The Himalayas can have a healing effect, almost meditative. They have healed my soul. I have found peace in unknown hamlets of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Just sitting on the banks of the Ganga in Rishikesh can soothe my inner turmoil. Wherever you travel in the Himalayas, the feeling of re-connecting with your self is omnipresent. In 2021, on New Year's eve, I was in Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh. We were surrounded by snow and a breeze was blowing as the dawn broke over the peaks, turning everything around into sparkling gold! Then, it started snowing. It was my first tryst with snowfall. Even today, when I close my eyes and think of that magical moment, my mind calms down.

"The dust of over three decades of globetrotting has settled into the pores of our skin and yet it's never enough," they say about their journeys.

However, if we still have to choose, it would be Ladakh. The surreal landscapes inhabited by gentle, peace-loving people make this destination unique. Coupled with a sense of remoteness, Ladakh is sheer paradise. And the opportunity to track snow leopards is a cherry on the cake. One winter, we were lucky enough to spot the endangered animal perched high on a cliff. We captured his image, just in the nick of time, before he disappeared into thin air.

Dhows (traditional wooden boats) bobbing on the waters of the Persian Gulf juxtaposed with a spectacularly contemporary skyline studded with the Museum of Islamic Art... that's the vibrant city of Doha, where history blends into modernity! A burgeoning arts and culinary centre, Doha, the capital of Qatar, is a microcosm of the country itself. Peninsular Qatar is a smorgasbord of experiences and as the country gears up to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November, the atmosphere is charged with boundless energy and bustling with expectations!

DOHA DIARIES A trip to Qatar should start at Doha, which originated from Al-Bida, the old quarter of the city that traces its birth to the nomadic bedouin communities. Once a fishing and a pearling village, no one could have ever imagined its transformation into a flourishing futuristic country capital. A megalopolis in the making, Doha offers a glimpse of the future while holding its heritage close to its heart.

A stroll through the iconic Souq Waqif is like walking into a chapter of the Arabian Nights. It is one of the oldest markets in the city dating back to the time when Doha was just a village. With roads snaking past muddaubed buildings, you will come across shoppers bargaining for products ranging from aromatic ouds, attars and pearls to spices, traditional apparel and Aladdin-style lamps. Enjoy a meal in one of the open-air cafes while interacting with the warm local residents. Don't be surprised to hear neighs of horses nearby - that can be the mounted police patrolling the streets of the market!

To soak in the splendour of the West Bay skyline, the Qatar State Grand Mosque is the

place to be. The mosque's elegant arches and domes speak volumes about its classic Islamic heritage. For a closer look, enter the mosque during the non-prayer hours.

The Katara Cultural Village stands as a testament to how Qatar has become an international hub of culture and art. Explore the magnificent art gallery, where you may catch an exhibition or you can sit by the iconic amphitheatre, inspired by Greek architecture, for a stellar view of the sea.

Adding further charm to the village is the eye-catching Gold Mosque, which is draped in gold tiling.

To get the best shots of the city, head to the Corniche. Its waterfront promenade stretching around seven km has the perfect angles to frame Doha. The Corniche has been the throbbing heart of Doha, a favourite with locals and tourists alike.

Stroll through the walkway admiring the sun setting over the city or enjoy a cruise on a traditional wooden dhow on the calm waters of the Persian Gulf. The dhow pays a homage to Qatar's rich history when it was used by merchants to ferry goods. The moonlight dhow cruises are particularly popular with couples!

MUSEUM MUSINGS One of the best ways to explore the cultural and artistic roots of the country is to head to its numerous museums.

The most prominent one in Doha is the Museum of Islamic Art, which is a treasure trove of artworks, artefacts and manuscripts from the Islamic world dating back several centuries. The fascinating façade of the museum is the spotlight of Qatar's cultural vision. I have seen it countless times - a mural portraying two children on a bicycle. On the glossy pages of travel magazines and on television travel shows. Even postcards!

But standing face-to-face with this piece of art titled 'Children on Bicycle' by noted Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, I realise that while the children are painted (almost life-like), the cycle is real (barring a handle and a pedal, set against the sketch in a way that makes it inseparable from the entire canvas, almost like a 3D rendition – something that all the photographs I have ever come across failed to convincingly convey.

I am in George Town, the smorgasbord capital of Malaysia's island state of Pulau Pinang, popularly known as Penang. I am on a mission, a treasure hunt of sorts – to explore George Town's kaleidoscopic and vibrant street art.

Beyond Street Art Three of the world’s ancient cultures (Indian, Chinese & Malay), some amazing colonial architecture and some of the best Southeast Asian food — the beautiful concoction you will get is called George Town.

There are more than 1,700 historic buildings within its core zone, aligned on four main streets, namely Pengkalan Weld, Lebuh Pantai, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Lorong Love.

The first thing that strikes you about this UNESCO World Heritage Site city is how charmingly it has infused street art into its decade-old architecture. A largerthan-life mural of a cat peeking from an open double pane window, numerous witty iron sculptures narrating a different story or depicting a slice of Malay life and then some.

Meandering through trishaws, I take in the sights and sounds of the famous Armenian Street. I come across a commercial mural titled 'I Want Bao!' on the walls of the local Ming Xiang Tai bakery. I learn from the locals that the kids in the mural are the owner's own!

The murals of the city manage to beautifully capture the lifestyle of the early immigrants of George Town in the 20th century.

There are over 30 graffiti art and 50 steel-rod sculptures to explore in George Town. It is advised to visit the tourist centre in George Town, located at Lebuh Pantai, and collect an offline map.

Following the route map is the best way to explore street art in Penang.

Though street art in George Town is everywhere, spotting it, sometimes, can be fairly tricky. Here, every piece of art appears so real that you don’t realise that you’re looking at something painted unless you observe intently. A boy reaching for an overhead opening standing on a real chair or an elderly man on his rickshaw taking a break — paintings and real objects blend seamlessly.

Along with stunning murals, enhancing George Town's artistic aesthetics are the 50 odd wrought iron sculptures and caricatures, which are witty and depict the lifestyle of the early immigrants of George Town in the 20th century. Most of these iron art is accompanied with a description.

The locals are friendly and will translate them for you.

I keep an eye out for pieces of art in nooks and crannies as I make my way to the historic Chew Jetty, where I am told I would find some of the oldest murals. Smiling faces of an elderly lady and a child greet me from one of the buildings at the jetty. The mural is simply titled 'Ah mah and Ah Soon' (grandmother and grandchild). Another mural that catches my attention is titled 'Folklore by the Sea', which narrates the tale of the settlers from China who built their homes at the Penang waterfront in the 1880s.

To say that these are the highlights of George Town's street art heritage would be a massive understatement. One has to see it, in person, to truly come to terms with the grandeur and visual spectacle that pours over from every wall.

Communicative in true sense, the award-winning actor says, “Understanding acting, realising that I can be a part of a successful play and knowing that I can act, have changed the entire course of my life.” The actor is known for critically acclaimed performances in theatre and film. Having acted in more than 80 films, Hussain is known for his work in movies such as Ang Lee's Oscar winning Life of Pi, Gautam Ghosh's The Wayfarer and Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist among many others. Born in Goalpara, a small town around 140 km from Guwahati in Assam, the humble actor accredits the good wishes of the people from his home state for his success. Work apart, travelling rules his life.

Owing to his work schedule, he travels extensively. The thespian recalls travel memories of his pre-cinema days. Getting behind the steering wheel of a car and hitting the road is what he has been doing from the time before 'road trips' became a trend. And not always a car, Hussain has also travelled on a motorbike and even ridden a tempo traveller to soak in the shades of a nomadic life. “I am a traveller and not a tourist. I do not believe in falling for only the attractions of a destination. I want to be a part of a place, its lifestyle and culture. I have spent three and a half years of my life teaching in the Netherlands.

While I was there, I got into the fabric of the society and its culture,“ explains the artiste.

He was offered the role of a permanent faculty in the Netherlands, but by then, he had decided to return to his homeland.

“India is a magical country. Each state can be compared to a country in Europe. If one hasn’t travelled around India, especially her villages, one can never admire the real fabric of India. The beauty and wisdom of the country are unique,” the actor explains.

Those were my struggling days when I was penniless. I was either having meals at a friend’s place or at the Guwahati railway station – a lunch plate for just one rupee!

Fav sites Once in this lifetime, you must visit Majuli – the largest river island. I visit this place every year in January for the Majuli Music Festival. My friends, Kaushik Nath, Utpal Borpujari, and I had started this musical fiesta.
