer buyers judged the product categories, input from licensors/brand owners as well as licensees were sought for the retailer categories. Meanwhile, licensees and retailers were not backwards in coming forward on their views as to which licensed brands had risen to the heights over the last year. All sponsors were asked to record themselves ‘opening the winner’s envelope’, with a version for each finalist so they were not burdened with keeping a secret!

SITTING IN JUDGEMENT

ROOM WITH A VIEW

The high calibre of B&LLAs 2020 product entries demanded a judging panel to match – and the vast array of retail buyers who cast their respective scrutinising eyes certainly ensured that the worthy contenders rose to the top. This year’s B&LLAs product categories judging panel included buyers from Asda, B&M Stores, Character.com, DFS, Groupon, HMV, Home Bargains, John Lewis & Partners, Lakeland, Laura Ashley, Marks and Spencer, Matalan, Moonpig, Next, Sainsbury’s, Selfridges, Tesco and Truffleshuffle.

With the avenue of physical schmoozing blocked off, the creation of Session Rooms at The B&LLAs means the enjoyable and all-important meeting up with friends and colleagues has been made possible. While many sponsors, leading brands and retailers have booked their own Session Rooms, the vast majority are very open to anyone who wants to just drop in ‘for a drink and a chat’ prior to or post awards ceremony. As the Rooms are easily accessible from the main awards event platform area there is bound to be plenty of banter going on til late.

SPREADING THE LOVE The B&LLAs PR maestros at Kilogrammedia and social media experts BumpPR joined with B&LLAs’ owners Max Publishing’s own media channels (notably LicensingSource.net and Licensing Source Book) as well as other supportive media partners, such as Total Brand Licensing, in helping to spread the word about the awards. All attendees are invited to post their pre, during and post B&LLAs’ photos, to #Bellas20, with the Twitter feed this year being sponsored by emoji.

THE TRIUMPHANT TROPHY While the awards’ event is being held virtually this year, every single winner will receive a tangible trophy. Exuding the elegance of the Art Deco era, with the strong stylised lines and pewter finish, is the trophy for The B&LLAs 2020. Mick Worwood, owner of Conceptual Creations, worked closely with Max Publishing, owners of the B&LLAs, to arrive at the final stunning design which has become a real status symbol of brand licensing excellence. The trophies were sculpted by Garry Goodman, a highly respected British

sculptor and model maker, before being cast before the pewter finish is polished in Conceptual Creations’ UK studio. Mick, is no stranger to licensing, having been very active in music licensing scene when it was still in its infancy. “My first licensing deal was with Rolling Stones in 1973,” says Mick. But his claims to fame go much bigger than this, include coming up with the idea (and being heavily involved in its creation) for The Wall Live, a Pink Floyd performance in Berlin to celebrate the wall coming down.

INSPIRED INNOVATION BRAND LICENSED PRODUCT OR RANGE AWARD OPEN TO: This new award recognises truly inspired product creation involving a brand licence. Entries could be for a single product, range (of any type) or experiential in nature. It can involve collaborations, but a brand licence (non-entertainment) has to be part of this. The entered product had to have been on sale or visible in the UK between 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2019, though it can have had a presence elsewhere in the world too. All entries were judged on their inspirational innovation. Products/ranges could be entered into this award as well as in another category – or it could be for something that doesn’t quite fit existing categories due to their inspirational nature.
