LOW LOADERS
DRIVE
on a standard Category B driving licence
UK Government regulations update Driving Towards a Greener Future As businesses across the UK look for greener ways to transport goods, one of the biggest concerns has been the weight of electric vehicles. While electric vans produce zero tailpipe emissions, their large battery packs are considerably heavier than the diesel engines they replace. This extra weight reduces the amount of cargo an electric van can legally carry under traditional weight limits. To encourage businesses to switch to cleaner transport, the UK Government introduced an important change to driving licence regulations.
The 4 Tonne Allowance Explained... Traditionally, anyone with a standard Category B driving licence can drive a van weighing up to 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg). Anything heavier normally requires a higher licence category.
However, because electric vans carry heavy battery systems, the Government recognised that many zero-emission vehicles would exceed this limit despite carrying exactly the same load as their diesel equivalents. To solve this problem, drivers holding a standard Category B licence can now legally drive certain alternatively fuelled vehicles, including fully electric vans with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of up to 4 tonnes, provided the vehicle meets the relevant legal requirements. In simple terms, the additional 750kg allowance compensates for the weight of the batteries rather than allowing businesses to carry significantly heavier loads.
What Does This Mean for Businesses? This change makes switching to electric commercial vehicles much easier. Without the new regulations, many businesses would have needed to: • Employ drivers with higher-category licences. • Invest in additional driver training. • Reduce payloads to remain within legal weight limits.
On the Move P.5
Ready For The Future. At MaxiMover, we closely monitor developments in vehicle technology and transport legislations. Government support for larger electric vans is another positive step towards reducing emissions without compromising the reliability businesses depend on.

Instead, companies can continue using drivers who already hold a standard car licence while benefiting from cleaner vehicle technology. For businesses making regular local deliveries, courier services, retail distribution, maintenance work or specialist transport, this removes one of the biggest barriers to adopting electric low loader vans.

Production news. We are pleased to announce the addition of our new SmartLift Machine to the production area. This investment represents our ongoing commitment to improving production efficiency while providing our team with the latest technology to support their work. The SmartLift Machine is designed to streamline material handling, reduce manual lifting and enable faster, more consistent production processes, helping us increase overall productivity and meet growing customer demand. Just as importantly, the SmartLift Machine enhances workplace safety by reducing the physical strain associated with lifting and moving heavy materials. By minimising repetitive manual handling tasks, it helps lower the risk of workplace injuries and creates a safer, more comfortable working environment
for our production team. This investment reflects our dedication to supporting our employees while continually improving the quality, efficiency and safety of our operations.

MaxiMover goes digital! As part of the company restructure, we’re now implementing a fully digital end to end van manufacturing process. From the initial chassis delivery, sales order through production, quality control and final handover, every stage will be digitally managed to improve efficiency, accuracy, and traceability. This streamlined approach will enable greater collaboration between departments, reduce lead times, enhance quality control and provide customers with a more seamless and transparent experience from order placement through to vehicle collection. Testing is now well underway across the production process and is progressing successfully. While further testing and refinement will continue as we optimise the processes, this marks a significant milestone in our digital transformation and represents a major step forward in driving MaxiMover into the future.
