How did you first find out you had this wonderful gift?

It’s strange, because it happened comparatively late in life. I was a teenager when I first started reading people’s minds. Maybe it had something to do with hormonal changes caused by my entering puberty, I don’t know.

Says you. I saw you across the bar, standing there in a slinky, black cocktail dress with a neckline plunging nearly to your navel, and walked up to you. And what did you say to me?

I said, “Save your breath, I know exactly what you’re going to say.” And then you said, “Really?

What am I going to say?” And that’s when I said, “You’re going to ask if you can buy me a drink.”

And I was! I so was going to ask if I could buy you a drink. By the way, thanks for wearing that dress again to the interview. But what really amazed me is that later in the evening you read my mind again.

Oh, you mean when I told you, “Stop, I know exactly what you want. You’re just trying to get me liquored up so I’ll go home and have sex with you.”

Yes! I was floored when you said that.

You nailed me, right there. I had no idea what to say—here was this woman I’d just met, and you could read my mind. How did you know?

Fascinating. Now normally I don’t believe in psychic powers or anything, but the other night when we first met you totally read my mind.

What can I say—I have a gift.

It was nothing.

You didn’t waste any time deleting very important work files from my computer and gracing the set-up with your name. You must’ve taken advantage of the brutal riot that took place in front of my house, initiated by people I had never seen in my life before. It must have felt good to get such a unique opportunity and walk out with my stuff while I was busy calling the police and picking up the pieces of my trashed home. Luckily for me you are known as a thief and I will catch you with the cooperation of your very helpful (and devastated) parents. The Mayor and his cards In the spring of 1999, Joe Fedele chopped up and moved the old Pioneer Mill plantation manager’s house that sat on his Front Street property and got into a heap of trouble. Though not actually an historic structure, a state preservation architect told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin at the time that her office wanted the building saved.

The Mill filed suit against Fedele, demanding he restore the structure.

Fedele’s attorney responded that it was within his rights as a property owner to do what he wanted with the house. Facing

incessant but small fines from the county, Fedele simply knocked the house down.

Fedele must have made nice to someone at the county, because on Oct. 24, 2005 he hosted Mayor Alan Arakawa’s talk story meeting. About two dozen people showed at the gathering, organized by The Bakery owner Harold Hardcastle, a friend of both Fedele and Arakawa, who also brought trays of pastries for the attendees.

“I suggested [Arakawa] come by for an informal talk story on the Westside,” Hardcastle said. “Just talk, shake hands…”

white residents and fixtures of the Lahaina community. The average age hovered around 50, though at least one tourist showed up.

“Everywhere I go I like to get a feel for the local politics,” said John Lundin, who sits on the Democratic Party Executive Committee in Broward County, Florida.

Standing on Fedele’s patio as the 6 p.m. session was getting started, Arakawa, Lundin and I chatted about the historic ties between the Hawai’i Democratic Party and land developers. Our talk was the interrupted, first by a Hawaiian prayer and welcome and then by a sudden, steady rain. Moving indoors, Arakawa took up station at the end of a long, beautiful dinner table made of a black marble slab held up by green glass posts.

Everyone crowded around, some sitting on the floor, forcing me back into Fedele’s massive kitchen. For much of the evening I stood next to a large Egyptian sculpture of a dog’s head perched atop an espresso machine.

It being a Westside crowd, people asked about the usual Westside issues—bypass roads, a new high school, homeless people (“I have two teenage daughters and it scares the crap out of me,” one guy said). But mostly, people wanted to know when they were getting a West Maui hospital.

“The population here will not support a full facility,” Arakawa said. “It would go bankrupt.”

“Let it go bankrupt!” said local realtor Bart Mulvihill, who explained that he nearly died because he couldn’t get to Maui Memorial fast enough.

“Every person who doesn’t make it to the hospital should sue the state,” Arakawa resonded.

“But that means people are going to have to die,” said Mulvihill. “Or go broke.”

“I know what you want me to say,” Arakawa eventually said. “But I’d be lying if I said I’d petition the state to build a hospital in West Maui.”

Unrolling a set of digital planning maps, Arakawa spoke throughout the meeting like a slightly progressive technocrat: “Right now most of our engineers spend their time working on permits. We should have clerks working on permits.

“If I had my way, I’d take a hacksaw and cut down those traffic lights [at Launiupoko].

“When we came in, all our timesheets were done by hand.

“We’re no longer accepting gulches [from developers] for park credits. We don’t want scraps.”

Quiet for much of the two-hour gathering, Fedele spoke near the end, asking Arakawa why his friend next door—who bought the 16,000-square foot lot Fedele created when he took out the old plantation manager’s house— was encountering so much resistance at the

county planning department.

Hearing that, Mulvihill leaned to my ear.

“We need a [Special Management Area] permit to convert our laundry room to a bathroom,” he told me.

Arakawa responded to Fedele by talking about his own problems trying to get rid of two “flea-trap” houses owned by the county.

Fedele then mentioned his old problem with the old plantation manager’s house.

“Don’t tell me what you did!” Arakawa pleaded to great laughter.

Knocking down that house “was the smartest thing I ever did,” Fedele insisted. MTW

Bush, who since 2001 has moved billions of taxpayer dollars to religious organizations, are actually on the verge of solving the most ancient question of all: which is the one, true religion? It stands to reason that of all the “faithbased” groups competing for taxpayer dollars, the one that really has God backing it up will inevitably beat out the rest. Would God really allow his (her?) religion to come up short at the public trough? I think not.

MAUICOUNTY There was a time when I secretly wished I went to one of those super-expensive Ivy League schools. Every time I turned on the TV and saw some guy get elected to the U.S. Senate or appointed to the Supreme Court and the reporters inevitably said the person played on the Yale baseball team or rowed crew at Princeton, I’d cringe. Here I was, a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara, and I never once heard my alma mater mentioned in any big time resume. Now to be honest, UCSB does have a reputation as a party school and that might contribute to its lack of mention in the national press. But today all that changed, and I can proudly tell people that I graduated from UCSB. Right now, as I write these words, representatives from Playboy are busy combing the campus for hot female students to photograph for its upcoming “Girls of the Top 10 Party Schools” issue. According to today’s Associated Press dispatch, more than 100 students were expected to audition by the end of today. Students and faculty reacted to Playboy’s arrival with your typical protests about the school being a place of higher learning. “We’re not saying that just because a school is a party school doesn’t mean it’s not also a great place to get an education,” was how Playboy spokeswoman Theresa Hennessey responded in the AP story. And it is a great place to get educated: UCSB is where I first learned geopolitics, neoconservative theory and the phrase “10-keg party.”

Then a while later after some more speeches Arakawa announced that we—and by “we,” I mean “Tommy Russo, my boss”—is Maui’s Young Business Person of the Year. You read that right, folks: Maui Time Weekly Publisher Tommy Russo is the Young Business Person of the Year. Or put another way, the Young Business Person of the Year is Maui Time Weekly Publisher Tommy Russo. You know, I work for Tommy Russo, and if there’s one thing I can say about him with complete honesty and candor, it’s that he’s young. He’s just 32 years old (not 33, as listed in the awards brochure and today’s Maui News story). In fact, he’s younger than me. Not a whole lot younger, but he is, you know… younger.

Just to make sure I’m on the same page as the White House, are we getting ready to invade Syria? I’m just asking because Dubya’s talking up how terrible they are at a time when we’re bombing and strafing suspected insurgents on the Iraq-Syria border and even, on occasion, sending Special Forces teams into Syria on “manhunts.” It would be nice if we could keep it to one bloody invasion/occupation at a time, but you know how it is—you go to war with the warmonger you have, not the one you want.

The State of Hawai’i has already given over use of Kahului Harbor to the Superferry, and now finally the Superferry has decided that it’s time to make public what it intends to do with it. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, Superferry, Inc. will charge $50 for a one-way ticket between Oahu and Maui, $55 for a passenger vehicle and $90 for a van, truck or limo.

They expect to turn over $2.3 million to the state each year, starting in 2007 when service is supposed to begin. But what’s most fascinating in the Advertiser story is this single line: “Ultimately, the state could force a Superferry vessel to vacate its dock if it is running significantly behind schedule, one of the problems that doomed Hawai’i’s previous ferry service, SeaFlite, which operated in the Islands from 1975 to 1978.”

SeaFlite! I’d totally forgotten that all this inter-island ferry stuff had been tried before, and it completely failed. Some blame the high-tech (for 1975) hydrofoils used by SeaFlite, saying they couldn’t keep up with Hawai’i’s corrosive environment, but most people say the ferries were doomed when their parent company went belly-up.

Last week in “Less than Complete Victory: An open letter to Congressman Ed Case,” I erroneously reported that the 2000 th American soldier would die in Iraq sometime in November. My powers of mathematical prediction apparently leave much to be desired—today, the Pentagon announced that U. S. Army Staff Sergeant George T. Alexander of Killeen, Texas achieved that bloody distinction when he died of wounds he suffered Oct. 17 when his vehicle was blown apart by an insurgent’s bomb in Samarra, Iraq. He was 34 years old.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association apologized to football player Bobby Martin of Colonel White High in Dayton after the referees barred him from a September game because he was not wearing the required shoes and kneepads.

Martin was born without legs and plays on the punt return team, moving quickly around the field with his arms. An OHSAA official said the referees were just being overly cautious, but Martin said, “That’s the first time in 17 years” that someone had made him feel disabled. At halftime, Martin briefly considered tying some shoes around his chest and attempting again to play.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE Inmate Scott Bolton filed a lawsuit in September against the Luzerne County, Pa., prison and a slew of corrections officials, blaming them for the severe injuries he suffered in a 2003 alleged escape attempt, claiming that tighter security would have foiled his breakout. Bolton suffered spinal cord injuries (which have permanently confined him to a wheelchair) when fellow inmate-conspirator Hugo Selenski pushed Bolton out of a window, several floors up, apparently to speed their leaping exit. Asked a corrections commissioner, incredulously, “[An inmate] is dumb enough to act as a human mattress for Hugo, and [we’re] responsible?”

LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER At the Weavers School in Wellingborough, England, teachers were told in August to tolerate 15- and 16-year-old students’ cussing, even the “f word,” at least up to five times per class. According to London’s Daily Mail, the teachers were to merely keep a count of the words on the board, which the school believes shows tolerance for occasional bad language, but which more cynical teachers and parents believe will encourage the students to max out usage in each class.

And Elaine Walker became the latest parent to decide to relocate without letting her child know about it. She moved out of their home in Redmire, England, in July, leaving the equivalent of about $40 to her 15year-old daughter, along with a note announcing that she and an older daughter had moved to Turkey (where she had recently met a man).

SIGNS OF THE TIMES Ismael Velasquez, 47, was convicted of drug possession in Round Rock, Texas, in September because he failed at flushing his baggie of cocaine down the toilet of a Shell station; police attributed their evidence-recovery success to the station’s new, low-flow toilet, which caused the baggie just to swirl around. And among the latest citizens to (as per the First Amendment) “peaceably assemble” and “petition government for a redress of grievances” were “hundreds” of sex offenders who gathered in September in Palm Bay, Fla., to protest the town’s severe restrictions on where they can live and travel.

FETISHES ON PARADE Toru Nagasawa, 29, a construction worker in Kawasaki, Japan, was arrested in July after allegedly forcing a man to give up his contact lenses; at his home, police later recovered 124 pairs of eyeglasses and 30 pairs of contacts, stored in plastic bags. And Stephen Schroeder, 60, was arrested in Wilmington, N.C., in August, as the man who has been stealing teenage boys’ clothes for 25 years, with an inventory of 137 pairs of shoes and enough other items to fill a van and a truck. According to police, Schroeder said he had a need to “hold” and “possess” the clothes.

Hungry Howie’s Pizza deliveryman Thomas Stefanelli, 37, was shot in the leg during a June robbery in Tampa, Fla., as he made his rounds, but he fought the robbers off and, not really aware that the pain in his leg was from a gunshot, dutifully delivered his other four pizzas before returning to the store and examining his wound. And in London, in July, an unnamed teenager was rescued from a con-

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Kim Bedwell, 52, and Gladys Bedwell, 50, were arrested for alleged marijuana manufacturing in Clarkston, Wash., in September, discovered when police happened to chase a black bear through their neighborhood and into the Bedwells’ back yard. Apparently, frightened that the commotion was a drug raid, Kim tried to toss a marijuana plant over a high fence, but it landed on one of the officers.

HUMAN RIGHTS IN ACTION The Sri Lankan Daily News reported in September that the government’s cabinet has decided to lower the age of consent for sex from 16 to 13 because, according to Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, too many men were being arrested under the old law. Also in September, Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered the government to ban the traditional practice of confining women to cow sheds during their menstrual periods.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS A 49-year-old woman and her 30-year-old daughter were accidentally run over and killed in August in Indianapolis as they scuffled with each other just after midnight and rolled into the street, in front of an oncoming car. And a 38-year-old man whose family owns the Catacombs Extreme Scream Halloween attraction in Kansas City, Mo., was killed while working on the exhibit when the horror house’s elevator malfunctioned. When Sirivamo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka became the world’s first female Premier Minister in 1960, political prognosticators said that the United States, as the most important democracy, would soon follow suit by electing a woman president. Similar predictions followed Isabel Perón’s ascension to the presidency of Argentina in 1974, yet both major American political parties continued to nominate males, and WASP males at that, to run for president.

Meanwhile women took power in such supposedly backwards countries as the Philippines, Bangladesh and Mozambique. Forty-three white males have led the United States over the course of 216 years and 85 years have passed since women’s suffrage, and all but one of these white males were white AngloSaxon Protestants.

As we assert the right to overthrow foreign governments for denying equal rights to women (Afghanistan) and to religious and ethnic groups (Iraq), the widening gender-religion-race gap between our increasingly diverse population and our resolutely WASP male presidents has devolved from hypocritical to downright embarrassing. The U.S. political system looks more like apartheid-era South Africa. White men over 50 years of age account for a small-and-ever-shrinking proportion of the population yet occupy almost every seat in Congress, the Supreme Court and the 50 state legislatures. No wonder nearly 40 percent of Americans believe that the country isn’t “ready” for a woman (much less a nonwhite) president.

Ready or not, here comes Hillary.

Three years is an eternity in politics, but soaring campaign costs have created an all but insurmountable barrier to late entries by dark horse candidates that make early predictions easier. The early fundraising leaders will probably get their party’s nominations, which leads to an exciting possibility: America may elect its first woman president.

Machiavellian strategist Dick Morris’ new book promotes a Condi vs. Hillary race, but the GOP, beholden to its racist base, is many years away from running a black woman for president. Hillary Rodham Clinton, benefiting from high name recognition, a PR campaign to promote her “newfound moderation” with swing voters and a dearth of high-profile challengers, is as close to a shoo-in for the Democratic nomination as you can get. But it looks like she’ll face a formidable adversary in the general election—Arizona Senator John McCain. A Zogby poll con-

Isn’t it about time for a woman president? ducted in June has the charismatic McCain beating Clinton 54 to 35 percent, a staggering lead to overcome. Both candidates are already well known, so the typical process of educating an apathetic electorate as the race draws nearer is less of a factor in comparing their popularity.

No matter who wins in 2008, we’ll be better off than we are now.

Unfortunately, McCain’s soft-spoken charm and reputation as an honest “maverick,” belied by his right-wing voting record and his sucking up to Bush, could easily attract centrist voters turned off by Clinton’s frosty demeanor. Democratic “base” voters aren’t crazy about her either. Liberals like the idea of a woman president, but prefer one who worked her way to the top all by herself.

Clinton doesn’t qualify. Easterners still chafe at Clinton’s “carpetbagging,” running for the senate from New York despite not having lived there. Moreover, she voted the wrong way on the defining issue of the new century and, if she keeps it up, may end up as the last politician to admit supporting the Iraq war.

So why not vote for John “Plain Talk Express” McCain? If for no other reason than to send a message to the world, it’s important for Americans to support Clinton’s bid.

A country that claims to value its women as equals ought to have a woman president now and then—roughly half the time, as a matter of

fact. The fact that we have never elected a woman president conveys to every American schoolgirl that she is doomed to second-class status; that she will never be able to go as far in life as a boy no matter how hard she works.

A woman president won’t necessarily close the gender wage gap, solve the daycare crisis or smash the glass ceiling—but electing one might spark those discussions.

Despite her shortcomings of both politics and personality, Hillary Clinton is smart, well educated, politically experienced and articulate enough to be president. We are unlikely to see another woman with her qualifications score a presidential nomination for years to come; voters should seize this chance to make history.

There are plenty of solid reasons to vote for Clinton over McCain: Which candidate would be more likely to let Bush’s reprehensible tax giveaways to the ultrarich expire?

Withdraw troops from Iraq?

Close Gitmo? Address the healthcare crisis?

The high point of the Oct. 6, 2005 Liquor Control Adjudication Board hearing wasn’t actually the end, when Wailuku’s Club Starlite got fined $3,000 for letting the manager drink and fall asleep in her own establishment, but rather the point about halfway through when everyone started talking about Miranda Rights.

When the LC investigates possible liquor law violations, they never inform witnesses of their right to keep silent. These aren’t criminal cases, they reason, so there’s never a need to invoke Miranda.

“It’s an interview, not an interrogation,” Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Angela Hedge said during the hearing. “These individuals are free to decline to speak.”

But do they know that? As Adjudication Board member Lance Collins pointed out during the Oct. 6 hearing, it’s very easy for employees to view such “interviews” as “coercive situations”—times when they feel they must speak with LC investigators or risk trouble from their employers.

In addition, anyone found to have served alcohol to a minor faces criminal prosecution. That wasn’t the case with Club Starlite, but minor decoy sting operations are a big deal to the Maui LC. There’s at least the potentiality that statements made to LC investigators in such criminal cases could be admissible in court, though Hedge denied so at the hearing.

Club Starlite attorney Lawrence Ing also pointed out that LC investigators are part of law enforcement.

Some, like LC investigator Pedro Gapero, whose testimony constituted the only evidence Hedge brought against Club Starlite, are former police officers.

In any case, “constitutional issues” weren’t something Board Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama wanted to get into.

“Let’s not get tied up with technicalities,” he said. And that was the end of that.

It was hard, hard work putting this list together. I don’t think we need to tell you about the countless hours we spent tasting, nay, gorging ourselves on puffed pastries, custard Danishes, sugared cheese rolls and sweet lima bean-filled turnovers.

We had to endure myriad dilemmas, too. Do we get the mango-raspberry scone or the pumpkin chocolate-chip muffin with the spinach and feta croissant? How does the haupia cream filling in that malasada compare with the guava cream in that chiffon cake?

If we get a dozen stick doughnuts in Makawao for our office in Lahaina, will they survive the drive there without us eating them all, section by glorious section?

We’ve developed a few new routines, cravings and addictions, and have also taken to wearing drawstring pants, peasant blouses and muumuus.

Subsequently, we’ve had to join a gym and nag each other incessantly about working out, which we do not do with nearly as much gusto as we did the gorging. And we’ve had some serious explaining to do at the dentist’s office, but that’s another story.

Anyway, the result of all this toil and trouble is a spectacular guide to Maui’s bakeries, listed below in no particular order. Because baked goods aren’t about the two apple pies you can get for a dollar at McDonald’s. They’re about local folks creating fresh, high quality products, filled with aloha. And custard.

Cakewalk Paia Bakery Antique display furniture adorn this quaint Paia bakery. The cinnamon rolls are made with croissant dough, especially flaky and dusted with granulated sugar and cinnamon. Then these morph into cinnamon bun bread pudding, a very rich and delicious treat. This bakery has the biggest selection of muffins I’ve seen, from chocolate chip to orange glazed. The one thing I always have to get is the rice crispy treats. They are giant slabs of crisped rice surrounded in butter and marshmallow with a layer of mini chocolate chips inside. Epic.

This might explain why you need to get here first thing in the morn to purchase their most delectable of sweet and savories—we found ourselves earlier and earlier out of bed in an effort to catch their elusive and wholly delicious cinnamon-sugar twist! They also offer inexpensive sandwiches for lunch, as well as a wide selection of rustic breads in rounds, loaves and baguettes of varying French, sour, sweet and wheat composition.

Four Sisters Bakery I first found out about Four Sisters Bakery at the Kahului Swap Meet. I was hungry and passed a stall selling a variety of baked goods, among them something called Cheese Rolls—soft rolls baked with cheese inside and then dusted with sugar.

A wholehearted fan of bread and cheese I bought some to munch on while strolling through the place. They were so good I saved the wrapping so I could figure out where to buy more. This traditional Filipino style bakery is even open on Sunday. They have cinnnamon rolls, ensemadas, and other treats truly reasonably priced. The Cheese Rolls are just 30 cents each.

Broke Da Mouth Cookie Co. On a recent visit to this Kahului bakery—recently named Maui’s best small business with less than six employees— baker-owner Lloyd Yokoyama greeted us with our favorite words: “Try this!”

With a knowing smile, Yokoyama opened jar after jar of butterific samples and we happily obliged. We figure there’s always room for one more cookie! And there were lots to choose from: chocolate mac-nut, oatmeal raisin, almond, peanut butter, coconut crunch and more. We accepted defeat after our 18th sample but we’ll be going back. It’s a shame Yokoyama doesn’t keep samples of his jaw-dropping mile-high Lilikoi cake or the tantalizing chocolate-haupia pie in a jar.

Lucky are those of you living in Makawao. You have the privilege of showing up at Komoda’s every morning for their fresh baked breads, amazing donuts and pastries, anpan, pies, hot dogs and their famous cream puffs.

Komoda’s is the only Upcountry bakery, with a large selection of baked goods. Its cream puffs are mentioned in just about every Internet travel blog about Maui so if you haven’t made a pilgrimage yet to this bakery, it’s about time. Ikuo Komoda founded this bakery and store around 1920, and his third and fourth generation family members are running the business and safeguarding his recipes. Their stick donut is to die for.

Try these fresh baked treats the next time you are at the restaurant.

The turnovers come in apple, peach, coconut and pineapple. Just check the counter or ask your server what’s available because they go fast. Sato’s manju is traditional, featuring azuki bean filling and a baked pastry crust. They go perfect with green tea for a morning or afternoon break.

Moana Bakery & Café I have three words for you, people: strudel, strudel, strudel! Okay, so that’s really just one word repeated three times. But the point is, the strudel at Moana Bakery is more than merely “a pastry usually consisting of a fruit, cheese, or other mixture rolled in a paper-thin sheet of dough and baked” as defined by Webster’s. You see, the strudel at Moana is so way beyond that! I can’t even begin to describe this massive treat, only to say that you must EAT IT or forever perish in the depths of your supreme ignorance and anti-sweet malaise. They have other good stuff like cookies and croissants. But um, STRUDEL. Got it?

Maui’s Dee-Lites The first time I walked into Maui’s DeeLites the ladies were working on a Lilikoi sauce that smelled so good I knew I would be back. Located next to the Singer Discount Fabric Store, this small island bakery has some of the best homemade local snacks you can find, from chicharone to dried fish to wasabi nuts.

Hands down Dee-lite bakery has the best shortbread cookies on the planet. They also make Lilikoi cheesecake, lemon bars and other surprises.

Probably the most prolific bakery on Maui, the Home Maid Bakery was founded in 1960 and provides its baked goods to Foodland, Star Market, 7-11, Long’s and Minit Stops. You can find their biggest and best selection at their Wailuku store.

Every local person on the island knows to bring Home Maid Bakery’s crispy deluxe manju as omiyage (gifts) when traveling outer-island. Home Maid Bakery also has bento lunches, a variety of inexpensive and fresh breads, mochi, cakes and pies along with their pastries and donuts, all very reasonably priced. Hot Malasadas can be bought every morning. Their jelly roll cakes are fancy and light, absolutely delicious, and don’t need a special occasion to be consumed.

Cinnamon Roll Fair Hawai’i Gooey goodness awaits when you step up to the counter at Cinnamon Roll Fair. These quintessential rolls will not disappoint. In fact, you may not be able to eat another roll after you try these. Every so often, a huge sheet of ‘em comes out of the oven and you can smell it clear down the block.

Each roll is approximately six square inches of swirled dough, sugar and cinnamon.

You’ll probably want one all to yourself but be forewarned—this one’s a belly bomb. You can also opt for toppings, like macadamia nuts, cream cheese, pecans or pineapple—although we don’t know why you’d wanna ruin such a perfect creation with such triflings.

Their lunches are awesome, with a great selection of crisp salads like ceasar, tofu and crab. The sandwiches are large and come on their baked breads with all the traditional fillings. They also have soup and roll for $3.95. Just be sure to follow it up with dessert.

Curry in a Hurry caters to the local population, with a strong contingent of regulars, some who even come twice a day for meals. “You want a kick, you come here,” Lori Lee said.

The Maynes work 15-hour shifts in their teeny-tiny café, cooking from 7 a.m. to noon and taking care of customers until 8 p.m. Lori Lee told me of their aspiration to franchise the store across the country, believing it would be a hit in college towns and plazas. For a moment I shared Lori Lee’s vision of “a Curry in a Hurry across from every McDonald’s in the world.”

Unlucky for me, Friday equals “super spicy” day. My sensitive palate prohibits me from enjoying anything above mild, but Lori Lee gave me some samples of her Santa Fe black bean chili and South Indian Mung Bean soup—aptly dubbed the “Mighty Mung” for its 26 grams of protein per cup. It was yummy but sizzled my tongue.

There are two homemade vegan soups and four vegan curries every day, as well as a selection of pastries and gourmet desserts.

Everything comes in two portions, small— which is really small—goes for $4.50 and large for $8.50. They take pride in having no microwaves, prefab or frozen foods, preservatives and use mostly organic ingredients.

For fear that my mouth would burst into flames with a whole order of curry, I decided instead on a vegetable pastry. About five inches square, it looked like a little pillow full of Maui onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and eggplant baked into a flaky puff pastry. It was delicious and more importantly, didn’t cause my head to smoke. My pastry was one of a small batch made that morning in a minuscule kitchen by a couple that cooks their health philosophy and culinary know-how into their food.

Lori Lee creates a whole family of pastries, veggie-burgers, veggie lasagna, veggie crepes, falafels, tofu tandoori and spanakopita. It’s all very edible. Every day features a special grouping of soups, salads and pastries that a person could definitely arrange their calendar around. Lori Lee suggested I come back on a Monday or Tuesday when her curry specials come a bit milder.

Since I’m a firm believer in dessert, I ordered the Hawaiian mango-lime cheesecake with macadamia nut crust. A very rich little delicacy, it brought my lunch full circle in having gone to a curry café and eaten everything BUT curry. Oh, the plight of enjoying Indian food but being a wimp! MTW

[STAGE] You know how movies about movies sort of make you feel privy to some secret world that’s usually hidden from us? Well, just think of the mysteries that a musical about musicals could reveal!

The acclaimed musical A Chorus Line, which lit up Broadway for 15 years, is here. The musical is about actors and dancers auditioning for a new Broadway production and showcases their stories, song and dance numbers. Another documentary on the dreamers out there, whose romantic and artistic souls drive them to sacrifice an ordinary life on the prayer that their dream may come true… The irony in this musical is that the actual performers fit so well into character, playacting the same emotions, competitiveness and grit that secured them a spot in the Broadway Touring Company. Shows like this give me profound respect for thespians, as well as simultaneous relief that I have no talent that can turn into self-torture. [PARTY] Maui OnStage is hosting their second annual Masquerade Ball—“An Evening of Stars II.” Like last year, you can expect the sultry jazz of Benoit Jazz, ever flowing cocktails, a medley of musical theater and dance ensembles, a dinner extravaganza, dancing, a treasure hunt, silent and live auctions, and a costume contest. Now that I think of it, the latter is appropriate as well—due to the fact that Halloween gives me, as well as most ladies anywhere near my age group, a legitimate reason to go out in public dressed like a total slut. But that’s neither here nor there. The Belly Roll Dance Company is presenting a special “Halloween Shimmy Nights,” featuring the newly created Rock-a-Belly dance troupe. Apparently, they got a little crazy with the costumes, perhaps more scandalous? Yay! One part Silence Of The Lambs, one part Ten Little Indians and still carrying a lasting dosage of Se7en, Saw II reveals a horror franchise to be reckoned with. A superior grade of actors and a virtuosic application of gore make the sequel more entertaining than the original even if the movie bogs down in its own Karo syrup blood and nebulous plot excursions. A group of eight strangers attempt to escape from a sealed house ingeniously boobytrapped by serial killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) while Detective Eric Mason (Donnie Wahlberg—The Sixth Sense) attempts to rescue his teen son Daniel (Eirk Knudsen) from the trapped victims.

Saw II

★★★★★ Rated R/91 mins.

In the opening sequence, a man sits with a spring-loaded Venus flytrap device attached to his head as he watches a videotape of his eye being implanted with a key to the contraption. Jigsaw taunts the man via intercom to slice open his eye and extract the key that will free him before the timed device impales his skull with innumerable spikes. The sequence gives a crucial clue to the anxious situation that the audience will be exposed to for the remainder of the increasingly gory thrill-ride.

Career Detective Mason has an argument with his son that sets up the itching guilt that festers in him when he discovers that Daniel is among Jigsaw’s hostages. In a bold maneuver to get a leg up on their horror savvy audience, the filmmakers allow Mason and his S.W.A.T. team to uncover Jigsaw’s whereabouts and come face to face with our de facto Hannibal Lechter inside his hellish crack house lair.

But the cops get much more than they bargained for because the terminally ill Jigsaw is running a live video feed from

cameras inside the secured house where his victims run amok as poisonous gas creeps into their bodies. It’s through this clever plot device that Jigsaw is able to command his interrogator’s attention and personally torment Detective Mason whose sins of planting evidence and physically abusing prisoners serve as Jigsaw’s motivation for this particular parlay.

Music video veteran Darren Lynn Bousman co-wrote the script for Saw II with Leigh Whannell (screenwriter and actor for Saw) and gets a more consistent level of performance from the actors than director James Wan achieved on the first movie. Although Saw II is Bousman’s feature film debut, the young director exhibits and facility for pacing and tone that enables the audience to trust him. Where a director like Rob Zombie alienates his audience, Bousman guides you like a master of ceremonies through a carefully designed exhibition of terror.

The horror elements of the Saw franchise are based on key visceral ingredients of claustrophobia, inevitable death and a medieval fascination with mangled flesh and dismemberment. Nevertheless, it works against the audience’s potential for empathy that the victims here are ex-cons (however innocent), except for the boy protagonist who barely exerts any personality traits other than as a scared witness to unspeakable horrors.

The Saw films are members of an ilk of extreme horror movies like High Tension and Wolf Creek where victims are subjected to a nihilistic brand of brutal intimidation and fear. But the Saw films have a presentational quality mixed with a kind of winking humor.

The audience is thrown into a series of enclosed environments where the victims are suffering the worst kind of physical and mental abuse imaginable. We step into the shoes of a helpless prisoner whose crimes could never match the kind of punishment we watch them endure.

Our sense of fear and empathy is allowed to surge up inside us and challenge our expectations.

In other words, there’s a safety net built into this particular formula of terrorizing thrills. But that still doesn’t mean you should take kids. MTW

New This Week SAW 2 - (R) - Horror - I love a good mind screw. When I watch a thriller, I’m disappointed when I can figure out the ending before it plays out. So when a movie keeps me guessing until the end and then throws me a curveball, I am thoroughly impressed.

The first Saw not only did that, it made me wet the bed. Really—my housemate doesn’t let me watch scary movies late night anymore. In the second Saw , the bad guy has eight people in a room—let the mutilation and mind games begin! And I’m going to buy plastic sheets. 93 min. (Heidi King) LEGEND OF ZORRO 2 - (PG-13) - ActionAdventure - Now that Zorro has fought and won the battle over California he faces his biggest challenge… marriage. Zorro must try to keep the promise he made to his wife to give up his secret identity and lead a normal life, meanwhile the threat of danger from bandits is more real than ever. Hopefully the married life hasn’t dwindled the sexual tension between these two. That’s the best part. (Gabrielle Poccia) PRIME - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy - Rafi (Uma Thurman) is a 37-year-old divorcee who’s seeing a therapist, Lisa (Meryl Streep).

But then things get better when Rafi starts banging a 23-year-old hottie—for a while, that is, because that 23-year-old hottie is actually Lisa’s son! Oh my God! You see, this is one of those plots that makes for either a terrible mainstream movie or an award-winning porn flick, so please beware. 106 min .

(Anthony Pignataro) WEATHER MAN - (R) - Drama, Comedy Dave Spirtz is a popular Chicago area weatherman with a disastrous personal life who suddenly gets a chance to audition for a national morning show. Why am I not surprised that Nicholas Cage plays Spirtz? Look, Cage is a decent actor ( Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart, Bringing Out the Dead ) but he seriously needs a new agent ( Guarding Tess, Con Air, National Treasure and now, apparently, this picture). 102 min. (GP) DOOM - (R) - Sci-Fi, Thriller - Houston, we have a very big problem. Our research facility here on Mars has unknowingly opened up a door to hell and now nightmarish creatures are swarming the place killing everyone they come in contact with.

Please send some hardened marines up here to close the portal and thus save the Earth... In fact, send Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—he’s our only hope. End transmission. 140 min. (GP) DREAMER - (PG) - Family, Drama - This right here is your poor man’s Seabiscuit . Kurt Russell plays the great horseman whose best days seem behind him; Dakota Fanning is his wide-eyed daughter who ends up nursing a badly injured racehorse back to health. Don’t forget the tissues. Also stars Elizabeth Shue and Kris Kristofferson. 98 min. (AP) ELIZABETHTOWN - (PG-13) - Romance - When fine-ass Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) gets canned from his hot-shot job in the big city, he feels like nothing will ever be good for him again. Then he finds out that his father has died and he has to return to his hometown to retrieve the remains.

On the plane he meets an upbeat flight attendant named Claire (Kirsten Dunst). With her positive outlook and his need for reassurance, a beautiful bond is formed. 135 min. (GP) FLIGHTPLAN - (PG13) - Action, Thriller - Forty thousand feet above earth Kyle (Jodie Foster) and her daughter are among many passengers flying for the first time in one of the world’s first doubledecker airplanes. Mid-flight, Kyle returns to her seat after a short absence to find that her child is nowhere to be found. Astonishingly, after pleading with the staff for help, she is confronted with the fact that there’s no record of her daughter ever being on the flight. At this Kyle must wonder if she’s lost her mind or if there’s some sort of conspiracy against her. 120 min. (GP) THE FOG - (PG-13) - Horror - You know, I’m kind of a sissy when it comes to getting scared easily, but fog has never been an issue. One of my exes wasn’t afraid of anything, except the fog. Weird, huh?

Well, this feature takes place in Northern California, which can get very foggy when you’re on the coast.

Apparently, there was a shipwreck 100 years prior, and now, in present day, the lost souls are coming back cloaked in the fog... for revenge. Who the hell is still alive that could’ve pissed them off? I don’t know. Normally, I scoff at horror flicks that only make the PG13 rating. But, in this case, I may just have to relish in the terror it hopefully inflicts upon my cheating ex. 100 min. (HK) THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED - (PG) - Family - Francis Quimet, an ameteur golfer from a working class family, shocked the golf world (and simply anybody who was anybody) when in

1913 he beat all odds and defeated his hero and golf champion, Harry Vardon. Sorry to ruin it but everyone knew that the Titanic was goin’ down and that movie grossed millions. Besides, it’s the journey not the destination. 115 min. (GP) A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE - (R) - Drama Viggo Mortensen stars in this David Cronenberg thriller about the relentless way in which violence will take over and consume a man’s life. After Mortensen, a quiet diner owner, thwarts a robbery and gets hero attention, two mobsters suddenly appear with less than honorable intentions.

It takes an extended family to create a theater community. There are those who participate once in a while and then there are people like Johnny and Alexis Ziegler, who donate their free time to keeping the arts alive.

“Theater is one of the last places left that bring people together,” says Johnny.

In these last four years they have participated in every production for Maui OnStage, as well as a variety of others. Alexis has even shared her great artistic talent painting some of the sets.

The Zieglers have been living on Maui since 1989, when an airline refused to change their ticket on their way home to Seattle from a yearlong trip exploring Asia.

Loving the adrenaline of windsurfing and surfing big waves, they decided to stay.

You can hear the excitement in their voices when they talk of charging 20, 30 or even 40-foot waves. It’s the same when they speak of the thrill and challenge of the stage. You could almost say that the Zieglers are fueled by the rush of the extreme wave of theater.

“It’s amazing,” says Johnny. “[It’s like] magic that is woven together—the show is going up no matter what and everyone has to get their act together AND be good! This fun pressure is exciting.”

You can see the Zieglers performing at the Masquerade Ball this Saturday, as well as MAPA’s upcoming performance of Scrooge opening Nov. 25. MTW

You can’t feel empathy for a massive corporation that takes the lion’s share of the money from your CD purchase. You need the dough more than they do. Take the evil recording industry out of the picture, though, and suddenly you’re robbing your rock idol— something that’s not as easy to do. Record companies are screwed; as long as they’re around, dipping their long dinosaur fingers into whatever money’s left in the industry, piracy will flourish. You get the concept, right? Well, same thing goes for your current situation: the part of the equation you don’t like depends on the part you’ve so far refused to take out of it. Rethink that, and your problem’s solved.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) When I went off to summer camp as a kid, it was its own world. Contact with folks and friends back home happened through handwritten letters and the occasional brief coin-funded phone call. It was a chance for me and my fellow campers to try on new selves, unhampered by the expectations of those who already knew us.

Camp’s not like that anymore; everyone’s got cellphones and email and stays mostly stuck in their at-home selves, because they never really leave them behind. You’re similarly limited. Too many ties are strapping you into who you were. To become who you want to be, you’ve got to find a way to shake them off, if only temporarily.

This week is a fantastic time to attempt just that.

The Early Days, Part 3: How I Got the Job Several weeks ago, I think: A pre-Holoholo city girl returns to Maui from San Francisco, having recently imported her new Trainer boyfriend…

August, 1999: Once on Maui, the living was easy for the Trainer and I. We both got jobs at the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina, and decided to set up house at a Pukalani duplex. Surprisingly, the transition was smooth for my former hardcore-partying city boy. He made friends quickly and seemed completely at ease with his new laidback island lifestyle.

I, on the other hand, felt like I’d made a terrible mistake.

Don’t get me wrong—I was absolutely in love with the Trainer. He had a creative spirit that was inspiring, an encyclopedic knowledge of everything and he made me laugh constantly. He was my best friend and he always treated me with respect. The sex was great and he was probably the best boyfriend I’d ever had. But still, I wasn’t happy.

For one thing, I was bored and didn’t know if I wanted to stay on Maui. I went through a ton of jobs, hanging onto several at a time while I tried to figure out what I wanted to do with myself. The marine bio thing was out—being a volunteer boat tour guide wouldn’t pay my hefty school loans and I didn’t want to go to grad school and accumulate more debt.

Plus, it seemed to me that most marine biology jobs had a very narrow focus—studying “small-scale biological physical chemical interactions in plankton” for 20 years just didn’t hold the same glamorous flavor it did when I was an impressionable young dork in Santa Cruz.

So I got a job at a Wailea resort in room service.

It was an interesting job. And it paid really well. The perks were good, too. In fact, the perks were by far the best part of the job.

All fulltime employees got your standard vacation and holiday pay, a killer retirement plan and free rooms at any of the company’s resorts. But the perks working in room service far exceeded all that. We had snacking access to top-notch cuisine from the resort’s fine dining restaurants and pastry department, all the coffee we could drink, near-nightly champagne tastings and a truly inside look at how the rich and famous live. It was good stuff.

I’ve delivered prune juice to supermodels, spaghetti and peanut butter sandwiches to rock stars, ice cream sundaes to a pop princess, $1,800 bottles of cognac to a famous comedian and countless other necessities to actors, politicians and actors-turned-politicians.

You kinda get over being starstruck when you’re faced with serving macaroni and cheese to a celebrity in his white cotton briefs.

I’ve also seen the ugly side of the fabulously wealthy. Like one of the most powerful women in the world getting irate over the price of a $4 kid’s meal. Or the famous son of a legendary musician whining about some pants he wanted to be on sale. And an Oscar-winning actor who slurps his soup and the action “hero” who uses his shower as a toilet.

I guess the point is that money doesn’t buy you class, style or happiness. And my well-paying job was starting to wear me down. Four years had passed since the Trainer and I had relocated to Maui, and over five years since I’d graduated college. I needed to do something that involved using my brain more, something creative maybe. I wanted to do something that mattered. I wanted a life.

So I decided to take a vacation, determined to find another job or simply to leave Maui. That’s when I saw the ad for “Proofreader” in this very paper. Obviously, I got the job—I think I was the only applicant—and started driving in the morning from our new pad in Haiku to the Maui Time office in Lahaina, then to my night job in Wailea, then back to Haiku late evening.

Almost immediately, I started writing. I was awkward, nervous—still am, actually. Look, I’m sorry to get all hokey here but I found exactly what I was looking for… which was great ‘cause the very next month, I got dumped. And I was out of a place to live.

But it all worked out.
