Death by Snorkeling? Don’t know if you noticed, but death surrounds us. Newspaper stories say traffic deaths are at their highest rate since 1990. Television bombards us with images of people being shot, mutilated or just blown apart in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan. A commercial airliner crashes in Ukraine, killing 170. A coalmine collapses in West Virginia, snuffing out a dozen miners. No matter what we do, it seems we risk violent, bloody death every time we fly, drive, walk or snorkel. Wait a second—snorkeling can get you killed? Can it ever: check over these accounts, drawn from the archives of The Maui News… Aug. 20, 2006: Police find Joseph Dworak, 52, of McLean, Virginia, floating in the water 400 feet off the Ka`anapali Shores resort. The cause of death is pending. Aug. 5, 2006: Walter Seifert, 74, of California collapsed aboard a tour boat immediately after snorkeling in

the waters just off Molokini. After CPR failed to revive him at the Kihei boat ramp, paramedics took him to Maui Memorial, where doctors pronounced him dead. May 3, 2006: Family members find Paul Slayton, 54, of Sacramento, California, floating dead off Koki Beach after he went snorkeling with them. Feb. 23, 2006: At approximately 3 p.m., Anthony Moore, 45, of San Jose, California, heads into the water by himself at Makena Landing. A Maui Dive Shop boat crew and rescuers eventually find his body the next day off Five Graves. Though sharks have severely mauled the body, Maui County coroner Dr. Anthony Manoukian concludes that Moore likely died from a heart attack or drowning long before the sharks got to him. Feb. 22, 2006: Shrivindu Mehta, 40, of New York City collapses on Wailea Beach after he’s helped to shore. His wife speculates that he swallowed a lot of seawater

We’re the “we’re weird, we actually love doing taxes” folks, so if there’s anyway humanely possible to make this a pleasant experience, it’s with us. And now that our tax season is finally over this is the best time of the year for us to help you with your little problem. Start soon though. We don’t want to scare you but... it can take months to gather lost/missing information, prepare returns, wait for IRS assessment, request penalty abatement, prepare an offer in compromise, and all the other miriad steps necessary before your problem is resolved for the least amount possible.

Many thanks to you and your buddies for throwing stuff at strangers from your balcony on South Kihei Road. I walk by every day, you know. The latest projectile seemed to be a large snowball, though it was probably just shave ice that you compacted. It missed my head by about a foot, you idiot. From your height on the third or fourth floor, it had plenty of momentum and mass to do real damage. If it had whacked me in the head, I would

and

because it’s doubtful someone as stupid as you understands them.

LC Watch Flip Side Fans of this column know that we really enjoy poking fun at the Maui County Department of Liquor Control. It’s hard not to find humor in their requirement that nightclubs restrict dancing to a taped-off zone or that LC inspectors’ panties get ruffled when they find employees using their familiar as opposed to their given names on timesheets, to say nothing of the law requiring establishments to card every single patron who wants to buy alcohol.

But every now then, something happens that makes even us pause and—dare I say it—sympathize with the lowly liquor inspector. Recently we came across an underage girl who was using a fake ID to try to get into bars. Fake IDs are an old, old method of getting booze—at least as old as legit IDs. And what a fake ID she was using—let’s just say it wasn’t your typical Hawai`i driver’s license. First off, it was an international driving license, issued by the United Nations. Second, it was for a woman in her thirties. Third, it was for an adult woman who didn’t look anything like the underage girl. Fourth, it expired more than a year ago. And

fifth, its edges were badly frayed and about a quarter of the laminated plastic had peeled away. Now this girl tells us—and we have no reason not to believe her—that she used this ID to get her into three out of four bars in the Kihei area. Two let her in outright, one place rejected it because of the frayed edges and another looked at first to deny her entry. “What’s your birthday?” the doorman asked her, apparently scrutinizing the card. “Uhhh… Feb. 28?” she said. It wasn’t, but I guess it was close enough because the doorman let her in. MTW

Well, it’s true. That and the fact that you can get good Mexican food on Maui. Is Maui going to have an infrastructure-related disaster very soon? Well, I’m a hopeful person. I think that the business cycle will slow and development won’t be so rampant. You also need to get the right people on the County Council who take things seriously—there are some good candidates there. In order to avoid a disaster, those two things need to happen. And I think they will. MTW

The recent deal between the state and Young Brothers over “less than container load” shipping at Kahului Harbor is great news for the proposed Superferry and thus great news for Maui Land & Pine, one of its principle financial backers. The Maui News pummeled the proposed high-speed auto ferry line for weeks with a series of articles on how much space the big boats would take at the harbor—space Young Brothers was using for packing containers. Opposition built against the project based on the idea that the state Department of Transportation was just ramming their ferry—currently spending huge money on radio and newspaper ads—into our harbor without any planning or environmental assessment. But now the deal, which looks like it will hold, sinks a sizeable chunk of that opposition. MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle says on her official campaign website (www.lindalingle.com) about her education accomplishments: “We have made great strides in… improved education starting at the pre-school level.”

What she didn’t say: The latest Hawai`i State Assessment scores show about 34 percent of our public schools meet reading and math goals as laid out in the federal No Child Left Behind guidelines. This is, according to the Aug. 22, 2006 Honolulu Advertiser, pretty much where the state was last year. Of course, there has been some improvement: 43 percent of third-graders now meet or exceed reading minimums, compared to 31 percent last year, while 40 percent of those same kids are at or above grade level in math, which is remarkably better than the 18 percent figure from 2005. Whether such results meet the criteria of “great strides” will be up to the voters to decide.

MAUICOUNTY So now Upcountry is running out of water. Something about a drier than usual summer combined with increased usage, according to today’s Maui News. Hmm… more people moving to Maui every day, more building going on—sure sounds like an increase in water usage to me. In fact, things are so bad that county water supply director George Tengan says his office is asking that Upcountry residents voluntarily cut back their water usage or else face potential mandatory cuts further down the road. West Maui’s is having a dry summer, too, though Tengan stopped short in The Maui News article of saying they were facing possible conservation measures. This is all fine and perfectly acceptable—if you believe that the last thing the county should do right now is stop approving new timeshare, condominium, hotel, residential and commercial development. Whoever said new development needs water?

THURSDAY, Aug. 24 Great news, everyone! We’ve found the solution to that horrible ridiculous traffic jam that runs from the Westside to Central Maui! There’s no need ever again to sit and stew in your car for an hour or more as you slowly creep over the Pali. And we all have Island Air to thank. “We understand the difficulty of driving between West Maui and the rest of the island, and we strongly support the Lahaina Bypass Now Committee,” said Island Air Chief Operating Officer Les Murashige in a company press release. “We will continue doing our part to improve connections between Hawai`i’s communities.” You see, starting Sept. 5 the carrier will offer a direct, non-stop daily flight from Kapalua Airport to Kahului Airport. And this will save us all… wait a sec—it’s headed the wrong way! You want to save on

traffic, Murashige, then you need to run planes from Kahului to Kapalua—and they shouldn’t be those little eggbeater prop jobs, either. I want to see Boeing 747s taking off every 15 minutes all morning, then reversing the flights from Kapalua to Kahului during the early evening hours. Maybe then you’ll be able to “improve connections,” but anything less than that just smacks of a publicity stunt.

FRIDAY, Aug. 25 Speaking of big deals, the fact that 12 people are running for the 2nd Congressional District seat is a very big deal, though mostly for the voters. The fact that voters have a rich plethora of talent to choose from to replace Democratic Congressman Ed Case gives us reporters hives. Colleen Hanabusa, Matt Matsunaga, Gary Hooser, Brian Schatz, Mazie Hirono, Clayton Hee and Ron Menor are all progressive, experienced, pro-environment, anti-Iraq War candidates who would make fine congressional representatives—far preferable to Case, in fact. This is a good thing: democracy should be about multitudes of choices over pre-packaged, pre-digested either/or votes. But for reporters, who always prefer simple two-person races to immensely complicated dozen-candidate free-for-alls, having so many names and agendas running around is confusing and tough. The Maui News has done minimal coverage of the race so far, and today the Honolulu Advertiser weighed in with a big story lamenting the difficulties of the race— specifically, how no one candidate has broken away from the pack or even attacked one or more of the others. “The problem with this kind of collegial campaign is it makes it difficult to rise above others with similar views and political experience,” wrote Advertiser Government Writer Treena Shapiro, who also managed to get 1st District Congressman Neil Abercrombie to agree, adding that the race “doesn’t make for great TV.” Wow, 2nd District voters are faced with a more than half a

Welfare?” The Advertiser’s reporting today that the cruise line has just booked a deal with the state Department of Education to pipe hundreds of Maui school kids aboard its vessels. Something about the cruise line getting a line on recruiting future employees while the students learn… about… high-priced vacations? Anyway, NCL is stoked. What’s next, a cruise line reality show? Hey… Speaking of big wastes of time, looks like the Maui County Council really got its money’s worth when it knocked two whole cents off the county gasoline tax six weeks ago. In a surprise of the ages, it doesn’t seem that retail gas stations passed on any of those tax cut savings onto consumers, so says today’s Maui News. “If that impact hasn’t happened, we’ve defeated the purpose and basically lost revenues,” Councilmember and mayoral candidate Charmaine Tavares says in the story. Oh, but it’s worse that that: not only did the council’s tax cut apparently rob its Highway Fund of about $1.3 million a year, but it also gave current Mayor Alan Arakawa a chance to tell the News that the whole tax cut thing was not only too small for consumers to notice in the first place, but was also a little more than “an election-year cut.”

TUESDAY, Aug. 29 dozen good choices for their congressional representative: what a tragedy that they’ll have to do a little research and find out which one they like best.

SATURDAY, Aug. 26 How come our governor’s race can’t be like that?

SUNDAY, Aug. 27 Mmm… humidity.

MONDAY, Aug. 28 Score one for Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) in that old game of “Which Big Company Gets the Best Corporate

You know what’s brave? Ed Case’s attack ads bashing Daniel Akaka with Congress.org’s “Power Rankings” classifying him as the 71st most powerful U.S. Senator (out of 100) when those very same rankings list Case as the 410th most powerful U.S. House member (out of 435). For those of you who love math, this means Akaka is more powerful than 29 percent of the Senate while Case outranks just six percent of the House. That’s a hell of a campaign tactic. HIS NAME WOULD BE ‘MOODIE’

Houdini—a 12-foot-long Burmese python in Ketchum, Idaho, that accidentally swallowed a large electric blanket in July and electrical cord, after pulling it from the wall. Veterinary surgeons managed to remove the whole thing, leaving Houdini in good condition; Crash—a pelican that smashed into a car in Malibu, Calif., and had undergone a month’s rehabilitation only, when finally released in July, to collide beak-first with some rocks, before successfully lifting off. Wildlife officials said Crash may have been disoriented from eating toxic algae; Barney—a Doberman pinscher guarding a children’s museum near Wells, England who lost control and chewed up almost $1 million worth of rare teddy bears in August, including one once belonging to Elvis Presley.

CAN’T POSSIBLY BE TRUE

FETISHES ON PARADE

An analysis of government records by The Washington Post revealed in July that a federal agriculture subsidy program to compensate farmers for market-losing crops has evolved, through regulatory interpretation and lax enforcement, into a program that since 2000 has paid $1.3 billion to people who don’t even farm at all. Although pre-tax income of all farming was a near-record $72 billion in 2005, federal subsidies actually grew to $25 billion, a sum considerably more than that paid to families receiving welfare.

Police in Groningen, Netherlands, announced that a 40-year-old man whom they had previously counseled had once again resumed his compulsion to rummage through garbage seeking discarded tampons and leaving notes for the discarders (July). And Paul Zakszewski, 54, was arrested in Salem, Mass., for having allegedly made audio recordings from women’s restroom stalls (July).

In June, the D.C. inspector general reported that the mugging death of a former New York Times reporter involved “complacency and indifference” by almost all police and rescue personnel involved, from ambulance crew to investigating officers to hospital doctors, resulting in the victim, who was severely beaten, being treated merely as a street drunk.

LEAST COMPETENT ANIMALS

A former police official and current aggressive, respected Wellington, New Zealand, litigator, Rob Moodie, 67, said in July that he is tired of the old-boy network of male lawyers and judges, and that henceforth he will show his disdain by dressing in women’s clothes in court. The worse the “corruption” he senses, the frillier will be his outfits, said the married father of three, who also said he happens to like women’s clothes, but that it took the pervasive male courthouse culture to bring that into the open. Moodie said already he has enjoyed giving “a flash of lace at the urinal” but said he would keep his trademark moustache.

SCHOOL DAZE At commencement this year at Gallatin High School in Nashville, Tenn., the principal had the valedictorian arrested for trying to make a speech that was reserved for the senior class president. And The Buffalo News in New York reported skyrocketing absentee rates at local high schools this spring because of a new district policy that the lowest possible semester grade would be 50, even for those missing every class—meaning that a grade as low as 80 for one semester could be averaged with a no-show 50 to reach the minimum-passing grade of 65. For such a small island, Maui sure has a lot of restaurants. A LOT of restaurants, of all shapes, sizes, locations and cuisines. Want Mexican food? There’s three or four great places to choose from. Got a hankering for one of those Pacific Rim dishes that looks like a work of art? More than a dozen choices tempt you. Want escargot at a fancy French joint? A heaping plate of loco moco from a quiet lunch counter? A vegetarian taco loaded with fake ground beef? Check, check and check. Maui’s got restaurants for every region, taste and bank account balance, which leaves just one question: where do you go? To help you out, we asked some of the island’s more prominent kama`aina—musicians, community leaders, artists and the guy who runs the local prison—where they go when they don’t want to mess around in the kitchen. Their answers should surprise you and, hopefully, make you hungry. As an added bonus, we’ve added some of the island’s best kama`aina halfprice deals to our already comprehensive dining listings. Enjoy! Contributors: Samantha Campos, Anthony Pignataro and Jen Russo

I like to go to Kihei Caffé. They open at five in the morning and stay open until two in the afternoon. They have a great hamburger and great breakfast, as well as great service and a great staff. I think they were voted Best Breakfast on the island. My favorite is the chorizo con huevos. I go there probably two to three times a week—definitely Sunday morning, then maybe one other time a week. I like Koho’s, too. I like the food and the friendly service. Koho’s is where I learned to eat French fries with mayonnaise, local style. They have a great chicken sandwich, too. It was one of the first places I went to when I came to Maui.

great food for the family. For date nights we like to go to Roy’s. Whether we are dining or just have time for appetizers they have the best cuisine. They used to have an escargot with polenta on the menu, but you can still ask for it. It has the most amazing flavor. I love their fish and all their preparations. I also take the family to dinner at Outback. They have tremendous portions for the price, and great food.

I love to eat at this place called Serpico in Pukalani. It’s an Italian restaurant run by a guy named Hatch [Clarke, along with Miriam Clarke, from Allenhurst, New Jersey] who makes his own pizza dough, stromboli, anything Italian you want. They’ve got subs, eggplant parmesan, chicken parmesan— Philly cheese steaks, too. My favorite is the white pizza made with ricotta, mozzarella, roasted garlic and spinach. Me and my girlfriend go there once a week at least. It’s just a real cool, laidback place where we can go and relax. A real momand-pop operation.

My favorite place is Fresh Mint. It’s a place where I bring relatives, and even the meat and potatoes people love the food there. I like the spicy lemongrass soup and the ginger beef. Everything is really fresh and only prepared once you order it, but I like most the fact that no animals suffered in making the meal. My friends who eat meat really think the fish is delicious. I’ve been going there ever since it opened and I’m sure disappointed the one in Kahului closed. I like Polli’s, too, because anything on the menu can be made vegetarian. They can put the fake ground beef in any of the burritos, tacos, etc. They’re really accommodating there. And Moana Café is pretty good. I went there last week. They had a special of red Thai noodles that was really good, and they said they were going to add it to their regular menu.

I’m gonna have to cast my vote for Fresh Mint, the vegetarian Vietnamese place. It’s just very healthy, very flavorful—a very satisfying meal. It’s everything food should be. And the folks that work there are very nice. I like the Pho, Vietnamese noodle soup, but any of the entrees are good. It’s hard to pick a favorite. I try to go through the whole menu, get something new every time, and eventually try everything. Oh, and there are desserts, too! They have this mango tapioca—it’s non-dairy and it’s so good.

But I liked going to that place that’s on the right as you drive into Wailuku—Saigon Cafe. What I basically do is go to Mana Foods and get deli takeout. I get the shoyu chicken. I used to go to Vasi’s and get the pizza, which is incredible. Vasi’s has this really yeasty crust that is just fantastic. Veg Out in Haiku is great, too.

Because I live on this side, I like to go to Jacques for sushi and salad, and Café Des Amis for the Mediterranean platter. I eat out as often as possible— in general, about three times a week. If I’m just getting something to go, I’ll pick up something from Down to Earth. But I will drive all the way to Wailuku to get a wet burrito at Fiesta Time. I can’t wait until they open one in Paia.

Their macadamia nut crusted mahi or ahi— everything they’ve got it is great. And their bread—the corn rolls! Barry and I call it soul food. And in Paia, we love Moana Café. Their fish preparations are really great. The ahi wrap with sweet potatoes is my favorite for lunch. Oh, and last night we were there and I had the Veggie Tower with roasted veggies— it was terrific. For lunch we like to go to Café Mambo—our sons Kiva and Tide kept saying we had to go and now we love it. For $7, you can get a fresh fish sandwich with salad or French fries! DANIEL BERGAN Membership Sales Director, Maui Chamber of Commerce I like to eat at the Maui Brewing Co. because they have great food and good service. I go to Chez Paul’s—the food is awesome. You get treated very well there in an intimate setting with rich French cuisine. I like Kimo’s, too. It’s fun, it’s been around forever and their excellent food is consistent. For lunch I like to go to Food for the Soul in Wailuku Industrial. They have soups, salads, sandwiches. I don’t even know how to describe it: the food is really fresh. I love their killer Portuguese bean soup.

You called the wrong person: I very seldom eat out. When I do go out, I like Buzz’s Wharf. They have a shrimp dish that I always order. I think the Hali`imaile General Store is fantastic, but I have to watch what I eat because I have food allergies. There’s this little obscure place in Pukalani that serves the best Mexican food on the island— Maui’s Best Tamales I think they’re called. I’m from L.A., you see, so Mexican food to me is a way of life. If I have to go out somewhere, that’s my favorite place. There’s also this obscure place that hardly anyone knows about in the Iao Valley, the Hali`imaile General Store Nature Café in what used to be the hotel. All they sell is sandwiches and salads. It’s a very nice place to be quiet and talk with a friend.

shoyu chicken, the black bean chicken. Pho Mai in Lahaina Center has fantastic food, fresh ingredients, an extensive Vietnamese menu and an extensive vegetarian menu. I love the curried shrimp the best. I also love the vegetarian won ton soup because it’s perfect when I want something light to eat. Fresh ingredients. Overall, I enjoy eating at and supporting small, casual, unpretentious mom and pop restaurants.

Kahuna Kabobs knows how to cook! Always juicy, those kabobs—and always consistently good. The food is simple, but so well done. As far as food in town, normally my wife and I just order takeout. We live in Wailuku, and we order from places that are centrally located. Just off the top of my head, Saigon Café is really good. I really like their crispy shrimp. I get my local food from Sam Sato’s and Nazo’s. Oh, and I can’t leave out Da Kitchen in Kahului. I think it’s good because there are always leftovers. [MUSIC] Fish Out of Water is a California-based band that fuses rock, funk, reggae and hip-hop in a style they call “RoPhunk RaeHop,” claiming to be influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Beastie Boys and Stevie Winwood, and who are also given to wearing afro wigs, red boxers and long john underwear on their heads, sharing mass amounts of microwave popcorn with their audience, and other such malarkey. But most importantly, Fish Out of Water is apparently a funkingroovin’ jam band that’ll get you dancing and so for that, we salute them. For more info, visit www.fowhq.com or myspace.com/fow.

[DEMONSTRATION] The campaign to get all the island’s commercial snorkel and tour boats to stop dumping raw sewage into Hawaiian waters is progressing pretty steadily. According to the group Pump Don’t Dump, Aloha Blue Charters’ Hokua boat recently began using pumping facilities when it gets into port. But the group says there are still five boats out there still dumping waste. Some people still aren’t getting the word that human waste doesn’t belong in the ocean. FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Pedal to the Metal or Die Jason Statham pursues action for action’s sake With an abbreviated and sped up story informed by Rudolph Mate’s 1949 film noir classic D.O.A., Crank is a hard R-rated chase-and-smash movie fixed around Euro action movie magnet Jason Statham (The Transporter) as Chev Chelios, an illfated freelance hit man. Chev awakens to find that he has been given a poisonous “Beijing Cocktail” the night before, by Los Angeles criminal kingpin Verona (Jose Pablo Cantillo), that will kill him if he lets his adrenal gland slow down.

Crank

★★★★★ Rated R / 83 mins.

With only one hour to live regardless of how amped up he can keep himself, Chev keeps his adrenaline pumping in order to hunt down the cocky Verona while finishing off a prior hit assignment against crime honcho Don Kim (Keone Young). Crank noticeably lacks Jason Statham’s signature martial arts moves in favor of vehicle-fueled sequences to keep the audience’s pulse racing. Statham hits his stride since debuting in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and his work here carries a heretofore unseen comic sensibility. Writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor implement the

wealth of mutual experience they gained making digitally shot television commercials to create an irreverent action picture that plays like a big screen version of the video game Grand Theft Auto with offbeat characters doing shocking things. Amy Smart (Starship Troopers) especially adds profane pizzazz as Chev’s loopy but supportive girlfriend Eve. Eve remains sympathetic to Chev’s peculiar plight even after discovering in the final hour of his life that he is in fact a hired killer and not the video game programmer he claimed to be in the past. If Chev needs an energy boost to stay alive while driving a car, Eve is happy to aid his cause with her own saliva. When Chev needs a little pick-me-up while running through Chinatown in an open-backed hospital gown, Eve takes one for the team in front of hundreds of bystanders to emphasize her devotion and increase Chev’s heart rate. The unpretentious romantic interplay between the lovers provides a humanistic shelter from Chev’s hyper-kinetic movement. Country musician Dwight Yoakam does a respectable job as Chev’s quirky oncall medical adviser Doc Miles whose plainspoken advice provides essential exposition to the bare bones story line. For all of his action movie idol status, Jason Statham flirts with the outré ridiculousness built into the script for Crank. You can see him contemplating putting his tongue in his cheek even if he never breaks character to actually do it. Crank is a politically incorrect black comedy that glorifies adrenaline in the same way that

Whaddya mean you’re out of Red Bull?!

practitioners of extreme sports seek out life threatening situations to send the selfproduced chemical through their bodies. It’s a mocking satire of America’s sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll culture mirrored with its proclivity for a combat mentality of revenge, desperation and

death. On a certain level Jason Statham has created his own genre of action movie. He’s shallow, brittle and recklessly graceful, and consequently represents a quality of youth that isn’t yet willing to let the mind do the work instead of the body. MTW

(AP) MATERIAL GIRLS - (PG) - Comedy, Drama - Two sisters, heiresses to a huge cosmetic company, find that they may be out of their fortune (even homeless!) when a scandal is revealed. Yeah right, they’re going to solve the problem and become better people. I’m already writing a screenplay about what would really happen. 100 min. (HK) MIAMI VICE - (R) - Action, Crime, Drama - The only thing this Michael Mann-directed flick shares with the kitschy 1980’s TV show of the same name is, well, the name. Hawaiians Gone Wild! Moving forward with Henry Kapono In the early 1970’s, Henry Kapono played in the popular duo Cecilio & Kapono. At the time, C&K set a precedent for contemporary Hawaiian music. After eight highly successful albums together, Kapono went solo and produced 12 more, eventually increasing his Na Hoku Hanohano award count to nine. But Kapono is not done setting precedents.

Henry Kapono Friday, Sept. 8, at Taste of Lahaina. Admission: $5. His latest album, Wild Hawaiian, released just a couple months ago, has been getting tons of media and public attention for its bold, edgy rock twist—all in Hawaiian language—on traditional Hawaiian songs. We recently talked to Kapono by phone about it. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: What does it mean to be a “Wild Hawaiian?” HENRY KAPONO: It’s just about trying to go beyond yourself, not getting stuck in everyday life— to go towards what you believe in. At least for me, it really means to get out of myself and move forward.

So that really could apply to the music on this album, as well, in the sense that it feels more “free,” creatively. Exactly. “Free” is a good word for it. It frees you up from a lot of things that hold you back. Once you realize it’s all forward motion, it’s the right thing to do and the right place to go.

Your album is being touted as part of the latest wave of new Hawaiian music. How do you define this new sound?

I termed it more alter-native. It’s a cultural thing. It has rock, pop—mostly those elements.

Who were some of your musical influences for this particular album? Well, obviously Jimi Hendrix. And Sting, Green Day…

Excuse me—did you just say Green Day? [Laughs] Yeah. I just really liked the sound and the attitude of American Idiot. You know, right from the beginning, it really grabs you. And I didn’t realize it, but it’s a concept album also. So this is what I wanted to sound like, and what I wanted to do.

And yet you fuse those contemporary elements with traditional, like Hawaiian language and stories about Hawaiian chiefs and stuff. It’s a forward movement—bringing the past back and moving it forward. Because if it gets lost, all we have left is books. For this album, I wanted to get people to dance, and to sing along. But I also wanted to be celebrating a culture. That way we get more people interested. So we’re setting a new groove movement—a groovement.

How did you feel when you first debuted this new sound? Were you worried about your older fans’ reactions? I was excited. It was received really well. A lot of people didn’t know what to expect, but it was entertaining, fun and positive. Everyone was expecting the standard Henry Kapono but we just tried to move that forward. I don’t always love what I’ve done, and I find that more people out there are looking for something new. Everyone gets put into a box and I’m putting myself into a new box, in order to reach more people. Whereas the

music before was about having fun, this goes a little beyond that. There’s an importance to it.

A lot of the songs on this album focus on Hawaiian pride—love for the land, people and culture of Hawai`i—ending with a very poignant rendition of “Ke Aloha O Ka Haku—Queen’s Prayer.” Is this album a reaction to current issues of overdevelopment, and sovereignty? I really wasn’t thinking about that. The whole album, without even knowing I was doing—these are songs I loved as a kid—I realize is about my life, growing up and who I am, and what I believe in. As for the “Queen’s Prayer,” I think what [Queen Lili`uokalani] was saying—things happened in the past, and we should step away from that and make changes as we move forward. We can put ourselves in a position where we can educate ourselves, do something and make a difference. MTW

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Standing in the path of a speeding train goes against all your best instincts and logic. But what if you knew that that train was about to derail? What if you also suspected that you might have the power to stop it, instead of simply being crushed and killed? I’d have a hard time believing that you wouldn’t give it a go, even if it meant potential death. Luckily, the kinds of sacrifices likely to be demanded of you this week won’t be so dramatic and final. But neither will they be easy. However, as you consider them, remember my runaway train scenario and this question: what’s what you may have to give up, when weighed against all that you might save?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Kihei Villages 2 bedroom, 1.5 bath exceptionally clean, upgraded condo, one block from the longest beach on maui. $319,000. Century 21-All Islands/Wailea, Josh Jerman R (S) Direct: (808) 283-2222

VACATION RENTALS

SIGNLANGUAGE

I’ve met Libras whose scales were seriously out of whack. They’d lost their true selves within a warped assortment of temporarily-assumed personae. In other words, they’d made such a habit of being the person the situation required that they forgot who they really were. You, too, may be teetering on the edge of losing your true self. If that’s the case, stop trying to fix the world. Now. It may seem selfish to ignore other people in need while you “search for yourself,” but it’s not, exactly. After all, you can’t lift someone else up unless your own feet are firmly planted on solid ground.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Of all the signs, young Scorpios have the hardest time bouncing back from humiliation. Everyone experiences some mortifyingly embarrassing situation at some point in her lifetime, but you Scorps, who do tend to take yourselves a bit too seriously sometimes, require a much longer recovery period than most. This probably seems very much like a weakness, but like all frailties, it can also be a strength. How does this hidden asset make itself manifest? Compassion. When comforting the fallen and disturbed this week, remember the times when you were more or less where they are now. Then you’ll know exactly what to do.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

33 N. Market St. Ste. 201 Wailuku, HI 96793

Your life’s a wheel. Some people manage to climb to the top and stay there for ages, while others seem to be continually crushed underfoot. You, however, get the best and worst of both worlds— moments of success followed by crushing defeat, followed by glory and failure. As you ride the wheel through the ether and the mud, you’re privy to a variety of experience that’s the envy of most. Remember that this week, when you’re craving the one thing you have trouble achieving: lasting stability. Some people live boring, safe lives, but, like it or not, that’s not your lot. That might seem unfair now, while you’re under the wheel instead of on top of it, but once you get a chance to think about it, you’ll realize that you really wouldn’t want it any other way.

DROP OFF

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

33 N. Market St. Ste. 201, Wailuku

You sure know how to haggle. Anyone who pays the asking price for their car, house, or even a twodollar shirt at a flea market is, in your opinion, just a fool. Finessing the price downward is part of the game; the problem is you can sometimes get carried away and start wrangling and quibbling in situations where it’s not appropriate; consequently the “price” goes up, rather than down. Be careful where you bargain-hunt this week, as the opportunities to get a real deal are actually few and far between, surrounded by mostly inflexible situations where you’ll get only what you “pay” for. Trying to negotiate anyway will only get you kicked out of the shop, and the game.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Sometimes you wish you shared that talent for invisibility that some people seem to possess. Because although you’re not as attention-grabbing as some signs, it’s almost impossible for you to escape notice, even when you’d really like to. Unfortunately, fading into the wallpaper’s simply not an option at the moment, and trying to will just lead to embarrassment and even more attention than if you’d just stepped forward and presented yourself. I guess this week’s keywords would be: “dignity in less-than dignified circumstances.” Aim for that and you can’t go too far wrong.

CHARGE IT!

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) The more Fish I get to know, the more I’m convinced you’re actually all just aliens. How else could your point of view be so fundamentally different than most of the rest of ours? A lot of people don’t know just how weird you are, underneath, but some new ones are about to find out this week. Luckily, we’re long past the days of witch-hunts. Most intelligent people are fascinated and respectful of difference. That’s why I urge you this week to flaunt, not attempt to hide what makes you so weird and unique.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Can I just tell you, again, how sexy you are? Your confident, playful energy is likely to be greatly appreciated and sought-after this week. May I suggest working it? You’re not likely to have this many opportunities presented to you, just because of your very nature, for a long time to come. The coolest part is that your adventure-seeking is cumulative: the more doors you open, the more will open for you. Don’t take a chance, though, and you’re not likely to get another one any time soon.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I almost burned my kitchen down this morning, simply because I’ve been too lazy to buy a new toaster. You’ve put yourself in a similarly precarious situation. The slightest of precautions on your part could avert a world of trouble, but you’ve managed to skip that step for ages now. A new toaster could keep my possessions from turning into ash. A comparable preventative measure on your part, one just as easy as shelling out 10 bucks for a counter appliance, could save your ass, too. You know exactly what simple safeguard I’m talking about. This week, take care of it.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

If not now, when?

Curbside Recycling!

I’ve met Tauri who love camping. In fact, communing with nature is right up your alley—only many of you don’t know it yet. You may think of yourself as a totally urban creature, but that’s because you haven’t properly discovered the sensual beauty and serenity only available to you far away from the dirty hubbub of humanity. You need to connect with your animal nature, and the sooner the better (winter’s coming). Find a way to cope with the inconveniences outside of your old comfort zone, and you may just discover a newer, bigger, better one.

With the Full Moon rolling hugely into Pisces, that most idiosyncratic of signs, next week, September’s likely to be a very surreal ride. You couldn’t call it especially bad or good. But “normal” is likely to take on a whole new meaning, and expecting anything would be a mistake. This is surely a test of some of the newfound flexibility and adaptability you acquired this summer. You’ve already passed some simple hurdles: making lemonade out of lemons, though, was easy. What’ll you do when life hands you children in need, or burning houses, or starving cats?

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) How much longer will you make excuses, Leo? Shit like, “I can’t write my novel until I get the right computer” and “I’m just waiting until after this busy period at work to fix my relationship,” won’t cut it anymore. You deserve better. Your ego requires it. You can’t be the fabulous star you want to be just because you’re charming and well-dressed, at least not this week. You’ve got to actually do something. It’s time to put aside all the things you tell yourself are reasons not to get shit done, and just get shit done.

HOLOHOLOGIRL

BY SAMANTHA CAMPOS SAM@MAUITIME.COM

The Unexpected Life is a series of surprises, and would not be worth taking or keeping if it were not. – Ralph Waldo Emerson When I pulled up to her house, Jen was already outside smoking. For the past couple weeks, my dear friend had been tightly wound by the preparations of finally leaving Maui for good, returning to her hometown on the mainland and settling down with her man. But as soon as she saw me roll up in a lowered, shiny black, pseudo-race car with luminous chrome rims, her eyes grew wide and her face lightened. “Whose car is that?!” she asked, mouth agape. I burst out laughing. After we picked up Kim and giggled vociferously at her shocked reaction to the sporty pimp-mobile, the girls immediately began coming up with possible names for my unexpectedly blinged-out new ride. “Well, it definitely has masculine and feminine elements to it,” Jen said. “I think you should name it ‘Danica,’ the transsexual beauty queen from the Philippines.” While the girls continued discussing the matter, I marveled at how radically different this new car is from my rugged old Jeep pal, Rocky. I certainly never expected to be driving around a vehicle that looks like it should come with its own pit crew, and which also prompted my smirking publisher to loan me his copy of The Fast and the Furious. But who knows? Maybe the change of pace will do me good. The girls and I had a rather sumptuous dinner in Wailea, feasting on plate after plate of rich, buttery goodness, to the point of where we simply could not get up from our cushy red leather booth. “I really have to go to the bathroom,” said Kim. “Cinch it,” said Jen, unapologetically not budging. “I’m gonna fart on you.” “Well then, pinch it!” “I really can’t get up,” I said. “Too bad we can’t just sit here and roll this booth out to the next place.” “Yeah,” said Kim. “’Cause then it would be appropriate to say, ‘That’s how we roll!’” We did eventually stumble with full and happy bellies over to Lotus, a recently opened nightclub in the gorgeously decorated Fire Dragon restaurant. The place was jamming but after a quick tour to admire the sights and sounds, we found a quiet nook amidst pillows on a couch. “This wristband is so tight, I’m getting indigestion,” said Kim. In honor of Jen’s last weekend on Maui, we whooped it up in a few bars in Kihei that night. And at some point, a young man approached me in need of some reciprocal flirting. Of course in the past this has not been a problem. But recently I’ve been reconsidering my stance. “I-I-I’m kinda seeing someone,” I explained later to the girls. “Oh, come on!” said Jen. “I’m trying to live vicariously through you! Besides, you can’t be that serious about the guy if you haven’t even introduced him to me yet.” A couple days later, I took my new ride back to the Westside to say goodbye to Jen, who would be leaving the next day. My new male friend was driving—I enjoyed having someone else take the wheel for a change—and I looked over at him suddenly, admiring his profile against the sun setting over the channel between Lanai and Molokai. He returned my gaze with a sly sideways grin and reached for my hand. For once, I was calm. Instead of feeling nauseous or terrified, or over-analyzing the implications and then slyly opening the door handle so I could roll onto the pavement sliding so swiftly beneath us—I just sighed happily and smiled back.
