Granting a wish reignites a purpose and drive not just within wish kids, but every person involved — from the child, their family and the wish granters, to the social worker and dedicated medical team like our staff at Medical City Children’s Hospital. For children battling critical illness, as well as their families, Make-A-Wish® grants one-of-a-kind wish experiences that restore crucial hope and give kids a reason to keep fighting.

We’ve seen firsthand the positive medical effects granting a wish has on the hundreds of wish kids who walk through our hospital doors each year. Wishes are catalysts for hope — profoundly effective in fueling a child’s drive to defy the odds and push toward tomorrow.

Thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate joy. This year, we are proud to announce Medical City Children’s Hospital and CEO, Mr. Bill Lee, as the Honorary Chairs. Tonight celebrates and honors children battling critical illnesses and the impact a wish has on them, their families and entire communities.

The part you, our generous supporters, play is a key role in spreading hope, strength, and joy and increasing a sense of compassion, optimism, and faith for everyone who participates in the power of a wish. Serving 161 counties, Make-A-Wish North Texas granted 677 wishes in 2017 and we’re on pace to grant even more this year. But we need your help! There are currently about 1,200 kids waiting on their wish to be granted, which means 1,200 opportunities for you to help them replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope.

Scientific and medical data show a wish has the power to make kids feel stronger, happier, less fearful and more determined. One moment can change everything. Make this that moment.

For the child, joy is an unforgettable experience based on their vision of a wish. But granting wishes is not just a one-time event. The joy and impact of wishes extends far beyond a single event or moment in time. Medical professionals, sponsors, communities, wish families and volunteers all say wishes have the power to change the lives of everyone involved.

A Message from The Chairman of The Board and President & CEO Welcome to the 22nd Annual Wish Night - Sparks of Joy! This is an evening to come together and celebrate wishes and the lives they help transform – as well as move closer to our vision of granting the heartfelt wish of every eligible child.

Pierson’s story is one you will hear about this evening. Not long after he was born, his parents got news every parent dreads. Pierson had a congenital heart defect. He would endure his first major heart surgery at just three years old and afterwards suffer serious complications that would impact him for years to come. He had to relearn how to walk, talk, jump, eat and even play, all over again. For this family, one wish proved to be life-changing. Pierson and his parents have become ambassadors for Make-A-Wish so they can share their experience and inspire others to get involved.

“I’m sitting here watching him play hockey right now and I can’t express enough how his wish was such a crucial turning point for him. I really don’t know where Pierson would be today without it. Lives are changed because of wishes in more ways than people know.” ~ Jane, Pierson’s Mom For children battling critical illness, so much happens that they have no control over. They endure the unthinkable. And their parents… well…put yourself in their shoes. When you support wishes, you help kids take back some control, build hope and gain the edge they need. For many, a wish is a turning point that can shift a child’s future.

Medical research is continuing to uncover multiple facets of wish impact. Wishes provide the physical and emotional benefits that can give children with critical illness a higher chance of survival! With a wish, children see fewer and shorter hospital stays and have an overall reduction in healthcare utilization in the year following their wishes. Less time in the hospital can mean more time in school, parents back to work sooner and on top of that, controlled healthcare costs. Wishes go far beyond nice. They’re necessary.

Every eligible child needs to be able to count on their wish.

Children are being referred for wishes in record numbers, yet funding drives the pace at which children’s wishes can be granted.

There are over 1,200 kids in North Texas currently waiting.

The time is now. Be the spark our smallest Texans need as they endure the unfathomable.

Her career has taken her from live breaking news to interviews with everyone from President George W. Bush to Jimmy Kimmel and Amal Clooney. Currently, Shelly is a contributor to the WFAA team.
