Letter from the

First Wish Parent Dear Wish Parent, My name is Linda Pauling and I am a wish mom. When my son, Chris, was diagnosed with leukemia in 1979, I cried and asked myself, why my child?

One of the hardest parts by far was addressing Chris’ questions about what was happening to him. I knew my son would never grow up. And with that, came the sadness of knowing everything my 7-year-old son would miss.

We decided to make the most of the life he did have, starting with his one true wish – to become a police officer. Chris’ favorite show was CHiPs and he dreamed of being a police officer. When a friend said he could help make Chris’ wish come true, I was not sure what to expect, but the memory of Chris’ wish day will live forever in my mind.

Chris received an official uniform from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, including badges and motorcycle wings. My friend and officers from DPS had Chris helping with traffic stops, before they took him on a ride above the city in the helicopter.

He was the happiest I’ve ever seen him. He came alive again, transforming into a child full of hope, joy and wonder.

For that day, my son forgot about his physicians, the hospital stays and even his pain. I can’t begin to express the happiness I felt in my heart and, because of this, I continue to remember Chris’ wish more than I remember his illness.

When Chris passed away, the community who came together to make Chris’ wish a reality considered how together, we could give this experience to other children and their families. A group of volunteers and less than $40 – that is how Make-A-Wish® began.

I truly believe Make-A-Wish was the reason for Chris’ life.

I continue to be amazed and inspired with how one little boy’s wish to be a police officer now touches the lives of so many people. I still feel Chris’ loss daily, but I also feel Chris’ wish helps ease the burden on my heart. I will never forget the joy in his eyes during his wish and the days that followed.

The caring people at Make-A-Wish Arizona want to do something very special for your child and ask for nothing in return. A wish is meant to be an opportunity for your child to experience what brings them the most happiness and to provide a memory for your family for decades to come.

I have seen the incredible impact of a wish through my own eyes – with Chris and the hundreds of thousands of wish kids who have followed him. It is my sincere hope that you and your family will experience that impact for yourselves.

In these pages you will be introduced to our chapter’s process, will be involved in planning and granting your child’s wish, and will learn what role each of us, especially your child, plays in the wish process.

The Impact

of a Wish We are so pleased to give your child the gift of a wish. During this difficult time in your child’s life, we want them to imagine what their one true wish might be, and then we will work with them and with you to make that wish come true.

While this is an exciting time for your child, the wish process is also an important part of their medical journey. For your child to experience the healing powers associated with the hope and anticipation of a wish, it must be THEIR wish that is granted.

More Than Medicine When children are battling a critical illness, so much of normal childhood is taken away from them — it is exhausting, both emotionally and physically. A wish is something that gives kids the opportunity to look outside their illness — it restores a sense of childhood back to the child and normalcy back to the family.

Research shows, and physicians agree, wishes can help improve a child’s quality of life and produce better health outcomes.

The Dr. Patel Wish Impact Study We’ve known anecdotally about the transformational power of a wish, and now a first-of-its-kind study is opening the door to possibilities of medical and financial benefits. In the Dr. Patel Wish Impact Study, Nationwide Children’s Hospital examined quality of life and health care utilization among patients who received a wish and a control group who did not. The study found patients who were granted a wish were more likely to have fewer unplanned hospital and emergency department visits.

Why Wishes Matter In 2015, Make-A-Wish Israel conducted a study to measure how wish-granting experiences influence medical outcomes of children with critical illnesses. The results revealed wishes not only increased hope, they also improved the children’s physical and emotional health. The wishes made the impossible, possible — helping children replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope.

“It is possible that wishing enabled these children to dream about what seemed unobtainable, out of reach, and thus created an experience of achieving the impossible,” researchers wrote.

Granting Process Every member of our team at Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada is dedicated to guiding you and your child through the process of granting their wish.

Let’s get started!

We Take Care of Everything The first thing we want you to do is relax. There will be NO monetary cost to you for this wish. We will take care of the planning; you will take care of the fun. It is our job, and our joy, to provide a wish for your child that meets their request and provides you and your family a wonderful experience.

Your Role in the Wish Granting Process You are a vital part of your child’s wish. Our team members try to make the planning as easy for you as we possibly can, but there are times we will need your help. It is important that you respond quickly when a member of our team reaches out to you. PLEASE let us know as soon as possible about any changes in your family situation or your contact information.

Wishes take time to plan. The nature of the wish, your child’s medical condition, and/or family and school schedules can influence the scheduling of your child’s wish. Your patience and cooperation help us create the best possible wish experience for your child.

At each step along the way, you will be asked to be available to members of your wish granting team. The sooner you respond, the sooner we can move forward with planning the wish. Each requested meeting or conversation is a vital part of the wish granting process and we cannot proceed until each step is completed. Your cooperation will help shorten the time it takes for your child to receive their wish.

What Happens Next?

You will meet several people along your wish journey who represent Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada and who play different roles in the wish experience.

In the next few pages we will explain more about who they are and how they will interact with you.

The Wish Experience Referral

Welcome Call

Every wish experience begins with a referral. We rely on wish referrals from medical professionals, parents, legal guardians and family members with detailed knowledge of the child’s current medical condition. A child qualifies for a wish if they have a critical illness, are between the ages of 2 ½ and 18, and have not received a wish from Make-A-Wish or any other wish granting organization.

Once the child is deemed eligible for a wish, a Make-A-Wish volunteer calls the family to share the exciting news. During this time, our volunteers share the wish process and collect valuable information about the wish child, their medical journey and other important information.

Wish Discovery The five wish categories are I wish to go, I wish to be, I wish to meet, I wish to have and I wish to give. Our wish discovery team will help wish kids determine their true wish. This is one of the most emotionally demanding positions at Make-AWish, but also the most rewarding. The wish discovery team works work in pairs and majority of the wish discovery visits are conducted at The Wishing Place. Volunteers and staff work together to ensure the child’s wish is determined.

Eligibility After a child is referred, Make-A-Wish’s National Medical Affairs Team will determine the child’s eligibility for a wish.

Wish Granted

All wishes must be approved by staff, management and sometimes the Board of Directors. To be considered for approval, all wishes must meet our National and Local Chapter Guidelines. There are several types of wishes MakeA-Wish cannot grant. For example, bounce houses, inground pools, cash, medical treatment, just to name a few. The team is also taking into consideration the family’s ability to sustain a wish long after it is granted.

The child’s imagination is always the driving force in determining, designing and coordinating a life-changing wish experience. While most wish requests fall into five major categories, the possibilities are endless because kids are so creative and inspired by the change to have a wish experience.

Our team strives to personalize each wish and make it match the wish kid’s idea of a perfect day. The impact of a wish is powerful and long-lasting.

Wish Planning Our wish coordinators work directly with the wish family to plan all the details of the wish. In some cases, we seek volunteer support from wish experts. Wish experts are people and companies who can bring expertise about the wish to the planning process.

Volunteers The power that makes these cogs turn to grant wishes is provided by over 260 active volunteers. Volunteers are utilized in each step of the wish process. However, your wish coordinator is and will always be your main contact for any questions or concerns that may arise. Please work directly with your wish coordinator for any details or concerns about anything in the wish process.

Wish Discovery Meeting During the Discovery process, your family will meet with your wish discovery team comprised of volunteers and/or staff members. It is encouraged that you review this handbook prior to your meetings, so you can bring any questions you may have to discuss with your team. Our chapter holds most of our wish discovery meetings here at our office, The Wishing Place, though we do make exceptions when needed based on your child’s medical condition. When necessary, wish discovery meetings can take place in the wish child’s home or in the form of a virtual wish discovery. The goal of the meeting is to get to know your family and the wish child. We will guide your family through the process of discovering your child’s true wish!

What to Expect The wish discovery team will gather information from your child and you at the initial visit to help move their wish along its journey.

The wish discovery team will collect the following information: H All pre-wish materials that were sent to you via mail after the initial welcome call including:

H The Wish Box (fully decorated, wish box cards filled out, etc.)

H Non-Verbal Communication Worksheet fully filled out (if applicable).

H Wish family and wish participants’ information.

H Medical information and an emergency contact.

H Wish child likes and interests.

H Details about the wish and child’s vision for the wish (if known by the end of the visit).

H Requested wish timing and other information pertinent to the wish.

We are determined to find your child’s true wish and offer as many meetings as needed to get to it. Please allow your child to go through the entire discovery process. You don’t need to come to the first or any meeting with the wish ideas determined, we will work with your child to ensure we’re capturing their ideas for their wish. This is part of the wish process, so please, allow your child to experience it in its entirety.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada requires signatures on all forms by all parents/legal guardians and other wish participants (if any) over the age of 18. We must obtain signatures from both biological parents before proceeding with the planning.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada staff members will contact non-custodial parents directly to obtain their signatures, as needed.

Preparing for your Child’s Wish Discovery Meeting There will be certain documents required from you and it will be helpful if you gather the following that apply. Copies of these documents will be held securely in your child’s file at Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada.

H Copies of valid photo ID, driver’s license or passport for parents/legal guardians/participating adults. Do not worry if you don’t have passports.

H Copy of car insurance.

H Court documentation of guardianship, as needed.

Because each family is different, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada may require additional documents completed before we can move forward with planning your child’s wish. All information is kept confidential and most items will be collected by your wish discovery team at the wish meeting.

No wish planning will take place until all paperwork is completed and returned to Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. Once all paperwork has been obtained, the wish must go through concept approval. Additional approvals, including Medical Advisory Committee, Board, etc. may be required for concept approval.

Choosing a Wish There are several important things your child should consider about their wish: H What will bring them the most joy?

H What will give them strength to keep fighting during their

medical journey?

H What will provide them the hope they need to embrace the future?

During the visit, at least one member of the wish discovery team will spend time with your child, allowing them to develop their own vision and articulate their ideas about potential wishes.

It is important this meeting happens with minimal influence from you or other family members. We understand how tempting it is to insert your thoughts and ideas, but our experience has proven repeatedly that it is crucial to let the child make their own choice about their wish. Don’t worry, you will get a chance to tell us important information about your child, too.

Once the wish is determined and approved, you as the parent or legal guardian will be a part of the planning process and will participate in the wish experience.

It is possible that the wish discovery team may request a second meeting or a chance to speak to your child a few times, to get to know them better. Be patient with your child, and the process, and know that we are working together to provide an experience that will be life-changing for your child. Sometimes that takes a little more planning.

In addition, if your child is non-verbal, your wish discovery team may request contact information for people who are involved in their care to help get to the heart of your child’s wish.

We hope, at the end of the initial wish meeting, your wish discovery team will have helped your child brainstorm some ideas for a life-changing experience.

Determining the Wish Wish Types During your initial visit, one of your wish discovery volunteers will engage your child in fun activities designed to open their imagination and consider the possibilities of a wish. Learning about your child through fun helps create an individualized and meaningful wish experience.

Although each wish, like each child, is unique, our experience shows that most wishes fall under five wish types: H I wish to be

It is encouraged that your child brainstorm ideas within each of the wish categories mentioned above. Wishes are as creative as the children themselves! If your child’s wish does not fit into one of these categories, that’s ok! We will still try our best to make his or her wish come true.

Wish Limitations Please understand that as hard as we try, there are some requested wishes we cannot grant. Although we encourage wish kids to use their imaginations when considering their wish, there are policies and standards set forth by both Make-A-Wish® America and the Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada Board of Directors that must be considered in planning a wish experience.

Our policies and standards are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of wish kids, their families and our organization.

All wishes are reviewed by the Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada staff and, in some cases, by our Board of Directors, before approval is granted. Wishes involving travel must be reviewed and approved by our Medical Advisory Committee in addition to your child’s medical team. Please be advised that our Medical Advisory Committee makes the final decision regarding a requested wish’s medical appropriateness for all wish children.

Wishes must be medically appropriate, age appropriate, and directly related to the interests and desires of the wish child.

Make-A-Wish is unable to grant wishes including, but not limited to: any wish involving firearms or other weapons, gifts of money, on-road vehicles such as cars or motorcycles, wheelchair lifts on vehicles, medical assistance or medical treatments, housing or rent, in-ground swimming pools, and/or solicitation of large scale support of the public.* We encourage wish children to consider at least three options and the “why of each wish” during their discovery process in case their choice is not approved. If your child’s wish choice is one that we can’t grant, we will work with them to find a choice that is meaningful to them and will bring them joy. *Note: This list is not all inclusive and Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada reserves the right to deny a wish request due to a child’s age, medical condition, safety challenges, or the nature of the wish.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada may, on a case-by-case basis, modify or otherwise provide certain items, experiences, or things that may fall outside of our general expectations to accomplish the goal of granting each unique wish. No wish can or should be compared to any other wish granted, as no wish is exactly the same.

The Publicity Form Reviewed One of the forms you must complete and sign is the Publicity Release Form.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada is dependent on community and donor support to grant wishes. Stories in the press and on social media about our wish kids, our wish families, our volunteers and our donors inspire others to support wishes.

To that end, we ask each wish family to review a Publicity Form during the wish meeting and to determine what, if any, publicity they are comfortable sharing about their child’s wish experience.

If you select “Publicity OK” during your wish meeting, you are giving us permission to share basic elements of your child’s profile such as their first name, age, photographs, general medical condition and wish on our website, social media channels, and/or newsletters, as well as potential local media and events.

Last names and addresses are NEVER used in publicity and your decision whether to participate in publicity efforts will never affect your child’s wish experience.

Your Wish Planning Begins!

Your Wish Coordinator and You After your wish discovery paperwork is completed and the wish is chosen and approved, your child will be assigned a wish coordinator, who is a Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada staff member. Wish coordinators are experienced professionals who will arrange the logistics for your child’s wish. They will be a valuable partner and resource to you.

Your wish coordinator supports your entire wish experience. You will work with your wish coordinator throughout the wish planning process. Your wish coordinator may contact you occasionally via phone and/or email seeking additional information required for planning your child’s wish. Communication is critical - please respond to these requests promptly!

If your wish coordinator is calling, the request is specific to the wish and important for the wish process.

Sometimes wishes are a surprise for the wish child. Other times, in order to prescribe a wish child hope, wish children are involved in the wish planning process. Your wish coordinator can help you decide your child’s level of involvement in the planning process.

Connecting with your Child’s Physician Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada works actively with families and medical professionals to verify that a child’s wish is safe and medically appropriate for their age and condition.

Before proceeding with any wish plans, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada will contact your child’s medical professional to share your child’s wish choice and ensure that the timing and nature of the wish is medically appropriate. If your child’s wish involves travel, or if Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada has any other concerns about your child’s safety, the Medical Advisory Committee and the National Medical Affairs team will be contacted to determine if the wish will be medically approved. The wish may be denied if a chapter has any reason to believe a wish is not safe for the child.

In addition to the above, our National guidelines require us to reach out to your child’s doctor 30 days prior to travel to ensure the wish is still medically appropriate. If there has been a change in your child’s medical condition, it is your responsibility to notify your wish coordinator promptly, as this may affect wish planning or granting.

Determining the Wish Participants Participants in your child’s wish may vary depending on the nature of the wish. Scheduling the Wish Once your child’s wish is approved, we will work with you to schedule the wish. Your wish discovery team will ask you at the wish discovery meeting for three month/year time periods convenient for your child and your family. They will also ask you for dates that should be avoided. Flexibility from you in scheduling your child’s wish will ensure a smooth planning process. You will be contacted once the dates are confirmed.

Please be advised that the dates you provide will be noted during the planning process, but we cannot guarantee availability. We may also ask you to keep the dates secret from the child to enhance the excitement of the day when they are told their wish will be granted.

We make every effort to grant your child’s wish within one year of concept approval.* We set this timeline to ensure the wish occurs when your child needs it most. We try to grant all wishes as quickly as possible unless there are medical or wishrelated circumstances which lengthen the time needed to grant the wish or require a child to change his or her wish.

Some travel wishes require six or more months to plan and schedule. Additionally, some travel wishes are restricted to certain months of the year. Your child’s wish coordinator may recommend certain months or dates for your child’s wish to be scheduled based on feedback from wish participants, travel experts, and/or your child’s healthcare provider. There are many factors involved in the planning and scheduling of a wish experience, and we appreciate your patience as we strive to create your child’s life-changing wish. Please be aware, sometimes there are elements beyond our control that may delay a wish.

Patience, communication and working together is important for you and our team.

Unless it is medically necessary, we cannot guarantee any specific dates for your child’s wish until travel is booked.

Although we do our best to accommodate requests, please note wish scheduling is dependent on Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada and the organization’s partner’s availability.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada can provide request letters for school or employers asking for time to participate in a wish, as needed. *Note: We understand that a wish child could become ill at any time. If your child’s medical condition changes within 30 days of travel, you are required to notify your Wish Coordinator immediately.

Wishes can only be canceled, postponed or rescheduled if medically necessary.

The Wish is Granted Your Child’s Wish Details Your wish coordinator will keep you updated on details about your child’s wish as they plan. Please be patient and understand that there may be times when there is no news to share.

Please make sure to share any changes in contact information, such as new phone numbers, emails, or home addresses.

We might need to contact you on an urgent decision. If we cannot reach you in time, it could delay the wish.

Most specific details of the wish will be shared with you within weeks of the wish date to guarantee that all information is as up to date as possible. If your child’s wish involves travel, we will provide you with an itinerary close to your travel date outlining all the details of your trip.

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada will cover all direct expenses related to your child’s wish. These items will vary depending on your child’s wish type (i.e., with travel wishes, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada will cover hotel accommodations, airfare, baggage fees, meals, etc.).

Please refer to your wish itinerary or any wish plans your wish coordinator has provided and remember to be on time during scheduled parts of your child’s wish. This will guarantee your child will enjoy his/her wish in its entirety.

WISH SPONSORS Generous donors from the community make it possible for us to grant the wishes of children. In some cases, donors or community partners are invited to participate in some way or even host the wish reveal. Based on your child’s personality and comfort level with this aspect of the wish, we will make every effort to match him or her with an appropriate wish sponsor.

After the Wish Wish Satisfaction Survey Our goal at Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada is to provide you every opportunity to enjoy the wish experience with your child.

After your child’s wish is granted, a wish satisfaction survey will be sent via e-mail to your family. Your participation in this survey helps ensure that we continue to create high-quality wishes and provides us insight into our wish granting process from the perspective of the wish child and family.

Wish Pictures We love to see pictures of wish children experiencing their wish! Our staff, volunteers, and referring physicians look forward to hearing about your child’s wish. Having pictures from the wish also helps us secure additional funds so that even more children can have their wish granted. Please send wish photos, that feature your child, to your wish coordinator.

H Become a Wish Ambassador Wish kids and their families are encouraged to share how their wish transformed their child and/or their lives by becoming Wish Ambassadors for our chapter. Wish Ambassadors may be called upon to volunteer their time at local events, media opportunities and/or Board of Directors meetings to share about their wish experience and the impact it had on their lives.

H Create a Walk For Wishes® Team Be a part of our annual Walk For Wishes, held each spring in Las Vegas to raise money for future wishes. Participate in the 1-mile walk or 5K run each year with your family and invite friends. Learn more at WalkForWishesSNV.org.
