23 COSTA RICA 2016: MAXIBASKETBALL RETURNS TO ONE OF ITS FAVORITE DESTINATIONS a basketball player in the late seventies and since the beginning, he has not stopped practicing the sport of rings thanks to Maxibasketball, which has been his great ally to stay active and continuously competing internationally since 1993. San Jose: a capital that looks to the future Nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, part of the natural and ecological heritage that has given a place of honor to Costa Rica in the concert of nations, San José, capital of the Republic, is a city with a village background in pursuit of progress.
By: Leonardo Pandolfo and Manuel Arias Eight months after the 2015 Orlando World Championship, the countries of the Americas will have the great opportunity to live an unforgettable experience in what will be the IX Pan American Maxibasketball Championship to be held in San Jose, Costa Rica in April 2016.

Costa Rica was one of the first venues to host an international event of Maxibasketball. It was back in 1995 when the small Central American nation hosted the III Maxibasketball World Championship. The friendliness and warmth that characterizes the “Ticos” as Costa Ricans are called, the beauty of its beaches and mountains, the proximity of the best tourist destinations and of course the Pura Vida! motto and the peace that permeates this country, made that distant world championship a resounding success. It is no exaggeration to say that all attendees took great experiences from Costa Rica and above all a great desire to return to play their beloved sport in Costa Rica.

“After we organized the World Championship in 1995, in all events that I have attended as a player, people of all countries ask me: When are you going to organize another event to return to Costa Rica? I hope to welcome all of them and many more friends of the Maxibasketball next year at the Pan American championship that we will organize,“ says Osvaldo Pandolfo, president of the Organizing Committee of the IX Pan American Maxibasketball San Jose, Costa Rica. Pandolfo was also at the helm of the event 20 years ago and is one of the “Maxi” pioneers, as Ticos call it in their country. He is also a sports leader with over 25 years of experience in organizing both national and international mass events in Costa Rica. His sports career started as
Its innovating ideas, the industrialization drive, and the consolidation of democracy as a hallmark of modern Costa Rica, emerged in the nineteenth century from a city that was one of the first to have worldwide electric street lighting. A key factor for the progress of San José has been its relationship with tourism. The city not only offers a varied first class cultural and artistic agenda, but also opportunities for recreation and entertainment for everyone. Historic monuments, such as the National Theatre, the National Cultural Centre, the Old Customs building, the Central Post Office, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Museum, join other tourist sites, like boulevards, parks, public areas, restaurants and hotels to provide a menu designed to please the most demanding visitors. Besides the purely urban tourism, given its geography and privileged position in the center of the country, San Jose offers the opportunity to make one or more day trips to several of the landscape and natural wonders that make up the Costa Rican heritage, such as mountains, volcanoes, forests, jungles, rivers, and beaches. These and other conditions have caused that several world famous publications like The Economist or Financial Times, have placed the Costa Rican capital as one of the best cities to live in Latin America, and with more favorable growth prospects. In recent years, the capital has been the scene of many cultural events, especially sports, which has implied the construction and improvement of many infrastructures. The city was the venue for the Central American Games “San Jose 2013”, the first event of the International Olympic calendar. A year later, in 2014, the city was also home to some of the games of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup “Costa Rica 2014”. Friends of Maxibasketball, we wait for you in San Jose next April!
