Stretches of white, powdery beaches surrounding crystalline waters, shallow atolls surrounded by the ocean, coral reefs perfect for snorkelling and diving, there’s no end to the must-do sights or attractions in the Maldives. An archipelago that includes over 1,150 islands and sandbanks, the Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean, about 1,000 km southwest of Sri Lanka. The archipelago extends more than 820 km from north to south, and 130 km from east to west. The country is widely dispersed but it has less than 400,000 permanent inhabitants, making it one of the world’s 25 least inhabited countries.

Made up of low-lying coral islands, which are divided into 26 different atolls (ring-shaped island chains encircling a lagoon, either partially or completely), the Maldives is the world’s lowest-lying country, with an average height of just three feet above sea level. However, what’s good about it is that you can tackle it without an agenda. You can choose to snorkel directly from your over-water villa, tootle along coral sands or wander aimlessly through tropical jungle vegetation and feel rewarded by simply getting lost.

Commonly two-metre high, there are waves everywhere. There are few other places in the far south too, like the Laamu and Gaafu Alifu/Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls, that offer superb opportunities for surfers to have great fun.

Snorkelling and Diving

Taking the plunge into the deep blue is one of the most fun things to do and the rewards are massive, especially in Maldives. Rightly called as a world-class scuba-diving destination, the Maldivian waters boasts of an enormous variety of fish life, and there’s a good chance you’ll see some of the biggest marine creatures. There are hundreds of famous dive sites, with dozens accessible from nearly every resort.

British Loyalty Wreck, Dhidhdhoo Beyru, Fish Head and Hammerhead Point are counted among the best dive sites in the Maldives.

Surf the Waves

The Maldives is famous across the world for extreme surfing, with Malé Atoll being the most convenient because of its proximity to Malé Airport. The biggest waves hit Maldivian shores between April and October, proving great surfing opportunities, lasting a couple of days.

Dolphin Watching

attractions in the Maldives, the Whale Submarine is a chance for the young and old to visit the underwater world without getting wet, while enjoying the experience of diving in a real submarine. Blue or yellowstriped snappers and common lionfish, yellow boxfish and turtles can be seen on most dives. The submarine also dives to some historical sites such as a shipwreck or a shark feeding area, but it depends on the time of the day, water pressure, etc. It is fully air-conditioned, has a normal atmospheric pressure and superb safety features. The whole tour takes about three hours and is an amazing experience, especially for children and non-divers.

The Maldives is home to 21 species of whale and dolphin that can be frequently sighted as they cross in the channels from one side of an atoll to another. Many resorts organise cruises to the sea-lanes that dolphins regularly use, and independent dolphin watching cruises can be arranged by the accommodation provider. Muli Channel in the Meemu Atoll is one of the best spots to watch dolphins in the Maldives and the best time to find them is in the afternoon, between 1530 to 1700 hrs.

This 1972 film, the story is based on SS Poseidon, a fictional aged luxury liner sailing from New York City to Athens on her final voyage when she is overturned by a tsunami.

The story centres around how a preacher leads the small group of survivors to safety.

A Night to Remember

This 1958 film plays out the final night of RMS Titanic before it sank and stars Kenneth More.

Said to be one of the most historically accurate versions of the Titanic, the movie showcases how the unsinkable Titanic collides with an iceberg and the chaos that ensues after. The film's climactic sinking of the vessel is spot on and is just 37 minutes shorter than the actual tragedy and has been shot in real time.

The action and restrained performances of the team is a big highlight of this movie and the focus really is on the ship itself, which makes this one for all sea lovers.

The Flame Towers are a marvel of modern architecture where millennials wander the streets dressed in the latest high-end fashion.

While there are several tourist attractions around the city, Baku is home to some of the best museums in Azerbaijan.

National Museum of History

The National Museum in Baku houses over 300,000 artefacts. Operational since 1920 in the mansion of the oil industrialist and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev, the museum is dedicated to the history of Azerbaijan, including the Russo-Japanese War, Russian Civil War, and the two World Wars.

Azerbaijan Carpet Museum

Carpet weaving has influenced the local identity of Azerbaijan for more than 3000 years. The museum celebrates this rich tradition. Opened in 1967 as the first specialised museum for carpets in the world, it was shifted to a modern building shaped in the form of a rolled-up carpet, on the edge of the Caspian Sea from a mosque back in 2015.

National Museum of Art

This Museum represents the art of Azerbaijan, West Europe, Russia and the East. First established in 1936, the collection houses more than 17,000 art objects with some objects dating back to the 4th millennium BC.

Baku Museum of Modern Art

Opened in 2009, this modern art museum displays over 800 paintings and sculptures

by Azerbaijani artists from the 1960s and 1970s. Designed by Altay Sadykhzadeh, the art exhibits include pieces from Picasso and Dali donated by private collectors and houses a section dedicated to local photographers.

Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex

Tourists will find three different types of museums here: Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, the Castle Museum, and the Museum of Antiques. Covering an area of 1.5 hectares, there are several attractions here, including rock paintings, household items, antique jewellery, weapons and ancient coins.

There are also over 2,000 different ancient structures including mounds and burial places that you can see.

Miniature Book Museum

This one of a kind Miniature Book Museum is dedicated to miniature-sized books, including the works of Dostoyevsky, Pushkin, Chukovsky and Gogol. Opened in 2002 by Zarifa Saahova, you can find books written in numerous languages, including Russian, Azeri, German and English. The oldest book found here is a copy of the Quran, dating to the 17th century.

‫باكو‪ ،‬عاصمة أذربيجان‪ ،‬مدينة جميلة تمتاز بإطاللتها‬ ‫الخالبة على ساحل بحر قزوين‪ .‬تشتهر هذه المدينة‬ ‫بأبراج النار‪ ،‬أو "شعلة باكو"‪ ،‬وهي عبارة عن ثالث‬ ‫ناطحات زجاجية زرقاء متعرجة تجسد روعة العمارة‬ ‫المعاصرة‪ ،‬كما أنها تطل على ال��ش��وارع التي تزخر‬ ‫ب��أرق��ى ب��وت��ي��ك��ات ال��م��وض��ة ال��ت��ي ي��رت��اده��ا ال��ش��ب��اب‬ ‫م��ن أب��ن��اء األلفية‪ .‬تزخر باكو بالعديد م��ن المعالم‬ ‫السياحية‪ ،‬إض��اف��ة إل��ى بعض المتاحف‪ ،‬التي تعتبر‬ ‫ضمن األفضل في أذربيجان‪.‬‬

‫المتحف الوطني للتاريخ‬

‫يضم المتحف الوطني للتاريخ في باكو أكثر من ‪300‬‬ ‫أل��ف قطعة أث��ري��ة وق��د فتح أب��واب��ه منذ سنة ‪1920‬‬ ‫في قصر مملوك لرجل األعمال حاجي زين العابدين‬ ‫تاجييف‪ ،‬ال��ذي ينشط ف��ي ق��ط��اع الصناعة النفطية‬ ‫وهو يعرف بدعمه للمشاريع الخيرية وقد خصص هذا‬ ‫المتحف للتاريخ األذري‪ ،‬مع تسليط األضواء أيضا على‬ ‫الحروب الروسية‪-‬اليابانية والحرب األهلية الروسية‬ ‫والحربين العالميتين األولى والثانية‪.‬‬

‫متحف السجاد‬

‫أنشىء هذا المتحف الجميل احتفاء بتقاليد صناعة‬ ‫السجاد العريقة‪ ،‬التي تعود ج��ذوره��ا إل��ى أكثر من‬ ‫‪ 3000‬سنة وهي تدخل في نسيج الهوية المحلية‬ ‫في أذرب��ي��ج��ان‪ .‬افتتح ه��ذا المعلم سنة ‪ 1967‬وهو‬ ‫يعتبر أول متحف من نوعه مختص في السجاد على‬ ‫مستوى العالم قبل أن ينتقل من المقر األصلي في‬ ‫أحد المساجد سنة ‪ 2015‬إلى بناية حديثة في طرازها‬ ‫المعماري ومصممة على شكل سجادة ضخمة مطوية‬ ‫تطل على بحر قزوين‪.‬‬

“Escapism” is the operative word in Potsdam. So, too, is “indulgence.” It may be mere minutes by train from the hustle and bustle of Berlin, but visitors to Potsdam could be forgiven for thinking they’d taken a time machine to an earlier era. Pick a direction along the tree-lined streets and walkways, and it feels like you’re wandering through a living museum.

Without concerns

No matter where your wanderings take you, be sure to check out Sanssouci. The name of the “German answer to Versailles” means “without concerns” for a reason.

Perhaps the most tranquil spot in all of Germany, hours pass while strolling its expansive grounds and marvelling at its Rococo palaces in the blink of an eye. The perfect place for families and couples, don’t forget to have tea or coffee at one of the many picturesque cafes and teahouses, or take in a performance from the flute players that sometimes perform in period costume.

Equally tranquil is the Church of Peace. Essentially serving as one “entrance” to Sanssouci, walking the High Medieval Italian-style church’s colonnades also has the effect of melting one’s worries away. It’s also especially romantic during the winter months, when snow might be dusting the grounds and numerous statues.

Connecting to the more recent past, Potsdam has also played a key role in some of the most important events in Europe in the last few decades. Visitors today can visit the Cecilienhof, the English Tudor-style palace that hosted the Potsdam Conference near the end of World War II. Nearby is also the Glienicker Brücke, better known as the “Bridge of Spies”. The site of many prisoner exchanges between East and West during the Cold War, it recently had a central role in the 2015 Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks-starring film simply called Bridge of Spies.

A bit harder to find, but no less interesting, is Krampnitz. A former German, and later Soviet, military base, you may have seen it before: after all, scenes from Hollywood flicks like Enemy at the Gates, The Monuments Men and Valkyrie were shot here because

it’s been so well-preserved and is close to Potsdam’s Babelsberg Film Studio, where Hollywood blockbusters from V for Vendetta, Captain America: Civil War and The Bourne Supremacy to The Hunger Games have been filmed.

Doing DÖNER

It may have been invented elsewhere, but Germany has taken the Döner kebab and turned it into a national staple. And why not?

Not only is the combination of chicken or lamb with flatbread, onion, salad and sauce delicious, but also quite affordable. And fortunately, Potsdam has plenty of great places to try it, especially along Brandenburger Straße (Brandenburg Street) in the quaint city centre in front of the Brandenburg Gate (older than the famous site of the same name in Berlin, but no less impressive). Tip: if feeling adventurous, try the “scharf” (“spicy”) variety and take it along for a picnic.

Equally, if your adventurous self beckons you, head to the Riverlife Adventurer Centre and try biking, rollerblading, rock climbing or abseiling. Brisbane provides plenty of choices in the food department as well.

Gauge in South Brisbane is the hub of innovation and provides a delightful experience to the foodie in you. You can try their breakfast and maybe head for a healthy bout of sightseeing.

For a more authentic experience, you could try the nutty flavoured Grub or the Lamington, which is in fact, the “national cake of Australia”. Traditional Bahraini arts and crafts come alive at the Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre where master craftsmen keep ancient traditions alive

On a quiet lane just off the Mazarea Highway in Al Jasra village in northwestern Bahrain is a nondescript low compound wall, which encompasses masses of greenery. Stepping in, the visitor is surrounded by plants, bushes and scattered trees with occasional seating spaces in between, with paved pathways leading off. The Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre is the repository of Bahrain’s traditional arts and crafts.

It is indeed a fascinating place to walk from one store front to another, encountering the rhythmic sound of a manual loom or the gentle tapping of a little hammer against metal. Apart from these, the rest is all silence saved for the rustling of leaves in the wind and the occasional bird call.

The centre was set up in 1990 under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa with the aim to encourage and showcase traditional Bahraini arts and crafts such as weaving,

pottery, wood work, basket weaving, embroidery, ceramics, boat building, inlay work and wooden chests and much more.

In addition, it also envisages educating local youngsters in traditional arts and crafts and providing an opportunity to continue the tradition.

The move seems to be effective. There is a steady flow of visitors while each enclosure has master craftsmen with varying numbers of apprentices busy engaged in their craft, each more mesmerising than the other. In the pottery and porcelain area, it is riveting to see the potter throw clay on the wheel and produce exquisite

artifacts while a handful of apprentices are trying their hand at handcrafting clay and doing art work before the pieces go into the kiln for firing. Nearby, the master boatmaker demonstrate traditional wooden boatmaking on miniatures while the shelves were filled with beautiful masterpieces with delicate sails and beautiful carving.

So it goes on-a beautiful instrument takes shape before your eyes as does a beautifully inlaid chest while elsewhere, an expert effortlessly carves a gypsum board. But for the visitor, it is strangely soul-satisfying to see them take shape.

The hawker centres are loved by both locals and travellers alike. Being an integral part of Singaporean culture, they have been under the international spotlight for years and have been featured in travel shows, documentaries and even on one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies, Crazy Rich Asians! In 2013, internationally acclaimed chef Gordon Ramsay participated in the Hawker Heroes Challenge

and had a cook-off against three prominent Singaporean hawkers.

Since their inception in 1970s, hawker centres have raised their levels of comfort and hygiene. Being open-aired spaces, high ceilings, modified roof structures and installations of fans have improved the overall experience. Hawker centres are dubbed ‘community dining rooms’ and adopt a freeseating system where each table has its own number. Tables usually accommodate four people or more, so sharing tables is commonplace in hawker centres.

Reserve a table before it is too late

Most hawker stalls are usually ‘self-service’, where customers collect the food themselves.

However, some stalls still deliver food to the table, where customers provide their table number upon ordering and then wait for the food to arrive.

One Singaporean quirk that might be surprising to visitors is ‘chope-ing’ or reserving a seat at hawker centres.

Singaporeans usually place an inexpensive, personal item on the table to reserve their seats while they queue to purchase food. So if you see a tissue packet or a name card on the table, it means that the place is taken.

Future Plans

With hawker centres playing such a huge role in the daily lives of Singaporeans, Singapore has plans to place the hawker culture on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

They are a reflection of Singapore’s multiracial and multi-ethnic society where people of various races coexist in harmony.

Artistic inspirations Vincent Van Gogh continues to inspire amateur and professional artists across the world. An institution unto himself, he continues to be extremely popular among art practitioners and connoisseurs and the literati across the world till this date. The artistic world consistently applauds and appreciates him in equal measure and Vincent Van Gogh continues to be known as one of the finest painters of his era.

Van Gogh, however, had a tragic existence and received unparalleled acclaim for his artistic vision only after his untimely death at the age of 37 on July 29, 1890. It was due to the persistent efforts of his sister-in-law, Jo Van Gogh-Bonger that his defining works of art caught the eye of art connoisseurs across the world and he finally received recognition for his indomitable contribution to the world of art.

Life's Journey

Over the years, his paintings have fetched record-breaking sums of money with his 'Portrait of Dr. Gachet' fetching $82.5 million in 1990! After adjustments made in terms of the inflation rate, this painting constitutes one of the most expensive purchases in the world of art to date. Today, Vincent Van Gogh is fondly remembered by his admirers and is counted among the finest painters of the modern era in Europe.

Born and raised in an upper-middleclass family, Van Gogh began painting at a relatively young age. ‫لمسة‬ ‫العباقرة‬ ‫فنسنت ف���ان غ���وخ رس���ام ه��ول��ن��دي مبدع‬ ‫اليزال حتى اليوم يلهم الفنانين المحترفين‬ ‫وال��ه��واة في مختلف أنحاء العالم‪ .‬رغ��م أنه‬ ‫ل��م يعش طويال فقد ت��رك إرث��ا ثريا وتحول‬ ‫إلى مدرسة فنية قائمة بذاتها‪ .‬يصنف فان‬ ‫غ���وخ ك��رس��ام ان��ط��ب��اع��ي وه���و ي��ت��م��ت��ع حتى‬ ‫اليوم بشعبية كبيرة بين أهل الفن والخبراء‬ ‫العارفين بهذا الميدان واألدب��اء‪ .‬يظل فان‬ ‫غوخ من ألمع الفنانين من أبناء جيله كما أن‬ ‫لوحاته الفنية تظل تلقى الرواج وتباع بأغلى‬ ‫األثمان‪.‬‬

‫رحلة العمر‬

‫ول���د فينسنت ف���ان غ���وخ ون��ش��أ ف��ي عائلة‬ ‫تنتمي إلى الطبقة االجتماعية الميسورة وقد‬ ‫بدأ الرسم وتفتقت موهبته االستثنائية في‬ ‫س��ن مبكرة‪ .‬ت��أث��ر بالرسامين االنطباعيين‬ ‫الذين عاصرهم كما ساهمت تجاربه الشخصية‬ ‫ف��ي م��وط��ن��ه األم‪ ،‬ه��ول��ن��دا‪ ،‬أو ف��ي ال��ب��ل��دان‬ ‫األوروبية التي زارها في صقل موهبته الفنية‪.‬‬ ‫فقد تنقل ما بين لندن وباريس‪ ،‬إضافة إلى‬ ‫مدينة آرل ف��ي ج��ن��وب ف��رن��س��ا‪ .‬رغ��م أن��ه لم‬ ‫يعش عمرا مديد فقد كان فنانا غزير اإلنتاج‪،‬‬ ‫ت��رك إرث��ا يضم ‪ 2100‬عمال فنيا‪ ،‬م��ن بينها‬

What attracted you to sculptures?

I am fond of sculptures. I have experimented with many materials, such as glass, bronze, clay, granite and marble. Each has its own set of challenges, which I find fascinating.

Which artists have inspired you?

Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick, Isamu Noguchi and Barbara Hepworth.

Name a few of your favourite sculptures?

The Couple, Sleeping Cat, The Toy, Village Lady, Family, Memory’s Shadow, Islands of Memory, The rooster, She/Him and Faces.

What mediums do you work in and why?

What is your greatest challenge?

Marketing myself as an artist.

What do you like doing when you are not making sculptures?

I fall back to my design practice.

I work with Metal, Glass and Granite. I love both the processes of addition (Building) in materials such as metal and also of subtraction (carving) using materials such as glass or granite. With metal, I usually use recycled pieces to build an artwork. In glass and granite, I would carve away from the volume so as to free a form or idea contained inside.

To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?

I was exposed to art from a very young age, spending my early years in the studio of my late father, Artist Nasser Al-Yousif, while he worked.

I came to appreciate the process in which he manifested his art. He used to tell me that a work of art is the result of hard labour; first would come a realisation, then ideas, followed by direction and delivery. Thus, my father shaped the way I thought and approached my subjects. gulflife.online

Why are you so passionate about sculptures?

Unlike a painting that essentially is a twodimensional medium, a sculpture lives in the three dimensional world. The viewer can explore this three dimensionality and find his/her favourite angle. This way new interpretations about the work can be deduced. Also, I like the way in which stubborn materials give way to determination and skill.

Describe yourself in three sentences.

I am a workaholic. I’m always thinking about concepts, how to re-approach them, looking for patterns, connections, or alternative outcomes. I tend to stay humble about many things.

List three things nobody knows about you.

I have two companion parrots (friends) in my studio. “Coco”, a yellow headed amazon and “Ollie”, a pink Galah cockatoo.

What other forms of creativity do you like, other than sculpture?

I am a designer in the fields of industrial design, environmental design and branding.

I am also passionate about printmaking.

Any advice for artists trying to get established?

Stay true to your beliefs and never stop learning new techniques or venture into new mediums. And don't be afraid of failure and to challenge oneself.

‫ما هي الخامات التي تستخدمها في‬ ‫عملك ولماذا؟‬

‫أنا أستخدم في عملي مواد متنوعة مثل المعدن والزجاج‬ ‫والجرانيت كما أحب عدة عمليات تشمل إضافة المواد مثل‬ ‫المعادن‪ ،‬أو حذف بعض المواد األخرى في عملية النقش‬ ‫باستخدام عدة مواد مثل الزجاج والجرانيت‪ .‬أنا أستخدم‬ ‫القطع المعدنية بعد إع��ادة تدويرها كي أبتكر أعمالي‬ ‫الفنية‪ .‬أنا أستخدم أيضا الزجاج والجرانيت في المنقوشات‬ ‫التي أنجزها والتي أعبر من خاللها عما يخالجني من أفكار‪.‬‬

‫لمن تدين بدخولك إلى عالم الفن؟‬

‫لقد دخلت عالم الفن منذ نعومة أظفاري كما أنني أمضيت‬ ‫األعوام األولى من حياتي وأنا أرافق والدي في األستديو‬ ‫وكنت أتابعه وهو يعمل‪ ،‬فتعرفت على عالم الفن عن‬ ‫كثب وخبرت أس��راره وسبرت أغ��واره حتى أصبحت مولعا‬ ‫به‪ .‬كان والدي يقول لي أن كل عمل فني إنما هو عصارة‬ ‫جهد ومعاناة كما أن��ه ينبع عن فكرة تنبثق من مخيلة‬ ‫الفنان لتتحول إلى عمل فني متكامل يحكي عن نفسه‪.‬‬ ‫لعب والدي دورا رئيسيا في صهر أفكاري وساعدني على‬ ‫شق طريقي وبناء مقاربتي للمسائل واألمور‪.‬‬

‫ما سر شغفك بالنحت؟‬

‫على عكس ال��رس��م‪ ،‬ال��ذي يعتبر وسيلة ثنائية األبعاد‪،‬‬ ‫فإن النحت يدخلنا إلى عالم ثالثي األبعاد‪ .‬يمكن للناظر‬

‫أن يستكشف المنحوتة الثالثية األب��ع��اد ويختار الزاوية‬ ‫التي يفضلها‪ .‬هكذا يلهم العمل الفني القراءات والرؤى‬ ‫المختلفة‪ .‬أنا أحب ذلك العناد الذي أجده في بعض المواد‬ ‫التي أستخدمها في عملي وهو ما يزيد في إذكاء عزيمتي‬ ‫ويرتقي بمهاراتي االبداعية‪.‬‬

‫أنا أعمل أيضا في مجال التصميم في قطاعات الصناعة‬ ‫والبيئة والعالمات التجارية كما أنني شغوف بالطباعة‪.‬‬

‫أي نصيحة تقدمها للفنانين الذين‬ ‫يطمحون للبروز؟‬

‫أنصحهم ب��أن يكونوا صادقين م��ع قناعاتهم ويحرصوا‬ ‫باستمرار على تعلم التقنيات ال��ج��دي��دة ويستكشفوا‬ ‫قنوات مبتكرة‪ .‬أنصحهم أال يخافوا من الفشل وأن يتحدوا‬ ‫أنفسهم‪.‬‬
