I know I am not the first to tell you but [Best Radio Station] Mana‘o radio is 91.5 FM and Hawai‘i Public Radio (my other station) is 90.7 FM. Just a typo in your Best of Maui issue [July 26, 2007]. I know you knew that already. -Haiku Nancy, via email On behalf of all of us at Mana‘o Radio 91.5 FM, mahalo to you and Maui Time readers for naming us Best Radio Station! Now, at the risk of seeming ungrateful, I feel I must point out the misspelling of our name and the wrong frequency given in the listing. Unless... you don’t think the readers meant to give the award to HPR, do you? Special mahalo for mentioning Barry [Shannon, the late station founder]. -Kathy Collins, Mana‘o Radio owner, via email It’s too bad you can’t hire someone that knows what their [sic] doing inputting information. What happened to proofreading??? Mana‘o Radio... 91.5 if you didn’t know. -Anonymous, via email The Editor, who’s supposed to know what he’s doing when inputting information, responds: My bad, and I apologize. But in our defense, we did correctly spell the name Renie Hamayelian (Runner-up, Best Male Bartender). Three times! That’s got to count for something.

PUMP DON’T DUMP IN OUR OCEAN WATERS!

LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR

In your July 19, 2007 edition, you have a very readable, informative article: “Chasing Charles Lindbergh,” by James Mordovancey. On page 13 is a picture of Charles Lindbergh’s tombstone. It is inscribed with the verse, “…If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea…” followed by the initials C.A.L. This seems to indicate that Lindbergh was the author of these words. He was not. They come from the King James version of the Bible, Psalm 139, where the Psalmist meditates on the everlasting presence and power of God. Verse 9: “If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;” Verse 10: “…even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.” -David D. Slocum, Makawao The Editor responds: Not to be nitpicking (rarely a good idea when someone of his own volition uses the words “readable” and “informative” in describing one of our articles) but author James Mordovancey described the origin of the tombstone quote in his story. But thanks for your letter.

NOW THIS GUY DOES NOT SUCK AT ALL I have enjoyed your newspaper for many years but in all of your “Best of” issues I never see a Best Barber or Barber Shop category. I only see a category for best hairstylists. I have been called a lot of terrible things, but never a “hairstylist.” I humbly request that next year a “Best Barber” category be added to your issue. Keep up the good work. -Alex Morgan, Beach Barbers Barber Shop, via email

LINDY? HE ONLY SUCKED A LITTLE Many years ago in the early seventies, I met and talked with Charles Lindbergh in Kipahulu. I worked for a surveying company Tryck, Nyman & Hayes. Together we walked the ocean side area of the Palapala Ho‘omau Church. Looking for an area near the cliff overlooking the Pacific that he wanted to survey for his gravesite. For me as a young engineer and surveyor in his twenties, he was exciting to meet. But, also, it was

To the self-righteous hippie who was in such a hurry at Mana Foods that you were just flying down the aisle with your shopping cart, completely oblivious to the rest of the store’s customers, shoving people—like me—aside in your devilmay-care quest for wheat grass or broccoli soda or whatever: you make me sick. Mana Foods is a great store. I love shopping there, but being in your presence for even just a few moments made me want to grasp you vigorously by the shoulders and shake all the hypocrisy and stupidity out of your body. For someone so clearly dedicated to showing the rest of us that you really care about the Earth, you sure are self-involved and rude when confronted with individual Earthlings. So please gather up your dirty ass feet, unkempt hair, food stamps and arrogance and get back in your brand-new SUV, you irritating, un-enlightened, trustafarian son-ofa-bitch poseur. Thank you.

On Saturday, July 21, the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center was packed. Not Friday night packed, with all the baby Goths and Emo kids parading up and down the escalators, but the kind of packed where there were lots of chairs placed in front of the center stage and even more people staring down from the second level. The occasion was the This Week Maui Model Search—the competition to pick a cover model for the venerable, thin visitor pub—but I was treated to a whole frenzy of activity. I had unwittingly stepped into The Scene 2007. Here was a world filled with confused, but (mostly, anyway) delighted mall-goers. People were voluntarily staying outside on a day so muggy you could almost swim in the air. But hey, free food, prizes and entertainment does that to people. Corporate America was out in force. There was a “Jeans Fitting” clinic hosted by American Eagle; a “Get Your Snack On” food sampling booth catered by Jamba Juice and Panda Express; a Sobe Prize Wheel, where prizes ranged from candy to liters of Pepsi; and let’s not forget the chance to win a Nintendo Wii, provided by Da Jam 98.3—all you had to do was stick your face in whipped cream and blow a bubble with gum. The This Week Maui representatives were friendly and charming. The application process to become a cover model was simple: just fill out an application, go to an interview and then have your picture taken. The requirements to be a cover model were also simple. They were looking for upbeat and quick-tosmile locals, over the age of 10. Of course, there’s always that unspoken requirement of cover models. You know—be pretty. I’m not saying some applicants weren’t pretty; I’m just saying that I have different taste. For example, one applicant was not much younger than my grandmother, but somewhat more plastic. But hey, given that there are whole websites dedicated to those types of ladies, who am I to judge? One very pretty young girl composed herself very well. She handed the interviewer an 8-by-11 glossy of

ROLAND • YAMAHA • MACKIE • SHURE • TASCAM • ALESIS • DIGITECH • QSC • KAMAKA • CASIO

herself and answered questions with a polite smile. Too bad not all the applicants were like this. Some were marched to the table, heralded by their parents, who hovered nearby, giving angry glares at the first sign of a lower lip tremble. Other applicants held their noses so high up in the air that I could see their boogers from my second story perch. The contest seemed to bring out the best in mall goers—and by “best,” I mean “lunacy.” At one point, I noticed a disheveled man finger painting behind the Queen Ka‘ahumanu statue. At another time a mother dangled her infant from the second story, a la Michael Jackson. And what about that surly looking, pink haired girl walking all over, checking everyone out? Oh wait, that was me. MTW

ROBREPORT

BY ROB PARSONS ROBPARSONS@EARTHLINK.NET

What’s Alan Been Up To? Talking with former Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa After being a ubiquitous and familiar presence at community events during his four years as Maui County Mayor, Alan Arakawa’s latest whereabouts have been a bit of a mystery. I’ve seen him a few times at Akaku studios (he’s a volunteer cameraman for two different programs) and recently heard that he helped a friend change her flat tire as she was leaving the county building. But other than that, I’ve been unable to answer the frequently asked question, “What’s the former mayor been up to?” I served four years as Arakawa’s Environmental Coordinator, so one sunny weekend morning I decided to find out how he was doing. I found him and his wife Ann working in their yard on a busy corner in the heart of Kahului. Looking tan and healthy, Arakawa took me on an extensive backyard tour of his turtle and fishponds, shade houses and vegetable and flower plantings. He’s been repotting hundreds of orchids and anthuriums, and showed me his method: lots of gravel in the bottom for proper drainage, an equal amount of wood chips, then just a little bit of potting soil and time release fertilizer around the top roots. He’s also planted roses, gardenias, gladiolus and akulekule–part of an overall strategy to, as he put it, “keep my wife happy.” Indeed, one of the questions I intended to ask was how he was progressing with his “honey-do” list. As we moved inside, I found that such a list actually existed, written on an apron and tacked to a door: Fix the toilet; Clean garage and yard; Repair the pipe under the sink; Clean the attic. Written three times were the words “See Ann for more.” MAUI TIME WEEKLY: I’ve been asked many times, “What’s the former mayor up to? How’s he doing?” ALAN ARAKAWA: My foremost goal in life is to keep my wife happy. Besides my chores, I’ve been volunteering with Akaku, Hui Malama, Kahului School and the Kenjin Kai Maui Okinawan group. I’m on the board for the first time of the Mayor Arakawa Kokua Fund, which has disbursed over $60,000 to needy groups and individuals. I’m doing some consulting, and just finished a bowling league. I’m also enjoying life, and playing bridge three to four times weekly. I’m happy to say I’m “improving.” I’m enjoying a health-

LC Watch Out of a Job The words caught me by surprise. Even now, looking back over my notes, I’m taken aback by them. “We’re pretty much working our way out of a job,” Liquor Control Director Franklyn Silva told the Maui County Liquor Commission during its July 11, 2007 hearing. “The Adjudication Board is going to be dormant for a while.” Silva had been talking to the commission about minor decoy sting operations. It’s summer, and the LC has been running a lot of them. Silva said that when his department first starting sending undercover minors into the county’s bars and restaurants, a mere 47 percent properly carded the minor and then refused to sell. Today, Silva boasted that the compliance percentage tops 89 percent.

Arakawa and his garden

ier lifestyle now that I’m not under constant pressure. Ann and I have been finding time to do some walking. We’ve also been care-giving for Ann’s father, who has had some health problems. Now to business. Much of Maui is again experiencing drought conditions, and discussion of the usage of Hamakuapoko wells has again arisen. Any thoughts or solutions? We actually had a comprehensive program to drought-proof Maui. First and foremost, I still believe that water on Maui should be under the control of government. Without that control, it will be very difficult to direct growth. If the developers control water, they can build anyplace. If the county controls water, the county can dictate where and when that growth will occur. I still believe that our water systems need to be connected so that we can manage them. With all the private systems, there’s no rhyme or reason to the current water management. If the private sector is allowed to develop water sources, then only the rich will be able to build and develop. This is what’s happening with Wailea 670, and with Kula projects, too. They drill wells and circumvent the water meter list. While there were great efforts to discredit the use of Hamakuapoko wells, the same sort of contaminants will be found in water sources all over the island. Is it

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

achievable to have water with zero contaminants? No. We have to ask ourselves what is most practical and obtainable, and realize that it won’t happen overnight. Is it my imagination, or have things been exceptionally quiet from the new Mayor’s office? It seems that the new administration is trying to put off for at least a year the projects we started: South Maui gymnasium see ARAKAWA, page 11

This actually poses a problem. For nearly every week since March 2004, this column has chronicled the deeds—and apparent misdeeds—of the LC. But now, through no fault of our own, this column is in danger of becoming obsolete. See, Silva wasn’t exaggerating about the Adjudication Board, which sanctions license-holders for liquor license violations, has pretty much stopped hearing cases. Since the beginning of this year, the board has passed judgment on a grand total of eight licensees (the same period in 2006 saw 25 licensees hauled before the board on various alleged violations). The July 5, 2007 hearing agenda had no new cases. Ditto the upcoming Aug. 2 agenda. There was no Adjudication Board hearing at all in June (or in February, for that matter), and the May meeting saw just one case. If this continues, the Adjudication Board won’t be the only one out of a job.

SHIP HAPPENS Hell of an ambiguous time for the good folks at A&B and its many divisions and subsidiaries. According to the July 27, 2007 Honolulu Advertiser, the previous day the company released earnings reports showing that it not only made more money in the three months ending June 30 than the previous quarter last year (74 cents per share vs. 68 cents per share) but more money than even Wall Street analysts predicted (73 cents). Then it’s stock plummeted in a big sell-off, dropping $2.02 a share. A&B’s Matson Navigation is doing better than ever because of its new shipping service to China—profits rose $14.7 million!—but shipping within Hawaiian waters dropped five percent “due to a decline in automobile and building materials shipments,” reported the Advertiser. If that were all, then A&B would balance out and stay at Number 3. But that didn’t happen: the company’s profits from property sales also fell 59 percent ($6.4 million).

SUPER SWELL And MLP moves down a notch after its million dollar investment otherwise known as the Hawai`i Superferry visited Maui on July 22. Now the big boat was supposed to arrive on July 21, but company officials delayed its passage because of concerns over storm swell caused by Tropical Depression Cosme. Um, Hawai`i has tropical depressions—and storms—every summer. Are delays like this going to be routine? MTW

Whenever a person—a citizen, if you will—is arrested or sued, his or her name immediately becomes part of the public record. Newspaper reporters can look at the appropriate court documents or arrest reports and write stories naming all the individuals involved. By common agreement throughout the U.S., this is called “news.” And this is true here as well, with one small but glaring exception: if you’re a member of the Maui Police Department—a cop, if you will—and you get officially accused of committing some violation, then you get complete anonymity. A brief, unbylined story in today’s Maui News (buried on page A4) outlines in extremely vague terms three cases of MPD officers busted in some manner earlier this year. No names are given—“The names of the officers were not made public,” the paper soberly reminds us. See, the cops never give out names because they consider such incidents “personnel matters.” Even if a police shoots and kills someone and is temporarily pulled from duty, the name of the officer remains a closely guarded secret.

Not now—terrified.

So looks like Democratic U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka is “postponing” one of his more famous 2006 reelection campaign promises. According to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, Akaka won’t be headed up to Alaska this summer to talk to the Gwich’in Indians about how they feel the sinking of a bunch of oil wells in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) will make life miserable for the Porcupine caribou they live off. “I am disappointed that after extensive planning by staff from the Energy Committee and my office, that my visit to Alaska was cancelled at the last page 12 minute to do requests of postponement from those on both sides of the ANWR issue, based on scheduling conflicts,” Akaka said, according to the Advertiser. Whether Akaka actually goes to Alaska for his “fact-finding trip” to see the Gwich’in may be a moot concern. For the last 12 years, Akaka has insisted that he supports drilling ANWR because the proceeds will benefit “the Alaska Natives.” In fact, as we pointed out nearly two years ago (see our Aug. 4, 2005 story “Akaka’s Eskimos”) just 9,000 natives—the Inupiat people—will see any money from ANWR drilling. The rest of Alaska’s natives get nothing because of a shrewdly written 1983 agreement with the U.S. Department of the Interior that the federal General Accounting Office found to be “not in the government’s best interest.” Be nice if a single trip up north will change our good senator’s more than a decade of absurd support for oil drilling, but it’s doubtful.

Even the incidents themselves are described in rather patronizing terms. “A Maui Police Department officer was suspended for five days for failing to properly recover and report evidence seized, police reported,” the story tells us. What “failing to properly recover and report evidence seized” is exactly is left to the reader: Failure to fill out an evidence report? Mislabeling a container? Taking seized Ice and selling it back on the streets? Who knows? We can assume that since the officer’s sanction was a mere five-day suspension, the violation was more likely the former rather than the later, but it’s impossible to say for certain. And I suppose the police are cool with that.

Looks like the proposed Sorry Alaska: no return trip this year Malulani Health & Medical Center—that sparkling “state of the art” $212 millabels are churning out these days. What’s lion new hospital for Kihei—is no longer especially scary about this recall that it’s proposed. According to the July 24 completely, totally, absolutely unnecessary. ROBREPORT ARAKAWA: continued from page 8 ($10 million) and police station. They’ve allowed the Olowalu to Puamana acquisition to lapse. Ultimately, if the economy takes a downturn, they’re going to have a lot of problems. The previous County Council often held a contentious or adversarial stand with your administration’s initiatives, such as One Main Plaza, Hamakuapoko wells and a proposed Environmental Center. What do you expect from the new council and mayor? I expect they will quietly approve leasing a lot more office space to meet the demand of 126 new positions. I’m curious to see exactly how much it will cost versus what we would have paid to own the building. The county could have acquired One Main Plaza for $10.5 million, but it sold for around $20 million, so leases will cost even more. I think the public should be asking, how much more money are we going to spend? Po‘okela well is online and we’re still in drought. I would hope [councilmembers] Mike Victorino, former chair of the Board of Water Supply, and Gladys Baisa, whose husband worked in the department, will work to make our water planning right. You consistently sought to see full studies done for Kahului Harbor and the Superferry. You once told state Department of Transportation officials, “I don’t care what you say, it’s not all going to fit here.” Any thoughts, with Superferry service probably about to begin, even with two court rulings coming up in August? I still believe the harbor plans should be done, long term. I have some very strong fears about the situation at the harbor as it exists today. I believe there are some major improvements that must be done. I don’t believe we will stop the Superferry. I believe the exemption was a mistake, but with the governor and legislators supporting it, we have to be practical. They sort of took it out of our hands at the county level. I have some fears of the spread of invasive species, but that applies to all manners of shipping, including Young Brothers. What’s one thing you would do immediately if you were still mayor? Purchase the pali to Puamana for a coastal park. If not, the developers will use it for leverage to get whatever they want. I’d be looking very strongly to

pave the cane haul road for an alternate route when there are road closures. I’m also concerned about the overspending in the budget this year, despite the $50 million in carry over saving we left for them. It’s going to be tough on them next year, especially with the huge amount owed to balance the employee retirement benefits fund. One action we have heard about is the enforcement on vacation rentals. Your views? The council and the administration had an agreement and they reneged on it. That’s very bad policy, and they could lose if there is a lawsuit. The intent of the agreement was proper. With home occupation, if they’re going to enforce one business, they should enforce across the board. Delaying enforcement until legislation was passed was correct. We must keep the integrity of our commitments. What are the critical environmental issues facing Maui? Two major issues: Continue eradication of coqui frogs is one, and only because it is attainable. We need the funding to finish the job. Another concern is the axis deer population. They’re spreading up into the watershed areas, causing problems with farmers, and being spotted in West Maui. What about sustainability? Food and energy security? Crops need to be grown here, not imported. We need to continue to convert the county fleet to biodiesel. Ultimately, we need to become self-sufficient. Food is really difficult, due to the alien invasive species. There are a lot more pests here in Kahului than in Kula, and it’s really challenging. Have you considered your political future? Council? Mayor? State office? How about, gardener, handyman, and staying on Ann’s good side? I’d only consider running again if I’m too frustrated at things going wrong. If things go right, I’d just as soon leave it alone. Lastly, what did four years as Maui’s mayor teach you? If you really work hard, you can actually get something accomplished. And that there are a lot of really good people out there who want to see things done the right way. It’s easy to be an armchair quarterback, but difficult to do the actual work. It was a great experience being Mayor and I learned a tremendous amount. I am deeply grateful for having been given the opportunity to serve this community. MTW

MINI MINIS It is increasingly difficult these days for a girl to go through the stage of “plain old kid,” according to a June Arizona Republic story, because clothing fashions seem to move from “toddler” directly to some form of “teen” (including “tween” and now “pretween”), with spaghetti-strap dresses and “ultra miniskirts,” but in tinierthan-ever sizes. In fact, reported the newspaper, GapKids recently offered a “white, crocheted string bikini you’d likely see Anna Kournikova wearing on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue [except that it] was for a 12-month-old.”

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Faced with falling prices for domestic wine, a group of French vintners has made terrorist threats against the government and retailers who carry imports. The guerrilla gang, wearing black ski masks, released a video in May (so far ignored by the Sarkozy government), reminding officials about recent incidents in which small explosives were detonated in supermarkets that carry imported wines and in which a tractor-trailer carrying imported wine had been shot at. Said one hooded protester, “Blood will flow” if prices don’t soon rise.

PARENTS WITH TOO MUCH MONEY Backyard play sets can range in price from less than $100 to high-end outfits of $2,000 to $12,000 that would typically include fancy combinations of rock walls, rope ladders, sandboxes and tunnel slides, and maybe a tower with roofs and rotating plastic guns mounted on the walls, according to a May report in Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel. Also available: the King Kong Carl McKee Custom, at 46

feet by 58 feet, featuring towers 16 feet high (price: about $46,000, installed).

THE CONTINUING CRISIS In June, for the fourth year, professor Paul Worsey of the University of Missouri-Rolla conducted his Summer Explosives Camp, with 20 high-schoolage kids learning the techniques of blowing things up (e.g., a tree stump, a watermelon, a dead chicken). Said one camper, “Some people like baseball [but] I just like to set off bombs.” Worsey’s main goal is to recruit mineengineering majors to his school, but another benefit, he told National Public Radio, is that the school “attract[s] the kids that might otherwise get into a little bit of trouble [and] give[s] them... an opportunity for a career.”

PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Tony Hicks was hospitalized in Knoxville, Tenn., for separate wounds on July 1, 2 and 3; he was hit by a car one night, then released from the hospital the next day, but was back in after an intruder attacked him in his home, and after his release the next day, he was back after police shot him in connection with a robbery.

LEAST COMPETENT PERSON On May 31, veteran big-rig operator Gilberto Cantu drove his 18-wheeler all the way through the Lincoln Tunnel (1.5 miles, from Weehawken, N.J., to New York City) even though the load was six inches too high for the tunnel, so that the truck’s roof continuously ripped and peeled off, slowing the truck and making a screeching noise the whole way. In addition, Cantu apparently ignored the several sound warnings and flashing lights by officers who tried to stop him inside the tunnel, and according to their reports, he appeared not even to understand why they had stopped him after he finally emerged. Cantu was not alcohol-impaired and, until then, had a “spotless” safety record. MTW

Maui TIME “It is a startling contrast to the dog-eared picture of Hawaii which most mainlanders (including Senators) carry around in their minds. he thick vegetation, pineapple patch and plantation-style cottages that sit just makai of the cannery and Fukushima Store look like any other part of Haiku. You don’t have to walk too far in any direction before the modern sounds of civilization disappear, transporting you back to a time when all you’d hear was the odd rooster crowing and the wind rustling through the lush jungle. Really, it wasn’t that long ago that the old cannery was still just for canning pineapple, rather than holding an eclectic array of cafés and shops. Back then, steam trains regularly ran through town, bringing sand and lime up from the coast and pineapples to the Kahului Harbor. And for a brief time in 1942, Haiku also included an internment camp for Japanese Americans. Today most Haiku residents—to say nothing of the rest of the island—have no idea it was there. There’s no sign of it these days, or even any indication of where it stood exactly—just vague directions handed down by descendents of some of its now-deceased prisoners. “The camp was located below where the Haiku Post Office is now, near the old Mukai Store,” said Sandy Daniels, the granddaughter of Tetsuji Hanzawa, who was held at the camp. “The Haiku Camp was located about 250 feet makai side of the old Haiku Fruit cannery and about 50 feet to the right side of the then old Hana Highway,” Kenneth Okano, who used to drive a woman to the camp to visit her husband, said in a hand-written recollection of the camp on file with the Japanese

Cultural Center of Hawai‘i (JCCH). “The camp was set up on the athletic field located in that area. Today you cannot tell that there was a camp as there are homes built in that area.” aui was spared the relentless bombardments, bloody invasions and ruthless occupations that characterized the Pacific Theater during World War II. But the war didn’t bypass the island entirely. In Makawao, the paniolos formed the Maui Mounted Patrol to keep the peace Upcountry. Over in South Maui, U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT or “frogmen”) trained at what is now the Royal Mauian Hotel—you can still see the wreckage of old pillboxes among the rocks at Kamaole I Beach Park. Marines practiced amphibious landings at Kealia Pond. Hellcat fighters flew off the short airstrip at Naval Airstation Pu‘unene, used today by the island’s drag racers. And in Haiku in early 1942, U.S. Army soldiers resettled the island’s Japanese residents—many of them American citizens—into a camp. Such camps existed on every major island. “[T]hey learned last week that, in a nation’s hour of peril, having been born a citizen is not enough,” Time Magazine wrote ominously the week of Mar. 16, 1942. “So they began to pack their keepsakes, lift their slanteyed children on their arms, and start on the long migration east across the Sierra Nevadas, to dreary inland country far from the blue sea.”

M

These were the dark days of the war, immediately following the Pearl Harbor attacks, and President Franklyn Roosevelt ordered the army to round up more than 100,000 Japanese Americans across Hawai‘i and the Mainland’s West Coast and move them inland, ostensibly where they couldn’t commit unspeakable acts of sabotage. Racism and wartime paranoia—far more than any strategic consideration— were the engines that kept the prisoners moving. “The Japanese race is an enemy race and while many second and third generation Japanese born on United States soil, possessed of United States citizenship, have become Americanized, the racial strains are undiluted,” Lieutenant General John Lesesne DeWitt—Western Defense Command chief and architect of internment—wrote to his superiors in 1942. “To conclude otherwise is to expect that children born of white parents on Japanese soil sever all racial affinity and become loyal Japanese subjects, ready to fight, and if necessary, to die for Japan in a war against the nation of their parents.” What’s more, DeWitt was so caught up in wartime hysteria that even the absence of attacks by a Japanese American “fifth column” of saboteurs terrified him. “There are indications that these [Japanese] are organized and ready for concerted action at a favorable opportunity,” he continued in his memo. “The very fact that no sabotage has taken place to date is a disturbing and confirming indication that such action will be taken.” Ironically, even though Nazi U-boats did land sabo-

teurs on the East Coast—the FBI rounded them up fairly easily, with the help of a turncoat—government officials never seriously considered the incarceration of German and Italian Americans.

ften citizens were given just 48 hours notice or less to pack whatever they could carry and leave their homes and businesses. All Americans of Japanese ancestry— even those with sons serving in the U.S. military—had to go. Their new “homes” for the duration of the war were true detention camps—on the Mainland, guard towers and machine guns were the norm. The camps on Maui and the other Hawaiian islands were apparently not so hardcore. The Haiku Camp consisted mostly of tents and non-permanent structures. From there, the army moved prisoners first to either Sand Island in Honolulu Harbor or Honouliuli near Ewa, and then to big Mainland camps like Manzanar, located in California’s Owens Valley. Tetsuji Hanzawa—owner of Hanzawa’s Store, which is still in Haiku—was one of the prisoners held at the Haiku camp. Now deceased (he’d be 105 today), his granddaughter Sandra Daniells runs the store today. According to Daniells, authorities took her grandfather first to the Haiku camp, and then to a more permanent facility in New Mexico. When ordered into the camp, Hanzawa’s wife and other relatives were left behind to run the business without him. In this regard, Hazawa was lucky—after the war, he had a still-functioning business to return to. Documentation on the camp is rare, to say the least. In response to our inquiry about life at the Haiku camp, the JCCH dug around, but didn’t find much. “We have so little information that we hope your story will encourage people to contact you to offer their stories, etc.,” Jane Kurahara, a JCCH Resource Center volunteer, emailed us. The JCCH did produce a letter from the National Archives. Dated Sept. 23, 1943 and written by Swedish Vice Consul Gustaf W. Olson, it’s one of the only known official accounts of life in the camp, though written at a time when it appears most of Maui’s prisoners had already been moved out to other camps. If it represents an accurate depiction of life, then the Haiku prisoners had a far easier time coping with incarceration than their counterparts on the Mainland or even other Hawaiian islands. “Reference is made to my report on this camp dated January 30, 1943, in which I described it and stated that it is the best of all the internment camps in the Territory,” Olson wrote. “I can only repeat this opinion, with added emphasis. It is a most delightful place, and being on vacation at the time of my visit, I would rather have stayed there than return to the hotel in Wailuku. “There were only four internees at the time of my visit, only one of whom was a Japanese subject,” he continued. “All had been recommended for release by the local board. All expressed themselves as well content with their treatment. I lunched on the same food served the internees and found it good.”

O

enneth Okano was born in Hana in 1928. Later he moved to Lahaina to attend Lahainaluna High as a boarder. Working as an errand boy during the war, he was able to drive a large Plymouth. He says he drove Mrs. Nishino and her daughter Pricilla the 45 minutes up to the Haiku camp to visit Nishino’s husband twice–both times on the weekend. The Nishino family owned a laundry in Lahaina. Authorities sent Kinori Nishino to the Haiku camp before transferring him to another camp on Sand Island and then finally to the Mainland. Priscilla Shinmoto, daughter of the now deceased Nishino, visited her father when she was a child. Today she’s a retired schoolteacher and a grandmother living in Oahu. She says that she only discovered that her father spent time in an Albuquerque camp when she saw a Hawaii Herald article listing the names of prisoners held there (The Hawaii Herald is a Japanese American newspaper in Hawai‘i). “He came home in ’45,” Shinmoto said. “I was born in ’41. He never talked about it. All 18 years I was growing up in Lahaina, he never talked about it. I think that’s how it was. They never

brought it up. He had to leave behind a business, his wife and three small children to fend for themselves.” Nishino exemplifies the arbitrary, often contradictory grounds for imprisonment Japanese Americans faced. Shingmoto said her father went to the camps because he was a Judo instructor and community leader. She said that military authorities considered those characteristics “a threat, or whatever.” Okano, her Lahainaluna chauffeur, heard a different story. “I heard Nishino was sent to the camp because when he’d make laundry deliveries, he would boast that the Japanese were going to win the war,” he said. Okano added that usually, just teachers, Buddhist reverends, businessmen and people involved with the Japanese government were sent to the camps. He said that when Hawai‘i was still a U.S. territory, Japanese American babies were registered first with local government liaisons and then the Japanese government. This way they could get dual-citizenship. Shinmoto recalled that her father went to the camp with five of his friends. She doesn’t recall all of their names, but one was apparently a man named Fukunaga who worked at the Post Office and another was Reverend Tanaka from Lahaina. Two others were Nishino’s fishing buddies. “They all five went to the camp,” she said. “I think they’re all gone now.” he financial costs to Japanese Americans were enormous,” Eric Muller wrote in the December 2004 Reason Online article “Indefensible Internment.” According to Muller, property losses suffered by the Japanese Americans exceeded $150 million in 1940 dollars. No one knows how much they lost in potential income, emotional hardship and societal stigmatization. After the war, the U.S. Government

redressed former prisoners’ documented property losses, paying a mere 25 cents on the dollar. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act, formally recognizing the hardship Japanese American citizens endured during the war and offering financial reparations and a formal apology acknowledging that the internment policy was more based on racism than military necessity. The apology was good but long overdue. And it almost goes without saying that the reparations were a mere pittance. By February 1999, the U.S. government had handed out 82,210 payments of $20,000 each to Japanese Americans or their heirs, according to Justice Department officials. Today, the forced evacuation and incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II is nearly universally reviled in this country. We say “nearly,” because every now and then some voice pops up in the wilderness to say what President Roosevelt and General DeWitt did was completely justified. Calling the contemporary outrage at the camps a “politically correct myth… enshrined as incontrovertible wisdom in the gullible press, postmodern academia, the cash-hungry grievance industry, and liberal Hollywood,” conservative commentator Michelle Malkin managed to put the best spin on the camps she could in her 2004 tome In Defense of Internment: The case for ‘Racial Profiling’ in World War II and the War on Terror. Based on the historically shaky theory that Top Secret “MAGIC” intelligence intercepts–secret cables sent by the Japanese government and intercepted by U.S. intelligence–guided men like Lt. Gen. DeWitt towards internment. Now Malkin herself admits she’s not an historian, and authentic historians have discredited this view, observing, among other things, that

DeWitt didn’t have the security clearance to even know that U.S. Military Intelligence was reading secret Japanese cables. But we live in a time when conservative commentators like Malkin—a favorite on Fox News and talk radio—are so paranoid about terrorism that they scream about the need to watch Arabs everywhere, regardless of whether there’s any evidence of guilt. “Absolutists who oppose national-security profiling often invoke the World War II experience of JapaneseAmericans,” Malkin wrote in USA Today on Aug. 16, 2004. “Post-9/11, the belief that racial, religious and nationality profiling is never justified has become a dangerous bugaboo. It is unfortunate that loyal Muslims or Arabs might be burdened because of terrorists who share their race, nationality or religion. But any inconvenience is preferable to suffering a second mass terrorist attack on American soil.” Buried in Malkin’s slippery illogic is a stunning argument: it’s okay to imprison people simply because they happen to be a certain race. As the Japanese American internment experience slips further out of living memory, and places like the Haiku Camp disappear entirely, there’s a real danger that such attitudes will become easier to justify. The JCCH is currently seeking people who either know about or were involved with Maui’s internment camps. They will send someone to Maui to record the oral histories of people with information on this nearly lost era. You may contact them at (808) 945-7633. MTW

Five Courses The tantalizing tastings of Capiche?’s Il Teatro

I

am a Food Network junkie. I love to see Anthony Bourdain eating dubious sausage in Nepal. I revel in the dinner parties the Barefoot Contessa throws for her closest friends. I’m on the edge of my seat while Bobby Flay out-cooks local amateurs on their home turfs. I love chefs, food and watching chefs cooking food. It’s kind of a spiritual experience for me, really. So when I was invited to check out “Il Teatro”—a dining experience in which you watch while the chef cooks for you and a handful of other guests—I was all over it. And it was at Capische?, with its swirly ambience and sexy bar lounge, so how could I refuse? I met my entourage in the lobby of the main dining room, and we were quickly escorted to the bar. We claimed our stake immediately on the plush sofa. But soon we were summoned to leave our

fantasy lounge, and were led past Capische?’s romantic balcony with its ocean views, down the stairs overlooking an immaculate garden and into a room separated into two primitive kitchens surrounded by about a dozen seats.

Il Teatro at Capische? Wailea Diamond Resort, 879-2224. By reservation only. $$$ We met our fellow diners for the evening and conversation flowed freely. We were then greeted by our personal chef and server for the evening, as they uttered the words I’ve longed to hear since the day my cable subscription ran out: “Think of this as your own personal little cooking show and wine tasting.” Our chef, Chris Kulis, came from the Culinary Institute of America in New York and most recently, famous chef Thomas Keller’s Bouchon kitchen in Napa Valley. Along with Capische? executive chef and Il Teatro mastermind Brian Etheredge, Kulis has a passion for Italian and French cuisine and using locally grown produce and meats whenever possible. Our wine guide for the evening was Alex Rojas, a charming server who’s

been with Capische? since it opened in 2002. For the past three years, Capische? has been the recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. As Rojas poured our initial glass, he told us of the Italian tradition of drinking Prosecco as a welcome toast and then described the sparking wine’s qualities. Soon after, Chef Kulis awakened our taste buds with his ahi tartare amuse bouche, served with a tomato and olive oil foam. As Kulis prepared the multi-course feast, he showed us what equipment he was using, the process by which he cooks, as well as why he chose each item and where it came from. Mostly we oohed and aahed but guests are encouraged to ask questions. And we did. What are the differences between olive oils? Can you make an olive oil ice cream? Can you do this in a toaster oven? The sun set over the Japanese rock garden outside our window as Rojas poured the Orvieto Classico, a crisp, floral house wine that perfectly complements two antipasti dishes—one, a fresh garden array of beets, hearts of palm and grana padona; the other a thinly sliced finocchino or fennel salami, with fresh moz-

zarella and shaved parmesan. Our second course of seared squab breast, arugula salad, house-cured pancetta, strawberries and aged balsamic was paired with the chef’s favorite red, Terre di Talamo “Tempo.” At the same time, a refreshing Grechetto was paired with a “Frutti di Mare” salad with crab, calamari and grilled scallops. Over the next couple hours, the chef worked his way through five courses of tastings, not including the amuse bouche and intermezzo, with wine from two complementary menus: “From the Coast” paired seafood-based dishes with white Italian wines while “From the Hills” was the more earthy menu, utilizing pastas, meats and red wine. All the while, each course was more tantalizing than the last. But perhaps this was only exemplified by being able to appreciate it during its creation. The woman sitting next to me called it. “How exciting!” she said. “I haven’t even had it yet and I’m like, ‘Ooh, it’s so good!’” MTW

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Liliana Begley

Trunk Treasure

Tango Fandango

Friday (Aug. 3), 4 p.m. at Epitome, Lahaina [BENEFIT] I admit I had no idea what a “trunk sale” was before I wrote this. I was envisioning big black luxury sedans showcasing cheap designer knockoff bags and shades while sketchy types lurked around, waiting to make you a deal. Boy, was I wrong. This trunk sale will be held at Epitome, a classy, contemporary fashion boutique, and feature the collections of two new designers. A portion of the proceeds goes to a very, very good cause. Six-year-old Jacqueline Wenzler-Steves, daughter of Lahaina firefighter Vince Steves, is suffering from a type of bone cancer called Euing’s Sarcoma. In addition to fundraising through the sale, donations will be collected on the family’s behalf at the event. The evening is being sponsored by Mala Ocean Tavern in Lahaina, and the featured collections are Golden Child Jewelry, designed by a local artist, and Q by Douie—an imported collection of luxurious cotton separates from Israel. Free. Epitome, 1087 Limahana Place, Lahaina. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

THURSDAY

Friday (Aug. 3), 7:30 p.m. at Castle Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center [DANCING] The Third International TangoFest, Maui (Aug. 1-5) comes to a gushing climax with Tango Amor III: Love of Tango 3. I’ve got this theory about fighters and dancers: they’re basically the same people. It’s all about the release of a dynamic and powerful energy. It’s this energy that is obviously present in Tango Amor, and also serves as a reminder that passion is not just for made-for-TV movies. For those thinking that tango is just for pansies, there’s a reason you’re receiving less action than you’d like… When’s the last time your manly ability to open a beer bottle with your forearm/belly/eye socket aroused your partner into a state of wanton abandon? I thought so. Tango Amor III showcases Argentine Tango, in all its glorious ecstasy. Remember, it takes two to tango, so bring a date. Unless you’re into polyamory, then the more the merrier. Tickets: $20. For info about Tango Amor III visit www.mauiarts.org. For more info about TangoFest, Maui visit www.tangofestmaui.com. 242-7469. [YNEZ TONGSON]

Roots Rager

Jah Know it be Irie

Friday (Aug. 3), at 10 p.m. Hard Rock Café Lahaina [MUSIC] Okay. I’ll admit it. O-shen is smoking hot. There’s just something about a white guy with tons of tribal tattoos. Did you know he was raised in New Guinea? Yeah. It makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it? He’ll be kicking off the weekend on Friday at the Summer Roots Rager along with Don Carlos. Don Carlos, in case you didn’t know, is a Reggae God. O-shen’s new CD, 1 Rebel, is rad. He’s teamed up with some big names on the album, including one of P. Diddy’s boyz, Elephant Man. It promises to be an ultra-hot night. Not to mention, everyone who buys a ticket gets 1 Rebel for free. Major score. Tickets: $25. For more info visit: www.myspace.com/oshensmusic

Bomb Talk Monday (Aug. 6) at 7 p.m. at the Hongwanji Buddhist Mission in Kahului [WAR TALK] Our president—being the student of international affairs, military history and geopolitics that he is—loves to scare the hell out of people at home and abroad by talking up the virtues of “nuculear” bunker busting bombs, for use against our myriad cave-bound enemies. For an alternative perspective on the use of nuclear weapons—especially since Aug. 6 is the 62nd anniversary of our nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, killing 100,000 people in the process—Maui Peace Action has brought Dr. Seiji Yamada of the University of Hawai`i John A. Burns of Medicine to explain what it was like for him to treat people exposed to radiation emitted from American nuclear weapon testing in the Pacific. The talk is free, and there will be refreshments following Dr. Yamada’s talk for anyone who still has an appetite. The Hongwanji Buddhist Mission is located at 291 Pu`unene Ave. in Kahului. For more information, call 573-3255. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]

DAY

[MUSIC] Yes, another Fest. Now, this one may not have the pungent appeal of the Onion Fest or the flashy moves of TangoFest, but SoulJah Fest has got something even better… the sounds of New Zealand reggae group Katchafire. Roots music is a New Zealand passion and while these guys are huge in their home country, they’ve also found a big fan base here in Hawai`i. Katchafire is known worldwide for the revitalizing vibes of their unique roots style and high-energy performances. This summer concert series is a prelude to the release of a third album called Say What You’re Thinking. The band has eight members from two generations of two Maori families (the indigenous peeps of NZ), they’ve been touring together for eight years and they’ve shared stages with big names like The Wailers, Third World, Shaggy and Damien Marley. This weekend they’ll be jammin’ with the likes of Unified Soul, Dani Girl, Bubs and Ooklah-The-Moc. Tickets: $32, $28. 242-7469. [JA]

FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Super Spy The Bourne Trilogy Ends Even audiences new to the Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) spy thriller franchise will respond with compulsory excitement at the elaborately orchestrated chain of exhilarating chase sequences that lead up to a philosophically satisfying whopper of a climax. Paul Greengrass continues his directing duties after The Bourne Supremacy (Doug Liman directed The Bourne Identity, the first movie based on the novel by the late Robert Ludlum) and gets stellar results from returning cameraman Oliver Wood, editor Christopher Rouse and musical composer John Powell.

The Bourne Ultimatum

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/111 min.

After losing his girlfriend Marie to an assassin in the last movie, former CIA hit man Bourne is hotter than ever to uncover his true identity, mysteriously erased from his brain. International locations like Moscow, Paris, Madrid and London change like a roulette-wheel ball as Bourne perpetually turns the tables on teams of kill squads ordered to snuff him out by CIA bigwig Noah Vosen (David

Strathairn). Canny dialogue, solid performances, and virtuoso editing and scoring make The Bourne Ultimatum a thrill ride you won’t soon forget. Bourne knows too much about systematic strategy, but almost nothing about his motivation for the precision killings that he commits on a daily basis in order to survive. The historical dilemma regarding his memory is a burning question that has fueled three films worth of fast-twitch brutality and mind-boggling car chases. Bourne operates purely on trained killer instinct and adrenaline, and yet he has a steel thread of mercy that occasionally shines. In effect, he is an archetype for the modern cinematic spy because he chases the action that chases him, albeit with humorless venom liberated by his utterly autonomous existence. A Guardian newspaper article linking Bourne to a CIA black-ops group called “Blackbriar” draws him to London to question the journalist that wrote the piece. The hair-raising encounter that follows is a crash course in ducking CCTV surveillance cameras positioned around Waterloo station as viewed by Noah Vosen’s CIA headquarters, committed to stopping Bourne in his tracks. CIA official Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) returns from the last Bourne movie to assist Vosen in trapping his quarry, but becomes suspect of the chief’s unethical treatment of the case. The interior femaleinflected shift to Bourne’s side coincides with the return of suave CIA op Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) just after Bourne has efficiently finished off a goon squad

Wait, this isn’t the key to my identity–it’s a grocery receipt inside CIA offices in Madrid. Muted romantic sparks fly between Parsons and Bourne, and it’s their delicate acknowledgement and necessary disavowal of the attraction that underlies a superaction motorcycle and foot chase sequence that leads up to one of the most impressive hand-to-hand combat displays ever filmed. After surviving a car-bomb explosion and escaping from hordes of Spanish police, Bourne goes toe to toe with an agent sent by Vosen to kill him. Within the tight confines of an otherwise unoccupied apartment, Bourne and his equally skilled opponent go at it with everything they’ve got. The scene is unaccompanied by music and only sound from the men’s mortally threatening grunts and blows punctuate the silence. Although the scene is filled with quick-cut editing, this is far from the music video-

styled compositions that have wrecked innumerable features. Instead, we get an intense representation of a life-or-death struggle where each man is fully invested in using everything at his disposal to kill the other. The episode promises to do for fight scenes what the car chase in Bullitt did for auto pursuits in every movie that followed. The screenwriters do something magical in combining a Casablanca brand of romanticism with a determinedly 21st century tone of unrelenting pulsing action. But they go one further by delivering a thematically polished ending that embraces political and social commentary that cuts close to the bone of America’s manifold militarized social crises. The Jason Bournes of the world are out there, and they will eventually come home to roost. MTW

Pop goes the Reggae Unified Soul brings a fresh sound to the island’s music scene

hen I was 15, I decided I wanted to be in a band. At the time, my “band-mates” and I were all hanging out in cow pastures a lot, so we called the band SUK, which is a nifty acronym for Scared Uv Kows. The name was totally my idea, but unfortunately, I have zero musical talent. The rest of the band (all males) thought I could just be the tambourine girl. “Anyone can play the tambourine,” they said. “Just stand there and look good.” The band didn’t make it—possibly because I can’t play the tambourine— but at times I still feel the urge to scrawl SUK on binders, notebooks and playground equipment. Unified Soul is different. They’re still going strong after forming just nine months ago. Band members Tiare Johnson (lead vocals), Joshua Johnson (drums), Rico Manangan (guitar and vocals), Ben Sacapanio

(bass), Keoki Agcaoili (keyboards), Wilson Rapozo (also keyboards) and Matt Lilulama (vocals and token “eyecandy”) deliver fresh vocals and a sound that makes getting up and dancing absolutely mandatory. I’ve seen Unified Soul play a few times at Casanova in Makawao. Their music is not totally island, not really roots, not rock (although I’ve heard them perform a really good “Hotel California”) and not pop (they do smokin’ hot Prince covers, though). “Pop Reggae?” is how Tiare Johnson described the band when I asked. “Every memorable band has their own sound. We’re getting there. We’re getting close to defining what that is.” Johnson has amazing long, dark hair, multiple tattoos and an easy-going demeanor. She also puts out the barest whisper of the vibe that she will really mess you up if you hurt the people close to her. She speaks precisely, yet still

appears humble and gracious. The last time I saw Unified Soul perform was June 23, when they battled Natural Feeling and One Vibe and won the grand prize of a spot on KPOA’s Hot Hawaiian Nights. The show has featured some of Hawai‘i’s most talented musicians—Koauka, Maunalau, Raiatea Helm and Kapena. Now I’ve seen Casanova crowded and packed, but never have I seen it so alive as when Unified Soul appeared. Take a club full of pressing-for-action locals, add awesome island music and a good deal of Heineken and you have one hell of a party. Natural Feeling and One Vibe both played tight sets and the crowd clearly loved them. But Unified Soul just had a little bit more. “I think that we’re unique because the females in Hawai‘i bands are always behind the scenes,” Johnson said. “You’ll hear different female vocals versus the

female voice being featured. Something similar to our thing would be Hawaiian Style Band [which had a female lead], but there hasn’t been very many bands that feature the female voice since them.” Not only is Unified Soul heading to Oahu at the end of the month to film Hot Hawaiian Nights, they’re one of the bands opening the Katchafire concert at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) this weekend. “We’re lucky that we have people that believe in us,” Johnson said. “Karey [Oura] from Island Soul Entertainment called and asked us if we wouldn’t mind playing at the SolJah Fest… And of course we don’t mind! It’s a dream to play up on that stage. It’s been something that we’ve wanted. It’s awesome when you have a passion and desire to do something and then the opportunity comes to you.” For more info contact Joshua Johnson at 357-1496. MTW

Live Music PRINCE Planet Earth Boo. I’m really pissed off about this whole new Prince (err, excuse me, the artist formerly known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince) album. I was really excited about Planet Earth… until I heard it. Then I wanted to cry tears of blood. This isn’t Prince! I love Prince. I would crawl across rusty thumbtacks—naked, with a third degree sunburn—just to be near his purple, velvety, platform booted glory! I love Prince so much that when he preformed at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, I degraded myself to “That drunk chick who slipped past security and hopped onstage to freak Prince” status. Yes. I really freaked Prince. No, he did not respond. But he has great skin and we wear the same sized shoe. It could be perfect. I think the problem I’m having here is that it seems like Prince is evolving into something non-Prince-like. I think I’ll blame it on his whole conversion into the wonderful world of Jehovah’s Witness land. Since giving up holidays, obsessing over some magical “chosen” number and knocking on doors in a tie, Prince has gone down hill. Frankly, Planet Earth makes me want to dance like an old white guy. The problem, folks, is that Prince has a message… and it sure ain’t about pussy control. Not to get sidetracked, but “Pussy Control”—that is a great 100 percent Prince song. Here’s a quick comparison of how Prince’s message has changed, and not for the better: • Message behind Planet Earth Track 01: Save the earth, save the dolphins, save the whales and those adorable little seals being slaughtered in Canada. • Message behind “Pussy Control”: Pussy=Power. Prince>Pussy. So simple, so pure, so Prince. If you pick up Planet Earth expecting to get your freak on to some classic Prince sounds, you will be very disappointed. If you pick it up with an open heart and mind, you may be able to appreciate the new, holier-than-thou musician that he has become. I mean, he’s still Prince, he’s still a musical genius and he’s got great hair, but… I guess I’m not ready to let go of the ‘80s… or Christmas and my birthday. I hope that before his next album, Prince falls off the Jdub wagon and converts back to Hedonism. I’ll Amen to that. MTW

BIG SHOWS Love of Tango 3 - Friday, August 3. Oh, how I wish I could move like that! Since no one wants to watch me attempt to tango, we’ve got several international tango stars performing the passionate, fiery Argentine highlight dance of this year’s TangoFest Maui. Tickets: $20, $15. 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 242-7469. Summer Rootz Rager - Friday, August 3. Oshen is headlining this evening of urban Island music and authentic roots sounds. Wildly popular to an almost icon status in New Guinea, where he spent most of his childhood, O-shen is celebrating his new album called 1 Rebel. He’s also well loved on these islands, and he’s playing with special guests Don Carlos and Lakina. Presale tickets are on sale at www.presaleticketsonline.com. Tickets: $25. 10 p.m., Hard Rock Cafe, Lahaina. Katchafire - Saturday, August 4. These pioneers of the reggae revival from New Zealand are here on tour with a brand new third album for Island SoulJah Fest 2007. Their unique roots reggae sound and high energy performance will be joined by local favorites Unified Soul, Dani Girl, Bubs and OoklahTha-Moc. Tickets: $32, $28. 5:30 p.m. A & B Amphitheater, 242-7469.

TICKETS ON SALE Stephen Stills - Thu, Aug 9. This legendary rock, blues and country guitarist and singer/songwriter wrote the hits “Southern Cross,” “Love the One You’re With” and “Everybody’s Talkin At Me,” which, no lie, I had stuck in my head for seven straight days one time. I’m okay with that, because Stills, who worked with legends like Buffalo Springfield and was buddies with Jimi Hendrix, is responsible for some of rock and roll’s greatest moments. Plus, it was an awesome song. Tickets: $45, $35. 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC, 2427469 Maui Calls - Fri, Aug 10. Tickets would be on sale if there were any tickets TO sell. This event was practically sold out before it was ever announced, so you and I can wallow in our sadness over not going to the MACC annual gala fundraiser. Sure, they’re going to have amazing wine from local wineries and delectable dishes by some of Maui’s best chefs. And, yeah, there’ll be a tons of fun entertainment, art and exhibits, all set to a paniolo theme. But, hey, we’ll find something much better to do this Friday, and then we’ll thumb our noses at those lucky bastards in Kahului. Tickets: Sold Out!, A & B Amphitheater, 242-7469.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Every sign has its ruling planet, and yes, you’re ruled by the sun. That’s how amazing and badass you are. You get to own all that radiance and power this week, and embody it as only you can do, but please don’t let it go to your head. Humility is a virtue that’s sometimes hard for your average shining, brilliant Leo to master. Being humble could come in handy in the weeks to come—resulting, ironically, in more glory, attention, and adoration.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) End the internal debate at once. Sometimes you just have to make a decision, and resolve to simply live with the consequences. In this case, there are too many unknowns. Making a clear choice is just plain impossible; nothing’s the least bit obvious. It sucks to have to make a leap of faith while partially blindfolded, but let me assure you—it’s far better than not leaping at all. Let me also remind you: you almost always land on your feet, regardless of the mess you jump into. You will this time, too.

Maui Recycling Service If not now, when?

Don’t mess with success. I offer this trite cliché as valid advice, because your admirable ideas to shake things up and try something different will almost certainly backfire this week (making you doubt yourself even more than you already do). Save those great ideas and experiments for another week, when they’re more likely to succeed. For now, go with what you know. When in doubt, go retro. You don’t need to be cutting edge; your forte is being classy, not trendy. Why bother with the new when you can do the tried-and-true better than anyone you know?

Poor Pluto. First it was demoted to “dwarf planet” status, and recently scientists discovered that there are even bigger versions of those roaming the edges of our solar system. What does this mean, astrologically? From some perspectives it could indicate that Scorpio stock is way down, that what you have to offer is steadily losing value. But I think it’s actually indicative of a new era—a new way of being a Scorpio. Our society is sorely in need of fresh, revolutionary perspectives about sex and death—two of your primal foci. No one is more qualified to figure out how to take what we think and feel about our sexuality and mortality and turn it on its head.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) In Centralia, Pennsylvania, unpredictable subterranean coal fires have been burning for decades. A while back the government declared the place too dangerous for habitation and offered to buy residents’ houses. Nearly everyone moved; less than a dozen die-hards remain. I can’t explain why they stuck it out, except, perhaps, out of sheer stubbornness; surely practically everything they ever loved about the place must have vanished with the fleeing residents. Are you still inhabiting somewhere (perhaps an idea, a relationship, or a situation) that no longer resembles the place you moved into? Maybe it changed for the better, but if it got worse, isn’t it time you moved out, especially if there’s a good alternative deal on offer?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You might prefer not to multi-task. In general, you might even prove to be more efficient when you focus on only one thing at a time. This week, however, that’s a luxury you can’t afford, as there are likely to be thousands or millions of demands on your attention. If you give them each a number and ask them to wait their turn, you’ll soon be facing a mutiny. This is where you have to take your organization skills to new levels, and figure out how to do three, five, or eight things at once, without killing yourself or screwing them all up.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Many Aquarians devote significant chunks of their lives perfecting skills that arguably have little practical purpose, beyond being an enjoyable “waste of time.” They write poetry, they play ping-pong, they build model airplanes, and so on. Sure, at the outer edges of those eclectic interests lie possible sources of income or notoriety, or chances to make the world a significantly better place. I know you do what you do because it’s fun, and no other reason, but now is a good time to explore just how viable those options might be. How far can you take this obsessive hobby of yours, really? This week, find out.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Try to remember how insecure everybody is. Sometimes you get so caught up in your own selfdoubts that you forget that everybody else is experiencing something like them, too. Consequently you take on more negativity than you ought to, convinced that any shit going down has everything to do with your shortcomings, when it could actually stem from someone else’s fears and doubts, or something else altogether. Because most of the crap floating your way this week has virtually nothing to do with you, I ask you to remember that we’re all weak, sometimes, and imperfect. Then you can quit feeling bad about the situation, and start improving it instead.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Rams are supposed to recreate reality to suit them. It’s what you do. I know I’ve frequently asked you to temper that urge, and be sensitive to situations that you shouldn’t butt your big head into. Still, I hope you haven’t lost the knack, because this week it’s time for you to take charge, whip things into shape, and make them conform to your own (in this case) brilliant ideas about how things should be. Don’t take no for an answer. Be bossy. You know what’s best, this time, even if others don’t want to admit it. Make them see the light. They may be too stubborn to thank you later, but never mind that; most of us will.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I have a friend whose teeth hurt when she eats things that are too sweet. Another feels weary and lethargic if he doesn’t do his daily stretches and workout. I get slightly chapped lips whenever I’m stressed out or especially sleep deprived. The point is we’re all given subtle hints about how to best take care of ourselves from our bodies, dreams, and other sources. You’ve been ignoring yours, or denying them. Unfortunately, when you don’t heed these gentle reminders, you’re usually given more forceful ones you can’t so easily disregard. Don’t let it come to that, please.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) There have been so many times you’ve been forced to eat your words. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were forgotten after you chewed them up, forced them down, and shat them out. Unfortunately, they often keep coming back to haunt you. Sometimes this serves as a useful reminder about what kinds of mistakes and missteps to avoid in the future; usually it’s just annoying, because you’re not about to forget those hard-learned lessons. This week, if someone tries to make you chew up and swallow something you said more than a year ago, consider yourself within your rights to spit it back in his face, and gently assure him that you don’t need to taste that particular dish ever again.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You can get sunburn on a cloudy day. It might be windy and chilly, so you wouldn’t even notice the UV rays scorching your skin. I don’t believe in living in fear of unforeseeable consequences, but sometimes-preventative measures are just so easy that it’s pointless not to do them. Slapping on a coat of sunscreen would take just a few seconds. Consider similarly simple protective efforts this week and in general; they could keep you safe from boatloads of suffering and misery. They may also prove to be entirely unnecessary, but do you really want to find out the hard way?

Why can’t we get all the people together in the world that we really like and then just stay together? I guess that wouldn’t work. Someone would leave. Someone always leaves. Then we would have to say good-bye. I hate goodbyes. I know what I need. I need more hellos. – Snoopy

Sweet Life Fruit Co.

Friends, lovers, countrymen… stalkers, co-workers, ex-bosses… former landlords, bar buddies, strange neighbors with the roosters running wild and the mangy, barking dogs in cages… I am honored to stand here before you today. For the past 10 years, I have watched you—mostly in deep admiration and respect, other times in slight disgust and confusion, on rare occasions with a fire in my loin and a thirst to quench—and made silent observations on the way you live and work and play. In turn, you have helped me grow, and from each other we have learned much. You might’ve found out just how much when I started writing this column nearly five years ago. That’s when all my skills as a professional wallflower truly came to life. Without ever speaking to me, you told me things about your life that you couldn’t have told anyone, not even yourself. It was somehow comforting, you know, to discover your secrets—your awkwardness, your vulnerabilities, and your mistakes. They were so much like my own. And you taught me that it’s all about the details. The way somebody looks at you when you’re telling a story, whether they watch your face or look around the room, or if they smile slightly, stifle a yawn or nod excitedly, or if they remember a detail about the last time you talked, or the way they stand, and eventually walk away. Or even, who they go talk to next, and if they cast a glance at somebody else along the way, and how they greet that person. While on the job, I’ve had to interview many people, some talented artists, others trying to just be heard, and I have almost always found something I could relate to in that person. If we talk long enough, they usually tell me things they’ve done or felt or wanted to do that I never would’ve expected, or might’ve liked to try myself. We live vicariously through each other when we talk. That’s the beauty of it. So when you go out into the world now, remember this: you’re not alone. Every one of us has a tale filled with disappointments, accomplishments, hilarity, embarrassment, boredom, anxiety and perhaps a really bad pizza here and there. We all seem connected in some way, depending on which aspect of somebody’s life you ask about. And seemingly, on Maui, we are granted more opportunities to relate to the people who crowd us on the beaches or at the supermarket—whether it’s the time we seem to have more of on the island, or the fact that we have less bodies to work with—and so the potential for happy surprises abound. For a time I thought I was sick of seeing the same people over and over again on this tiny little rock. But, of course, now that I’ve left on a jet plane, all those people are flooding my mind with their stories—their secrets, their surprises, their occasional stifled yawns—and I miss them. And now, the only thing that comforts me is the hope that I will have the chance to meet more of you nutballs and inspiring folk. You know, so I can exploit the hell out of you for my own evil, journalistic purposes. You’ve taught me well, so thanks. Now let’s RAWWWWK! Samantha Campos has left the building. MTW
