NEWS

2005 IN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Not only did “Uh Oh: I think I Caused the Po’ouli Bird to Go Extinct” (Dec. 23, 2004) have no redeeming qualities whatsoever, the writing was abysmal… Please, only reference remarks to me which I have actually made… Why are you attacking The Maui News, and spreading lies and misinformation? Please stop this and begin telling the truth… Why do you put these things in your paper?… I also noticed you defended his work like a bratty frat brother. All of you seem young, trying your best to make a paper but coming off dorky! I guarantee I can write better, HONEST and more fascinating articles… If you grow out of your apparent hipster phase you will learn that it is not “mediocre” to be short and fat… There’s more to life than being hip and sharp witted… Your juvenile writers misrepresent their subjects and that is just fine with you Mr. Pignataro?… Your articles are boring lies. You need competition fast and that will be easy to do when an intelligent, young writer comes to the island and feels like starting a new rag… Maui Time is good for puppy poop training. By the way your astrologer is retarded and vile… Thank you for the article you wrote about me in the May 26, 2005 Maui Time Weekly. While it is generally a nice article, I hope that readers were able to get past the headline and the unflattering caption under the photo… In our initial reading of that article it struck us like someone swinging a Louisville Slugger right into the frontal lobe of the skull!… Your article was, essentially, a grave insult to these people and, we believe, warrants an apology to them, and all the Hawaiian people!… So why is [it] that you feel compelled to add your own sarcastic, derogatory editorial comments whenever you don’t agree with the popular votes? Why ask the unenlightened public their opinion if you are subse-

quently going to bash them for their horrible tastes and lack of insight?… Not only our staff but our members are offended by your description of our yacht club and find your column appalling… I am very disappointed to see you promote that most disgusting ritual of American piggery and stupidity, the hot dog eating contest… In which case, why should I even buy your paper? You say it’s free? Well, at least I can’t complain I haven’t gotten my money’s worth. Regardless, even as you seem intent on incessantly proving to us how fabulously discerning, politically correct and environmentally aware you are, you are too often shooting yourself in the foot. I would presume someday you’d all like to work for a paper that actually has a paid circulation. Perhaps your intent in voicing your sense of loathing for the ridiculously stupid public you serve is in hopes a big time editor from the NY Times or Minneapolis Free Press vacationing on Maui will read your piece and subsequently offer you a high-paying job in the Big Apple so you can get out of this dump where no one knows their butt from a coconut and move into an environment where other people are as hip and cool as you. ehbrah@mauitime.com This goes out to the douchebag who hit me with their car the night before Thanksgiving in the Kahana parking lot. You hit me—my person—not my car or some other inanimate object. I couldn’t walk for weeks. You hit me and then drove off like a pussy. Oh, wait, I forgot: you hit another person, too. But that guy was special—so special you dragged him down underneath your piece of shit car. So how’s your Christmas shaping up, asshead? What are your plans? Maybe go searching for a school bus filled with kids so you can spread some more of your holiday cheer? For your sake you better hope I don’t find out where you are hiding. Because if I do Santa will be coming to town and he hates you.

Unnecessary Evil Blowing up the ticking bomb myth soldiers (interrogators).” “These kids—as bright and dedicated to their mission as they may be—lack meaningful life, let alone professional, experiences,” said Christino. They know nothing about the language or culture of the people they question. It would be more honest to market torture as a fun way to hurt people we don’t like while getting our collective rocks off. It’s certainly not a way to protect America, for even if the government were to beat the one-in-a-billion odds against arresting a terrorist who knew the location of a ticking bomb, they don’t employ anyone smart enough to find out before it’s too late. MTW

PHOTO: U.S. AIR FORCE

Look out! It’s ticking! Some urban myths refuse to die. One notorious myth, the “ticking bomb scenario,” has led to torture, murder and the potentially permanent diminishment of America’s reputation as a civilized nation. On Dec. 13, 2005, The New York Times reported: “The White House prefers, in background conversations, to talk about the ‘doomsday scenario’: What would happen if the president believed a nuclear device had been planted in an American city, and interrogators had just minutes to extract information about its location from a terror suspect?” The piece went on to note that “some legal authorities” think that the president’s powers include “torturing a suspect believed to have information about where a nuclear bomb is hidden.” The ticking bomb scenario gets dragged out whenever some sadistic politician or pundit wants to fire up the old electrodes on a few swarthy undesirables. It was the plot line of the Fox television series 24, in which a counterterrorist agent played by Keifer Sutherland tortures baddies to save the world. “It goes with the ‘24’ conceit that we need information and don’t have days to break this person,” executive producer Howard Gordan told USA Today. “In some ways, [Sutherland’s character] is a necessary evil.” Is the good of the many worth doing evil to a few? Not to me. I’d rather be incinerated than live in a society that depends on torture for its safety. Regardless of this hypothetical dilemma, however, no evil could be more unnecessary than torture in the name of the theoretical ticking bomb. Nuclear weapons have been around for 60 years, terrorism much longer than that. But no country has ever faced a ticking bomb scenario, whether nuclear

or conventional. For his exhaustively researched The Good Listener, Neil Benton found only one case where authorities faced such a situation—sort of. In 1956, French police in the restive colony of Algeria, having caught a communist in the act planting a bomb, worried that he might have already hidden a second explosive device. They considered, then rejected, torturing the suspect as a means of finding out. And it turns out there wasn’t a second bomb. Bush Administration officials, who might have avoided misadventures in Afghanistan and Iraq by reading a little British military history, pride themselves on making their own reality. Gleefully skating on historically thin ice, Justice Department lawyer Jay S. Bybee (since promoted by Bush to federal judge) relied on ticking bomb mythology to justify abusing prisoners in one of Bush’s infamous 2002 “torture memos”: “Clearly, any harm that might occur during an interrogation would pale into significance compared to the harm avoided by preventing such an attack.” By the way, torture doesn’t work. “Ultimately, the purpose of torture is torture,” says former CIA interrogator Milton Bearden, in David Rose’s book Guantánamo. “The way you do get information from people is through a process that amounts of recruitment, by doing deals.” A veteran FBI special agent adds that, “more often, he had ‘flipped’ witnesses by taking pains to build trust and rapport.” Anyway, amateurs are working the terror beat. Anthony Christino III, a lieutenant colonel who retired after 20 years as a counterterrorism specialist for the U.S. Army, told Rose that “there are now simply no military intelligence personnel of officer rank in the U.S. Army who specialize in interrogation, as there were during the Vietnam War and earlier. Today, this crucial job is left to warrant officers (interrogation technicians) and enlisted

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a Dec. 19, 2005 press release announcing her Fiscal Year 2007 Budget Plan: “State departments and programs have had to operate under stringent conditions for many years when the economy was performing poorly and general fund revenues were inadequate to meet community needs. With easing financial constraints, we can now address these public funding issues in a fiscally positive environment.”

What she didn’t say: The state Board of Education says it needs $94.3 million to fund its operating costs and another $368 million for “capital improvement,” which includes fixing 97 aging schools, according to the Dec. 21, 2005 Honolulu Advertiser. That’s $462.3 million total. Yet Lingle’s new budget plan includes just $138.8 million for public education—a little less than half of which goes towards capital improvement. And times aren’t exactly tough, either: Lingle’s budget also includes a whopping $300 million in “tax relief.”

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, DEC. 21 The U.S. Senate voted to kill oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) today, breaking the little hearts of both the Republican Party and our own pro-oil Democratic Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye. What a shame. And it looked like such a winner, too, what with powerful pro-drilling Senator Ted Stevens (R, Alaska) taking the lowest of the lowest roads by tacking the ANWR legislation onto a defense bill funding our troops overseas. Yet the Democrats (our boys excepted) didn’t flinch, and fought it anyways.

THURSDAY, DEC. 22 Got an email today notifying me that my repeated mentions in LC Watch of the name of defense attorney Dave Jorgensen’s law firm have been wrong. The real and true name of the firm is Ing, Horikawa, Jorgensen and Stewart. Normally I’d put a correction like this over on the Letters to the Editor page, but this week that space is reserved for a special year-in-review thing, which you should really check out because I really worked hard on it.

FRIDAY, DEC. 23 So the Honolulu Star-Bulletin tells us today that the recent emergency heart surgery for Don Ho, 75, has really taught the Waikiki musical legend that he’s getting old. What tipped him off? Twelve “episodes” last month that set his pacemaker off? Yeah, 12. One happened onstage in Waikiki. “I just slumped over,” Ho told the StarBulletin. “They had to drag me off the stage. That sorta tells me something is really wrong.” But according to the

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

paper, that wasn’t the one that “sealed the deal.” No, Ho didn’t opt for surgery until he had an attack while doing home improvement. “I had climbed up on my roof to do some repairs, and all of a sudden my heart just took off and I wanted to slow it down but I couldn’t,” he said. Let’s ponder this a moment. Not long after his heart goes haywire in the middle of a show, Ho—who knew his heart was working at “30 percent”—climbs up onto his roof to work. Man, cardio surgeons have it made! That’s the wave of the future, right there. See, Ho’s renovated ticker wasn’t cheap: a recent Time story on the TheraVitae medical company that saved Ho reported that the procedure costs $30,000—and it’s not even approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration! According to Time, treating heart disease is a $54 billion-ayear business. Fifty-four billion! Every year! Here’s the ticket: invest all your dough in the medical industry and fast food—you can’t lose!

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

SATURDAY, DEC. 24 The 29th Brigade Combat Team of the Hawai’i National Guard is headed home from a year’s tour in Iraq. Or rather, they’re headed to “one of six demobilization centers,” according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser. After a year spent tooling around central Iraq, those “centers” must seem like magical places to the soldiers. Anyway, the article gives a pretty thorough accounting of what the brigade has been doing with itself over there: 16 soldiers killed, 83 wounded, 66 Iraqi “detainees,” 650 artillery rounds and rockets found, 127,725 “local nationals” trying to enter Camp Victory screened and so forth. Needless to say, people are mighty proud. “You have not only honorably and courageously served the United States,” Governor

OVERHEARD... “JUST BECAUSE I WAS A VICTIM OF ANTISEMITISM, IT DOESN’T MEAN I’M JEWISH.”

Linda Lingle is quoted as saying in the article, “but you have also made history and touched lives.” Is that what they were sent over there to do? Make history? Touch lives? See, I don’t exactly remember the war starting for those specific reasons. Rather, I remember back in early 2003 that people like President George W. Bush were saying we had to invade and conquer Iraq immediately or else Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was going to unleash a “mushroom cloud” on us—you know, nuke us with those “manned and unmanned aircraft” he was hording, or poison us with all of his “mobile bioweapons labs.” Yeah, I’m pretty sure the whole make history and touch lives stuff came later—after we found out all Bush’s imminent threat stuff was just bullshit. But hey, it’s totally cool that our boys and girls are coming home.

We’re encouraging too many rubes and tourists to visit Hawai’i. That’s the stunning verdict of George Ariyoshi’s latest column in the December, 2005 issue of Hawai’i Business. “If you go to an industry event today, as I did in my tenure as chairman of Prince Hotels, the subject often turns to creating more attractions for visitors,” Ariyoshi wrote. “To my mind such thinking will lead to a busy, honky-tonk environment that is the opposite of what people really seek in Hawai’i: a well-caredfor, peaceful place with great natural charms.” It’s a far-reaching but highly astute observation: people come to Hawai’i to see paradise, but the more you cater to those people coming here the less Hawai’i looks like paradise. I just have one question: what have you done with the real George Ariyoshi?! Did pods from space come down and take over his body? We’re talking George Ariyoshi here—the same Ariyoshi who, as state governor from 1973 to 1986, never met a resort developer he didn’t like. And this is the same Ariyoshi who, after leaving the state house, went to work for Prince Hotels, one of the state’s premier resorts. That was apparently all fine and dandy for the last 30 years, but now Ariyoshi says we need to think harder about the “kind of visitors” we want to bring. He’s for shipping over more rich people, since people with no money tend to be bad for business: “I submit that a slower growth rate,” he wrote, “will help us attract visitors who spend more, while a higher rate will tend to drive away the affluent visitor.”

MONDAY, DEC. 26 Honky-tonk?

TUESDAY, DEC. 27 Can you tell Congress is on vacation? I can. I feel safer and more secure. The only thing that would make us safer is if President Bush would take another six-week vacation in Crawford, Texas. And then just stay there for the rest of his life. Biggest news this week is Makena Resort’s move out of the cellar. Not far, but a little bit’s better than nothing. The reason, naturally, has to do with Slurpees. See, the 7-Eleven convenience store giant—which for some reason only has two stores on Maui—just decided to become the largest retail conglomerate in Japan. To do so, 7Eleven’s parent company Seven & I Holdings, Inc. had to buy Millennium Retailing, Inc., which owns the Japanese Seibu and Sogo department store chains. The Seibu name is key: Millennium Retailing recently teamed up with the massive Seibu Railway Company, which among many other holdings owns Makena Resort. And in other news, Maui Land & Pineapple’s successful efforts to shove squatters out of its Haile Maile village keeps that landowner in the top slot. MTW

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD BREAST NEWS EVER The Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, Netherlands, announced recently that retail studies student Wendy Rameckers had designed a wall with rows of silicon breasts in various shapes, primarily, she said, to help male shoppers decide what size bra to buy for their women. And prominent British futurist Ian Pearson of BT Laboratories told reporters in October that he could see the day when breast implants house MP3 players to give the implants some actual functionality.

GOOD MEDICAL COVERAGE The increased expectations of fans have driven today’s bullfighters to use riskier moves than their predecessors did, and competition has pressured them to return to work quickly after being gored. As a result, according to a November Wall Street Journal dispatch from Madrid, up to three dozen elite surgeons, highly skilled in complicated procedures, follow the bullfight circuit, on call to repair serious injuries that formerly would kill or maim a matador. In fact, most bullfighters today have already endured several critical gorings but remain eager to work.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS The hit TV series Frasier grossed $1.5 billion during its 11-year run, but according to the show’s executives (responding to a recent lawsuit by the program’s creators for a greater share of the “profits”), the traditional Hollywood accounting methods reveal that the show earned no profit over its lifetime but actually lost $200 million.

company Endemol NV were working to set up 4 million dominoes in an attempt at a new Guinness Book record, a sparrow flew in through a window, landed on the formation, and toppled about 23,000 of them before built-in gaps stopped the collapse. An exterminator with an air rifle tracked the bird down in the building and killed it, to the outrage of animal rights advocates.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Michael Drennon, 26, was charged with bank robbery in Bensalem, Pa., in October after accidentally dropping his pay stub at the scene, even though he had cleverly blotted out his name and address with a black indelible marker. (Bensalem’s director of public safety said the stub was easy to read: “We just (held) it under a light.”) And Louis Jasick, 34 and a friend who were involved in a scavenger hunt knocked on the back door of the police station in Fruitport Township, Mich., in November to ask if officers would please help with the next item on their list and pose for a photograph of a cop eating a doughnut. The officers obliged but one of them recognized Jasick from a recent felony warrant and arrested him.

CHILD SUPPORT FOLLIES News of the Weird has reported several times about hard-luck men who, believing they are biological fathers, agree to child support, only to learn via a DNA test that they are not, but whom judges will not let rescind those agreements. An even more ironic case emerged from the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal in December. A man had originally agreed to support his new wife’s daughter, but then he and his wife divorced, and the court ruled he must continue to support the girl even though the wife has now married the man who is the girl’s biological father. ‘My Meeting’ Will Charlie Jencks finally get his Wailea 670? After nearly 20 years, it looks like the Wailea 670 project may finally get a hearing before the Maui County Council. Well, the Maui County Council Land Use Committee, to be exact. Same members as the council, but they focus on planning matters. Anyway, the important thing is that we won’t have to listen to any more whining from Charlie Jencks that he’s been denied a hearing for his massive South Maui proposed development. “I’m still waiting for my meeting,” said Jencks—who represents Cargill Group, Lehman Brothers, Woodbridge Capital and the other Wailea 670 investors—at the Kihei Community Association back in

Wailea 670 The Maui County Land Use Committee will hold its Wailea 670 hearing on Jan. 4, 2006 at 6 p.m. at Lokelani Intermediate School, 1401 Liloa Dr., Kihei. sumption, Jencks always spins Wailea 670 as “affordable” and community-friendly. Jencks insists the landowners scrapped the project’s original requirement that gates wall off the entire community in the face of public outcry, though individual property owners will still have the option of gating their homes, much as they do in Kapalua.

“THE DEVELOPMENT, TO BE A COMMUNITY OF ESTATES, VILLAS AND LUXURY MULTI-FAMILY UNITS, WILL INCLUDE A PRIVATE COUNTRYCLUB AND WORLD CLASS GOLF COURSE, AND PROMISES TO BE MAUI’S PREMIUM UPSCALE COMMUNITY IN COMING YEARS.” March. To be sure, Wailea 670 has been on the council agenda at least since 1992, when the Maui County Planning Commission approved Jencks’ rezoning request, but big projects that convert 670 acres of hitherto undeveloped land into 1,400 homes ought to go rather slow. Then again, Jencks is paid to push things. Jencks is the president of the Maui Contractors Association, a construction industry lobbying group. Jencks, as a former Maui County public works director, also exemplifies the “revolving door” that allows public officials to profit handsomely from their previous public sector connections and expertise by walking into far more lucrative corporate jobs. A self-styled “strong supporter of Education,” Jencks helped out his good friend and fellow developer Everett Dowling last year in his quest to strip the Akaku public access cable channel of a third of its state funding, saying the money should instead go to the state Department of Education. Ironically, at the same time Jencks was pleading with the state Senate to slash Akaku’s budget he and a handful of other Dowling cronies were fighting for seats on the station’s board of directors. That action threw the station that prides itself on running gavel-to-gavel coverage of local planning hearings into chaos and the courts, where it remains to this day. Indeed, developers have taken to calling the whole thing “Honua’ula,” which they say means “red earth” (I’ve seen it translated as “dark sugar cane.”) Anyway, it’s an unmistakable attempt to get people thinking of the 1,400home project as being environmentally friendly. Material meant for more corporate audiences have a remarkably different feel. One statement, placed on the website for the Honolulu-based Hawaiiana Group—one of Wailea 670’s corporate investors— brings to mind thoughts of unsurpassed wealth and luxury: “The development, to be a community of estates, villas and luxury multi-family units, will include a private country-club and world class golf course, and promises to be Maui’s premium upscale community in coming years.” Premium, affordable, what’s the difference? Sounds like a good first question for Jencks from the committee members. MTW

LC Watch The Investigator

Maui County Liquor Control Officer John McMurray spent well over an hour on the stand during the Board of Adjudication’s Dec. 1, 2005 hearing. The hearing concerned Lahaina’s Moose McGillycuddy’s, which was ultimately found not guilty on three counts relating to over-serving customer Edilberto B. Larrobis. Field Supervisor McMurray, who’s been with the LC for nearly 12 years, provided the entire prosecution case. His testimony and subsequent cross-examination provides a unique look into how LC investigators do their jobs:

• McMurray filled his report with colorful descriptions of Larrobis’ drunkenness when he tried to interview him at 2 a.m. at the Lahaina police station, but admitted on the stand that he had “no idea” what condition Larrobis had been in when he actually left Moose’s at 12:30 a.m. (Larrobis eventually pleaded guilty to driving under the influence). •McMurray testified that he knew all about Moose’s “Green Light, Yellow Light, Red Light” program for flagging potentially drunk customers—“Moose McGillycuddy’s has a very good program,” he said—but apparently never asked anyone at Moose’s whether the program had worked in Larrobis’ case. •McMurray told the board that he knew Moose’s kept an incident log of customer problems, but neglected to mention it in his report. •McMurray failed to put in his report that a Maui police officer had been standing outside Moose’s door when club security guards threw out Larrobis at 12:30 and subsequently reported that Larrobis’ behavior didn’t seem excessive. •McMurray explained that he doesn’t “know the physics” of how long it takes alcohol to get absorbed into the blood, said he didn’t think a person “had to be an expert” to tell if someone is intoxicated, but then admitted that some kind of training in alcohol absorption would probably be beneficial.

Franti A morning of King Kong, yoga and peace with Michael Franti By Samantha Campos

COVER STORY

A

After a fairly long drive up and down dirt roads in the maze-like rural neighborhoods of Haiku makai, Michael Franti greets me with a warm smile. He is standing alone in the middle of an unpaved lot between a cottage under construction and a larger expanse of property devoted to the yogic commune of Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane. I quickly eschewed my preservative-laden coffee for a friendly, organic embrace from the protest music icon. A tall yet supremely graceful man, Franti leads me down a short path to a deck that opens up to a sweeping view of the ocean and an expanse of dense tropical forest. He introduces me to his six-year-old son Adé and begins to roll out his yoga mat. Franti has been doing yoga for years. But he first met Modestini and Doane, of Maya Yoga Studio in Haiku, at the Gathering of the Vibes music festival in New York. “I was looking up into the sunlight and saw a silhouette of a petite woman and a bald man—he coulda been Gandhi,” says Franti. “They were beaming at me and said, ‘Hi! We’re here to teach you yoga!’” Long-time fans and yoga instructors, Modestini and Doane agreed to follow Franti on tour, teaching yoga daily in exchange for a spot on the bus. Ultimately, the partnership led to public yoga workshops with Franti on acoustic guitar. “It’s a lot different than just playing CDs in class,” says Franti. “A lot of my songs are about what’s going on in the world and making a positive change. It goes nicely with [yoga] practice.” Franti’s musical career began in 1986, when he founded an industrial hip-hop duo in the Bay Area called The Beatnigs. With a cult-like following and much critical acclaim, Franti carried the underground momentum and politically active lyricism to the Disposable Heroes of HipHoprisy. A few years later, he became the frontman for the collective Spearhead, which became an amalgamation of many musical influences—hip-hop, soul, reggae, funk and jazz—without losing any of Franti’s passion, style or socio-political integrity. Indeed, Franti’s politics seemed to propel him forward. In 1999 he founded the annual Power to the Peaceful festival in San Francisco with a group of artists as a forum to speak out about the plight of incarcerated journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. After 9/11, lyrics from his song, “Bomb the World” made it onto T-shirts, protest signs and CNN: “You can bomb the world to pieces, but you can’t bomb it into peace.” Frustrated by the lack of information about what was going on in the Middle East, Franti decided to see for himself. So he packed his guitar, a video camera and began talking to everyone he could find: U.S. soldiers, an Iraqi heavy metal band, children in hospitals recovering from bomb injuries. He called the resulting documentary I Know I’m Not Alone. And although he’s been playing music for nearly 20 years, Franti insists he’s “just getting going.” But how does an activist-musician-filmmaker-father cope with the demands of such a rigorous schedule? How does Franti deal with the negativity, political restraints, ignorance and social injustices that he protests, as well as keep the peace at home? Does he ever just, you know, relax? Franti starts his morning warm-up sitting cross-legged, upright and breathing deeply. Facing the ocean, he continues with a fluid series of dynamic poses—Sun Salutation into Forward Bend, then Downward-Facing Dog into Four-Limbed Staff Pose, back to Downward-Facing Dog, Warrior I, Warrior II, Triangle Pose and so on. As tiny beads of sweat collect on his forehead, I take in our lush surroundings. The two-storied, naturally bleached wood deck is nestled amongst an amorphous thicket of wild palms, ginger and bamboo. A gentle swoosh of wind through the trees merges with the distant sound of rushing tides, interrupted only occasionally by wild birds, a helicopter or the moo of a cow. Franti is in Relaxation Pose now, on his back. His face is peaceful, and arms and legs are splayed out. Adé, who had been keeping himself busy with a plastic figurine, turns to crawl over to his father. Franti opens his eyes and reaches out for Adé. The two hold each other close and giggle.

With his son in his lap, Franti picks up his guitar and begins strumming. Adé resumes playing, stopping once to swat a mosquito on his father’s knee. Franti laughs. “They get me everywhere!” he says. “Me and my partner made an agreement to try not to scratch. We figure in 15 minutes it’ll go away.” “They get me on my ears!” says Adé, frowning. Carla Swanson, Franti’s partner of little more than a year, is an art director, graphic designer, film editor and motion graphics artist originally from Oahu. She’s done a lot of work in Hollywood films, as well as Franti’s I Know I’m Not Alone documentary. “She does all our graphics for our website,” says Franti. “We have a great partnership—and it’s great when we can work together.” Aside from Adé, Franti also has an 18-year old son named Cappy. The whole clan lives in the Bay Area. “I’m a city person,” says Franti. “I like the anonymity of the city— blending in with the crowd. It’s nice to escape the city to come here but I can never live here [in Haiku]—it’s too rural, too isolated. It’d

not the only person in the world who wants peace.” It was a difficult time for him and his family. But what he eventually realized was that he wasn’t on the side of the U.S., Iraq, Palestine or Israel. His allies were the peacemakers, individuals around the world dedicated to ending conflict. A young woman with an embroidered “K” on her shirt steps onto the deck, casually greets everyone and sits down. Fresh out of her yoga practice, she says she’s having “bad car karma today.” Adé joins in with his own tale of monster trucks. Soon they’re talking about King Kong again. As Franti rocks him in his lap, Adé continues. “…and she was chased by three T-Rexes! I liked it when she tried to make the mouth close and she could juggle him a little with her feet…” K walks into one of the cottages and puts on some instrumental holiday music. As “Jingle Bell Rock” permeates the tranquil surroundings, the property caretaker arrives, contemplating out loud if he should climb a nearby tree to get some coconuts. Franti nudges Adé.

A tall yet supremely graceful man, Franti leads me down a short path to a deck that opens up to a sweeping view of the ocean and an expanse of dense tropical forest. He introduces me to his six-year-old son Adé and begins to roll out his yoga mat. drive me crazy. Mostly we just come [to Maui] and stop.” As Franti is talking, his left hand idly holds guitar chords while Adé takes over strumming. We somehow start talking about King Kong. “I loved that movie,” says Franti as Adé’s eyes grow wide. “We’ve already seen it twice. When he’s fighting the T-Rexes and all the little insects—it’s really disturbing. But it’s really emotional, too.” It’s hard to believe the movie could be any more of a rollercoaster than Franti’s past year, what with the completion of his documentary, the authoring of the DVD, touring solo with the film, playing acoustically after screenings, touring with the band, recording two studio albums and finishing a book about the documentary. Then, of course, there have been a few natural disasters as well. “This year’s been such an intense year,” says Franti. “Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, turmoil—it’s been a really emotional year for me and everyone I know. The two things in my life that help me to release are music and yoga.” Last month, Franti performed at Folsom Prison. While he was there, he asked a lifer, “What is it that keeps you going?” Franti says the inmate said he didn’t have one phone number he could call, that everyone he knew was dead or in jail and no one in his family wanted anything to do with him. “But the one thing I have,” he said to Franti, “is my ability to give and receive compassion.” “That’s what I get from my practice in yoga,” says Franti. “To be compassionate with myself and to practice that with other people—sometimes that’s harder than just doing something nice for other people. You start to feel crappy about mistakes you’ve made, your past…” Franti’s voice trails off. He looks out into the tropical horizon. “So I still have to think about what I’m gonna let go of,” he says. “It’s kinda intimate, I’m gonna have to spend some time with it.” This year, he admits, it might the fear of being judged by other people. When Franti first began speaking against the war on tour, he’d get boo-ed on stage, as well as hate mail and threats. He was told he wasn’t being patriotic. “I know, because of my experience traveling,” he says, “I’m

“You should get one,” he says. “Maybe a small one,” says Adé, shyly. The caretaker and Franti talk about the impending whale season and K asks if anyone wants tea. K described her recent travails with a moldy biodiesel tank and the joys of a newly purchased dehumidifier. Adé finishes a drawing of Kong-inspired monsters, which Franti fills in with color and hands back to his son. Then he picks up his guitar. Leaning forward a little, he starts singing. “You tell me lies, lies, lies—sweet little lies…” Adé reaches out, pressing his hand against the strings of the bridge as his father strums, creating a muted, hollow plucking sound that makes Franti smile. “And I cannot bear the truth…” Franti cues his son to do it again and laughs, continuing his song. “Tell me that the whole world is wonderful—that the bank account is full—that we got time—that I ain’t gonna lose my mind. Tell me lies, lies, lies…” Adé interrupts, wanting help with “trying to make a guy floating” in his next drawing. Franti stops his song, flips his guitar over and uses it as a drawing table while he consults with Adé on the sketch. “You could put hair on him, too,” says Franti. “I know,” says Adé, “but he’s a skeleton dude.” K asks Franti about possible vendors at the New Year’s Eve yoga workshop where Franti will be performing acoustically. They discuss the possibilities of bigger future events, involving many musicians and yoga instructors. “Maui is the Jurassic Park of yoga,” says K. “Would you be the Velociraptor or T-Rex of yoga?” asks Franti. “Mmm… Velociraptor,” says K. “Though I’m T-Rex in chaturanga [a challenging yoga push-up]!” They laugh. “I think I’m still one of the one-celled organisms,” says Franti. DINING

Have you ever had one of those days when everything goes your way and nothing seems to bring you down? I had one last Wednesday. With family and friends in town, the day started with the decision to jump in the water at Twin Falls. As we navigated Hana Highway’s bends and curves, our bouncing stomachs reminded us to eat breakfast. Knowing that once we reached the falls our prospects for food would be limited to that woman who sells apple bread, we decided to stop for some grub before continuing our journey. Fortunately we were around the corner from Pauwela Café, a local favorite for windsurfers and my cousin.

Pauwela Café & Bakery 375 W. Kuiaha Rd., Haiku, 575-9242. Open 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. $ We walked inside and proceeded to the two display cases, where you can scope the day’s fresh pastries before placing your order. Then you have the option to grab one of the indoor booths or sit at one of the tables outside. Given how nice the weather was, we decided to sit in the Haiku sunshine. After sitting we passed around a piece of Pauwela’s tasty Banana Bread ($2). It was sweet and hearty and we were especially pleased to discover chocolate chips hidden inside. In no time, the waitress brought our coffee and OJ, both of which were fresh and delicious. Before we had a chance to make much of a dent in our

beverages, she returned again, this time with two plates of food. My cousin Chantal enjoyed a substantial Veggie Burrito stuffed with beans, rice and veggies and smothered in cheese and salsa ($8) while my other cousin Danielle filled up on scrambled eggs and home fries ($4). Both were pleased with their selections but said they would have preferred their food to be served a little hotter. While we mapped out our plans for the rest of the day, the waitress came back with our remaining two orders. In front of me she placed Da Ono Breakfast Sandwich, which was scrambled eggs, ham, melted cheese and tomato on a toasted bun ($4.50). Our friend Portia got the Breakfast Burrito ($6.50). My sandwich was great—the bun was toasted to perfection, the cheese melted just right and the eggs cooked the way I like them. While my sandwich was definitely enjoyable, we all walked out a little happier after having a bite of Portia’s breakfast burrito. It’s the perfect combination of breakfast and Mexican foods. The Béchamel sauce had a hint of garlic and when all the flavors mixed together, the whole experience was as close to the Perfect Breakfast that I’ve yet found. All in all, it was a great way to start us on our way to the Falls. If you’re not in the mood for breakfast or you get a later start to your day then we did, Pauwela Café also has a variety of salads ranging from the simple House Salad to more complex Greek, Caesar, and Da Cobb ($6-9). They also serve Da Kalua Turkey, Applewood BLT sandwiches and Haiku’s own Taro Burger ($8). MTW

Happy New Year! Sunday, January 1, 2006 [HOLIDAY] Whether you believe “The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year--It is that we should have a new soul” (G.K. Chesterton) or that “New Year’s eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights” (Hamilton Wright Mabie), one thing is for certain: WOOHOO LET’S PARTY! Let no champagne go uncorked, you know what I’m sayin’ people?! Have fun but be safe, y’all. Designated drivers are sexy. Waking up alive, in one piece, and not in jail is sexier. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Samantha Campos

DJs Mystre & Ikon

National Hangover Day

Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s

Sunday, 1 p.m. on Comedy Central

[DANCE MUSIC] DJ Mystre—or Eric Newman for you pedestrians—is notorious in San Francisco for being THE preeminent Trance Pioneer, since coming onto the scene in 1994. Naturally, he started his own trance record label and store, Frequency 8, merely widening the spectrum of where trance fits into the groove of dance music today. Well done, Mr. Mystre! Now Ikon—he’s another story entirely. I imagine Ikon was just a wee lass, playing Frisbee, making people laugh and breathing, when all of a sudden, his career path changed abruptly into the one-word moniker spin-monster he is today. But then, I’m only supposing, for who knows what dark events led to his ultimate state of beat-breaking...

[TELEVISION] When it comes time to gather with friends and family and celebrate the coming of a new calendar year, people will often break open a bottle or 12 of booze. It’s just how we do things in America. The result is usually a combination of good times, high spirits and an angry, bitter malaise the following morning, which is in fact the first day of that new glorious year everyone was toasting just a few hours before. Rather than try to work or mow the lawn, just stay home and nurse your hangover with Comedy Central’s three-movie marathon that constitutes “National Hangover Day.” I, for one, can think of few better ways to get rid of that throbbing headache than by watching the lovely Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, two bumbling women played by Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate do a road trip in The Sweetest Thing and talk show pope Jerry Springer play himself— and do a fine job at it—in Ringmaster. Load up on popcorn and aspirin and you’re all set. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

NYE: The Cafe Option Saturday, 8 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel in Wailuku [PARTY] It’s a Black & White themed shindig, featuring original folk music by Victoria Barrett with Rodney K. Special guest: master jazz and blues keyboardist, Gene Argel. Prizes in costume contest and trivia games. Photo booth provided by Creative Iris Studios. Free coffee and pastries at midnight. No cover. For more info, call 244-0952.

THURSDAY

NYE: The Ballroom Option Saturday, 8 p.m. at Kihei Community Center [PARTY] The Aloha Ballroom Dance Academy is hosting this elegant festive dress-up dance party featuring ballroom and Latin dancing. An adult, non-alcoholic event. Reservations required. Or $25 at the door. Tax-deductible donations accepted. Call 874-1807.

Curse of the Were-Rabbit Sunday, 2 p.m. at the MACC’s Castle Theater [CLAYMATION] Nick Park is a British animation artist who does amazing and remarkable pictures using clay, that ancient substance most thought relegated to Gumby and Davey and Goliath. His greatest achievement, Wallace & Gromit, deals with a bumbling technical genius named Wallace and his shrewd but silent dog Gromit. Producing three half-hour shows, and now the movie Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Park managed to merge Hitchcock suspense, wry humor and meticulous Rube Goldberg devices with Jerry Bruckheimer pacing. The result is a genuine white-knuckle thriller, made entirely of soft, colorful, molded clay. Stars Helena Bonham-Carter and Ralph Fiennes. Rated G/85 minutes. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

Local Youth Folk Night Tuesday, 7:30-10:30 p.m. at Café Marc Aurel [MUSIC] Leo Waia’u, Micah Teruya and Isabeau Waia’u are young, talented, self-taught singer-songwriters who happen to be friends on Maui, which is great ‘cause it eliminates the need for all that hair pulling and rumor-starting that seems to go on in the mainland tabloids. Not that we have any tabloids here, I’m just saying. Yeah, so these pals will be sharing their smooth, mellow, alloriginal music with that special island style. No cover.

FILM

The rental agency’s going to kill me. “In the CIA, as elsewhere in the federal government, you’re innocent until you’re investigated.” That line, from former CIA operative Robert Baer’s source material memoir See No Evil, sums up the ambiguous conduct of characters in writer/director Stephen Gaghan’s worldly movie about the corruption and greed underlying the geopolitical system’s myopic focus on oil. The title takes its name from a think-tank term for a reconfigured Middle East in the same way that Chinatown represented a kind of corrupt limbo. Gaghan zooms in and out of four intertwined stories with breathtaking precision toward a gutwrenching denouement. It’s an interactive political thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat attempting to gauge every opposing character’s clandestine motives and their kinship to real life Texas oilmen, Gulf emirs, Islamic terrorists and White

Syriana

Rated R/128 mins.

House wonks. Gaghan (screenwriting Oscar winner for Traffic) has climbed a steep learning curve since his miserable directorial debut in 2002 with his self-penned thriller Abandon. The young director has learned from his mistakes, and directs Syriana with a cinematic muscularity similar to William Friedkin’s movies of the 1970s. Gaghan’s frequently hand-held camera chews through global locations like Beirut, Geneva, Texas and D.C. with an economic style that never comments on terse decisions being made by the players in a grand scheming maze of intrigue. The thematic temperature of Syriana runs hot and doesn’t waste a single second

of film time. For all of the inevitable comparisons to Traffic, Syriana comes across with a more mature sense of restraint than Soderbergh utilized. Gaghan, the screenwriter, wins kudos for never talking down to the audience with explanatory exposition. Some critics have called Syriana a left-leaning movie, but as George Clooney has noted, it is rather an attack on a system that has been in place for 60 or 70 years with oil at the center of it. Gaghan makes no effort to glamorize any of the main characters any more than he displays their warts with unblinking resolve. Syriana hits the ground running with a moving-puzzle narrative structure that fitfully weaves its composite characters through scenes that simmer with subtext. Covert CIA op Bob Barnes (Clooney) sells two Stinger missiles to an Iranian in Tehran, while two oil companies are working out an unpleasant merger in Texas under the undesired scrutiny of one tight-lipped Washington, D.C. attorney, Bennett Holiday (Jeffrey Wright). One oil company is losing its Middle East drilling rights to a Chinese bidder, while the other has acquired access to Kazakhstan’s motherlode supply of crude oil. The Chinese takeover of the Gulf oil refinery puts a Pakistani father and son out of work. The son, Wasim Khan (Mazhar Munir), is soon radicalized after the physical abuse that he and his father receive at the hands of the local militia, and he joins the ranks of a radical Islamic cleric. Meanwhile, in Geneva, energy analyst Bryan Woodman (Matt Damon) negotiates business with a reform-minded Middle Eastern prince (Alexander Siddig) when he isn’t looking after his wife Julie (Amanda Peet) and their two young children. Bob Barnes (Clooney) is the fire in the belly of the movie. He finds himself betrayed on all sides. His reflexive and desperate response to his circumstances expresses a helpless ambiguity that all Americans are party to regardless of which side of the red and blue we choose. MTW

So I’m going to just keep my comments to myself. 94 min. (Heidi King) CHICKEN LITTLE - (G) - Animated, Comedy Chicken Little is trying to mend his reputation. He’s already made an ass out of himself by falsely telling the whole town that the sky was falling and now is just trying to lay low. Unfortunately, he discovers that the sky really is going to fall and he and his misfit friends must get the whole town out of harm’s way. 96 min. (GP) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) Action-Adventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide and seek.” Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch) THE FAMILY STONE - (PG13) - Comedy, Family - A Christmas flick chock full of movie stars. This one is garaunteed to make us all laugh, cry and walk out of the theatre holding hands. Maybe that’s taking it a step too far, but we’re definitely dealing with a predictable feel-good movie in the spirit of the holidays. 103 min. (HK) FUN WITH DICK AND JANE - (PG13) -

Comedy, Adventure - One day after being promoted, Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) realizes he’s in the heart of an Enron-like scandal. With no stable source of income, Dick and his wife Jane (Tea Leoni) are forced to sell off their beloved plasma TV. After a series of crappy jobs and no hope of a new flat screen, the couple embark on a full-blown crime spree. There’s a moral lesson in all this but watching the couple make asses out of themselves is much more entertaining. 90 min. (Ashley Fitch) HARRY POTTER & THE GOBLET OF FIRE - PG Fantasy - Harry finds himself selected as an underaged competitor in a dangerous multi-wizardary school competition. Once again he is the center of controversy. 165 min. (GP) ICE HARVEST - (R) - Comedy - A successful mob lawyer and his partner attempt to steal 2 million dollars from a Kansas City boss. As they try to get out of town during a major storm, they begin to draw attention with their questionable behavior. 100 min. (GP) JUST FRIENDS - (PG-13) - Comedy - Home for the holidays, Chris is determined to get the girl of his dreams, Jamie, to see him as a sex object and not just a good friend. Sexual frustration ensues. 109 min. (GP) KING KONG - (PG13) - Action-Adventure - In a massive jungle on Skull Island, creatures from prehistoric times have been protected and hidden for millions of years. A group of nosy filmmakers discover a giant gorilla so of course they have to go on a great-ape search. But their quests puts them up against not only Kong but his dinosaur enemies, too. Yippee for them, a beautiul woman catches his eye so they can subdue him and take him back to New York. Why?! You know he’s just going to reek havoc on the city! See, you should have just left him alone. Starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody. 187 min. (KLW) MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA - (PG13) - Drama - Based on the bestselling book by Arthur Golden about the journey of a peasant girl into becoming one of Japan’s most notorious geishas. As long as you don’t think too much about the implications of the actresses not being Japanese, the movie is entertaining in that Hollywood-epic kind of way. The cinematography and costumes are predictably gorgeous, and the villainess is deliciously wicked. 145 min. (Samantha Campos) PRIDE AND PREJUDICE - (PG) - Romance - From Jane Austen’s classic story of a boy and girl who pretend like they don’t like the other and meanwhile fall hopelessly in love. It goes to show that love conquers

all. 126 min. (GP) THE PRODUCERS - (PG13) - Comedy - The huge stars (Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane) who brought this classic back on Broadway are now gettin’ it to the silver screen. Basically, two dudes try to make money off the inverstors of their play by creating a flop. I was sold as soon as I found out Will Ferrell has a part. I love that man. Also stars Uma Thurman. 134 min. (HK) RENT - (PG-13) - Musical, Drama - Young actors struggle to cover the cost of living in New York City while dealing with the rest of life’s challenges. A modern version of the opera La Boheme. 145 min. (GP) THE RINGER - (PG-13) - Comedy - This has all the makings of the greatest film of the year—maybe even the decade. Johnny Knoxville plays some guy who decides to enter the Special Olympics by pretending to be stupider than he actually is. Gold! 100 min. (Anthony Pignataro) RUMOR HAS IT - (PG13) - Comedy - Kevin Costner plays a guy suave enough to seduce a beautiful woman (Jennifer Aniston) as well as her Mother...and Grandma?!? Ew. Emotional distress ensues. 97 min. (HK) SYRIANA - (R) - Thriller, Drama - In a tangled mess of lies, deception and amoral realities George Clooney plays a moralistic CIA agent whose realizing that he’s dedicated his life to a less-than-honest career, while Matt Damon plays an oil broker who seeks redemption in a partnership with an idealistic Gulf prince (Alexander Siddig) as he questions his own life decisions through the agony of a family tragedy. 123 min. (Tallia Monterroso) WALK THE LINE - (PG-13) - Drama - Joaquin Phoenix stars in this look at the rise of the rebellious music icon Johnny Cash. Reese Witherspoon plays June Carter, the love of his life. Think Ray, but country. 135 min. (AP) WOLF CREEK - (R) - Horror - Based on factual events, which are at the same time vague and intriguing. Three road trippers are having a blast in Australia...until something happens with their car and they decide to accept the help of a seemingly good citizen and perhaps seal their doom. Mwah hah hah ha! 99 min. (HK) YOURS, MINE AND OURS - (PG) - Comedy - A military man meets a hippy woman, they get married, then their combined 18 children must eithe radjust to a crowded lifestyle or break up the parents partnership. 100 min. ASTROMANA

MASON MCGRAW

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22-JANUARY 20) Stepping onto the dance floor, looking into the eyes of your partner, feel that raw energy spark the senses with passion and excitement! This year on the last eve of 2005, I see a new romance coming out of the woodwork. Are you ready? With the holidays now winding down a bit, you’ll find more time this week to relax and finally finish that book next to your bed. Going for an early walk to clear your mind is top priority.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21-FEBRUARY 19) Are you playing much music lately? It’s truly amazing how it can change the atmosphere and mood of a situation in a matter of seconds. I suggest using music as a tool in creating a most beneficial transformation. Turn on the radio—it’s as easy as that; your mood from sad to glad is possible to switch like the gears in your truck. What’s your favorite musical instrument?

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20-MARCH 20) Your psychic abilities are very strong right now, especially in your dreams. Have you been able to control them yet? Doing some research on this ability would be very good for you right now. Any challenges you feel regarding work and the lack of satisfaction you get from your job will surface heavily in your dreams. But the keys to unlocking that door are pulling at your subconscious and they’re not really hidden at all. You know the truth and what to do, maybe now is the time to do something about it. Don’t be afraid to open that door and stand up to your challenges.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) There are many directions we could take throughout our lives—some we choose to pursue and some we let go of. This week, Aries, go for a long walk on the beach, through the jungle or just around the neighborhood, and really think about who you are and your purpose here on the planet. Being a tool for goodness and finding satisfaction in simplicity are great starting points. Live with love as your guide to better understanding the bliss of nature and seeing the best side of people.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Drinking filtered water, papaya for breakfast, yoga on the beach—these are essentials that you must have time for. You want the best for your body, right? Your performance and dance of life will be much more magical with a strong focus on time management this week. Stay on top of it with a list and plan a way through your day with plenty of time spent on nutrients and exercise. Feel the roots of your Earth element plant you deep within the core of the planet, grow and blossom.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21) Flying through the air, feeling the wind around you, completely weightless, watching the moon rise through the trees… is it a dream, or is it reality? Some things that happen this week will be very dreamlike. For example, when you read this column, you will feel a very strong vision of a past life, if you believe you’ve ever had one. But if you are newer to this planet, don’t forget to bring your camera: New places to go, new dishes to cook, a New Year! If you don’t already have any plans for New Year’s Eve, why not have a party? Everyone’s in the mood for celebrating, so enjoy and make a wish for 2006.

CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 21)

We DO IT Because IT FEELS GOOD!

“I sit and watch, as tears go by.” (Rolling Stones) The sadness that can grab hold of you like a fish in a net is sometimes very hard to shake. Embrace your sadness and communicate these issues until you know in your heart that it’s time to focus on the good things in your life. If you still have this grief, hold a ceremony of respect and the net will slip away. Your grace and loving nature will shine through. The new moon on Friday will prove to be a nice new beginning, and a hot date is just right around the corner.

LEO (JULY 22-AUGUST 21) There are some Leos that are like kittens and there are some more like sneaky, selfish lions up to much mischief. When you say you’re going to do something for someone but you know in the back of your mind it’s probably not going to happen, let him or her know. Be honest. Seriously, Leo, the heat from your fire attracts quite a crowd and you might just find yourself the center of attention, big time. Are your abilities as strong as the dreams manifesting in the minds of your pursuers? This week, stand firm and show the others they have the power to do it all by themselves.

Monkey

VIRGO (AUGUST 22-SEPTEMBER 22) Time to dust out the cobwebs! There are a few things in your life right now that have been overlooked for quite some time. Once you take care of these “dusty corners” you will be able to move on in a much smoother and more constructive action. Your strength will be renewed and the love you carry with you will shine all the brighter.

Spankers

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23-OCTOBER 22) Holding your lover’s hand, going for a walk under the moonlight along the beach at Black Rock, waking up next to her/him in the tent camping in Hana… Maui is the perfect lover’s paradise. Libras are the only sign of the Zodiac that is depicted by a non-living symbol yet I’ve known them to be more alive than any other. This week, go the extra 20 miles and keep that love burning bright with a special gift for your lover or friend.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23-NOVEMBER 21) There are three descriptions that categorize the signs in the Zodiac: Cardinal, Mutable and Fixed. One of the strongest roots of conflict within yourself stems from your “fixed” element. The fixed signs tend to be a bit more controlling, stubborn and unable to accept change. Now, my dear Scorpio, how can we turn this around to be beneficial? It’s time to resurface your strengths within and start singing in the shower, communicating with a positive energy instead of no energy. I know you have the passion in your life to live from the heart.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22-DECEMBER 21) Happy New Year! Flowers, coffee or tea, breakfast in bed—start the year out right, Sag! Your sign is known for your strength in visions. What do you see for the future? Now is a good time to drop into a deep meditation, use that gift and open your mind. You will be fascinated with what comes in. Listen to these images and thoughts for new inspiration and answers. Who would have ever thought that you held the key in your mind this entire time? MASON123LOVE@YAHOO.COM

JANUARY Spent New Year’s Eve on the North Shore, when there was still a SandBar, a DJ to crush on and a reason to believe a grown woman should take mushrooms in the middle of a clearedout rainforest on the same evening she resolves to simplify her life. A move from Lahaina to Wailuku meant the Sly Mongoose got replaced with Idini’s, where I endured the infamous “tortilla face” incident and met the dive bar’s one and only epidemiological specialist. A study in Bar Pickup-ology revealed surprise turn-offs are compliments and honesty. Narrowly avoided group sex at Milagros, adopted Freddy Mercury the fish and Sasha and I decided against tongue piercings. FEBRUARY Sadly said goodbye to DJ/piercer/rebel rouser Miah. Took a whirlwind, three-day trip to San Francisco on the great non-gay T-shirt hunt. Asked bartenders on Maui what they knew about love on Maui, discovering that getting your potential partner drunk is key, as well as the use of handcuffs. Drank gin, attended the Jason Mraz/Makana show with Maui’s screechingest high-school girls. And maybe I went on a date. MARCH Had dancing girl parties and tequila shots with she-devils. Confessed to being a former espresso junkie while working as a barista in Northern California, had a birthday, did some Mind Erasers, went for a tattoo consultation, did my first radio show, crushed on Marty Dread, saw Margaret Cho, met a beautiful but wasted Gutter Rat, did some Jager shots and had the indelible words of Linda Goodman implanted forever in my head: “The Pisces writer may be tempted to lounge for years in bars, telling himself he’s gathering material, when he’s really just gathering moss and unpaid bills.” Temporarily lost my mojo and sought advice from guy friends, who said things like, “You don’t look dumb enough” and “Dating is like fishing… pull ‘em in the boat, hit ‘em over the head and take ‘em home.” APRIL Looked back at the movies that shaped my expectations of men, my first time as set assistant for a fashion shoot, followed by an unfortunate placement in the middle of an all-out, chairsflying brawl at the SandBar. On a hot date, jazz went to my head and lingered like a haunting refrain. BJ’s “Evil Warrior Hooker Prom Queen of the Damned” get-up for a Superheroes & Villains party got her knocked up. Also, a didactic on when to scream in bed. MAY Tried to unlock the secrets to connubial bliss, discovering that it has something to do with prenuptial agreements to take the trash out. Also divulged my previous life as a domestic house-girlfriend and marine bio student, as well as my reasons for moving here. Continued the saga with a hedonistic return to San Francisco, only to recruit The Trainer back to Maui. Got Sasha drunk. JUNE Let you in on my rock ‘n roll past as a kid hanging out in Beverly Hills and Las Vegas in the ‘80s. Sasha and I spent more time in Idini’s. Hated on San Diego, just in time for another Association of Alternative Newsweeklies convention—although TJ still rocked, as we downed taco after taco in the search for authentic Mexican wrestling masks and a velvet, blacklightfriendly Bob Marley for Kim. JULY Confessed my dork-obsession with books at Borders. Gave you an alphabetic rundown of my past two years’ hook-ups. AUGUST Spent one day working in a lingerie shop, then ranted on the ridiculousness of most “selfhelp” dating books. Finally expelled my nipple rings, attended a little-people KISS tribute concert, went on a romantic date in a hostess bar, hiked through a lava tube, and supposedly did something involving a chimp and a Zippo lighter. SEPTEMBER Attempted to defend the role of casual sex in the lives of single women everywhere, gave you the embarrassingly endless list of past jobs I’ve had, and explained the complex trappings of my relationship with the enigmatic Mr. X. OCTOBER Compiled a Harper’s Index-style breakdown of the Holoholo Girl column over the past two years, emptied intimate notes from my little blue book, gave a voyeuristic look into a typical bar conversation amongst friends and briefed the events leading up to my landing this Holo-gig. NOVEMBER Went on vacation to the Pacific Northwest, contemplated personals ads, and met a sailor at Polli’s. DECEMBER Told you 31 things about me maybe you wish you didn’t know, reported on a hot Paia art party, revealed early sexual curiosities and developments, pondered close friendship and the need for space, and wrapped it all up in a tight little by-the-month review. Just for you! Happy New Year! Samantha Campos cannot believe she’s told you all this crap about herself. MTW
