Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research A venue dedicated to the open exchange of knowledge and ideas, the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammad Al-Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research has welcomed more than 500 artists, speakers, poets and philosophers from around the world. The 20th century construction seamlessly blends together contemporary and traditional fabric into a single whole. It is noteworthy that this building of knowledge is built on the land of the original majlis (a place of sitting) of eminent intellectual Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.

Kurar House The Kurar House was established in 2007 to preserve the dying and unique Bahraini art of Kurar embroidery. Kurar is a form of embroidery using a golden thread. The Kurar ribbon is then sown into the garment and burnished to give a final characteristic shine to the garment.

Bin Faris House for Sut Music Opened in September 12, 2005, the Mohammed bin Faris Sut Music House is a museum commemorating the achievements of the Bahraini singer and musician Mohammed bin Faris. He was a master of a type of music that originated in the Arabian Gulf region, the Sut. Known for his own compositions and mastery of the art form, Bin Faris brought Sut music to new heights and gave it a particularly Bahraini form.

Shaikh Isa Bin Ali House The beautiful house of Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa offers a glimpse of the 19th century royal life. This house is characterised by authentic period architecture, including extensive wall carvings and wooden ceilings that are constructed in a traditional way using palm tree trunks. This house is considered one of the most impressive examples of Gulf Islamic architectures on the island.

‫أنشئ مركز الشيخ إبراهيم بن محمد آل خليفة‬ ‫للثقافة وال ��ب ��ح ��وث ك ��ي ي ��ك ��ون ملتقى للثقافة‬ ‫وت ��ب ��ادل األف ��ك ��ار وق ��د استضاف منذ افتتاحه في‬ ‫الثاني عشر من يناير ‪ 2002‬أكثر من ‪ 500‬فنان‬ ‫وم ��ح ��اض ��ر وش ��اع ��ر وف ��ي ��ل ��س ��وف م ��ن مختلف دول‬ ‫العالم‪ .‬يعود بناء هذا المعلم الذي يحتضن هذا‬ ‫المركز الثقافي إلى القرن العشرين وفق الطراز‬ ‫المعماري وهو يمزج في تصميمه ما بين النسيج‬ ‫المعماري التقليدي مع لمسات عصرية‪ .‬بني هذا‬ ‫المركز في الموقع األصلي للمجلس األول‪ ‬ال ��ذي‬ ‫كان يعقده الشيخ إبراهيم بن محمد آل خليفة‪،‬‬ ‫الذي كان من الشخصيات الفكرية البارزة‪.‬‬

‫بيت الكورار‬

‫يعود تأسيس ه��ذا البيت التراثي إل��ى سنة ‪2007‬‬ ‫بهدف الحفاظ على حرفة الكورار التقليدية التي تمثل‬ ‫فنا بحرينيا أص��ي�لا‪ .‬تعتبر حرفة ال��ك��ورار م��ن األعمال‬ ‫التراثية التي مارستها النساء ف��ي مدينة المحرق‪،‬‬ ‫الالئي كن يطرزن الثياب باستخدام خيوط من ذهب‬ ‫(الزري)‪ .‬يطرز شريط بخيوط من ذهب قبل أن يثبت‬ ‫في الثياب ليضفي عليه هالة مبهرة‪ .‬يوفر هذا البيت‬ ‫التراثي فضاء تلتقي فيه النسوة وينقلن إلى الجيل‬ ‫الشاب أسرار هذه الحرفة األصيلة‪.‬‬

‫اف��ت��ت��ح ب��ي��ت م��ح��م��د ب���ن ف��ارس‪ ‬ل��ف��ن ال���ص���وت ي��وم‬ ‫‪ 12‬سبتمبر ‪ 2005‬وه���و ع��ب��ارة ع��ن م��ت��ح��ف يخلد‬ ‫أع��م��ال المغني وال��م��وس��ي��ق��ي ال��ب��ح��ري��ن��ي محمد بن‬ ‫ف��ارس‪ .‬أعيد ترميم ه��ذا البيت في الموقع األصلي‬ ‫ل��م��ن��زل ال��ف��ن��ان ب��ن ف����ارس‪ ،‬ال���ذي ي��ع��ت��ب��ر رائ����دا في‬ ‫ت��ط��وي��ر ال��ن��غ��م ال��خ��ل��ي��ج��ي‪ ،‬وخ��اص��ة ف��ن ال��ص��وت‪ ،‬كما‬ ‫أرس��ى مدرسة في ه��ذا النمط من العزف الغنائي‪.‬‬ ‫كان محمد بن فارس فنانا أصيال أتقن موسيقى فن‬ ‫الصوت الذي نشأ في الجزيرة العربية‪ .‬اشتهر محمد‬ ‫بن فارس بإسهاماته في تطوير فن الصوت وارتقى‬ ‫بهذا ال��ن��وع م��ن الموسيقى إل��ى مستويات جديدة‬ ‫وأضفى عليه خاصة طابعا بحرينيا‪.‬‬

Kanyakumari, the southernmost point of India, is a spiritual sojourn of sorts for the modern traveller Words: Kunal Doley

Kanyakumari is on every travellers’ list, and for good reason. Geographically, the coastal town sits at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent – literally the last habitable place in India.

It is also the point of confluence of three major water bodies – the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. This small town in Tamil Nadu is also home to another unique geographical phenomenon – you can watch the sun rise and set at the same beach!

Culture-rich Swami Vivekananda, the famous Indian poet and philosopher, spent long periods of time meditating in Kanyakumari. In his honour, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial was constructed in 1970. It is one of the major tourist attractions and a sacred monument in Kanyakumari. It stands on one of the two rocks located about 500 metres off the mainland. Moving ahead, the Thiruvalluvar Statue is another marvel to witness. It is 95 feet high and stands upon a 38-foot rock that represents the 38 chapters of ‘virtue’ in the Thirukkural, classic Tamil sangam literature authored

by Valluvar.

While in Kanyakumari, you cannot miss this bright pink monument known as Gandhi Mandapan. After Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, his remains were cremated and sent to various parts of the country. Kanyakumari is one of the places where some of his ashes were displayed before being ritually deposited in the sea. After the ashes were removed, the

Gandhi Mandapam (a pillared structure used for public ritual) was built on the site where the ashes rested. The central spire of the pink facade also stands exactly 79 feet high in honour of Gandhi Ji’s age at the time of his death.

Kanyakumari is also home to several churches, one of them being the 100-year-old Church of Our Lady of Ransom on the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal. Built in the Gothic style of architecture with a strong Portuguese influence, the church is slightly off-white in appearance with three massive towering spires and stained glass windowpanes.

Another attraction of the church is the Central Tower. It is 153 feet high and is crowned with a cross of pure gold.

You can watch the sun rise and set at the same beach!

Back on track Kanyakumari was one of the many affected areas in the massive tsunami that rocked the world in 2004. In the memory of the deceased, a Tsunami Memorial was later erected on the seashore. The memorial is a 16-foot-high, blue-coloured statue made from steel. The monument shows a giant wave that is held in place by a ‘hand’, while the other ‘hand’ holds on to a lamp, probably depicting hope.

The plaque below it records the date and importance of this monument. Travelling to Kanyakumari gives a sense of absolute calm – and also a realisation that nature finally prevails.

‫ثراء ثقافي‬

‫أمضى الشاعر والفيلسوف الهندي الشهير سوامي‬ ‫فيفيكاناندا مدة طويلة من حياته في كانياكوماري‪ .‬في‬ ‫سنة ‪ 1970‬شيد نصب فيفي كاناندا التذكاري تكريما‬ ‫لهذه الشخصية البارزة‪ .‬يعتبر هذا النصب التذكاري من‬ ‫أهم المعالم السياحية والوجهات المقدسة في كانيا‬ ‫ك��وم��اري‪ .‬أقيم ه��ذا المعلم ال��ت��ذك��اري ف��وق صخرتين‬ ‫توجدان على بعد ‪ 500‬مترا من البلد األم‪ .‬يعتبر تمثال‬ ‫ثيروفالوفار تحفة أخرى تبهر كل من يزورها‪ .‬يبلغ ارتفاع‬ ‫هذا التمثال الضخم ‪ 95‬قدما وقد شيد على صخرة يناهز‬ ‫ارتفاعها ‪ 38‬قدما‪ ،‬تمثل ‪ 38‬فصال في “الفضيلة” في‬

‫زي����ارة ك��ان��ي��ا ك���وم���اري ف��رص��ة ال ت��ف��وت ل�لاس��ت��م��ت��اع‬ ‫بمشاهدة المعلم ال���وردي الشهير‪ ،‬وال���ذي يعرف‬ ‫ب��اس��م غ��ان��دي م��ان��دوب��ان‪ .‬ف��ع��ن��دم��ا اغ��ت��ي��ل ال��زع��ي��م‬ ‫التاريخي الهندي المهاتما غاندي سنة ‪ ،1948‬أحرقت‬ ‫رفاته وأرسل رمادها إلى مختلف مناطق البالد‪ .‬كانت‬ ‫مدينة كانياكوماري واحدة من المناطق التي اختيرت‬ ‫لعرض رماد المهاتما غاندي قبل نثرها في البحر وفق‬ ‫الطقوس التقليدية‪ .‬تقرر بعد ذلك إقامة نصب في‬ ‫المكان ال��ذي أحرقت فيه رف��ات الزعيم الهندي كي‬ ‫يستخدم كمكان ع��ام لممارسة الطقوس الدينية‪.‬‬ ‫يتوسط الصرح برج يصل ارتفاعه إلى ‪ 79‬قدما‪ ،‬تخليدا‬ ‫للمهاتما غ��ان��دي‪ ،‬ال���ذي اغ��ت��ي��ل وه��و ف��ي التاسعة‬ ‫والسبعين من عمره‪.‬‬

‫كانياكوماري مدينة تكثر فيها الكنائس‪ ،‬وم��ن بينها‬ ‫كنيسة ‪ Our Lady of Ransom‬التي تقع على ساحل‬ ‫خليج البنغال ويعود بناؤها إلى قرن من الزمن‪ .‬شيدت‬ ‫هذه الكنيسة على نمط العمارة القوطية ج��راء التأثير‬ ‫البرتغالي القوي في تلك الحقبة‪ .‬يغلب اللون األبيض‬ ‫على هذه الكنيسة التي يعلوها ثالثة أب��راج بنوافذها‬ ‫المزدانة بزجاجها الملون‪ .‬يصل ارتفاع البرج الرئيسي ‪153‬‬ ‫قدما‪ ،‬يعلوه صليب مصنوع من الذهب الخالص‪.‬‬

‫مدينة تنهض من جديد‬

‫كانت كانياكوماري إحدى المناطق الكثيرة التي تكبدت‬ ‫أض��رارا فادحة ج��راء إعصار التسونامي ال��ذي هز العالم‬ ‫س��ن��ة ‪ .2004‬تخليدا ل��ذك��رى ال��ض��ح��اي��ا ال��ذي��ن قضوا‬ ‫في تلك الكارثة أقيم نصب التسونامي عند ساحل‬ ‫كانياكوماري‪ .‬يبلغ ارتفاع النصب التذكاري ‪ 16‬قدما وهو‬ ‫يميل إلى اللون األزرق وقد صنع من النحاس‪ .‬تظهر‬ ‫في هذا النصب التذكاري يد وهي تمسك بموجة بحرية‬ ‫عاتية فيما تحمل اليد األخرى فانوسا‪ ،‬في لوحة رمزية‬ ‫معبرة عن األمل رغم األلم‪ .‬أما اللوحة التذكارية المثبتة‬ ‫في أسفل النصب التذكاري فهي توثق التاريخ وتؤكد‬ ‫على أهمية ورمزية المعلم‪ .‬يشعر المسافر الذي يحط‬ ‫الرحال في كانياكوماري بكثير من الهدوء في مكان‬ ‫تسوده الطبيعة الخالبة‪.‬‬ ‫‪GULFLIFe January 2018‬‬

Michael Phelps, the greatest swimmer of all-time, is happy to end his career at the right time and shift his focus to his family Over the last few months, Michael Phelps has been visiting college campuses around the United States, encouraging students to get involved by preaching the importance of water conservation in our daily lives. But the American star swimmer has a new focus in his life! The 23-time Olympic gold medallist is a family man now, living happily with wife Nicole and son Boomer.

“The whole experience of the last two years really changed my life – and changed my life for the best. It’s the happiest I’ve ever been. Having moments to share with my family is something I have always dreamt of. It’s kinda crazy when I look back on my career. I feel like I am living in a dream come true. This is everything I dreamed of as a kid,” shares Phelps.

Over five Olympics, from 2000 through ‘16, Michael Phelps’ tally of medals is more than anyone ever. However, in 2014, Phelps had a very difficult time when he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Despite the circumstances, he is proud to have made a comeback.

“Looking back on some of the things I went through and being able to come out of the other side in such a positive way is everything to me. Being able to finish my career exactly how I wanted to is the icing on the cake; coming back

and being able to get back to the top.

These last two years have probably been some of the most fun years in my career.”

Phelps added to his growing list of career accolades by winning the Laureus World Sports Award for Comeback of the Year in 2017.

Phelps is now a doting family man who is relishing life beyond the pool. So was it difficult to quit? Phelps says,“If I didn’t have the shoulder injuries, then I probably would have gone another four years. I would rather have a shoulder that is going to be healthy so I can hang out with my family, play with my son and do whatever he wants to do.”

So are we looking at another comeback

by Phelps? Kobe Br yant, a former basketball star from Los Angeles Lakers, tried to persuade Phelps to make yet another Olympic comeback whilst the duo were presenting a trophy at USA Swimming Team’s Golden Goggles Awards in Los Angeles in November.

Rumour has it Phelps has already set his mind on training for the 2032 Olympics, but this is for his one-year-old son Boomer.

Stepping out of the railway station in Roskilde, about 30 km west of Copenhagen, three giant ceramic jars greet the visitor. A closer look reveals they were commissioned for the 1000th anniversary of the town and therein lies Roskilde’s charm. A town that goes back to the era of the Vikings, there’s nothing much to indicate its ancient roots until you traverse a network of cobble-stoned streets which eventually lead to the city centre where the stunning and breathtaking Roskilde Cathedral is centre-stage.

Architectural wonders Roskilde Cathedral’s twin spires rising into the sky is a rather jaw-dropping sight. But it is even more stunning inside. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries with striking red colour bricks in an amalgamation of Gothic and Romanesque styles, and with construction continuing well into 15th century, the cathedral is massive and has rich and beautifully embellished interiors.

But more important is its grand place in Danish history: an astonishing 39 of its monarchs are buried here with some tombs bearing gorgeous and lavish ornamentation and embellishments.

Around it, the area looks more like a fairy-tale town with lovely lanes filled with gabled-roof yellow houses and rolling lawns and meadows interspersed with water bodies. Nearby is the beautiful Roskilde Palace, a Baroque style edifice built in the 18th century in bright yellow, which houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. Round the corner is the beautiful Roskilde Convent. There is also the Roskilde Museum and a host of other ancient churches that make for an interesting visit.

Ships of glory The Viking Ship Museum, which stands on the Roskilde harbour, is considered the pride of Denmark and is perhaps more famous than the cathedral and other structures. A massive warehouse-like building, it houses five ships that were excavated from the Skuldelev area, which go back an estimated 1,000 years. The ships have been reconstructed on metallic armatures with only the recovered material, leaving the rest bare but adequate enough to point to the magnificence of the vessels.

What makes the museum fascinating is that it is a living museum with a workshop that

builds ships to Viking specification and uses prehistoric tools. These ships are then launched for sailing expeditions. Alongside, there are a host of education and awareness activities where visitors can interact with experts and learn how to weave sails, twist ropes and make Viking ship models.

To make the experience more adventurous, the museum also offers boat rides on Viking replicas, which use only oars and sails and is led by an experienced instructor. It is a laborious and strenuous task and brings home the hardships that the Vikings faced and yet ran rampant around the world, conquering new lands and expanding their territory. Despite all this, Roskilde today is an adorable European town.

‫االنغماس‬ If travel for you is more than exploring places what you naturally see in your everyday life, you need to try the street foods of the places you visit. And the streets of Southeast Asia are all about that. Apart from unseen places and meeting new people, Southeast Asia is a paradise for people who are ready to taste something new. Whether it’s discovering new dishes, or giving a tinge of flavour to your taste buds, these countries are a treasure trove of recipes of dishes.

Thailand A typical Thai rice and curry is one of the favourite among tourists in Bangkok. If you happen to visit the Jatujak Weekend Market, visit the stall called Prik Yuak, which is relatively smart compared to other places in the market. Its best dish is the rice vermicelli with fish ball green curry, which is always tasty. The fish balls in the curry are well rounded, without bones and not too hot, but perfumed with aromatic spices, fish sauce and palm

sugar. Typical herbs such as Thai sweet basil and green aubergines make for a crunchy and delicious addition.

Vietnam Pho is the most famous Vietnamese street food. Though it’s more popular in the northern part of the country, you can find steaming bowls of it in the city too.

Made using fresh flat rice noodles, the dish has a good broth made from oxtail bones. It needs to be clear, not muddy and dark, and fragrant with beef, anise and ginger. You can serve this soup with several toppings of meat, adding spring onion, beansprouts, basil and a piece of lemon.

Laos An addictive steamed dessert sold on the streets of Laos, Khao tom is made with a mixture of sticky rice, black bean and fresh coconut cream, which is then steamed in 4inch-long banana leaf parcels. The dish can also be made with ground rice powder and other ingredients can be substituted in the mix, such as peanuts. It’s affordable, filling and delicious, and widely available.

Malaysia Laksa dishes come in many variety, but the Assam variety is one of the most popular, especially in Penang. While the delicious fish noodle soup may or may not have originated here, but it has been widely served and liked across the peninsula. It is made by placing thick rice vermicelli in the base of a bowl, adding chopped lettuce, cucumbers, mint, pineapple and onions and then pouring spicy fish broth over the top. The sourness comes from tamarind or, sometimes, sour mangosteen. If the sourness of the dish doesn’t get you, then the spice surely will.

What do you love about your work?

Things unfold naturally, when it’s meant to be. Never force or push fate.

The best part about my job is that I am almost always surrounded by nature and that I get to meet new people. The most important part is that I am able to communicate important messages about beach littering and recycling.

Your favourite quote?

East, West, South or North makes little difference. No matter what your destination, just be sure to make every journey, a journey within. If you travel within, you’ll travel the whole wide world and beyond. Shams Tabrizi

Growing up, I’ve always been interested in different cultures and indigenous tribes of the world. My dream has been to travel the world.

I am fascinated by the rich experience of history and culture that each destination has to offer.

Bahrain has a multicultural ecosystem where a huge spectrum of religions and cultures co-exist in perfect harmony. A perfect example is the Manama Souq where you can find a Mosque and a Hindu temple in the same block. This diversity inspires us to be open to new experiences .

If you could travel back in time, where would you like to go and why?

I would like to re-live my university days in Florida where I used to travel back and forth to school on my bike. That place, especially the biking scene, has really changed my perspective about travel and adventure.

The Bollywood movie from India, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Here a bunch of travellers set out on a life-changing journey to Spain and meet an amazing guide. This movie became an inspiration for me.

I love Bali. I was drawn by the locals who were very warm and welcoming.

What drives your holiday-making decisions?

My interest lies somewhere in between an active holiday and a cultural time away. When I am in a new country, I have this zeal to explore and understand the dynamics of that place.

If a friend asked you for advice on where to go for a two week break, what would you suggest?

I would recommend India as there are so many different cuisines, palaces, handicraft museums and other places that the country has to offer.

LOOSEN UP

Inflight Exercises 01 Upper back Flex Place both hands behind the head and arch your back tilting your chin up towards the ceiling. Hold for 10 seconds, relax and repeat.

02 Neck roll Start with keeping your head straight and looking forward. Gently tilt it to the left, then roll it back facing the ceiling and finish the roll by bringing it to the starting position.

03 Shoulder roll Start in a rested position with arms to your sides. Roll your shoulders forward and bring them up towards your ears and continue to roll them towards your back and return to starting position.

04 Ankle rotation Rotate the ankle first in clockwise and then in anti-clockwise motion. You can place the ball of your foot on the floor for support.

Repeat with other foot.

05 Trunk flex Perform a suitcase deadlift without using dumb bells by standing with your feet apart, bending at the knees with your torso perpendicular to the ground. Repeat 5 times.

06 Foot flex Lift one foot off the ground at a 90 degree angle. Point the toe of the lifted foot up towards the ceiling and move your ankle in a clockwise direction. Repeat on the other foot.

In-seat PC Power The available PC power is 110V/60Hz and can only be used in flight when the power indicator is green. Yellow or red lights indicate that power is not available and the device will operate on its own battery.

Onboard the A320 and A321, customers can use the PED power outlets provided to charge their personal devices.

If you are flying within the GCC, headsets will not be given out due to the short duration of the flight. However, you may use your own headsets.
