The excitement of Diwali, one of India's most important festivals, which is celebrated across the country with much grandeur, starts way before it arrives. Houses are cleaned and decorated, traditional savouries dished up, firecrackers stocked and gifts arranged for. Shopping for clothes, oil lamps, lanterns, rangoli, ubtan etc. is part of the festivities. It's also a time when people bond with family, friends and loved ones.

Although the essence of Diwali remains common everywhere, India being a potpourri of varied cultures, celebrations differ with its every region. Tag along with us on a festive tour that unveils the unique customs, food and must visit spots of some prominent Gulf Air destinations.

New Delhi Unique customs: Diwali celebrations begin early in the Indian capital with onset of the Dusshera festival during which, Ramlila - a dramatic rendition of the story of the epic Ramayana - is staged at every nook and corner. Diwali is a lavish affair spread over five days - Dhanteras, Chhoti Diwali, Laxmi Pujan, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. Sweets, dry fruits and silver coins are most common gifts. Engaging shopping melas are a striking feature of the city.

Hyderabad Unique customs: In the city of Nizams, the festival starts at the crack of dawn. While some areas host local stage story telling called Hari Katha, some others put up a huge Narakasura (demon) dummy made with fireworks, which is later burst by a person dressed as lord Krishna.

There is a unique custom of decorating homes with paper figures.

Chennai Unique customs: Tamilians celebrate Diwali a day in advance on Naraka Chaturdasi and address the festival as 'Deepavali'. On Diwali morning people wake up early and apply a special oil made by mixing turmeric powder, pepper balls and dry curry leaves. This is followed by a hot water bath and simultaneous bursting of crackers for good luck.

Special treats: Laddu, badusha, jangree and Mysore pak. A Diwali special lunch consisting of laddu, kadamba, pineapple rasam, avial, paruppu vadai, paruppu payasam etc. is served at restaurants.

Must visit spots: T Nagar, Meenakshi temple

Unique customs: Diwali is a single day affair for the Malayalis. Betel leaves, betel nuts, plantain fruits, sandal paste and gingili oil are some unique things used for puja. The ritual of performing enchantments in front of the family deity, is followed by a breakfast of idli or dosa and murruku, a sweet dish. Processions of lord Vishnu and Narakasura are worth a watch.

Watches and writing instruments are favoured gifting options for men.

The Qatari capital gears up to become the first Middle Eastern city to host the Road World Championships 2016 Words By: Pascal Matthews

Over 1,000 cyclists hailing from 75 countries will fight it out against each other at the Road World Championships (RWC) 2016, taking place this month for the first time in Doha, Qatar. Organised by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Doha, the championship, which is slated to take place between October 9-16, will witness the presence of almost 30,000 cycling fans from across the world.

What is RWC? RWC is an annual event, which the UCI has been organising since 1921. The first edition took place in Denmark. By hosting the UCI RWC in Doha 2016, Qatar will become the first Middle Eastern country and the second Asian country to stage it after Japan in 1990.

The air is filled with excitement in the capital in anticipation of the big event. Recently, Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Thani, chairman, Local Organising Committee, and children from Doha came together at the Aspire Zone to celebrate the ‘One Month To Go’ countdown event.

What will be unique As per reports, the organising committee is going all out to make RWC an unforgettable experience for sport lovers. Passing through most famous locations of Doha, the broadcasting will be through very outstanding parkour with the surroundings of the pearl – Qatar, Qatar Foundation, Lusail and AspireZone. “The racers will pass by famous locations such as Education City, which features

famous international universities, the Aspire Zone with its iconic sport venues, and the sport complex of Lusail,” Sheikh Khalid was quoted as saying.

The Arabian hospitality, windy weather and surroundings will add a different flavour to the championship. Johan Lammerts, Dutch national coach said, “The first 150 kilometres through the desert with crosswinds from all different angles will be tough.

The countries with a strong sprinter will probably try to take control, but a lot of other countries like Italy, Belgium and Spain may prefer an open race.”

Emerging sports capital Qatar has a rich sporting heritage and it's further positioning itself as one of the world’s premiere sports destinations. Building on the interest generated when it hosted the Asian Games in 2006, the country has gone onto establish itself as a bona fide ‘Land of Sport’, highlighted by the fact that it is playing host to dozens of top-class events every year. In 2010, FIFA selected Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The UCI World Road Championships 2016 will be one of several international sports events hosted in Qatar this year. Earlier this year, Doha had hosted the World Nine-Ball Pool Championship and coming December it, yet again, will host the World Bowling Championships. Doha has also been selected as host of the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

While many countries in the Arab world boast about their fine jewellery designers making a big impact with their designs, both at home and overseas, Saudi Arabia was mostly untouched by this unique phenomenon.

But Saudi-born Paris-based haute couture jewellery designer HRH Nourah Al Faisal changed this by launching her brand Nuun in 2014. Ever since, her beautiful creations

Early beginnings Al Faisal’s fixation with jewellery started very early. In fact she has always loved the essence of design in all its forms. As a child, she enjoyed visiting the high jewellery shops located at London’s Bond Street and

The intuitive drive to do something worthy in life has been the sole guiding factor throughout her career. That’s why she proudly portrays herself as a self-taught jewellery designer.

After her graduation, she apprenticed in Georland, a famous Parisian high jewellery shop, learning the nuts and bolts of designing couture jewellery. “This was all I did and from then on went on to make commissioned pieces for over 15 years before finally setting up my Nuun empire,” she says.

She attaches a lot of importance to quality, beauty and sustainability. These are the major characteristics setting her designs apart from the rest. “I want to work with people, suppliers or workshops, who share the same values,” she says. Al Faisal looks up to the wonders of nature, architecture, or even music for inspiration. “It could be anything that catches my eyes and my imagination,” she adds.

‫البدايات األولى‬

‫بدأت األميرة نورة الفيصل تغرم بعالم المجوهرات منذ نعومة‬ ‫أظفارها‪ ،‬بل إنها كانت دائما شغوفة بكل ما يمت بصلة لتصاميم‬ ‫الموضة بمختلف أشكالها‪ .‬فعندما كانت في مرحلة الطفولة‬ ‫كانت تستمتع بزيارة محالت المجوهرات مع والدتها‪ ،‬سواء في‬ ‫شارع "بوند ستريت" في لندن أو في ساحة فندوم في باريس‪.‬‬ ‫تقول األميرة نورة الفيصل‪" :‬لقد كنت أنبهر خاصة بالمعادن‬ ‫الثمينة والحجارة الكريمة وأعجب كثيرا بتصاميمها الجميلة‬ ‫التي تزيد االنسان أناقة وتألقا كما أنها مرآة تعكس شخصية‬ ‫المرأة التي تتحلى بها‪ .‬لقد انبهرت بذلك كثيرا"‪.‬‬

‫فنانة عصامية‬

‫كانت األميرة نورة الفيصل طموحة منذ صغرها وقد تولدت‬

La La Land American 2016 romantic musical comedy-drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, JK Simmons, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Rosemarie DeWitt and Meagen Fay, the plot follows a musician and aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in LA.

Arrival American 2016 science fiction drama directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, it is based on the short story "Story of Your Life" by author Ted Chiang. The movie stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.

A United Kingdom Starring Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, this yetto-be-released biographical film from British director Amma Asante tells the true story of Seretse Khama,

Snowden 2016 political-thriller Snowden from Oliver Stone will be making its debut at festivals. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the titular whistleblower, this super-charged film follows Edward Snowden as well as delves into the personal back story of this extraordinary figure.

Queen of Katwe A 2016 biographical sports drama, Queen of Katwe tells the inspiring story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi (played by newcomer Madina Nalwanga), who became the first titled female chess player in Ugandan history at the 40th World Chess Olympiads.

A Monster Calls A 2016 fantasy drama directed by JA Bayona, it's based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Patrick Ness. The dulcet tones of Liam Neeson steal the show in this visually stunning fantasy about a young boy’s struggle to cope with his mother’s terminal illness.

It is said that your trip to Bahrain is incomplete if you have not tasted the Bahraini halwa.

The jelly-like sweet, made from sugar, corn starch, saffron and nuts, is locally known as halwa Showaiter, derived from the family name and its chain of stores, but regionally and internationally known as Bahraini halwa.

According to food aficionados, the Bahraini halwa is a direct descendant of the Omani version, introduced to the local cuisine more than 90 years ago following visits by Bahraini pearl divers and fishermen to Muscat.

The origin The name 'halwa Showaiter' comes from the Showaiter family, based in Muharraq, which has been in the sweets business for over 150 years. Halwa is one of their flagship products and undoubtedly the best in Bahrain.

The making Making the halwa is a labour of love and patience. Special large containers are used for the purpose. After putting the raw material in the container, a long wooden spatula is used to stir the ingredients continuously - the key to a perfect product. Additional garnishing of dry fruit is added and as the makers keep a close watch to attain the perfect stickiness.

Once the desired consistency is reached, the contents are scooped on to another pan swiftly. This is done to avoid over cooking and toughening of the halwa.

The halwa comes in several colours and with different bases of saffron or cardamom.

The types of nuts used also add their own flavour. By and large it is sold in circular, white plastic boxes.

How did the unique idea of starting a website for swim and resort wear come about?

We wanted to bring together beautiful swim and resort wear from around the world to one central online place, 365 days a year. We saw this was a

missing niche in the market and have created a ‘one-stop-shop’ for contemporary warm weather clothing. Furthermore, we want the clothes to be accessible to all and have implemented worldwide free shipping and returns to our customers around the world, while everything is housed in Bahrain.

Our client base is mixed, as we have customers in over 35 countries What things do you look for when you decide to endorse a certain brand of swimwear?

We look for quality and style, our customers expect us to bring them the latest designs and good quality fabrics. The past few seasons we have seen the resurgence of the one piece alongside some interesting new fabrics, such as scuba material, which is incredibly flattering.

Do you have a signature line?

No, not yet. We are a multi brand boutique and source designers from around the world. The collection changes every season and we look forward to introducing new brands each year.

For many it is the first time they are available in the region or being sold online.

Was GCC’s conservative dressing style, especially for women, a topic of concern before taking the business plunge?

It is something we did take into consideration, however many women dress as they wish in private. Furthermore our client base is mixed, as we have customers in over 35 countries worldwide.

How do you keep up with the latest trends in swim and resort wear?

Leila is our buyer and she visits trade shows around the world, reviews brands online and stays up to date with new designers in the market. We enjoy being ahead of the curve and knowing what the Maison du Maillot woman likes. So it’s important to stay on top of all the latest fashion trends.

Do you put special efforts as an entrepreneur to stand out in the competition?

We strongly believe in our key brand values, one of which is a high level of customer service. We put a lot of effort into ensuring that from the moment you are browsing the website

to when your package arrives at your door, everything has been consistent and to a high level.

We have a live chat stylist who can help with any questions to ensure that our customers are always happy.

Your thoughts about the burkini invented by Australian designer Aheda Zanetti.

Aheda saw a gap in the market and created something that there was a need for, that is very smart business sense if you ask us!

How open are men about donning trendy swimwear? Do you have enough takers for the mens section?

The men’s swimwear market is huge and there are many contemporary and luxury brands out there right now. Men want to look just as good on the beach as women do, and so they should. Currently we are stocking American brand Solid & Striped in our menswear section. The classic cut and contemporary colours have been really popular.

What is your participating in events?

Since our launch in 2014 we have hosted a number of pop up shops throughout the region, in countries such as Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait and the UAE. As an online business it’s great to have the opportunity to meet new customers and touch base with our supporters around the region. What are your future plans?

We hope to continue to grow from strength to strength and establish ourselves as the leading online resort wear website globally. Start with keeping your head straight and looking forward. Gently tilt it to the left, then roll it back facing the ceiling and finish the roll by bringing it to the starting position.

Start in a rested position with arms to your sides. Roll your shoulders forward and bring them up towards your ears and continue to roll them towards your back and return to starting position.

Rotate the ankle first in clockwise and then in anti-clockwise motion. You can place the ball of your foot on the floor for support. Repeat with other foot.

Perform a suitcase deadlift without using dumb bells by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, bending at the knees with your torso perpendicular to the ground. Repeat 5 times.

Lift one foot off the ground at a 90 degree angle. Point the toe of the lifted foot up towards the ceiling and move your ankle in a clockwise direction.

Repeat on the other foot.

Owen Cunningham Wilson, aged 47 is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer and screenwriter. He was born in Dallas, Texas, to a photographer and an advertising executive.

His family, originally from Massachusetts, is of Irish descent.

Known for his smooth, subdued comedic personas, Wilson grew up alongside two other future actors: brothers Andrew and Luke.

Bottle Rocket (1996) was his debut feature film that was written by him with his great collaborator, Wes Anderson. They roomed together at the University of Texas, where Wilson studied as an English major. Both went on to write other movies like Rushmore (1998) and The Royal Tenenbaums which landed them Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2001. Wilson appeared in several big-budget films with comedic actor (and good friend) Ben Stiller, including Meet the Parents (2000) and its two sequels, Zoolander (2001) and Starsky & Hutch (2004).

In 2007, Wilson was treated for a suicide attempt in Los Angeles.

After his comeback, he starred in Drillbit Taylor and Marley & Me and later voiced animated characters in Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Marmaduke (2010), Cars 2 (2011) and Free Birds (2013). In 2016 he appeared as Hansel in Zoolander 2.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is an American television production/distribution studio that operates globally. As of 2015, it's the world's largest television production company measured by library and revenue. One of the studios most recent successes, House of Cards, is an American political drama television series created by Beau Willimon. It is an adaptation of the BBC's miniseries of the same name, based on the novel by Michael Dobbs.

The show premiered 2013 set in present-day Washington, D.C. House of Cards is the story of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a Democrat from South Carolina's 5th congressional district and House Majority Whip, who after being passed over for appointment as Secretary of State, initiates an elaborate plan to get himself into a position of greater power, aided by his wife, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). The series deals primarily with themes of ruthless pragmatism, manipulation and power.

To date, it has received 33 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Spacey and Outstanding Lead Actress for Wright. The show also earned eight Golden Globe Award nominations, with Wright winning for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in 2014 and Spacey winning for Best Actor – Television Series Drama in 2015.

Nancy Ajram (age 33) is a Lebanese pop folk singer and multi-platinum recording artist. Born in Lebanon to a Maronite Catholic, she developed a flair for music at a young age. At the age of eight, she appeared at a singing contest for kids on national television in Lebanon. At the age of 12, she participated in a Lebanese reality television competition, ‘Noujoum Al-Moustakbal, ("Stars of the Future"), where she won a gold medal. Subsequently, she started focusing on her voice and also took theory lessons, which led to the release of her first studio album as a teenager. Although her first two albums achieved moderate success, it was her lead single ‘Akhasmak Ah’ and third studio album ‘Ya Salam’ which gained her much popularity in the Arab World. The following year, she released another international best-seller ‘Ah W Noss’, which cemented her pop icon status in the Middle East. For her 2008 album ‘Bitfakkar FiEih’, she received her first ‘World Music Award (WMA)’ as the Best-selling Middle Eastern Artist.

Nancy Ajram is considered to be one of the richest and most successful music-stars in the Arab world.
