I rushed from work and picked up my son (four years old) and my nephew (five years old) to take them to meet up with my family to hold signs on Friday [‘Support Hawaiian Rights,’ Nov. 20). My nephew asked my son if he knew why all the kanaka were doing what they were doing. My son, being four and hungry, didn’t really reply. Then my nephew explained to him how all the Makua and keiki that participated in this did it for “you and me and all the keiki.” My son said “why they did it for us?” My nephew answered because “the government people don’t want to give Hawaiians money for their Kula (school).”

My son replied “how we going learn then?”

My nephew answered, “I don’t know.”

I just wanted to stress the fact that my nephew is a little worried about his education, not college education—his education NOW. On the way home they were talking and they were proud all the kanaka came together to help the keiki. These keiki will hold their heads up a little higher knowing that all these kanaka got their back. It is amazing that our keiki at six have to worry about how second grade is going to be funded next year.

This was my nephew’s reason for wanting to participate in “E Kue Kakao.” It is also amazing how immersion is called immersion and why.

Hawaiian Language is the native tongue of this land. It was stolen away from us and we still suffer because English gets funded first. Had they kept the language and always had Hawaiian language-based schools, we wouldn’t be having this problem. But, of course, not letting us keep our language would have ruined everything for those illegal bastards.

Agree with me or not, it doesn’t matter.

It didn’t matter what your reason was—the point is that on Nov. 14 everyone stood together.

Anthony Pignataro Responds: Actually, the point of my story was that though lining up a thousand locals along Ka’ahumanu Ave. on a Friday night is impressive, it ultimately doesn’t mean anything if organizers can’t use the event to force a tangible political victory.

SNOUT PARTS ARE GOOD? I just wanted to thank you for the section “Coconut Wireless—The Week in Review.” You see, I don’t watch the news, let alone read the newspaper. Seems to me most of what I hear and read is bad and besides, how much do I really need to know?

Actually, “Coconut Wireless” inspires me to almost care. I mean, here’s someone who has obviously sorted through various variations of propaganda to bring the “truth to the table.”

There are things going on in places with people at times and I should know about it, shouldn’t I? Like a good butcher, you’re able to tell the difference between snout parts and ass parts and with the skill of a Teppenyaki chef who knows just how to make either bit yummier.

Thanks for the weekly briefings—colorful, tasty and in bite sized chunks just small enough to digest on an otherwise empty stomach.

It was a beautiful night for a wedding for two wonderful people. It was a very special time for two great friends of mine. Hawaii Fancy Covering Hawaii by way of Irvine There’s no missing the point of the cover story in the November/December issue of the glossy Hawaii Magazine. The words “Nature’s Fury” appear in bright yellow and orange type over a dark yet gorgeous sunset shot of lava pouring into the water on the coast of the Big Island.

The story, written and photographed by Donna O’Meara, tells the story of the 20year eruption of Kileaua—“the longestlived continuous eruption in the 200-year written history of Kilauea.”

Other stories in the issue include a rundown on the best surf spots throughout the Hawaiian chain, a travelogue feature on Molokai and numerous smaller pieces, including one on the brig Carthaginian II— which the article says is slated to be sunk early next year.

The stories and photos in Hawaii Magazine are colorful booster pieces, written by people who clearly know and have been to Hawaii. But in the spirit of most Hollywood productions, Hawaii Magazine isn’t published anywhere near Hawaii. In fact, its editors sit thousands of miles from the islands, nestled in a busy Irvine, California business park next to a large, gray self-storage facility.

According to the editor, June Kikuchi, Hawaii Magazine was based in California from the very beginning. “[It] was launched in 1984 as Hawaii—Paradise of the Pacific by Richard Gibson out of Sun City, California,” she said via email.

Four years later, Fancy Publications, (now BowTie Inc.)— which owns more than 50 other publications—bought the magazine and moved it to its current Orange County location. Best known for its animalthemed magazines, including Cat Fancy, Reptiles and Aquarium Fish Magazine, the editorial staffs of BowTie Inc. work side-by-side in the sprawling offices, where the managing editor of Hawaii Magazine (Roger Sipe) sits directly across from the editor of Horse Fancy.

But this isn’t to say Hawaii Mag has always been cooped among the clay tile roofs and salmon-painted stucco walls of South Orange County. In fact, nearly 10 years ago, Hawaii Magazine picked itself up and packed its file folders, paperclip trays, copywriters and editorial assistants and actually moved to the islands.

“In 1994, the editorial offices moved to Honolulu to join the ad sales staff, where it remained until the end of 1997,” said Kikuchi. “Escalating costs of business in

Hawaii forced Fancy Publications to move the editorial operations of the magazine back to its Irvine facility.”

The advertising sales manager Lorrain Burgess and her assistant, Annamaria Miru still do their business from Honolulu, while the main editorial team does theirs in Irvine, traveling to Hawaii a few times each year for meetings and major events. The majority of the magazine’s 20 writers and 15 photographers live in Hawaii as well.

“We accept queries from writers and photographers,” Kikuchi said. “But we require that

our writers be long-time Hawaii residents or those with very strong ties to the islands.”

Consulting editor, Cheryl Chee Tsunami, bridges the gap. The Honolulu resident is “well connected with writers and photographers in Hawaii, as well as public relations and advertising personnel,” Kikuchi said. “She’s an integral part of our staff.”

The magazine is available in Hawaii, but is obviously more popular on the mainland, where for only $20 a year, Hawaii enthusiasts can have a little piece of the islands delivered to their front door.

Kikuchi says, “our 85,000 readers are mostly mainlanders who LOVE Hawaii. In our last reader survey, 60% of respondents said they visit the islands every other year or more! We know that these folks return to Hawaii time and time again because they have fallen in love with Hawaii’s people and culture. And that’s what we give them in Hawaii Magazine.” MTW

LOCALNEWS MONDAY, NOV. 24 Lots of stuff today… but it’s all boring except the following press release: “Local girl dreams up a cool flavor to represent Hawaii in Dreyer’s ‘A Scoop of the U.S.A.’ ice cream competition”—Thirteen year-old Pukalani resident Emilie Howlett wants to introduce her Hula Girl Swirl ice cream flavor to the world. According to a Dreyer’s press release, Howlett describes the flavor as “creamy vanilla ice cream flowing with chunky Hawaiian macadamia nuts and hipshaking chocolate and caramel swirls.” If she wins, Howlett gets a year’s supply of non-hip-shaking Dreyer’s and an U.S. Savings Bond of undetermined value. Other sickly sweet state-themed flavors include Eskimocha, Hogs & Kisses from Iowa and the sure-fire winner Caramel Me Back to Old Virginia. The winning ice cream flavor will also go into “limited production,” which the industry defines as “not enough to fill Marlon Brando’s dessert-hole, but plenty for that guy who plays Drew Carey on TV.”

TUESDAY, NOV. 25 One of the biggest problems facing the U.S. today is the fact that too many people care about things. And by “things,” I mean really bad stuff like the cancer and the AIDS and, in the words of one City of Hope press release, “other serious diseases that affect people.” Okay, maybe I’m

being too harsh. I guess “caring” is, in itself, harmless. But for some—I’m talking about the Stevie Nicks and Keanu Reeves of the world—caring isn’t enough. They have to “do” something. And since they lack the judgment and discretion of the rest of us, the things they end up “doing” are actually quite feeble and silly. For instance, right now the City of Hope is trying to raise money by selling 500 limitededition four-color lithographs “inspired by Stevie Nicks’ 1979 song ‘Sisters of the Moon” ($60 apiece) and “artwork in the forms of apparel and cards” bearing the “special designs, Peace and Zen” of Keanu Reeves (no price given but whatever it is it’s too high).

Now, in a world where Keanu Reeves-inspired stuff is our savior, wouldn’t the survivors envy the dead?

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 26 For a bunch of laid-back surfer island peace lovers, you people sure are bloodthirsty. I mean, okay—you want to get rid of the feral pigs. And the wild dogs. Don’t forget that “Olinda Big Cat!” Don’t let its probable mythical status get you down! And the feral chickens—for God’s sakes don’t let those get away. So I guess it follows that local bumpkins are banding together to form death squads to go out and slaughter a bunch of tiny, tiny coqui frogs who happen to be really, really loud. And though it pains me to say this, it’s incumbent on us all to root for the higher life form. Go Frogs!

THURSDAY, NOV. 27 Ahh, Thanksgiving. Only truly honest holiday left, you know. Only one that hasn’t been ruined by crass commercialism. That, and you get to gorge yourself on turkey and stuffing and buttery rolls and that cranberry sauce that comes right out of the can in one delicious gelatinous cylinder… Mmmm… cranberry sauce that comes right out of the can in one delicious gelatinous cylinder… It may be Thanksgiving, but U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D, Hawaii) is bringing home the pork. That would be $15 million worth of federal funds for an inter-island ferry that would

finally free people on Maui who want to go to Oahu from having to rely on those cramped little turboprop puddle-jumpers.

FRIDAY, NOV. 28 Today I learned that I can learn all sorts of interesting things from reading the Maui Weekly. Like the finer points of employment-based immigration law. For instance, the Nov. 27 issue contains a letter from a woman asking about the constant presence of “European supermodel” Leila Sas in the paper. “I’m sure she is a nice girl,” writes Eve Grogan, “but I hate having those boobs in my mailbox all the time.” Grogan further noted that Sas didn’t seem to be much of “European supermodel,” as her image didn’t appear anywhere except the Maui Weekly and the Blublocker.com website, where she’s known as “Miss Blublocker” (Maui Weekly editor Joe Sugarman owns Blublocker Sunglasses). Anyhoo, Sugarman responds that Sas, whom he said was Miss Hungary in 1998, was granted “special supermodel status”

by U.S. Immigration when she moved to the U.S. “Special supermodel status?!” Hurrying to my copy of the latest Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services Form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Work, I found to my amazement that Sugarman was right! Well, kinda. There is, of course, no “supermodel status” in any immigration law, special or otherwise. But Sas could have obtained an immigrant visa by requesting status as “an alien of extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics” under a Standard Occupational Classification of either 27-2011 (Actors) or 27-2099 (Entertainers and Performers, Sports and Related Workers, All Other).

Indeed, one of the possible criteria for entry is “evidence of commercial successes in the performing arts, as shown by box office receipts or record, cassette, compact disk, or video sales.”

The man convicted of blowing up the Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988, killing 270 people, lives in relative luxury in a private four-room suite in Glasgow’s Barlinnie prison, according to a November report in Britain’s News of the World. Abdelbaset al Megrahi, serving a minimum 27-year sentence, has a color TV, VCR, stereo, personal computer, kitchen, floral curtains, framed art and unlimited telephone access. A prison official said the man must be isolated because of the nature of his crime, but that Barlinnie had a limited choice of such facilities.

A bank robber in Modesto, Calif. who had forgotten to cut eye-holes in his mask (and who kept lifting it to peek out) nonetheless escaped with his loot but not before banging into a steel door frame on his way out.

CRYBABIES Joseph Tomaino of Neptune, N.J., won $3 million from a jury because a side effect of penile surgery was an erection that lasted for three days, which an appeals court later found did not interfere with most of his daily activities. (The trial judge, who wanted to give Tomaino even more money, had the case taken away from him by the appeals court in November.) And passenger Ivette Jones, who said she was traumatized in the October Staten Island ferry collision and couldn’t sleep because she was so distraught, filed a $200 million lawsuit against New York City, $80 million more than claimed by a woman who lost both legs in the accident.

HISTORIC ROCKS ARE STILL HISTORIC In October, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on the heated clash in the Twin Cities suburb of Eden Prairie over how much money to spend on a new historic preservation program, which the Star Tribune noted was ironic because the town was nothing more than farms until the 1950s. Britain’s Industrial Christian Fellowship of religious scholars complained in September that people’s prayers go disproportionately for teachers and nurses and said it would distribute a set of prayers for the underblessed financial sector under the heading “When did you last pray for your stockbroker?” And in November, the Saudi government set new restrictions on the export of sand, fearing that increased needs of its neighbors (in the reconstruction of Iraq and in Bahrain’s reclamation projects into the Persian Gulf) will create a shortage.

In 2000, “News of the Weird” reported that a major plank in the platform of a Montana man running for the U.S. Senate was to encourage the space program to build and use an “elevator” to lift satellites into orbit, rather than the far more expensive rocket ships. An October 2003 Associated Press report disclosed that a dozen or more scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory so deeply believe in the elevator that they work on their own time on studying and promoting its feasibility. The elevator would be a cable shaft about 50,000 miles long, lowered to Earth from a conventional spacecraft and docked to a land station. The shaft would be made of “carbon nanotubes” (many times stronger yet lighter than steel), but the main problem is that, so far, science only knows how to make nanotubes a few feet long.

Howard Dean For President In 2004, anyone but Bush I don’t regret voting for Ralph Nader in 2000. Given the information we had at the time, Al Gore looked like a lukewarm version of Bill Clinton: another southern New Democrat into free trade and welfare reform, albeit with a genuine passion for long-ignored environmental issues. I figured George W. Bush for a meaner, stupider version of his dad, another linguistically challenged, harmless centrist with little agenda aside from paying off his contributors with, say, a cut in the capital gains tax.

Boy, was I wrong. To paraphrase National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, who could have imagined back then that a dozen maniacs would hijack our democracy, bankrupt the treasury and subvert our basic values?

Heretofore I have opposed strategic voting tactics. When citizens vote for candidates because they seem likely to win, it creates a winner-takes-all aggregation of support. That subverts democracy’s underlying assumption: that people vote for the man or woman they’d most like to see win. At its worst, pick-the-winner voting elevates any candidate lucky enough to enjoy an early jump in the polls to premature, and possibly undeserved victory. Let the electorate vote for politicians whose ideas they like best and let the chads hang where they may.

This year is different.

Even if his only crime had been the despicable way he seized power, using a rogue Supreme Court to have himself appointed to office, Bush would be the most poisonous leader in U.S. history. He treasonously undermined the constitutional separa-

tion of powers, savaged the right of the states to conduct elections and brutalized faith in the principle that, rich or poor, black or white, every vote counts.

Only after 9/11, however, did Bush begin acting like a dictator: jailing innocent people solely because they were Muslim, authorizing the FBI and CIA to spy on political opponents, converting Guantánamo Bay into a concentration camp for 12-year-old prisoners seized in Afghanistan.

Thanks to tax cuts diabolically devised to minimize the possibility of economic stimulus, a tenyear $4 trillion surplus has become a $6 trillion deficit. Now he has us stuck in a unilateral, losing war in Iraq, a vicious quagmire that has given us neither preemption from WMDs nor cheap oil—just $500 billion wasted along with 350 dead soldiers and more than a thousand who will never walk again. Bush is nothing like his dad, except in his casual disregard for the problems of the unemployed.

America is under attack, and Bush is enemy number one. When you’re at war for your future, you can no longer enjoy the luxury of picking the ideal candidate or the perfect party. Under normal circumstances, third parties like the Greens and Libertarians deserve the support of like-minded voters. But, the fact is, only the Democratic Party can defeat Bush next year. Democratic contenders like Dennis Kucinich, Carol Moseley Braun and Al Sharpton have brought common sense, progressive perspectives on the war in Iraq and what we should expect from government into the conversation, but they suffer from, respectively, lack of money and lack of melanin. They won’t win the Democratic nomination.

I’m a charter member of the 2004 ABB (Anybody But Bush) society. Whether the nom-

inee turns out to be a right-winger (Clark, Lieberman) or a colorless bore (Edwards, Kerry, Gephardt), I’ll vote for him over Bush, in the same spirit with which the late Afghan warlord Ahmed Shah Massoud reportedly toasted a meeting of anti-Soviet factions during the ‘80s occupation: “First we kill the Russians. Then we kill each other.” But I have a preference: Howard Dean has the best chance to beat Bush.

Brilliant, aggressive and moneyed (that’s Dean Witter to you, pal), Dr. Dean has a corner on the single most important issue to Americans: health care. His politics are surprisingly centrist, in both the refreshing sense

(he’s pro-Second Amendment and he came out for class, rather than race-based affirmative action) and in the disappointing, Clintonian sense (he opposed invading Iraq, but not Afghanistan).

But the rubber would really tear up the road at the presidential debates, where Dean’s dry, sardonic Long Island wit would devastate the hapless Bush—and charm television viewers.

His natural pugnacity could help Dems deal more aggressively than usual with the nasty attack ads they can expect in the campaign ahead. Frankly, the other Democratic contenders don’t have what it takes to stand up to Karl Rove’s brutal war machine. MTW

Surfer Girls

Dustin Tester wants to teach your daughter to surf You can be pretty sure that every 15-year-old girl in Idaho saw Blue Crush last year. Teenage girls everywhere who never saw the ocean before are putting on board shorts and dreaming of paddling out to the waves. An increasing number of them are finding Dustin Tester and her Maui Surfer Girls camp.

When Tester grew up in Lahaina 20 or so years ago, she used to go to camp in the rustic A-Frame houses at Olowalu. Back then, she had no idea her grandfather— Keith Tester, who at one time managed the Pioneer Mill— had helped build those houses at Camp Pecusa. But even more outlandish was the thought that someday she might actually own a surf camp for teenage girls there.

“Never did I imagine myself running a business,” said Tester, who owns Maui Surfer Girls. “Now I’m learning how to market, communicate and budget. It’s getting easier every year.”

Tester certainly looks like someone whose dad taught her to ride waves at Puanoa when she was eight years old. She has tanned skin and light brown hair made even lighter by sun exposure. When I interviewed her she wore jeans, slippers, a shell necklace, one of those big surfer watches and a gray shirt that said, “Surf for World Peace.”

“We want to empower girls,” said Tester. “It’s more than just a surf camp. We talk about what girls are facing.

They will experience a lot of adventures. There’s power of taking kids out of their regular environment and putting them somewhere unique. It builds up their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.”

Since 2000, Tester’s camp has taught surfing to girls aged 12 to 17, most of whom are from the Midwest or east coast and on Maui with their vacationing family. Camp lasts 12 days and runs in two sessions from early July to early August. This past year, Tester said each session had 25 to 30 girls.

When camp reopens next year, it’ll cost a family $2,300 to send the girl to Maui Surfer Girls. Though it seems like a lot, that price covers all food, lodging, instruction and equipment for each girl for 12 days, as well as a three-to-one girlto-instructor ratio.

“It’s so cool to watch their eyes light up,” said Tester.

“I’m sharing the beauty of the island with them. My mom’s from Arkansas, so I know what’s going through these girls’ minds when they come here. Two sisters came to the camp a couple years ago from New Jersey.

‘Oh my God,’ one of them said, ‘the ocean’s blue here.’

They were just floored.”

Upon arrival, Tester and her instructors get the girls into an “opening circle” and do introductions. Immediately after the girls are in the water for a swim test to check the girls’ comfort and experience in the water. After all, many of the girls come from Kentucky or Idaho, where the ocean is virtually a myth.

Later in the evening is a barbecue and instructor skits.

“It’s just silly stuff to introduce the camp rules in a comical way,” said Tester. “I’m Auntie Aloha. I tell them things like there’s no bullying—girls tend to bully each other.”

The next day surfing lessons begin. They start by trying to give the girls a very thorough lesson in ocean awareness. They teach them about rip tides and being careful around the reef.

On average, the girls get two surfing sessions each day.

They surf Thousand Peaks or Launiupoko, depending on their skill level.

“They go very rapidly from barely sitting on a board to turning down waves,” said Tester. “The goal is to produce

excellent surfers. You learn surfing by doing. But now I’m learning more about surfing by watching them. Now I’m learning how to articulate it, how to ease tension.”

To give the kids an all-around experience on Maui, Tester takes them hiking in the Iao Valley and to see ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, snorkeling at Honolua Bay and to the Maui Ocean Center. Tester is single with no children, but she admits that running the school makes her feel “like I’m becoming a mother now.

“A lot of it is just being by their side,” she said.

“Surprisingly, the girls aren’t catty.”

Tester said that when she was the age of the kids she teaches now, running a surf camp wasn’t exactly her goal in life.

“I wanted to be a professional surfer,” she said. “When I was 21 I was actually a sponsored skimboarder. I got free boards and that was about it. But it was cool being the only girl competing against these guys.”

Tester may have grown up on Maui, but she graduated from Prescott College, a small, private outdoor education school in Arizona. She majored in wilderness therapy.

“It combines adventure education with psychology,” she said. “I learned rock climbing, mountain biking, white water rafting.”

It was while working at a North Carolina climbing camp that Tester began taking steps to open Maui Surfer Girls.

It was also there that she broke her leg.

“I tell the girls that the scar is my shark bite,” she said.

“But I broke it one week after reserving Camp Pecusa. I thought the whole thing was in jeopardy. But while recuperating I was able to do all the leg work—I guess you’d call it the broken leg work.”

That was nearly four years ago. By May of next year Tester hopes to expand her little surf camp for teens into retreat called Swellwomen.

“This is my dream business,” said Tester. “It’s so rewarding, knowing you’re making a difference in these girls’ lives.”

Because huge surf postponed last year’s meet, officials secured D.T. Fleming and Lahaina Harbor as back-up sites.

The 5th annual Billabong Pro Maui starts its holding period on Dec. 8. Like the last three years, this season-ending contest will determine the women’s world champion.

For the first time Australian Layne Beachley will not be the ratings leader coming to Honolua. Kauai’s Keala Kennelly has that distinction. Neither surfer has ever fared well at Honolua. That means Australian Chelsea Georgeson or South African Heather Clark could sneak past both leaders and claim the Honolua title, as well as the world championship.

Maui locals who have never seen the top ASP girls in action will be in for a surprise. They will see Honolua ridden like no other member of the opposite sex has ever ridden Honolua.

Ian Walsh, 20, who made the quarterfinals of the $125,000 Rip Curl Pro in Hossegor, France this past August, is giving back to the Maui kids. The 2000 King Kekaulike valedictorian and his clothing sponsor, Billabong, are putting on a free menehune contest on Dec. 20.

Surf contests, love ‘um or hate ‘um, they are as important to the Maui surfing scene as rice is to a plate lunch. They help raise the level of surfing. Case in point; Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) world tour point leaders Kelly Slater and Andy Irons are regarded as the best surfers on the planet.

The Maui contests have been great training ground for Maui’s long legacy of national champions. National titleists include Granger Larsen, Kai Barger, Clay Marzo, Paige Alms, Helena Suehiro, Noah Shimabukuro, Kahikili Kaaa, Matt Kinoshita, Greg Unabia and Lisa Wallace.

In addition, four Maui surfers have graced the covers of national publications in recent years, and all were part of the Maui contest scene. Surfers like Noah Shimabukuro, Cheyne Magnusson, Kelly Potts and Kai Henry all landed covers of prestigious magazines. The upcoming contest schedule is as varied as a menu selection at a Chinese restaurant.

There are contests for keikis, women, ratings points, fun and dollars. It’s all part of the 2003-2004 Maui contest season.

The new season starts off with the Dec. 6 Hi-Tech/Ezekiel/Lopez Surfbash XIV at Ho’okipa Beach Park. It’s the first Hawaii amateur Surf Association (HASA) Maui points-meet for the 2004 season. It will also be the last qualifying opportunity for the Billabong Pro Maui trials heat.

That Hot Dog Guy Hungry surfers like Mike Mackey

He only goes to out to Honoloa Bay when the waves are good. They haven’t been for the last week or two—winds coming in from the wrong direction, too massive or too rainy—but the bay’s going off today. He’ll be out all day.

“Eh brah, want a hot dog?” he yells at some surfers passing his maroon Volkswagen Westphalia van, parked on the cliff overlooking the bay. “Here, have a veggie burger! I know you’re a hippy—that’s why I put the hippy burger there!”

Mike Mackey, 44, got to Honolua Bay about 10:30 a.m. this beautiful Sunday morning, spread out his van’s awning, placed a few signs on it saying “Free Grinds,” “Free food water” and one elaborately painted one showing a surfer eating a hot dog while a bikini blonde looks up at him thinking “Mmm… what a great looking weiner” and started cooking. Today’s fare is pretty typical: about 80 hot dogs, 40 burgers, 40 veggie burgers. Some days he even has chili.

“I’ve got too many wieners and buns,” he said, laughing. “I gotta get rid of them.”

As a big black dog runs around, its face wet and sandy and Steely Dan songs emanate from the van, a dripping surfer hobbles up the cliff over the mostly-dried out dirt and rock path in front of Mackey’s propane grill.

“Hey, you want a drink?” Mackey suddenly asks.

The guy pauses. “Sure!”

The drink, the hot dogs, the hippy burgers—they’re all free, compliments of Mackey, who runs Clearview Window Cleaning, the outfit that cleans all the resort windows in Kapalua and Ka’anapali.

“I do this to promote sharing,” he said. “It’s such a mean world. I want to teach these kids to give back.

Sometimes the waves are so good and you can just ruin it by not sharing. The first couple of swells, everybody gets agro. So I’ll cook hot dogs to calm everyone down. I did it at Ho’okipa for a while. But I really like the bay. It’s just to keep the bay fun.”

Mackey goes all out. He’s got coolers full of cold drinks, avocado and pickle spears. There are oranges on the table near the napkins and hot dog buns.

“I could smell the hot dog stand from down the road,” says one local surfer guy. He and Mackey talk a bit, then Mackey offers him a bottle of Perrier from one cooler. “‘Gucci water,’” he said, frowning. “I haven’t had ‘Gucci water’ since I moved from the mainland.”

Mackey laughs and continues his cooking. Off to one side, big wave surfer and chief Maui County lifeguard Archie Kalepa—who’s already eaten his burger—is telling a few guys about how he pulled the body of a dead fish-

erman from a cave down the cliff a week earlier.

“He wasn’t so bad,” said Kalepa. “[His shoulder] was a little bad. But his face was all messed up.”

Mackey listens a bit, then hands one still-wet surfer— who’s so hungry he’s already downed a hot dog and a veggie burger—a cheeseburger.

“Now everyone’s all digging it,” said Mackey. “I’ve actually had clothing companies ask to sponsor me. At first I thought it would be cool to hang a banner, but nahh.

I don’t really want to promote anyone.”

Of course, he adds, “the chicks all hang out at my van!”

Mackey, divorced, shares custody of his 19-year-old son with his wife, who he says is still his “good friend.” Born and raised in Ashland, Oregon—home of the big Shakespeare Festival—he’s lived all over the western hemisphere.

After graduating high school, Mackey moved to Aspen, Colorado, where he lived for six years. When some buddies decided to move to Alaska, Mackey followed—on his motorcycle. There he met his future wife, had a son and settled down for another six years. For much of that time, he worked as a garbage man.

“I moved to Hawaii in 1989,” he said. “I couldn’t leave.”

Since then, Mackey’s surfed a lot, made a few surf movies and cooked a lot of free cheeseburgers. He sees it as his way of taking a little of the rage out of surfing.

“Sometimes, it’s really nice to watch someone else catch a wave,” said Mackey. “Sometimes it’s better to give up a wave to someone else rather than take it for yourself.

It’s about giving—not what I can take from it.” MTW

The Never-Ending Battle

By Anthony Pignataro The Costco Wholesale Corporation, based in the Issaquah, Washington, is a large company. It employs 103,000 workers around the world—considerably more than Issaquah’s population of 13,790— and claims 19.5 million members. In the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, it brought in $41.69 billion in revenues. It operates 429 big box retail outlets worldwide, including 320 pharmacies, 383 one-hour photo stands and 387 hot dog carts.

And in its store on Maui, it sells surfboards and board shorts and other surfrelated gear. The boards are just massproduced molded “pop-out” things stamped with a distinctive swirl design, but the apparel tends to be top of the pyramid name brand all the way. And, of course, it’s all sold remarkably cheaper than the same products available at your local surf shops. The pop-out boards typically go for $200 less than a more traditionally shaped board.

With surfing gradually leaving its “extreme” past behind, it makes sense that outlets like Costco—that great commercial ziggurat of the modern mainstream world—would move huge numbers of boards and shorts. Needless to say, these trends are spelling doom for Maui’s independent surf shops—those small authentically local boutiques that have no shot at competing against the Costco leviathan.

“There’s lots of history here,” said one surf shop owner who requested anonymity. “It’s a never-ending battle. It’s not a good thing for anyone in the surf industry.”

Put simply this is the classic fight of modern American capitalism: giant wholesalers can deliver products cheaper and simpler than smaller retailers.

Indeed, Costco practically boasts about it.

“Costco is able to offer lower prices and better values by eliminating virtually all the frills and costs historically associated with conventional wholesalers and retailers, including salespeople, fancy buildings, delivery, billing and accounts receivable,” said Costco president and CEO Jim Sinegal in the official company profile.

“We run a tight operation with extremely low overhead which enables us to pass on dramatic savings to our members.”

But it isn’t just your local shaper who’s threatened. Big names like Rip Curl face huge problems when their products end up on Costco shelves. Again quoting the Costco company profile, “Costco is known for carrying top quality national and regional brands, with 100 percent satisfaction guaranteed, at prices consistently below traditional wholesale or retail outlets.”

It’s those “consistently” low prices that

have local surf brands worried.

“The concern of such retailers as myself is there’s a price integrity issue once a product appears at Costco,” said Honolua Surf Co.’s Randy Bloomer. “And that affects the consumer mindset.”

Nearly every surf brand name appears on Costco shelves. The damage done to the retailer is the same as the local board-shaping craftsman—with the products sold cheaper at the outlet than at the actual retail store—is that consumers don’t go to the actual retail store.

“Some retailers have no idea how their products got [on Costco shelves],” said the owner. “I’ve seen all the brands in there at one time or another. Many local brands will send their reps to buy the stuff back. Some can’t afford to get it all.”

Costco’s often-brilliant buying strategy has been well documented. “Retail pundits who keep score said Costco frequently outmaneuvers Sam’s [Club] in getting upscale brands,” wrote Katherine Bowers in a Mar. 11, 2003 Woman’s Wear Daily article. “‘Sam’s gets good brands, Costco gets great brands,’ said [retail consultant firm] McMillan Doolittle’s [Neil] Stern.”

This, wrote Bowers, causes consternation among the retailers.

“There are a number of companies like Oakley keeping very tight control because they don’t want their goods in a Costco or Sam’s,” Mark Brutzkus, an attorney with the Los Angeles apparel law firm Ezra Brutzkus Gubner told Bowers.

Big box outlets “just saturates the market,” said one surf retailer. “When the trend is not hot anymore, then they move on.” MTW

‘A Pretty Lazy Guy’ Luke Walsh’s competitive days are just beginning Luke Walsh remembers the day pretty well, but insists he was never scared. Matt Kinoshita, who was there, too, remembers being very scared.

“Luke was probably 10 years old,” said the local board shaper and mentor to Walsh, one of Maui’s most promising up and coming professional surfers. “We were out at Ho’okipa and it was humongous. I’m out in the water, and little Luke paddled out and sat by me. ‘What are you doing here?!’ I told him. I was scared for him because it was huge out there. I had him grab my leg and he managed to ride a small wave in. I went back and told the guys how impressed I was that he paddled out. Sure enough, here comes Luke again. He didn’t realize he was in a lot of danger.”

Walsh has spent more than half of his life in the Pacific Ocean. A transplant from Rhode Island and taught to surf at a young age by his father, the dedicated 18-year-old describes himself as “a pretty lazy guy.” He spends most of his time in the saltwater, often surfing for up to 6 hours a day at Ho’okipa Beach near his family’s home in Kuau.

Next month, the NSSA and HASA amateur surfing season begins with the 12th annual HiTech-Lopez Surf Bash at Ho’okipa. Walsh currently holds the first place ranking in the HASA series, and has graduated to the next division, leaving many pairs of interested eyes on the young surfer as people wonder where he will go next. So far he’s competed in dozens of events in Hawaii, against some of the top amateur surfers in the state. In fact, last year he entered a competition in Japan.

“It probably wasn’t one of my best trips,” said Walsh.

“The waves were flat, knee-high the whole time. Mainly I’m just surfing in competitions in Hawaii. Sometimes California. But this coming summer I’d like to compete all over the world— Europe, Australia, whatnot.”

Surfing is all he’s focused on right now. When first asked what else interests him besides catching a wave, Walsh paused a long time, then said he had no answer. Then during a later interview he said he suddenly remembered that he used to like to play basketball a lot, but hadn’t played in a while—it detracted from his surfing.

And he has traveled around the world, to popular cruise ship destinations like Western

Samoa, Australia and Fiji. Having recently completed a couple of classes at Maui Community College, Walsh says he wants to take off next year and just surf the world.

Still, all this experience has failed to make Walsh cocky.

For instance, he doesn’t particularly care for his style, which he calls “lanky.”

He still gets nervous during contests, preferring to have friends around at all times so that if he loses “at least someone there knows you surf good.”

And he is the first to admit that he still has a lot to learn.

“You’re never done learning,” said Walsh. “Not ever. There’s always something to learn the next day.”

Walsh has three brothers. Two are 12-year old twins and one is his 20-year old brother Ian, who also surfs professionally.

Besides his father, a longtime surfer who taught him to ride waves when he was seven or eight, Walsh received the majority of his coaching from Kinoshita. The 30-something veteran surfer and fireman has been Mr. Miyagi to Walsh’s Karate Kid for at least the last decade.

The two met when Walsh’s parents asked Kinoshita to shape a board for their son. As Walsh surfed more and more, he saw Kinoshita often in the water.

“He’s always taught me the ropes,” Walsh said. “He’s really down-to-earth. Just a super guy. Everybody gets along with him.”

Kinoshita said he was a pro surfer for a short time before deciding it wasn’t for him. “In my case I’m still involved and I’m happy with the way things are going.

Luke will be at that crossroads too, soon.

It’s not easy being a pro surfer. It’s easier that he has his brother, who’s been there. But he can go as far as he wants.

Or he may decide he doesn’t want to travel the world the rest of his life.”

At this point, Walsh hasn’t decided what his future will look like. For now, all he can see are incoming sets.

“It’s out in the open for me,” he said.

Right now, his goals are to devote all of his time to surfing and to “tag along with my older brother.”

Whatever happens in his nascent career, Walsh is happy just spending windless evenings alone at the beach with the waves.

“There’s the feeling of getting away from everything,” he says. “Once you stand up on a wave, you don’t think about anything else in the world. Not to mention that you have a blast.” MTW

I’ve had it all. I’ve broken a finger on the reef, lots of cuts. But the worst time was at Ma’alaea. I was lucky I didn’t break my face. I could literally feel a piece of coral breaking off in my forehead. But I didn’t need stitches. It was just hamburger, that’s all. I scratched everything: under my ribs, my arm, shoulder, leg, head. It was all down one side of me. I think I bruised some ribs, too. It wore me down. The next day I had a full fever, stayed in bed.

-Mark Anderson, “Mayor of Honolua Bay” I’ve got scars all over my feet. Every time I go out I get something. The worst was at Diamondhead. Two to three feet. It was great, somewhat windy. I was surfing by the cliffs. I was just kicking out and I didn’t see where I was landing. My foot went into a hole. The coral was razor sharp and it went deep inside. When it’s razor sharp like that you don’t know you’re cut until you walk across the sand and say “wow, that really hurts!” and you look down and see the cut across the bottom of your foot caked with blood and sand and dirt.

-Katy Leahy, Napili I was out at Laniuopoko the other Friday. I had only been surfing for a couple of months. I was trying to catch a wave and I wiped out and hit the bottom. It was a 12foot wave—the biggest wave I ever tried to catch. I hit my back. It’s not that bad, but there’s about a 10-inch scrape on my back just above my hip. It was no trouble—I just needed some medicines.

-Kono, Kihei It was at Windmills, the first time I was in Hawaii. And it sucked. It was summer, low tide—I was using a big board and was a little uncomfortable. I got caught on the inside when a big set rode through. I ditched my board and dove straight into the reef. I basically stuck my chest into the reef. It was chop suey—I was all torn up. I looked like I just got out of some Conan movie—I was sliced across the chest. They call that the “cheese grater.” I got out of the water so I wouldn’t act as chum for the rest of the guys. I was in and out of the water in less than 20 minutes.

It didn’t happen when I was surfing, but when I was learning to kite-board. It was at a place called Boneyards, between Lower Kanaha and what is now called Kite Beach. I knew it was shallow, but I ended up getting scraped over the reef. I got pulled into the middle of this exposed reef. My kite would go, then I’d re-launch it, it would go down again and I’d re-launch it again. My boyfriend Chris was watching me with binoculars from the sewage plant, wondering what the hell I was doing. It was scary. It took me about a half hour to finally get out.

There were all these scratches on my legs and I now had a ripped pair of shorts. When I went to work the next day they said “Oh, Chris took you kite-boarding.” The reef is beautiful, but I try to avoid it.

-Julie Gilbert, Pukalani It’s happened lots of times. One I was in Bali surfing low tide and this local guy and I were trading off waves, tube riding. He hit the reef head first. I jumped off, but landed on my tailbone on the reef. That was brutal. I’ve had a couple good scrapes at Windmills, too. I was just going over the falls and was pressed right into the bottom. The reef is so sharp a lot of times you don’t feel the cuts—unless you hit with real impact. Sometimes you can really slam it. So you go straight in because you’re bleeding so bad you don’t want it infected. You may not want to go in—like when the waves are good and it’s uncrowded—but you have to.

Hitting the Reef

I was surfing Hulopoe Beach Park on Lanai. There were four to six foot backs and a south swell. I got lip-launched on a five foot set. Hulopoe on a low tide boils like water in a hot pot. The reef is swiss cheese with holes 10 feet deep and coral two feet deep. Like I said, I lip launched head first, then smacked my head against the reef. I became semi-conscious. The next wave smashed me again and my board hit me in the head. I got washed up on the reef. I had “reef tattoos” all over my arms and legs.

Fortunately my friend was there to scrub the rocks and coral from my head. Ouch! The bleeding stopped after 20 minutes, then I was back out for more.

It was the first big south swell of this past summer.

There were solid 4-5 footers at Breakwall and it was looking beautiful. The lineup was kind of mixed up. There were lots of people out, but not everyone was taking off.

Everyone saw a big set out back and started paddling. A girl on a long board was paddling hard in front of me. Instead of rolling, ditching or duck-diving she paddled up the face of the wave. I was at the bottom about to duck- dive, looking up at her. I was scared she was going to get pitched on top of me, so I duck-dove. Extra deep. Too deep. I ended up coming up in the back section of the wave. It picked me up and sucked me over right onto the reef. It raked me about four feet across the reef and held me there for a moment.

My hands and feet were cut up. I knew it was bad. I paddled through a few more of the set waves out to where I was comfortable and then felt my thigh. I could feel some meat missing. Like most reef cuts, it didn’t bleed much at first, but when I got to the beach my leg was covered in blood. There were actually little pieces of coral in me that I had to scrub out. It was worth it though.

There’s Cabbage In My Lap I must be at the SandBar & Grill

“This kicks ass!” said my dining companion. He’s referring, of course, to the Lobster Tacos at the SandBar & Grill in Paia.

The tacos are two heaping portions of Brazilian lobster tail, shredded cabbage and cheese, diced tomatoes and a very tasty chipotle sour cream, all precariously placed on soft corn tortillas that are doubled up. They were so good that I really didn’t care about the sauce that inevitably got all over my face, or the cabbage that ended up in my lap. Table manners—who needs ‘em? I’ve got my Lobster Tacos…

While I took a break digesting the last of the tacos and owner Dave’s amazing homemade salsa and guacamole—they’re right, you can eat it with a spoon!—my buddy took a bite of the Kalua Pork Sandwich.

“It tastes like I should be camping,” he said, “and I like camping!”

And it’s just sweet, slow-cooked pork with a hint of smoky flavor on a soft, fresh hoagie roll that’s not overdone with weird stuff, like lettuce and tomato. No excessive fat, no fake barbeque flavoring here, all sauces are homemade.

sume any of the pork sandwich—so I thought— and asked our server for a to-go box. He wasn’t gone very long, but one bite “just to taste it while it’s warm” was all it took. It was so tasty I devoured the whole thing. With my mouth full, I then attempted to motion to him “Thanks, but I wouldn’t actually need that box anymore.”

The SandBar & Grill has been open for just a few short months in the heart of Paia town, and is run by former Oahu residents, Dave and Kristen Roberts. Originally from California, they’ve created a menu that has a definite California beach theme thing going on, with food far better than your typical bar fare.

The ambiance is fun, comfortable, colorful and cheery, and the service is fast and friendly.

The restaurant features a couple of pool tables, new video games and a large bar and—my favorite—a mirror backside so you can peoplewatch everyone in the joint. And they have that damn Caramel Toffee Apple Dip that I am now addicted to. I’m thinking about ordering some with my French fries next time…

Upcountry Cheer Christmas at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center A tropical Maui Christmas beats a cold mainland Christmas any day. About the closest thing to a wintry wonderland is putting on pants and a long sleeve shirt before heading Upcountry at night.

Thanks to the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center’s 25th annual Christmas House celebration, Christmas on Maui will be a bit more Christmasy.

“It won’t be snowing,” said Hui development director Tannis Grimes. “It’s not cold. It’s nice and sunny and the rain is warm if it does rain. We have a tropical flavor, not a mainland style. It is a very local occasion and the ornaments reflect Hawaiian culture. Men can wear Aloha shirts and no one wears a tie.”

Hui No’eau is the leading visual arts school in Hawaii. It is the oldest center and boasts the most historic location of any other art school. They have state of the art studios that no one else has, like the extensive ceramic studios in the old stable.

Their mission is “to encourage and promote the development of artistic expression and creativity in the individual and to stimulate a broader appreciation and understanding of the visual arts as a vital language in our culture. Hui No’eau’s commitment to excellence in the visual arts is fundamental to all its endeavors.”

The Hui’s beautiful 1917-vintage mansion and lush grounds provide a distinctive setting for holiday schmoozing. A special addition this year is the auction of unique ornaments that the Hui commissioned from its artists.

“This is the only event of its kind,” said Grimes. “There are imitators, but nothing like this, in a setting this pretty.”

Local artisans will make and sell handmade gift items, fresh wreaths, and ornaments. The Hui will offer children’s activities, photos with Santa, live music and

dance, delicious food and drink from vendors on the weekends, workshops, and artist demonstrations. The celebration begins with the First Choice Night on Dec. 4 and continues with various interesting attractions through Dec. 13.

First Choice Night is a gala fundraiser to kickoff Christmas House. People can shop under the stars, enjoy fine food at the buffet dinner, have cocktails, and listen to live music.

During the week shopping will be in full swing, along with workshops and demonstrations. Also, business groups can schedule luncheons to entertain colleagues and clients.

the Tom Cherry Band. Over 100 artists will participate. The final day is the much-anticipated Ceramic Sale, which draws many people interested in Hui No’eau’s famous ceramic pieces.

The Hui will hold educational workshops throughout the event. Children’s workshops take place Dec. 6, 7, and 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adults can take advantage of classes on ceramic tile decorating (Dec. 7), glass fusing and slumping (Dec. 9), hand-dyed wrapping paper (Dec. 10), and Holiday Herbal Wreaths (Dec. 12).

Christmas House is open to all and the proceeds go to supporting Hui No’eau’s crucial mission on Maui. The fundraiser helps keep class costs down and provides a space for everyone to come Upcountry to share and experience Maui’s excellent art and Christmas cheer. Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai (1954) is the film credited with bringing the Samurai to the west, and any five minutes of that cinematic masterpiece puts the whole of The Last Samurai to compunction. That Kurosawa’s film was a Japanese interpretation of the Western genre which echoed back to spawn John Sturges’s The Magnificent Seven (1960) is evidence of Kurosawa’s deep assimilation of an American genre to a seemingly esoteric Japanese subject matter.

Where Kurosawa paid tribute to an American genre via deep-seated realities of Japan’s 16th century cultural eruption, Hollywood has taken a Disneyfied screenplay

by John Logan (Gladiator, Any Given Sunday) and produced a sanitized vision of American imperialism parading as individual strength.

There isn’t a human being on the planet who needs to see another American character saunter into a foreign culture he knows nothing about and come out kicking ass as if he taught the natives their own traditions because he’s mastered them so well. To even pretend that this could occur is an open-handed insult regardless of any amount of feigned or real reverence to the precepts of a culture because it carries a harsh tone of patronizing supremacy.

The hardest thing to swallow about The Last Samurai is the dichotomy between the high level of integrity in the efforts of its cast, crew and director, and the faux “epic” script that effectively takes a piss at the very culture it pretends to elevate. Ironically, it’s the credible work of the film’s ensemble that exposes the shallow efforts of John Logan’s script to impose a fictionalized character in a historical milieu that he, the writer, is unequipped to apprehend. What an embarrassment it is to infer that the last living Samurai was, or could be, a foreigner in love with battle.

The Last Samurai is a lush and entertaining Hollywood movie with a typically obtrusive musical score that makes you want to cry for mercy when the orchestra booms through the speakers during the battle scenes. The Tom Cruise acting machine is a mesmerizing entity to observe, and the surprises that Cruise delivers in lingering moments of surreal clarity sparkle with a weightless magic that hovers over the merely passable script.

More than anything else, The Last Samurai is the current Tom Cruise vehicle, and the actor’s capacity to wrestle the story to his own demands is an impressive testament to his multifaceted perfectionist skills. A common public tendency seems to want to diminish Tom Cruise for his outspoken belief system and personal crusades. He’s an impossibly handsome, natural-born movie superstar with an arsenal of technique and pitch perfect instincts who stands up well against every other American movie star that has come before him. He knows his limits and insists on pushing them within very specific constraints.

It’s the same logic that makes actors like Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Al Pacino, Johnny Depp and Sean Penn fascinating on that lofty level that we recognize as weighty, focused and reliable. Cruise will next star in Collateral, a Michael Mann (The Insider) directed crime thriller by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), before going on to Mission Impossible 3, with Joe Carnahan (Narc) at the helm. The future is bright. MTW

Music to Breathe By Thursday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m. at the Renaissance Wailea In a recent interview, Deva Premal explained how chanting is a gift of love and an offering to the divine. When people come and chant together it brings silence into the space and offers the opportunity to breathe together, which rarely happens.

“When people sing together they breathe in the same rhythm and that itself brings a very strong sense of synchronicity,” says Miten. When asked what intention they bring to their music, Miten replied, “It’s pretty organic. We look at the gift of our music as a very precious plant that we’ve been entrusted with. And we take care of that plant to make sure it has the right type of soil, light and the right water. We enjoy seeing it flower. We’re very much in service and have watched how it has touched people. It’s a humbling experience. It is nourishment, like making love. We play because we love to. And the people who come to the concerts bring their love and their reflection. O Banyan Tree, O Banyan Tree Saturday, all day at Banyan Tree Park, Lahaina In a celebration of winter and all things uh, wintery, Lahaina is breaking out the snow and will even make a 6-foot tall snow man who will encourage all our keiki (in his head, of course) to make crafts and dance hula…and have snowball fights, too. There will also be a local author on hand—Barbara Sharp—to sign her Lahaina Mysteries books and Kathy Collins will give a special dramatic storytelling of a holiday classic with a local twist, “Tita’s Night Bafo’ Christmas” at 5 p.m. Santa will be on hand for photo ops and for the competitive types, there’ll be the first annual community Holiday Wreath Contest. The lighting of the Banyan Tree will take place around 6:30 p.m. and I’m sure I’ve left something out of this mega-celebration so you’ll just have to go see for yourself!

If you’ve never been to Bocalino’s down in our southern sister town of Kihei, you’ve been missing out on a cool kind of afterhours ambience. Bocalino’s late-night vibe and sophisticated crowd seem to fill the void that the now defunct, ultra-lounge La Jazzerie once occupied. So this weekend, they’re having an event so stupendous, they’re actually opening the doors on their regular resting day just to entice you with this live music fest which features the likes of Crying Out Loud, The Gina Martinelli Band and The New Project with Gilbert Emata, Jay Molina and Vanessa Rodriguez and M.C. Curtis Williams. Lots of quality musicians, quality cocktails and quality atmosphere makes for a what? That’s right—quality night.

The Rock Opera collaboration is in effect with local entertainers such as Gina Martinelli, Tiffany Lee, Lono, Curtis Williams, Tony Ray and many others.

Patricia Watson is also bringing in recording artist/actor Ed Terry (pictured left), whose eclectic credits include films like Carlitos Way and Species and who has sung with everyone from Slash to Stevie Wonder. Also imported is Lily Acaine, a former Miss Hawaiian Tropics and Baywatch regular—I wonder if there’ll be any jogging on the beach scenes in this stage production? Anyway, this is a musical drama/comedy that somehow connects the music business with a spiritual love story, which is a concept I know nothing about. Much.

One Hell of a Canoe Sunday, 4:30 p.m., Ma’alaea Harbor As far as canoes go, the Hokule’a is pretty sweet. Launched in 1975, it has two 62-foot hulls, two masts, weighs eight tons and can carry five and a half tons of provisions and 16 crewmembers. The canoe’s name, which is Hawaiian for Arcturus, came to the designer—like all traditional Hawaiian canoe names—in a dream.

Constructed of plywood, fiberglass and resin (working traditional materials like koa wood was deemed too time-consuming), the canoe can range thousands of miles across the Pacific. And this week, it arrives at the Maui Ocean Center with all the flare of “traditional Hawaiian protocol.” After, Hokule’a commander Nainoa Thompson will give a “Sea Talk” on the canoe’s history. HATEBREED “THE RISE OF BRUTALITY” Hatebreed writes inspirational music. Now you may wonder how a band called Hatebreed with a record entitled The Rise Of Brutality can inspire, but it does. Though my youthful angst has aged and matured into dry, sardonic cynicism, Hatebreed’s message of self reliance, respect and brutal honesty in cuts like “Straight To Your Face” had me saying fuck you to The Man after one spin. Taking the raw intensity and sing-along battle-cry of East Coast Hardcore and layering it with ten-ton slabs of crushing metal riffs (think Sick Of It All crashes head-on into Slayer), Hatebreed has recruited a huge, loyal following and have seen substantial success without major label support. Hatebreed writes “A Lesson Lived Is A Lesson Learned” and like my dad always says—“You had to learn it the hard way didn’t you?” Yes sir, just like Hatebreed. —Universal/Stillborn [SPIKE FUQUA]

HOTWIRE “THE ROUTINE” Hotwire’s debut record The Routine is just that—routine. It’s like a good high that wears off too quick, leaving me feeling ripped off and disillusioned.

It’s too bad because they start out with some cool Quicksand/Helmet moments on “Invisible” and “Not Today,” then spiral miserably into “whiny bitch emo-rock” that doesn’t know when to stop crying, and when to just fucking rock! Though Hotwire have potential and can maybe pull out a better second effort, your best bet is to score Chevelle’s Wonder What’s Next or either of Quicksand’s two records. I suppose it didn’t help that I listened to Hatebreed’s new one right before this one either, but regardless, this is pretty wussy all by itself. —RCA Records 2003 [SPIKE FUQUA]

“CONCERTO SUITE FOR ELECTRIC GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA IN E FLAT MINOR OP.1” Swedish Heavy-Metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Johann Malmsteen is one of the finest players on the planet. I’ve seen him live twice, but every band he’s ever been in has sucked ass! This guy’s guitar work is insane but he always ends up with some Spinal Tap-ish dickhead singing some third-rate Deep Purple wannabe shite. So when I saw the word “instrumental” I was elated to finally be able to enjoy some of Yngwie’s dexterous ripping without the mullet-headed dummies behind him. This time he’s wisely chosen the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague to bring his life-long dream of being a classical composer to reality. Like the men he idolizes (Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and my personal fave, Ludwig Van Beethoven), he finally has a good record. If you’re a rock fan but don’t know your Allegro from your Adagio and want to refine and enlighten your musical tastes, this Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar is a perfect start. —Spitfire Records [SPIKE FUQUA]

VARIOUS ARTISTS “EURO LOUNGE” European cities boast huge cultural melting pots where DJs combine the most modern electronica with traditional grooves from the Continent, Africa, Asia and Latin America. Putumayo Music captures the cosmopolitan flavor on Euro Lounge, a compilation that includes stellar tracks covering the best music scenes on the map. Thievery Corporation, originally from D.C., is the most well-known outfit on the album. They collaborate with Iranian-French singer Lou Lou on “Un Simple Historie,” a sophisticated, organic track that melds French poetry with deep bass lines and Asian spice. Italy is represented five times with each artist putting forth a distinct style within the framework of Italian suave. Turkey is in Europe, too, and Ilhan Ersahin comes through with ethereal vocals, a funky groove and Near Eastern flavor. VARIOUS ARTISTS “AFRICAN GROOVE” Africa is the birthplace of humanity and the source of all modern music in some way or another. African musicians are now incorporating modern production into their traditional recordings and masterfully combining electronica with their native sounds. South African music comes in many forms. Ndumiso, a gifted trumpeter, blends jazz, funk and township flavors with a deep kwaito beat. He toured for years with Lucky Dube and now is in high demand. African Rhythm Travellers are a black and white conglomerate from South Africa who shout out a danceable cry for racial unity. The Thievery Corporation shines again on this CD with “The Lagos Communique,” which is like an electronic Fela Kuti song plus sitars. Issa Bagayogo comes from Mali, a country with some of the world’s most amazing guitarists. He deftly mixes his homeland’s guitar stylings with some deep, dancey grooves. HOT BUNNIES AND COLD TURKEYS There comes a point in every single girl’s life when she’s faced with an invitation so daunting, so rife with debaucherous potential that she must question her morality, her integrity, her…

“What do I wear?” I asked Rudi, my roommate.

With Rudi in a pimpin’ silk robe that would make ol’ Hef proud, and me strategically stuffed into a bustier that was about as subtle as the Bush administration, we eagerly donned our fuzzy slippers and headed to a Playboy Mansion Birthday Bash in Lahaina last Wednesday.

Oh sure, there were legions of garters and feather boas, high heels and stockings, naughty nighties and peek-a-boo lacey things on the dance floor, at the bar, in the love den— Now before I tell you about the love den, I must point out that for a party advertised and marketed as a “Playboy Mansion”-themed event, there sure weren’t many representatives of the male species in the house. Did the party sound too good to be true? Intimidating, perhaps?

Anyway, there was a really hot bartender in booty shorts, boa and cowboy hat dancing and flirting with the patrons. Okay—fun, cute, snazzy dresser, great dancer—can we guess what the catch is here, folks? Yeah, he’s from Miami.

So the love den was this large, dimly lit room towards the back that was filled wall-to-wall with big, cushy pillows and lots of multi-colored, silky scarves. It looked like there should be some people smoking opium there, naked and languorous. Other than the requisite couple or two making out, the room remained fairly untouched by the dancing and drinking bunnies and their cohorts—another big surprise.

There was also a Twister game set up in a remote, private corner of this party palace. For a while, I watched two girls in black diaphanous lingerie bend and stretch over each other on top of the red, yellow, green and blue circles, giggling and completely unself-conscious. I was aghast that there was no one around to witness this, as Rudi certainly did not believe my verbal account later.

The night’s pièce de résistance, however, was Louie.

As I’m chatting with the gorgeous birthday girl Stacy, and her handsome hunk boyfriend Pat, Stacy goes flying backwards into the lap of one grinning, wig-wearing, cigar-chomping, wheelchair-bound Louie, a.k.a. Larry Flint. As he leaves me to clean up the red wine off of Stacy’s white undie-clad bottom, we notice that the back of his rented wheelchair is painted with the insignia “HUSTLER” and “1-800-555-CLIT.” Throughout the night, Larry/Louie plowed through crowds of Playboys and Girls, groping and grinning and stage diving off the dance floor in his mobile seat.

Rudi and I were lucky enough to be invited to not one but two Thanksgiving feasts upcountry on Thursday, so we grabbed our bottle of vino, case of Beck’s Winter Brew and my Sweet Potato Crystallized Ginger Salad and headed to Makawao.

Kirsten, Arica and I cleared the long banquet table for the endless array of casseroles, salads, breads and stuffing. Hans and John pulled the turkey from the imu pit they dug the night before, and Ian, Rudi and all the boys played horseshoes in the backyard. Cayce scared and amused everyone as he got out his rifle “to shoot the rats in the trees” and Hans noted of the pupus that, “you just can’t go wrong with salami.”

There were about fifty of us, and we all gathered together in a circle to give thanks. Then John rang the dinner triangle and we stampeded to the table.

The dessert table was even more inundated than the previous course: homemade apple and pumpkin pies, pumpkin cheesecake, cakebreads and cookies abound. I talked with everybody about having Thanksgiving quarterly.

We then trailed off to Mat & Reeny’s house, i.e. The Compound in Haiku, to share in their huge, organized, tent-covered, Port-a-potty enabled gathering. Rudi and I were a bit late for the food, but not the keg of Newcastle—yippee! Reeny kept teasing me with enticing tales she WOULDN’T disclose for this column but ha! I’ll get you yet, my pretty!

And it was good to see Dave back from rescuing Mike from the side of the road, Lawai’a’s Brian I’m-not-a-drummer-I’m-a-HandPercussionist, Scott, Tami and Pete and the whole gang all leaning back, phat and happy. MTW
