Mill, which uses it to irrigate coffee and other crops. Because a large percentage of wells sunk in West Maui are contaminated with pesticides, the county has found itself relying on a couple million gallons of Honokohau water every day. And even without upcoming expansion projects, the Maui Land & Pineapple Co. (ML&P) uses about two mgd of Honokohau water to irrigate its Kapalua pineapple crops and golf courses. With resort construction and expansion all but inevitable, demand for Honokohau water will only increase. Despite heavy losses following Sept. 11—the most recent annual report for the company’s resort division shows profits fell from $19.8 million in 2001 to a mere $2.8 million in 2002—ML&P sees great things in its future. Right now, Maui Land is moving forward with its plans to expand the Kapalua Resort. It’s called Kapalua Mauka. The company is adding 925 acres to its resort—the largest portion of which will include “up to 690 residential units”—many of which will sell for upwards of $1 million. In addition, the company may expand its current 18-hole Village Golf Course to 27 holes. The company expects to take at least 10 years to finish the project. Unless something is done to begin returning water to the Honokohau, the last of the taro farms will by long gone by the time Maui Land & Pineapple gets its million-dollar homes and golf course.

Water Drainage Is this the end of the Honokohau Stream? “The water levels are inconsistent,” said one former taro farmer who spent six years in the Honokohau. “The water level gets low, and then it gets warm. That makes the plants susceptible to Loli disease. In the old days whole villages would show up to help clean the land. But there’s no longer any konahiki [chief] to keep the people together.” Those few farmers who remain are trying to grow other crops—tea leaves, ginger, anything that can survive on such inconsistent water levels. The low water levels are nothing new. Because of a drainage ditch built a century ago about 800 feet upstream that was used to irrigate Pioneer and Baldwin agricultural fields, there is virtually no longer any flow downstream, according to a recent United States Geological Survey (USGS) report. “The Honokohau Ditch has a significant effect on the flow in the Honokohau Stream,” concluded the July, 2003 report by Richard A. Fontaine. “Downstream from the diversion dam there is no flow in the stream 91.2 percent of the time, except for the minor amount of leakage taking place through the dam.” Much of the diverted water—up to 12 million gallons per day (mgd)—still flows to the Pioneer
You’d think that water wouldn’t be an issue for an island with at least 2,000 miles of ocean in every direction. But Maui’s different. For instance, take the Honokohau Valley in West Maui. It was once the breadbasket of old Hawaii. Taro farms bloomed there. Armies encamped there. In the 1730s, forces commanded by two feuding sons of King Kekaulike fought there. Thousands died on the land now occupied by golf courses and resort villas. It was all because of the water. Pu’u Kukui is one of the rainiest spots on Earth, and its 355 inches of annual rainfall feeds the Honokohau Stream, the largest perennial waterway in West Maui. The stream ran so deep and fast on its way to the ocean it became West Maui’s preeminent water source. The water’s still there, but today it goes to pineapple fields, hotels and golf courses. The taro farms? They went dry. There used to be 2,000 taro patches in the Honokohau Valley. Now there are less than a dozen families trying to farm the crop that once covered Maui like a blanket.

Specifically, Molina wants to preserve “Maui County’s night sky and wildlife habitat without compromising public safety.” Wow. Lighting regulations. You know, in other places the only thing that regulates lighting is the wattage of the bulb.

THURSDAY, NOV. 6 Today’s edition of the Lahaina News provides a clear-cut, if somewhat disheartening, Media Watch. It’s the front-page story “Mayor’s advisory panel discusses West Maui issues.” Written by News contributing writer Walter Chihara, the story is an account of a recent West Maui Advisory Committee meeting. Created by Mayor Alan Arakawa, the panel consists of nine volunteers from the community who meet monthly to discuss West Maui issues with local government officials and members of the public. The problem with the story is that Chihara is a committee member. That’s bad enough—can the public get the true and balanced story of a county council meeting if one of the councilmembers reports on it for the local paper? But Chihara made things worse by not disclosing his membership, leaving the reader with the impression that he was just a reporter sitting in the back of the room during the meeting, rather than an active participant. Chihara may have the best of intentions in wanting to help his community in every way possible, but he’s got to make a choice: stay on the panel and have someone

Yup, it’s all in Case’s release how the terrible, terrible snake is already cutting a huge swath through… oh, wait—it’s not actually here… yet… But it will be! Mark my words, people! Snakes can swim! They can swim real good… God, I need a life.

And the Navy’s being vague about whether they’ll play any role in cleaning the rest, despite the group Project Kaho’olawe ‘Ohana’s insistence that the Navy promised to scrub the whole rock. In fact, the whole future of the island is up in the air. The State of Hawaii formally takes possession next week, but after that, who knows? Do the indigenous Hawaiian people get it? If so, what would they do with it? There’s little vegetation anywhere and no fresh water. It’s about as

The Federal Communications Commission ruled in October that the “F word,” used as an adjective with the “ing” ending by U2 singer Bono during the live telecast of the Golden Globe awards ceremony in January, is not obscene language because Bono was not using it sexually but rather to enhance the word “brilliant.” And two weeks later, Texas’s 3rd Court of Appeals ruled that making the well-known middle-finger gesture is not illegal because it is not so provocative these days as to incite immediate violence.
In Knoxville, Tenn., in September, Thomas Martin McGouey, 51, apparently set on committing suicide, left a note and painted a bull’s-eye on his body before arranging a standoff in which he pointed a gun at police officers so they would kill him in self-defense. McGouey’s scheme failed because Knox County sheriff’s deputies, who fired 28 shots at him, missed with 27 and only grazed his shoulder with the other.
SO HARD TO BE A STUDENT NOWADAYS Brandon Kivi, 15, was suspended from Caney Creek High (Conroe, Texas) in October for possibly saving the life of his girlfriend (a fellow classmate) by lending her his asthma inhaler after she had misplaced hers; that was delivery of a dangerous drug. And Raylee Montgomery, 13, was suspended from school in Duncanville, Texas, in September when her shirttail became untucked, a violation of the dress code (raising the number of dress-code-caused suspensions in her 3,500-student school to more than 700 in just five weeks).
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS In April, community activists and other volunteers established a “safe injection site” in Vancouver, British Columbia, so that addicts can bring their heroin, crystal meth or cocaine, and prepare and inject it with clean equipment and in an environment free of hassling by police, who have been reluctant to close the site down. Often, there is a volunteer registered nurse on duty to provide advice on injection technique.
UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Thailand’s leading massage-parlor/prostitution entrepreneur, Chuwit Kamolvisit, reacted with outrage when he was charged this summer in connection with two criminal cases because, he said, he has paid police the equivalent of US$2.5 million in bribes to get immunity. Mr. Chuwit called a series of press conferences in July, at which he released information on whom he had been bribing and who some of his customers were, and in September, he announced he would form a new political party to put an end to Thailand’s culture of official corruption.

The Art Of The Fait Accompli Or, don’t get fooled again Republicans weren’t just out to line the pockets of the wealthiest Americans when they cut federal income taxes. They created the biggest budget deficit in the history of the world—$6 trillion projected over the next decade—in order to starve the federal government. Don’t take my word for it. Here’s Milton Friedman, the founding father of the supply-side economic theory espoused by Reagan and both Bushes: “History suggests,” argues Friedman, “that Washington spends whatever it receives in taxes plus as much more as it can get away with… how can we ever cut government down to size? I believe there is one and only one way: the way parents control spendthrift children, cutting their allowance. For government, that means cutting taxes. Resulting deficits will be an effective—I would go so far as to say, the only effective—restraint on the spending propensities of the executive branch and the legislature.” Bush and other supply-siders parrot Friedman’s starve-the-government philosophy even more frequently than their bromides about rising tides lifting all boats.
When a Democrat moves into the White House—which may be sooner rather than later—he’ll face a deficit crisis. Reversing the Bush tax cuts won’t be an attractive option, since Republicans can always convince an ahistorical citizenry that he’s “raising taxes.” He’ll probably do what Clinton did when he inherited the $1 trillion Reagan-Bush deficit in 1993—slash the budget. One thing’s for sure: there won’t be any money for the big new spending programs that Democrats use to build loyalty among working-class voters. Even if the economy has begun to recover from the current recession by then, it will be impossible to fund big ideas like national health care and high-speed rail. Republicans don’t waste time. Throughout their tenure they set things up so that their policies are enforced by judges and other political appointees who outlive their rule. Put yourself in the role of an incoming Democratic president in, say, January 2005. You probably have a very different view of the world from George W. Bush, but you won’t get much chance to act on it. You’ll inherit Bush’s occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, his Department of Homeland Security and

calm demeanor is the same he displays on the ramp at the Kahului Y. “There is a word in Japanese culture, satori, [that describes] when the mind, body and spirit come together,” Nagasako said. “You are in the zone.” Nagasako reveals a hint of weariness when he describes his competition schedule. “I’d like to be more carefree,” he said. But in the next breath he is extremely gracious. “I feel really lucky because my parents have been really supportive. They are at every contest. And [the fame] and the sponsors help me do what I want to do.” In the future, Nagasako sees himself still competing—but only if he’s still improving. “I’d like not to be injured,” he said. But if for some reason he’s forced to leave the cheering crowds behind, he wouldn’t mind training other kids or maybe even shooting videos of the sport. Right now, he just isn’t sure. MTW

Pro skater Thumper Nagasako tries to stay focused Thumper Nagasako worries about looking like a punk. Not because the soft-spoken 20-year-old has an explosive personality, wears ripped black t-shirts displaying political slogans or gets into any measure of trouble, but because he’s an in-line vert skating pro. “A lot of people look at people in action sports as punks,” he said. “But I’d like them to look at us like any other athlete. We work just as hard.” Ranked 13th in the world and sponsored by Moku Clothing and Harbinger pads, the tall, clean-cut Nagasako is preparing for the ASA World Championships of Skating. Starting this weekend, they’ll run till Nov. 23 at the Los Angeles Fairplex in California. Nagasako travels much of the year to compete around Hawaii and the mainland. At home with his parents in Wailuku, he can be found at the local YMCA six days out of the week, cross-training to gain muscle and strength and methodically practicing his litany of tricks on a steeply concave vert ramp. Strapped into skates since the age of 12, the young athlete’s dedication to his sport has metamorphosed into both “a mental and physical practice.” He likens the experience to an education. “It has taught me more about myself and disciplined me more than anything else.” But after practice, this Bruce Leelike concentration is left behind like the sweat in his helmet, Nagasako said. Making a serious effort to diversify his athletic lifestyle with other interests, he gravitates toward hobbies that the most of us do only because we have to—fixing his car, attending computer and business classes at Maui Community College when his schedule permits and reading. Lots of reading. He is currently lugging around a copy of James Michener’s Bible-thick Hawaii. “I’ve been pretty good at keeping myself well-rounded,” he said. “If you only focus [on your sport], you don’t have balance.” This balanced lifestyle allows Nagasako to focus in the midst of the MTV-style hype that defines today’s professional competition. And espe-

cially at the larger events, like the X Games, the Gravity Games and last year’s Amateur World Championships in California—which he won—this focus is paramount to keep from cracking. There’s a lot of pressure, the pressure to do your personal best and to perform better than the others around you, that can “drain your passion” for the sport altogether. On the road, Nagasasko takes care of himself, eschewing the “Girls Gone Wild”style ragers that are every teenage boy’s dream. He travels with his parents, loads up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and protein shakes, plays Frisbee to calm his nerves and fervently studies written tips to make his routine run more smoothly. And when he skates in front of the screaming crowds, with his image blown up exponentially on 20-foot movie screens to eardrum-paralyzing music, his

At work with a nude model By Anthony Pignataro It’s nearly 6 a.m., the sun is peaking over a rocky point on Maui’s North Shore and Crystal is naked. With a cliff on her right and the Pacific Ocean on her left, she is standing still on a large rock, her feet just inches from a precipitous drop into jagged surf. Crystal is quiet, her face expressionless—not because she’s overwhelmed by the beauty around her or because she’s reached some transcendental meditative state, but because she is working. She is modeling. Above her head she is holding a flimsy, transparent fabric with a metallic sheen that she and her photographer refer to as “The Material.” The cool morning breeze drapes it over her body. “That cloud band is a great cloud band,” says photographer Steve Donovan, watching the model through the viewfinder of his brand-new tripodmounted five mega-pixel Mavica F7-17 digital camera. The shoot is for a poster advertising a coming fashion show, and he is trying to capture that moment when the sunrise explodes behind Crystal, silhouetting her body against a sky of cascading fire. His assistant, Nicole Severson, stands next to him. “That’s amazing,” she says of the shots as the sunlight gets brighter. “That’s looking good,” says Donovan. Crystal arches her back and juts out her chest. She looks out to sea. She looks straight ahead. She looks at the camera. She looks at a small cave in the cliff where someone—for whatever reason— placed a fresh pineapple. Not as famous as some models, Crystal has appeared in all the usual skin mags: Playboy, Penthouse, Perfect 10, as well as upcoming issues of Hustler and Swank, the latter of which will feature her on the cover. The recent VH-1 documentary Centerfold Babylon included footage from one of her studio shoots. Crystal, 22, has lived on Maui for the last year, which is unique for someone in her line of work. “Los Angeles is the place to be for nude modeling,” she said. “I go there about every month and a half. Normally I stay two to three weeks and work every day. On one day, for just a nude shoot, I can make $700.” She says millionaires have offered her “ridiculous amounts of money to be their company for some event or to travel around the world with them.” She says she ignores the offers. “I’m a model, not some escort girl,” she said. “But as soon as you take your clothes off people seem to think they can buy you for whatever they want.”

Too short for high fashion modeling—she’s 5’ 7”—Crystal has dyed blonde hair and brown eyes. She weighs 115 pounds, has no tattoos or non-ear piercings and retains her natural 34B chest. Born Oct. 21, 1981 in a suburb of Vienna, Austria, Crystal moved to Maui to get out of the cold winters and to be closer to her professional windsurfer boyfriend. But before she came here, she was in her third year studying psychology at the University of Vienna. For a psychology student, there is no more significant place to get an education—it’s where famed father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud earned his medical degree. Crystal says school, or rather her intense drive to be the world’s most perfect student, drove her into modeling. “I had to take a break from my studies,” she said. “I still want to go into psychology someday, but I always put too much pressure on myself. My family didn’t say I had to bring back good grades, but I felt I had to. They’d say ‘Bring back a C or D just for a change.’ But I wanted to impress them and my teachers.” But even someone with such schooling in psychology couldn’t explain why she decided to go from such an intellectual discipline to one often derided as the epitome of anti-intellectualism. “I had really bad acne when I was a teenager,” she said after a long pause. “Sometimes it was so bad I wouldn’t even go out. People always said I was beautiful, that I could model. I didn’t view myself as beautiful. But when I got older it got better and I went to an agency. I know it’s strange, that I had no self-esteem back then and now I’m a nude model. I don’t know why, but I don’t feel any difference between standing naked at home or in front of a photographer.” “It doesn’t look like the sky’s going to be really flamboyant today,” says Donovan. “There’s too much vog in the air.” Crystal, wrapped in a towel, yawns. She had to get up at 4 a.m. for this shoot, then shower and put her makeup on and pick out her clothes and finish getting ready in time to meet Donovan and Severson at 5 a.m. And when they finally did get to Birthing Pools, she realized the thick-soled sandals she’d picked out that morning were totally unsuitable for hiking on rock and lava. So with the sky still black, and everyone hiking down the side of the cliff by flashlight, she had to endure the trek barefoot. As for Donovan, photography only constitutes a part of his monthly paycheck. A Nova Scotia resident, Donovan also works as a bomb disposal inspector at the old U.S. Navy gunnery range on Kaho’olawe. “I learned about ordnance as a deep sea diver in the Canadian Navy,” he said. “I was posted on a deep diving ship years ago. It had a darkroom that no one except me paid any attention to. I used to spend six or seven hours a day in there. I basically taught myself photography. Now I have studios in Canada. Photography is my love. I’m not a real lover of bomb disposal.” During the shoot, Donovan’s assistant Severson rushes around, mostly helping Crystal. Throughout the shoot she retrieves film and batteries. She holds Crystal’s towel. She watches Donovan line up a shot. “I love my job,” she says, giggling during one session. Severson says she came to Hawaii a few months ago from Berkeley, California. In that time she bounced from island to island, doing odd jobs, eventually ending up in Paia. “I do nude modeling, too, but it’s mostly for art classes,” she says. “One time it was for a class of about 15 senior citizens. I sat there about an hour, playing my guitar. Another time I fell asleep on the couch. They said I looked so natural.”
She says she’ll eventually head back to Northern California and become an elementary school teacher. Until then, she says she loves working with Donovan. “I met Steve in town and started doing modeling for him,” she says. “Now I’m learning computer skills, Adobe Photoshop, modeling and taking photos. We’ve been spending a lot of time together. We’re basically building a partnership. I’m really, really excited about this.” I ask how long she and Donovan have been working together. “Oh, I met Steve a week ago,” she says. The Birthing Pools shoot ended at 7 a.m. with some bikini shots near some tide pools set within jagged lava formations. This time, to get his shot, Donovan has to stand in about an inch of water. Of course, before Crystal modeled nude at Birthing Pools or anywhere else, there was The First Shoot. It was for Suze Randall, one of the biggest names in glamour photography. It was in Randall’s studio. Present were Crystal, Randall, three assistants, a make-up artist, an aide who selected dresses and another model preparing for a porn shoot later that day. “It was a short shoot, just four hours,” said Crystal. “But I was pretty nervous. I had to sit on a ‘butt cloth.’ It’s so you don’t get any lines on your butt. It’s ridiculous, really, but that’s how it works. You also can’t have your shoes on for very long or you’ll get lines on your skin. Same with a bikini. Basically they try to get you naked as soon
as possible.” During the shoot, Crystal said Randall had a funny way of talking. “She’d say ‘Come on, you hot slut! Give it to me, bitch!’ in her British accent,” Crystal said. “She could do that because she’s a woman.” I asked Crystal about the poses Randall and other photographers asked of her. “You have to be super flexible to be a glamour model,” she said. “You have one leg over here,” she said, throwing her left arm straight out. “And one leg over here,” she said, throwing her other arm straight out. “And you have to hold this position while they shoot one or two roles of film. My legs would start trembling. Then they might tell you to move your foot two centimeters to the right. They’re that precise. No girl I ever met was turned on by a photo shoot.” Crystal says she refuses shoots involving other girls, sex toys or porn for any magazine. “Adult modeling is still about modeling,” she said. “But porn is just about getting fucked.” Because of her limitations, Crystal says her glamour modeling days will be even shorter than usual—perhaps only another year or two. “The whole business is about fresh faces,” she said. “Magazines never really shoot you twice. So if you just do single-girl stuff, you will run out of work.” One thing Crystal says she must do is answer fan mail from her website subscribers. While insisting that most are “gentlemen,” she said some are disturbing. “There are fans who have a certain fetish and tell me how beautiful my feet are and that they would like to see them in pantyhose or stuff like that,” she said. “Others are into bondage or handgagging or some other weird stuff. But I never talk to any of my fans about my private sex life. That’s simply none of their business. My philosophy is simply not to get too involved in the whole thing, which means I try not to think about their fantasies about me. And I never imagine what they are doing while looking at my pictures.” The last time Crystal played the piano was in L.A. a few months ago. She was there for a shoot, staying at the Hotel Furama near Los Angeles International Airport. It was in the middle of the night and she couldn’t sleep. She needed music. Music had always been a huge part of her life. She played the xylophone at age three. Then the flute. Then the piano. She was in a rock band in Austria. She went to a high school where classical music instruction was as important as math. There were three pianos in her home—one the family played, one that was old and out of tune and an electronic keyboard. “I need music,” she said. “It’s my outlet. The next big thing I buy will be a piano. Not a decent car, which I really need badly, but a piano.” Tiptoeing downstairs, Crystal went to the lobby. There she sat at the glistening white grand piano and began playing. She played for a while, then crept back upstairs and went to bed. “I made sure there weren’t any people around,” Crystal said. “It was just for myself. I didn’t want to give a show.” MTW

You can’t miss it. If you happen to be driving up Lower Main Road towards Mill Street and you’re passing by all the muted colors of Wailuku’s industrial area, you will see a brightly colored mural covering the entire side of one building to your right. The mural depicts an ethnic woman, looking somewhat like a busty Jane Russell, holding a trumpet and a Mexican flag, with a sombrero at her side. Welcome to Fiesta Time. By the time my dining companion and I got there, we were famished. Authentic Mexican cooking’s mouthwatering scents emanated from the kitchen, causing my friend to recall her abuela’s home-cooking when she was growing up. My head spun with the idea of hot, homemade tortillas and spicy chipotle and habañero sauces. I picked the first thing I saw on the side of their menu board, along with an old standby. “I’ll have a mushroom quesadilla and a guacamole taco, please,” I said, practically jumping up and down in my delirium for food. “And the chicken enchilada plate.” After I strong-armed my friend to order—and quick—we were able to sit and peruse the menu a bit more without the pressure of deciding. But then we were doing the whole, “Ooo, that looks good! I should’ve ordered that, dammit!” eyesbigger-than-our-stomach mind game. There was the general array of tacos, burritos, enchiladas and tostadas, all with your choice of carne asada, chicken, beef, fish or veggie, and available either ala carte or with rice and beans. Prices ranged from $1.95 for an ala carte taco to $11.95 for a couple of the specials, which looked really good. Tortuous, even. One special that stood out was the Enchiladas Mazatlan for $9.95, which are shrimp enchiladas wrapped with mushrooms, olives, bell peppers and topped
with cheese. Mmm… They also featured a chorizo burrito with guacamole, sour cream, lettuce and cheese for $7.50 and shrimp fajitas for $11.99. I wondered if we should have ordered one of those authentic homemade tamales, too. But then our food arrived and we devoured it wholeheartedly. I haven’t had enchiladas in a long time because I’m not usually crazy about the sauce. However, these chicken enchiladas were scrumptious and the sauce was a perfect balance of flavor and tanginess. In fact, everything tasted especially fresh— hot and cheesy—just how we like it! And the chunky guacamole is some of the best I’ve had on the island, which is why I always get a guacamole taco. The salsa, too, was unique and flavorful with just enough spice to appease my adventurous, appetite for the adrenaline rush, taste buds. I meant to go up and ask what ingredients they used, but the small, popular place filled up immediately with a mixed crowd of visitors and locals, all clamoring for their turn at the menu mind game. It was pretty diverse crowd of customers when I visited one late weekend afternoon. There was a young local family and a Caucasian-looking couple who were actually carrying on a conversation in Spanish with the cook, basically telling him how great the food was. Then a large family of visitors came in about the time a local woman picked up an order on her way home from work. “That was quick!” she said. Latin American author Eduardo Galeano writes, “The church says: The body is a sin. Science says: The body is a machine. Advertising says: The body is a business. The body says: I am a fiesta.” I couldn’t agree more. ¡Vamos a comer! Fiesta Time is located at 1132 Lower Main, Wailuku. Dave Alvin American troubadour
This Friday, a lucky bunch of Mauians will be enlightened, educated and entertained by one of America’s most dynamic rockers—Dave Alvin. Former lead guitarist for the progressive Los Angeles bands The Blasters and X, Alvin has spent the past decade or so writing, recording and performing solo. His critically acclaimed albums include the 2001 grammy-award-winning Public Domain: Songs from the Wild Land, a collection of traditional American folk and blues tunes. When I spoke to Alvin last week, he was both excited and nervous about his first visit to the islands. “I’m really intimidated,” he said, “Hawaii’s guitar country. It’s like perform-

ing in Texas!” This coming from a guy whose understanding and appreciation of America’s musical roots runs deep. When he and his brother Phil formed The Blasters in the early ‘80s, their intention was to play “old blues... old Carl Perkins stuff and get paid for it.” Phil was the front man, with his unmistakable booming-voice and grimace. But Dave was the one who showed up at rehearsals with fresh material and his revvedup stratocaster ready to rock the joint. The Blasters became hard-rocking interpreters of the American roots-rock landscape. Catching a Blasters show at the Whiskey or the Palomino was pure bliss. No one ever sat down. Kids would swing in the aisles or just go nuts when Dave soloed on guitar or Gene Taylor laid down a boogie-woogie number. Evocative originals like “Long White Cadillac,” and “Border Radio” rang out with poetic intensity and the Blasters earned well-deserved critical acclaim along with a loyal following. The band’s anthem “American Music” celebrated the rich tapestry of American musical history. When guitarist Billy Zoom left punk band X, Alvin stepped in and added a new countryfolk dimension to the band. X singer John Doe and Alvin recorded punk and countryacoustic versions of songs like “Little Honey,” and went on to form the hillbilly offshoot band The Knitters. When Alvin set off on his own, the prospect of performing his own material was a bit

Dave and his hand daunting at first. “It took a while to figure out what kind of voice I had,” he explained. He knew he couldn’t keep writing songs for other people to sing. If he wanted the real emotion to shine through, he had to step up to the mic. Since then, Dave Alvin seems determined to record and perform unadulaterated, authentic American music. His most recent live album Out in America includes tracks from performances at a Unitarian church in Pasadena. As always, there’s more grit than glitz in these recordings. “When you play live it’s different,” he said. “There’s much more intensity... I want to sweat and jam and make noise and fall down... in order to keep it fresh. Great chunks of it have to be raw.”

Friday night’s acoustic show will feature songs from every era of Alvin’s career. He’ll include folk and blues tunes along with some Blasters and X favorites. Dave Alvin’s knowledge of musical history extends to Hawaii. Although this will be his first visit to the islands, he went on about the profound influence Hawaiian instrumentation has had on America’s “mainland” music. “Although it’s almost 3,000 miles away, the Hawaiian influence on American music is pretty huge,” he said. “Slack-key and slide guitar tunings began as a novelty, but became a craze... as early as 1917.” Alvin’s musical library includes the early recordings of steel guitar legend Sol Ho’opi’i, among other Hawaiian masters. When I asked him about the fate of American Music, I fully expected him to lament its untimely demise. Instead, Alvin sounded pretty optimistic. “Is there a Hank Williams out there?” he asked. “No. Is there a [Delta Blues legend] Howlin’ Wolf out there? No. But there are 18year-olds out there playing bluegrass. Largerthan-life personalities take a while to develop.” I didn’t want to bring up Britney Spears and Justin Timburlake. Sails, Seamanship And Surprise Russell Crowe occupies a frigate of adventure Based on Patrick O’Brian’s novels Master and Commander and The Far Side of the World, from the author’s “Aubrey/Maturin” historical novel series, Peter Weir directs this clipper ship war drama with loving attention to the ethos of life on the high seas during the 19th century Napoleonic Wars. Captain “Lucky” Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) leads the British crewmembers of his 28-gun warship, the HMS Surprise, on a dangerous pursuit of the French warship Acheron through surprise attacks, volatile moral shifts, and grim weather conditions. Paul Bettany (A Beautiful Mind) is charismatic as the ship’s nature-obsessed doctor/surgeon Stephen Maturin who plays right-handman to Captain Jack. Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World is an expansive cinematic achievement that sits well against such adventure classics as Lawrence of Arabia, and is a sure bet for fans of ocean bound drama.

The worst thing about Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World is its colossal title. Master And Commander would surely have sufficed in putting across the level of dutiful attention being paid to Patrick O’Brian’s work without throwing an anchor on top of the anvil. But once you get past that mouthful, and the hullabaloo about Russell Crowe’s trademark mood swings, and that this is not a pirate story, Master And Commander blossoms as a delicately measured adventure movie about men’s loyalty in war and the tools of history that guide them through battle. But it’s not just the mettle of men that the story deals with. Significantly, we witness a transfer from boyhood to manhood in the guise of boy officer Lord Blakeney
Russell Crowe in a clipper ship war drama (Max Pirkis) after the film’s opening dazzling battle sequence. The cannonballs that rip literally through the HMS Surprise leave Blakeney with a wound to his right arm that can only be treated with immediate amputation. More of a victim than a hero, the wounded young officer soon receives the gift of a book about naval legend Lord Nelson from Captain Jack. Even as the young officer aligns himself with the naturalist pursuits of the ship’s doctor Maturin, the sacrifice of his arm goes further in insuring his status as a warrior who, like his ship’s Commander, is most deeply inspired by legends of bravery and battle logic. The magic that Peter Weir (Gallipoli) works is to take us to a time and place we’ve never been and carefully tutor us in the details of etiquette and dimension of that experience.
The movie gives a sense of scale for the ship in relation to the ocean—and to the vessel it pursues—that allows the audience time to reflect on the confused thoughts and tempestuous emotions of its crewmembers. Weir allows the movie to run long because he wants the audience to assimilate the odd rhythms of peace and anxiety that the Commander and his crew endure at the whim of Mother Nature. In this way Master And Commander is the antithesis of Weir’s last film The Truman Show, which floundered due to its lack of context for the world beyond the protagonist’s enclosed bubble. Although this story allows for limited contact much beyond the confines of the ship, the parameters of the ever-lurking enemy ship, and the islands the crew briefly visit, we know that this is the uni-
verse for these brave men. For his performance as Captain Jack, Russell Crowe learned to play the violin and immersed himself in the linguistic source of his character while studying books on naval history. That information is necessary only inasmuch as it portends Mr. Crowe’s thoroughly convincing turn as a committed man of duty who leads his crew, and the film, without flinching or calling up anything less or more than the script demands. Crowe’s Captain Jack Aubrey is the kind of masculine character that little boys look up to and imagine as a perfect example of everything an average man is capable of. That compliment is one to be shared by the ensemble of people who made the movie and the audiences who revere their fine efforts. Rating PG13 137 mins. MTW

The Spiritual Maverick

The dance of flamenco is a genuine Spanish art that dates back to the late 18th century. It is a very emotive and dramatic dance, full of sensuality and elegant physical technique. The music, consisting of dynamic and highly stylized soloist guitar playing, is influenced by jazz, salsa, and bossa nova. The travel guide All About Spain says, “You have not listened to authentic Flamenco if not in a juerga with a small group of friends, at midnight somewhere in the South of Spain, when there is nothing around but the voice, the guitar and the body of a dancer moving in the moonlight.” But this weekend with the lovely lady in red, La Tania, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, may be as close as you can get to experience this essence of duende, or “soul of flamenco.”
It’s not every entertainer who bills himself as the first American to become a Buddhist monk in Burma, but Alan Clements isn’t your normal stage presence. Part Noam Chomsky, part Lenny Bruce, Clements is in town once again to do his “Spiritually Incorrect” show. “We must do all we can to develop the spiritual self-defense to protect ourselves from propaganda, indoctrination and mind control,” he told Maui Time last year. “My weaknesses, foibles and the rest I see as facets on a diamond, rather than flaws to overcome.” They call him a “spiritual maverick,” but with a philosophy, he’s more like a spiritual anarchist. Reggae Cum Laude Friday, 9:30 p.m. at Hapa’s; Saturday, 9:30 p.m. at Casanova’s The founding members of Northern California’s roots reggae band Groundation met while studying jazz at Sonoma State University. So like all good jazz students, they started up a reggae band! Actually, the lead singer taught the first ever U.S. university offered History of Reggae Music course at Sonoma State as well. Now the band has been performing their original reggae music, along with some roots rockin’ covers, for four years and receiving some remarkably high praise. Jammin’ Reggae Archives called Groundation’s Each One Teach One album “one of the most satisfying roots reggae albums of the last five years—from any country.” With such ranking sounds like that they should be able to nice up the dance at Hapa’s and Casanova’s this weekend, nuh? And that’s iiiii-rey, mon!
Revolutionaries Sat., 12 p.m. at Borders in Kahului; Sun., 12 p.m. at the Old Courthouse in Lahaina Evelyn E. Cook’s written this book, you see, and it’s got a few people angry. The book is called 100 Years of Healing—The Legacy of a Kauai Missionary Doctor, and it’s about, well, a Kauai missionary doctor. Specifically, Dr. James W. Smith, who practiced medicine on Kauai in the middle to late 19th century. The controversy stems from Cook’s treatment of Smith’s eldest son, W.O. Smith—who planted Lahaina’s banyan tree—and led the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. Contrary to accepted historical dogma, Cook found Smith “motivated by a sincere desire to end corruption in government.” Agree or not, she’ll be here this weekend to talk story and discuss her findings. I grew up listening to my mom’s records of Van Halen, Blondie and Miles Davis, which makes my current bipolar musical tendencies somewhat understandable. After some embarrassing junior high pop fanaticism that included Duran Duran, Bananarama and The Cure, I decided goth-industrial (Skinny Puppy, Joy Division, Alien Sex Fiend) music and punk rock (Misfits, GBH, The Adolescents) would be better suited to make my mom really squirm. It worked until she told me she actually liked Fields of Nephilim and the Butthole Surfers so then that ended right there. Anyway, music has always been my number one love—weird but brief freedom rock and Grateful Dead phases notwithstanding, my eclectic tastes have pretty much been consistent in including some classical (Mozart’s Nocurnes, esp.) and jazz (John Coltrane, Billie Holliday), some old country (Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline), some hard rock, punk and metal (duh), world music and now, more currently, electronica. I must agree with Spike in saying it’s completely masochistic to hone down my endless and moody list to anything less than ten. But here goes…
PETER GABRIEL “PASSION: LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST” [SOUNDTRACK] Mostly instrumental, with Eastern and African influences and intertwined rhythms, this is ambient world music with a rock edge, but don’t let that scare you. Ethereal and yes, passionate, the music is haunting and will stimulate your senses. Listening to this CD is an intense introspective experience—who needs drugs? Just open your mind and listen to this one. —Universal Records 1988
TOOL “UNDERTOW” Angry and nihilistic yet wistful, intelligent and emotional, Tool not only lyrically challenges standard conventions of religion and thought, but also musically what it means to be ‘metal.’ Effectively powerful and heavy, it’s metal without unintelligible screaming and obnoxious pretension. Standouts include brutal classics “Prison Sex” and “Sober,” Henry Rollins’ guest appearance on “Bottom,” the melodic rage of “Crawl Away,” Danny Carey’s fierce drumming, and of course, James Maynard Keenan. Keenan is one of the most uniquely emotive vocalists and enigmatic lyricists of the entire hard rock/metal genre. Not to mention the videos still give me nightmares. —Volcano Records 1993
TRICKY “MAXINQUAYE” This is Tricky’s finest work and a timeless release in smoldering trip-hop. Lots of other dub and electronica artists and songs tend to sound repetitive, but the various tones and moods Tricky uses make each song fresh and flavorful. Maxinquaye utilizes distorted percussion, aggressive guitar riffs and eclectic sampling, and all throughout the album, a solid bass-heavy backbeat and Tricky’s sexy low-key rap that gives Martina Topley-Bird’s sultry vocals an unexpected contrasting power and eroticism, especially on songs like “Overcome,” “Suffocated Love” and “Abbaon Fat Track.” It’s all about Martina, really. This album is dark, resonating and hypnotically sexual, sonic bliss. —Polygram Records 1995

Trent Reznor is one twisted fuck. And a musical genius. He proved it on 1994’s rock/pop/techno/metal/industrial-frenzied Downward Spiral. But whereas that album unleashes frustrated angst, The Fragile unfolds slow and steady, with a more mature and explosive catharsis. While the instrumental song, “The Frail,” is almost hopelessly heartbreaking, “The Wretched” somehow soothes in its spiteful contempt. This is one of the most beautiful albums ever written, composed by a graceful master of angry, hopeless, redemptive and empowering music. Did I already say what my favorite album is? Oh, darn. Well, this is absolutely my favorite double-CD album of all time. Ever. —Interscope Records 1999 MTW

My Friend José “But you CAN say ‘bitch,’” he said. He was one of the Digital Underground management trying to give Humpty the lowdown on obscenity protocol before they went on stage at Hapa’s. You know, stuff like, you can’t say “f**k” or “s**t” or “affordable housing on Maui.” Apparently, the DU crew was busy getting drunk and receiving this lowdown at Horhito’s, while next door, the opening band was pissing off the crowd. I think they were called Underwater Tongues with Dr. Platypus or something. My friends said they kept trying to dedicate the show to their “dead homies” and “Tupac Shakur” before they even began rapping. Inevitably, they were boo-ed off the stage. “They coulda been good,” said Dave. “But they were just… bad.” The next night had me and a friend checking the scene on Front Street, testing the tequila at Kobe, Hard Rock Café, Hecocks and of course, the Sly Mongoose. We saw Travis from the old popular Lahaina band Need For Water there, along with naughty musician, Howard Ahia. Why is it that when I’m out with someone I like, other men suddenly want to give me attention? My friend Kevin kept kissing me, which was nice and all ‘cause he’s a handsome, witty, vocabularily-gifted man—but he’s also gay. I mean, of course. On Saturday, Katy and I attended an Aloha ‘Oe Party for Matt, our Maui Film Festival buddy and Kahoolawe environmental scientist leaving Maui to do research in Iraq, of all places. The party was in Kuau, at this amazing property on a little cliff overlooking Tavares Bay. They had this fabulous jazz band outside under the full moon and there was yummy BBQ, wine and beer, and lotsa love for Matt. The crowd was young and beautiful with a sprinkling of the international flavor. They consisted mostly of surfers, Seabury graduates and fellow Kahoolawe co-workers, one of whom was telling me of his bizarre psychic relationship with Baby Jesus. Don’t ask. Of course, I didn’t and I still got an earful. One attractive young couple, John and Kimmy, was convinced they were going to catch the Olinda Cat and wanted to give me an exclusive. Another charming couple, Rob and Denby, kept giving up my identity to these interesting new people I had just met while they were mid-story so that suddenly their stories would switch to, “Uh, it wasn’t really ME—it was a FRIEND of mine… yeah.” I overheard this one cute girl tell her friend about the Commando Hike she did the other day—you know, the one by the bamboo forest in Huelo. “Oh, you went hiking with no underwear?” her friend said. As I briefly and shamelessly flirted with a sexy Italian boy from Naples, one of Matt’s friends was giving a toast. He was basically singing Matt’s praises, going on and on about the effects the young scientist and surfer has had on the folks gathered there in his honor. “Matt’s touched more people than the New England archbishop,” he said. Yeah. Then Katy got drunk—no, not I— and sad for her David Letterman Show celebrity pal Matt. So we went to the SandBar in Paia to see our friend José… Cuervo, that is. We ended up talking to the hilarious Élan from the John Moore Project, who told me how much he enjoys reading Maui Time Weekly. “I like to check the horoscopes and what band is playing where, then stick the paper under the seat of my car and read the rest later on the toilet when I have time,” said Élan. Then the jazz musicians from Matt’s party came into the bar, including keyboardist Mark Johnson. As I reached my hand out to shake his, Katy intercepted me to give Mark a big, juicy hug. “Hey, she just cock-blocked me!” I said to Élan. “Do girls really call it that?” he asked. “Can you think of anything better?” I replied. He thought for a moment. “How ‘bout ‘vaginal obstruction’?” he said, laughing. I went back to talking to my friend José. MTW
