Last weekend my wife and I packed our two kids and our pet Beagle Reginald into our Lincoln Navigator and headed off for a nice drive across our fair Valley Isle. It was a gorgeous clear day, and we all looked forward to a grand day of sightseeing.

And it was wonderful, except that all the unsightly junk cars we saw littering the roadsides really distracted from the experience.

Both my wife and I were shocked and, frankly, appalled. And not simply for the sake of our children.

Maui depends on visitors for much of our economic growth. What do you think they say when they fly all the way here only to see a broken-down Datsun pickup dumped at their favorite vista?

I had thought our state and local officials had taken care of this matter, but now I guess not. Are we not crushing cars now? Did not our esteemed governor declare an islandwide emergency? Why are we continuing to sit by and do nothing while these eyesores pile up on our public roads?

My wife and I are law-abiding, taxpaying citizens. We are trying to raise our family in what we thought was paradise. Unless things turn around soon, I’m afraid we’ll have to pack our things and move back to Nantucket, where these kinds of things don’t happen.

Hello! I’m just a regular, run-of-the-mill sedan with jacked up seats, no front end at all, a less than completely intact engine and no license plates. I can’t just drive myself anywhere. But you see, my owner can. Did I mention he’s a crackhead? And an idiot?

Anyway, last week one of the many voices in his head told him that I was possessed by demons, so he decided the best course of action was to dump me by the side of the road. Did you ever stop to think that maybe guys like him are the actual problem?

I’m sorry, do I sound cranky? Maybe it’s because someone came by last night and threw a rock through my windshield, smashing it into a million frickin’ pieces.

Hold on, some guy’s walking by with a tire iron and a brick… Oh hell, he’s stealing my left rear wheel, which also happens to be my last wheel. What the hell is he going to do with just one wheel?

Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, cursing jackasses like you. You know what’s a blight on this island? Busybody jerks who run around whining about nonsense while totally ignoring serious societal problems. I’d cry for you, except that yahoo who threw a rock at me also took out the windshield wipers and cleaner. MTW

I pick up hitchhikers quite frequently, but I guess it just wasn’t your lucky day. Did you ever think that maybe it just wasn’t possible for me to give you a ride that morning? Maybe I had groceries covering my seats, leaving no place for you to sit. Maybe I was picking up a bunch of friends to go surfing. Or maybe I had an overprotective dog in the back seat that doesn’t take to strangers. Even if none of these scenarios were true, I’m a single woman: I don’t EVER have to pick up hitchhikers. Tilting at Windmills Why state officials halted construction of the Kaheawa Wind Power site Maui County Fair promoters weren’t the only ones relieved that Tropical Storm Kenneth missed Maui last weekend.

Possibly even more worried were those building Maui’s first commercial wind farm and officials from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).

That’s because Kaheawa Wind Power LLC engineers currently grading the stretch of the Pali near McGregor Point

have been failing to meet the conditions of their construction permit, numerous state officials told Maui Time Weekly on condition of anonymity. In fact, DLNR officials worried that a major storm like Kenneth could cause the newly excavated, non-compacted soil at the construction site to wash down over the Honoapi’ilani Highway and into the near shore reef at Ma’alaea. Officials also worried that construction storm runoff could cause an auto accident and close the Pali.

If only they were trying to build something like this...

Responding to complaints from concerned citizens, Daniel Ornellas, the Maui Land Agent with the state Division of Land Management, conducted site visits to the construction site on Sept. 23 and Sept. 26 of this year. Apparently he didn’t like what he saw because just two days later, state DLNR Enforcement officer Randy Awo delivered a Cease and Desist Notice to Kaheawa, halting all construction.

Though such a notice is a public document, no DLNR official would release it to Maui Time by press time. DLNR spokeswoman Debra Ward would only confirm that state officials are conducting an investigation of the wind farm situation.

Contacted independently, DLNR Enforcement Officer Randy Awo went a bit further. “I support the Department’s decision to look further into this matter,” he said. “It’s important that we ensure that appropriate practices are in place to properly protect and manage our natural resources.”

The Kaheawa Pastures site, located between Ma’alaea and McGregor Point, sits on state conservation land. The Conservation District Use Permit (CDUP) granted to Kaheawa Wind Power by the state Board of Land and Natural Resources carries strict conditions that must be met to prevent any environmental damage.

“We respect DLNR’s position,” said Mike Gresham, the president of Makana Nui Associates, the minority partner of the Kaheawa wind farm project. “Our goal is to make everyone involved in this project proud of our work. We strive to not only adhere to the conditions of our permit, we want to exceed them.”

Gresham says they are working to mitigate the DLNR’s concerns. “We are terracing the dirt piles in excavated areas and putting in berms to prevent soil erosion into nearby waters,” he said. “We are adding rock screens to prevent rock fall and adding silt fences to prevent run-off… The Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed for the project by the State Department of Health and the project’s Civil Engineers were designed for normal seasonal rainfall, but not for a tropical hurricane or storm.”

Kaheawa Wind Power began construction on the southern slopes of the West Maui Mountains on Sept. 1. They are erecting 20 General Electric wind turbines at elevations ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 feet, which will provide Maui with a new source of alternative energy.

The company said its 20 General Electric wind turbines will generate 1.5 megawatts of energy for a total output of 30 megawatts of electricity that will be sold to Maui Electric Co. The wind power will supply up to nine percent of local demand.

Gresham couldn’t say how long construction would be on hold while his company works to mitigate DLNR’s concerns, but said the facility should be completed by April 2006. MTW

WE SCREWED UP You know how at the end of summer when all the Irish people leave and all the Help Wanted signs go up? At first nothing seems wrong, but then you end up getting your lattes and smoothies all wrong because all these new people start getting trained?

Yeah, something like that happened here last week. Due to considerable technical difficulties, almost comical errors of omission, a bizarre coincidence or two and insufficient supervision by yours truly, the Da Kine Calendar in our Sept. 29, 2005 issue was actually from our Sept. 30, 2004 issue.

For that reason, please disregard all the Da Kine listings in that issue except the Beyond Reality Strikes Back write-up in our STAGE listings, which somehow we managed to get completely correct for reasons that frankly we don’t yet understand.

Anyway, we apologize to our readers for any inconvenience this might have caused and to anyone hoping to promote their show/lecture/drug abuse support meeting. Our Da Kine Calendar remains Maui’s most comprehensive source for arts, entertainment and political events, and we promise we won’t screw up like this again.

Cunning Lingle WHAT GOVERNOR LINDA LINGLE SAID IN A SEPT. 30, 2005 ASSOCIATED PRESS STORY ON BEVERLY HARBIN, HER RECENT APPOINTEE TO THE STATE LEGISLATURE: “It was very disappointing to find out she wasn’t the person I thought she was.”

WHAT SHE DIDN’T SAY: Apparently, those applying for a Maui County liquor license go through a more stringent background check than those seeking Lingle’s appointment to the state Legislature.

How else to explain why Lingle’s staff somehow missed that in 1987 Harbin had been convicted of writing three bad checks (a misdemeanor, which actually doesn’t prevent her from holding public office) and currently owes $125,000 in state income taxes? The Honolulu Star-Bulletin was able to discover these facts, and they’re just a newspaper.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 28 Lost in all the debate over whether the Akaka Bill will actually lead to Native Hawaiians bugging out of the U.S. of A is any discussion on why locals would want to pack up the American Flag. It all seemed so nonsensical to me—the U.S. enjoys outstanding standard of living, universal suffrage and complete and unfettered access to big box retail outlets. But then I was looking through some newspapers this weekend, and suddenly I got the feeling that everything would be better if I was a Native Hawaiian.

For instance, yesterday Republican House Majority Leader Tom “The Hammer” DeLay got indicted and may have to go to “The Slammer.” He’s up on charges of conspiring in 2002 to channel corporate contributions to state GOP candidates, which is illegal.

He’s a Texas fixture, and it’s doubtful he’ll serve time even if he’s guilty. Who wouldn’t want to live in a nation with such a stellar federal government?

THURSDAY, SEPT. 29 Did someone say “stellar federal government?” That’s so cool, because today I got a letter from the Blue Dog Coalition! Oh boy, Oh Boy, OH BOY!!!

For the longest time I’ve been waiting for them to write, and now they finally have. For you heathen out there who don’t know, the Blue Dogs are Democrats—like our very own Ed Case!—who believe that championing traditional Republican issues like balanced budgets and fiscal conservatism is the path to success. Okay, so they’re,

well, pansy-asses. But they have hearts of gold. That being said, their letter “urged” President George W. Bush to “call an emergency bipartisan budget summit to address the nation’s added fiscal burden in the wake of Gulf Region reconstruction efforts.” Oh my God—demands like that will push Dubya right to the line.

Maybe even over it! Seriously, this is not right. What the hell took this crew so long to figure out that the federal budget had exploded? We’ve always known Bush was going to bankrupt the country. Remember during the 2000 campaign how he was calling for tax cuts even though the economy was strong? Then when the economy turned south, he said the solution was tax cuts? Hey Blue Dogs: unless your summit will teach Bush high school economics, we’re doomed.

MONDAY, OCT. 3 Did someone say “mandatory minimum?” I wonder what the minimum sentence is for money laundering. I’m curious because the AP just reported that a Texas grand jury has just added that charge to Tom “The Hammer” DeLay’s indictment.

It’s hard to convey just how earth-shattering the idea of a Texas—TEXAS!—grand jury throwing the book at The Hammer truly is. After all, DeLay used to be an exterminator, and he approaches politics with much the same attitude.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 30 Did someone say we’re doomed? Well, apparently the Superferry isn’t doomed.

In fact, the Honolulu Advertiser is reporting today that it just scored its second court victory against those evil, evil environmentalist groups that keep insisting the proposed inter-island auto ferry submit to a full environmental review. You know, since the state is spending $40 million on Kahului Harbor expansion to accommodate the thing. Anyway, this ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Helen Gillmor hopefully means we don’t have to listen to any more of the Superferry officials’ super whining about how these lawsuits have put the project funding in jeopardy. Unless, of course, the environmental groups appeal…

The piece does a great job showing how state officials quickly turned a “temporary” 1995 decision to ship 300 inmates out of overcrowded Hawaiian prisons to Texas into official policy, resulting in a situation where nearly half of our state’s prison population now

One professor quoted in the story compares the situation to the old days, when governments exiled inmates to penal colonies—except in this case, all these prisoners will someday return to our fair islands. The story goes on to point out how state officials have no new local prisons planned, but completely fails to address the heart of the matter, which is why Hawai’i is producing so many new cons. You know, the increased popularity of jailing drug users as well as handcuffing judges with “mandatory minimum” sentencing requirements can’t be helping.

LATEST STEP IN MALE OBSOLESCENCE In September, Dr. Paul De Sousa and a research team at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, told a professional audience that they had just created human embryos from female eggs without using sperm. De Sousa’s team employed electrical shocks to “trick” 300 eggs into dividing as if fertilized and was successful six times, creating 50-cell “blastocysts” that could eventually produce stem cells. De Sousa denied that his embryos would be implanted into wombs to create female fetuses (and said his government license does not authorize that), but could grow replacement tissue for a faulty organ of the egg’s donor.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION For 25 years, Multnomah County, Ore., has set aside one percent of public building construction money for art, meaning almost $600,000 worth for its new $58 million jailhouse. Who Did You Torture During the War, Daddy?

Or, we are all torturers now Never miss the Saturday paper.

Because it’s the skimpiest and least-circulated edition of the week, it’s the venue of choice for lowballing the stories the government can’t completely cover up. Sept. 24’s New York Times, for example, contained the bombshell revelation that the U.S. government continues to torture innocent men, women and children in Iraq.

An army captain and two sergeants from the elite 82nd Airborne Division confirm previous reports that Bagram and other concentration camps in U.S.-occupied Afghanistan are a kind of Torture University where American troops are taught how to abuse prisoners who have neither been charged with nor found guilty of any crime.

“The soldiers told Human Rights Watch that while they were serving in Afghanistan,” reports The Times, “they learned the stress techniques [sic] from watching Central Intelligence Agency operatives interrogating prisoners.”

Veterans who served as prison guards in Afghanistan went on to apply their newfound knowledge at Abu Ghraib and other facilities in U.S.-occupied Iraq.

One of the sergeants, his name withheld to protect him from Pentagon reprisals, confirms that torture continued even after the Abu Ghraib scandal broke. “We still did it, but we were careful,” he told HRW. The latest sordid revelations concern Tiger Base on the border with Syria, and Camp Mercury, near Fallujah, the Iraqi city leveled by U.S. bombs in a campaign that officials claimed would finish off the insurgent movement. After the army told him to shut up over the course of 17 months, Captain Ian Fishback wrote to two conservative Republican senators to tell them about the “death threats, beatings, broken bones, murder, exposure to elements, extreme forced physical exertion, hostage-taking, stripping, sleep deprivation and degrading treatment” carried out against Afghans and Iraqis unlucky enough to fall into American hands.

“We would give them blows to the head, chest, legs and stomach, and pull them down, kick dirt on them,” one sergeant said. “This happened every day... We did it for amusement.” Another soldier says detainees were beaten with a broken chemical light stick: “That made them glow in the dark, which was real funny, but it burned their eyes, and their skin was irritated real bad.” An off-duty cook told an Iraqi prisoner “to bend over and broke the guy’s leg with a... metal bat.”

The sergeant continues: “I know that now.

LC Watch Just a Minute

This isn’t the victory we want, right?

It was wrong. There are a set of standards. But you gotta understand, this was the norm.”

Torture, condemned by civilized nations and their citizens since the Renaissance, has continued to be carried out in prisons and internment camps in every nation. But save for a few exceptions, such as France’s overt torture of Algerian independence fighters during the late 1950s, it has been hidden away, lied about and condemned when exposed. Torture is shameful. It is never official policy.

That changed in the United States after 9/11. Current attorney general Alberto Gonzales authored a convoluted legal memo to George W. Bush justifying torture. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld officially sanctioned keeping them naked and threatening them with vicious dogs. Bush declared that U.S. forces in Afghanistan would ignore the Geneva Conventions. By 2004 a third of Americans told pollsters that they didn’t have a problem with torture.

By Monday, Sept. 26, the story of torture at Camps Tiger and Mercury to which New York Times editors had granted page one treatment two days earlier had vanished entirely. Only a few papers, such as the Seattle Times and Los Angeles Times, ran follow-ups.

In his 2000 book Unspeakable Acts, Ordinary People: The Dynamics of Torture, John Conroy presciently describes the surprising means by which democracies are actually more susceptible to becoming “torture societies” than dictatorships: Where “notorious regimes have fallen, there has been a public acknowledgement that people were tortured. But in democracies of long standing in which torture has taken place, denial takes

hold and official acknowledgement is extremely slow in coming, if it appears at all.”

Conroy goes on to describe the “fairly predictable” stages of governmental response: First, writes Conroy, comes “absolute and complete denial.” Rumsfeld told Congress in 2004 that the U.S. had followed Geneva “to the letter” in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“The second stage,” he says, is “to minimize the abuse.” Republican mouthpiece Rush Limbaugh compared the murder and mayhem at Abu Ghraib to fraternity hazing rituals.

Next is “to disparage the victims.” Bush Administration officials and right-wing pundits call the victims of torture in U.S. custody “terrorists,” implying that detainees—who have not been charged with crimes— deserve whatever they get. Dick Cheney called victims of torture at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba “the worst of a very bad lot.” Rumsfeld called them “the worst of the worst.”

Bear in mind: Conroy wrote his book in 2000, before Bush seized power and more than a year before 9/11 was given as a pretext for legalizing torture.

For reasons I’d rather not get into because they involve liquor, I was unable to attend the Sept. 1, 2005 Maui County Department of Liquor Adjudication Board hearing. But on Sept. 26, I was able to read through the meeting’s verbatim minutes.

I’m sorry I wasn’t able to attend, because it was a choice hearing—especially at the end, when the board spent a surprising amount of time discussing t-shirts. You know, the officially licensed LC shirts with little silk-screened fake LC badges that some of the LC officials like wearing.

Anyway, at the hearing it was time to order new shirts. What colors did the board members want? Blue? Black? Fuchsia? Pink?

“Ask [former Liquor Commissioner] Jimmy Gomes,” said member Darren Lopez. “He wore pink.”

“And he looked damn good in it,” said member M.D. Alborano.

Member Lance Collins objected to wearing blue, saying it reminded him too much of high school.

“Everybody can get whatever color they want,” LC Director Franklyn Silva finally said.

“We need to wear it at the state conference?” asked member Marilyn Chapman, referring to an upcoming gathering state liquor officials the members will be attending.

“Well, we kind of like to wear it,” Silva said.

“Well, there you go,” Chapman said. “I better order something.”

“Because we like to show off that we’re from Maui,” said Silva.

“Everybody gets jealous.”

“Okay-dokay, then,” said Chapman.

This was all apparently too much for Board Chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama, who suddenly jumped into the act.

“Your size is small?” he jokingly asked Chapman, shortly before adjourning the meeting.

“I like you, Mustard,” Chapman responded, who recognized that the meeting was still going on.

“We’re still on record.”

“It’s going to end up in the Maui Time Weekly,” Collins said, referring to her stillunconfirmed t-shirt size.

“No, it won’t,” said Chapman.

Building Imbalance Say goodbye to 11 more acres of Makena wilderness High-powered developer, landowner and Akaku public access cable mischiefmaker Everett Dowling is one Maui Planning Commission hearing away from converting 11 acres of Makena wilderness into luxury condos for the super rich. If all goes well, the Maui Planning Commission will soon approve Dowling’s plans to put 71 two-, three- and four-bedroom condo units between Pu’u Olai and the Makena Golf Course’s 15th fairway.

Dowling, whose motto is “Building in balance,” bought the 11 acres from Makena Resort a few years ago. Though not part of the resort’s big expansion plans, Dowling’s proposed condos will fit nicely into an area rapidly changing from dense, wild forests into a second Wailea of immaculate golf courses and hotels.

According to the Planning Department’s project staff report, construction will take 30 months and cost Dowling about $137 million. Given the multi-million dollar price tags on each of the units, Dowling should make about twice that when it’s done.

While there’s still one hearing left, Dowling will undoubtedly get his approval. At its Sept. 27, 2005 hearing, the Planning Commission shot down an attempt by the slow growth citizens group Maui Tomorrow to intervene because it was five days late in filing its petition.

Other agencies were far more supportive of Dowling’s plans. Asked to comment on the project, the state Department of Education (DOE) offered little more than a letter of recommendation for Dowling.

“We would like to note, however, that the applicant, Dowling Company, has been extremely supportive of Maui public schools and education in general, as evidenced by a strong track record of education initiatives,” DOE assistant superintendent Rae M. Loui wrote to the county planning department on July 11, 2005.

“Dowling Company has consistently supported Kamali’i Elementary School, which the company built as the first DOE turnkey project on Maui, through funding donations and program and facility upgrades.”

Indeed, Loui was so supportive of Dowling’s past contributions that it’s nearly impossible not to wonder about Dowling’s motivation for such acts of philanthropy as the $150,000 he gave Kamali’i Elementary back in August, which earned him a story in The Maui News on Aug. 18, 2005. Was he simply giving back to the community? Or was he looking for allies in his upcoming Makena fight?

Despite Dowling’s recent high-profile Hawaiian Homelands developments, the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs has considerable problems with the Makena plans. In fact, the agency wants the whole approval process

stopped temporarily so a new, comprehensive archaeological survey can take place.

According to the Planning Department’s project report filed for the Sept. 27, 2005 Maui Planning Commission hearing, it’s unknown how much time such an assessment would take

OHA pulled no punches in its official comments on Dowling’s plans and the whole issue of building at Makena in general.

“The rate and scale of development in the Makena area has increased steadily in recent years,” OHA Administrator Clyde W. Namu’o wrote the county Planning Department on June 15, 2005. “Unfortunately, this increase has not met the housing needs for working class families. To the contrary, local and native Hawaiian families have often had to sell their land due to high property taxes.

“This type of rapid development continues to disenfranchise native Hawaiians,” Namu’o continued. “The needs of local residents and developers are not in balance at the present time. Impacts on the natural resources and infrastructure of the region have been felt for years.” MTW

Burn, Baby, Burn Steven Manu Bacalso on what it’s like to be a fire knife dancer As told to Samantha Campos A couple weeks ago I visited Manu at the Feast at Lele in Lahaina. His performance comes near the end of the show’s four-region Polynesian journey of food and dance. While attendees polished off desserts, lights dimmed, drums rolled and the emcee enthusiastically announced the arrival of “Chief Manu!”

After what seemed like a few dramatic moments longer than usual, Manu jogged out from the kitchen entrance, grabbed the candle from my table and lit his torch with it. Then he bounced onto the stage and, without missing a beat, awed the crowd with dazzling feats of twirling knives, juggling flames, fire breathing and acrobats.

When the lights came on and the luau was over, Manu was inundated with accolades.

“You did great, hot stuff!”

“You’re hot!”

“Can I get a picture with you?”

Manu was sweaty but gracious, and tirelessly posed for photos. “Just another day at the office for me,” he said.

I like it now but I kinda didn’t like it in the beginning. I got hurt so much back then. But failure wasn’t an option.

I was born in 1964 on Oahu. I was raised in Ewa Beach as a Christian and

went to church. I have three brothers and a younger sister—I was a momma’s boy. I graduated in 1982 and was married for nine years.

I have a daughter, Hi’ilei Nani. She’s 12 now.

I started dancing in 1979. I’ve been dancing for 26 years. In 1980, I performed with the Halau Nawai Eha O Puna in the Merrie Monarch Festival and hula competition. We placed first.

I was a dancer at the Paradise Cove luau, but I also did street, jazz and Polynesian dance at different shows and groups on Oahu.

I’ve danced for every show in Waikiki. Every show, literally. Been there, done that. Twice. All the headliner guys—Don Ho, Al Harrington, Danny Keleikini, Tihati—all the shows on the strip. In Vegas, too. I was contracted to do shows at the Tropicana, Sahara and Jermaine’s for two weeks. It felt like a month.

I never wanted to do fire knife dancing. But in 1990, the Magic of Polynesia was opening.

My hula teachers at Paradise Cove—O’Brien and Thaddeus—told me to get my knives ready. I had a month and a half to get my routine ready.

My teachers told me, “If you’re gonna learn, you’re gonna learn from a Samoan teacher.”

So they sent me to Pulefano. He was in his 60s: very quiet, observant, old school, polite— very Mormon. It would take me two hours to get there and I’d have to bring food and gifts.

Training was just like in Karate Kid. It was a

very Mr. Miyagi, wipe-on/wipe-off kind of thing.

I got to know all the high elders of the Polynesian Cultural Center in Pulefano’s backyard. I learned to dance and speak Samoan. He taught me basic Samoan motions and moves, and different tricks. “Vili” is spinning the knife. “Kakai” is when you break off and roll the knife around on your hand.

All fire knife dancers have different styles.

Some stand there while the fire knife revolves around them. Pulefano stressed moving my body with the knife. Because I was a hula dancer, that was easy for me.

My first public fire knife performance, at the grand opening for Magic of Polynesia, was terrible. I made a fool of myself. A Honolulu newspaper columnist gonged me—said my routine was too long, too boring, I dropped too many times. Whatever was the worst thing he could say, he said it. I was devastated.

After that, I started practicing my butt off in the back of the dressing room. The other luau guys would be going out and doing stuff and I would practice, practice, practice. There’s no shortcuts in fire knife. Just practice.

I also got a lot of help from my Samoan friend Nephi Pomaikai’i Brown. He was the big, tattooed guy—“Nick”—in that movie 50 First Dates. Yeah, Nephi was the best fire knife dancer until he gained, like, a hundred pounds. He taught me about how to take the knife apart and put it back together, what kind

of fuel to use, wind direction and other kine technical stuff.

When I worked at the Magic show, I had an open file at the clinic across the street. I’ve had burns on my hands, face, chest—every night it’s something or other. I used to have long eyelashes and bangs to die for. Now they’re history! People used to ask, “Did you get burned?” and I would say, “Yeah, but I don’t need a doctor. I need a beautician!”

My biggest injury was when I bonked my head three times with the knives and I had to get stapled in my head and stitches—without anesthesia. The doc said it would be a little uncomfortable. It looked like I had a lobotomy.

That same night, I also lit my chest on fire.

That wasn’t so bad. Some guys have had real bad burns. One time, one of my friends caught the stage and his whole body on fire. I was nothing compared to that.

All my fire knife dancing friends have supported me. I feel like now I gotta kind of pass it on—give back to the community. A lot of these guys today are the top fire knife dancers.

I don’t really teach ‘em anything, I just give mental support. The sky’s the limit when you have support.

I’ve been to Brunei, Tahiti, Fiji, Japan and Kuala Lumpur to perform. I had an agent— Kathy Muller. I’ve done movies, commercials, print work. In the late ‘90s, I opened for Janet Jackson for Princess Amila’s birthday and hung out with the royal family.

I’ve always had the best gigs. I was in the right place at the right time. I’ve been lucky, very fortunate.

Then new management in the magic show offered me a job managing some other productions. I was working at Fed Ex at the time, supervising. I always had two jobs: the shakemy-booty, fire knife dancing job and the regular day job. But I thought I was getting old—I was in my late 30s. So I retired from fire knife dancing for three years.

I was an air ramp controller but I wanted to be an air traffic controller before I moved here. I loved that job. I had my house, my baby, my job—but for some reason, they asked my age and were like, “Ah, you’re too old. We thought you looked younger.” They turned me down. It’s ‘cause air traffic controllers get the burnout factor.

I was gonna be a flight attendant. But then I went to Chicago. I worked for an airline in Hawai’i. They taught me how to handle first class, how to speak: It’s not “how much,” it’s “how many.” Everything is “copasetic.” But Chicago is gross. It’s hell. I was freezing.

I watched the flight attendant in first class—it was such a shitty job. I could just imagine what coach class was like. Basically, you’re like a waiter, taking crap from everyone. I reached deep down inside and said, forget this, I don’t wanna be a flight attendant. So then I went to L.A., met Arsenio Hall and

Eddie Murphy, went to some clubs, drove around in a limo.

I moved to Maui for family reasons five years ago. I got a job as a bell clerk at Kapalua Hotel, where they handed me money, dressed me up and fed me everyday. Then 9/11 hit and I got the boot ‘cause I was the new guy. I applied everywhere.

I started dancing again for ‘Ulalena and fire knife at Feast at Lele. I would do their first nightly show there, then jump in my truck to do the show at Lele, then go back to ‘Ulalena to do the second show. I lost a lotta weight—I looked good back then!

My day job now is wastewater operator for Maui County in Honokowai. I get benefits, decent pay—it’s pretty much my retirement.

I’m trying to get into management. I started four years ago.

I’ve begun taking refuge in cool, aromatic cafes to do my writing. Each café is a miniature society, a place revealing some funny and disturbingly familiar tendencies in people. I’m quick to snicker at others, but lately I’ve been thinking that all of us—myself included—make case studies on human folly.

The average person enters a café, quickly drinks up the surroundings to get a feel for the place and crowd, then decides to hang out or jump ship. Many factors, both obvious and latent, affect this decision. Something as minor as a bit of eye-candy could draw a person in, while a long line or odd smell could make them beat feet.

Many patrons just blend into the milieu: the animated kid ordering a brownie and gleefully bouncing back to the street, the veteran regular who comes for the liquid narcotic not the atmosphere, the indecisive ones who probably spend most of their day stumped over some decision or other.

A couple tourists caught scent of the Internet and charged into the café I sat in the other day.

“Three dollars for 10 minutes? That’s highway robbery!” the guy exclaimed with an expression of horror. He fell into hushed debate with his girlfriend, weighing their hunger for email against their revulsion at being ripped off.

Appalled, the guy handed over the fee and seized a computer.

Once I watched the All-American family on vacation drift in. This particular family wouldn’t reach similar conclusions about the existence of gravity much less agree on a place to get a refreshment.

One sister fervently desired a smoothie, while her dad looked in dire need of some coffee. The younger brother wasn’t about to settle for a fruit drink when he knew there was a Dairy Queen in town, and the other brother was hell-bent on Cold Stone Creamery. All the while Mom was holding a fussy baby and probably wondering what possessed her to have so many offspring.

Now there are a number of visitors on the island who don’t speak English. I’m torn between chuckling and feeling sorry for them as they attempt to navigate through the thicket of interactive experiences they face on Maui.

Once I watched a couple from Eastern Europe who clearly wanted to order something, but their method of communicating that something was well beyond the cashier’s comprehension. I watched the plethora of options and choices—normally a plus—turn into a trap.

Using a combination of broken English and charade-style hand gestures, peppered with a little of their native language, the couple placed a truly theatrical order. They received what I believed to be blended caramel-coffee drinks. I’m not sure if that was their plan, but they looked relieved at having once again successfully finished the song and dance of ordering in a foreign country.

After all, we all need to feel loved. Cafés capitalize on this by marketing to each individual’s preferences. Your life may be full of frustrations and shortcomings, but we’ll tailor for you the beverage of your dreams! You want extra foam? No problem. Additional shot of espresso? Right on. You say jump and the barista asks how high, hot or on ice?

It’s all about gratification. And right now, I find watching all of you trying to place orders at cafes to be very gratifying indeed. MTW

Cassandra Fairall Bartender, Gaby’s Pizzeria in Lahaina Gaby’s was my hangout the first time I lived on Maui. When I came back to the island to visit, Gaby asked me if I wanted to work here. I moved back two weeks later.

I’ve been in the restaurant business since I was about 16 and I’ve worked everywhere from mom and pop shops to corporate chains. I like the mom and pop shops the best.

Gaby hires mainly females so we gather a male crowd. There are a lot of people who come in to play pool and sit at the bar. All the girls are really friendly with each other and with the customers so the environment feels really laid-back.

The restaurant changes from night to day.

During the daytime, it’s people on their lunch breaks and people coming out of the surf schools. During the night, it’s full of both local and visitors who just want to let loose in a comfortable and casual place. It’s unlike most restaurants you’ll find—especially on Maui.

The best part of my job is that I can be a smartass and not get fired. For the most part I can be my own boss and if I don’t want to serve someone I don’t have to. I don’t usually have that problem, though. We have a lot of really great regulars and that makes the job easier.

I have never worked for a better boss in my life. The workers are all friends and we have a lot of fun together. We are like a fun, dysfunctional family. It reminds me of home. MTW

Starts Sunday, at Ho’okipa Beach [SPORTS] Did you all know that Maui is considered the birthplace of kiteboarding? Oh Maui, the mother of so many natural wonders, how we love thee. Our trade winds and warm water make the North Shore one of the best places to kiteboard in the world, which is why Red Bull King of the Air competition will take place Oct. 9-16 at Ho’okipa Beach. This contest is blowing in the sport’s big guns from Tahiti, France, Mexico, Czech Republic and more, to contend for the $21,000 prize. Ah, the international language of MONEY! And with our gusts, and their gusto, it should be huge! Apparently they’ll be pulling all kinds of moves, known to the well-versed kiteboarders as kite loops, handle passes, board off’s and huge grabs, at heights of 40 to 60 feet. Most of my kite experiences took place as a kid and usually involved a tree, scissors and frustration. I’m very keen on seeing how these kings of air manage to control and harness wind to their own advantage. This competition marks the seventh and final year of the event, one last chance to see elite athletes take on our natural elements of wind and water. It will be a long day of sport and Red Bull will be there when you need it to give you that holy second wind. [MOLLY RETTIG]

Sound Tribe Thursday, 10 p.m. at Casanova; Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s [MUSIC] I’m a junkie for downbeat electronica, endlessly obsessing over Massive Attack, Thievery Coroporation and usually anything that says “chilledout” or “late-night” on the label. And certainly Sound Tribe Sector 9 fits the bill.

But their sound is definitely a more uplifting, positive electronica than the rest—a sort of melodic, soulful, exploratory, sophisticated and tranquil groove, along the same lines as Zero 7 and Tortoise.

But as much as I dig their studio stuff, I hear their live shows are where STS9 truly shine. I can hardly believe they’re coming to Maui with all their instruments, computers and candles but it’s true.

British Claymation geniuses Nick Park and Steve Box bring to life their best-loved characters Wallace (voiced by veteran actor Peter Sallis) and his faithful tonguetied dog Gromit in a nifty children’s movie filled with just the right amount of bawdy double entendres to make adults snicker.

The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit

Through a painstaking filming process that takes a full day to shoot at most two seconds of screen time, the filmmakers create a vibrant rural British community obsessed with growing giant vegetables for their annual fairground competition.

Wallace and Gromit run a brisk pest control business called “Anti-Pesto” by humanely capturing garden-ravaging bunnies with Wallace’s specially invented BunVac 6000 contraption that “sucks as well as blows.” But their Northern England clientele go wiggy when an enormous rabbit attacks during a harvest full moon to devour every gigantic vegetable in sight.

It’s “the world’s first vegetarian horror movie,” but there’s nothing scary about it.

Were-Rabbit follows animator Nick Park’s hugely entertaining Chicken Run (2000) with a determinedly unapologetic British brand of well-mannered humor. In the opening scenes we’re introduced to Wallace and Gromit as a couple of cohabiting pals whose work life is inextricably bound up with their meticulously planned home life. The two are automatically awakened and mechanically slid from their beds to a sliding board system that dresses them before depositing them into their special pest control truck with coffees in hand to answer their neighbor’s call to extricate the bunnies from her property.

There’s a Batman and Robin kind of appeal to their carefully designed operation and the audience is immediately submersed in a cheery world that is at once familiar and neighborly. Wallace, the irrepressible inventor, and his much smarter dog are an iconic duo you recognize even if you’re not familiar with their Oscar-winning short films The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave.

Wallace’s character trait of loving cheese beyond all reason finds Gromit acting as a helpful companion when he feeds Wallace a plate filled with nothing but vegetables. Little do we suspect that Wallace’s own desire to repress his addiction to fat-inducing cheese will have him inadvertently performing a

mechanical mind meld with a bunny after relieving a certain Lady Tottington (Helena Bonham Carter) of an extensive rabbit infestation on her grand estate.

Ralph Fiennes brilliantly voices Lady Tottington’s gun-loving toupee-wearing suitor Victor Quartermaine, whose jealousy of Wallace’s romantic chemistry with Lady T. contributes to the picture’s action packed finale that includes an hilarious World War Istyle dogfight between Gromit and Quatermaine’s bulldog.

Were-Rabbit took five years of meticulous work to create, and the final product is a lovingly rendered example of Plasticine animation that’s more satisfying than a CGI animated movie because you can sense the invisible human hands physically manipulating every expression on the irrepressible characters’ faces. The specifically British humor transcends a golden age of comedy that connects to our collective sub-conscious and unites several generations worth of ideas.

It’s a comic sensibility that kids naturally recognize and respond to for its innocently irreverent and eccentric qualities. When we see books like Brie Encounter, East of Edam and Fromage to Eternity on Wallace’s bookshelf, something inside just clicks. Besides all of that, it’s just a really damn cute movie. MTW

I seriously doubt I’m the first person who suggested those two get teamed up for a picture. 122 min. (AP) WAITING - (R) - Comedy - Taking a glance into the restaurant industry isn’t always pretty. Some people might be amazed by the conversations at the register and the actions behind the scenes. The employees of “Shenanigans,” a cheesy chain restaurant with equally cheesy policies, is staffed by the people who serve you every day. Go see this film because it’s filled with sexual tension and probably more than a couple of poop jokes, not to mention all the the funny (and slightly depressing) parallels to the average American’s everyday life. 93 min. (GP) WALLACE & GROMIT: CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT - (G) - Action-Adventure, Comedy, Animation – British animation master Nick Park’s brilliant Wallace & Gromit have finally made it to the big screen. In this adventure, cheese-loving, not-too-bright Wallace and his intellectual yet mute dog Gromit are running a pest control service that must do battle with a mysterious monster threatening to ruin the town’s annual Giant Vegetable Competion. 94 min. It can’t be too scary because it’s only rated PG13. But, I’m sure there will be scenes for us ladies to salivate over and witty lines to keep the public entertained. The new Tim Burton movie is finally here! It’s a new story with that similar feel of The Nightmare Before Christmas—death with a romantic twist. I can already see the limitless merchandise that will be available at Hot Topic by next week, at the latest. It’s stop animation, for crying out loud! Do you really need any more reasons to go see it?! 75 min. (HK) THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE - (PG13) Suspense/Horror - A 19-year-old college student has been officially recognized by the Catholic Church that she is possessed. As told in flashbacks—you’ll have to pay close attention—this film chronicles the real life, “haunting” trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl believed to be possessed and the laywer who takes on the task of defending him. Well, I guess that’s a little different from The Exorcist. 114 min. (Kimberly Welch) 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN - (R) - Comedy - This is one of those pictures in which the title pretty much tells you everything you need to know. Steve Carell, The Daily Show’s funniest correspondent, stars in this twist on the old, well-told story of the guy whose friends attempt to help into the sack. If this works, it’ll be because Carell is his usually hilarious self and the producers didn’t puss out and try to make this a PG-13 flick. 116 min. (AP) FLIGHT PLAN - (PG13) - Action, Thriller - Forty thousand feet above earth Kyle (Jodie Foster) and her daughter are among many passengers flying for the first time in one of the world’s first double-decker airplanes. Mid-flight, Kyle returns to her seat after a short absence to find that her child is nowhere to be found.

Astonishingly, after pleading with the staff for help, she is confronted with the fact that there is no record of her daughter ever being on the flight. At this Kyle must wonder if she has lost her mind or if there’s some sort of conspiracy against her. 120 min. (GP) INTO THE BLUE - (PG13) - Action, Thriller - When four hot young divers (including Jessica Alba and Paul Walker) discover a shipwreck containing millions in gold, they assume everything will be dandy. But nearby, a sunken plane full of illegal cargo threatens to interfere with their capture of the riches. Their plan proves hazardous when smugglers invade the area to recover their missing plane. Running around wild in their bathing suits, they must work together to escape disaster. 110 min. (GP) JUST LIKE HEAVEN - (PG13) - Romantic Comedy Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) and Mark Ruffalo (13 Going on 30) meet under strange circumstances; they both think the same apartment is theirs. Ruffalo’s character has just moved in and Witherspoon’s character thinks the place is still hers. Maybe it’s the car accident she gets into that messes with her memory. Or, could she be an attractive and sweet ghost that steals the heart of the new tenant? Ah, but will their love be enough to keep them together even though he’s still alive? Oh, the obstacles! Get the tissues. 95 min. (HK) LORD OF WAR - (R) - Action-Adventure, Drama Nicholas Cage plays an international arms dealer who runs guns to wars all over the world even as an Interpol agent (Ethan Hawke) chases him down but then suddenly he has pangs of conscience when he meets some chick played by Bridget Moynahan. Somehow this goes on for 122 minutes. (AP) THE MAN - (PG13) - Action Comedy - It’s time for another odd couple comedic crime adventure! This one’s with Samuel L. (Samantha Campos) MARCH OF THE PENGUINS - (G) - This little documentary is going to make you laugh and cry. It’s amazing how easy it is to relate to the flightless birds. Aren’t they the only animals that mate for life? It seems to me they’re more faithful than humans. (I’m not bitter!) It’s adorable.

It’s real. It’s narrated by Morgan Freeman. It follows a flock for one year, and more specifically one couple, to see how they travel across the Antarctic. 84 min. (HK) OLIVER TWIST - (PG13) - Drama - This timless classic by Roman Polanski, tells a story of an orphan named Oliver Twist. He is forced to live in a workhouse, run by the awful Mr. Bumble (Ben Kingsley), who cheats the boys of their meager rations. Desperate yet determined, Oliver makes his escape to the streets of London. Penniless and alone, he is lured into a world of crime by the sinister Fagin, who is the mastermind of a gang of pint-sized pickpockets. Sounds like they needed a skatepark in their ‘hood. 110 min. (KW) ROLL BOUNCE - (PG13) - Comedy - X (Bow Wow) and his rollerskating posse ruled the skating rink supreme.

But, of course, the doors to the local skating rink close, so what is little X to do but cruise to the uptown’s Sweetwater Roller Rink. This roller boogie-ing place has the works: beautiful girls and over-the-top skaters. So X and his homies prepare for the Roller Jam skate-off with none other than the Sweetwater Crew. 112 min. (KW) SERENITY - (PG13) - Action-Adventure, Sci-Fi - Think Star Wars, except there aren’t any big stars or complex storylines and everyone’s trying to act like Han Solo. It didn’t work as the Sci-Fi Channel serie Firefly, so there’s obviously every reason to believe it will work as a feature film! Anyway, the movie’s about a rough-andtumble interstellar freighter captain who navigates his way through a giant space war and ends up protecting a psychic girl from the clutches of the all-powerful Universal Alliance. Stars a bunch of unknowns and that one Baldwin brother who never seems to do anything good. 119 min. (AP) AN UNFINISHED LIFE - (PG13) - Drama - Jennifer Lopez plays a woman who escapes her abusive boyfriend, and along with her daughter, goes go live with her estranged father (Robert Redford), who is tending to his friend (Morgan Freeman) after a severe bear attack. Meet the characters of Pat Masumoto’s latest play within a play Pat Masumoto is a prolific Wailuku artist with a wicked sense of humor. She opened Gallerie Ha, a showcase for local art including her own, and began conducting laugh workshops. She’s a staunch advocate for women’s rights, as well as a passionate poet and playwright.

In 2002, she wrote her first comedic drama, Mad Cloak, about a group of friends dealing with domestic abuse. Now Masumoto is introducing her second play, Inside Out, about a group of friends dealing with domestic abuse. Except this time, the comedy comes from watching actors perform as actors rehearsing a play called Inside the Cloak about friends dealing with abuse. The drama comes from trying to figure out how that actually works.

Inside Out Thursday through Saturday, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Rated R for mature content. Tickets: $18. For info, call 242-SHOW.

Anyway, to help you wrap your head around the central storyline—the play within a play—I got the lowdown from the actors, in character, as they describe their roles in the story.

AL, THE JOURNALIST (played by Jerry Eiting) My name is Al Razzo—that’s R-A-Z-Z-O. It means “rockin’” in Italian! I live in Ka’anapali and I’m a syndicated columnist. I’m articulate, political—women adore me. My mother was a large Italian woman, a control freak who kept her thumb on me. I would try to do things in life, have other careers—she didn’t like my stories. But she gave me the perspective I needed with my writing style: aggressive, bawdy and very opinionated. She kept me in a box and I bounced off the four walls of the box, which kept me tightly wound up. I was always in fights as a kid. She beat me with a horsewhip when I didn’t behave, when I didn’t do things her way.

I never could fight back. When I got the opportunity to leave, I did and never looked back.

JILLIAN, THE ARTIST (played by Tiana Clark) I’m a young artist who has made a name for myself on Maui, partially with the help of my famous local reporter boyfriend Al. Problem is, he’s abusive. It took me a long time to realize I didn’t need him in my life. Once I found strength, I got him out. Thankfully, I have good friends and we stuck together.

BELLA, THE SONGSTRESS (played by Camille Romero) I’m a jazz singer—sophisticated, spoiled and definitely used to having my way. I’m really after

Al—I think he’s sexy. His media connections are great. I wanna be out there, I wanna be known and he’s the perfect person for that. Other people have problems handling his temper. I don’t think that’s going to be a problem for me.

ADAM, THE DRUMMER (played by Michael Burke) I’m Bella’s boyfriend. We have a pretty comfortable relationship, slightly routine—it’s pretty good. We’re both artists. I’m her shadow; I back her up with drums while she sings. But lately, my relationship with Bella is getting strained. She has the hots for Al and is taking me for granted. Even though I don’t come out and tell her, I try to express that in my drumming. Anyway, I’ve been giving Jill drum lessons. We get along pretty well. I’m also good friends with Kawika—we talk story all the time.

Actually, he does most of the talking.

KAWIKA, THE ACTOR (played by Reid Yamamoto) Well, I guess I’m a local improv actor. But I’m kinda the conscience of everyone. After the scenes, I recap in a sentence or a few words what they’re thinking and feeling—especially Al needs my help. He has problems and is hurting my friends. I don’t like conflict. I just want everyone to get along. Sometimes it gets too much and I get frustrated. I just want the world happy so we can all be happy.

RHONDA, THE PLAYWRIGHT (played by Julie Kawamura) It’s been interesting working with these people. All the actors and actresses are nice—I don’t wanna say anything bad about them! Cecil is such a good director but sometimes he’s scary. I watch him and he gets the actors to really see my characters.

This is my first play and it’s exciting to see it come to life. I wrote the screenplay because I had a friend who was abused. I guess I saw what a hard time she had and I thought it was really important for people to see they’re not alone.

Inside the Cloak is a story about transformation and control. The main character is Al Razzo.

People consider him the anti-hero but he’s really an everyman. He transforms from a brutal, egotistical bastard to a reticent and reformed man.

This play is about his journey. The actors are a challenge, especially Kawika. Rhonda is a, uh, mediocre playwright. But I’m confident that with just the right amount of pressure from me,

Spotlight on Lisa Teichner Inside Out director Lisa Teichner’s creative edge is making a dynamic difference in Maui’s theatre community. She’s Maui OnStage as Consulting Artistic Director and now most recently joined Maui Academy of Performing Arts as Assistant Artistic Director alongside Olivia Mora.

“It’s a dream job,” Teichner says. “I get to do what I love and get paid for it!”

Teichner has directed and produced theater in Los Angeles for the last 10 years as well as co-founded two LA theater companies. Three years ago Maui OnStage offered her their Artistic Director position. Accepting the post was easy, especially when she discovered a nearby jujitsu academy.

“Life in a way is like jujitsu—you take the energy that is given—not fighting it and use it for an opportunity that is given to you,” she says of her hobby. “The more you expose yourself to different situations the more well rounded you become.”

And the theater?

“Acting forces you to look at something from a different perspective and allows you to expand yourself,” she says. “The better I am as an actor the better I can relate as a director.”

Teichner is currently directing Inside Out , touring for The Red Rose with MAPA’s performance troupe at different schools across the islands and performing in MAPA’s production of Scrooge starting Nov. 25.

The sequence near the end where mobster Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) is fumbling around with his family, getting chased by a mysterious helicopter and trying to manage his drug business all while making spaghetti sauce has always made me hungry. It’s making me hungry right now just thinking about it. It’s a delicious scene—here’s a guy, a career criminal, really, who lives very well off but right on the edge, and his whole empire is crashing down on top of while he’s screwing around with something as mediocre as marinara, which by the way looked really, really good. I love food. Oh! How I love food! And I love movies. And I love watching people fall in lust, fall in love, get their heart stomped on, suffer family dysfunction, and cook up some mean culinary concoctions, all while speaking Spanish, too. So anytime I can combine my faves into a hybrid that makes me love the components even more, the better! There’s a lot going on but mainly, the story revolves around a young woman who discovers that her repressed passions make the best spice in her cooking. This flick is a sumptuous feast for the eyes; the cinematography is so sensual you can practically smell the aromas of sex and chipotle. Que delicioso! I’ll take a second helping, please. HOOK I know it’s kind of weird, but the scene where Robin Williams has his first night back in Never Neverland and he and the Lost Boys all sit around the table, gets my tummy grumbling. First there are just empty dishes, but when they all pretend to get into a food fight, the food magically appears. There are all sorts of weird, brightly colored foods, but it all looks tasty. Actually, most of it resembles buttercream frosting, which is one of the best things ever! Hence, the dinner spread appeals to me. And yeah, now I’m hungry, too. (Heidi King)
