You’ve learned enough about “renters’ rights” to successfully scam nice working people out of their hard-earned money and live for free for three months at a time. We showed you aloha when we believed your sob story about the harassment you received by your former roommates. We sublet you a room because you seemed so genuine. But as soon as you moved in, you put a stop payment on your bad check and locked yourself in your new room. When we tried to find out why, you yelled through the locked door to leave you alone and in one minute the police were at the door. That’s when you appeared screaming that we are harassing and threatening you and that you have every right to be there and you aren’t leaving. The police tell us that we can’t throw you out, but of course you know this already. It will take a minimum of 45 days to legally evict you. Then we find out that your former roommates’ only harassment was to ask you for rent. Our nightmare with you is finally over, but the other day a distraught woman came to our door and asked, “Did you sublet a room to a woman named “Larry? Ever have trouble with her?” Good job “Larry”— more free rent. You must be proud!

We all have to live behind closed curtains and locked doors. The worst part of this is that you’re also the head of security at a major resort. Do you spy on women there, too? Why not, you have access to everything. Why don’t you grow up before you lose your job and your lovely wife. Give us our lives back before your life changes forever. To the “LITTLE DEVIL” that gave the “Evil Clown” and the “OG Kangol Clock Guy” the ride to the Party on Halloween Night. First of all, you looked AMAZING in that little red bikini. You needed a party and we needed a ride. When I woke up on Saturday I was missing my “Evil” teeth, my wig, my horn, some brain cells, and my phone. I had no idea how to get in touch with you except thru my phone...you answered it once and hung up before I could get details. Last thing I heard, my phone was somewhere in Haiku. After a few days I had lost all hope of recovering the lost cell. Somehow my phone was passed through four sets of strangers’ hands and then into mine? I just want to THANK YOU and the other three strangers for the help in returning my cell phone. “Little Devil” —THANKS for not letting my phone burn in Hell! ‘Growth is Inevitable’
Coaching residents on the Pu’unoa housing project News article on the project that came out that morning and lots of pretty drawings of the future 254-home neighborhood. “Pu’unoa: A people friendly community,” read one brochure. Another included the line “Planned, priced and placed right; Pu’unoa Village is for Maui’s people.” “I’m disheartened that this issue seems to be divisive,” said Martin. “We’re just trying to get some facts out. We hope the council looks at the issues.” They used all the clichés about pride and community. “We want to do something signature, creative, innovative—a little bit out of the box,” said Smith. “We’re creating a community that will be a cohesive community. You’ll be proud to live there. But what we need are people like yourselves to be heard, to come forward at the county council meeting. If we’re successful at the end of the day we’ll make a reasonable profit. I don’t need to do this to make my life happy and successful.” Never mind that county planning director Mike Foley has already determined the “127 affordable housing units” promised by Smith
Many people spoke very eloquently Monday night at Lahainaluna Intermediate School on why the Maui County Council needs to approve Kent Smith’s Pu’unoa housing project. They spoke from the heart about the need for affordable housing in West Maui. They talked of how quaint and lovely the homes were going be. And they defended Smith’s end run around the county to get the state to fast-track his project. Of course, all those residents were very thoughtful and eloquent because they’d already been coached on how to boost the intensely controversial project by the developer and landowner. In the early evening hours of Oct. 30, about 50 people gathered under a tree at the old Plantation Manager’s House in Olowalu to get tips on what to say at the council hearing. Smith was there, as were fellow developers and landowners Peter Martin and Jim Riley. They and their assistants handed out sample letters to write to the county council, special “fact sheets” on the project, copies of the approving Maui

At the end, one woman asked where it would all end—when would developers stop converting agricultural land into residential and commercial projects. “Growth is inevitable,” Smith said to a sea of nodding heads. And he kept saying it. “Growth is inevitable. Growth is inevitable.” MTW
At first, Martin said his group’s going to the state “was not” a way around the county. But then he corrected himself. “In a way it’s a way around the process,” he said. “But it’s the law. We need a safety valve for good, worthy projects. We did the essence of an EIS.” Michelle Chouteau McLean, who works with Smith, agreed, but used more direct terms. “This would normally take a couple years,” she said. “[Going to the state] is just a cleaner, straighter way from point A to point B. The new [Alan Arakawa] administration wasn’t going to support us. So we turned to the state instead. They [the county] didn’t like the fact that they said no and we found another way to get it done.” So much talk about the council was too

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, OCT. 27 Isn’t it interesting how year after year the same names float through the county hall of administration? Doesn’t even seem to matter who’s in charge anymore. For instance, take today’s county announcement that Kihei-based Rimrock Paving Co. just won a 40-working-day, $258,488 contract for resurfacing, wheelchair ramp construction, speed bump installation, pavement marking painting and crosswalk raising on a bunch of streets. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal. But what’s especially sweet of the county is how they don’t discriminate against Rimrock. You see, its parent Goodfellow Brothers, Inc. was quite close to the old James “Kimo” Apana mayoral regime. State campaign finance records show Goodfellow was a regular Apana contributor, giving then-powerful Democrat $1,225 since mid-June, 1998.
TUESDAY, OCT. 28 State biologists sadly report that efforts to make the dreaded Coqui Frog extinct in Hawaii are going nowhere. Despite our best extermination methods—including a massive 1,100-gallon chemical warfare assault on Oahu—the very small, very loud animals insist on living—especially here on Maui. Yet state officials are optimistic—even talking like they were counter-insurgency officers in Baghdad. “We’re in a mode where we’re doing mopup,” Scott Williamson, an official with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, told The Maui News. “We’ve reduced the calling frogs way, way down, and it’s to the point where you’re after individual frogs.” Stupid selfish frogs… This reminds me: Are there any animals on this rock we shouldn’t fear? There are the

loudmouth frogs, sharks, feral pigs, centipedes, wild dogs, Dengue Fever-infected mosquitoes and, of course, that mysterious “Olinda Big Cat.” Oh, and last weekend some guy went snorkeling in murky Honolua Bay—who snorkels in murky water?—and now we have to be scared of the mighty barracuda.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 29 There are so many good things about living in Hawaii, it’s nice to see the state get recognized every now and then. For the third straight year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has bestowed on the Aloha State its annual “Highest Rate of Theft” award. Honolulu City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle accepted the award, attributing success to the state’s plucky, can-do attitude. “If you incapacitate criminals you stop crime,” he told The Maui News. “We’ve stopped thinking like that.” Carlisle added that high drug use and allowing “property offenders to be given multiple chances so that their criminality escalates” were also important factors. Unfortunately, Hawaii once again lost out on the FBI’s “Most Violent Crime” award, coming in a disappointing 43rd place… Just when I thought this island’s snack hole couldn’t stretch any wider, I got a press release that began “Life on Maui is getting even sweeter—Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is heading to town!” Or actually, 70-100 of the sticky, sugary rings of fried dough arrived today, at precisely 2:30 this afternoon in an what was supposed to be an ancient doughnut delivery truck named “Eleanor” that the Winston-Salem-based company shipped out here for the official unveiling, but it’s still on the boat. The new store—the first in Hawaii— will open in January at a sweet, sweet location right across from Costco in Kahului. The location is so sick that it’s the first thing arriving

THURSDAY, OCT. 30 State water management officials weasel out of taking over the dwindling Waihe’e Aquifer, at least until January. Their reason: they need “more accurate measurements” of how low water tables are dropping… The Maui News finally gets around to reporting on developer Kent Smith’s Pu’unoa housing project (first seen here, folks: “‘Minimal Government Oversight,’” Oct. 9). Headlined “Affordable home project proposal finds mayor in way,” the story takes up 56 column inches, not including two—count ‘em! Two!— sidebars. But despite its length and extended interviews with Smith and Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa, the story does little except push the developer’s case that he’s
building a bunch of really nice homes for poor people and he had to do an end-run around normal county planning procedures because of the mayor’s “personal opposition.”
FRIDAY, OCT. 31 This being Halloween means something like 21 million people will descend on Lahaina’s Front Street this evening. And they’ll all be drunk and wasted and stoned and tripping out on just about everything. Remember last year? That one woman who just got naked and painted herself green and that was her costume? The only thing that would have made that better is if she was the type of woman who should be getting naked and painting herself green and then walking down Front Street… This actually came in yesterday, but I was out all day and didn’t see it until today. But it’s huge and wildly important so I’m just going to quote it in full: “Mayor Alan Arakawa has announced that state funding has been released for work to proceed on restroom facilities at Wai’anapanapa State Park,” wrote county public information officer Ellen Pelissero. “‘Governor Linda Lingle has informed my office that authority to advertise for bids and the release of $120,000 has been granted to the Department of Land And Natural Resources for restroom improvements at the park,’ Arakawa said.” New state park restrooms! Looks like another Maui Time Weekly Road Trip!
SATURDAY, NOV. 1 Like most newspapers whose lead items don’t involve a sale on Wonder Bread, Maui Time gets a lot of mail. We get press releases, schedules and books authors who want to be reviewed. We get other newspapers, story submissions and back issue requests. But every once in a while, we get something so important, so grave that it literally makes us numb. That’s right—today we got a copy of the Fall Safety Issue of Helpful hints on HOME ELECTRICITY. This full-color glossy newsletter comes straight from the Leviton Institute, which if I’m not mistaken is where Henry Kissinger did most of his doctoral work. Either that or Harvard. Anyway, the newsletter contains many exciting stories like “Give Your Home A Face Lift with Decorative Electrical Devices” and “New Lighting Controls Can Liven Up Your Living Environment.” MTW

See the Hidden Wonders of Maui
Twenty two graduate from Maui Drug Court Robert C. is a clean-cut young father. He looks like a successful banker or stock trader, except he was wearing an aloha shirt and a few leis around his neck. He could easily appear on the cover of GQ or Vanity Fair. He was in Courtroom Two in the Second Circuit Courthouse in Wailuku on Oct. 30 because he is also a drug addict. Standing at the lectern, he cried as he cradled his infant daughter and spoke before the crowd of a few dozen well-wishers. “It really isn’t easy being up here right now,” he said, choking back tears as well as memories of a harsh past. “Fortunately she’s never seen me high or under the influence. I hope she never does.” Robert was one of 22 individuals representing all ages and socio-ethnic groups who graduated last Thursday from Maui Drug Court. The court is still very much an experiment in dealing with drug offenders. “We’ve been in business a little over three years,” said Judge Shackley F. Raffetto, one of the court’s two judges. “This is the way your judiciary can help out your community,” he said at the beginning of the graduation ceremony.
judge sometimes asked, to which the defendant invariably shook his or her head. “You ready?” he asked one young man from Hana. “Yeah,” he said. “You sure?” “Yeah.” The deputy district attorney would then read a brief statement that the defendant had successfully completed drug court and that “the state was glad to dismiss the charges.” He would then take some paperwork up to the bench for the judge to sign. “Okay, they’re gone,” Raffetto would say. “Congratulations.” Then many in the courtroom’s public gallery would erupt in cheers. This went on for each defendant. The whole process took half an hour. Later, each grad had to return to the lectern, accept a plaque, another lei and make a brief speech. Many cried. “My goal is to help individuals in the same situation I am,” said Albion B., before correcting herself. “I was.” One woman, who said she wants to use her new sobriety to return to school and get her masters in clinical psychology, wondered

“LIFE BEGINS AND LIFE ENDS,” SECOND CIRCUIT CHIEF COURT ADMINISTRATOR MELVIN ARAKAWA TOLD THE GRADUATES. “TODAY MARKS A BEGINNING. WHAT YOU DECIDE TO LIVE FOR IS IN YOUR HANDS.” Raffetto said Drug Court has so far graduated 86 people. Just four percent of those, he said, returned to using. Drug Court is a rigorous combination of therapy, skills training and substance abuse treatment designed to get the ballooning numbers of drug abusers out of already-overcrowded prisons. It is open to anyone charged with or in jail for a nonviolent drug or alcohol-related crime. It takes a minimum of 15 months to complete, though at least one recent graduate stayed with the program for a little over two years. The graduation ceremony began promptly at 1:30 p.m. with a “special afternoon calendar” of case dismissals. “This is one of those days when people start out in the program that they think they’ll never see,” said Raffetto. With the 22 defendants seated in the jury box, the court clerk read off the first name and case number. Some defendants had just one case number, others had as many as four. The defendant would then rise and walk to the lectern, where Raffetto would welcome them. “Did you think you’d see this day?” the

aloud how she could have been in a jail cell just two years ago. Another woman said she began using alcohol at age 14. While many told grim tales of abuse and chaos, others tried a more light-hearted approach. “This is one big trip for me!” said Kazmer O., a tall brah with a mega-fro from Hana. “I had no prior experience with our criminal justice system,” said Kaleo T. to a smattering of laughter. “I was curious to see what it was like. My curiosity has been satisfied.” Because public officials like to associate themselves with uplifting and inspiring events, a few of them also spoke. “Life begins and life ends,” Second Circuit Chief Court Administrator Melvin Arakawa told the graduates. “Today marks a beginning. What you decide to live for is in your hands.” Don Couch, an executive assistant to the mayor, spoke of how the grads still have “hard work and hard choices ahead.” And 13th District state representative Sol Kaho’ohalahala said he was glad Drug Court now included defendants from Lanai and Molokai. “This is much more than help,” he said. “It is a commitment on the part of the judiciary and much more on the part of you. Don’t be afraid of reality.” MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORY In October, West Point, Ky., hosted 12,000 visitors for the weekend Knob Creek Gun Range Machine Gun Shoot, billed as the nation’s largest, with a separate competition for flame-throwers. Especially coveted is “The Line,” where 60 people (waiting list is 10 years long to be admitted) get to fire their machine guns into a field of cars and boats, and during which a shooter might run through $10,000 in ammunition. Among the champions: Samantha Sawyer, 16, the top women’s submachine gunner for the last four years. One man interviewed by the Louisville CourierJournal said he met his wife at a previous Shoot, knowing that “if she could accept flame-throwing as a hobby, she could accept anything.” Said another: “This is one of those times when you know this (the U.S.) is the greatest place on Earth.”
MORE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT In September, customs officials in Amsterdam stopped a Nigerian man trying to enter the Netherlands with a suitcase containing 1,500 to 2,000 baboon noses (which some people use in traditional healing, but which were in an advanced state of putridness). RECURRING THEMES In Easton, Pa., in July, Robert M. Peters Sr., 47, became the latest man to be acquitted of indecent exposure by persuading a jury that his penis is too small to have been seen by the complaining witness. A woman testified that she had seen “3 inches” of erect penis beyond the bottom of his shorts while he was working in her home, but via photographs and a brief trouserdropping in the courtroom, Peters convinced the jury that he is very modestly endowed and that she must have seen something else, such as a fold of fat on his 312-pound body.
GREAT ART! Two hunters on a remote mountain in northern Sweden in October came across an installation of 70 pairs of shoes filled with butter, according to an Associated Press report. Artist Yu Xiuzhen was attributed as the probable creator, in that he had staged a similar display in the Tibetan mountains surrounding Lhasa, China, in 1996. (A non-art-appreciating official in Sweden was more concerned about getting the shoes down before the butter rots.)
ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH A 39-year-old man was arrested for bank robbery 10 days after making a successful escape on an oversized tricycle (Woodbury, N.J.). Fast Forward’s team motorcycle racing at Maui Raceway Park Ricky Lanham wasn’t sure he was ready to get back on the bike after nearly twenty years of not racing. Motorcycle racing is dangerous. And it’s addictive. He realized once he started, he might not be able to stop. “He’s not crazy, he’s brave,” says Spencer Perry, crew chief for the motorcycle racing team, Fast Forward. “The term ‘brass cajones’ comes to mind.” Lanham holds the American Motorcyclists’ Association Pro Mod Record for 1980. He is a member of the International Drag Bike Association, raced with them from ’82-’86 and has an NHRA Pro license. But he put racing on hold in order to concentrate on more domestic issues, like marriage and kids. The name of the team, Fast Forward, also refers to the yellow 1983 Kawasaki GPZ1100 motorcycle that Lanham purchased earlier this season. He met mechanic Spencer Perry and his crew at the Raceway Park, asked him to work on the bike that has now been modified to be a 1260cc. And voilà, Lanham was back in the saddle. “No, I don’t have a death wish, I’m not crazy,” says Lanham. “I trust my crew. And I go to the line one-hundred percent prepared.” Perry graduated Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in ’93, took the Harley Davidson Factory training program and is a State of Hawaii certified motorcycle technician. He then opened his own shop, Spencer Cycles, two years ago in Lahaina. “I’ve always gone to the dragsters since I was in high school,” says Perry, “because

I like cars and machines and shit like that. And it’s something I love doing,” he says. He does all the mechanic work for free. “I’m new to this as far as dealing with equipment this high end,” says Perry. “This is a badass race bike, it really is. Thousands and thousands of dollars have been thrown into this bike. “I’m still learning,” he says. “So I’m just using the knowledge I have as a mechanic, doing a lot of Internet research, a lot of reading, and talking to anybody I can…and experimenting. It’s trial and error but so far, everything has gone well.” Perry has been with the team for six races now. “As I’ve gotten more time to tweak on the bike, and Rick’s gotten more comfortable riding it, we’re going faster,” he says, “and there’s more speed to go.” It actually takes four people to run a racing motorcycle like Fast Forward. Including Lanham and Perry, the team is also comprised of Robbie, the starter and fuel man, and

Turby, who helps stage the bike and also tows it back after the run. Perry keeps track of the reaction time—how long from the time the light turns green to when the rider, Lanham, hits the button—with a half second being ideal. The “60 ft.” time— how quickly the bike gets from the starting line to midway down the track—is critical to any racing. Perry says that time tells you how well your launch went. “It’s how good your tire hooks up, whether you spin the tire, how much power you’re making,” he says. “1.34 [seconds] is our best 60 ft. time ever,” he says. “And that’s fast.” When the motorcycle racer does that, he’s pulling close to three G-forces. “It slams him back in the seat,” says Perry. “He can feel his skin pull back.” The “quarter-mile” time gives the team their closeout info. “Our best ever—which we just
did the last race—was a 9.09 [seconds],” says Perry. The fastest speed they’ve achieved on the bike in that time so far has been 143 mph. The team recognizes the attention Fast Forward is getting now is comparable to that of the more popular dragsters and hot rods racing. “When Dirty White Boy goes to run, when Rude Awakening runs, everybody along the entire spectator lane goes up to the fence and watches. They’re doing that when we run now. When they hear our bike fire,” says Perry, “everyone puts their beer down, turns around and watches. So that’s killer.” The final races of the season will be on Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22, at Maui Raceway Park, which is located just off the Mokulele Highway in Puunene. Cost of admission is $7. The gates open at 4 p.m. with the races starting at 5:30 p.m. MTW

JoAnn Nagata, whose husband, Ray, opened Ray’s Deli in Paukukalo a number of years ago, confirmed this claim for me. “It’s not scientific,” she said, “but its combination of the salty broth, the fact that it’s a comfort food and so easy on the stomach.” She recalled many of Ray’s “regulars” hanging around the bar drinking beer until closing, then showing up the next morning for hot, fresh dashi. “I’m not sure if they were wearing the same clothes or not,” she said laughing. “I hope not!” In Japanese, saimin means “hypnotic.” Maybe our favorite fast food actually got its name when more than one drunken diner passed out in his half-eaten dashi. Ray closed his deli about a year ago, but people still talk about the Nagatas’ saimin. JoAnn would only divulge that their dashi included pork and seaweed and was simmered for at least six hours. Saimin is also the chief subsistence food of nearly every University of Hawaii student. Walk into any dorm room in Manoa and you’re likely to find a hot plate with the residue of last night’s (or this morning’s) sapporo ichiban or top ramen. You may also find an intricately stacked pyramid of Budweiser cans and a bottle of tequila. Local kids who choose to study “abroad” write home begging for big boxes of Zippy’s saimin to warm their frigid and homesick souls. And help them... um... study harder. Saimin shops have even opened in Washington and Las Vegas to cater to Hawaii expatriates longing for their childhood staple. In my quest

for the ultimate saimin, I visited several saimin shops on Maui: Kimura’s in Haiku Cannery; Hanafuda in Kihei; Kitada’s Kau Kau Korner in Makawao and House of Saimin in Lahaina. I also drank a whole lot more than I usually do. I never had a hangover. It made me wonder if saimin dashi is to hangovers what a clove of garlic is to vampires. I felt invincible! Another round for all my friends! Kimura’s and Hanafuda are both new shops, but they already have the patina and reputation of well-established local eateries. Both serve excellent saimin—with or without barbecue sticks on the side. At Kimura’s, the specialty is roast pork. Everything is made from scratch and contains no MSG. Hanafuda lets you throw almost anything into your saimin bowl, including kim chee. Because it’s open late—until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday—Hanafuda attracts more of a Kihei party crowd. Think post-Hapa’s. Currently, Kimura’s serves only breakfast and lunch, attracting more families and workers on their lunch break. Popular stand-bys Kitada’s, Kau Kau Korner and House of Saimin are strictly old school. At Kitada’s, you can get cheeseburgers and plate lunch, but the saimin is a big draw. The walls are covered with newspaper clippings and autographed photos from local celebs like Frank De Lima. You grab a soda out of the old-style fridge and sit at long picnic-style tables or wellworn booths. If you’ve lived here longer than three years and haven’t made the trip upcountry for breakfast or lunch at Kitada’s, you’re missing out on a local legend and a real piece of Hawaii’s history. House of Saimin opens late in the day and stays open late for those A-List club hoppers staggering out of Moose’s after last call. It’s cheap and just what the doctor ordered, dude! Once inside one of these venerable establishments, you may elect to choose a pure, unadulterated saimin or go wild with one of its many spin-offs: the won ton min, the katsu curry min, the dashi-free “dry min,” the one with the barbecue stick on the side or the one with the extra char siu. Saimin is such an adaptable little nosh. It’s hard not to love it. If there’s an art to preparing saimin, there’s also an art to eating it. Approach the bowl with confidence, with gusto, chopsticks raised expectantly in one hand, plastic soupspoon poised in the other. Submerge spoon in broth about halfway, so there’s some extra room. Grab noodles with chopsticks; gently set noodles into spoon so that the noodles coil like a Marrakech cobra. Bring spoon to mouth. Suck. Slurp loudly. Continue until all solid materials have been consumed. Set aside both chopsticks and spoon. Pick up bowl and slurp up remaining broth. Burping is optional. If you’re a homebody like I am and you want to make your own saimin, visit your neighbor. Bring some cookies or beer and just try to sweet talk a recipe out of ‘em. No can? Go down to Ooka. Buy one big case of Sapporo Ichiban Ramen; cook about seven packs at once. Throw in fishcake. Throw in green onion. Oh, maybe some leftover mochiko chicken. A half a can of spam. Three-day-old omelette you brought home from breakfast on Sunday. Don’t overcook the noodles! When friends tell you it’s so ono, you tell them it’s your special secret recipe. I nevah going tell.

The classiest general store you’ll ever visit Hali’imaile General Store is a former mercantile establishment for a plantation community sitting out in the middle of nowhere. Incredibly, amazingly, it somehow became one of Hawaii’s most acclaimed restaurants. You definitely want to dine there. Bev Gannon founded the place 1987. Hali’imaile calls its food “eclectic American with Asian overtones.” Located smack-dab in the middle of the island just a couple of miles up Haleakala Highway, these days this is a general store in name only. The décor is exactly what you might find at the classiest general store you’ll ever visit—etched glass above the bar, solid wood fixtures, fancy artwork lining the walls and a merchandise section with quality pottery and collectibles. Painted yellow walls, open windows allowing a gentle breeze and a high ceiling complete the scene. While the flowers on the tables aren’t real, there is an understated elegance to a place that once served as post office/butcher department/hay and feed vendor for the whole area. Dinner began with a bottle of wine.
Each month the restaurant features an obscure vineyard that produces an exceptional wine. This month it’s Bonny Doon. My dining companion Lauren knows wine and she found the chardonnay rich and woody. A cold beer would’ve made me just as happy. We’re in a general store, right?! Always a sucker for sushi, we began the meal with a spicy ahi roll. Fresh lilikoi, avocado, and shiso salad combine to form a tangy dish that’s more than just a tuna roll. Sushi chef Lizette said the “offsetting flavors” are what makes this roll unique. It was exactly what you would expect for a $13 tuna roll. With an array of island salads and appetizers to choose from, I opted for the Asian Pear and Duck Tostado. Basically it’s a spiced duck confit with sun-dried cranberries, carrot, jicama, won bok slaw, toasted macadamia nuts and a ginger chili cream dressing. Practically a meal, this appetizer is perfect for two and really demonstrates the flair with which the chefs present their creations. It tastes as good as it looks, but I should probably have my head examined for passing on the Lobster and Edemame salad. Blame it on the wine. Choosing a main course wasn’t easy. Ahi ($32), cooked medium rare and served with grilled Kula corn, jasmine rice and a red bell pepper sauce. She found it “scandalously tasty,” observing that, “the goat cheese and tuna are remarkably complimentary.” While any chef will tell you that chicken is one of the hardest dishes to do right, Haili’imaile has it down. At our server Dana’s recommendation, I choose the Brick-Roasted Breast of Chicken ($22). Seasoned to an unpretentious perfection, the chicken is the perfect spokesmeal for a general store. No mystery here, it’s just chicken dressed with a honey-dijon sauce and served over garlic-wilted spinach and creamy mashed potatoes. The meal concluded with a fabulous crème brulee and their signature pineapple upsidedown cake. Having finished the bottle of wine, we sipped a German dessert wine and a cognac while pondering what makes this converted general store so appealing. As a restaurant it’s won nearly every culi-

nary award in the state including “best restaurant” and “best chef,” and has enjoyed rave reviews in Food & Wine and Bon Appetit. But as for what might set this restaurant apart besides the perfect presentation, unparalleled service, and a subtly sophisticated setting, I can’t really say. “It’s an anomaly,” claimed Bar Manager Tim Garcia, “how what began as a simple takeout deli has evolved over 15 years into one of the island’s premiere eateries.” Hali’imaile General Store is located at 900 Hali’imaile Road. Sunny Or how much do you really know about your friendly neighborhood dance teacher? Twice a week in a light-filled room overlooking the Hana Highway, Sunny Gorg stretches, sweats and molds her students into dancers of music video caliber. But the sprightly 30-year-old dance instructor has a sack load of credentials from academies, studios and performances both on the mainland and around the world. She’s also shared the stage with an eclectic crowd of fairly well-known personalities: Melissa Ethridge, Uma Thurman, Ice Cube, Ben Stiller, Lenny Kravitz, Queen Latifah, and, of course, Shaquille O’Neal. Like 1995, when she was in Belize for a Michael Bolton video. “We were on top of this pyramid wearing white, sheer clingy stuff, and we were in water,” she said. “We hung out with Michael Bolton all day. He was totally friendly.” A natural performer from a young age,

Gorg’s dream was humble: “I wanted to be a movie star.” She remembers designing and staging elaborate productions for captive audiences in her family’s California backyard. “I would have fashion shows with my girlfriends, I’d build [runways] with planks and bricks,” she said. In third grade, she “directed a play and made all the kids do it with me.” Gorg attended her first ballet class when she was barely 7 years old. Already leaning toward the faster, livelier style of popular performers, she asked her mother if she could take jazz dance instead. “I grew up watching musicals,” she said. “I was influenced and drawn to flair and strong styles of dance.” After high school, Gorg wasted little time. She immediately signed with an agency in Los Angeles and soon found a number of wideopen doors, especially in the music industry. “I ended up doing a lot of music videos,” she said. A few years later, Gorg spent nine months dancing “live, five nights a week” in Italy. And once, she got the chance to see the “quiet, sweet side” of Lil’ Kim. Other shoots were memorable for different reasons. “The funniest music video I ever worked on was for Chris Rock,” she said. “It was for a song entitled ‘I Love Champagne.’ He was hilarious!” In 1998, she choreographed a music video for Queen Latifah that was shot in the dusty California desert.
“It was basically a disaster,” she said laughing. “It was so hot, no water, they didn’t feed us. It didn’t work out.” Once while on location in Latin America for a Sony Mexico commercial, she contracted a nasty bout of Montezuma’s Revenge from a salad. In pain all night, she got no sleep whatsoever. Of course, that didn’t stop her from shooting the commercial the next morning. “I had to stand for nine and a half hours while they spray painted me,” she said. “And then I had to dance.” Producers shut down another shoot in Hollywood when a swelling, alcohol-fueled crowd of bystanders got out of hand. Gorg never envisioned herself a teacher, but she is, leading a group of eager students through biweekly lessons in “Urban Dance Funk,” her unique form of fusion-style dance. The island where she spent many years as a child was on her mind when the luster of Hollywood faded. “I would dream about it at night, and I’d keep pictures of it around,” she said. Following a trip to Maui in January 2002, she decided to relocate. “I had a good situation, but I [got] the opportunity to have a better life for myself,” she said. “I could go [back] to L.A. or New York for a little stint, but it’s so ALIVE here.” Besides teaching twice a week, Gorg is a card-carrying member of the dance troupe Deva, models on Oahu and writes music. She still harbors rock star dreams, hoping to sing

Metal Machine Movie The Matrix War Ends Macro Micro The breathtaking finale of the Wachowski Brothers’s epic Matrix trilogy is a cascading visual bombardment of intense action and exquisite special effects that will leave audiences drained to their core. Neo (Keanu Reeves) returns from his comatose exile, in the no man’s land between the Matrix and the Machine world, to rejoin with his dear Trinity (Carrie Anne Moss) and attempt a journey to the ominous Machine City while the Zion military simultaneously battle a swarming invasion of Sentinel machines.

(Jada Pinkett Smith) as she masterfully flies their hovercraft toward the raging battle deep in the belly of Zion. A meeting with the once enigmatic, but now ordinary, Oracle (Mary Alice) reveals Neo’s perpetual quest for truth to be nothing more than accepting the commitment of his choices and the unknowable price they dictate. There is some joyful audience compensation in the union of Neo and Trinity as a real couple that gives some earthy relief to the movie. But small narrative threads from past plot points are left hanging, such as the silver spoon that Neo was given in Reloaded, which is never addressed in Revolutions. Most at stake in Revolutions is visually describing the landscape of the Matrix and the Machine
The ubiquitous rogue Machine program Smith (Hugo Weaving) represents an allconsuming number of clones that Neo must fight in a climatic fistfight duel that is a brilliant realization of comic book action. Even though compelling secondary characters like the Merovingian (Lambert Wilson) and Persephone (Monica Bellucci) get far too little attention, The Matrix: Revolutions is a daunting and sweeping cinematic achievement, equivalent to riding five big roller coasters in quick succession. There isn’t quite as much joy of curiosity in The Matrix: Revolutions as there was in the first two installments because now the characters are fully established and are put to work in their assigned job categories. Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne), the once self-assured and mysterious Matrix mentor, spends most of the movie as a humble co-pilot to Niobe

visual stimulus and politically thematic implications at play. At the heart of the Matrix films, the Wachowski Brothers have said, is their hope for a synthesis of our finite knowledge of what is, with our infinite beliefs of what might be. The macro framework of The Matrix Trilogy is built around a war of technology against flesh-and-bone humanity. It’s only when an integrated model of man-and-machine confronts the crisis that a reverberating message of peace is heard. While the price of that peace is unknowable, the greater question of how to coexist with the mechanical monsters we create comes down to a simple choice. The Matrix movies have been rolled into a religion by rabid fans, but demand much less interpretation to comprehend. The metaphor of metal against flesh in a game played by a couple of selfish individuals is not lost on any one anywhere. The Matrix found the One, and he in turn found the Machines and spoke to them. world, and depicting the saturated level to which the machine monsters and the ever-replicating Agent Smiths dominate every available millimeter of space. Smith is now beyond control of the Machines, and invades even the hovercraft that Neo and Trinity fly to the above ground world of the Machines. Agent Smith is now a threat to the Machines as a powerful malignant virus. But just as Smith’s powers have advanced, so too have Neo’s, and his willingness to make himself a conduit to both the power of the Matrix and the Machines, makes for a stunning episode when he comes face to face with the Deus Ex Machina at the film’s poignant climax. The audience finally gets an entire view of the Machine world juxtaposed against the underworld of Zion, and is guided by the filmmakers to appreciate the lush blue skies and bright sun that we sit under everyday. There is a point in the third act when the extravagant spectacle of so many special effects culminates in a drug-like experience that challenges your senses as a spectator to digest the enormity of

The Shift of Ages Thing Saturday, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at Camp Maluhia Boy Scout Camp The lunar eclipse on Saturday is apparently a very big deal. The stars will be aligned in such a way that God-Consciousness will descend upon this plane and offer humans a moment in time to rise up and meet it. Some people are calling it the Shift of Ages since, “it opens an energetic stargate to the Ascension of Mother Earth and each of her inhabitants.” Starr Fuentes, a famous psychic, will show people how to take full advantage of this opportunity by guiding participants to activate the 90% of their brain that is not being used. It will be a who’s who of North Maui and a perfect excuse for neighbors to get together to eat, drink and have fun. This 21+, private fundraiser for PYCC raises the standard for North Shore parties with live music by Dr. Nat and Hot Apple Pie and, of course, great food and drink. All the best restaurants in the area will be represented and the Wine Corner will sponsor a fine beer and wine tasting with all proceeds benefiting PYCC. Excellent art will be donated by famous Maui artists and gift certificates for excursions, activities, and merchandise can be obtained at the silent auction. JOE’S TOP FIVE Picking my top five favorite CDs is a tall order. I’ve been reviewing world music CDs but my tastes run the whole spectrum. I grew up listening to classic rock, punk, hardcore and hip-hop. Some unlikely albums that sent me in many different directions have influenced me. I first got really into non-U.S. music while living in Miami. When I started writing about music as a reporter in Caracas, Venezuela, my musical horizons broadened even further. Seeing heavy hitters like Tito Puente, Burning Spear, Thomas Mapfumo, Caetano Veloso, Chucho Valdez, Manu Chao, Los Pericos, and Los Amigos Invisibles in concert inspired me to seek out the best music from around the globe. I’m proud to share the most fascinating, funky, international music with people at Jacques in Paia, where on Wednesday nights I become DJ El Gato and present these treasures for everyone to enjoy.
THE BEASTIE BOYS “PAUL’S BOUTIQUE” For me it all started with The Beasties and Grand Royal Magazine. I’ve probably listened to this album more than any other. Figuring out where the samples came from turned me on to reggae and funk and showed me how complex the Beasties’ influences are. They sampled Sly and the Family Stone, the Beatles, Johnny Cash, Mountain, Black Flag and many more that still elude me. All this aside, Paul’s Boutique gets the party started. “Hey Ladies,” “Shake Your Rump” and “Shadrach” get the ass shakin’. “3-Minute Rule,” “The Sounds of Science,” and especially “B-Boy Bouillabaise” highlight the seamless interplay between Ad Rock, Mike D and MCA, as well as their unique gift of gab. With Paul’s Boutique, The Beasties invented their own genre, showed the universality of music and how different styles can become one. —Capitol Records
BOSSACUCANOVA “REVISITED CLASSICS” BossaCucaNova is composed of three young, inventive DJ/Producers from Rio de Janeiro. Revisited Classics is an album of updated, smooth, soulful themes recorded by new and classic Bossa Nova stars and reconstructed by this creative trio without losing the flavor of the originals. The group’s infectious hiphop and drum ‘n’ bass percussion bring this disc into the New Millennium. In addition, it is the first true Bossa remix project actually produced in Brazil. This CD turned me on to the Brazilian electronica scene, which is the world’s most dynamic and strongly affects the rest of the world’s dance music. Funky remakes of classics, like Baden Powell’s “Berimbau,” highlight the respect for tradition with a sense of musical adventure into the future. —Six Degrees Records
BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS “BABYLON BY BUS” Reggae is the first “world music” to make it really big in the U.S. Bob Marley is a prophet, visionary, freedom fighter and ambassador of positive vibrations. Bob Marley and the Wailers is the door to entering the rich world of obscure reggae tunes and to pique the interest toward the depth of world music. Babylon By Bus documents his spreading of reggae around Europe in 1978. All the classics are here—“Exodus,” “Stir It Up,” “Lively Up Yourself” and more—all performed live with urgency, passion and love. To have seen the man live must have been a transcendental experience and this album proves the band’s intensity and power. —Island Records
VARIOUS ARTISTS “!SABROSO¡ —THE AFRO-LATIN GROOVE” Any percussion-heavy music has its roots in Africa, and Latin music has been celebrating the Afro-Latin groove for 500 years. The music has certainly evolved—when Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians began immigrating to New York, they created a new special sauce. This compilation is the best representation of the amazing Latin grooves of the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. All the best are represented—Willie Bobo, Joe Cuba, Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto and Tito Puente, among others. Eighteen jams demonstrate the funky complexities of Latin Jazz and how it evolved into salsa in the 1970s. This is another CD that opens the eyes and ears to broadening musical horizons. —Rhino Records
THE J.B.’S “FUNKY GOOD TIME: THE ANTHOLOGY” The Godfather of Soul, the Most Exciting Man in Show Business— James Brown —has fomented the funk like no other. The J.B.’s were his tightest backing band ever and created some of the funkiest music of all time to shake your moneymaker. In the early 1970s, these thirteen musicians backed James Brown on his best work and released many of their own instrumental jams. Funky Good Time: The Anthology boasts 30 songs on two CDs and never lets up. “Givin’ Up Food For Funk” is a testament to the band’s enthusiasm. All of the songs highlight The J.B.’s perfect musicianship and harmony with each other, as well as being the hardest, funkiest, most fun music to liven up any party. —Polydor Records MTW

Halloween Hijinks I know everyone’s expecting some huge blowout story about Halloween night but I just don’t have it. To be honest, I feel like Halloween never happened. Sure, I got dressed up, went out, saw some friends that were dressed up, got drunk…and that’s pretty much it. No big story. No huge blow— Oh wait, there was that on-the-edge-of-disaster, almost-RIOT-about-to-happen, with the partying-in-public street crowd and the police that love them. Whew, that was close. And the entrepreneurial entourage of Shelley Buck and her girlfriends, who set up a stage on Front Street, dancing cabaret-style in a cage to the soundtrack of Chicago as their friends Sara and Arge charged hapless passing males for photo ops with the fishnet and bustier-clad hotties. I think they made like $45. Ingenious, girls, really. But I missed all that. I heard reports of an all night Rave in Puunene and a couple of parties in Kaanapali and Haiku. There was a Superhero DJ party in Makawao. A kickass Rocky Horror Picture Show party in Kihei. I saw none of it. My friends told me they were going as Marilyn Monroe, Roller Girl, J-Lo as Jennifer Beals in Flashdance, Zombies, Vampires, Warrior Princesses, Angels, Devils, even the Krispy Kreme Man. Didn’t see ‘em. At home, while I was getting ready I did see the really sweet little clown costume my roommate Rudi had on. It was so cute and colorful and it came with a big fluffy red neck ruffle, a round red nose and those funny clown shoes, huge red suspenders and a charming little horn. He was just so cute… “I’m an evil fucking clown. Real evil,” said Rudi. “I’ll eat your face off.” Okay Rudi. Clowns are scary, I got it. But seriously, what’s up with all the Halloween Hoochie-Mama costumes? The underage hoochies are especially disturbing but I think it’s really funny that women are so stoked to walk down Front Street in a thong and pasties and because they put on a pair of fuzzy ears—oh, she’s a cat! I mean, I’m not complaining, per se—the female form is beautiful and all—I’d just like to see more of a trend in creative and scary costumes. Really frightening stuff. You know, like MEN in g-strings. Yeah… And then, of course, there was Party Boy. My girls Jen and Sonia had to work at Hecock’s on Halloween, but witnessed his antics firsthand. Apparently, Party Boy—you know, from Jackass—walked into the bar and said, “Did I hear someone say ‘PARTY’?!” He then set his boombox down, ripped off his breakaway dance shirt and hopped around the place in his leopard-print g-string and bow tie, as he did his whole bouncing groin dance to the Party Boy soundtrack playing on his mini blaster, much to the delight of, well, everyone really. Who doesn’t love Party Boy? Legend has it that Party Boy began the night as formerly mild-mannered Lahaina Fish Co. server, Dave, approached his table of Japanese tourists while they were dining. “Do you guys like to…PARTY?!” he asked them, as he initially struggled for a few awkward moments with the quick costume change, before he could erupt in Party Boy Dance mode. He eventually got better, though, as he repeatedly ripped off his dance shirt to reveal the ugly truth below. Just kiddin’, Dave. You looked good, man, from what I heard. We love you, Party Boy.
