Mothers and Fathers

Wewanted to take this opportunity and pay tribute to mothers and fathers in our community. This Mother’s and Father’s Day take time to express your gratitude and appreciation to those who have shown you love and appreciate their sacrifices, guidance, and unconditional love over the years!

DIANNE HUGHES R

I wanted to express my deepest gratitude to my mom, who has given me unwavering love, guidance, and support throughout my life. Her unconditional love and positive words of encouragement will always be with me. Her faith was the spiritual pillar of our family and she truly exemplified what she preached. Although I look like my father, my mom always told me I had her heart and smile, which is very true. She is my confidant and my greatest source of inspiration. Recently, she had the pleasure of taking on the role of a great-grandma, and this past March, at the age of 80, she tied the knot to a man she has known for more than 50 years. Congratulations! Thank you Mom for always being there and proudly taking on the role of a stay-at-home mom.

SHARON PHARR R

Sharon Pharr is my wonderful mother. Traits I hope to possess such as fortitude and compassion, I can easily trace back to her upbringing. She grew up operating a Christian horseback-riding camp with her father. Her brother died when he was young, and as the oldest of five kids with a mother suffering from mental illness, she learned early in life to be a strong motherly foundation for her family. She is the most loving person I know, and I pray her character passes on to my own children.

ANN GRANT R

What a wonderful way to celebrate the person who knows you best and taught you the most in life Mother's Day. My mother, Ann, taught me a love of home and taking care of all those inside of it. To me, there is no greater honor than to take care of those we love and she does that well. She taught me how to cook and more importantly, how to entertain and how to make someone feel welcome in your home. My mother taught me etiquette, manners, and respect for others. Growing up, Holidays were always celebrated with beautifully set tables and delicious foods with traditions that carry down to the next generation. My mother taught me one thing that is so important to me, how to dress appropriately, to carry yourself well, and to have respect for yourself and your integrity. Most importantly of all, my mother taught me the love of Christ and the importance of honoring Him with your life. Happy Mother's Day to all who love and nurture us.

— AMY MONTGOMERY GIBBONS, OWNER OF AMY MONTGOMERY HOME

JOAN WARREN R

My mom was named after my grandma Katy's favorite actress Joan Crawford. A graduate of Ohio State, she carved a career as a dental hygienist working part-time and then full-time as my sister Cheryl and I matured. A task master, she taught me many principles; faith, tenacity, an appreciation for arts, history travel and culture, altruism, delayed gratification, kindness, and self-reliance to name a few. Often, we have heard how we look alike, could be sisters, etc. Once I humorously said, “You know Mom, that's only a compliment to ONE of us, you're 84 what does that make me 82?" Her quick, witty retort? "Don't be so snarky!"

— PAM LEWIS, PRESIDENT PLA MEDIA

VICKI AND JIMMY PHILLIPS R

Mom, thank you for being such a bright, shining light in my life. You’re always my first phone call of the day. I cherish what a selfless woman you are, evidenced by your constant willingness to help and support both me and my business, Aubree P. Boutique. I'm forever grateful for our Market merchandise trips, your help with my boutique photos, and, most importantly, having your beautiful, smiling face in my shop.

Dad, you’re always so encouraging and eager to ask how my day went. You love telling anyone and everyone about my boutique and are always quick to hand out my business cards. Your support and guidance mean the world to me. When one door closed with my original location, you encouraged me to seek opportunities in Columbia. I’m so thankful you did, as the transition to Columbia has been more of a blessing than I ever could have imagined. Thank you both for your never-ending encouragement, support, and love. Happy Mother's Day & Happy Father's Day!

AUBREE P. BURNS, OWNER OF AUBREE P. BOUTIQUE

HARLON AND ELSIE KELLEY R

My parents have meant everything to me and are the foundation of what I am today. I was introduced to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by them, they taught me hard work was the path to success, and the love they showed me was unconditional and limitless. I watched how my parents treated others at their church and community during hardships and how they immediately would call to see if they could help and pray for them. They taught me what a responsible member of society looked like and how to be the best parent possible. Although I still question the phrase “This spanking is going to hurt me more than you.” Probably the only thing I ever questioned they said. I am so thankful for the parents God blessed me with and recognize any success I have is attributed to them.

— BLAKE KELLEY, OWNER OF KELLEY MORTGAGE LLC

SUSAN HELENA MOUNTS R

I am honored to call Susan Helena Mounts “Mom.” But she’s also known by many other names best friend, cheerleader, hero, and literal angel on earth. She is my dad’s high school sweetheart, “Sue,” “Nana” to her four grandchildren and to countless high school graduates, she remains “Mrs. Mounts,” a beloved educator in Williamson County for 30 years. Her work, dedication, and love of our community is already a beautiful legacy. Thank you, Mom, for being YOU and for loving so many of us the way only you can. Happy’s Mother’s Day!

WENDY LUKEN, TALENT ACQUISITION MANAGER, WILLIAMSON HEALTH

WILLIAM HARRY WURTH R

As I reflect on what Father’s Day means to me, I think about the lessons my father taught me. He passed away 10 years ago, but his legacy lives on with me. My father instilled in me the ethic of hard work, a love of family, and the belief that in life, every problem has a solution if you are patient enough to realize it. These lessons guide the way I live my life now and I am forever grateful for him.

JANE BRITT R

I have been so blessed to have Jane Britt as my mother and my children couldn't imagine a better grandmother. Her selflessness and sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. Memories of beach trips, market shopping, home-cooked meals, Sunday movie nights, countless sporting events, millions of phone calls, and tons of laughter are what I think of. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for homemaking greatly inspired me and played a pivotal role in launching my businesses, many with her involvement. We've tackled the business world's ups and downs together, and I couldn't imagine it any other way. She’s guided me through tough times, unwavering in love, and cheering me on in every achievement. She’s my best friend, and I adore her unabashedly. Mom, congratulations on reaching your 50th wedding anniversary milestone; you’re an absolute inspiration! Happy Mother’s Day!

DEBBIE MILLS R

My mom, in my humble opinion, is the most faith-grounded, hard-working woman I know! For the past 40 years, she has dedicated her life to serving the Lord and leaving a loving impression on everyone she meets. She is a singer of country gospel and has impressively taken her music career to the next level during the past five years recording songs and traveling to share her unique skill. In my biased opinion, her biggest accomplishment in life is being the most supportive, motivating, and encouraging mother a daughter could wish for. As an only child, you get very close to your mom, and she becomes your best friend. Over the past 33 years, she has not only influentially crafted me to be an independent woman, but also as someone who values hard work, confidence, and excellence. She is the best mom, and I am beyond blessed to call her my mom!

JUDITH BRIGHT

ARTISANAL JEWELRY

PHOTOS BY BRYAN FAY

For those who love some classy bling, want to enhance an outfit with a trendy piece, or simply love wearing stunning jewelry, then Judith Bright’s artisanal jewelry is for you. Crafted from the highest quality stones and metals, Judith Bright jewelry, from rings to earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, is meaningful handmade jewelry that is exquisite. With retail locations in Franklin and Nashville and an online store, the nationally recognized brand makes jewelry locally one piece at a time, nothing is mass-produced. As a small business in Middle Tennessee, Judith Bright is a 100% female-owned and run business that has continued to rock now for close to 20 years.

Judith Bright’s resume is highly varied and diverse, but one thing that remained consistent over the years was her love for jewelry which started at the young age of six when she discovered her mom’s jewelry box and all the treasures inside. “I have always loved jewelry. From my earliest memories of playing in my mom's jewelry box, I have always loved how jewelry is such an expression of someone's personality and their past,” Bright said. “People are wearing heirlooms and mixing them with newer pieces. No two looks are the same, it's a very individualistic expression and I'm fascinated by how people put things together. You know what Coco Chanel always said, ‘When I'm dressed I look in the mirror and take one piece off.’ Well, when I get dressed, I look in the mirror and put three more on. I love wearing jewelry!”

During her high school years, Bright devoted time volunteering as a candy striper, an experience that influenced her to pursue a career in nursing. After graduating from Vanderbilt University Nursing School, she ventured to Los Angeles, where she worked with AIDS patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Ending her nursing career, too exhausted and sad, she landed a job as a production assistant in the late 80s on Growing Pains, the complete opposite of sad, but still exhausting.

In the early 90s, Bright married and finally got serious about work after landing her wonder job with Quincy Jones where she later became the President of Jones’ publishing company. “I absolutely adored working for Quincy. I adored music publishing, which is what I was doing. I was managing and licensing his catalog,” Bright said. During the late 90s, Bright had two sons with the third son arriving in 2001. Shortly after baby number three was born, Bright left Quincy Jones to set out and chase her dream of becoming a jewelry designer.

To help bring this dream to fruition, Bright moved her family to Florence, Italy, in 2003 so she could take jewelry-making classes and learn from the best. “We chose Italy because we knew they loved children. They would whisk my little toe-head boys up and take them to the kitchen and I never saw them until after dinner,” said Bright. “And I was able to find a jewelry school where I took private silversmithing and wax carving lessons. It wasn't until I started making jewelry and taking those classes in Florence when I’d come back home and sit for hours trying to create what was to become my signature style, that I realized I’d never been happier.”

After the gap year in Italy, Bright moved her family to Nashville where she began to lay the groundwork for her dream business. A few years later in 2007, after setting up her Judith Bright jewelry business, spending countless hours sketching designs, and creating jewelry, Bright launched JUDITHBRIGHT.COM. As Bright explained, “I started my business at age 40. I have always believed it is never too late to do something that you are passionate about. Sometimes the timing is not right when you are younger and you need to go through some life before you can settle into that thing that makes your heart happy.”

13 MAY – JUNE 2024 |

It was almost 20 years after Bright’s Vanderbilt days when she started her girlfriends' grassroots marketing with Nashville moms opening their doors and inviting all their friends to preview her jewelry. “You know it was amazing. I started out making jewelry for friends and family and when I was out wearing my jewelry people would always ask me what it was. I started doing trunk shows and people embraced me with open arms. One thing led to another, and the glass slipper finally fit,” Bright said.

With the popularity of her brand growing, Bright’s jewelry appeared in television programs Gossip Girls, Samanta Who?, and The New Adventures of Old Christine. It became obvious the timing was now right for Bright to think about a storefront and she opened her Flagship Store in The Mall at Green Hills in 2010. “Something very important to us is that customers, when they come in, feel welcomed, at home, and at ease so anyone can come in and buy something special. We love helping our customers find whatever they're looking for. They may come in thinking they are looking for one thing and then we help them find a piece that is even more meaningful,” Bright commented. That same year her jewelry also appeared in movies The Back-up Plan on Jennifer Lopez and The Rebound on Catherine ZetaJones adding prominence to Bright’s brand image.

14 | MUSIC CITY PUBLICATIONS INC.

As Bright’s business continued to blossom, she opened a store in Atlanta in 2012 and in 2017 moved that store to a space three times larger. In 2014, the Judith Bright store made the move from Green Hills to a house in the 12 South neighborhood in Nashville and this past February celebrated 10 years at that location, a monumental achievement. During the pandemic, Bright made the tough decision to say goodbye to the Atlanta store but persevered and in 2020 opened a store in The Factory at Franklin with the newest location, an open studio concept, located in the Nations neighborhood at L & L Market in West Nashville.

What sets Judith Bright jewelry apart is the extensive collection of gemstones available, more than any other brand that Bright is aware of. These highquality gemstones are meticulously chosen from reputable suppliers across the globe and no two stones are alike rendering each piece truly unique. Whether customers opt for online purchases or visit a physical store, they can learn the meaning of each gemstone to help them pick a stone that is special to them or the person they are gifting. For instance, amethyst is often associated with inner peace, citrine with prosperity, and tourmaline with unconditional love there is a gemstone for nearly every mood or sentiment.

The components used in the designs are purchased only in the United States and include 14k gold-filled and sterling silver metals. Bright uses these metals because they provide the highest quality at the most affordable price. Bright’s mission when she started the company was to create beautiful handmade jewelry that was also affordable and inclusive so anyone could come in, buy something special, and leave with something that had meaning to them customers can even have a custom piece made on the spot. Bright noted, “Our jewelry is made with you in mind, one piece at a time.”

15 MAY – JUNE 2024 |

As Bright continues to expand her jewelry empire, give back to the community, and invest in her employees, Judith Bright has earned noteworthy accolades. The brand has been voted Best Handmade Jewelry, repeatedly voted Top 3 Jewelry Stores in Nashville, and nominated as one of the best places to work in Music City. On a personal level, Bright has been recognized as a Nashville Business Journal Woman of Influence and Most Admired CEO. She serves on the Board of the Entrepreneur Center and The Entrepreneur’s Organization as well as the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing Dean’s Advisory Board. Furthermore, drawing on her nursing expertise, she recently achieved certification as an End-of-Life Doula and dedicates time to volunteering at Alive Hospice, a testament to her servant's heart. n

As a distinguished salon, offering masterful hairstylists capable of crafting the perfect cut and color to estheticians with a keen eye for skincare, their experts stay abreast of the latest trends and techniques promising clients an unparalleled experience.

Lora Powell, founder and owner of Salon Blonde, has successful salons in Columbia and Spring Hill. At Salon Blonde, their aim is not only to enhance your beauty during your salon visit but also to evoke a sense of beauty within you. They prioritize your experience from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave aiming to provide the highest level of service possible. Powell carefully selects and hires stylists with a dedicated career mindset, exemplifying exceptional character and a passionate commitment to the art of hairdressing. Additionally, Salon Blonde aligns itself with forward-thinking companies in the beauty industry and places a strong emphasis on continuing education from the best in the industry.

Powell began her career in cosmetology in high school. She then worked her way through college as a stylist, earning her bachelor's degree in sociology. Following her move to Nashville with her husband, a songwriter, Powell integrated into the city’s vibrant music scene where her talents as a stylist flourished. Transitioning into the realm of education, she became an Educational Consultant for a hair color company under the L’oreal brand, providing training programs for fellow stylists. Although she had experienced success in this industry, she couldn’t shake the dissatisfaction with how many salons treated their staff. Witnessing talented stylists undervalued and overworked, she saw an opportunity to do things differently.

With her wealth of experience and expertise, Powell felt compelled to embark on a new venture the establishment of her own salon. "It definitely was a calling from the Lord," Powell reflected, "even though I struggled with the idea for a few years, I finally gave in, trusted God, and opened the salon in Spring Hill." This leap of faith proved to be transformative as Powell's salon quickly became a hallmark of excellence in the community, reflecting her unwavering commitment to her craft and her deep-rooted faith guiding every step of her journey.

Since its inception in 2008, Salon Blonde has evolved from a solo endeavor to a thriving establishment with a staff of over 40. Their mission is to create a beautiful and fruitful life for their staff by creating a beautiful experience for their guests. “We have had success because we focus on the success of our staff, and their success and happiness is passed along through a beautiful experience for our guests,” said Powell.

Salon Blonde emphasizes growing professionalism in the industry, with the result of providing a more exclusive and luxurious experience for their clients, and their dedicated staff sees no ceiling for their career path. This offers hairstylists the chance for constant growth by continually achieving their goals and moving on to the next level, while it offers their guests the opportunity to choose the level of expertise they prefer at a price that is compatible with their desires.

Salon Blonde South, which opened in December 2021 in Columbia, is the perfect example of a possible career path for stylists to embark on. Lauren Mosley, who has worked at Salon Blonde for 10 years, is the co-owner with Powell of the Columbia salon, which showcases a chic industrial vibe. “Lauren started at the bottom as an associate and worked her way up into leadership. She then became a shareholder in the Columbia location and runs that salon, but that's not where we have her stopping as she still has goals she wants to achieve. It's just one of the ways we can professionalize this industry and create a career path for our staff,” Powell explained.

The Spring Hill and Columbia locations abide by the same mission statement and values and offer high-quality services with identical pricing. Salon Blonde’s services include hair design and styling, face, skin, and waxing services, as well as luxury hair extension services. One of their specialties is color services, specifically blonding. Salon Blonde focuses on healthy blonding. “That's something that I'm very proud of. All our stylists, at any level, can blonde hair in a healthy manner. It doesn’t matter how long your hair is, we are going to take care of the integrity of the hair,” said Mosely.

20 | MUSIC CITY PUBLICATIONS INC.

Additionally, the stylists are highly skilled in helping clients select a hairstyle that suits their preferences and aligns seamlessly with their lifestyle. Whether a client is looking for a precision cut, which is a structured hairstyle with clearly defined lines and a well-maintained shape, or the result of a design cut which is more individualistic, with a focus on creating a style that complements the client's facial features, lifestyle, and fashion preferences, the stylists at Salon Blonde can assist. Mosley added, “We do very thorough consultations to understand the guests’ needs, which leads us to give better haircuts that are customized, it’s not a one-size-fits-all.”

Salon Blonde has an amazing bridal team offering a stress-free experience on your big day as well as an extension team that does beautiful luxury extensions offering an in-house line of extensions that are made using the highest quality of natural human hair. Furthermore, licensed aestheticians are at each location offering waxing services, facials, brow tinting and lamination, and lash tinting and lifting. MOTHERʼS DAY BRUNCH at Home

It is a blessing to celebrate Mother's Day with your mom or anyone who is that special person in your life. It is a treat to honor those women who care for us and are always there when we need them. Brunch on Mother's Day Sunday or perhaps the Saturday before is a wonderful way to show your love and appreciation.

Just before your guests arrive for brunch, pour the egg mixture over the pie crust filled with cheese and bacon and bake. Top your French bread with the bruschetta spread and parmesan and broil. Stir the 5-cup salad and place in small fruit bowls. Place the lemon loaf on dessert plates and add a dollop of lemon curd. Serve with your favorite tea punch or make an easy mimosa, an inexpensive Prosecco and orange juice make the perfect brunch libation.

I always say, don't sweat the small stuff, but the sweetness is all in the details. Entertaining in your home gives your gift of brunch such a personal touch.  Bring out the good china and enjoy your dining room. A few flowers from the grocery will perfectly elevate your table and set the mood.

Summer Bruschetta

INGREDIENTS

Half a loaf of French bread, sliced

1-2 jars of Stonewall Kitchen Tomato Herb Bruschetta Spread

5-6 oz of freshly grated parmesan cheese

INSTRUCTIONS

Lightly toast the French bread on both sides. Place one or two spoonfuls of the Tomato Herb Bruschetta Spread on toasted slices. Top with parmesan cheese and broil in the oven until the cheese is melted and the tomato spread is bubbly.

Glazed Lemon Loaf with Lemon Curd

This Stonewall Kitchen Lemon Pound Cake is a treat on every occasion. Its zesty lemon flavor is not too tart and not too sweet. Topped with a tangy lemon glaze, it’s the perfect dessert. It’s easy to make with a few items from your pantry butter, eggs, lemon zest, milk, and fresh lemon juice. It takes a few minutes to make and 45-55 minutes to bake. Definitely try it with the Stonewall Kitchen Lemon Curd!

Stop by my shop, Amy Montgomery Home, and explore the pantry filled with ingredients to help you pull together this homemade brunch. The tomato bruschetta spread is a shop favorite and the lemon loaf is a classic. The lemon curd is one of our bestsellers followed by our delicious drink mixers and pepper jellies. We look forward to helping you pull together all those details to make Mother's Day memorable.

THE BEAUTY OF DECORATING WITH ANTIQUES

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE LINEN DUCK

Antique

furniture has the incredible power to add character and charm to any space. Whether you live in a contemporary apartment or a traditional home, incorporating antique pieces can instantly elevate the overall aesthetic and create a unique atmosphere. One of the key advantages of using antique furniture is that it brings a distinct sense of history and storytelling to your space adding a personalized touch.

Every antique piece has its own story to tell, whether it is the hand-carved details on a vintage dining table or the worn leather upholstery on a classic Chesterfield sofa. Those stories add a sense of sophistication to any room. Whether you are a seasoned collector or just starting to explore the world of antiques, here are a few valuable tips on how to successfully incorporate antique furniture into your interior design scheme.

Start With a Vision

When embarking on the journey of shopping for antique pieces, it is important to begin with a vision in mind. Having a clear idea of your desired interior design style will serve as a guiding compass throughout the selection process. The world of antique furniture offers a multitude of options, each with its unique charm and character. By knowing your preferred aesthetic, whether it leans towards the elegant and ornate French provincial, the rustic and simplistic primitive, or the sleek and glamorous art deco, you can ensure that the antique pieces you choose will seamlessly blend into your overall decor. A well-defined vision for your space not only assists you in finding the perfect antique furniture but also ensures a cohesive and harmonious look and feel for your home.

Mix and Match

Mixing antique furniture with modern or contemporary pieces can result in a stunningly unique and charming space. Don't be afraid to experiment and juxtapose different styles, as this allows for the creation of an eclectic atmosphere that is truly one-of-a-kind. This blending of the past and present creates a visually interesting and dynamic aesthetic that is sure to captivate anyone who enters the room. Additionally, layering different eras and design influences adds depth and complexity to your space, making it more visually captivating. So, embrace the mix-and-match approach and let your creativity run wild.

31 MAY – JUNE 2024 |

Create Balance with a Focal Piece

To create balance in the design of your room, it can be helpful to use antique furniture as statement pieces. By selecting a few standout items, such as a vintage cabinet, classic table, or charming sideboard, you can create focal points that add character and charm to the overall design. These unique and beautiful pieces will not only catch the eye but also help to balance the look of the room. When choosing your statement piece, it is important to consider the size of each piece of furniture and ensure that it fits well within the space. Additionally, the chosen item should complement the other furniture and decor to create a cohesive and balanced aesthetic.

Use Antiques to Accessorize

Adding antiques doesn't always mean using furnishings. By strategically placing antique accessories throughout your space, you can maintain the comfort and functionality of new furnishings, while still adding the charm and beauty of antique and vintage items. For instance, consider adding antique artwork, books, lamps, rugs, and textiles that enhance your existing color palette. By selecting hues that harmonize with your current wood tones, upholstery, and finishes, you can seamlessly integrate old and new elements into your home, resulting in a charming and visually appealing space. Whether you opt for a vintage painting that adds a pop of color to your living room or a collection of antique books displayed on a shelf, using antiques as accessories is a wonderful way to infuse your home with history and style.

Embrace Imperfections

When decorating your living space with antique furniture, it is important to remember that perfection is not the goal. The imperfections and signs of wear and tear that come with these pieces should be embraced rather than concealed. Antique furniture has a unique charm that tells a story of its own, and by accepting and highlighting these imperfections, you can add character and authenticity to your home.

Antique furniture holds a timeless beauty that is unmatched by modern pieces. The attention to detail and meticulous construction can be seen in the intricate carvings, beautiful inlays, and fine finishes. Incorporating antique pieces into your design allows you to create a unique and personalized space. By mixing old and new, you can achieve a balance that showcases your taste and style. Whether you choose to curate a collection of antique furniture or sprinkle a few select pieces throughout your home, each item will add character and depth to your overall design.

ALTERNATIVE WHEN CHANGES IN FAMILY SIZE OR LIFESTYLE PREFERENCES

NECESSITATE ADJUSTMENTS TO YOUR LIVING SPACE.

A Murphy bed, also known as a wall bed or pull-down bed, offers a clever space-saving solution and has an interesting history. It was invented by William Lawrence Murphy, an American entrepreneur while he was living in a one-room apartment in San Francisco during the late 19th century. At that time, social norms frowned upon entertaining guests in the bedroom. Murphy, who was courting an opera singer, sought to create a more inviting space for her visits, however, space was limited. To solve this problem, Murphy developed the idea of a bed that could be folded up into a wall or cabinet when not in use.

Fast forward when Billy Simon, the visionary founder and co-owner of Nashville Murphy Beds, embarked on a path that intertwined his artistic background with the realm of craftsmanship. In the early 1980s, Simon carved out a noteworthy career as a songwriter. However, in the early 2000s when free music downloading shook the music industry, Simon sought alternative avenues to supplement his income.

37 MAY – JUNE 2024 |

Amid Simon’s quest for employment, memories of Murphy beds featured in sitcoms from his youth resurfaced in his mind. The notion of a space-saving yet stylish bedding solution intrigued him, and he began his search across Nashville to find them. It didn't take long for him to notice the absence of Murphy beds within traditional furniture stores, sparking an idea that would reshape his path.

Simon took the initiative to establish a workshop in his backyard marking the pivotal moment when he transformed from seeker to creator and crafted his very first Murphy bed. The transformation was profound, not just in a practical sense, but also as a catalyst for an emerging business. It was in 2014, while working with a trusted friend and co-worker, Pete Strayer, that the two of them began laying out a business plan for Nashville Murphy Beds, during coffee breaks.

Word of Simon’s innovative creations began to spread, driven by the genuine interest and curiosity of his friends. Requests for his unique beds started pouring in as people’s needs for spare bedrooms were being solved consistently by their stylish quality Murphy bed solutions. A few years later in 2019, another trusted friend, Allan Hicks, on a similar path was leaving his corporate past behind for the scent of sawdust and fulfillment of craftsmanship. With his business acumen, Hicks joined forces to help take Nashville Murphy Beds to the next level. Today, Simon remains a co-owner of Nashville Murphy Beds but is no longer actively engaged in its day-to-day operations.

Presently, the business moves forward with its dedicated team of skilled craftsmen, Allan Hicks, CEO and co-owner, Ethan DuBois, and Lucas Grimaud who all share a profound love for woodworking. Their creations are more than just beds; they are top-notch, handcrafted functional solutions that optimize room space and allow customers to infuse their unique style into each design. “Right now we are seeing a trend. We have a lot of people calling us for a Murphy bed in the Nashville area and we are grateful to be able to provide a solution for them,” Hicks said.

The team works with clients to select the best size bed, twin up to a king for the space, blending inventive design with personalized elements, such as tailored color schemes, stains, and trim choices, along with versatile features like cabinets, shelves, drawers, and fold-out desks. Every piece is carefully crafted from authentic wood with great attention to detail.

“The entire process is custom, from the free consultation to the furniture designs and colors. One of our popular styles is a Murphy Bed with symmetrical shelves on each side, but from order to finish it is approximately three weeks for a bed alone and five to six weeks if cabinets or a desk is included,” explained Hicks.

Nashville Murphy Beds provides a brilliant answer for maximizing space during any home update without compromising comfort. They continue to solve space challenges for their customers by better utilizing space and helping homeowners tailor their living space to better suit their lifestyle preferences with an aesthetic appeal. DR. COLIN LOONEY, M.D. BRINGS AWARENESS TO MENTAL HEALTH IN SPORTS

MEDICINE

InMay, we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, and although the conversation about the importance of mental health continues to evolve, areas remain in which the issue is rarely discussed. With years of experience in the field, Dr. Colin Looney, sports medicine physician and orthopaedic surgeon at Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee, hopes to bring awareness to the issue in sports medicine. “In the past, one of the biggest weaknesses in the sports medicine field was not understanding the impact of mental health on athletic performance,” said Dr. Looney. “Sports medicine providers are learning to recognize the role they play in athletes’ lives. It is critical to integrate mental health aspects into recovery and treat the whole patient.”

42 | MUSIC CITY PUBLICATIONS INC.
GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!

Burnout and injury are the most common causes of mental health issues among athletes. This can be especially problematic for younger athletes. “Studies show that children who specialize in one sport from a very young age are less likely to earn collegiate-level scholarships or continue that sport long-term,” said Dr. Looney.

One of the first signs of burnout can often be “mild anhedonia,” the inability to find joy in something that a person previously loved. If coaches, parents, or teammates begin to notice a change in an athlete’s behavior or feelings of unhappiness, that athlete may be experiencing burnout in that sport. To avoid burnout, Dr. Looney suggests that athletes engage in multiple sports throughout the year. Being a multi-sport athlete can also reduce the risk of overuse injuries which can lead to mental health issues.

Symptoms of anxiety and depression or substance abuse issues are potential consequences of any major athletic injury. “For a devoted athlete, tearing an ACL is not just an injury to a ligament, it is an insult to that person’s self-worth,” said Dr. Looney. About 40% of ACL injury patients experience an element of major depressive disorder, and 50% of athletes with shoulder injuries experience symptoms of depression or anxiety.

Because athletes associate so much of their identity with the sport they play, a careeraltering injury can have a largely negative effect on their mental health. Not only do depression and anxiety occur more commonly after an injury, but studies also show that athletes who are depressed are more likely to get injured or burnout. “When I have a patient who has experienced a traumatic athletic injury, I make sure to acknowledge their situation, assure them it is normal to be upset, depressed, or angry, and encourage them to confide in others,” said Dr. Looney. “It should be normal to discuss your mental state with your provider so that they can provide the best treatment.”

Being faced with a long road to recovery can be daunting and overwhelming. Dr. Looney offers four helpful tips for athletes to maintain mental health after an injury:

1

Keep your objectives during recovery small. By setting small, obtainable recovery goals, the end results seem more attainable. Set weekly objectives, create a checklist, or place reminder sticky notes on a bathroom mirror to help track progress.

Know that you are not alone: A team is helping your recovery. Recovery is a team effort. An injured athlete may see an athletic trainer and/or physical therapist multiple times a week. Be sure you are talking with them, as well as with your family, close peers, and coaches.

2

Remember that your medical providers are ready to help. We are available. Athletes should be aware that providers are available and ready to help them when needed. Sports medicine physicians should establish an open line of communication and encourage athletes to contact them as needed.

3

Practice good communication.

4

“None of it works if we don’t communicate both ways,” said Dr. Looney. “It’s a twoway street, but the athlete must first acknowledge there’s a problem and be willing to talk with us.”

In some cases, an athlete may also benefit from speaking with a licensed sports psychologist.

“Mental health plays a key role in athletic performance and recovery. As providers, we must continue to communicate with psychologists and psychiatrists so that we have the tools and ability to act quickly when needed,” concluded Dr. Looney. n

STRETCHING Simplified

MAINTAINING MOBILITY

Doyou incorporate stretching into your exercise routine? When clients are initially asked this question at Climb Performance Therapies, they give all the reasons of why they do not stretch. They say things like, “I do not have time,” “I hate stretching”, or “I have no idea what stretches to do.” Sound familiar?

Even though stretching can easily be overlooked by most people, it is an essential aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In our current culture, we spend so much time sitting in front of a screen for work, school, or entertainment. Our bodies adapt to this consistent seated position which then leads to poor posture and shortened muscles throughout the body. If we do not stretch and strengthen properly to counteract the effects of our sitting culture, pain and stiffness creep in. We definitely do not have time for that!

If we take a preventative approach and incorporate a couple of stretches throughout our week, we can enjoy the benefits and avoid the aches and pains. We may not be able to change the amount of time we are on a computer at work or school, but we can make some simple changes to maintain good mobility for our daily activities. So, who is with me? Let’s look more in-depth at the benefits of stretching for both the mind and body.

AS WE PERFORM STRETCHES, WE ALSO CONNECT TO OUR BREATHING WHICH CAN HELP OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM GET OUT OF THE FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT MODE AND INTO REST AND DIGEST MODE.

Reduced Stress

Let’s face it, life is full of daily stressors! How we respond to the stress of this world can directly affect our body and mindset. Having outlets, such as stretching, can help reduce stress. When we take the time to slow down and connect with our bodies, we also become grounded and aware of our emotions. As we perform stretches, we also connect to our breathing which can help our nervous system get out of the fight-or-flight mode and into rest and digest mode.

Improved Posture

In our everyday lives, it is so easy to get into a slumped posture after hours of working on a computer. I caught myself several times while typing this article! If we stay in that position over time, it can have a negative strain on our spine. Stretching can help protect us from the stress our spine goes through daily. Taking time to stretch out the chest and extend throughout our spine with safe and easy movements can help us maintain a better posture. The more upright we are during the day the less likely we are to put strain on our joints.

48 | MUSIC CITY PUBLICATIONS INC.

Maintained Flexibility

As we age our flexibility tends to decrease. This makes it harder to go up and down stairs, climb into bed, get dressed in the morning, and perform regular daily activities that once were not an issue. Preventative activities, such as stretching can decrease the likelihood of this being a part of your story as you age. Light hip, shoulder, and back exercises are the key to maintaining mobility as we age!

Injury and Pain Prevention

Where do you have some undesirable aches and pains? Most of our clients come to us with acute pain or injury that has no specific cause. Most of this can be prevented by specific stretches prescribed to each unique individual case. If we have the proper range of motion our joints stay healthy and lubricated to keep us at peak performance levels for sports, playing with grandkids, enjoying another round of golf, or tending to your garden.

So … who is ready to start stretching now?! Stretching does not have to be a 30-minute, complicated routine. As Lydia Fowler, co-founder and dietitian for Climb stated in the last issue, our word of the year is to SIMPLIFY. We started with simplifying our environment. Now let’s take that approach with stretching. Stretching can be simplified to fit your needs and schedule.

How to incorporate stretching regularly into your life.

Start Small: Find 1-2 stretches to add to your morning routine. Take just 3-5 minutes to perform the stretches for 5-10 repetitions through your full range of motion. You do not have to hold the stretch for any length of time, just work through your breath. Start with a deep inhale, then go into a stretch as you fully exhale. Inhale as you return to the starting point and go again!

Stand Often: If you do not know what stretches to begin with, that is ok. Simply taking time to stand up a couple of times throughout the day is a perfect start. It is amazing how that simple change can make you feel so much better all day.

Ask for Help: If you are already dealing with aches and pain, ask a professional for assistance. At Climb, once we know what a day looks like for our clients we can educate them on the best course of action. What is good for one person may not be best for another and we take a very personalized approach to healthcare option solutions.

Remember, it is important to note that consistency and proper technique are key when incorporating stretching into your routine. It’s a warm, summer day in Hohenwald, Tennessee, and Flora, age 40, stands under the shade of a tree enjoying her favorite food: watermelon. Since it is watermelon season, the scene would be unremarkable except for the fact that Flora stands eight feet six inches and is an African elephant. Born in the wild, orphaned at two, and raised in an American circus, Flora has found her forever home in the hills, fields, and forests of a very special place, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Here, for the first time in her life, Flora has the freedom of choice, deciding for herself what she wants to do and when she wants to do it. Further, unlike in her circus days, she is no longer alone. Three other African elephants, Nosey, Sukari, and Tange, share the vast, protected enclosures with her. Tange, in particular, has become Flora’s pachyderm pal, the two often expressing affection by entwining trunks and caressing.

The sight of two elephants displaying tenderness for each other encapsulates the primary mission of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) accredited Elephant Sanctuary: to ensure not just the physical well-being of these highly intelligent and social creatures but provide the conditions for their emotional needs as well. Each animal receives individualized care from a dedicated staff of expert veterinarians and trained volunteers, but not even the best care in the world can provide the critical companionship that elephants derive from being a part of a herd. Only other elephants can do that. For this reason, The Elephant Sanctuary is a true sanctuary and closed to the public.

The four African and five Asian elephants who live on these 3,060 acres replete with heated barns, solar water pumps, spring-fed lakes, and three separate habitats do so without the distractions of crowds and the noise of tour buses. These small herds are safe and free to roam the varied landscape as they wish giving them the freedom they deserve.

The Elephant Sanctuary’s mission doesn’t stop with providing for the elephants. The second part of the mission is increasing public knowledge. For this, there is the wonderful Elephant Discovery Center, an education destination for all things elephant in downtown Hohenwald. Here, visitors can learn about elephants' complex role in their ecosystems and about their conversation and care through engaging, self-guided exhibits like the training wall and the elephant vocalization podiums as hands-on activities.

Even though it is a true sanctuary, anyone can view the sanctuary’s current nine residents on the EleCam, a system of solar-powered cameras that locate and monitor the elephants and provide an ideal opportunity for distance learning while maintaining the elephants’ need for tranquility. These EleCams allow for distance learning and for The Elephant Sanctuary to make an impact far beyond Middle Tennessee. “In 2021 the education team was able to reach more than 14,000 people and did more than 300 programs to reach students and adults in more than 35 states and 10 countries,” says Laura Roddy, Education Manager. “The education team is leading programs daily on different online platforms.”

But, of course, the stars of the show are the elephants themselves, even if only seen on a screen. “My favorite thing about The Elephant Sanctuary is how unique each elephant is as an individual,” Roddy says. “Some of them will choose to be social. Some will spend their days pushing down trees. Some are out swimming in the ponds and lakes provided for them. I encourage everyone to visit elephants.com and look at the different biographies to get to know the elephants because they all are so special.”

Chuck Graves, a volunteer at the Sanctuary since 2013, would no doubt agree. “I have always had an affinity for elephants,” he says, “and have been aware of The Sanctuary since its founding in 1995.”

As for the volunteering itself, Graves explains there are two types. “Work at the Discovery Center or on The Sanctuary grounds themselves. I have cleared fences, pulled weeds, cut bamboo, and painted barns. This work frees up the caregivers to focus on the elephants themselves.”

The other type of volunteering is to become an EleAmbassador, a nationwide network of volunteers trained by The Sanctuary to represent the elephants in their local communities. Graves is one as well. “As part of my EleAmbassador work, I have manned booths at local events and helped children make enrichment items for the elephants like hay-filled, elephant burritos.”

— LORAN DOSEN, VOLUNTEER

In 2001, Loran Dosen had a feeding encounter with an elephant at a North African zoo that made her question the needs and care of elephants in zoos and circuses.

“I started to learn more about the vital role of elephants in their natural habitat as a keystone species, the conservation challenges they face in the wild, and organizations working to protect them worldwide,” she said. After moving to Franklin, Dosen became a volunteer to share her respect and hope for the species existing both in the wild and in captivity. She has been volunteering at The Sanctuary for three years and is also an EleAmbassador, where she offers presentations to groups to share her passion and help educate people about elephants. Dosen explained, “The Elephant Sanctuary was the perfect place for me to actively participate in expressing appreciation for these extraordinary largest living land animals, promoting awareness of their vital role as a keystone species, and ensuring hope for the safety and longevity of the species.”

EDIE

Born in the wilderness of Africa in 1983, Edie was taken from her natural habitat and brought to the United States as a young calf. For over a decade, she served as the solitary elephant attraction, providing rides at a youth camp in Texas. In 2002, she found a new home at Zoo Knoxville, where she joined African elephants Jana and Tonka.

In 2022, Zoo Knoxville decided to relocate Edie, Jana, and Tonka to ensure their lifelong care and social needs. Edie was the second elephant from the zoo to be moved to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. The first was Jana, a 43-year-old female, who was transferred in May 2023. Sadly, Jana's health declined rapidly, and she passed away in October that same year.

Donna, formerly known as Eloise, was captured at the age of two from her natural habitat and brought to the United States. She was acquired by the Audubon Zoo in 1982 and spent eight years there before arriving at the Oakland Zoo in California in 1990. At Oakland Zoo, she found companionship with African male elephant Osh, as well as African females M'Dunda and Lisa.

Sadly, Donna lost her dear companions, M’Dunda in 2019 and Lisa in 2023, leaving her alone. Oakland Zoo, recognizing the vital role of social bonds in elephant well-being, diligently sought the best solution for Donna. Ultimately, they decided to grant her the opportunity to spend her remaining years at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, where she could find companionship among other female African elephants of similar age.

Donna's arrival marked her transition as the Sanctuary's 32nd elephant resident. She stands out with her long legs, slender face, a luxuriant tail of hair, and a distinctive arch in her back. Her majestic stature is complemented by her weight of over 8,500 pounds and a towering height of nine feet, one inch. Donna’s demeanor exudes the dominance typical of African elephants, often displaying natural behaviors like ear flaring and carrying her trunk high.

In her daily routines, Donna can be seen reveling in mud wallows, gracefully navigating her natural surroundings, and even lugging a tire she brought from California. While she occasionally wanders her expansive habitat alone, she eagerly returns to engage with her companions Flora, Tange, and Sukari.

She is known for her quick movements and unique gait, raising her left front leg high and swinging it across to the right, and often exhibits the unique behavior of standing with her hind legs crossed. Edie is a very social elephant frequently engaging with her companions and she enjoys foraging in her habitat. n
