Greece-based award-winning illustrator, painter, and teacher As an artist, I'm inspired by the layers of Greek culture as they unfold through time.

The sublime and grounding effect I feel while wandering around the holy rock of the Acropolis, standing still in the presence of the Parthenon, is always profound. But as you walk down from the hill of Acropolis, you will find yourself in the neighbourhood of Psirri, where industrial spaces have been turned into trendy galleries, studios, restaurants, and cool bars. It’s this mix that keeps tugging at me every time I’m here.

Tips:

Do visit the B&M Theocharakis Foundation for fascinating exhibits, including one featuring Impressionist painter Michalis Economou (1888–1933), which made a lasting impression on me.

Another must-see is the Former Public Tobacco Factory for contemporary art and cultural shows.

There is an unending range of dishes our cuisine offers, including distinct summer and winter recipes. In Athens, summer meals are dominated by ladera, a dish of vegetables poached in fresh tomato and extra-virgin olive oil. In winter, lahanodolmades, or cabbage rolls filled with minced meat, rice, and dill, and topped with avgolemono, a rich egg–lemon sauce, are among the city's old-time classics. And year-round, the spotlight is on the cheese and spinach pie.

Tips:

My favourite spots for the best and most authentic local produce are Athens Central Market and the weekly farmers’ markets in each neighbourhood (laiki). To find the best Greek wine and liquor, visit Kylix (named after an ancient Greek drinking vessel) and Cellier.

Athens is dotted with high-end fine-dining restaurants. I would recommend Soil and Spondi, both recognised by the Michelin Guide, alongside Pharaoh, Ateno Cook & Deli, and Aleria. But do reserve your table at least a week in advance, especially at Soil and Spondi, where many diners book several weeks ahead.

For a casual experience, head to popular eating spots such as To Steki Tou Ilia for the best lamb chops in the city; Epirus Tavern for old-school traditional recipes; TA Giouvetsakia for sensational ingredients; or Lefteris O Politis for a taste of the much-loved street treat, the souvlaki (a pita wrap with skewered and grilled meat).

She calls herself a cross between a foodie, a wellness junkie, and, on some days, a “lazy beach potato”. “You can take me to any beach destination every couple of months, and I'll not get bored. All my holidays can be by the sea,” says Rakul Preet Singh, the actor, who, with her understated grace, has given Bollywood some of its most unexpected hits in recent years. Still revelling in the success of her latest film, De De Pyaar De 2, Singh says she feels a deep sense of calm by the sea. “The sea is a metaphor for life. It hides within it much more than what the eye can see. While its surface beauty is mesmerising, when I go diving, the world beneath is mysteriously captivating,” says Singh.

Ko Samui in Thailand is one of her favourites, for its brilliant sea, surf, wellness therapies, and for hosting some of the most memorable moments of her life. “Jackky (husband and Indian film actor and producer Jackky Bhagnani) proposed to me in Samui. He had planned the proposal by the beach, with a violinist playing softly. There was a special song too, ‘Sunoh, will you marry me?' It couldn’t have been more magical,” the actor gushes.

A woman decorating her thinnai (traditional house) doorstep with rice flour kolam patterns looked up and folded her hands in a prayer, as temple bells echoed. Melodious strains of Carnatic music filled the dawn air, signalling a young singer's dedicated practice. This small village of Kallidaikurichi, Tamil Nadu, is guarded by the Western Ghats that stand tall, unperturbed by their UNESCO Natural Heritage Site title. While tourists are drawn by this global recognition, my visit is driven by a need to reconnect with my ancestry and the legacy of a way of life that is unique to this part of India.

Power of Legacy But I am not alone in my search. World over, travel is being fuelled by legacies and heritage, and the fear of losing both to time

and development. Beyond “hidden gems” and checklist sightseeing, a new emotional logic is taking over to indulge in journeys built around where we come from. Travel forecasters are tracking a shift toward purpose-led and heritage-anchored trips in 2026, to smaller towns, cultural continuity, and experiences that feel personal rather than performative.

Researchers studying “genealogical” and “legacy” travel describe this pull as deeply experiential, triggered by the thought to “see it before it fades”.

The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur reflects a legacy of scientific inquiry, where astronomy and architecture came together to understand the cosmos. Meanwhile, the serene Sanchi Stupa in Madhya Pradesh embodies an enduring spiritual tradition rooted in peace and mindfulness.

GlobalViewpoint Automotive design studios are magical places. Often found hidden behind two or three levels of locked doors, accessible only to a chosen few with the right credentials, they’re expansive, well-lit and full of wonder.

Mood boards filled with fashion photos, pictures of landscapes and architectural iconography inspire the teams. Models of cars sculpted from clay - in various shapes and sizes - fixate the designers. Then you smell the sulphur.

The Old Ways Traditional modelling clays contain sulphur, a reliable binding agent for the waxes and oils used during the sculpting process, and exude a pungent smell of rotting eggs. For decades, designers dealt with the smell until their computers started failing.

“Over 15 years ago, all computer circuit boards switched to a silver compound from lead solder,” said Mark Malewitz, president at Clay Warehouse Inc., Michigan, USA, an automobile modelling company. “They found out pretty quickly, as any modeller who wore silver jewellery already knew, that sulphur corrodes silver," he added.

Over the years, some professional-grade industrial and artistic clay manufacturers such as Chavant and Staedtler have created different formulations without sulphur to try to eliminate the concomitant odour, but new technology, such as augmented and virtual reality, is significantly reshaping the auto development process. Virtual reality headsets, when combined with digital modelling software, allow designers and engineers to collaborate more quickly and easily. Besides saving money, the technology also reduces the need to sculpt full-size models of cars with clay.

“Before we had virtual reality, we would build about 80 to 100 vehicles for a major project like a new architecture,” said Karsten Garbe, plant director at General Motors' Artisan Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan.

Today, that number is closer to 30 or 40 vehicles, and virtual reality is used in the development of every new car.

Gaming Headsets Like many other auto manufacturers, General Motors (GM) first started experimenting with the computer-gaming-focussed HTC Vive headsets in the late 2010s. Today, manufacturers use everything from consumer-grade headsets, like Meta’s $499 Quest 3, to more professional units like the Varjo XR-4, which can cost more than $10,000.

Garbe’s team is responsible for piecing GM’s prototype cars together for brands such as Chevrolet and GMC, making sure not only that everything fits but that it can be assembled and serviced in a safe, repeatable way. It’s a little like assembling the world’s most complicated model kit, long before the instructions get written.

Before GM invested in virtual reality, engineers had to wait for prototype components to be manufactured and delivered. Now, they can work from early digital 3D models, checking fit and feasibility months before the first part is cast. Garbe said that this identifies problems early, flagging components that can’t physically be manoeuvred into place or that don’t fit properly, dramatically reducing the number of prototype vehicles needed. This process was used to develop

Jim Conner, director of 3D process delivery at Ford Design, cited the important task of finding the right wheels. He said designers might go through as many as 35 potential wheel designs for a major model like the Mustang. In the old days, all 35 would have to be crafted by hand from plastic, foam and paint for evaluation.

Using augmented and virtual reality, designers can narrow it down much more quickly, changing colours, finishes and shapes instantly. “We’re really getting down to five or six critical ones that really resonated.

And then we’ll actually make very nice prototypes of those,” Conner said.

USING AUGMENTED AND VIRTUAL REALITY, DESIGNERS CAN NARROW DESIGNING DOWN MUCH MORE QUICKLY, CHANGING COLOURS, FINISHES, AND SHAPES INSTANTLY.

3D Printing Other technologies, like 3D printing, are changing the game too, speeding up prototyping and the creation of parts out of plastic, resin, or even metal that previously would be meticulously hand-sculpted. “We used to hand model, in clay, seats, including stitches,” Conner said. “You can imagine the technique and the expertise it takes to model a stitch on a seat in clay," he added.

Larger digital designs can also be brought into reality via milling machines that hone giant slabs of clay into a rough shape. The artisan modellers then come in to finesse the final shapes and details.

“The ability to rapidly mill full-size physical models provides significant advantages in the product development process, primarily by enabling a more dynamic approach to design iteration and validation,” said John Krsteski, senior chief designer for Hyundai's premium vehicle division, Genesis, in North America.

“We still do hand modelling, but we’ve taken our clay modellers and put a lot of technology

When it comes to visual design, the outright style and appearance of the car, there are considerable advantages, too.

in their hands now, and basically given them different tools,” Ford’s Conner said. “We’re trying not to say that people are clay modellers. They’re actually a model maker, where clay is one thing they’re using.”

“A lot of the studios were saying, ‘let’s just go digital,’” Malewitz said. But the results, he continued, weren’t good, with plenty of “angular lines that don’t have the human touch.”

While the engineers can create near-photo-realistic renderings of objects in augmented and virtual reality, a key part of the process was missing: “The one thing you cannot replace with virtual reality is sunlight,” Malewitz said, echoing a common sentiment among designers that, while they may be investing in fewer models than before, nothing beats a real, full-size clay sculpture for final approvals.

“Virtual and augmented reality are really fantastic developmental tools, but I do believe there will always be a point where you’re going to see a physical thing,” Conner said. “I don’t think virtual reality will replace that.”
