Last month’s 2018 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix had a standout moment as Gulf Air’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fly pass showcased our newest, state-of-the-art aircraft and new livery. Gulf Air’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will serve our double daily London Heathrow service, with increased capacity and superior on-board products and services, from June 15, 2018.

Bangalore’s gentle climate, greenery, public parks and broad streets have earned it the nickname of ‘The Garden City of India.’ The Lalbagh Botanical Garden and Cubbon Park are aesthetically covered with beautiful lawns, flowerbeds, lotus ponds and fountains. But over the years, the green-belts have given way to make room for a concrete jungle.

Fortunately, artists are taking the initiative to regain some of the city’s lost colours.

They have used the city as a canvas for their amazing works of art. The signature of artists who took to the streets of Bangalore, like Baadal Nanjundaswamy, Sunnal Lingade and street art foundation, St+Art India, have left an indelible mark on Bangalore.

St+Art India Foundation

Rooted in social activism and urban designs, the St+Art Festival swears by the motto of ‘Art for Everyone.’ Bangalore welcomed the St+Art India Foundation in October 2016. The brushes of 15 Indian and international artists completely transformed the oh-so-regular pathways and streets of the city.

As you enter the heart of the city, you will find the three-storey high mural at the MG Road Metro Station towering over you. It features five playful children who fill the area with innocence and positivity. Close by, you can see the images of snails on the Infantry Road. As you continue to explore the city, your attention will definitely be captured by the unapologetic burst of colours, which form the Naavu Idhevi – ‘We Exist’ – mural near the Dhanvantri Road.

Right in the middle of the chaotic KR Market, filled with hundreds and thousands of flowers, lies the inspiration for Shilo Shiv Suleman’s magnificent mural, giving a creative twist to the famous flower market of Bangalore.

A city, which is home to the famous Indian Cartoon Gallery, would have been incomplete without the ‘Appupen’s totem’ within the compound of Majestic Metro Station. This riot of colours represents the guardian spirit of the city and creates a timeline of Bangalore’s history and folk tales.

Shot to fame

Two other artists who call the city their home are Shunnal Ligade and Badal Nanjundaswamy. Neither believe in confining themselves to the walls of traditional art galleries. Ligade has decorated walls of many restaurants and lounges with dreamy murals.

His artworks adorns the walls of The Hideout restaurant in BMT Layout, Green Theory Cafe in Convent Road and Barebones Cafe in Indira Nagar amongst others.

Famous for his trademark pothole art, Nanjundaswamy’s work can be seen in craters, manholes, uneven road dividers and littered streets across Bangalore.

His works include a life-size crocodile installation in a pothole on the roads in Sultanpalya and the transformation of a waterlogged road in the Cubbon Park Junction area into a pond.

These brilliant artists who have taken art off the page and on to the streets of Bangalore, continue to make a statement, showcase their talent, and most importantly, fill the lives of the citizens with a little colour.

Gulf Air traces its origins to Gulf Aviation Company, which was established in the Kingdom of Bahrain by young British aviator Freddy Bosworth. Bosworth generated interest in the concept of flying via his seven-seater Anson Mark II. Gulf Aviation Company was registered as a private shareholding enterprise in 1950 with a modest capital of Rs 335,000 (about 1943 BHD as of today).

Shortly thereafter, British Overseas Airways Corp (BOAC) became a partner in the company. The decade saw the introduction of de Havilland aircraft in

1951, the Doce in 1954 and the Heron in 1956. Services were launched to airports of Bahrain, Dhahran, Doha, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Kuwait.

1960s: Gaining ground

Two DC3 aircraft were added to the fleet in 1960, while two Dove aircraft were retired from service. VC10 aircraft were introduced in 1961 and were operated to and from Bahrain to Kuwait, Doha and Sharjah. The following year witnessed the inclusion of the third VC10 aircraft and acquisition of two more DC3. Gulf Hotel,

the first five-star property in Bahrain in which the Gulf Aviation Company had 50% equity participation, was inaugurated in 1969. During the decade, services to Karachi and Salalah were launched.

1970s: Flies to London

The acquisition of a BAC 10-11 enabled the company to enter the jet age and services to London commenced. The governments of Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Oman and Qatar purchased BOAC's shares in 1973. With the foundation treaty of January 1, 1974, Gulf Aviation Company became Gulf Air, the national carrier of four countries. Eleven Tristars and nine B737s joined the fleet in 1976.

Amman, Amsterdam, Athens, Baghdad, Bangkok, Beirut, Colombo, Delhi, Dhaka, Hong Kong, Jeddah, Khartoum, Larnaca, Manila, Paris, Ras Al Khaimah, Riyadh and Sanaa were added to the network.

1980s: A member of IATA

This decade began with a boom as Gulf Air became a member of IATA in 1981.

By 1985, Gulf Air's staff strength moved up to 4,500, comprising 41 nationalities speaking 23 languages. The three class cabin configuration – First, Business and Economy – on long haul flights was launched in the same year. The Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Company (Gamco) opened in Abu Dhabi in 1987. The first Boeing 767 joined the fleet in 1988.

Flights to Frankfurt, Istanbul, Damascus, Dar Es Salam, Fujairah and Nairobi were launched.

1990s: All smiles

The beginning of the decade saw Gulf Air introducing Balenciaga-designed uniform and launching Falcon Reservations

System. A new five-year USD 3 billion investment programme was initiated to improve services. In 1992, the new headquarters of Gulf Air was inaugurated in Bahrain. The flight Simulator Centre was opened in Qatar in 1993. In 1994, the state-of-the-art Airbus A340-300 joined the fleet. Gulf Air was the first Middle East airline to operate the A340 aircraft.

In 1995, Gulf Air carried over 5 million passengers for the first time in its history.

2000: Golden jubilee celebration

As Gulf Air celebrated its golden jubilee, it introduced new uniforms in gray, blue and peach. As part of the 50-year celebration, Gulf Air hired two vintage aircraft – an Avro Anson and a de Havilland Dove – to recreate the company's first flights. In

November 2002, the Bahraini-flag carrier rolled out a new first class service - the "Restaurant in the Sky" concept in flights to London, Paris and Frankfurt featuring chefs from elite European restaurants.

2010: New Era Begins...

As Gulf Air enters a new phase of development, it has announced a 360-degree strategic review to bring the Gulf island kingdom more business and tourism. The airline is due to take delivery of 39 new aircraft, with the start of 787-9 deliveries. In 2018, 5 787-9’s and a pair of A320neo’s will begin the fleet renewal.

The Bahraini flag carrier is also expanding its existing network in India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and starting new flights to Baku in Azerbaijan and Casablanca in Morocco.

This is just the beginning.

‫دشنت طيران الخليج عقد الثمانينيات باالنضمام‬ ‫إل��ى االت��ح��اد ال��دول��ي للنقل الجوي"إياتا" في سنة‬ ‫‪ .1981‬م��ع ح��ل��ول س��ن��ة ‪ ،1985‬ت��ط��ورت الشركة‬ ‫وت��ع��ززت مكانتها ح��ت��ى أص��ب��ح��ت تشغل ‪4500‬‬ ‫م��وظ��ف��ا م��ن ‪ 41‬جنسية‪ ،‬ي��ت��ح��دث��ون ‪ 23‬ل��غ��ة‪ .‬في‬ ‫نفس تلك السنة طورت الناقلة الوطنية خدماتها‬ ‫المتميزة بإطالق تصميم كبينة الركاب التي تضم‬ ‫ال���درج���ة األول�����ى‪ ،‬درج����ة رج����ال األع���م���ال وال��درج��ة‬ ‫السياحية أو االقتصادية في الرحالت الطويلة‪ .‬في‬ ‫ع��ام ‪ ،1987‬تأسست في أب��و ظبي شركة الخليج‬ ‫لصيانة الطائرات (جامكو)‪ .‬انضمت في عام ‪1988‬‬ ‫أول طائرة بوينغ ‪ 767‬إل��ى أسطول الشركة مما‬ ‫ع��زز شبكة رحالتها إل��ى فرانكفورت واسطنبول‬ ‫ودمشق ودار السالم ‪ ،‬كما أطلقت الرحالت على‬ ‫خطي الفجيرة ونيروبي‪.‬‬

‫انضمت طائرتان من نوع دي سي ‪ 3‬إلى أسطول الشركة سنة‬ ‫‪ 1960‬فيما خرجت طائرتان من نوع دوف من الخدمة رسميا‪.‬‬ ‫ف��ي سنة ‪ ،1961‬انضمت ط��ائ��رات ج��دي��دة م��ن ن��وع ‪ VC10‬إلى‬ ‫أسطول الشركة وقد استخدمت في رحالت تربط ما بين البحرين‬ ‫والكويت والدوحة والشارقة‪ .‬شهدت سنة ‪ 1969‬افتتاح فندق‬ ‫الخليج‪ ،‬ليكون أول فندق من فئة ‪ 5‬نجوم في مملكة البحرين‪،‬‬

Superman loves London Henry Cavill, a.k.a Superman has been sighted on more occasions than one in London. "London is history and the future in one place. I love the city and its vibe," declares the good looking British actor, who was born in Jersey Island. Talking about his place of birth, Cavill admits that wherever Superman may take him, the island will always be home to him.

"Quite simply I love that it’s home. Jersey holds a special magic for me, it’s the smell of the sea when I get off the plane or the cry of the gulls or a field of Jersey cows or its incredible history. The place holds such a special place in my heart that it’s hard to say what it is exactly that I love about it. When describing it to people, I tell them that it’s a very small island with a lot of character and some of the most beautiful beaches in Britain," he says.

Predictably, it is his love for the rugged and the classic that draws the 'man of steel' to London.

Ideal for Walks

"I love walking around Hyde Park with Kal, who is more famous in these parts than I am," jokes Cavill, as he talks about his pet dog. "The fragrance of the greenery right at the beginning of autumn and in the peak of spring is just indescribable. It can only be felt," adds Cavill.

Though Henry Cavill has found worldly fame through a character who is, very literally, out of this world—of course, he’s best known as the last son of Krypton in director Zack Snyder’s 2013 franchise reboot, Man of Steel, and its follow-up, the megahit Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — he works pretty hard to keep his real-life self firmly grounded here on Earth.

In fact, the English superstar has shunned the trappings of a full-time Hollywood lifestyle for a

quieter, more friends-and-family-centric life in London. “If I ever become an egomaniac, then I’ve messed it up," he says, adding, "I go for long walks in London. I still walk into bookstores and cafes. Yes, I am recognised, but it is still quiet, and comfortingly so."

Classic & Heritage

London? And quiet? "Of course!" insists Cavill, adding, "Try my favourite spot, the Mark’s Club. It is an elegant and traditional private members’ club situated in a townhouse in Mayfair. The décor is a mix of old and new after it was revamped by Paris-based designer Tino Zervudachi in 2015. You’ll find English antique furniture in the drawing room and paisley-print carpets in the Indian Room. Basically it has a very warm and classic vibe."

Mark's Club may not be as flashy as Superman, but it is this understated elegance that seems to resonate in Henry Cavill's attraction to London. Like the little-known fact that Cavill did time in a London nightclub in order to pay for flights to attend auditions in LA. When he was up for the first Superman film, he remembers that every night at Liquid, "when they opened the dance floor section, the DJ always played the Superman music".

And when it fell through? "Yeah. He stopped playing it after that."

So when in London, it is possible to find Cavill strolling the streets of the capital – he has a house in Kensington.

But you’re most likely to spot him in Cut, Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant in the 45 Park Lane hotel. “It’s my favourite steakhouse,” adds Cavill.

I sit in the eye of the storm, waiting. Spirals of dust dance through the streets, the only visible traces of movement left behind. My patience wearing thin, I close my eyes and begin to fantasise about the taste of couscous accompanied with mint tea. A young boy bolts through the haze, waking me sharply from my dream. He runs towards the market, missing a key ingredient for tonight’s iftar.

Finally, the athan echoes in the air, vibrating across the rooftops, electrifying the souq back into life. Families and children pour through the alleyways, overrunning the medina with excitement on the way to the mosque.

With these long, hot afternoons spent awaiting nighttime festivities, and the rhythm of the day turned upside down, it is unmistakably Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is known as the Holy Month. Muslims must observe sawm, which entails fasting from dawn until dusk. It is a time for prayer, reflection, atonement and charity, where rewards for good deeds are multiplied.

It was my first time fasting, and as I travelled from the mountains to the deserts of Morocco, I was determined to seek out the true spirit of Ramadan.

From the taxi drivers who shared iftar from the boot of their car, to the Amazigh Bedouins who prepared mint tea over an open fire, I was blessed to enjoy the hospitality that epitomises Ramadan.

Travelling during Ramadan offers an unrivalled opportunity to explore the ancient medinas such as Marrakech, Fes and Casablanca, without the usual bustling tourist crowds. Marrakech’s Koutoubia Mosque, which proudly overlooks Africa’s largest square, Jamaa el Fna, is an unmissable stop on any visitor’s list. The best time to visit is at Isha’a , the

evening prayer, when devotees congregate to pray, spilling outside onto the streets in their hundreds.

Perhaps the most breath-taking attraction, however, is the newly built Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, the largest in Morocco. It sits on the city’s coast and boasts of the world’s tallest minaret. During Ramadan hundreds of thousands of worshippers flock here for Tarawih, the night-time prayers, when the mosque’s retractable roof is opened to welcome the stars. Believers recite one thirtieth of the Qur’an every night during Tarawih, so that a whole recitation will be complete by the end of the month.

After sunset, the real adventure begins, when the fasting is replaced with festivities and feasts. A trip to Morocco would

not be complete without tasting their traditional handmade Ramadan sweets shubakiya, made from flour, sesame, orange blossom and sugar. Rahma, an engineering student from Marrakech, reminded me of the reason and meaning behind the Ramadan fast, “Allah asks us to fast so we can feel the importance of what we take for granted, to feel the hunger of the poor and encourage us to live with gratitude and empathy.”

As Eid al-Fitr, the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan, began, I reflected on her words. It was undeniable that I had never before been so grateful for the food I was blessed with that breakfast, and for all the lessons I had learnt from my hosts across the diverse and spellbinding Kingdom of Morocco.

‫كنت أجلس في قلب العاصفة‪ ،‬أنتظر اللحظة الحاسمة‪ .‬كانت الطرقات واألنهج خالية إال من أعمدة‬ ‫الغبار التي تتراقص قبل أن تتالشى‪ .‬لقد عيل صبري ومللت االنتظار‪ .‬أغلقت عيني وأطبقت جفني‬ ‫وبدأت أحلم بطبق من أكلة الكسكسي الشهية وفنجان الشاي بالنعناع‪ .‬بقيت على تلك الحال‬ ‫حتى أبصرت طفال ينطلق في سرعة البرق‪ ،‬ال يلوي على شيء قاصدا السوق في اللحظات األخيرة‬ ‫الشتراء أحد لوازم إفطار اليوم الرمضاني‪ .‬ساد بعدها الصمت وخيم الهدوء على المكان‪ .‬طال بي‬ ‫االنتظار ورحت أمسح بيدي على فمي وقد اشتد بي الضمأ ولم أعد أقوى على الصبر‪.‬‬ ‫أخيرا يرتفع صوت اآلذان عند غروب الشمس فيتردد صداه في كل بيت إيذانا بنهاية يوم آخر من الصيام‪ .‬بعد اإلفطار‬ ‫تدب الحياة في األسواق وتتدفق العائالت واألطفال في الطرقات والثنايا فتراهم يغمرون المدينة بهجة وهم في‬ ‫طريقهم إلى المسجد‪ .‬بعد يوم كامل من الصيام‪ ،‬تغرب الشمس فيرخي الليل ستاره وتمتلئ المدينة بنسمات‬ ‫رمضانية روحانية‪.‬‬ ‫شهر‪َ ‬ر َمضان‪ ‬هو الشهر التاسع في‪ ‬التقويم الهجري وقد فرضت فيه شعيرة الصيام على المسلمين وهو الركن الرابع من‬ ‫أركان اإلسالم الخمسة‪ .‬يمتنع الصائم عن تناول الطّعام والشراب من طلوع الفجر حتّى غروب الشمس مع الن ّية‪ .‬رمضان‬ ‫شهر الصيام والقيام والدعاء والتسابق في فعل الخيرات‪ ،‬تتضاعف فيه الحسنات وتغفر الذنوب‪ .‬كنت في أول أيام‬ ‫شهر الصيام وقد كنت في طريقي من جبال المغرب إلى الصحراء وكلي عزم على االستمتاع باألجواء الرمضانية‪.‬‬ ‫يهل هالل رمضان من كل سنة فترى الناس يتسابقون في إحياء شعيرة الصوم وفعل الخير والعطاء في أجواء روحانية‬ ‫تتجلى في سائقي سيارات األجرة – التاكسي – وهم يتقاسمون وجبة اإلفطار أو في البدو األمازيغ وهم يوقدون النار‬ ‫ويطبخون الشاي‪.‬‬

It is true that some of Pakistan’s mostpreserved archaeological artefacts are situated in the most neglected of places.

On the outskirts of Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, lies the Chaukhandi tombs — a treasure trove for archaeologists and historians alike.

buried there. The site predominantly contains tombs that were built for the Jokhio and Baloch tribes between the 15th and the 18th century.

Unique designs

Buried south to north, these tombs are constructed out of huge sandstone slabs, which are delicately stacked into a finessed pyramid shape. The slabs were then carved with intricate patterns, drawings and relatable scenes.

Located near the N-5 National Highway, just about 30 kms from the main Karachi city, the road leading to the tombs is dusty and crowded.

However, the area surrounding the tombs has changed significantly with tea stalls and other local shops opening up in recent times.

“The Kalamtis were prosperous and powerful people. For the people of the Kalamti tribe, being buried here was an honour. Even though similar graves were found in other areas, Chaukhandi had a special significance to the people,” says Hameed Jamal, a local.

Local take

The locals living in the area have their own story to share when it comes to the tombs, with many believing that a lot of gold has been buried in the graves along with the occupants. “The graves belong to the rich and privileged. So miscreants believe that a lot of gold is also buried here,” says Bilawal Khan, a local tea seller.

Chaukhandi is also supposed to be a haunted cemetery at night. The rumour has it that after sunset, the graves begin to burn up and turn scalding hot. This is accompanied by apparitions, strange voices and screams.

‫تهتم باكستان بالحفاظ على كنوزها األث��ري��ة رغم‬ ‫أن بعضها يوجد في أكثر األم��اك��ن التي تعاني من‬ ‫اإلهمال‪ .‬تعتبر كراتشي أكبر مدينة في باكستان‪.‬‬ ‫على تخوم ه��ذه المدينة توجد مقبرة شاوكهندي‪،‬‬ ‫وه��ي بمثابة كنز حقيقي لعلماء اآلث��ار والمؤرخين‬ ‫ن��ظ��را لقيمتها الكبيرة‪ .‬ت��وج��د ه��ذه القبور مطمورة‬ ‫في األرض من الجنوب باتجاه الشمال وقد شيدت‬ ‫باستخدام أل��واح ضخمة من الحجارة الرملية‪ ،‬المثبتة‬ ‫على شكل هرمي‪ .‬ت��زدان هذه األل��واح الصخرية أيضا‬ ‫بالنقوش واألشكال المتناسقة والمختلفة‪ ،‬إضافة‬ ‫إلى الرسوم والمشاهد التي تروي قصة معينة‪.‬‬

Bahrain’s varied and rich culinary culture is influenced by Indian, Lebanese, Persian, Sri Lankan and Palestinian foods. It also offers a great mix of vegetarian and nonvegetarian options. At the heart of the food is the typical Bahraini Spice Mix and Black Lemon (it is actually jet black), a souring agent. The gamut of savoury food ranges from the typical Gulf delights like Biryani, Harees, Mahyawa, Maglooba, Qouzi and Machboos to popular sweet dishes, including Khabeesa and Zalabia, not forgetting its traditional Arabic coffee known as Qahwah. In fact with its huge number of date palms, Bahrain also has the moniker ‘Land of a Million Date Palms.’

When you are here, you must try the Machboos, a fragrant rice that is cooked with different meat, similar to biryani. A favourite with locals, it is made using fish, chicken or lamb infused with spices like black lemon, saffron, black pepper and cardamom, this is considered the national dish of Bahrain.

A variant made on special occasions is Qouzi, stuffed lamb with rice nuts, raisins

and eggs. Since meat is a favourite, the Nashef is a stew made with chicken or lamb and potatoes in a tomato gravy.

Khubus (a special soft, pillowy bread) is baked fresh in a fire oven and is considered a staple in all meals. It is often enjoyed in the variant of khubus mahyawa (fish sauce) and khubus jibn (cheese bread). In fact, the locals also eat a lot of grilled food that team wonderfully with Khubus.

The fact that Bahrain has fresh water wells in its sea guarantees the best sea food. Don’t miss out on the local hamour! Crayfish, crab, prawns, lobster, tuna, safi and mackerel are other must have sea food options.

For dessert, the local halwa made with corn syrup, honey, saffron and nuts is a must try. Luqaimat or sweet dumplings made with fried dough in a rich saffron and cardamom-based sugar syrup is usually served with the Arabic coffee, Qahwah. If you love food, Bahraini cuisine will take you on a sensory overdrive – try it and you will know.

Going green Words: Trudie Carter

Until recently, Milan – the secondbiggest city and the commercial capital of Italy – was hailed as ‘grey’ and dull.

However, thanks to the creativity of some designers and architects, the city is reinventing itself to include more ‘greens’ like plant-covered buildings, rooftop gardens and innovative parks.

New look for an old city

Much of this new look can be experienced in the Isola (Island) district. The area has a high percentage of offices, a vibrant nightlife, a great number of quality artisan enterprises and cultural associations, besides a mixed residential urban fabric comprising different ethnic and social components. However, the highlight of the renovation is the new expansion of the Garibaldi-Repubblica area that includes a vast scheme of green spaces and pedestrian areas.

Vertical forests

The nearby Porta Nuova district is where the focus of greening Milan can be seen.

Take for instance the Bosco Verticale or Vertical Forest towers. Designed by Boeri Studio and officially opened in 2014, the twin towers reach heights of up to 110 metres and 76 metres, respectively, and host 900 trees (each measuring three, six or nine metres) and over 2,000 plants from a wide range of shrubs and floral plants distributed in relation to the facade’s position towards the sun.

On flat land, each vertical forest equals, in terms of trees, an area of 7,000 sq.m of forest. The vegetal system of the vertical forest aids in the construction of a microclimate, produces humidity, absorbs CO2 and dust particles and produces O2.

Also, the living facade means the exterior is constantly evolving, changing colours with the seasons and offering residents an ever-changing view of the cityscape.

The trees library

Milan’s third largest green lung is the Biblioteca degli Alberi (Trees Library).

Covering an area of 95,000 sq m, circular forests will be scattered all over the site, eventually growing into spectacular natural rooms of different coloured foliage. As per Petra Blaise, the Dutch designer behind the project, these forests represent ‘vegetal pavillions’.

When the project gets completed, the area will become Milan’s largest pedestrian region.

Open-air pharmacy

Elsewhere in Milan, a group of architects and engineers have turned the rooftop of their studio into a beautiful garden in the elegant Brera district. As part of the project called Orto fra I Cortili, the roof of the building has been converted into a permanent vegetable garden and an “open air pharmacy,” redeveloping the building also from an energy and functional perspective.
