OVERCOMING THE PANDEMIC

a y W MANEL CASAS

President of the Organisation Committee of the XI Maxibasketball European Championship and member of the FIMBA Advisory Committee

A LONG

Every project requires work and effort and requires overcoming challenges that appear along the way. However, no one could imagine that a pandemic was going to delay our usual summer event for two years. With everyone’s support we have been able to overcome this immense challenge. Now is time to play!

WELCOME TEN DAYS TO ENJOY

M

ÁLAGA 2022 IS the fruit of a long road that began in 2018 when Spain was chosen to host the FIMBA 2020 Maxi Basketball European Championship. The process has been longer and more costly than anyone suspected. When it seems that we have overcome the pandemic, the whole world shakes facing a new war. A stupid war that causes a lot of suffering and will deprive us of the presence of many of our friends. FIMBA has

returned to a certain normality in 2o22 and wants to do it showing its tournaments as an example of solidarity and friendship between citizens of different nationalities. We are going to enjoy the sport for ten days, but without forgetting those who will not be with us. Our competition is open to all countries of the world. Together, let’s make the tournament a perfect example of harmony and peace. WELCOME TO MALAGA!

TOGETHER

WHEN

I

am delighted to welcome you to Málaga. Serious sport and fun are coming together at the 11th FIMBA European Maxibasketball Championship held here in Málaga for the next nine days. After the championships held in Riga, Athens, Helsinki, Hamburg, Pesaro, Zagreb, Kaunas, Ostrava, Novi Sad, and Maribor, the beautiful city of Málaga is hosting this important event for the first time since 2000. Málaga is a place that always welcomes you with open arms. Undoubtedly, it is a city that never disappoints, a place that never fails to move you with its unique light, happiness, and hospitality. Experiences of joy and warmth, light, and passion – of lovers who, in this place, are always guided towards the bright sunshine. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has rescheduled the 11th EMBC from 2020 and 2021 to 2022. We are meeting

THE

again, four years since the previous European Championship and three years after the previous World Championship. Great organizers and passionate athletes never give up. After the pandemic, millions of players have restarted playing, and nothing can stop the immense wave driven by the desire to continue playing. Therefore, the championship is called “OPEN” because its participation is open to non-European teams, which, in the second phase, will compete for the medals in the “Rest of the World” classification. Athletes from all over Europe and the rest of the world have gathered for an international celebration of “Sport for Life” and to enjoy everything this capital, Costa del Sol – a diverse, cultural, and cosmopolitan city – has to offer. The challenge for Málaga has been to give these more than 2,300

players a chance to engage in their passion – which is not so hard to do in this lovely city, a corner bathed in a sea, which welcomes and teaches interesting virtues. For nine days, bouncing basketballs will echo from the nearly 500 games being played here. Maxibasketball games are a “slice of life”. They are about people coming together to celebrate their love of the game of basketball and their passion for life. To be a part of this unforgettable experience is tremendous and unforgettable. Success here defines not only as winning the game but as understanding that Maxibasketball is an opportunity to do something good for our health, to have fun, and contribute to everyone’s well-being. FIMBA championships strive to deliver a top-level event with an equal emphasis on the competitive and social sides. Málaga meets the challenge: the organizers can be proud of their work, which includes

185 participating teams, the most ever at any European championship, from 20 European countries and 15 countries from the rest of the world. FIMBA is an example of the great strides that have been made in Europe and in the world and gives us the chance to consider the continuity of sport in human life. I appreciate the efforts of the national authorities in favor of a high-level tournament. To the FIMBA Representatives, having in their hands the fate of thousands of basketball players from their countries, take care of those issues that exceed the sporting aspect. Thanks to the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone else involved in bringing this event to life! I would like to wish each and every one of you a successful and enjoyable time in Málaga. Let’s all have fun in the spirit of friendly competition! Good luck!

GUIDE TO KNOW MALAGA

WHAT TO SEE WHAT TO DO

15

MARQUÉS DE LARIOS STREET KNOWN as Calle Larios, it is one of the most famous streets in Spain and concentrates the essence of Malaga. Full of bars, restaurants and shops, it is a must for anyone who spends a few days in the Andalusian city. It is considered the most expensive street in Spain if we exclude those in Madrid and Barcelona. It has been pedestrianized for twenty years and has become the axis of the rehabilitation of the historic center of the city. (Photo on the left)

BEACHES WITHOUT A DOUBT, one of the great attractions of visiting Malaga is enjoying the beaches, not only in the city, but on the Costa del Sol in general. There are many attractive beaches, but the closest to the city center is Malagueta beach, a place full of attractions.

ROMAN THEATRE IT IS the main vestige of the Roman presence in Malaga. It is located at the foot of the Alcazaba hill and retains a good part of the original stands.

ATARAZANAS MARKET LOCATED in a magnificent 19th century building, it is an ideal place to purchase the best local food. In addition, the area is full of tapas bars to try the gastronomic delights of the area.

SOHO YOU HAVE a neighborhood that has been remodeled in recent years and is characterized by housing numerous samples of street art on the facades of the buildings. It is also known as the Art District and is located near the Center for Contemporary Art.

LA ALCAZABA DE MÁLAGA THIS IS probably the most visited attraction in Malaga. It was built by the Arabs in the 11th century and was a palace that became the residence of the Arab rulers and, at the same time, a defensive fortress against the Christians. Inside there you can find numerous patios, fountains and gardens, as well as a museum that shows pieces of the city’s history.

CATHEDRAL THE BEGINNING of its construction dates back to the 16th century. It began to be built on the foundations of the mosque, but the lack of funds caused the work to be abandoned on several occasions. The construction process

lasted two centuries and the Cathedral was never finished in the way it had been planned. For example, it has a bell tower, despite the fact that two were contemplated in the initial design. It is advisable to climb the 200 steps (87 meters) to the highest point to see a perfect panorama of the city.

MUSEUMS MALAGA will offers during the basketball tournament an interesting range of museums where the visitor has different options to choose. Probably the most famous is the Picasso Museum, which more than 200 works by the great painter. As a complement, you can also visit the Picasso Birthplace Museum. Another great place where you can see masterpieces of painting is the Carmen Thyssen Museum, showing Andalusian and Spanish art in general. The Pompidou Center (in the photo) is a branch of the famous museum of Paris. The Contemporary Art Center offers an overview of current art, from the 20th and 21st centuries. There are also centers dedicated to specific themes, such as the Flamenco Art Museum, the Automobile Museum, the Glass and Crystal Museum and the Art and Popular Traditions Museum.
