When writing and making comments calling out what you are gives the reader an idea of where you are coming from. If you really liked your Hawaiian culture, try going back to the way it really was, to the Kapu system, and see how free and fun your life will be. NEWSOFTHEWEIRD FAKE CRYING Dutch designer Eric Klarenbeek, 29, has developed jewelry consisting of tiny crystals or flowers that hang directly from the eye via micro-thin medical wire attached to either prescription or blank contact lenses and, in the light, give the appearance of tears streaming down the cheek. He expects to hit the market soon, according to an October report in London’s Daily Mail, at a price of the equivalent of around $325. Though the adornments appear to be painful or dangerous, Klarenbeek said users of his prototypes so far have been “amazed” at their comfort.

SOUNDS LIKE MARKET ST. WAILUKU Residents of an Austin, Texas, neighborhood undergoing a federally mandated sewer replacement noticed that, for several weeks starting in September, the work crews would spend the first three hours of their 12hour days digging a huge hole in the street, and the last three hours re-filling and paving over it (repeating the process each day). The 20-by-20-by20-foot hole in Monroe Street was too big to be covered with metal plates, and the city’s “policy” of minimal traffic disruption required repaving for nighttime use, at least doubling the cost of the work.

BLIND INJUSTICE An administrator of criminal-case appeals in Louisiana committed suicide in 2007, partly (according to his suicide note) because of guilt that, for 13 years, he had complied with a judge’s order to deny, sightunseen, all appeals filed by defendants who were acting without lawyers. (Under state law, only death row convicts get assistance for appeals; all others, even convicted murderers, either fend for

themselves or forfeit the appeal right, no matter how indigent.) According to the administrator (the extent of whose claims are still being investigated by the state Supreme Court), none of the supervisory judges involved in denying the 2,400 appeals ever read a single word in them.

FOR THE RECORD (1) In October, Travis Fessler of Florence, Ohio, broke the Guinness Book record by holding 11 Madagascar hissing cockroaches in his mouth for the mandatory 10 seconds. (2) Briton Sarah Burge, 49, broke the Guinness Book record for the most cosmetic surgery, having now spent a total of 539,500 pounds ($850,000) on more than 100 procedures, according to an October report in London’s Daily Mail.

WORST JUSTIFICATION EVER In November, after two years of controversy, the school board in Jacksonville, Fla., voted 5-2 to retain the designation of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School, which is named for a Confederate general who was also an early Ku Klux Klan leader. Advocates for change described Forrest as one of America’s biggest Civil War slave traders, but a local Confederacy historian said his research indicated that Forrest was “nice” to his slaves and that “(t)hey loved him.”

CREATIVE SUICIDE Initially, authorities ruled the March shooting death of Texas restaurant executive Thomas Hickman, 55, a kidnap-murder, since he had been shot in the back of the head and the body dumped in the New Mexico desert. Later, however, investigators found the murder weapon nearby, attached to balloons that had snagged on cactus, and in July concluded that Hickman had killed himself but rigged helium-filled balloons to carry the gun away as he lay dying (a plan that resembled a 2003 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation). Political will Neil Abercrombie is a representative in the truest sense

The reason for his visit to Maui was to address the kickoff of a coalition of church groups seeking to link their community efforts. The Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE) Maui met later that morning, with more than two dozen churches sending representatives to meet with nonprofit organizations and unions to seek common ground in addressing jobs, affordable housing and immigration issues.

Abercrombie’s interest in FACE Maui falls much along the lines of 23year old Barack Obama’s first community organizing amidst the churches and unions of Chicago. In fact, as a graduate student at the University of Hawaii (UH), Abercrombie knew Obama’s parents.

“Yes, I wanted to attend UH because it had the reputation for being culturally diverse and open,” Abercrombie said. “Much different than my East Coast roots [in Buffalo, New York].”

He spread butter on a well-toasted English muffin as he continued.

“Obama’s father was one of the first Africans to come to Manoa, and I knew his wife and young Barry, too.”

Police action A couple weeks ago, the Maui Police Department paid a visit to our offices. Given MTW’s reputation for ticking people off in a, shall we say, freewheeling fashion, this probably isn’t a huge surprise.

itting and conversing with U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie is more enlivening than a cup of good coffee. I was lucky enough to share both this past weekend, meeting Neil to talk story at a Hana Highway java joint.

Abercrombie was just elected to his tenth two-year term in Washington D.C., after stints in the state legislature and as a Honolulu City Council member. Though elected by Oahu voters, he is nonetheless well known on the neighbor islands. A table of three at the coffee shop, apparently old friends, greeted him warmly as he entered. A steady stream of customers came by to shake his hand and share their greetings as we sat and spoke.

Abercrombie has been mentioned as a potential candidate to replace Gov. Linda Lingle.

LC Watch Of course, since we’re giving you this information in LC Watch, you can guess the source of the visit.

He was elected by Oahu voters, but Abercrombie is well known on Maui.

“Years later when I saw him elected to the Senate, I knew he was special, and his campaign proved to be a phenomenon,” said Abercrombie. “The Obama campaign went beyond frustration and anger at our government and its leaders and looked for political solutions. The Obama phenomenon also means that you and I, we all must be participating.

There is recognition that politics does mean something. Once again, we hold the opportunity to bring the human dimension back into politics.” bercrombie’s own call to public service through politics traces back to 1970, when he ran for a U.S. Senate seat while still a UH grad student. He explained that his personal path was born out of the civil rights movement and the aloha spirit.

“Diversity defines us,” he said.

“Diversity of opinions, cultures, races and ideas. We need politics that realizes Hawaii as a unique laboratory and opportunity. The ideas of `ohana [family] and lokahi [unity] are not just abstract. The Hawaiians knew that there is no way to separate humans from nature. They are inextricably linked together. It makes you feel good to use a reusable shopping bag. Why? Because you are contributing to changing the very dynamic of things.”

“What is needed more than anything else,” he continued, leaning forward to make his point, “is leadership without an alternative agenda. Planetary interest dis-

cussions took place in the context of readiness to expend incredible amounts of money for war. There was a reluctance to spend money to preserve the planet.

Where are our priorities?

“We must understand the full flower of the thievery on the economic sector, and those who came in feeding like ravenous sharks. We gave hundreds of billions of dollars with no oversight to gangsters and con artists who got us into this mess.”

Abercrombie did not say if he was speaking directly about the federal bailout bill for Wall Street investment deals gone awry. He and fellow Hawaii Rep. Mazie Hirono both voted for the second version of that legislation, raising a few eyebrows. But an important consideration for both island legislators was the inclusion of renewable energy initiatives, added to sweeten the otherwise bitter pill of the financial bailout.

Abercrombie also favored an earlier congressional bill that would have allowed more offshore drilling, but did so because of other elements contained in the legislation and because he recognizes the

It was a professional call; Tommy’s aim was to speak with Director Frank Silva about complaints he’d been getting from advertisers (I was there to observe and report). Some of the small businesses that advertise in this very publication felt they were being cited by the LC for things—often very small, nitpicky things—that they said in their ads. They’re not the only ones getting hassled obviously, but there does seem to be a disturbing pattern. This is, sadly, nothing new.

So. We went down to ask Silva what was going on—was the LC deliberately targeting our advertisers? And if so, you know, cut it out. He wasn’t in, so we left a message, curt but far from over the line, and walked out.

Thirty minutes later, your tax dollars were hard at work paying Maui PD officers to stand outside our door and ponder, no doubt, what the hell they were doing there. (They left with no arrests made.)

Let’s be clear: it is not a crime to visit a public agency and leave a message, even an angry one, for its director.

That’s called civic involvement, and it’s every citizen’s right (some might say duty).

The problem is, we ask questions the LC doesn’t like. And I guess we got our answer.

“What’s manifest is the local response,” he said. “‘Think globally, act locally’ is a necessity. Energy independence for Hawaii is the single most important thing we can control. It takes political commitment and leadership.” bercrombie is among the many co-sponsors of House Resolution 6709, an ambitious bipartisan bill “to greatly enhance the nation’s path toward energy independence and environmental, energy, economic, and national security by amending Federal policy to increase the production of domestic energy sources…” The measure has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment.

Abercrombie is one of a handful of Hawaii’s political leaders whose names have been recently mentioned as potential candidates to replace Governor Linda Lingle when her term expires at the end of 2010. While it is well understood that Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona will campaign to keep Republican leadership in the Governor’s mansion, only in recent days have murmurings of possible Democratic candidates for the post been discussed.

Weekend stories in The Maui News and Honolulu Advertiser noted that Abercrombie, Senate President Colleen Hanabusa and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman have all indicated interest in the 2010 gubernatorial race. Former U.S. Rep. Ed Case is also considered a possible candidate.

Hanabusa may find a constituency still unhappy with how she led the charge to support a special legislative session a year ago to overturn a court ruling and pass Act 2, which allowed Hawaii Superferry to sail in advance of preparing an environmental impact statement. Hanneman found sufficient opposition to his plans to fund and build a rail transit project to help address Oahu’s daily traffic tieups. Both would be required to resign from their current office upon filing papers to run for governor.

Though he and I did not discuss the issue of his running for governor, it’s clear that his dedication to serving the people of Hawaii will continue to dictate his future political choices. “I think it’s very, very important,” Abercrombie told the Advertiser, “that we leverage the governor position with regard to

the congressional delegation and the fact that we have somebody who understands and is sympathetic to Hawaii in the White House. I think it’s an ideal opportunity.”

Al Gore’s recent New York Times oped outlined the momentous national leadership change and the great potential for making strides in addressing climate change while re-directing our economy toward renewable, domestic energy sources and technologies. His five-part plan highlighted solutions to re-power America and produce 100 percent of our electricity from carbon-free, non-combustive sources. The upshot of the commitment is not just greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions, but creating millions of jobs that cannot be outsourced. Elements of the plan include

providing large incentives for building concentrated solar and wind installations, creating a “smart grid” electric transmission system, helping the auto industry convert quickly to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency and leading the way in addressing the planet’s carbon emissions by going beyond the Kyoto Protocol with a more effective treaty that could come out of talks in Copenhagen next year.

“It is crystal clear, the time for energy independence is now,” said Abercrombie, who generates quite a bit of it on his own. He acknowledged that the recently signed Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative was primarily created without public scrutiny, crafted by Hawaiian Electric with help from the Governor’s

Office, the Consumer Advocate and the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

“If our public utility is supposed to be about serving the public good,” he asked, “then why do we have the highest electric rates in the nation?”

But, Abercrombie added, “we have to be very careful that we don’t get self-righteous. Jack Burns [Hawaii Governor from 1962-1974] once said, ‘Any damn fool can take a stand. The question is, what are you willing to do about it?’”

Rep. Neil Abercrombie’s track record of public service to Hawaii should be ample indication that he combines two essential qualities: the desire to meet the needs and dreams of Hawaii’s people and the political wherewithal to get things done. MTW

Yesterday was Veterans Day. My personal stance is generally antiwar, because I have found very few wars that weren’t mostly or completely about a small group of rich and powerful people trying to make themselves more rich and powerful on the backs of those who are neither rich nor powerful. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect the men and women who choose to serve. I don’t care if they signed up out of enduring love of country or a desire to get some money for college; they’ve got a tough, tough job. One person who’s made their job a lot tougher is our current Dear Leader, the subject of an AP story The Maui News ran on the front page of today’s edition titled “Wistful Bush salutes veterans.” In the piece, the lame duck-inchief says he’ll miss being in charge of “such a fabulous group.” Maybe it’s just me, but every time Dubya praises the troops, he comes off either as a condescending asshole or a pathetic wannabe who always dreamed of flying the big planes but didn’t have the cajones and so hid

The War on Drugs marches on: Seven Mauians were busted yesterday for marijuana cultivation and distribution in a sting dubbed (apparently unironically) “Operation Weedkiller.” Among those arrested was Brian Murphy of Paia, a vocal medical pot advocate and founder of the organization Patients Without Time. While the cops painted Murphy as a drug dealer hiding behind the smoke screen of medical marijuana, Rep. Joe Bertram, himself a medical user, came to Murphy’s defense.

Quoted in The Maui News, Bertram said Murphy’s arrest means many patients will now be “cut off from their source of medicine.” And Bertram took things a step further, saying that the bust shows police will continue to enforce unjust marijuana laws until we embrace outright decriminalization.

Even in a state like Hawaii where the voting public clearly leans pot friendly, that’s a bold stand for an elected official to take. Good on ya, Joe… In other news: A day after we published information about Wednesday’s Makena development hearing, the Planning Commission saw fit to quietly change the meeting time from 1:30pm to

We’re still two months away from Obama’s coronation, er, inauguration, and already the media is awash with stories about how Mooseburger has her scope trained on the big prize. Everyone bitched about how this election dragged on too long.

So the solution is…to start talking about the next one before the Obama girls even get their puppy? On a related side note: If Palin does decide to seek the presidency in 2012, it’ll lend some credibility to the apocalyptic predictions of those who study the Mayan calendar and believe that in four years a spaceship is going to link up with some crystal skulls on the moon and the world will explode (or something).

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17 Pick up just about any newspaper today and you’ll read a headline that says some variation of the following: “Iraq approves U.S. security pact.” The faulty assumption is that there is a united entity called “Iraq” about which accurate generalizations can be made. There are some in Iraq who want us to stick around; there are others who will continue to kill us until we leave. The point is, that country (if it even is a country in any real sense) is nowhere near cohesive enough to “approve” anything.

Bottom line: We broke it, we bought it. And we’re still buying it.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18 The vultures are circling: The Maui News reports that the FBI has launched an investigation into a group of scam artists who conned desperate homeowners out of hundreds of thousands of dollars by promising to help them avoid foreclosure. Many of the victims were Native Hawaiians who were duped into attending “seminars” for as much as $10,000 a pop. Man, just when I was starting to have a little twinkle of renewed faith in humanity… MTW

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s one thing to put up pink ribbons or offer a bit of good-sounding lip service, which many did, but the Hard Rock Cafe in Lahaina took the next step, raising over $12,000 for Maui cancer patients through a series of benefit events. Any time a company, even a big one that some may see as a sign of cultural homogenization, puts its money where its PR is, that’s worth a nod.

Belt tightening abounds: Mayor Tavares told county departments they’ll have to make due with less, ordering them to slash spending by 16 percent for the fiscal year, The Maui News reports. The move—which will surely lead to layoffs and shelve various public projects—will save an estimated $55 million at a time when Maui, and the state, is staring at a ballooning deficit and deflating revenue with little relief in sight.

File this under, “duh”: It’s official. The United States is in an economic recession, according to a survey conducted by the National Association for Business Economics. Of the 50 economists polled, 48 said the dreaded “r” word is an undeniable reality. The question: who were those other two, and under what gargantuan hunk of metamorphic matter have they been living?

Here’s an interesting thing: You’d think with hotel occupancy continuing to decline, room rates would follow in kind. Not so. Pacific Business News reports that even as occupancy on Maui fell to 58.3 percent--a 22 percent drop over the same time last year--room rates inched down a mere 1 percent, to an average of $222 a night. It seems like if rates were lowered a bit more, some of those empty rooms might have people in them, people who would order room service or go buy $14 cocktails at the swim-up bar.

“Out of the water, I am nothing.”

- Duke Kahanamoku s both a teacher and a surfer, I’ve witnessed many students looking and feeling the same way: tardy, wet and shivering from the morning’s dawn patrol, their thoughts rolling in and out like the tides, staring down clocks on the walls like they’re sets on the horizon and doodling empty point-breaks and hollow barrels that crash on their notebooks.

Surfing requires an incredible amount of knowledge, discipline and concentration. So it’s no surprise when I find the focus of surfers breaching the classroom walls and pouring back into the sea.

But could their drifting minds be moored if the principal gave warning: “Study and keep your grades up, or you won’t be surfing for us anymore”?

For far too long now, the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) has prevented such a statement from being made. Although most people around the world recognize Hawaii’s introduction of surfing as its greatest legacy, the DOE refuses to sanction surfing as an official sport, thereby ostracizing our young surfers when they should be revered as ambassadors of the sport of kings.

Kim Ball, owner of Hi Tech surf shop and coach of the Lahainaluna wrestling team, has been lobbying for over a decade in hopes of implementing surfing into the high school athletic scene. He understands the significance of surfing to the Hawaiian people, their ancient predecessors and especially to Hawaii’s students.

Ball’s perseverance is finally paying off. “This is a big year for us because we’ve jumped through enough of the DOE’s hoops to give us ‘club’ status,” he says. “We’re not yet sanctioned by the interscholastic athletic leagues, so surfing will still not be recognized as an official sport, but this is an important step in what has been a long road.”

or Ball, that road began in the 1980s, when he was coaching at Lahainaluna High School. “I knew we had kids on the team that wouldn’t be in school if they didn’t have wrestling in their lives,” he remembers.

“But also, I was seeing all these kids who had surfing as their thing, and it was just so clear to me that we had nothing for them.”

Ball approached an athletic director about starting a competitive high school surfing contingent. “Basically, he told me to forget about it,” says Ball. The DOE gave him the same response.

Several schools in the United States have discovered the benefits of interscholastic surfing. Dr. Bruce Gabrielson, founder of organized U.S. high school surfing and chairman of the National Surf Schools and Instructors Association, pioneered the first high school surf team in Huntington Beach, California in the early 70s. “As in all other high school sports, organized athletic competition encourages commitment and discipline, enhances leadership skills, plus helps develop teamwork skills and a personal code of honor,” says Gabrielson.

Gabrielson feels these skills are especially pronounced among surfers. “Surfing is unique compared to other sports in that it represents a culture, a lifestyle and both a team and individual sport,” he says. “It continues to exist outside the playing field, permeating throughout the participant’s environment and all aspects of their life. Unfortunately, it has now taken many years for educational institutions to fully recognize how much influence this particular sport has on developing important skills in our youth.”

Knowing the importance of these skills and the DOE’s failure to recognize them, Ball took matters into his own hands. In 1994, he began holding an annual underground high school surfing competition.

Students throughout the island would meet, form teams and represent their schools. Without support from the DOE, Ball created a non-profit, the Maui Sports Foundation, in order to help pay for liability costs and the county fees necessary to hold the event at Hookipa beach park. For the first eight years, the meets went undisturbed.

In 2002, Ball received a memo from Patricia Hamamoto, Superintendent of the DOE, that said no school names or logos should be used in the competitions for liability reasons.

Ball responded by renewing his calls for the DOE to legitimize competitive surfing. With supporters from both Maui and Oahu, Ball attended a Board of Education meeting, hoping to make a stink.

But the real stink came later that year in the form of a DOE report. Although they had heard hours of public testimony in support of high school surfing, from parents, teachers and professional watermen, administrators ultimately rejected the cause.

“Our two biggest concerns with surfing have always been cost and liability,” explains Dwight Toyama, Athletics Administrator for the state Department of Education and Executive Director of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.

The budget projections and liability issues contained in the 2002 report were shaky at best. The proposed budget itemized superfluous expenses such as: 24 surfboards for

44 schools at $400 each; 24 bars of wax at 50 cents each; and 100 T-shirts at $7.50 for each contest. Between equipment, coaching, transportation and lifeguard fees, the inflated budget for one year of high school surfing totaled over $2.6 million.

Archie Kaleppa, tow-in-surfing pioneer and head of ocean safety operations for Maui County, helped design and instruct the course. “This is not your typical Red Cross lifeguard course,” says Kaleppa. “We’ve taken 50 years of self-taught lifesaving knowledge from the state’s most advanced lifeguards and put it into a curriculum for these coaches. I’m confident that upon completing this course, the coaches have more respect for the ocean, for lifesaving and are fully prepared to be the coaches of their schools’ surf teams.”

Aside from the swim tests, class tests, cultural lessons, first aid and rescue scenarios, coaches must also prove their merit as surfers. (Could you imagine a high school football coach taking a tackle from the team’s star linebacker?) And also, since they’re only clubs, surf coaches are neither compensated for the $330 course nor paid for all the work during the season.

“Since surfing is in the ocean, you can’t control the environment as well as you can in other sports, so we had to take that into serious consideration,” explains Toyama. However, since surfing was neither a club nor a sanctioned sport, Walsh was never even a candidate for athlete of the year. And as long as surfing remains at the club level, members will not be eligible for such accolades. ut organized competition isn’t the only reason for surf clubs. “The whole point of this to me is not to groom some super competitive surfers that are going to rise to the top of professional surfing,” says Baldwin High surf coach Keoki Pfaeltzer. “The purpose is to preserve the cultural heritage of a sport that was born on these islands, and given as a gift to all the world.”

In the true Aloha spirit of surfing, Pfaeltzer is giving back; on the first two days of sign-ups, 57 students joined the surf club. And Pfaeltzer is planning on using his pack of surfers to participate in an upcoming beach cleanup at Paukukalo. “Back in the day, if you were going to act like it was your break, then you had better be the one taking care of it,” he says. “These are the things we need to teach today’s surfers. We need to preserve and protect these values for the future of surfing. There is so much more to this sport than just maneuvers and clothing labels.”

Ball understands that high school surfing has a lot more to go through if it ever does become an interscholastic sport. “I know we’re not officially sanctioned, but it’s still pretty cool to have these clubs. It’s going to be an exciting season,” says Ball. “You know there were times during all of this when I just really felt my back up against the wall. I remember this one particular BOE meeting on Oahu—we were completely shut down and afterwards, I just sat there shaking my head in disbelief. After the meeting, a woman on the board came up to me and whispered into my ear, ‘Don’t give up.’ I’m glad that I haven’t.”

By refusing to concede defeat, Ball is giving many surfers a legitimate reason not to give up on school, a chance to be something more, outside of the water.

Like a man caught inside the impact zone, with forceful resistance hindering each stroke of progress, beaten but unbowed, Ball has pushed beyond the breaks in his path.

Maui meets Mexico Lahaina’s new Mexican restaurant offers big portions, low prices. So shut up, Californians… here are a lot of people from California living on Maui, and I’ve heard a fair share of those Golden Staters complain that there isn’t any “real” Mexican food to be had here on the Valley Isle.

I grew up in a one-Mexicanrestaurant-town where the enchiladas tasted just like the burritos (which strangely resembled the fajitas), and I’ve also been to Mexico, where I was surprised and delighted by how little cheese comes on a taco.

The roommate and I investigated Los Pelones, the reincarnation of long-time Lahaina eatery Compadres, and found its take on Mexican food to be gringo-friend-

ly and family oriented with many nods to traditional big Baja flavors.

As expected, we were greeted with fresh, crunchy chips and mild salsa, quickly followed with the creamy house guacamole, also mild. A few dashes of hot sauce later and we were digging in guiltily, knowing that we were spoiling our appetite for dinner.

The festive appetizer platter arrived first, stacked with crunchy fried taquitos carnitas, a basic cheese quesadilla, mini chicken chimichangas and, my favorite, spicy little chili wings bathed in the perfect amount of Tabasco. We nibbled cautiously because between the guac and our starters it was becoming obvious that the portions at Pelones are grande, bordering on enormous.

When selecting an entrée I considered all the usual suspects, but going with a simple chicken burrito, fish taco or steak enchilada seemed like a shame when the menu included such diverse items as Mexican ribs, shrimp and scallops and fresh fish. I was particularly delighted to see six different chili relleno preparations, including one made with goat cheese.

In the end I went with my server’s recommendation and ordered the daily fresh fish platter. My mahi mahi and opakapaka came Veracruz style,

rubbed with Cajun spices and buried under a flavorful sauce of green bell peppers, onion and tomatoes. On the side was a mountain of Spanish rice, which got a small drizzling of hot sauce before I dug into it, and creamy black beans sprinkled with cojita cheese.

The roomie ordered the manana ribs, a half-rack or so of tender baby back pork ribs smeared with mango barbeque sauce and served with pintos and chipotle butter-smeared roasted corn.

We made a valiant effort but fell far short of cleaning our plates. Each meal was enough for two people, and the super-sized portions applied to the margaritas, too. Two strong, tall, refreshing cocktails later we were happily buzzing to the noise coming from the crowded bar.

Los Pelones is not only carrying on the Taco Tuesday tradition that made Compadres a weeknight hot spot for hungry locals, they’ve decided to host Taco Thursdays as well. Now those in search of a cheap bite and a margarita won’t have to wait seven whole days to get their hands on a crunchy, and surprisingly delicious, hard-shell taco for just a buck.

Down to Earth, Kahului Okay, so they’re not completely blue. In fact, they have more of a purple tinge to them. But I’m sure under certain types of lighting they look more or less blue. I just can’t bring myself to include plastic blue foods in this list—artificial color is a scary thing. Who am I to say that a food item should be chemically “enhanced” to the degree that it looks radioactive? Anyway, this is a tasty and ultra-nutritious side dish that has a smoky flavor. I might even venture to say it has poi-like undertones. This is definitely one of those things you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

This is what I should have picked up last Saturday, but I tend to be adventurous.

Again, not blue, but I refuse to give in to the Curacao cartel just yet. The label is blue and that’s good enough. This is one of my favorite beers (though admittedly it’s brewed by Coors). It’s inspired by Belgian wheat ales, with a goldenorange hue and a rich, subtly sweet and spicy flavor. I prefer it from a tap, but a bottle will do in a pinch. The key is to stick an orange slice on the rim and squeeze a drop or two of juice into your pint. Delightful.

This spot was slated for the blueberry bagel featured at a café near my office, but I’m a bit carbed out at the moment. Plus I avoid them for pretty much the same reason I avoid most food. Because of science.

But good music is incapable of adversely affecting one’s thighs.

Especially “Blue Condition,” a slow yet solid track on the phenomenal album Disreali Gears, sung by drummer Ginger Baker. Unlike nearly every other track on the album it lacks screaming Clapton solos. But its lyrics are pretty damned instructive: “You must be enterprising in your ways/or you will hear no laughter nor see the sun/life would be one disaster all the way through.” Well, that’s one way to ward off the blues. Iao Me Mine Top local musicians cover the Beatles in Wailuku ou can tell a lot about a person from their favorite Beatles album. Obviously it’s a tough choice that requires lengthy deliberation and changes over the course of one’s life. Unlike, say, the Beach Boys’ discography, which contains kindacheesy titles like All Summer Long and astonishing gems like Smile, every Beatles album has an array of elements that make it fantastic.

Beatles Night Friday, November 28, 6-10pm, Iao Theater, 68 N. Market St., Wailuku, $40, 242-6969 Still, I communicate differently with those who say it’s Beatles For Sale hands down than I do with people who tell me Revolver (which is my favorite).

One’s favorite Beatles song is a good indicator as well. I would be much more intrigued by someone

who most adores “The Fool on the Hill” than someone whose all-time fave is “All My Loving.” Mine is “Fixing A Hole” (I know—it’s not on Revolver).

The Beatles’ profound influence on music and culture in general lies partly in their fearless experimentation with sound (and a few other things). Consider “Norwegian Wood,” on which George Harrison implemented the sitar after having played one that was part of a set for the film Help!.

Yet the Beatles’ innovation is merely part of what made them so amazing.

Their music is at once universally accessible and painfully profound (surely a result of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting collaborations).

So what’s my point, then?

Well, most Beatles tunes translate well into interpretations by other musicians, which is why a Beatles cover show is a brilliant idea. Having a killer lineup that includes some of Maui’s best musicians— all of whom will be interpreting the Beatles tunes of their choice—is a sure bet for drawing a sizable crowd.

Given the diversity of Maui’s music scene, next Friday’s Beatles cover show, which takes place at the Iao Theater, will likely be an utterly dynamic evening.

Even if each act’s set includes “Blackbird,” there are hundreds of ways to pull it off in a unique manner.

It’ll be interesting to see which songs each artist chooses. Personally I’d like to see what Randall Rospond of the Haiku Hillbillys would do with “Eleanor Rigby.”

I also wouldn’t mind seeing rock and roller extraordinaire Erin Smith bust out a gut-punching “Helter Skelter.” That would be most bitchen.

Other acts in Friday’s lineup include: Anuhea, whose soulful approach is sure to do any Fab Four tune justice; Jerry Caires; Melissa M. from Mojomana; and a handful of others. Fulton Tashombe leads.

The evening’s non-Beatle-related perks include passed pupus courtesy of Hailiimaile General Store’s Bev Gannon, auctions and the like.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this night will not serve solely as a celebration of the most influential band in rock and roll history. The Beatles’ perpetual message—love tinged with the ideal of true progress—fits exceedingly well within the current post-election afterglow many of us are experiencing.

Whichever album is your favorite, let’s come together for this one. MTW

Unlike last year’s entertaining but uneven Meet the Robinsons, this one is funny, truly witty and genuinely thrilling. It’s no Finding Nemo, but it comes close to Pixar-level perfection.

The story is a canine version of The Truman Show: a talented German Shepherd (voiced by John Travolta) is unaware that his adventures with Penny, his owner (voiced by Miley Cyrus), in which he displays his many super powers, are all manipulated and part of a popular TV show. When Bolt believes that Penny has been kidnapped, he goes AWOL and sets out to find her, only to discover that his “super bark” doesn’t have much bite in the real world.

The animation is breathtaking and the characters are lovable and cleverly conceived. Travolta is endearing as the heroic Bolt and Cyrus is just-right as his human companion. But the film is stolen by Rhino the hamster (voiced by Mark Walton) and Mittens the cat (voiced by Susie Essman). While Walton and Essman

Somewhere Underdog is calling his attorney. don’t have the wattage of their co-stars, their hilarious and heartfelt work elevates the film, making all the scenes with Bolt, Rhino and Mittens inventively hilarious and something special. The vocal performances complement the innovations of the animators, who make every strand of fur vivid and real.

There are gentle swipes made at shallow Hollywood types, but the film is at its best when it’s in action, particularly the first scene, one of the most exciting sequences of the year; the opening and a set piece aboard a train raise the bar so

high, the relatively straightforward ending is a letdown.

Yet the emphasis is on friendship, not mayhem, and the scenes of Bolt traveling the country and learning from his companions what it means to be a dog (after living a hermetically sealed life) are what give the movie its requisite warmth. There are nice, timeless Disney lessons to be learned about embracing who you truly are and the importance of loyalty.

Children will savor it while adults will be impressed by how exciting and uproariously funny it is. MTW

Have you ever stood on the beach in South Maui and wondered about the status of the former Target Island? This Thursday’s PWF Making Waves lecture is an opportunity to find out. The story of Kahoolawe is probably the most obvious metaphor for the impact of colonization on a culture and environment that had, up until Western contact, flourished. The island is home to at least 3,000 cultural sites and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The arrival of the white man brought a penal colony to the island, goats (a misguided gift from Captain Vancouver to Chief Kahekili), cows (also not the most brilliant idea, given their impact on the island’s vegetation), and, finally, bombs. Some Maui residents could hear the explosions from their homes. A simulated atomic bomb blast at a spot called Sailor’s Hat broke the island’s water table in 1965. An unknown amount of unexploded ordnance remains on and around the island.

Control of Kahoolawe was transferred to the state in 2003, and there are now serious restoration efforts underway.

The Kahoolawe Island Research Commission will update the public on research efforts in the island’s marine environments this Thursday.

While no one would call the U.S. military understated, it is a bit jarring to discover that more than a fifth of the land in the Hawaiian archipelago is military-controlled. This is one of the many outrages that Hawaiian journalist and filmmaker Anne Keala Kelly includes in her documentary Noho Hewa. (Hewa being the word for “wrong” and noho meaning “to occupy.”) The film draws connections between various facets of U.S. society including military, politics, law and real estate and their detrimental impact on pretty much everything that what here pre-contact (see previous Pick). Regardless of your background, if you’re here you should probably consider his required viewing. Free.

Friday (Nov. 21), Makawao Town The holidays are a double-edged sword. You have the family/warmth/party aspect, which is pretty killer (my dad makes a mean cosmo). Then there’s the side of the season that reflects the nastier aspects of consumer culture: women getting in fist fights over pieces of plastic, a general overemphasis on material goods and mass consumption of corporate cookie-cutter crap. Fortunately Makawao Town is offering Maui wahine a more homegrown alternative: a girls’ night out. Small businesses in Makawao will be keeping their doors open later than usual so that wahine of all ages can browse, socialize and get a little early shopping done. This can help us all steer clear of giving loads of money to giant corporations this year while promoting small businesses (and thus the local economy).

Some musicians have an amazing ability to invoke various types of scenery by way of their compositions. A few bars of slack key guitar can conjure a pleasant scene indeed for one who is sitting in an air-conditioned office desperately awaiting Friday. Fiddle and mandolin, of course, are virtually inseparable from rolling green hills. Keith Greeninger, who plays this Friday at Mandala Ethnic Arts, seems to have the art of capturing the profound beauty and emptiness of the American West in song down pat. Although in part his sound seems to betray the influence of Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits (especially his vocals), Greeninger incorporates spaghetti-western style guitar leads, harmonica, dobro, clarinet, mandolin and other instruments to create a sound that screams of a high red desert dotted with a Rocky Raccoon saloon or two. Greeninger got his start in the ‘90s with the three-piece band City Folk, and went on to be a national folk/Americana act, playing at such venues as the Telluride Folk Festival and Canada’s Gathering at Island Lake, where he shared the stage with Blackfoot and Cree storytellers. Greeninger is said to be quite captivating live.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of inspiration he’ll draw from Maui’s astonishing scenery. $12.

More than anything, Hoobastank reminds me of college. Their hits ceaselessly blasted from the car speakers of my peers as I traversed campus. Their recordings spun at parties so frequently that I will forever associate Hoobastank with bong smoke and beer pong. For years they’ve been a component of the MTV set, and, judging by their adorableness, probably have more crazy groupie stories than Frank Zappa and the Mothers & Led Zeppelin combined (ah, but do they approach the creativity of the mud shark incident?). They’ve churned out a few chart toppers and seem to have a knack for writing and structuring songs that possess a naturally widespread appeal. If you’ll recall, they were the ones who hit #1 in 2003 with “The Reason.” Their sound varies from sensitive dude ballads to some pretty dark and aggressive rockers. It’s rare that a band of such stature plays on Maui, and I expect this one will have Hard Rock pretty packed on Saturday. Their Lahaina stop coincides with the release of their latest record, For(N)ever (pronounced “forever”).

Fishing is not everyone’s thing. For some people, it’s the most relaxing and enjoyable way to spend a day, and can result in a nice meal, to boot. For others, it’s incredibly boring, smelly, and unpleasant. The people who hate fishing can really ruin it for the people who love it, when they’re dragged along. This is just one of those things. It’s a great intention to want to share your passions with other people, but recognize that not all of them are going to be in a position to appreciate them. Perhaps be more selective about whose world you try to expand, and choose the one who is most likely to enjoy it.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’d think you’d have no trouble being patient, considering how much you dragged your feet getting the current chapter of your life under way. But now that things have gotten going, you couldn’t be in more of a rush. People might be taken aback by your sudden hurry, and drag their feet just as much as you did, before, when they were the ones lighting fires under your ass. Don’t get pissed off and help manifest a vicious cycle. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do but sit around and wait. This, unfortunately, is one of those times. Take a breath and get on with it.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) When I was in Germany, I discovered that the kids there had never learned the German equivalent of Roy G. Biv. Asked to put colors in the order of the rainbow, they’d produce a random mishmash of hues.

It was as if they’d never even seen a rainbow, or looked at one closely enough to notice the way the spectrum worked. Similarly, something that is incredibly obvious to you, and which you take for granted that everyone can see, is actually more or less invisible to others. It’d be easy for them to learn it, though— if someone would just take the time to show them. Need I be more obvious about who that should be?

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) While there’s no accurate way to predict where you’ll be in ten years, or even ten months, that doesn’t mean you ought to just throw up your hands and quit planning ahead. While it’s true that we often end up in a totally different place than the one we were aiming for, it’s only by heading in a certain direction that we get anywhere at all. I’m pretty sure you’d rather end up pretty much anywhere than stay exactly here; all I can suggest is that you quit tripping yourself up, simply choose the most promising prospect, and get moving.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) As any group grows, be it a company, a family, or an art collective, micromanagement becomes progressively less feasible. Procedures become standardized, rules more rigid, and interactions less personal. Some groups deliberately stay small so they can avoid this; others eventually either embrace this process or degenerate into inefficiency and ineffectiveness. In virtually anything you’re involved with, you prefer a casual, family-feeling. This can lead to frustration when it’s just not there. Luckily, it’s an option you could exercise this week. Despite the drawbacks inherent in the friendly, familial opportunity, I still think you’ll be happier there. Don’t you?

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re starting to feel like a toy poodle at the circus, forced to jump through an endless series of flaming hoops by a sadistic clown, for a treat you’re beginning to doubt you’ll ever get. You’re not even sure you want the damn reward anymore, except that you’ve already leapt through so many fiery circles, to quit now would be to admit defeat. Having come so far, it may be galling to just turn around and walk away; nevertheless that is what I’d urge you to do. Your worst suspicions are correct; the bait being used to draw you forward is one you’ll never get closer to than you are right now. I say cut your losses and leave right away. Head somewhere you can let your singed fur grow back in peace.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) The risk you’re taking is something akin to purchasing an outfit you can’t really afford, and wearing it to a party with plans to return it for a refund the following day. Chances are very high that something might happen to make that impossible. Do you really want to imperil your subterfuge (and your budget) with the likelihood of a stain or tear it might be hard to avoid? Given the relative lameness of the pay-off (essentially looking good for a few hours at a party), I don’t think it’s really worth the gamble you’re taking. What’s the point? You have clothes that are just fine, already sitting in your closet. Don’t mess things up. This week, just play it safe.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Hopefully by now you’ve experienced enough dark moments in your life to know that they are always followed by at least some joy and brightness. This one is no exception. It might feel dark and endless; but they often do, when you’re in the middle of them. Like every tunnel you’ve been through so far, this one has a light at the end of it. I can’t tell you how far off that is, only that it’s there and you’re headed toward it. Keep the faith, and keep on trucking. You’ll get through this, just like you always have.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Every Virgo has to, at some point in his or her life, develop a high degree of independence, for the simple reason that no one can really keep up with you. Certain people might be able to keep pace for short stretches, but no one else has your intensity or energy over the long haul. Thus you get used to doing things alone, and don’t get lonely often. That’s not to say you never do, though; this week is one of those times when you might feel the path you’re on is more solitary more frequently than you’d prefer. Luckily, there are people who’d be willing to join you for at least short stretches, if you’ll have them; all you need to is extend the invitation.

That’s not to say you never spend time alone or do anything by yourself.
