Welcome on board. On behalf of the entire Gulf Air family, thank you for flying with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s national carrier today. This month marks the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan and, in light of this blessed occasion, we wish all our valued passengers that are observing this Holy Month of Ramadan, Ramadan Kareem.

Hot on the heels of our much anticipated return to Dhaka, Bangladesh – with five weekly flights – this summer is heating up as, in anticipation of the upcoming peak summer travel period, we are delighted to launch our 2016 summer schedule.

Gulf Air’s 2016 summer schedule will see frequency increases to and from all of Queen Alia International Airport, Amman, Beirut– Rafic Hariri International Airport and Istanbul Atatürk Airport. Gulf Air’s double daily Amman service and daily Beirut service will both increase to multiple daily with an increase of three weekly flights to each city while the airline’s five weekly Istanbul service will increase to daily – all from July until end of August, in anticipation of growing passenger demand. These increased frequencies are designed to offer you greater flexibility and travel options as you plan your holidays.

Saudi Arabia Muslims in Saudi Arabia congregate in Mecca in the holiest month to make their daily five prayers, break their fast and then return to the mosque to recite the Quran all night long. There is much reading of Quran in the place it was first revealed to Prophet Mohammed.

Food: The fast is broken at home with family and friends and the Iftar traditionally begins with a soup followed by samboosa (fried meat pie).

Bahrain An evening gathering called Ghabga is very popular and lasts till late night.

On Girga'on (14th night of Ramadan) children go from door to door singing good wishes to neighbours and collecting candy, nuts and sometimes money from each home. People also dress up in a 'fraisa' (a festive looking horse) with drums and/or flutes and actually do a little act for each house they visit.

Food: In Bahrain, the fast is broken with dates and water, followed by soup, salad and the main course.

UAE In the UAE, cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi are illuminated with crescent moons and shopping malls are flooded with displays of Ramadan couture.

Turkey A typical Turkish custom is the use of drum rolls before the dawn prayers where drummer boys go around waking people up for Suhoor. Once the prayer call for breaking the fast is said, the minarets on the mosques flash a green light. This is a signal to indicate that it is time to end the fast. In the evenings, festive mood prevails on the streets.

Food: In Turkey, people generally eat freshly baked pide, meze, soups, kebabs, pilav and borek.

Egypt The Fanous or lighting of the lanterns is one of the most captivating of the Ramadan traditions. Children go out into the streets with their beautiful and brightly coloured lanterns.

Indian subcontinent In the Indian subcontinent, during Ramadan, food and family gatherings seems to be most important; friends and family come together and spare their time for eating.

But what attracts tourists from across the world to this city on the southern coast of Cyprus is its variety in terms of offerings for sea-diving enthusiasts.

More so when it's the month of June.

While Cyprus’ seashore is perfect for water sports, the excitement continues deep down with some awesome treasures for undersea seekers. Here are a few unusual and surprising diving sites worth checking out in Larnaca.

ADVENTURE

Zenobia is one of the most recreational shipwreck sites in the world Zenobia Dive into a magical underwater world in Larnaca and explore one of the most recreational shipwreck sites in the world – Zenobia. Just 1.4km off the coast of Larnaca, this is rated one of the 10 best wreck dives in the world. The Zenobia, a Swedish ferry carrying 108 articulated lorries, sank in 1980. It lies on its port side on a flat bed of sand and rocks. Both the ferry and its cargo are still intact and fascinating to explore.

The wreck is also home to schools of fish, including grouper, barracuda and tuna.

HMS Cricket Situated off Larnaca, this dive is an opportunity to explore an old British battleship that rests upside down on the seabed at 27m. The World War II gunboat survived the war. It was then anchored in Larnaca Bay and used as target practice by the RAF but sank in 1947 due to bad weather. There is a sandy dip under the wreck. Divers can swim inside the hull through escape hatches and underneath the wreck.

British helicopter wreck This dive is an opportunity to dive on a British Army helicopter that sank to 16m below sea level in 1996. The area is frequented by schools of fish and octopus.

Other attractions Located 200m from the Zenobia wreck is Alexandra wreck, it features schools of fish including grouper, barracuda, kingfish, jacks and trigger fish, as well as moray eels, stingrays, turtles and octopus. The Alexandra was a wooden Egyptian fishing vessel that sank in 2006. Also, visit the Octopus Reef, so called because of the sighting of a large number of octopuses just 10m under sea.

This site is also known for its eagle ray and large turtle sightings.

‫تمتع بالغوص في العالم السحري تحت الماء في الرنكا‬ ‫واستكشف حطام سفينة "زنوبيا" التي تُعد إحدى مواقع حطام‬ ‫السفن الغارقة األكثر ترفيها في العالم‪ ،‬وتقع "زنوبيا" على‬ ‫بعد ‪ 1.4‬كلم قبالة ساحل الرنكا وتعد واحداً من أفضل عشرة‬ ‫مواقع الغوص الخاصة بحطام السفن الغارقة في العالم‪.‬‬ ‫وغرقت سفينة "زنوبيا" السويدية في عام ‪1980‬م حاملة على‬ ‫متنها ‪ 108‬حاويات الشجن‪ ،‬ويرقد حطام السفينة وحمولتها‬ ‫على جانب المرفأ على سرير مسطح من الرمال والصخور‪،‬‬ ‫ومازالت حطام السفينة على حالها وهي رائعة لالستكشاف‪،‬‬ ‫وكذلك أصبح حطام السفينة موطنا لتربية األسماك بما في ذلك‬ ‫الهامور والبراكودا وسمك التونة‪.‬‬

‫يقع موقع حطام سفينة "اتش ام اس كركيت" قبالة ساحل‬ ‫الرنكا‪ ،‬ويوفر الغوص في حطام السفينة فرصة الستكشاف‬ ‫سفينة حربية بريطانية قديمة التي هي ُملقاة رأسا على عقب‬ ‫في قاع البحر تحت عمق ‪ 27‬مترا‪ ،‬ورس��ت هذه السفينة‬ ‫البريطانية بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية في خليج الرنكا وتم‬ ‫استخدامها ك��أداة تدريب على الرماية من قبل سالح الجو‬ ‫الملكي البريطاني ولكنها غرقت في عام ‪1947‬م بسبب سوء‬ ‫األحوال الجوية‪ .‬يمكن للغواصين السباحة داخل هيكل السفينة‬ ‫من خالل منافذ الخروج ومن تحت الحطام‪.‬‬

‫حطام المروحية البريطانية‬

‫يقع موقع حطام المروحية البريطانية قبالة ساحل مدينة‬ ‫الرنكا‪ ،‬ويوفر الغوص في هذا الموقع فرصة الستكشاف‬ ‫حطام مروحية الجيش البريطاني التي غرقت في عمق ‪16‬‬ ‫مترا تحت سطح البحر في عام ‪1996‬م‪ ،‬وفي هذا الموقع توجد‬ ‫بوفرة مدارس تربية األسماك واألخطبوط‪.‬‬

‫مواقع أخرى سياحية جاذبة‬

‫على بعد ‪ 200‬متر من حطام سفينة زنوبيا يقع حطام الكسندرا‬ ‫الذي يضم كوكبة من األسماك بما في ذلك الهامور والبراكودا‬ ‫والكنعد وتريجر‪ ،‬وكذلك االنقليس م��وراي وال��راي اللساع‬ ‫والسالحف واألخطبوط‪ .‬وكانت الكسندرا سفينة صيد مصرية‬ ‫خشبية غرقت في عام ‪2006‬م‪ ،‬ويمكنكم زيارة "األخطبوط‬ ‫ريف" أيضا‪ ،‬ويُسمى ذلك بسبب وجود الكثير من األخطبوطات‬ ‫على بعد ‪ 10‬مترات تحت سطح البحر‪ .‬وهذا الموقع معروف‬ ‫أيضا ألجل "الشعاع النسري" ووجود سالحف كبيرة‪.‬‬

If you want to take lessons in Philippine history, Ayala Museum is the place. They host artifacts and paintings by Philippine art pioneers like Fernando Amorsolo and Juan Luna. BONG’S LUCKY CHARM We take you on a trip to the homeland of Bangladesh’s famous Shakha Pola bangles Words By: Reema Islam

Twinkling bells of the cycle rickshaws, grinding noise of the large stone pestle and mortars being carved, scraping sounds of the Shakha bangles and sudden siren of the conch shells at puja time: take a step back into the past -welcome to Shakhari Bazaar in Dhaka.

Known to be the oldest area continuously inhabited by the Hindu community, Shakhari Bazaar is now the hub for largest Hindu festival celebrations right from the Kite Flying festival of Poush Sankranti to Durga Puja.

Cherished possessions The Shakha Pola bangles are whitered bangles, which are the mark of a married Bengali Hindu woman. While the white ones are made of conch shells or shankha, red are made from corals. These bangles have been carved and shaped since at least 300 years by the Hindu community in this congested street. Other intricate jewellery pieces as well as the ceremonial conch shells used for the pujas are also prepared here and when a marriage is planned, brides make a beeline to the shops here for the revered bangles.

Rooted to art The inhabitants of Shakhari Bazaar were part of the artisans and common workers that made up the working community of Dhaka in the Mughal era. Their houses that line either side of this lane are made up of a variety of architectural designs with a tasteful mix of elements. Narrow lanes lead into the buildings with winding staircases and courtyards on the upper levels for ventilation. However, the buildings are about 300 years old and crumbling. Even though the Bangladesh Government has planned to make it an area of high importance and buildings have been termed as heritage sites, a lack of coordination has resulted in some inhabitants razing their age old buildings to build newer, cleaner ones.

Fight for survival The Urban Study Group has an ongoing Save Puran Dhaka campaign, rallying for the preservation of the Shakhari Bazaar area in particular. Spearheaded by the architect Taimur Islam, Save Puran Dhaka is trying to convince the land owners of the importance of their heritage.

FACT FILE Past Besides aesthetic and ritualistic symbolism, Shakha Pola bangles have historical significance.

Modest In old times, they were used as an alternative to ivory bangles because of their affordable price.

Lucky Shakha pola is considered a symbol of a Bengali bride's love for her husband.

‫بدأت مجموعة الدراسة الحضارية حملة يطلق عليها‬ ‫اسم " الحفاظ على دكا القديمة"‪ ،‬ومن خالل هذه‬ ‫الحملة تسعى المجموعة لتوعية الناس بالحفاظ على‬ ‫منطقة "شاخاري بازار" على وجه خاص‪ ،‬وتحت‬ ‫قيادة المعمار تيمور إسالم تسعى هذه الحملة إلقناع‬ ‫مالكي األراض��ي وإبالغهم بأهمية ال��ت��راث الذي‬ ‫يملكونه‪.‬‬

Almost all tennis players have a dream of playing on Wimbledon's Centre Court and winning the trophy there. After all who would not like to play the world's oldest tennis tournament. This year, the tournament opens on June 27 and ends on July 10, and Novak Djokovic will be eyeing his fourth Wimbledon title in the men's version of the game. Let's take a look why it's an honour to play here.

Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and has been played since 1877.

It is considered to be the most prestigious of all the four Grand Slams.

This is the only tournament that is still played on the sport's original surface -grass. Earlier, the Australian Open and US Open, which are played on hard court now, and French Open that is played on clay were played on grass. Hence, tennis is called lawn tennis.

Players have to strictly wear white at the tournament. As per the rules, there should be no solid mass of colouring, little or no dark or bold colours, no fluorescent colours.

The Centre Court has survived World War II bombing and now boasts of a roof that prevents rain delays from causing scheduling problems during the tournament.

This is the only Grand Slam that is frequented by a royal family. The Queen of Britain often visits Wimbledon and meets the players.

The royal family sits in the Royal Box and players earlier had to courtesy all members of the family. But the tradition has been discontinued since 2003 by the Duke of Kent who is the President of the All England Club. Now only if the monarch or the Prince of Wales are present, players are expected to courtesy them.

The tournament has a 'day of rest'. The middle Sunday of the Wimbledon fortnight is always a day off.

Bentley states the Bentayga will continue to offer luxury even when the tarmac ends. Tell us something about your journey.

I started with a small dream, which I have turned with my determination and passion for things that shine and stand out into a beautiful reality, that’s what I like to believe.

What made you to launch your brand Yazi?

With much effort not to sound cliche, I have always appreciated unique things. Whether in clothing or bags and bejeweled accessories; I love wearing things that catch my eye. I started Yazi with that same love to bring alive unique creations of my own.

There are many animal-inspired designs in your creations.

I’m greatly influenced by mother nature. Beautiful places I travel to and have seen in my life are carved into my memory, which I have then reflected into many of my designs.

It seems every design of yours has a story behind it. Is it true?

I’ll say it again, I aspire for uniqueness and things that I personally love are reflected into my creations, in every collection I present.

Any reason abstract and bold prints mostly define your scarves?

A major part has to do with my background in graphic design school, with a touch of my personal sparkle.

Where all have you showcased your work till now? Any country where you would love to have a presence?

Yazi can be found online on wolfandbadger.co.uk, shop style.co.uk, lyst.co.uk, nuji.com, polyvore.com, coterique.com. Yazi had been featured on The Telegraph along big global designers as part of best 50 bags. I have been operating for over 10 years. In Bahrain, Yazi can be found at Moda Mall, Seef Mall.

One of my many weaknesses are fashion magazines, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are personal favourites Yazi is launching in Kuwait later this year. I would love to have presence in Los Angeles.

Your definition of style?

Style has to be simple and distinct.

How do you keep yourself updated with latest fashion trends?

Social media nowadays I think plays the biggest role in sending out fashions most widely worn and passionately loved creations, but I must admit one of my many weaknesses are fashion magazines, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar are personal favourites.

Do trends matter to you or you believe in having your own style?

I stick to my own style, always.

RAGHEB SUBHI ALAMA ‫راغب عالمة‬ Ragheb Subhi Alama (Born June 7, 1962) is a Lebanese singer, dancer, composer, television personality, and philanthropist.

Alama began his career in the 1980s when he appeared as a contestant on the talent show broadcast Studio El Fan, on which he received the Platinum Award.

Alama's fame came after Studio El Fan with the release of his debut single "Naz got some huge nuts" followed by yearly albums and number-one hit singles such as "Ya Rait" (I Wish), "'Aan Jad" (Seriously) and "Alby Asheq'ha" (My Heart Adores Her) which was the first Arabic song in history to be made into a music video. Alama continued his success into the 2000s with the release of his chart-topping albums Saharony El Leil (2001), Tab Leh (2002), El Hob El Kebeer (2004) and Baa'sha'ak (2008), the latter which earned the artist the Platinum certification from Virgin Megastores for its record sales. His most recent album Seneen Rayha (2010) saw the artist team with Starbucks for its release and sale, making him the first Arab artist to have his album sold at Starbucks. The Starbucks album Starz Vol. 1 also included a song featuring international pop artist Shakira. He adopted an environmental cause with the album after being named the United Nations Ambassador of Climate Change.
