NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES In June, Reuters profiled Jerri Lyons, 55, of Sebastopol, Calif., who conducts seminars on the legalities and etiquette of do-ityourself funerals, which are supposedly becoming more popular as alternatives to $5,000 funeral home services. According to one Lyons client, personally bathing and dressing a deceased friend made the loss easier to accept. Tip: Ice must be applied after about 24 hours (packages of frozen vegetables OK). A funeral-industry analyst said Lyons was not a threat; of more concern to the industry these days was, as Reuters put it, "a soft mortality rate due in part to a weak flu season."

FAMILY VALUES Child Care by Ultimatum: Norcross, Ga., police arrested parents Khalidan Tunkara, 28, and Olin Washington, 32, after one of whom, following a squabble in a parking lot, left their 9-month-old girl on the ground and drove away, intending to pressure the other parent to take the kid, but that parent then drove off, too (April). The same thing happened with parents Jennifer Jones, 21, and the father of her 3-week-old girl, in front of a beauty salon in Elgin, Ill., where police found the baby in the street (February). The same thing happened with parents Christy Leann Radacy, 23, and the father of her 2year-old twin daughters in Lake Worth, Texas, where police found the girls lying on busy state road 199 (May).

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS Where the Fault Lies: Gilbert D. Walker, 43, arrested (and then released) in Panama City, Fla., after crazily breaking into a neighbor's house and chasing her with a dagger, said the

problem was that he had drunk too much jasmine tea (July). And heroin-cocaine addict Amanda C. Hagan, 29, brought to a Norristown, Pa., hospital after an overdose, said it was the hospital's fault that she shot up again in her bed because it let in the visitor who resupplied her (June). And fired Rochester, N.Y., police officer Clint Jackson, 24, convicted of fondling eight women during traffic stops, said he was contemplating a lawsuit against the police department for inadequate training (July).

UPDATE Tyrone Henry, 30, appeared here in 2000 when arrested in Tucson, Ariz., for running a scheme in which female college students were paid $10 to "test" facial cream but which cream turned out to be Henry's sperm. He was convicted of fraud and sentenced to seven years in prison, but is still (according to a June 2003 Tucson Weekly story) aggressively proclaiming that he violated no law. Argues Henry: The women were adults; there was no sexual contact; they were paid; Henry did not "expose" himself because the girls were blindfolded.

Henry said he was just pursuing "the American dream" with his Web site selling men photos of women's sperm-adorned faces.

OUR CIVILIZATION IN DECLINE In May at the 24 Hour Fitness Center in Englewood, Colo., a 55-year-old client died of a heart attack during a workout, but before the body could be properly removed, several club members continued their workouts less than 6 feet away. And Ukrainian scientists told the Agence France-Presse news service in April that worms that survived the 1986 nuclear accident at Chernobyl (where radioactivity is still 100 times higher than normal) are more reproductively active than they were before the disaster.

JIMMY PERRY, DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS AN D WASTE MANAGEMENT HIGHWAY DIVISION, HANA DISTRICT SUPERVISOR 1. I was born and raised in Hana. I have been working for the Highway Division for 35 years. We mainly deal with maintenance and construction.

2. The peace and quiet. The people are really friendly and helpful. They live day to day instead of a dog-eat-dog world.

3. It’s a beautiful road, a beautiful drive. The scenery is immaculate - rainforests and waterfalls.

4. No, I personally think it should remain the way it is. It gives you a serene feeling and lets you know you are headed some place precious. I think it should stay the same.

5. I don’t think there would be a huge impact. It would allow in bigger trucks with double lanes. We may run into trouble with

the bridge weight. For me I don’t want to see the expansion.

Or are you one of those freaks that gets off on women's shoes? I worked real hard to buy those shoes. I loved those shoes. I really miss those shoes. The thought of some mutant doing ungodly things to my beloved platform slippers with the silver metal things on the straps really creeps me out. I really hope you love those shoes, because if I see you walking down the street in my shoes I will stop you and take back my shoes.

Liberation Of The Unwilling Why Bush Won’t Help Liberia “If war is forced upon us,” Bush once proclaimed, “we will liberate the people of Iraq from a cruel and violent dictator.” Now Liberia, a nation founded by former American slaves and whose Constitution, flag, language and civil administration are modeled on those of the United States, is deteriorating as a bloody civil war devolves into total anarchy.

Close to a thousand civilians have died, caught in the crossfire between government and rebel forces, during the last few days alone. Here is Bush’s stirring message of hope for the miserable people of Liberia: “We continue to monitor the situation very closely.”

First we attacked Iraq, which posed no threat, while ignoring North Korea, which did. Taking a stance which defies common decency and common sense, we’re now stiff-arming people who are literally dying for our help--while forcing ourselves on others who are willing to die to avoid our presence. Apparently, whether or not Bush “liberates” you has nothing to do with how badly your country needs liberation.

Last fall, government and talk-radio loudmouths claimed that they had the power to read the hearts and minds of Iraq’s 25,000,000 citizens. Now the results of their intelligence failure are in: Iraqis prefer Saddam’s homegrown autocracy to our 148,000 infidel storm troopers. They’re voting with mines, rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s in ambushes so frequent that the media doesn’t bother to report them until someone gets killed.

Graffiti covers the walls of Iraqi cities: “Pray for Saddam's victory because he's a genuine Iraqi." “May the occupation fall and may Saddam return.”

The resistance owns the highways, the alleys and the nights, forcing hapless American forces to scurry in convoys between their cantonments. On average they kill one of our soldiers every day--152 so far--and cripple another half-dozen.

Iraqi collaborators are executed nightly.

They’re sending a clear message to the American people: get your Kevlar-coated goons out. Sunni imams in Fallujah, The Los Angeles Times reported on July 15, rejected food from soldiers of the Third Infantry Division. “We would rather eat rocks than eat chickens from Americans,” one cleric said. “Even the poorest person in Fallujah doesn’t want chickens from you.”

Children threw rocks at the U.S. soldiers as they retreated with their proffered poultry.

We haven’t lost as many young men and women in Afghanistan, but that’s because fewer are there to begin with: a mere 10,000, most of whom are holed up at Kabul’s Bagram air base. Before the October 2001 invasion, Bush decided against posting peacekeepers in the 95 per-

cent of the country that needed them; now Afghanistan belongs to warlords and their tribal militias. And we’re not winning popularity contests even in the rump city-state of Kabul.

Hamid Karzai’s puppet regime is broke, and the tiny amount of U.S. aid went entirely to nongovernment organizations, which spent it on SUVs and fancy offices. Nothing substantial has been rebuilt for ordinary Afghans. “N.G.O.," spat an unpaid Kabul cop at The New York Times’ Khaled Hosseini. "What have they done for us? I have yet to see them put two bricks together." Twenty peacekeepers have been killed so far in Afghanistan, meaning that that assignment offers roughly the same 1-in-400 odds of dying as a one-year tour of duty in Iraq.

Regime change in Liberia, on the other hand, would be a cakewalk. Unlike Iraq and Afghanistan, the country has a strong historical connection with us--streets and airports are named after U.S. presidents, and the American dollar is the national currency. Liberian strongman Charles Taylor has promised to go into

Taylor’s only demand is that we show up to avoid a power vacuum after he steps down, but Bush--who hasn’t learned from the chaos in Baghdad--has refused.

Considering recent history, sending in the Marines would also be the right thing to do.

President Reagan and Bush’s father funded a military coup in 1980 that led to Taylor’s 1989 seizure of power and a seven-year-long civil war that killed more than 200,000 people.

American taxpayers funded that carnage; they should now help end it.

The trouble is, Liberia doesn’t fit into BushCheney’s policy of “total energy dominance.”

That’s why a White House determined to invade Syria and Iran during its second term has only dispatched a few dozen soldiers to guard the U.S. embassy. While neighboring countries have an estimated 60 billion barrels of oil in all, Liberia itself possesses insignificant reserves. Iraq, on the other hand, is the world’s second largest oil-producing state. And the U.S. invaded Afghanistan principally as a conduit to the oil- and gas-rich Caspian Sea. Hopefully Bush will cave into public pressure by transferring a significant troop complement from Iraq and Afghanistan to Liberia.

Until then, Liberia’s best hope is striking oil.

The Hawaiian Canoe Club still knows how to win. They've taken the state championships on Kaua`i in 2001, the Big Island in 2002, and now the state championship on Oahu this year. There is even talk of an HCC dynasty.

"There was a real sense of unity between all of the clubs from Maui," said Johnny Mack, coach of HCC's women.

"All of the teams got together at the beginning to say a prayer and chant. We created a bond between all of the clubs from Maui that made us strong as an island. We were like one whole team rooting for Maui to do good as a whole. You could see the difference our opening and closing ceremonies made between us and the clubs from other islands."

Or as Women's Novice B coach Iokepa Naole put it, "We are still in shock after three wins in a row."

It's no wonder. HCC showed up with an impressive 36 out of 37 crews qualified to compete, the most ever from one club at the state championships. Going into the race, HCC was favored but with tight competition from Kai 'Opua of the Big Island, which ended up in third place with 290 points to Kailua's 291. HCC dominated with 331. Kihei Canoe Club came in 8th place in the AAA Division and Wailea won the A Division.

HCC won gold in the 13 Girls, 14 Girls, and the crew of George Dagan, Mael Carey, Rick Nu'u, Tyson Kubo, John B. Guard and Stewart Kawakami did their part by winning the men's freshman race.

points, but this time around it was a wellrounded team effort. The Women's Novice B, for example, scored a lot of points with their Silver Medal finish.

"We were really confident going in because we've been building a solid foundation all year," says Iokepa Naole. "I knew the girls were getting faster, even though they were second to Kihei all year. I was sure they would peak at States because the girls are dedicated, technical, and have been doing extra practices.

These girls are fit but petite and were up against huge girls from other clubs who are elite athletes. We are all totally stoked."

This team of Alice Luther, Debbie Genobia, Maria Oliveira, Cristiana Fisher, Itana Silva, and Thatiana Remor is unique in that four Brazilian girls compete in this traditional Hawaiian sport. "Our group of six has bonded well and works as a small, harmonious unit," said Luther. "We felt good together, and ready to do our job."

The regatta took place at Ke'ehi Lagoon on Oahu, which was transformed into a wash of colorful tents amidst a carnival-like atmosphere. There were 10,000 people in attendance, and 3000 paddlers.

"Our crew had a heightened energy so we stole away from the crowd to warm up and focus our thoughts," said Luther. "When the first fleet of magnificent koa canoes took to the water and lined up as far as the eye could see, it was a sight to behold. It was then that I fully realized the magnitude of the event within its cultural framework. This is one of those experiences that will always stay with me. There was a tremendous energy there and excitement was everywhere. All of the Maui clubs drew together in Oahu in the true spirit of Aloha."

Hawaii State Windsurfing Championships The Race Series at Kanaha Beach Park always attracts a mellow, family crowd and the diverse windsurfing community.

August 2 was no different. It was a sunny, balmy Saturday, attracting many racers and their friends and families to cheer them on.

"It was an awesome day," said organizer Kim Ball. "The wind held up throughout the day, which doesn't always happen. The level of competition was also really high."

The day brought in cool kids who start racing young, committed guys over 55, people from all over the world and the U.S., as well as a few dedicated women.

Reggae tunes were in the air as spectators drank beer before noon. Racers even found the time to knock a couple back at the lunch break. Between races, some wise guy gave his dog and then his kid little rides back and forth on his board.

Moderate winds characterized the

morning races, organized by age group. But big gusts powered the final morning heat, making things more interesting. Some racers got caught in the open with bigger sails and there were more than a few wipeouts.

"I take all of the races very seriously, but it is basically about having fun," said Malcolm Hirabayashi, the winner of the men's 19-39 division. "I was lucky today. I've been looking at Alf's back all summer and today was up and down. The last gust really pushed me through."

Hirabayashi, a three-year Maui resident from Japan, represents the cultural diversity in the windsurfing scene. There are other racers from Japan, Jacques Pauvert from France, some Australians, New Zealanders, Californians, Michiganders, and of course many Hawaiians here trying to take the title back to one of the other islands.

"The local boys are fast and it's tough to beat them," said Hirabayashi. "The more people we

Alex Aguerra won the Pro Division, Nick Warmuth won the Juniors, and Tom Cherry won the Men's 50-54 Division for the sixth time in a row.

"It is a really neat event and I've had fun doing it throughout the years," said Cherry.

"I've been lucky too. Kim Ball and Rick Vetromile deserve a lot of thanks for putting on such an enjoyable event. We had a great turnout and the wide variety of contestants from around the world, the other islands and the mainland make it very cool. This is the longest running slalom event in the world. You just can't do it anywhere else but Maui."

Windsurfing is a male-dominated sport, but women are increasingly appearing at the competitive level. Karla Aguerra won the women's open division and represents the girl power element.

"Women are more competitive between each other than men are," said Aguerra. "You have to be mentally together and physically strong because racing can be intimidating.

More women would also lead to more kids out here. We make it more social and family oriented like a picnic. It's good to race as a family, if you're alone it is tough." MTW

The film became an international success after its release in 1966, and took on legendary status as a faithful representation of surfing ideals and philosophies, that remains to this day a touchstone for anyone seeking a window into surfing’s excitement or "stoke" (joy). Bruce Brown's son was named after his birthplace in Dana Point, California, and was just 4-years-

old when "The Endless Summer" took cinema audiences to mysterious secluded beaches all over the world on a two-man quest for the perfect wave.

This past spring, an audience of over 3000 savored the thrill of the stoke in Dana Brown's debut surfing feature documentary "Step Into Liquid" at Barry Rivers' Maui Film Festival.

"Step Into Liquid" captures the wide-ranging popularity of surfing around the globe with groups of amateur surfers in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and Galveston, Texas, to pros that

tackle famously enormous breaks, like at "Jaws" on the north shore of Maui. But, more significantly, the film reveals a compassionate ethos at the heart of surfing. From pro surfers like Laird Hamilton (featured in the recent James Bond film), Peter "Condor" Mel (Mavericks) or Keala Kennelly to unknown surf folk like Dale Webster (who's surfed everyday for over 20 years), the movie threads a unifying path across waves in California, Costa Rica, Ireland, Rapa Nui, Tahiti.

royalty but he's also a humble family man who's still in love with the ocean and the endless variety of waves it produces. I caught up with Dana at the Blue Fin lounge in Times Square on a hot and rainy Manhattan afternoon to talk about his movie.

CS: On the night before I saw "Step Into Liquid," I saw a great pool skating documentary called "Chlorine," and I was struck by the connection between these daredevils looking for the same kind of "stoke" from the ride. On one hand you've got underground pool skaters constantly ducking cops and angry residents, and then in your movie you've got guys surfing on tiny river waves in Sheboygan. How did you find those guys?

DB: My friend Evan Slater, the editor of "Surfing Magazine," said "Well, you know about the Dairyland Surf Classic in Shaboygan, Wisconsin?" I'd kind of heard that there was some surfing in Lake Michigan, but I didn't realize there was a subculture unto itself. So we went to the Classic but kind of didn't mention it (in the film) because everything else took precedent because it was more about the community.

CS: Where do those guys get surfboards in Wisconsin?

DB: There's a surf shop in Chicago.

There's not a surf shop in Sheboygan, but they collect everything. They had garages full of surf stuff and they love it. They sit there and talk about "remember that one day in '82" you know about this little two-foot wave. But they keep scrapbooks full of Polaroids and

they're completely sold on what they have even though they've never even seen a pipeline. When you see a pipeline in person it just scares the snot out of you. No movie can ever really do it justice.

CS: How old were you when your dad first plopped you on a surfboard?

DB: The first time I was probably just sitting on one, I was probably six months old, but riding pipe - probably 4 or 5 years old. I think I rode a surfboard before I rode a bike.

CS: What's the biggest wave you've ever surfed?

DB: Probably 15 foot. But I got to the point where I scared myself pretty good and just went "that's it," whatever level those guys (surfing bigger waves) want to do is cool.

CS: What's your idea of fun surfing?

DB: Head high and with your friends where it's not crowded. I'm more of an esthetic guy. I still like to surf with my kids and my dad and my brother. We go to a nice point break and shout at each other and make up stories. It's a nice way to spend the day. When you're done you feel rejuvenated.

CS: This is your first feature documentary. Did you purposely wait until the right time to do it after working on your dad's films?

DB: Yeah. I had my first camera when I was 10. My dad wouldn't even let me get film unless I made storyboards. So I was making

films all along as a teenager and I went to college as a film major. I didn't like the idea of going to L.A. to become a production assistant and have your ass handed to you for five years and if you're lucky, kiss enough ass to get somewhere. So I became a freelance writer and got a job as a sports columnist. I was doing all right but it dawned on me that I had to write faster. I had to labor over it; I couldn't really crank it out fast enough to make a real good living. By that time, I'd gotten married and had a couple of kids, and dad asked me to put his old surf films back together when I was 29.

CS: What exactly did your dad ask you to do with his films?

DB: Well, he made four or five movies like "Slippery When Wet," "Barefoot Adventure" and Surfing Hollow Days" before he made "Endless Summer." So, from those, pieces were missing and the soundtracks were in disrepair. So I had to go back to these kind of archival yellow prints and look at how it was made originally and find missing bits and pieces, and recreate music that might have been lost. I was learning it in this archival way, but you learn out of surgery, by a lot of piecing together somebody else's stuff and seeing exactly how they did it. Then I worked on some other projects and then "Endless Summer 2" came up. I wouldn't have thought that I'd pick a surf film to do because I had the utmost respect for "Endless Summer," and even doing "Endless Summer 2" the hardest thing was living in a shadow. It's like a religion or something - it's kind of scary. But "Step Into Liquid" started to fall together, and I thought, well why wouldn't I do something like this?

CS: One of the things I like about "Step Into Liquid" is the contrast between the different types of surfers. Among the pro guys, Taj Burrow really pops out of the movie in the Australian sequences.

DB: Well, our thought was that we wanted to touch on pro surfing, which is a slippery slope, because you don't have to be the best surfer in the world to be the champ. But I think that Taj probably is the best surfer in the world. He's the most popular surfer in Australia. I don't know how he pops the board out of the water like he does. He's one of those guys that stand out, and he's a really sweet guy. His parents live down the hill from him and they all go surfing together. It sounds kind of corny, like something from Mayberry R.F.D. but it's very sweet.

CS: With surfing taking on a higher profile in movies and lifestyles, you hear stories about guys who aren't experienced enough taking on waves that they don't have any business tackling.

DB: Yeah, even the best (surfers) can get it, I just hope that you're smart enough to see it and feel it and know what you can't handle.

You've got to be able to get shoved 30 feet under the water and survive, and not panic.

You might be athletically good enough to stand up on the board, but the ocean's way bigger than you: it kills you and doesn't even know it. It doesn't hold a grudge -- it just does you in. I think it's why surfers tend to be so humble. It's human nature to try and impose your will on things, but you're not gonna do it to the ocean at all. MTW

In Spain, the word “mambo” is slang for the chemistry that exists between two people—that unspoken spark lingering among lovers. Slap that slang on a plate and you get Café Mambo, Baldwin Avenue’s new bistro on the block.

Café Mambo has the potential to ignite some sparks, if only in scene alone. Walk in the place and you’ll swear you’re in Havana. The walls are splattered with bold mustard yellows and sensual lime

greens, the tables merging stark wood with smooth mosaic. Whirling ceiling fans whip your skin. Lusty Latin beats blare in your booty.

The air is alive and electric.

But you’re not in Cuba. Not even close.

You’re still in Paia. In fact, there’s nothing even remotely Cuban about the menu.

“It’s always been somewhat of a problem to categorize our cuisine here,” said co-owner Jamie Betham. “I’d say it’s a mix of Mediterranean and Mexican with Moorish influences.”

Most of the selections originate from Spain.

But they also serve fajitas from Mexico, Falafel from the Middle East, Bruschetta from Italy, and a crispy duck confit prepared by way of France.

Did I mention the owners are from England?

I ordered the spinach mushroom fajitas—a favorite, which is understandable. They’re a mouthy medley of plump portabellos and garlic-flavored greens ($9). Mambo also offers your standard choice of chicken and steak fajitas, and your not-so-standard mahi mahi and duck, which my server says are a big hit, assuming, of course, that you do duck.

It’s hard to foul up fajitas, but Mambo makes a better than average presentation.

They deliver a full palate of fresh fixin’s to load up your flour canvas—a mild red salsa, chunky guacamole, gooey black beans. With the exception of the tortillas, they make everything fresh and in-house. The side salad is a simple bed of zesty-mixed greens, yet it also features red onions, pine nuts and a sweet mango dressing.

For dinner, they serve a full tapas menu. Take your pick of tasty tiny dishes including grilled chorizo sausage, Spanish tortilla omelet, seafood salad and queso fundido, a cheese fondue with dipping bread. For those mired in indecision, try the mixed tapas platter for a reasonable nine bucks.

They also do paella ($12), a saffron-soaked combo of chicken, chorizo, shrimp and calamari. Paella in Paia. Get it? Huh? Whatever.

Betham says the paella is his personal favorite, but my dining companion called it “flavorful but fair.” Once a Brazilian restaurant owner told me paella should “smell like the sea.” I asked my friend what she thought, but she said it just tasted like chicken. Considering this might be the only paella you’ll find on Maui, it’s your best bet.

Café Mambo is located where Picnics Restaurant used to be, and they continue the long tradition of take-out with a few picnics to go for the Hana-bound ($8-$10). The menu also offers a mean breakfast—fluffy waffles, fruit salad and a crunchy granola/yogurt creation.

Mambo still lacks a liquor license, but the menu welcomes you to bring your own beer or bottle. The prices will keep you from going broke on an evening out. Just be nice and don’t hog the tables all night while you’re boozing it up with your buddies. MTW

Baileyana Sauvignon Blanc

2001 Edna Valley, California The Baileyana Winery is located in the Edna Valley of San Luis Obispo County. The brand was founded by Cathrine Niven, who together with her husband Jack, were the pioneers, introducing grapes to the Edna Valley. Cathrine was one of the original wine women of America and to this day the winery is still a traditional small winery focused on quality not quantity.

This bright and lively Sauvignon Blanc displays classic varietal character with an abundance of flowery aromas and herbal notes. This wine is crisp with hints of citrus, green apple and grapefruit that remain vibrant all the way through to a long finish.

Three Nights Of Pure Tahitian Polynesian dancing comes to Maui In the beginning and end of every luau, there is a dance that really lights up the crowd, gets their hearts beating and gets the boys sweating. It comes all the way from Tahiti. Thanks to Keolamia "Lolita" Eugenio, Keli'i Kaua and a team of dedicated volunteers, Maui will get its very own glimpse into this hip swaying dance that captivates us like no other.

The Heiva I Maui Tahiti fete is now in its sixth year. It has done so well the event is now three nights instead of just two. It features dancers from all over

Hawaii and California. Lolita and Keli'i originally started the program to bring the Tahitian culture to Maui. Now Keli'i acts as a director and Lolita does the grunt work of running a non-profit organization.

Friday night is dedicated to more than 70 solo dancers. A house drummer will play a number of traditional and contemporary beats while the judges watch to see how well the dancers know their stuff. It's both nerve-racking and exciting for all who watch, but no one has more pressure than the dancers. For the keiki, the drummers will play more of the basic

and traditional beats. Older dancers will have to keep up with the more contemporary and difficult rhythms. All the traditional beats are danced flat-footed while the contemporary beats are danced on tiptoe. No one really knows why, but most believe it comes from the old French traditions the Tahitians picked up.

Pair and group dancers will dominate the rest of the event, as well as the 'otea, where the drummers will compete as some dancers perform. Four halaus are entered in the group competition, but one halau has come from Kauai to do a presentation for the viewers.

The event will be held at the War Memorial Gym Complex in Wailuku on Friday, August 8 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, August 9 & 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Disney's original "Freaky Friday" (1976) remains a fond memory in many people's minds, so it's appropriate that this modern update falls into that rare category of respectable remakes. Dr. Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis - "A Fish Called Wanda") is a widowed mother of two children, busy preparing for her upcoming wedding while her 15-year-old, guitar-loving daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan) has to fight tooth and nail for every scrap of dignity that she can get. Things get exceedingly tricky when a spell-casting matron at a Chinese restaurant intercedes between the bickering mother and daughter to impose a role reversal that puts the two on opposite equal footing. This sincere and fun-loving comedy hits all the right notes with a great soundtrack and comic bits that incur much chuckling and humming from its audience.

Anna has a full plate of problems. She needs more sleep, her little brother is a

pest, and her rock band "Pink Slip" desperately needs a gig. On top of all this, her former best friend at school has been making sure that Anna spends her afternoons in detention, and her mom is about to marry Mr. Milquetoast from Albuquerque (Mark Harmon). But Anna's mom won't listen to any excuses. Tess Coleman is a hotshot shrink with a new book - note the book's slyly referential cover and title "Through The Looking Glass, Senescence In Retrograde."

Tess is crossing a line in middle age when sex gets a low priority, far down the list from things like meditating. But Tess's new-age-matron shoes get considerably tighter when she awakens to find herself in her daughter's body.

"Freaky Friday" works perfectly as a mental gymnastic comedic exercise. There's a satisfying thrill in imagining and seeing a 45-year-old woman struggle in the body of her 15-year-old daughter and vice versa. When Anna, in Tess's body, looks in her wallet for the first time since the change over, she regards her credit cards as perfect tools for self-expression. Her makeover-shopping spree pays off when she has to go on a television talk show to promote her stuffy book and ends up transforming the studio audience into a bunch of rock mentality groupies. Alternately, Anna ends up relying on Tess to play her guitar solo at a gig in front of a crowd of quickly adoring fans.

It took the collaboration of screenwriters Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon to create the synergy of opposing wills that find Anna reassessing her mother's choice in husband material, and Tess taking a closer look at her daughter's incipient sexuality. The movie dares to do a neat tight rope act with Anna's romantic interest Jake (Chad Michael Murray), carrying his attraction for Anna over into some serious flirting with her in the older body of Tess. This little subplot fantasy gives a nod to middle aged women in the audience who will get a saucy giggle at the sight of young guy smitten with a female maturity that he can only guess at.

Director Mark Waters ("The House Of Yes") keeps a strong emphasis on the film's feel good music, which includes up-tempo versions of "What A Wonderful World" (performed by Joey Ramone) and "What I Like About You" (performed by Lillix). But it's Anna's band that steals the show, affecting completely the exuberance of a teen pop rock band chipping away with steady eighth notes like their lives depended on it. Rated PG 97 mins. MTW

STEP INTO LIQUID - (NR) - Documentary - This documentary profiles surfers and surfing locations all over the world, including the monstrous waves of Oahu's North Shore, the Gulf shores of Texas (where waves are created by oil supertankers), the ice-cold waters of Ireland, Santa Cruz, Costa Rica, the Cortez Banks, Da Nang in Vietnam, the tiny

waves of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin and the tropics of Rapa Nui. More important than the diverse and often spectacular locations and waves, however, are the wide range of surfers that are profiled, challenging the stereotypes about the surfing counterculture. See Feature Story.

JOHNNY ENGLISH - (PG) - Comedy/Action - When her majesty's crown jewels are stolen by a conniving Frenchman (John Malkovich), who also plans to steal the queen's throne, Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson), a bit unseasoned but intensely enthusiastic, is thrown onto the case. Fast cars, high tech gadgets, top secret info Johnny can hardly believe it. "OVERCOME" AOV is Maui's premier Melodic Hardcore Punk band. Absence of Void is also very Christian, and their spirituality comes through over all else in their lyrics. That's no easy feat, considering that musically they traverse a broad spectrum of Metal momentum and hardcore punk energy. But one of the disc's few flaws is in production--Noah's vocals are drowning, Joe's drums don't carry a lot of weight and Kyle's guitar work isn't the impending force that it could be. This is clearly a strong debut release for a local band and you ought to definitely give this album a shot. CHOKING VICTIM “NO GODS/ NO MANAGERS” Try this. A crust punk band with ska trimmings, with an affinity for crack and Satan. Like Rancid without the well-done sloppiness. Super fast (no doubt crack-fueled) drums and a raw-toned guitar provide strong punk but clean ska. Largely anthem-punk all the way around. My only grief with the record is how the album is called “No Gods/No Managers” but lyrically the singer says “Don’t you know that Satan is the man!” Hmmm.

As with the rest of the bands here this one broke up to start up a new band. Their name: Leftover Crack. Satan. Crack. Punk Rock. Yeah, this doesn’t help the acceptance of the genre for your parents but goddamn is this fun stuff. [GANNON GILMORE] –Hellcat Records

GOLDFRAPP “BLACK CHERRY” Upon first listen, I’ll admit I was a bit disheartened by the blatant, dancey electro-pop of Goldfrapp’s latest CD, a follow up to the more ethereal, downtempo ambience of “Felt Mountain”. It also pissed me off that they decided to come out with a revamped “Felt Mountain”, like, way past the due date – who wants to buy the same album twice, no matter how excellent the original is, for crying out loud? However, after a few listens of “Black Cherry”, I can still appreciate Allison Goldfrapp’s darkly sexual lyrical content and vocal style, and as long as I disassociate this CD from their last, it’s actually an excellent and beautifully bizarre, electronic ‘80s, post-disco, sinister pop, trip hop album. Every year I look forward to Six Degrees Records' Traveler compilation, as it always contains the best genre bending music from around the world. Rezos, by Cuban singer Bobi Céspedes, is remixed into a constantly changing dub. Ojos de Brujo from Barcelona grabs the attention with beatboxing, tablas, flamenco guitar, a deep rhythm and a chorus that is fun to repeat over and over again. MIDival PunditZ, from Bombay, comes through with uniquely utilized tablas, strangely manipulated vocal samples, a driving dance beat, and dramatic crescendo on Dark Escape. RADIO ZUMBIDO “LOS ÚLTIMOS DÍAS DEL AM” Consider this a Latino-Techno-Space Aged-Spaghetti Western joint that initiates mental journeys to Latin America's shady, funky underground.

Radio Zumbido is a trio comprised of Guatemalan Juan Carlos Barrios, a bassist and a drummer. Barrios traveled around his country making field recordings of rural AM radio broadcasts, city sounds and interesting esoteric bits and then mixed them up in a very imaginative way. It's a mellow, chill out CD with some danceable tracks like “Radio Sololá”, “LaRueda” and “El Aleph”.
