Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg made headlines twice last year. Now an ambassador for the Mercedes F1 team, Rosberg talks about F1 and life after F1 Words By: Claire Bloomfield

Do you think Mercedes will be victorious for the fourth consecutive year?

Mercedes is an incredible team. They are the best ones out there. But the rules are totally different now, so everybody has to start from zero and build their cars to these new regulations. Nobody knows what will happen.

I think the biggest threat at the moment is Red Bull, because the relationship with Adrian Newey has worked incredibly well for the past 20 years or so.

How did you keep going with two years of huge disappointments prior to winning the F1 crown last season?

Thanks to those difficult moments that I’m sitting here as the world champion. I really fought through them and managed to come out of those dark moments with even greater motivation. That’s what happened in Austin in 2015 when I lost the championship to Lewis [Hamilton]. It was very tough because I put my whole life into trying to win on that racetrack but I found motivation that I didn’t even know I had.

Were there any strange moments for you to be in a different role this year compared to your previous years?

Well, it’s a big change in my life, for sure.

There are definitely going to be some strange moments. I think that’s natural. One of them, for example, was seeing social media posts

by Valtteri Bottas where he’s sitting together with all my engineers in the factory. We were called ‘Team Nico’, but now there’s Valtteri sitting there with them, and he has probably renamed it ‘Team Valtteri’.

Are you enjoying life as a retired F1 world champion?

I am definitely enjoying retirement, and I am feeling great in general. I feel very proud looking back, it’s an awesome emotion, which I’m taking with me now into my next steps. I would love to give something back now, so that’s my main focus at the moment; to find some projects I’m really passionate about. At the moment, the first thing would be with children that are a bit older who really can appreciate, for example, Formula One and things like that.

Would you like your children to become Formula One drivers?

It’s been an amazing ride, and I’m unbelievably grateful for the career that I’ve had in F1. The most important thing for my children is to really let them find their own way and not to hold them back. So, if one of my children or for now, my daughter, wants to go into racing one day, then I won’t stand in her way.

Most observers believe that Hamilton and Mercedes will be the ones to beat New regulations This year, new car regulations have been introduced to make the cars look aesthetically pleasing. The most notable difference is the wider Pirelli tyres that will make cornering speeds significantly faster, and in theory, more spectacular to watch. It is said that they will also be much more physically demanding to drive, with drivers having to deal with higher forces. Most observers believe that, despite the new regulations, Hamilton and Mercedes will be the ones to beat. It will be fascinating to see how the highly rated Bottas will compare, and if he can push one of F1’s very best in the same machinery.

F1 trendsetters Bahrain is all set to host the round three of the 2017 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix with much pomp and grandeur.

However, one name missing from the grid will be 2016 champion, Mercedes racer Nico Rosberg. This dramatic change at Mercedes – where Rosberg’s place alongside three-time champion Lewis Hamilton has been taken by Finn Valtteri Bottas – is not the only thing different in Grand Prix racing this year.

Mercedes has dominated Formula 1 in the past three seasons since the new hybrid power unit rules were enforced, with Hamilton taking the crown in 2014 and 2015. Rosberg clinched his first and the only world title at the final round of 2016 at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, despite his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton, winning all four of the final races in a nail-biting finish. Most people, when they think of the Maldives, imagine scenes that dominate the postcards and brochures. The telling circles of brilliant blue atolls below let you know that you are soon to land in paradise. What's good about the Maldives is that you can tackle it without an agenda. You can snorkel directly from your over-water villa, tootle along coral sands or wander aimlessly through tropical jungle vegetation and feel rewarded by simply getting lost. The sense of nostalgia it conjures – the sense of being a kid on holiday – takes over.

First Day Fish with locals Fishing is an integral part of the local culture.

A trip to the Maldives wouldn’t be complete without catching and cooking your own fish.

Fishing here is not just a mere recreational activity for tourists. For many locals, fishing is the lifeblood and an important part of their existence.

Tip: Fishing in the Maldives is categorised into three types: casual day fishing, big game fishing and night fishing.

Surf the waves The biggest waves hit Maldivian shores from June through August and the atoll of Malé is a perennial favourite with surfers. The best thing about a boat trip is the feeling of discovery, surfing on perfect waves with no crowd in the water. You can only have this experience in central and south atolls. Malé atolls can be quite crowded, especially between May and August.

Tip: Only a few surfing spots are easily accessible from resorts.

Shop and eat Head to Majeedhee Magu if you’re curious about the main commercial district of Malé or if you need to stock up on gear or souvenirs.

For a sumptuous Maldivian meal, head to Symphony Lagoon, which is operated by the oldest restaurant brand in the capital. Their main dishes include vegetable curry, grilled cuttlefish and Lebanese chicken.

Tip: Shops are generally open from 9 am until 11 pm, except between 6-8 pm.

Currently, the largest deep diving tourist submarine in existence, it carries 50 passengers to a depth of 150 metres below the surface of the sea, providing a window to the marine world. The submarine is fully air-conditioned, has a normal atmospheric pressure, superb safety features and is operated by a fully trained and certified team of French and local pilots.

Tip: It’s recommended for kids (above the age of three).

Banana Reef is a photographer's delight. The name comes from its elliptical shape, which extends 300 metres from north to south. The reef teems with marine life, ranging from the common napoleon wrasse and moray eels to the rare bannerfish. Featuring several caves, overhangs and dramatic cliffs, it's a great place for photo-ops.

It claims itself to be 'the greatest show on earth'.

It was also a beloved part of childhood to many kids in the United States and all across the world.

But now, after over 146 years of its existence, the curtain is coming down on the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The owners of the iconic American spectacle have announced that it will close the establishment in May; fans are calling it the end of a glorious era.

With its exotic animals, flashy costumes and death-defying acrobats, this has been a staple of entertainment in the US since the mid-1800s.

But declining attendance combined with high

operating costs, changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups have contributed to its demise. Before taking the final bow, the circus will perform 30 shows across the US till May. Phineas Taylor Barnum, an American politician, showman and businessman who founded the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1871, made a travelling spectacle of animals and human oddities popular, while the five Ringling brothers – who ran one of the largest travelling amusement enterprises of that time – performed juggling acts and skits from their home base in Wisconsin, the US.

The circus was routine, wholesome family fun.

But with time, kids became less enthralled Eventually, they merged and the modern circus was born. The sprawling troupes travelled around America by train, w o w i n g audiences with the sheer scale of entertainment and exotic animals. The Ringling circus was bought over by the Feld family in 1967. The show was just under three hours then. Today, the show is two hours and seven minutes, with the longest segment — a tiger act — clocking in at 12 minutes. The circus was routine, wholesome family entertainment. But with time, kids became

less enthralled. The circus didn't have savvy product merchandising tie-ins either to shore up its image. Meanwhile, another harsh reality was looming large – animals – the one thing that drew millions to the show. Eventually, in May 2016, after a long and costly legal battle, the company removed the elephants from the shows and sent the animals to live on a conservation farm in central Florida. The animals had been the symbol of the circus since Barnum brought an Asian elephant named Jumbo to America in 1882.

Attendance had been on a decline for several years, but when the elephants left, there was a ‘dramatic drop’ in ticket sales.

Now, that the circus is winding up, the Feld family members reportedly say their existing animals – lions, tigers, camels, donkeys, alpacas, kangaroos and llamas – will go to suitable homes. The company will continue operating the Center for Elephant Conservation, as per reports.

Tell us a little about you and iHeart Film...

The company was founded by myself and Helen Mckee.

We both grew up in Bahrain and so the island is our home.

Having worked within the media industry for the last 10 years, in both the UK and the GCC, we found it extremely frustrating when dealing with outside production houses.

We felt that because we are from a small island in the Arabian Gulf, people would assume that the quality of our work was not up to the mark. So iHeart Film was somewhat created to challenge that perception and produce innovative films that document this part of the world to an international standard.

I believe our style of storytelling is unique within the boundaries of corporate documentaries through our protagonist, his journey as he explored the culture and heritage of old Muharraq - re-emphasising the journal’s brand and image as a travel companion.

Describe yourself in five words?

Three things about Bahrain that you love the most?

Passionate, conscious, innovative, creative, inspired.

Its people. Its culture. And the abundance of local talent.

You are known to introduce a new style of filming. State three characteristics of your style of filming that makes you different from others?

Five things you can’t do without?

We definitely believe our style of storytelling is unique within the boundaries of corporate documentaries. We try to extract the human element from our corporate documentaries and produce an inspiring and personalised film that tells the story behind the product. For instance, we recently produced a film for a journal. Although the subject matter was a notebook, our treatment towards the product film purposely drew upon a human theme. We showed this

‫أنت تُع َرفين بابتكار أسلوب جديد في تصوير‬ ‫األفالم‪ .‬فهل لك أن تذكري ثالثة خصائص‬ ‫تميزك عن غيرك من المخرجين؟‬

‫نحن على قناعة تامة بأن أسلوبنا في السرد القصصي فريد من نوعه مقارنة‬ ‫ببقية أساليب األفالم الوثائقية‪ .‬فقد حرصنا على إبراز الجانب اإلنساني‬ ‫من األفالم واألعمال الوثائقية التي ننجزها كما أننا نحرص على أن تكون‬ ‫األعمال التي ننجزها ملهمة وذات طابع شخصي تعكس خبايا العمل المنتج‬ ‫نفسه‪ .‬فعلى سبيل المثال‪ ،‬أنتجنا مؤخرا فيلما وثائقيا لحساب إحدى الجرائد‪.‬‬ ‫فرغم أن موضوع هذا العمل يتعلق بجهاز نوت بوك فقد آثرنا التركيز على‬ ‫المضمون اإلنساني قبل كل شيء‪ .‬لقد عبرنا عن هذا األسلوب من خالل‬

Place both hands behind the head and arch your back tilting your chin up towards the ceiling. Hold for 10 seconds then relax. Repeat five times.

Start with keeping your head straight and looking forward. Gently tilt it to the left, then roll it back facing the ceiling and finish the roll by bringing it to the starting position.

Start in a rested position with arms to your sides. Roll your shoulders forward and bring them up towards your ears and continue to roll them towards your back and return to starting position.

Rotate the ankle first in clockwise and then in anti-clockwise motion. You can place the ball of your foot on the floor for support. Repeat with other foot.

Perform a suitcase deadlift without using dumb bells by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, bending at the knees with your torso perpendicular to the ground. Repeat 5 times.

Lift one foot off the ground at a 90 degree angle. Point the toe of the lifted foot up towards the ceiling and move your ankle in a clockwise direction.

Repeat on the other foot.

Emily Jean Stone "Emma" Stone is an American actress born on November 6, 1988 in Arizona. She hails from a German, English, Scottish, and Irish ancestry and has a younger brother, Spencer.

Stone was drawn to acting from the age of four and made her acting debut when she was 11, in a stage production ‘’The Wind in the Willows’’. Her acting career boomed in 2009 with movies ‘’Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’’, ‘’Zombieland’’, ‘’Friends with Benefits’’, “Crazy, Stupid, Love”, ‘’The Help’’, ‘’Easy A’’ to ‘’Amazing Spider Man and Spider Man -3’’ in 2013 and ‘’Birdman’’ in 2014.

Stone received several nominations for “Birdman” such as the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, BAFTA Rising Star Award, BAFTA Best Supporting Actress and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.

by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge, Zoo is the latest hit American TV show from CBS. Zoo proposes what may happen when animals have had enough of mankind destroying the planet and take the fate of the world into their own “hands”. With a stellar cast including James Wolk as Jackson Oz, a renegade American zoologist overseeing safaris in Africa, Kristen Connolly as LA journalist Jamie Campbell and Nonso Anozie as Abraham Kenyatta, a quickthinking safari guide. Starting with a series of lion attacks, James begins to notice animals exhibiting strange behaviour as attacks against humans start occurring all over the world.

The ferocious assaults accelerate and appear to be cunning and coordinated. Zoo is a show not to be missed. High action and fast paced with tense and suspenseful drama for a nail biting ride across the animal kingdom.

British singer-songwriter Jessica Hannah Glynne “Jess Glynne” (born October 20, 1989) is one of the fastest rising stars of recent years, smashing records for the most number one singles by a British solo female artist ever! It’s no surprise that her debut album, ‘I Cry When I Laugh’, became the fastest selling debut record of 2015, selling 10 million records worldwide.
