Throughout 2018, we close chapters and open new opportunities for Gulf Air as we achieve major #yearofchange strategy milestones. In November, we will be proudly welcoming our fourth Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 to our fleet and introduce it to our non-stop route to and from Bangkok, making it another exclusive Dreamliner flight alongside London and Casablanca.

Additionally, the Kingdom of Bahrain will host the 5th edition of the Bahrain International Airshow from November 14-16. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Jahangir’s Palace and Akbar’s Mausoleum are few other wonderful monuments that are worth exploring. The city is a great destination for foodies to sample the famous Agra petha and flavourful chaat and lassi.

BIAS growing by leaps & bounds Bahrain welcomes the global aviation industry to the country under the patronage of HM the King. The show’s role as a platform for business generation and networking will once again be showcased at the three-day event Bahrain’s airshow takes to the skies this month with the largest and most exciting lineup of activities both in the sky and on the ground.

Taking place from November 14-16 for trade and extended by one day from 14-17 for the public, it is the fastest growing airshow in the Middle East and is now recognised as a preeminent platform for business generation and networking across the Aerospace industry. A major first for the trade show is the introduction of the Space industry with major space exhibitors from Russia, India and the UAE. Organisers of BIAS have created a public show running alongside the trade event since its inception. The public area near the Sakhir Airbase provides families an opportunity to enjoy different aspects of the show, with aerobatic teams performing exciting displays in the sky, and an array of entertainment acts and performances on the ground.

A five hour daily flying display programme will thrill spectators with some of the world’s best aerobatic flying teams showing off their skills in the air. From military jets to big civilian airliners and historic classics, this year’s lineup will be the most diverse yet.

Al Worden – the Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 15 lunar mission in 1971 – will be attending the show and touring local schools and universities during his visit to share his experience and inspire the future generation for a career in aerospace.

Confirming that Bahrain is a great place to do business, 100% of trade exhibitors who attended the 2016 show, when asked about their propensity to attend future shows and to return to Bahrain for business or holiday purposes, confirmed that they would return, underscoring the show’s position as one of Bahrain’s most important events.

The dark, starless night has a dense quality to it and the paths lit by flickering candles are surreal, throwing deep shadows onto the towering mysterious walls on either side. The path snakes its way through crevices and uneven ground finally to end at the Treasury, the most spectacular sight of Petra, the ancient ruined Nabataean city in Jordan, often called “The Lost City”, since it remained largely hidden and was rediscovered only in the early 19th century.

There is a definite romance in seeing the site at night but it is even more spectacular in the morning. Situated amidst dramatic canyons, gorges and mountainsides, it spreads over 264 sq. km in Jordan’s Wadi Musa, a magnificent valley with vibrant red and orange cliffs rising several metres into the sky. There are hundreds of sites, all directly carved into the cliff sides and are mostly believed to be more than 2000 years old going as far back as 400 BC.

The Nabataeans, a Bedouin tribe, controlled much of the Middle East and established thriving trading centres before they were conquered by the Roman Empire. Among many such centres was Petra. The remaining ruins, both traditional Nabataean and Greco-Roman, such as the network of irrigation systems, water harvesting, transport and storage, point to the expertise and skills of the Nabataeans.

Petra’s entrance is through a narrow gorge called the Siq and stretches for more than a kilometre with towering cliffs rising to more than 80 metres on either side.

The cliff colours are dazzling in various shades of red, orange and pink. The gorge directly leads to the phenomenal Treasury, a massive structure, over 30 metres high and 40 metres wide, carved into sheer rock face with exquisite motifs and patterns. This is possibly the most famous of Petra’s sites and finds itself featuring as the backdrop in films such as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

But Petra’s magnificence lies much beyond this. The whole valley is stunningly beautiful with hundreds of rock cut tombs adorned with intricate carvings, a massive Roman-style theatre that can seat over 3,000 people, temples, arched and colonnaded streets, sacrificial altars, obelisks and several other structures all of which point to the architectural genius of the Nabataeans. is the Ad-Deir monastery, which is accessed by climbing 800 steps cut into the rock and which overlooks the valley offering spectacular panoramic views. For history and culture buffs, there are also two museums, Petra Nabataean Museum and Petra Archaeological Museum, which provide more information and displays on the excavations carried out in Petra and the rich heritage of the Nabataeans.

Bahrain's natural pearls and gemmological excellence The Kingdom of Bahrain is the world’s premier destination for natural pearls and boasts a pearling heritage that spans over 4,000 years. Bahrain’s heritage in this regard is well documented, with ancient authors commenting upon the superior pearls found in the Kingdom’s waters. Indeed, pearling was central to Bahrain’s economy from the 5th millennium BC to the 1930s. Bahrain aims to bring forward its pearling heritage into modern times by promoting its natural pearl and jewellery industry by boosting consumer's confidence when they purchase jewellery items.

Natural pearls are one of nature’s most splendid bounties and are amongst the rarest of all gems, gracing all that have an eye for sophistication and elegance. Distinguishing between natural pearls and cultured pearls previously was a matter of experience for pearl merchants and divers. Pearl identification and verification nowadays is scientific and requires a specialised laboratory such as the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT).

DANAT was set up to build upon the noteworthy work 38

of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism’s Pearl & Gemstone Testing Laboratory, the first of its kind in the Middle East.

DANAT is a reflection of Bahrain’s ancient pearling history and its strong desire to protect and revive its heritage as well as support the jewellery industry, on a local, regional and international level. DANAT is led

by Kenneth Scarratt, a world-renowned gemmologist with a particular specialism in pearl studies. Winter in Europe is full of celebrations. With a wide range of events to discover, this time of the year is as fun as summer. Although cold, the festivals and celebrations are definitely worth braving the weather for. Here are a few events to check out if you’re in Europe in the coming months.

Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival, Bruges, Belgium

While there are a number of ice festivals in the United Kingdom, the Snow and Ice Festival in Bruges is probably the most distinguished.

What makes this year’s special is that the festival will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse. On display, will be a fantasy world of magic, starring the most-loved heroes of Disney Classics, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. The sculptures are created using only ice and water.

Amsterdam is known for its canals – there are around 165 canals, totalling 50 kilometres, overpassed by a little over 1,250 bridges.

During the Light Festival, the city's streets and waterways are decorated with light displays of every kind, shape and form. Each year, there are hundreds of submissions by designers, architects and artists from around the world (the past years have included submission by prominent artists such as Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei). A selection committee then chooses about 35 artworks, which make up the festival’s installations.

Winter Solstice, UK

But these airports have turned that whole idea on its head, offering a host of services so that travellers can make the most of their time between flights.

Munich

One of Europe’s busiest, Munich Airport features airy, glass-heavy architecture and a Visitors Park which provides a playground and a mini-golf course, as well as attractions for aviation enthusiasts, such as historic aircraft you can step on board and explore.

The airport has also come up with Napcab, cabins that can be hired for a minimal sum of money. They contain a bed, a desk and music to suit your taste.

Mumbai

India’s second-busiest airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, now a gleaming international hub, at its Terminal 2, has a museum named Jaya He. It features an almost 3.2-km long wall along the travellators that contains over 5,000 artworks and artefacts, depicting life and culture from all parts of India. Being the third busiest airport in the world, over 100 airlines fly to more than 150 destinations globally from Dubai International Airport. The airport has many facilities to keep the passengers comfortable and engaged.

For example, Terminal 3 here offers Zen gardens – an area that comprises of a fish pond, lush trees and benches to sit on while listening to the sound of water.

Luxury traveller Over the past three decades Bryan Adams has stamped his name well and truly into music history, selling over 65 million records and achieving number ones in over 40 countries. The Canada-born musician, also an accomplished photographer and a tireless humanitarian, resides primarily in a Thames river-view townhouse in Central London that dates back to the early 18th century. Adams also maintains a stylishlyrefined, partly subterranean Paris pied-àterre in an 18th-century carriage house on the ritzy Île Saint-Louis. But given a choice, Adams would, in his own words, "be happy travelling the world in a luxury caravan”.

At Home In The World

"I admit, with humility, that I have a collection of vacation homes that make it compulsory for me to get out of my home," says Adams, adding, "my choice of an ideal destination combine the elements of serene isolation with modern-day creature comforts like highspeed Wi-Fi, iPod docking stations, airconditioned bedrooms and a good allterrain vehicle to get around."

Small wonder then that his homes across the world, including those in the Caribbean Islands (Mustique in the West Indies, a stone's throw from Barbados) feature luxury cars, private beaches, organic gardens and gorgeously laid

out gardens. Adams is paradoxically, as fond of luxuries as he is of running away from them. As he puts it, he is constantly, "running to and from the world!"

Those are also the features of Adams' favourite destinations in the world. "I love the mountains and valleys they enclose.

The mountains denote solitude for me, and the valleys, life," he says poetically.

Work & Leisure

As an artist who has performed in almost every country in the world, Adams considers himself "lucky to have seen quite a lot!" Speaking of his favourite destinations, the singer says, "Egypt has always been a favourite. The pyramids literally call to me. I have performed with them providing the most majestic backdrop and that remains an experience of a lifetime for me."

Speaking of his connection with Asia, Adams is quick to point out that, "India is like a pilgrimage to me. I always have such soul-stirring experiences there.

I always have a series of concerts in several cities while on tour there and it never seems enough! Time flies by in India but I look for excuses to visit the places I want to. Kerala is fantastic and so is Goa. I want to explore Kashmir and Ladakh and more of Rajasthan."

Adams is the only Western artist to have performed in Pakistan post the 9/11 attack. "I wish Pakistan was more popular.

The natural beauty of the country cannot be compared to anything else. Lush green valleys all around with humongous mountains are a treat to sore eyes. And don't even get me started on the food!

I am in a constant state of food coma in Pakistan!" exclaims Adams.

Another Asian country that is close to Adams' heart is Japan. "I reconciled with my father during one of the concerts in Japan, and it can’t get more magical than that for sure. Japan’s mountain peaks, prettiest flowers and tall skyscrapers are perfect for any kind of vacation, whether you like to shop or just take a nature walk. Not to mention the people there, they are just so welcoming and warm! I can't wait to go to Japan again," he says.

The Philippines’ capital Manila is a labyrinth of great restaurants, karaoke restaurants, malls and nightlife. But in some unsuspecting places, you’ll find a corner for meditative silence that you would never expect.

Arroceros Forest Park

The word ‘forest’ should be your biggest hint for in-city relaxation here. Arroceros Forest Park is in the middle of the city and the definition of an urban escape. Based on the riverside, Arroceros is where your lungs will be re-oxygenated with clean and crisp air as you traipse its 2.2 hectares of lush green grounds. Incidentally, it is known as ‘Manila’s last lung’. Note that it is gated and requires permission to visit – this is accessible from security outside. Be that as it may, it does mean that it’s a more exclusive experience.

The Henry Hotel

Let’s put it this way: The Henry Hotel’s meandering driveway takes you away from heart-thumping noise and to an oasis of calm.

A colonial boutique hotel, its architecture and design provide old school charm with white-washed columns, wood panelling and overgrown trees sheltering you from the outside world. Even if you’re not a guest at the hotel, you can still take some time out to enjoy the grounds whilst sipping a mocktail on their rattan furniture.

Corregidor Island

If you’ve got the time for a full day trip, put Corregidor Island at the top of your list. An island (of castaway proportions) is a sure way to relax and side-step the hustle of the city. Located 48 kms away from Manila, the Corregidor Island is located at the mouth of Manila Bay. During the Japanese invasion in World War II, Corregidor was the headquarters of the Allied Forces. A memorial now sits on the island fortress in remembrance of the courageous Filipino and American men who defended the country. History buffs among you will be able to spend hours here. As far as staying overnight is concerned, there is an inn, but the island is only an hour's ferry ride away so you can easily do a roundtrip in a day and sleep back in the city.

Coco Bango Café

Another leafy, closed-off find, Coco Bango Café is a friendly neighbourhood hangout in the centre of Intramuros, which is a busy area in Manila. As far as their food goes, it’s a safe choice of international cuisine (burgers, wings, country style chicken) and then local delights (ox tail, char-boiled squid, soups and soy-vinegar sauces). Don’t expect grandeur, but do expect to feel the love of the friendly staff and the warmth of a local haunt.

Treskul Records and Café

This one’s for the solo travellers and vinyl enthusiasts. Treskul Records and Café is an old tunes emporium, which is sure to bring about waves of nostalgia: think the Beatles and Nirvana. The location is almost hidden, but if solitude is what you need, you’ll get that in full here – you’ll probably even lose track of time as you sip your cup of beautifully roasted coffee. And if you’ve got space in your suitcase, they have record players and speakers on sale.

Mountains or beaches?

Beaches and mountains are majestic in their own right, but there’s something more captivating to me about the wide-open sea and golden sands.

Wildlife or nightlife?

Nightlife can be fun, especially when it comes to night street photography or hunting for street food evening bazaar’s, but wildlife is a blessing.

What is your favourite destination?

For me, London really captures so many essences of so many cultures, particularly when it comes to food. It is a multicultural melting pot not only brimming with people and cultures, but consisting of global tastes and cuisines too.

in southern Italy. I saw plenty of Europe during that trip, Italy’s cities have a special place in my heart but so does London!

What are the best things about Bahrain, according to you?

The balance between tradition, culture and a truly urban experience makes Bahrain a unique destination. The dining scene has proved itself, and Bahrain is now a destination for food enthusiasts from around the Gulf.

How do you deal with bad travel experiences?

What is on your bucket list?

I’d love to travel to Marrakesh first. After that, I’d love to take in Montenegro, it’s famous for its amazing views as well as its unique cuisine!

My philosophy on negative travel experiences is fairly like my philosophy on negative experiences in general – everything works out as it should in the end. Therefore, I work through negativity by staying optimistic about the future while looking carefully at the solutions available to me.

How do you ensure your travel experience is a pleasant one?

What are your travel essentials?

What advice would you give people regarding travelling?

By always planning, being organised and double-checking the essentials. It never hurts to be careful.

Technology is my biggest travel asset.

We have so many useful tools on our smartphones these days. My top choices are Google Maps, TripAdvisor and Uber.

What quote do you live by?

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”.

Are you into an adventure? If so, what is your most memorable adventure?

Adventuring is in my blood. My favourite adventure abroad has to be my trip to Naples 70
