We’ve recently celebrated one year of the successful launch of our new brand identity and received wonderful feedback about our new fresh, clean and modern look that has proved to be iconic and memorable. We’ve always wanted to keep our celebrated falcon as our icon and retain the gold colour, which represents the luxury and warmth of the Kingdom. The falcon, its bill and feathers inspire many aspects of the font design and cabin definition. We’ve recently released a series of images along with a video showcasing our new uniforms across different landmarks in the Kingdom.

Additionally, to compliment the major focus on sports and to facilitate travel of athletes around our global network, we recently enhanced our baggage allowance for golf players and cyclists to include one golf bag or one bicycle over and above their baggage allowance. Next on your list should be the Málaga Cathedral, situated in the city centre.

Nicknamed “La Manquita”, it took more than 250 years to build this gorgeous church that was constructed between 1528 and 1782. While original plans had allowed for two towers- North and South, due to a lack of funds, only the former was built. Finely crafted in Renaissance and baroque styles, the notable 17th century choir stalls of mahogany and cedar wood were designed by Luis Ortiz.

Follow this with a lively evening at the Mercado Central, one of the most beautiful and lively markets in Spain.

The mix of booths and restaurants here makes it a place you could easily spend hours at. The 260+ stalls here sell everything from sausages, cheese and fish to in-season vegetables, home supplies and more, including misshapen tomatoes, sliced and served with olive oil, chopped garlic and large purple onions that are mild and sweet.

is considered to be one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in the city for its wide range of restaurants. The beach itself is 1.2 km long and is an ideal place to spend a relaxing day and take a refreshing splash in the sea.

After indulging your palate at Mercado and relaxing at the beach, walk it all off with an adventure at Mount Gilbralfaro and the Alcazaba Castle. Built in the 11th century, the castle is a hallmark of Málaga’s past rulers. At the foot of the Alcabaza Castle is the Roman amphitheatre that is estimated to have been constructed in the first century A.D. gulflife.online

Very close to the beach and the castle is Avenida de la Aurora where Cafe Central is one of the oldest historic places to grab a cup of coffee in Málaga; La Canasta next door does well with its cakes and pastries too! A typical spot to sit-back and relax with friends and family on hot summer days. The Avenida is a great place for leisurely coffees and afternoon teas, with a lovely view of people from your terrace table.

Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, is celebrating one year since it officially unveiled its new brand at the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2018. Millions of viewers across the world witnessed the new look and feel of the airline as its first incoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft gave a flypast before the race, showcasing not only the airline’s newest, state-of-the-art aircraft but also the new Gulf Air livery.

The rebranding comes as a part of a broad spectrum of recent, positive developments by Gulf Air, which include fleet modernisation, network expansion, enhanced product offering and a new direction for the airline’s growth. The

change began with the embodiment of the warmth and friendliness that Gulf Air carries, expressing “Smart with a Heart”.

The airline’s key one-year rebrand anniversary milestones include fleet modernisation with Boeing 787 Dreamliners, A320neos, expansion of Gulf Air's network in Asia, Europe and Africa.

The new identity has expressed itself across every touchpoint right from the pre-flight magic at the check-in desks to the interiors of the aircraft and the Gulf Air crew's re-styled uniforms. The Kingdom of Bahrain, known as “The land of two Seas”, was the starting point for the teams when designing Gulf Air’s new uniforms, with the choice of colours, shades of turquoise and aqua as a reference to the archipelago’s natural beauty.

Bahrain’s landscape, where the rich heritage of the past meets modern architecture, infused the design of the new outfits with graphic cuts at the waist and sleek lines for the tailoring.

KEY STEPS Our attempt to touch every point of contact with our passengers and transform their experience of flying began foremost with the addition of new aircraft to our fleet. We took delivery of our first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

in April 2018 and till today we have received 6 Boeing Dreamliners and 2 Airbus 320neos.

Gulf Air’s iconic falcon too underwent transformation. The falcon embodies courage, perseverance and freedom - qualities that we heavily associate ourselves with. Redesigning of the falcon with finer detailing and bolder colours is our attempt to express innovation, quality service and raw beauty that make Gulf Air more than just an airline.

The fusion of heritage and the spirit of modern Bahrain is also expressed in the design of the aircraft interior. The newly modified seats offer more living space to passengers. The lie-flat bed is now wider, longer and more seamlessly deployed, while the entrance to the suite has been reshaped to enhance comfort. The cabin interior colour and material palette is inspired by the fine materials and craftsmanship of Bahrain’s artisans and the traditional sport of falconry.

Rich brown leathers, a distinctive feather pattern and elegant gold accents reinterpret Middle Eastern opulence in a contemporary fashion. The result is a completely updated look and feel that is elegant, sophisticated and quintessentially Bahraini.

Every year Jeddah takes the limelight as the Islamic world gears up to celebrate the Holy month of Ramadan. As Ramadan dawns upon us, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia paints a picture of spiritual transformation and cultural fascination. Jeddah, the Gateway to Mecca Islam's holiest sanctuary - has its own set of traditions that identify with the blessed month.

The soul of Jeddah is Al Balad, it contains alleys of souqs with modern shopping arcades in its vicinity. In Al Balad, what catches the eye are the graceful multi-storied houses of coral stone and plaster, adorned with teak doorways and wooden latticework balconies with Naseef House, now accommodating a cultural centre, being the star of all buildings.

The chief trading port of the Red Sea, Jeddah is an open air museum with more than 300 splendid outdoor sculptures dotting every important road junction. Residents of the city are immensely proud of Jeddah's spectacular Red Sea coast; its Waterfront is peppered at frequent intervals with small amusement play areas, parks, beach cabins, sports arenas, resorts and motels, cafes, fishing areas and a cycling arena. The King Fahd’s Fountain, which spouts water 260 metres above the Red Sea, is a pleasant sight from the Corniche. With its pristine aquatic underwater beauty, diving is a major activity in Jeddah. Notwithstanding many glitzy malls that dot Jeddah's expansive skyline, the place has retained its traditional charm.

Even before Ramadan sets in, Jeddah celebrates Sha’banah, a tradition of the Hijaz region, where families go out on group outings, play games, eat a variety of traditional foods and entertain themselves. This is to mark the end of the month of Shaban, the eighth Islamic month.

Using special decorations for Ramadan is one of the traditions of Arab people and Jeddah is noted for its use of lanterns, known as fanoos, to illuminate homes, during the holy month.

Muslims everywhere make it a point to engage in charity as much as possible and in Jeddah such activities increase manifold during Ramadan. Each year, volunteer groups assemble and organise teams to head out to impoverished areas to donate food and clothing; community fasting tents are prevalent everywhere and piety-writ, large mosques are filled with Muslims attending tarawih prayers.

The food kiosks, commonly known as Bastas, here serve luscious traditional foods, drinks and desserts; popular among them include luqaimat or sweet dumplings, pancake-like qatayef, samosas, mandi, foul (fava beans), custard and various drinks like sobia, tamr hindi, and magneta coloured karkadé. It is especially difficult to resist the Ramadan-speciality Balila, a light dish consisting of boiled chickpeas seasoned with a variety of spices and sauces.

Jeddah's famed waterfront (Corniche) is a favourite place for Iftar. A festive ambience rents the air as families and friends gather at various places facing the Red Sea to break their daily fast.

‫تشتهر منطقة الكورنيش أيضا بنافورة الملك فهد‬ ‫والتي يندفع منها الماء ‪ 260‬مترا فوق سطح البحر‬ ‫األحمر‪ ،‬في مشهد رائ��ع يثير االعجاب‪ .‬يعتبر الغوص‬ ‫في مياه البحر قبالة مدينة جدة من أهم األنشطة في‬ ‫عروس البحر األحمر‪ ،‬التي احتفظت بسماتها التاريخية‬ ‫رغم انتشار المجمعات التجارية الحديثة‪.‬‬ ‫يحرص أهل جدة على االحتفال بما يسمى "الشعبنة"‬ ‫وهي عادة حجازية توارثتها األجيال تعبيرا عن االبتهاج‬ ‫ب��ق��رب ح��ل��ول ش��ه��ر رم��ض��ان ال��م��ب��ارك ون��ه��اي��ة شهر‬ ‫شعبان‪ ،‬الشهر الثامن في التقويم الهجري‪ .‬تتجمع‬ ‫األس��ر واألق���ارب واألص��دق��اء في أواخ��ر شهر شعبان‬ ‫من كل عام ويتبادلون أطراف الحديث ويرفهون عن‬ ‫النفس ويتناولون ما لذ وطاب من شهي الطعام‪ .‬ي ّعبر‬ ‫سكان ع��روس البحر األحمر أيضا عن بهجتم فتراهم‬ ‫يزينون منازلهم بالفوانيس التي تضيء بيوتهم طيلة‬ ‫الشهر الكريم وتملؤها بالنفحات الروحانية الرمضانية‪.‬‬ ‫في شهر رمضان الكريم يكثر المسلمون في مختلف‬ ‫أنحاء العالم من أعمال الخير والصدقات زيادة في األجر‬ ‫والحسنات‪ ،‬وهو ما يتجلى خاصة في مدينة جدة‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫تغمرها األجواء الروحانية في شهر مبارك تكون فيه‬ ‫أعمال الخير مضاعفة األج��ر‪ .‬في شهر رمضان من كل‬ ‫سنة يتوجه المتطوعون الذين نذروا أنفسهم لألعمال‬ ‫الخيرية إلى األحياء الفقيرة للتبرع باألغذية والمالبس‬ ‫وت��ق��دي��م ال��ص��دق��ات‪ .‬تنصب ال��خ��ي��ام ال��ت��ي ت��ق��دم وجبة‬ ‫اإلفطار في كل مكان فيما تغص المساجد بالمصلين‬ ‫الذين يقصدون أماكن العبادة ألداء صالة التراويح‪.‬‬ ‫تعد مدينة جدة التاريخية‪ ،‬أو جدة البلد‪ ،‬الوجهة المفضلة‬ ‫في شهر رمضان‪ ،‬حيث تدب الحركة كل يوم مع اقتراب‬ ‫موعد آذان المغرب وتناول وجبة االفطار‪ .‬تزخر جدة‬ ‫بالبنايات القديمة‪ ،‬والمتاحف‪ ،‬والمساجد وهي تتوزع‬ ‫ما بين حارة المظلوم‪ ،‬حارة الشام‪ ،‬حارة اليمن وحارة‬ ‫البحر وهي تغص بالناس الذين يقصدونها لالستمتاع‬ ‫بأجوائها الرمضانية وتناول وجبة االفطار الرمضاني‪.‬‬

Strokes of inspiration Words: Rabi’ah.M

For a celebrated Bahraini artist Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the 'In Parallel' art exhibition, which recently concluded at the Bait Al Muzna Gallery, was a unique experience.

Omani culture interprets his artistic oeuvre by considering the interconnectedness of the various styles he has used over the decades.

The exhibition was an exciting narrative and presentation of his artwork, which spanned 40 years of his career as an artist.

Sheikh Rashid explains, “I chose this title with the help of Yasmin Sharabi, the curator. At the heart of this art exhibition is an attempt to showcase a selection of my work from different eras of my artistic career. They differ stylistically yet they are inherent of a very similar emotion.”

When you enter the art gallery, you will come across a plethora of Sheikh Rashid’s stunning pieces on display; each has a story to narrate from his initial days as an artist to the present.

Starting with landscape painting during the 1970s and extending to a minimalistic parametric structure, his vast body of work has witnessed a distinct transformation in style through the use of different mediums. For gulflife.online

instance, the matte aluminium installations from 2012 onwards reminisce his desert landscapes from the 1970s. Then there are the mirrored pieces from 2010, which call to mind the reflective, fluidity of water along with the susceptibility of Bahrain’s desert wadis, a natural characteristic of his works from the 1980s.

Even though he has experimented with various materials and developed distinct styles over the years, Shaikh Rashid has managed to successfully explore his heritage and the correlation to his immediate environment during his entire artistic career. When asked about the best advice he was given, he explained: “During the yearly art exhibition of my final year of high school HRH Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa, the Prime Minister of Bahrain, told me that he admired my work and advised me never to give up. Also, he stressed that it was vital to continue painting. He greatly inspired me at such a young age as he is someone who I highly respect and admire.”

No doubt this art exhibition is pure inspiration for many since it touches on tradition, heritage, and culture and promotes the traditional forms of architecture, the natural landscape and Bahrain’s environment.

The blessed month of Ramadan is here. Ramadan is a period where Muslims worldwide abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, and they also spend time in prayer, doing good deeds, reciting the Holy Quran and engaging in other acts that entail great rewards from God.

One of the visible sights that one comes across in this holy month is the liberal use of prayer beads.

Prayer beads are used as a tool through which Muslims perform the thikr, or pronouncements in remembrance of Allah. Though the use of prayer beads, also called masbaha, is not a must but Muslims in order to keep a count of remembrance of Allah use it as an aid. Some also use their fingers when performing thikr and this is highly recommended.

The Masbaha comes in varying styles and decorative qualities. Usually a string is a loop of 99 beads divided into clusters of 33, with a shorter string of 10 beads to keep track of multiples and a tasseled rope to mark the start and end of the 99-bead chain. At times, the masbaha will be smaller, with only 33 beads, or they can be longer, with 99 beads divided into three groups by three beads that are differently shaped than the rest so that they can be identified by touch without being looked at. Some are even 999 beads in length, which eliminates the need for the shorter 10-bead string to track the multiples. The thread that holds the beads together is either made of cotton, silk or simple nylon.

The Masbaha can be simple — with beads made from inexpensive plastic — or they can be decorative and pricey, with beads made from decorative ceramics, hardwoods or precious stones and date pits. Though in the last two decades button-operated metal counters flooded the market as a replacement for the masbaha, yet people prefer the traditional beads.

Pilgrims visiting Mecca and Madina, Islam's two holiest sanctuaries, bring the masbaha as souvenirs and gifts for their relatives and friends when they return to their respective countries.

Shops and street hawkers in and around Haram mosque in Mecca and Prophet's mosque in Madina sell masbahas of varying design and colours and they are quite reasonably priced. They are priced based upon the material of the beads and workmanship. The colourful and exquisite masbahas displayed in these shops are a feast for one's eyes.

‫يتوافد حجاج بيت اهلل الحرام على مكة المكرمة والمدينة‬ ‫المدينة المنورة‪ ،‬أولى القبلتين وثاني الحرمين الشريفين‬ ‫عند المسلمين‪ ،‬تكألهم رعاية المولى جل وعال‪ ،‬قبل أن‬ ‫يعودوا إلى بلدانهم وهم يحملون ما تيسر من الهدايا‬ ‫التذكارية يقدمونها ل�لأق��ارب واألص��دق��اء‪ ،‬وم��ن ضمنها‬ ‫السبح‪ .‬ت��ع��رض المحالت ال��م��وج��ودة ق��رب ال��ح��رم المكي‬ ‫الشريف والمسجد النبوي في المدينة على حجاج بيت‬ ‫اهلل الحرام السبح المختلفة األشكال واألل��وان بأسعار‬ ‫معقولة وكذلك يفعل الباعة المتجولون الذين ينتقلون‬ ‫من مكان إل��ى آخ��ر وه��م يعرضون بضاعتهم على ال��زوار‪.‬‬ ‫تثمن السبح على أساس الخامات التي تصنع منها حبات‬ ‫ال��خ��رز وج��ودت��ه��ا‪ .‬تسترعي السبح انتباه ال���زوار والحجاج‬ ‫بأشكالها المختلفة وألوانها البديعة‪.‬‬

However, between spurts like the Indian Premier League and the upcoming T20 Blast, AB de Villiers is making optimum use of his free time and is spending it judiciously with his family and friends. “I’m definitely in the best place of my life so far,” insists de Villiers, adding, “There’s less pressure when you don’t play international cricket. It’s still there, but less. I am enjoying my cricket more now and to have the ability to take two or three months off when I want to be home, that’s refreshing.”

Love for Travel, Travel for Love

AB is relishing being his own boss and spending time with his wife and toddler sons while exploring business ventures. He is also quite "okay with sharing vacation pictures on social media" and his favourite is the one on Instagram where he and his wife Danielle can be seen “relaxing in the golden glow of the setting sun at the Sun Vacation Club, a posh holiday club in South Africa”. In fact, both AB and his gorgeous wife Danielle and their two sons Abraham and John Richard, enjoy "a love for the outdoors".

Speaking about his love for travel, AB says, “I am lucky to have a family and circle of friends that love travelling as much as I do!” Not one to lag behind, AB's marriage proposal too was one right out of a perfect dream - he asked Danielle to marry him with the symbol of love, Taj Mahal in the backdrop. “India is really one of our favourite destinations. The kind of variety it offers - the grandeur of royal palaces in Rajasthan, the gulflife.online

greenery in Goa and Kerala and the mind boggling variety of food - we can never have enough! Danielle and I absolutely love Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. And we want to travel to Kashmir and Ladakh as well,” quips AB. “The love for travel is common between us, but she is a much better travel planner,” he adds.

The venue for the World Cup, England, & Wales also has a special place in AB's heart. “The weather there is amazing at any time of the year.

Except when rain plays spoilsport,” he says. The Caribbean Islands is another favoured ground for vacations and holidays. “I love spending time in the Caribbean! It is a family dream destination and the vibe is similar to the vibe at home,” he reveals.

By “vibe," he actually means the music. “Danielle and I love checking out the music scene while in the Caribbeans. There will be this strain of some singer or performer in the street and I naturally veer towards that,” laughs the fierce batsman.

Always Africa

He may have travelled the world, but his home continent, Africa, is his favourite. “The amount of nature you can enjoy in Africa is truly unparalleled,” adding, “the wildlife, the topography, the climate and the views are incredible.” Recently, the de Villiers family posted pictures against backdrops of dreamy rainbows and waterfalls. Revealing the location, de Villiers says it is at his favourite spot in Zambia - the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.

Another place he recommends is Cape Town, which according to him, “is best explored on a fast bicycle. That’s what my friends and I do whenever we can. It is great multitasking. My ideal vacation is one that helps me to integrate all of that. So we cycle, canoe, go hiking and what have you!” And what is the next destination on the charts? “I will have to check with Danielle as to what surprises she has up her sleeve!”

“The tigers of some other famous national parks in India like Ranthambore and Bandhavgarh are used to tourists but here, the tigers are quite shy,” says Raghav Rai, our guide. “It’s typical for tourists visiting the park to straightaway ask the guide, 'Will we see tigers?',” says Raghav, adding, “the forests here are much more than tigers”.

The fact is, there is no certainty that you will see a tiger on your safari; you get to spend a limited amount of time in the park, and you do not control which zones you visit.

Where we are

The Jim Corbett National Park was established as India’s first National Park on August 8, 1936. It is home to over 650 bird species, with grasslands and Sal forests fed by the Ramganga river.

Originally christened the Hailey National Park after Sir Malcolm Hailey, it was later renamed the Ramganga National Park, but was finally named in the honour of famous local conservationist Jim Corbett after his death in 1953.

Jim Corbett was an army officer of the Colonel rank in the British-Indian Army and before he turned into a nature conservationist, wildlife lover and a revered author, he was a very famous hunter in India and abroad. Due to his amazing tracking and hunting skills, he was often sought by the then government of the United Province to track and kill the tigers and leopards who posed a threat as man-eaters.

As we reached our destination, Aahana The Corbett Wilderness, I was a little bewildered as to how what is considered one of the most luxurious addresses of Corbett could simply merge with the natural surroundings of the place. Aahana touches the forests of Corbett National Park along its entire length on the north-eastern boundary. The Khara Gate of the Jhirna Range of CTR, which stays open throughout the year, is in its close proximity. That's not all, this place is also a bird lover's paradise - out of the 650 species of birds present in Corbett, more than 130 species are regular visitors.

To the jungle

Next morning, we were all eager to begin the most exciting part of our trip - the jungle safari. In Corbett, there are two safari timings – 5:30 am and 2:30 pm (they change depending on the season and the route). Since it was April, we were asked to be ready by 6 am. We started our journey by driving towards the Dhikala gate. The drives typically last three hours and drivers stick to this schedule strictly. You can either drive in a cantor or a jeep. We travelled through different paths and the deer, elephants, sambhars were easy to spot, but our eyes were peeled for the main game – the tiger.

We drove for a few hours, stopped to smell the plants and paused to take a lot of pictures. We also took a break at the top of the hill to admire the gorgeous view. As we were climbing one of the hills, we saw a leopard, but the guide shared with us that it was a bit of a ‘loner’ and there are others that walk together, so we stopped to look for them and eventually spotted some. Seeing tigers in the wild has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember and our guide too was very concerned about making it happen for us.

We didn’t get to see any tigers on our safari but it was a memorable trip nonetheless.

‫صباح ال��ي��وم ال��ت��ال��ي‪ ،‬كنا متحمسين لالنطالق‬ ‫ف��ي ال��ج��زء األك��ث��ر إث���ارة ف��ي ج��ول��ت��ن��ا ال��رائ��ع��ة‪،‬‬ ‫أعني الخروج في رحلة سفاري‪ .‬تنطلق رحالت‬ ‫السفاري في الحديقة الوطنية جيم كوربيت في‬ ‫الساعة الخامسة والنصف صباحا فيما تبدأ رحلة‬ ‫السفاري الثانية على الساعة الثانية والنصف‬ ‫ظهرا‪ -‬علما وأن توقيت رحالت السفاري يختلف‬ ‫باختالف الفصل وطبيعة المسار‪ .‬وبما أننا في‬ ‫شهر إبريل فقد كان علينا أن نكون على أتم‬ ‫االستعداد في الساعة السادسة صباحا‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫ق��ص��دن��ا م��ن��ذ ال��ب��داي��ة ب��واب��ة ذي��ك��اال‪ .‬تستغرق‬ ‫ال��رح��ل��ة ث�ل�اث س��اع��ات ع��ل��م��ا وأن السائقين‬ ‫يحرصون على التقيد التام بالمواعيد‪ .‬انطلقت‬ ‫بنا السيارة عبر مسالك وثنايا متعددة وقد‬ ‫استمتعنا بمشاهدة الغزالن واألفيال غير أن‬ ‫أعيننا ك��ان ترصد كل مكان عساها تقع على‬ ‫أحد النمور‪.‬‬ ‫أمضينا أربع ساعات في السيارة توقفنا خاللها‬ ‫كي نشم روائ��ح النباتات الزكية ونلتقط الكثير‬ ‫من الصور‪ .‬عندما بلغنا قمة التل أخذنا قسطا‬ ‫من الراحة لالستمتاع بالمناظر الطبيعية الخالبة‪.‬‬ ‫كنا بصدد النزول من أحد التالل عندما وقعت‬ ‫أعيننا على أحد الفهود بين األشجار‪ ،‬ثم ما لبثنا‬ ‫أن رأينا مجموعة أخ��رى‪ .‬كنا نأمل منذ البداية‬ ‫أن نعيش هذه المغامرة المثيرة ونصادف في‬ ‫طريقنا النمور كما أن المرشد السياحي الذي‬ ‫ك��ان يرافقنا ك��ان أيضا حريصا على تمكيننا من‬ ‫رؤية هذا النوع من الحيوانات‪ .‬لم يحالفنا الحظ‬ ‫ي��وم��ه��ا ألن��ن��ا ل��م ن��ش��اه��د أي ن��م��ر غ��ي��ر أن تلك‬ ‫المغامرة ظلت راسخة في ذاكرتنا‪.‬‬

Bahrain

May Mahmoud and Tariq Mahmoud acquired a penchant for combining flavours from their childhood experiences at Tariq Pastries. In 2015, they launched Bare Chocolate to use food, especially premium chocolate, as a catalyst to bridge the gap between cultures. They talk to Gulf Life Words: Abhishek Chakraborty

Tell us a little bit about yourself and Bare Chocolate.

Tariq: My sister May (who is a trained pastry chef) and I launched Bare Chocolate in 2015, with the founding principles that our chocolate be organic, GMO free and FairTrade certified.

All bars are produced in Switzerland and we currently have 12 flavours. Currently, you can find Bare chocolates in over 100 supermarkets in Bahrain. The company was born out of a simple idea: To create a selection of chocolate bars featuring local flavours made with a combination of all-natural ingredients and the classic techniques of Swiss chocolatiers.

What is the most difficult part of vegan chocolate making process and why?

Tariq: Making vegan chocolate in and of itself is not difficult for us, because Bare Chocolate doesn’t contain any emulsifiers, stabilisers, or flavour enhancers to begin with. That’s where the risk lies.

How long have you been working with chocolate?

May: We’ve been developing a knowledge of chocolate since childhood.

May: When most people think of a vegan diet, they assume chocolate is the first thing to go, which isn’t necessarily the case. Vegan chocolates basically use cacao butter as an alternative for dairy. The challenge is to come up with the right balance and combination of ingredients and flavours.

What's the flavour profile of the chocolate you use as a base?

Favourite food/drink to pair with your chocolate?

May: When it comes to flavour profiles, dark chocolate is our favourite by far. At Bare, our premium dark chocolate comes with a high percentage of cacao, which contains a multitude of vitamins as well as calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron.

How do you come up with flavour combinations for your sweets? Where does your inspiration come from?

May: We initially launched with a small selection of flavours that would appeal to diverse consumers. They included dark chocolate infused with organic orange, candied ginger, lemon and black pepper. We are constantly experimenting with new flavours, especially

May: Strawberries, oranges and blueberries work well with white chocolate. It also pairs well with Matcha tea or Colombian coffee. Dark chocolate works well with sweet or tangy foods and spicier flavours like ginger, wasabi and jalapeno peppers. It also pairs wonderfully with figs, grapes, goat cheese, Parmesan and aged gouda. It also combines well with teas such as Earl Grey and Assam Tea.

If you had to take one of your chocolates to a desert island with you, which one would you choose?

Tariq: I would choose our unique Lemon Pepper and Ginger chocolate. It’s a dark chocolate, and my favourite.

What is your USP? Our USP is our ingredients. We use only organic ingredients and deal only with Fair Trade approved suppliers. All our chocolates have cocoa as the main ingredient and the sugar we use is organic raw cane sugar or from pressed cane juice.
