with all our heart

Dear Customer, As you will see in the fold out cover of this magazine, our new tagline is “With All Our Heart”. We picked this tagline because it captures our spirit—whatever we do, we do it with all our heart. Our commitment to customers is also with all our heart. Last week, we received this email from a customer. Not our customer on this occasion, but a customer nevertheless. Here is the letter: “Dear SpiceJet Customer Service

team, I was travelling from Delhi to Mumbai on an early morning flight (on another airline) with my parents. While checking in, I asked (the other airline’s) staff for assistance for my mother as she cannot walk or stand for long. The lady on the counter said yes sir will do the needful. When I approached the boarding gate for help, I was told that I need to wait. And despite waiting for 20 minutes no one came to me. On the nearby gate a gentleman was observing my tiff, he came to me and asked, “Sir can I help you?” I was so angry that I did not realise who he was and where he was from. I narrated my problem to him, he told me to wait a few minutes. Within 5 minutes he returned to me and said Sir I have arranged everything for you. He arranged assistance for my mother and helped us in getting boarded on priority with optimum care as I had expected. While I was talking to him, I saw his ID card and it was mentioned SpiceJet staff. I asked him you are from SpiceJet, and then also you are helping me? He, very politely, said to me that “Sir for us it is customer first.” I was so touched by the hospitality offered by him to me. I asked him that I want to give feedback on your service and he, with a smile again said Sir, fly with SpiceJet next time.”

Ankur, well done! You capture what all 5,600 of us in the SpiceJet family aspire and stand for. Customer service straight from the heart, regardless of whose customer it is! In other news, we are thrilled to partner again with the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) for this year’s IPL cricket tournament. SRH and SpiceJet have some genes in common, among them are passion, commitment, warmth, and a can-do attitude, as well as the ability and willingness to challenge the status quo, to innovate and to surprise. Our crew had a fantastic time doing the photo shoot with the SRH team for this magazine cover, and we wish Shikhar Dhawan and the team the very best in this year’s IPL. Last but not the least, this month marks the start of a new partnership between SpiceJet and TajSATS-Café Coffee Day, India’s premier inflight catering providers. TajSATS-CCD will handle all of SpiceJet’s catering systemwide, and you will soon be enjoying even more delicious ‘Hot Meals served with Warm Smiles’, along with a wide range of beverages and snacks, served with even more style and grace by our wonderful and caring cabin crew, the best in the Indian skies today.

In the net

For Amit Kumar, carving a niche at his work is the major driving force.

Name: Amit Kumar Designation: Project Leader, Information Technology Current Role: Taking care of Commercial Systems for SpiceJet

I have been a part of the SpiceJet family since September 2012 and it has been an amazing ride. What makes it exciting is the dynamic nature of our business and the opportunity to enhance my skills to meet the challenges.

Your responsibilities at present? I am responsible for managing IT related aspects of all Commercial projects. I am also managing development of applications that automate internal processes and operations.

Which is your favourite SpiceJet destination? My favourite SpiceJet destination is Dubai as it makes for a great short break for shopping, partying, sunbathing, fine dining and sporting events.

What is it that excites you about your role in the aviation industry? I am a travel connoisseur and hence my passion blends perfectly with the aviation Industry. The industry is evolving and with new business models, it is interesting to use technology to implement the models. The challenging work and the intellectual freedom to execute the task at hand, together make work life exciting and fulfilling.

How do you manage your life along with work? I strongly believe that one should maintain a balance between his professional and personal life. I always try to wrap up my work within the stipulated time frame and ensure that I spend some quality time with my family and friends. I appreciate my family as they always support me in case I need to work on projects at odd hours.

What about the challenges? Managing IT development for an airline was a new experience for me. Managing internal stakeholder expectations while servicing external customers through various channels is the most fundamental challenge I face. Pressure is huge, but working on multiple IT projects for various customers, in parallel and managing small SWOT teams, helped me immensely.

Family time

I belong to a middle class family, there are seven members in my family—my wife, my parents, two younger brothers and a sister-inlaw. Mine is a very religious family and we value our culture. I strongly believe that my family May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

what’s new SpiceJet powers up IPL SUNRISERS HYDERABAD AS ITS principal sponsor SpiceJet continues to extend its full support by being the principal sponsor of SunRisers Hyderabad, an Indian Premier League franchisee, owned by the Sun TV Network, a part of Sun Group. The airline is also the official airline partner for the team. Talking about its association with the cricket franchisee, Sanjiv Kapoor, Chief Operating Officer at SpiceJet commented, “We are proud to extend our association with SunRisers Hyderabad as the principal sponsor of the team for the second consecutive year.” During the seventh season of IPL, SpiceJet will offer free passes

for the SunRisers’ home games in India, and merchandise to its fans as prizes for various contests. 179

Your holiday, your way

SpiceJet has now introduced a special service called My Spicetrip—Your Holiday Your Way, which enables you to book not only hotels and holidays, but also experiences you would like to try at the destination you are travelling to. It offers bespoke experiences to all SpiceJet destinations. This season to accommodate the demands of cricket lovers, this offer helps you to book T20 cricket match tickets as well as airport transfers, sightseeing tours, visa, extra meals and travel with your favourite IPL team. My Spicetrip is powered by Tripfactory. For more information on the services offered, log on to http://www.myspicetrip.com/

SpiceJet now offers simpler fares

In an attempt to simplify ticket pricing, SpiceJet has merged the basic fare and fuel component surcharge to have one consolidated base fare. With this move, the airline has not only eradicated the concept of a separate fuel surcharge, but has also made pricing and fare displays simpler. To make the ticket booking process easier for its passengers, a statement released by SpiceJet said, “Ticket pricing and fare displays have been made simpler and more transparent by removal of the fuel surcharge add-on from all of its pricing, and consolidating it as part of the base fare. Going forward, the fare displayed will be what you see is what you pay.”

Expert from the Revenue Management team shares all that makes the department a rather important one at SpiceJet.

hen you travel by an airline, hardly its functionalities catch your attention. Personnel from various departments work in sync and make sure your journey is a comfortable one. One such department is Revenue Management, which happens to be an integral part of an airline business. Revenue Management is an imperative part of the airline's Commercial team, however, it is a common belief that it is sheltered under the Finance umbrella.

In layman’s terms, we, the Revenue Management people are 'the money-in guys'. Those who got a chance to read the April edition of Spiceroute, are aware of our colleagues in the Network Planning team and their role Once they, the Network Planning team, are done with their network analysis that involves things like—where to fly, when to fly, frequency of the flights etc— the ball comes to the court of the Revenue Management team.

Research at large

Once the flights are loaded for sale in the system, the Revenue Management team does the inventory planning and also the pricing. Various factors are considered during allocating

inventory, such as historic performance of the flights, seasonality, day of week, time of departure, apart from other factors if you are a price sensitive traveller and are not time sensitive the best time to travel for you, your family and friends is in the lean season.

Various factors are considered during allocating inventory To drill it down further, you are more likely to get a cheaper ticket

on a flight in the mid-week on a mid-day departure or even on an early morning, like a 5 AM departure or a red eye 11 PM departure.

Marketing initiatives

You may be intrigued as to why and how any airline would sell its services below its cost? This is a global low-cost airline practice. We usually do not have huge marketing budget and have to get a big impact on the minimum spend. For example, our recent `1 base fare promo created a stir in the market and stimulated sales that came

mostly from the first time travellers, converting even those passengers to fly who would normally take the bus or train for their joruney. Are we then diluting our own revenues by adopting a strategy like this? The answer is No, we are not fully booked on all flights all year round. We do have a lot of historic data and can forecast low demand flights scientifically and park more of these really low fares on flights that are less likely to go full. Revenue Management also proactively drives promotions. We look at flights way in advance and

passenger first If you are a time sensitive traveller and have to take a flight as per your business needs and meeting schedules, it is most likely that you are competing with people of a similar profile to get a seat on a prime 8 am departure flight on a Monday.

Same goes for the same day return options—say on a peak 6 pm flight, you have to pay a premium. Like all low-cost airline pricing practiceS globally, pricing at spicejet too is purely based on demand and supply. If the demand exceeds supply (our own and competitor airlines) then the price of a ticket is likely to go up and vice versa. You are likely to get a great deal, even way lower than our costs at times on weak flights.

push the low demand flights with attractive deals. Best time to buy an airline ticket for your personal travel and to travel with friends and family is when we have these attractive promotions. Your travel cost can be cut down close to 50 per cent. As the airline ticket component is generally the highest of your total travel cost, more savings here mean you get to stay in a better hotel or simply have more for shopping and spare cash for other activities that may fancy you.

We are impacted by the uncontrollables like hike in fuel prices and natural disasters Business strategy

Like all businesses, sometimes things don’t go as per the planning for us as an airline. We are impacted by almost all uncontrollable factors by us, like hike in fuel prices, natural disasters, May 2014 | www.spiceroutemag.com

weather, economic slowdown etc. People travel lesser than they usually do during such times, but as an airline we can’t have planes sitting on ground or flying only with half occupancy or lesser. Therefore, we periodically come up with offers to stimulate demand. So, next time you see a deal on a flight when you have already bought a ticket at regular price you know the reason why and we expect your understanding. This is no different to any retail deals on commodities at any super or a hyper market. Today, you may buy a detergent at `200 a pack and two days later you may get two packs for the same price. Our service delivery is the best DEAL at the time of purchase. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of your flight. Do send a cheer to a bunch of enthusiastic and specialist individuals, who are constantly working very hard to get you the best value for your money. Wishing you more and happy travels, always.

music on board

SpiceJet flights play soft rock music for boarding & take-off, and again for landing & disembarkation. Here's our track list... Eagles Witchy Woman

184

This was the first song that Don Henley wrote for Eagles with guitarist Bernie Leadon. "She drove herself to madness with the silver spoon" in the song is a reference to Zelda Fitzgerald's special slotted silver spoon used to dissolve sugar cubes with Absinthe. Foreigner I Have Waited So Long “I have waited oh so long, please don't tell me baby I was wrong”. Composed by Mick Jones, a simple lilting ballad from “Hot Blooded” that every teenager in the 1980s could identify with, became a big hit. Peter Malick Group with Norah Jones Heart of Mine “Don’t let her know that you love her, don’t be a fool.” A Bob Dylan composition from his album Shot of Love, and re-recorded by The Peter Malick Group in 2000 featuring Norah Jones. SpiceJet COO Sanjiv Kapoor notes, “I first heard this track playing on the radio in my W Hotel room overlooking San Francisco Bay one evening in 2005, and was immediately drawn to it and hooked… Norah Jones at her raw finest, a must for any fan!”.

Dr Hook When You’re In Love With a Beautiful Woman “When you're in love with a beautiful woman, you watch your friends”… A truer phrase seldom uttered! Riding the disco wave in 1979 it became an international hit. Fleetwood Mac Over My Head This gentle soft rock song was released as the lead single from the 1975 album Fleetwood Mac. It was the band's first song ever to achieve 'hit' status in the US. Steely Dan Do It Again The first single by this American jazz/rock band, the song reached No. 6 on the Billboard chart. The band was known for nicely blending the elements of jazz, rock, funk, and pop. Eagles One of These Nights This title track written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey transformed them into international superstars. According to Frey, the song is about putting things off. "We've all said, 'One of these nights I'm gonna do something - get that girl... find that house.' Bee gees For Whom The Bell Tolls This lesser-known but still catchy Bee Gees track is from their 1993 album, “Size Isn’t

Everything”. With its plaintive lost love lyrics, this track is a pleasant reminder of the amazing vocal harmonizing power of the Brothers Gibb. Ray Charles and Norah Jones Here we Go Again Ray Charles' 1967 hit was re-recorded as a duet in 2004 with Norah Jones as part of Charles' Grammy Award for Album of the Year winning Genius Loves Company. It proved to be the most popular and critically acclaimed song on the album. Eagles I Can’t Tell You Why This song from “The Long Run” was the first to feature Timothy B. Schmit on lead vocals. Live versions of the song were released in the 1980 album Eagles Live and 1994's Hell Freezes Over. Bruce Springsteen My Hometown This 1984 song begins with a nostalgic invocation of the singer’s childhood, but then goes on to describe the racial violence & economic depression. Franki Valli My Eyes Adored You This popular song written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan was originally recorded by Franki Valli and The Four Seasons in early 1974, but was released only with Fanki Valli’s name on it.

With teenage angst lyrics like “My eyes adored you, Though I never laid a hand on you, My eyes adored you...”, this was Valli's first No. 1 hit as a solo artist. Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry Slave To Love One of Roxy Music lead singer Bryan Ferry's most popular hits, this seductive 1985 song has been used in various cinematic works, most popularly in the erotic drama 9½ Weeks (1986). Percy Sledge When A Man Loves a Woman Written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, this plaintive song was recorded by Percy Sledge in 1966. With lyrics like “If she is bad, he can't see it, she can do no wrong,” it talks to the throes of blind infatuation. Chris Isaak Wicked Game This 1989 number became a raging hit when it featured in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart (1990). Its popular b/w video featuring top model Helena Christensen frolicking on the beach with Isaak was also ranked #4 on VH1's 50 Sexiest Video Moments. Eric Clapton Wonderful Tonight Clapton wrote

"Wonderful Tonight" for his wife Patty Boyd while waiting for her to get ready to attend Paul and Linda McCartney's annual Buddy Holly party. Boyd would later say: 'Wonderful Tonight' was the most poignant reminder of all that was good in our relationship." Gary Wright Dream Weaver This 1976 track was inspired by Autobiography of a Yogi, which was given to Wright by George Harrison. Paramhansa Yogananda's poem "God! God! God!" refers to "the idea of the mind weaving dreams." The Cars Drive Written by Ric Ocasek and sung by Benjamin Orr, this was their greatest international hit. It was used at the 1985 Live Aid concert as the background music to a montage. Gregory Abbott Shake you Down This 1986 song by became a big hit and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It was a hit across the Atlantic Ocean, as well, peaking at number six in the UK Singles Chart. Interestingly, Abbott has taught English at the University of California, Berkeley.
