LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR HOT TOPIC Your interesting and provocative article on sun power could use some amplification (“Free the Sun,” July 7, 2005). You underrate the success of solar water heating in Hawai’i. Statewide there are approximately 77,000 solar roofs, almost one in five homes–one in four counting just single-family homes.

About 25,000 of these units at last count came since 1996 under a program in which electric utilities pay a $750 instant rebate to customers who install solar water heating. In all, over $18 million in rebates have been dispersed. A tax credit is available worth 35 percent of the cost of the solar system. Most people recover installation costs in about four years.

In total, customers who install solar in Hawai’i will save over $100 million over the lives of their systems. Perhaps more importantly to many, over 1.6 million barrels of oil will be saved.

Hawai’i’s embrace of solar water heating should be a point of pride for our people and utilities, which promote solar water heating very actively. Imagine if we could raise penetration of solar water heating to two in five homes, or three. Wow. That would be wonderful.

Finally, on net-energy-metering, we will soon announce Public Utilities Commission approval of new rules–based on changes in the law approved by the Legislature and supported in their final version by HECO, MECO and HELCO–that should make renewable energy more attractive to home- and small-business owners.

The size of solar, wind, hydro and biomass renewable systems which may return excess electricity to the grid and receive credit at retail prices has been raised to 50 kilowatts. Shortly we will also be seeking approval for new rules to allow NEM users

to reconcile the exchange with their utilities annually rather than monthly, again increasing the value of small-to-medium sized renewable energy systems to our customers.

Family Affair Maui Bulletin workers unite!

At least they haven’t had to stand there for two years There were about half a dozen of them, standing on Mahalani Street in Kahului just outside The Maui News headquarters. They carried signs saying things like “Stop the Stall” and “2 Years Too Long.”

They stood there, occasionally waving to honking cars, for just an hour on July 13, 2005—first between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and then again from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Not so grandiose as a strike or even a work slow-down, the half dozen people on Mahalani were workers from The Maui Bulletin, a free weekly shopper published by the same parent corporation as The Maui News. They were holding what labor organizers call an “informational picket”—a brief, poorly attended gathering calling attention to the fact that Bulletin workers are tired of having spent the last two years negotiating a new contract.

“We think it’s time to make the county know about this little family affair,” said Wayne E. Cahill, administrative officer for The Newspaper Guild’s Local 39117, who’s acting as representative for the Bulletin workers. “We tried to put an ad in the Bulletin to tell our story and [Maui News publisher and general manager] Joe Bradley turned it down. Reportedly he turned 45 different shades of red.”

Bradley had little comment on the matter. “We’re going to continue to meet with them,” he said. “The last proposal we made was last Tuesday. It was proposal Number 73. We’ll continue to bargain with them.”

Though only six staffers were on hand for the informational picket, Cahill said the entire seven-strong Bulletin staff of

sales representatives, production people and clerical workers are in it together. Their complaints are typical of those facing a big corporation: “substandard pay and benefits,” “abusive management practices,” working up to 10 hours a day without overtime and so forth.

“Sales managers take the plum accounts and leave the drippings [to Bulletin workers],” said Cahill. “The workers have been handed a list of rights worse than if there was no union.

They’ve seen how The Maui News [employees] are treated, they say how they [in contrast] have been treated and they said something has to change.”

Hawai’i Publications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wheeling, West Virginiabased Ogden Newspapers, which runs 39 dailies, a bunch of weeklies and shoppers in 11 states, owns The Maui News and Maui Bulletin, as well as the Lahaina News and Haleakala Times.

Today G. Ogden Nutting, a longtime Republican Party contributor and part owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, runs the chain. But the irony is that H. C. Ogden, who founded what became Ogden Newspapers way back in 1890, was a progressive. Ogden’s Wheeling Intelligencer in West Virginia pushed for the Workman’s Compensation Act, agitated for a state health department, backed a state child labor law and called for mine safety inspections.

Then again, newspapers and labor have always formed an odd bond. Usually pro-labor in matters of editorial direction, they can be rough places to work with long hours and poor pay. Many papers—including the one you’re holding right now—rely on unpaid interns, usually kids doing research and other odd jobs in exchange for college credit and experience.

A couple years ago I attended an investigative news seminar in which one of the instructors— a veteran reporter at a Northern California daily—told us in the same breath that she was her paper’s union rep and it was often necessary for journalists to work unpaid weekends to finish stories.

Compared with some media corporations, Ogden is unabashedly pro-labor. After all, they’re actually negotiating with the Bulletin workers’ union representative—a relatively minor concession some media giants refuse to do.

Take the 104-paper chain MediaNews Group, for instance. Based in Denver, Colorado and run by notorious newspaper boss William Dean Singleton, the chain bought the then century-old Long Beach Press-Telegram in 1997. Immediately after the sale, Singleton reportedly threw out all union contracts, forced all 500 employees to re-interview for their jobs, slashed pay and benefits for those he retained. Armed security guards escorted the rest from the building.

The paper that emerged from the bloodletting was a shadow of its former self. Its stories are little more than rewritten press releases and it’s staffed with kids itching to collect enough clips to get a job at a “real” paper.

In any case, neither Bradley nor Cahil wished to talk about the possibility that the two-year long negotiations would break down and the Bulletin workers would strike.

“I don’t have any comment on that,” said Bradley.

As for Cahill, he said that the workers would be very happy with a settlement.

“We haven’t been talking about a strike,” he said. “Even if there’s a strike, you still have to get to a settlement.” MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said about SB294, a bill increasing the hourly minimum wage, which she recently allowed to become law: “[I’m] disappointed that this bill is void of any relief to the business community at a time when Hawai’i’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the nation.”

What she didn’t say: At nearly the same time Lingle held her nose and gave workers a whopping 50 cents more per hour, she gave plenty of relief to the business community by vetoing a bill that would have put gender protections into our state’s employment discrimination law. In other words, Lingle kept it legal for companies to hire and fire people based on sexual orientation. In fairness, we can’t dump all the blame for this on Lingle’s shoulders—though the bill she vetoed had easily passed the state legislature, that body made no effort to override her veto.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, JULY 13 Today the governor’s office sent out a press release trumpeting the fact that the U.S. Department of Justice only has four concerns on the infamous AkakaStevens Bill that would provide official recognition of Native Hawaiians. Just four? How miraculous. Missing from the press release and accompanying news stories is any mention of the intense irony surrounding the second concern: “Amending the language to make it clear that the bill does not interfere with the operations of the U.S. military in Hawai’i or affect military readiness.” Okay, so let me get this straight: the federal government wants to give some degree of sovereignty back to the Hawaiian people, as long as they don’t try anything stupid like exercising that sovereignty by trying to kick out the U.S. military, which seized the islands a hundred years ago from the Native Hawaiians. Did I miss anything?

Now unless I’m totally reading this wrong, the whole thing looks an awful lot like the kind of sovereignty they have in Iraq, where the Iraqi people are free to do anything they like except ask us to leave.

THURSDAY, JULY 14 Even without the “protections” promised by the Akaka-Stevens Bill, Native Hawaiians are exercising their First Amendment free speech rights, which they do enjoy from time to time. Like the other day, when a bunch of them trekked over to the Cameron Center in Wailuku to protest plans to build the 14-foot diameter Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) atop Haleakala.

Actually, they were mostly protesting the fact that scientists want to paint the 92-foot tall observatory housing the scope white. On clear days, the observatory—like the rest of

the scientific stations on the Haleakala summit—will be visible all over central Maui. “I don’t want to see it,” activist Charles Kauluwehi “Charlie” Maxwell, Sr. reportedly told the attending scientists, according to today’s Maui News. “Find a different color, where it’s not such an insult.” Hmm… here’s an idea, Charlie: how about you find a better reason. Now I know Hawaiians consider Haleakala sacred land, but come on. There are already a bunch of other telescopes—some used by the U.S. Air Force for military purposes—atop the mountain. It’s not like the summit already doesn’t shine like a diamond on clear days. Think, people!

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

About the only shocking thing about the decision by the public access cable channel Akaku’s Board of Directors to fire station president Sean McLaughlin on Wednesday is that it’s taken until today for The Maui News to run a story outlining allegations from McLaughlin that the whole thing is “politically motivated.” What other possible motivation would there be?

McLaughlin has publicly opposed the takeover of the Akaku board by individuals loyal more to developers like Everett Dowling and development in general than opening television production to the public. The latest such member, Charlie Jencks, is the president of the Maui Contractors Association—a lobbying arm on behalf of the construction industry—and a close friend of Dowling. In fact, Jencks recently testified before the state legislature that Akaku was getting too much money from Honolulu. Oh yeah, politically motivated is a generous way to put it. In any case, I’m sure this will be the end of Akaku’s troubles and it’ll be nothing but smooth sailing ahead for the station.

SATURDAY, JULY 16 Ahhh… patronage: will its magic never die?

On this, the 60th anniversary of the first suc-

cessful test of a nuclear weapon, Governor Linda Lingle sent out a release naming the nine lucky “volunteers” who get to sit on her Maui Council of Advisors—a panel that meets on the third Thursday of every month to discuss Maui’s “needs.” State campaign finance records show Lingle had a pretty easy time picking the advisors. Five of the officials—John Henry, Madge Schaefer, Janice Shishido, Kalei Sombelon and Shan Steinmark (curiously misspelled as “Stan Steinmark” in Lingle’s press release)—all contributed on average $200 to Lingle’s campaign committee since 2001. Nahhh, it’s probably nothing.

The world famous National Association of Counties held its rockin’ 70th annual conference this weekend on Oahu, but the blow-out was marred by 200 no-shows who were prompted by criticism back home about public officials using taxpayer funds to pay for a “junket” to Hawai’i.

But 1,800 bureaucrats and council members managed to swallow their pride and show! And some of them got to hear our very own Councilman Dain Kane moderate a panel discussion called “What’s Smokin’ in Your County?” on various anti-smoking ordinances throughout the land. As you all know, way back in 2002 Kane masterminded Maui County’s own restaurantsmoking ban, which we all know has been just a smashing success. I mean, look around—do you see people smoking in restaurants? There’s not a—oh, wait, yeah, people are still smoking in restaurants. Bars too, but in some weird compromise they were never part of the law to begin with.

Guess it has something to do with the fact that no one’s really enforcing the law in the first place.

Here Come the Rich People!

And they’re going to live at Kapalua Mauka Because the Kapalua Resort doesn’t make enough money or cater to the whims of enough rich people, the Maui Land and Pineapple Company is going to make it bigger. Nearly a thousand acres bigger, in fact.

On July 13, 2005, the Maui County Land Use Committee began discussing the the proposed zoning change that would make possible the company’s 925-acre luxury resort called Kapalua Mauka. The committee also made a site inspection, though it took no action on the plan.

Kapalua Mauka is a very big deal. It will include 690 single- and multi-family homes—with lots starting at $500,000 and easily surpassing $1 million—and expand the Kapalua Village Golf Course. ML&P documents filed with the state Land Use

Even more amazing were the company’s land appraisals, which showed a pretty even swap—Mill Town’s value came in at $1.5 million while the Kapalua land rated $1.6 million.

You read that right: $1.6 million for 226 acres of beautiful, prime, virgin Kapalua land.

That pencils out to about $7,079.65 per acre— arguably the best Hawai’i land deal in the last century. Sure, the land is a long strip with a gulch running through it, but it’s in KAPALUA, home of the Mercedes Championship, the Ritz-Carlton and New York Yankees manager Joe Torre’s vacation home. Needless to say, one state official immediately cried foul.

Saying the appraisals undervalued the Kapalua land by not taking into account Maui Land’s development plans, state Representative Alex Sonson (D, Pearl CityWaipahu) said the company was getting a

The project’s purpose is to meet the estimated demand for “high-end neighbor island properties.” Because ML&P assumes few of Kapalua Mauka’s projected thousands of new residents will live year-round in the new estates and mansions, the company figures that the project will bring just 17 additional school-age children to the Westside.

According to The Maui News account of the meeting that ran July 15, 2005, the committee mostly concerned itself with the 173 affordable housing units ML&P has agreed to build to secure passage— units that will, in fact, sit nowhere near Kapalua Mauka. Just one person spoke in opposition, and he was worried about the current state of development outpacing the construction of new infrastructure.

In fact, there’s plenty about Kapalua Mauka that should cause concern. By far the most controversial aspect is what local real estate observers refer to as “the land swap.”

In October, 2003, ML&P officials negotiated a deal with the state Board of Land and Natural Resources to complete Kapalua Mauka by trading their 1.4-acre industrial Mill Town Center in Waipahu on Oahu for a whopping 226 acres of hilly Kapalua they had been leasing to grow pineapple.

Other issues raise eyebrows, if not questions.

As with all big developments, there’s the matter of water. Maui is still considered drought country, and in addition to big Westside projects like the company’s Puluhua community and Amfac’s Ka’anapali 2020, Maui Land estimates that at build-out Kapalua Mauka will suck between 250,000 and 350,000 gallons of water each day from nearby aquifers, the Honokohau Stream—currently used by Hawaiian taro farmers—and the Napili Stream.

Almost as an after thought is the fact that Kapalua Mauka residents will be very far from proper hospital care.

“Emergency medical services to the Property are provided from the Maui Memorial Medical Center in Kahului, located approximately 25 to 35 miles away,” reads the LUC’s Findings of Fact on Kapalua Mauka, published June 24, 2004. “[This] is outside the time recommended for emergency treatment.”

Perhaps this isn’t an issue at all. Currently, all Kapalua residents and guests live such a distance from the Maui Memorial ER, and they don’t seem to be complaining. And as ML&P officials point out, the Ka’anapali 2020 project includes a new West Maui hospital and emergency room.

In any case, Maui Land has no problem with it, and in the end that may be all that matters. MTW

POLICE BLOTTER In an early-morning shootout on June 4 in the Homewood housing complex in Pittsburgh, two undercover officers and suspect Keith Carter, 19, exchanged a total of at least 103 gunshots and missed every single time. ROCKET SCIENTISTS In the course of a traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Kingdom City, Mo., in June, Missouri Highway Patrol officers found a 3-foot-long rocket with an electric launcher, attached to an elaborate system of pulleys in the trunk of the car of two men, Michael Ray Sullivan, 41, and Joseph C. THIS WEEK IN MUGWORT Officials in Montgomery County, Md., regard the feathery green plant called the mugwort an “alien invasive plant” and periodically lament its presence in the county’s parks, according to a June Washington Post report. But local Koreans, who call the plant “souk,” consider it a delicacy in seafood soup and rice cakes, and have eagerly been digging it out of the parks for free, except that it’s illegal to remove weeds from the parks.

Consequently, according to the Post, county officials have simultaneously undertaken (a) a pilot program to see if goats could be trained to root out unwanted flora and (b) a steppedup program to convince the Koreans to obey the law against removing mugwort.

CSI: VIENNA In May, Councilman Manfred Juraczka in Vienna, Austria, proposed to alleviate the city’s growing problem with pet droppings by collecting DNA samples from all registered dogs so that the soilers can be identified and their owners fined. BRIGHT IDEA An 82-year-old man who had locked himself out of his still-running car in Glen Burnie, Md., in June, was hospitalized with first and second-degree burns after attempting to siphon gasoline from the car using an electric vacuum cleaner (a spark from which ignited gasoline vapors). He told police that he wanted to force the engine to stop by removing the rest of the gasoline.

HIS NAME WOULD BE ‘WOOD’ In June, community leaders in a largely gay neighborhood in Toronto unveiled a 13-foothigh statue of Alexander Wood, one of their historical heroes, who according to legend had been pressured out of town in the early 1800s over a sex scandal. Magistrate Wood, investigating a heterosexual rape in which the victim claimed to have scratched her attacker’s genitals, rounded up numerous suspects and zealously examined each for such a scratch.

Doing a Good Job

It’s not just Karl Rove anymore Since Karl Rove surfaced last week as the White House official who probably unmasked a covert CIA agent, new developments appear to confirm that the deputy chief of staff and chief Bush political strategist has committed treason: •Newsweek has published, and Time has authenticated, a Time reporter’s notes about his crucial conversation with Rove. “Spoke to Rove on double super secret background for about two [minutes] before he went on vacation,” Matt Coopers’ notes read.

Rove told Cooper that “[former ambassador and Iraq war critic] Joe Wilson’s wife... apparently works at the [Central Intelligence] Agency on WMD issues.”

•In the past Bush Administration officials have repeatedly denied that Rove was involved and promised to fire whomever outted Plame. Now, rather than proclaim his innocence, Bush and his PR flacks are stonewalling. “This is a question relating to an ongoing investigation,” his press secretary repeats to an increasing torrent of journalists’ pointed questions.

•Denizens of official Washington invariably issue a powerful, categorical denial— sometimes accompanied by the threat of libel litigation—whenever an allegation is untrue. Rove’s silence on Treasongate can’t convict him in a court of law. That comes later. Still, it speaks volumes.

Imagine, for a few paragraphs, that you were the U.S. Director of Central Intelligence. Rove’s seditious behavior requires you to wonder about the possible extent of his inside job against U.S. national security. Did Rove act alone?

Probably not.

His Plame operation, no doubt conceived in league with Dick Cheney and other high-ranking scoundrels, may merely represent the tip of a huge iceberg of duplicity. How else did “Bush’s brain” subvert our intelligence community? Are Rove’s intimates, who include Bush himself, running interference for him out of personal loyalty, or are they trying to cover up their own treasonous acts? Someone at Langley provided highly classified person-

nel information to Rove, a dirty tricks specialist and pollster. Who? In 1985 CIA traitor Aldrich Ames sold the KGB the names of every U.S. spy in the Soviet Union in return for $2 million. Arrests and executions soon wiped out America’s human assets in the Soviet Union. As they were caught unprepared by one shocker after another— glasnost, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the implosion of the USSR—intelligence professionals suspected a well-placed mole as the culprit. But Ames wasn’t caught for another nine years.

Rove, on the other hand, has already been found out as a likely traitor to the United States. Now we must work backwards. Does his exposure help to explain some of the Administration’s most baffling foreign policy blunders? No matter how remote, we must now consider the possibility that Karl Rove may be in the employ of, and/or receiving money from, a terrorist organization such as Al Qaeda.

Alternatively, could he be in the employ of a hostile foreign government? If he betrayed a CIA agent, Rove is a traitor and therefore capable of anything. Only an exhaustive investigation of his and his associates’ anti-

American activities, up to and including those committed by George W. Bush, can resolve these questions.

Internal sabotage offers a tempting explanation for the fact that so much has gone wrong for the United States since 2001. After 9/11 Osama bin Laden was in Pakistan—which had financed the Taliban and trained the hijackers at its camps—but Bush shocked analysts by attacking Afghanistan and Iraq instead. Was Bush’s refusal to search for bin Laden in his nation of residence the result of spectacular incompetence—or a continuing alliance with the same Islamists his father’s presidency had armed and funded?

Are we losing the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq because of Rumsfeld’s stubborn insistence on understaffing the military?

Or are our leaders intentionally dragging out combat to accomplish their masters’ aims: increasing the popularity of radical Islam and the recruitment of terrorists? Even Bush’s domestic policies, from tax cuts paid to the rich people least likely to stimulate the economy to his attack on Social Security, seem designed to undermine U.S. stability and prosperity. Was Bush crossing his fingers when he swore to preserve and defend the constitution?

Maybe, maybe not. The point is that we don’t know. But we must find out. National security is bipartisan. Democrats and Republicans may be divided over various ideological conflicts, but all patriotic Americans should be able to agree on a zero-tolerance policy for treason.

Rove, those who worked with him and anyone who protected him must go. MTW

It looked dicey for a time, but Maui Waveriders Bar & Grill will get to open in Lahaina. On July 29, 2005, there will finally be a new tenant at the old Maui Brews location.

The Maui County Department of Liquor didn’t make it easy for owner James R. Mansell, who already runs two other establishments on Oahu. At two Liquor Commission hearings, Mansell had to listen to commissioners talk of “violations,” “the FBI” and even “kidnapping.”

Background and criminal checks are done on all liquor license applications, and apparently Mansell’s record is quite detailed (citing privacy reasons, First Deputy Corporation Counsel Tracy Fujita Villarosa said during the July 13, 2005 Liquor Commission hearing that the department would not be making it public).

Though the LC declined to recommend that Mansell’s Rider Group is “fit and proper,” the facts are clear. Mansell’s bars on Oahu have been around for four years without any violations. He’s never had any felony convictions of any kind. He had one violation for a “petty misdemeanor” some years ago, for which he paid a $100 fine.

Yet he does have, as LC Director Franklyn Silva pointed out at the July 13 hearing, an “extensive police record”—lots of arrests dating back 20 years on a variety of allegations. But in none of those cases were any charges brought, trials set or convictions handed down.

“I don’t have anything pending that I know of,” Mansell told the commission, mentioning that he had to go through a “12-step program” six years ago. “I had to change a lot.

I’m a changed man.”

Given all that, two commissioners— Manuel Moniz, Jr. and Frances Meshulam— voted against Mansell. They cited his arrest record as well as discrepancies between various reports concerning his height, eye color, place of birth and social security number, even though Mansell showed during the hearing that the differences were trivial and most likely the product of typographical errors.

Five commissioners thought otherwise, which is why Mansell is opening next week. “I will do a good job,” he told them.

Given the controversies that surrounded him before he even opened, he better do more than that if he wishes to stay open.

There was to be a vigil, I was told, at a public park in Kihei. It was going to be a protest on the part of Reinstated Hawaiian Nation movement. They are nationalists who seek independence from the United States government. It was to be a solemn and serious affair.

I asked when it was to take place.

All they said was “in the afternoon.”

When I got to the park I saw children playing, barbeques and birthday parties. But I saw no vigil, rally, protest or any signs of such activities. I went back several times, but never found anything.

Several hours passed and I again returned, hoping for a sign. No vigil.

It was now late afternoon; the sun was setting making the shadows long and distorted. People were going home. The children I saw playing earlier were now asleep on their mother’s shoulders, their food consumed. I later found out that in fact there never was any vigil.

The man in charge of the vigil was Henry Noa, and he’s actually many people at once: citizen, diplomat, freedom fighter, guerrilla and salesman. He’s Prime Minister of the Reinstated Hawaiian Nation. It’s a nationalist movement that characterizes its adversaries as “the masters of the world.”

Noa is like a peasant king on a never-ending search for legitimacy.

He possesses no nation, no banana republic to roost over. His is a make believe republic where citizens exist only in the realm of the strategic: supporters of The Cause.

A few months ago I met him at Mama Ding’s House of Pasteles in Kahului. I found him sitting under a blood red silhouette of a crude American flag painted onto a window. It was 9 a.m., and he was eating pasteles and drinking coffee. He offered to buy me breakfast.

Noa is a taciturn man with a large face and expressive eyes. Although he is solidly built, time has taken its toll and he has developed a paunch. His mouth is missing a tooth. His salt and peppery hair was thick and slightly mussed as if he had just awoken.

Seated to my right was Nelson Armitage, a man who carries the title of “Defense Minister” for the Reinstated Hawaiian Nation. He contributed very little to the conversation except an occasional verbal support to his Prime Minister. When Noa made a point Armitage thought especially brilliant, he responded with a “10four!”

In conversations Noa seeks to dictate exclusively. He is The Boss, and he’s got The Answers. He spoke very carefully, making tiny speeches that were canned like those of a tenured professor who lectures constantly.

They sounded well rehearsed and worn out.

Prime Minister Noa has a problem most people who carry such a lofty title never have to worry about: he lacks a government. Instead of bureaucrats and clerks, he has converts and activists. He must create his job by bringing about a feeling that only he can deliver the moral justice that will set right the bleak realities of Hawaiian history.

“What we, as Hawaiian people must learn is how to use the legal system to represent us,” he told me. “I

I asked what he meant by that.

“There have been so many different proposals over the last 112 years,” he said. “Our people have all this different information on what sovereignty can be, should be, that it has divided our people. We are moving in all different

Even the popular slang term from North America, “the Mainland,” inspires powerful feelings of exasperation and wounded dignity, automatically relegating Hawai’i to “minor” status. It’s these politics of envy and indignation that fuel the reinstated Hawaiian Nation movement.

At one point during my research for this story, I obtained a copy of the movement’s manifesto, titled The Lawful Government of Hawaii has Returned from Exile. It states in part that, “the reinstatement

ple—one takes orders and one whips them together. Both are very friendly, informative on the menu and they tend to make good suggestions.

For the first time kabob visitor, the menu can look a bit helter-skelter. It shows all the various salad, pupu and kabob combinations available. It takes up several boards and has lots of bright colors. People should really take the time to read all the available options before ordering. Otherwise, they might want to kick themselves for not adding an inexpensive kabob or substitute veggie side to their meal.

You name it, they’ve got it: steak, chicken, fish, shrimp, tofu, hummus, curry, chili, burgers, salads, rice, salsas, spices, sauces, dressings, cheeses, and probably some other stuff I missed. The coolest part about the menu is CHOICE. Unlike so many other restaurants, the Kahuna recognizes that culinary sovereignty lies with the customer.

Whatever you’re in the mood for, you should be able to find it here at an economical price. There’s always a $5 plate lunch, plus the Kama’aina perk of a free soda with a regular meal (Hawai’i ID required.)

Pupus range in price from $4-$6.50; salads from $3.95-$6.95; burgers cost $6.95; kabobs run $6.95$9.50 and bigger, more inclusive meals range in price from $5.95 to $11.95.

One time I opted for the Chef’s Choice, the Indian Blackened Ahi Steak Plate. It’s seared and blackened ahi tuna with what the Kahuna calls “traditional silk road spices.” They serve it sashimi-style over Molokai

mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus and coconut curry sauce, then top it with mango chipotle salsa and a wasabi yogurt sauce. I loved the sound of all that, except for the yogurt sauce. It was no problem, and they were more than happy to leave it off.

But for the most part, I’m an indecisive customer. On a recent visit I struggled between ordering a fresh salad with an extra tofu kabob or a grilled Indian spiced pita with babbaghanoosh. In the end, I put my faith in the creator of Kahuna’s special kabobs and ordered something completely different: the No Ka Oi chicken kabob with three scoops of brown rice and world-famous teriyaki sauce. Oh, and I traded the mac salad for steamed fresh vegetables. They only penalized me 75 cents for the exchange and it was totally worth it.

The Kahuna sure knows how to put eight inches of delicious meat on a stick, fill it with lots of flavor and then couch it on healthy rice and veggies. The experience was made better by eating on an outdoor table in the cool shade where I could look at lots of trinkets, listen to some Sublime and watch all the commotion on Front Street. MTW

I believe that you have to work hard every time to make good food. If someone comes to eat and has three good meals then the fourth one is bad, then they tell all their friends about that one meal and then, you know, you are done.

I have worked at Kahuna Kabobs for about two years now. I heard about it through a friend who I worked with at the health food store. He knew me as a person and said, “You would like it here,” so I went and got the job. I was born in Chicago but my aunty and uncle have lived here for about 30 years and my family has always visited every year.

I have probably spent more than half of my life here but I have lived solely in Hawai’i for seven years. As soon as I graduated I got on a plane and started working practically the next day. I tried to go to college but it just doesn’t work when there’s surf and sun.

I have worked at Kahuna’s the longest out of the staff of about six. I love to cook so it’s great for me because I can do just that. I don’t have anyone telling me how to do my job and I can cook the way I know will make good product.

Scotty, the owner, is really like an owner/worker and he is here all the time. Basically he owns it and I help him run it. We both cook and get all the food ordered and stocked.

I really believe in this place. The restaurants that you go to and think, “That is a great place” and keep on going back have all been around for 15 to 20 years. Kahuna’s has only been around for five years but we are already getting popular.

I think this place is going to get huge. MTW

DJ Cheb i Sabbah Friday, 10 p.m. at Casanova [DJ/WORLD MUSIC] Cheb means “young, having an opinion and good looking.”

Sabbah means “morning.” Cheb I Sabbah literally means “young of the morning.” And it’s also the big name world music spinner who will grace us again with his presence here on Maui. Originally born in Constantine, Algeria in 1947, cheb i sabbah began his turntablist career in Paris just a couple years after he and his family left Algeria in 1962. Cheb i sabbah is the DJ name he took only 14 years ago, and it’s his third incarnation in the world of spinning records. In the beginning of his career he spun American soul music on 7” vinyl. Near the end of the 1960s he’d made it to New York where he joined and then toured with Living Theatre. Finally, he made his way to San Francisco where he’s raised two children and worked in theatre as well as continuing to DJ and produce world music. He has said in several interviews that he prefers DJ-ing to theatre because it’s simpler in that he must only rely on himself. He remains in San Francisco where he is a resident DJ at the Blue Cube. His styles have much changed since the original American soul. And his influence now comes from all over the world. Apparently he has a following that some call “Cheb-i-ites”. It’s to be expected, as he has a way with taking traditional music from Asia, Africa and Arabia and then adding modern elements. His CD releases have received rave reviews for being spiritual, danceable and profoundly enjoyable. I had the pleasure of hearing some samples off his newest release La Kahena, Les Voix Du Maghreb and my ears were tickled with lovely voices singing accompanied by what sounds to me like symbols, chanting, stomping and drums.

Just this last September, he was winner of the “Best Dance Music” award at the Hollywood Spiritual Film & Entertainment Festival. That’s palpable evidence that I’m not just blowing smoke. We have this musical icon for one night only and it’s a mere $15. Don’t miss it. [Heidi King]

Thursday (today) through next Thursday, MACC [DANCE/CULTURAL] This year Maui is hosting the hula party of the year. The second annual world conference of hula, Ka ‘Aha Hula ‘O Halauaola, is drawing thousands of people from all over to share culture and hula-esque activity. Thursday through Saturday, “hands-on” workshops and cultural classes featuring everything from the history of hula to the kind of dye to use for your grass skirt will be offered to registered participants, and include the greatest of hula masters. From dance using some traditional hula implements to the more contemporary hula of the 21st century, as well as stories of the history and family traditions, this conference has a lot to offer any hula fanatic! Extreme Prejudice Rob Zombie takes horror to its neocon extreme Controversial for its gratuitous use of sadistic violence and gore, The Devil’s Rejects is ultimately unredeemable for its wrongheaded attempt at glamorizing a band of cocky and detestable serial killers. Writer/director Rob Zombie’s vaguely kindred sequel to his slapdash House of 1000 Corpses finds the satanic Firefly family of quasi cannibals forced on the lam after a bloody showdown with cops attempting to bust up their serial killing enterprise.

Zombie opens the movie with a 1970s television credit sequence homage mocking the same style David Gordon Green used in his Terrence Malick-inspired 2004 drama Undertow. As Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe) leads a team of speeding patrol cars to the Firefly’s remote Alabama farmhouse, where all kinds of torture and carnage has taken place, the camera regularly freezes to apprehend the vulgar characters whose violent actions we will contemplate for the duration of the film. The compositions are lovingly composed to emphasize the presence of Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) as an out-of-place normal looking girl who fills the sort of validating purpose for the offensive killers as Pat Priest served as Marilyn on the Munsters television show.

For all of the firepower at their disposal the cops are nonetheless beaten at their own game so that Zombie’s revolting renegades can hit the open road and call in the help of their greasy serial killer clown accomplice Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig). The group’s bloodthirsty mother (Leslie Easterbrook) is captured and taken into custody by Wydell, who wants desperately to avenge the torture and

murder of his brother by the Firefly gang.

The centerpiece of the movie is a desensitizing torture, humiliation and murder sequence that alone should have mandated an NC-17 rating for the movie. The Firefly gore hounds kidnap a close-knit traveling country music band at a motel and set about sexually humiliating the bandleader’s wife and friend in an episode

Buttermaker finds drinking cold ones and pursuing hot ladies far more exciting than baseball. But he’s brought back into the game when the Little League must accept all players, regardless of their abilities. Buttermaker finds himself coaching the Bears, the worst team in Little League history. (Linda Gampert) THE DEVIL’S REJECTS - (R) - Horror - I think you should know that this movie is directed by Rob Zombie. That said, you either want to keep reading or you’ve been scared away and want to see Herbie: Fully Loaded. This film continues after the events in Zombie’s first flick, House of 1000 Corpses, with the Firefly family continuing their unforgiving killing spree. Sheriff John Wydell is pissed about his brother’s death and wants to avenge the murder, so he tries to find the Firefly family for a deadly showdown.

Hey, it’s got a plot! (LG) HUSTLE AND FLOW - (R) - Drama - DJay is a Memphis pimp, talented with words but lives a dead-end life. Fate helps him out when he runs into an old friend, Key, who is a sound engineer and is itching to make it in the music industry.

The two team up together with a church musician who supplies a beat machine. Watch DJay’s transformation as he spits out freestyle raps and heads to Memphis, hometown of the famous rapper Skinny Black. (LG) THE ISLAND - (PG13) - Action/Adventure, Thriller - Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson make a yummy pair in this futuristic thriller. The two think they live in a utopian society that’s actually a contained facility where nothing is so utopian. Then they’re picked to go to “The Island,” the last uncontaminated spot on their planet (so they’re told), code for they are going to be killed off. Turns out, the inhabitants are human clones, serving as extras to their original human forms.

Never mind the plot, go to see the hot chemistry between McGregor and Johansson. (LG) MARCH OF THE PENGUINS - (G) - This little documentary is going to make you laugh and cry.

It’s amazing how easy it is to relate to the flightless birds. Aren’t they the only animals that mate for life? It seems to me they’re more faithful than humans. (I’m not bitter!) It’s adorable. It’s real. It’s rated G and narrated by Morgan Freeman. It follows a flock for one year, and more specifically one couple, to see how they travel across the Antarctic.

After his parents are murdered, Bruce Wayne fights injustice in the world, returning to Gotham city as Batman. He uses his strength and intelligence to fight off bad guys. Christian Bale plays Batman in yet another installment but this time they got Batman right, including his infamous skintight leather suit. Val Kilmer was a sure-miss as Batman, and George Clooney was too Chanel-looking for the role of this tough, dark hero. (LG) BEWITCHED - (PG13) - Comedy, Romance and Fantasy - Instead of simply making the 1970s TV sitcom Bewitched into a movie, filmmaker Nora Ephron made a movie about making a the 1970s TV sitcom Bewitched into a movie. Except the actress they get to reprise Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha (Nicole Kidman) is actually a witch! Not Nicole Kidman—the actress portrayed by Kidman. That’s hot! Maybe. Also stars Will Farrell as the guy who plays the Darrin role.

(Anthony Pignataro) CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - (PG) - Family/Musical/Fantasy - This Tim Burton adaptation of Roald Dahl’s rather dark and brutal children’s book stars Johnny Depp as famed chocolate magnate Willy Wonka. Yes, I know Depp and Burton do great work. And that Helena Bonham Carter also appears. But come on! Must Hollywood remake every film? Gene Wilder played the definitive Willy Wonka back in 1971! Do I have something in my eye?

CINDERELLA MAN - (PG13) - Drama - Set in New York during the Great Depression era, this tells the true story of heavyweight champion James Braddock’s (Russell Crowe) rise to stardom. There aren’t any glass slippers or magic pumpkins in this film but there’s a lot of drama, as Braddock struggles to overcome poverty and provide for his wife (Renee Zellweger) through boxing. Directed by Ron Howard, it’s nice to see Crowe back in some Gladiator-type action in this over two-hour long flick. Scary fact: Ben Affleck was going to play the role of Braddock back in 2000, so let’s all breathe a sigh of relief that he didn’t! (LG) DARK WATER - (PG13) - Thriller - Did you see The Ring? Did you know that it was based on the Japanese movie Ringu? I watched both and frankly, I liked the Japanese version better. I felt like it made more sense.

Anyway, this movie is based on another movie by the same people that made Ringu and it should be just as disturbing. What is it about little kids that make scary movies just that much creepier? Jennifer Connelly stars as the mom in this psychological thriller. She and her daughter move into a new place that seems to be in need of repair. There’s a ceiling leek that drips dark water from the uninhibited apartment from above. 103 min. (HK) FANTASTIC FOUR - (PG13) - Action, Sci-Fi - Let’s just be honest. Jessica Alba is smoking hot and the fact that this movie received a PG13 rating for “some suggestive content” is enough to pack the aisles with horny little bastards old and young. The story line is that four astronauts are changed by cosmic rays while in space and attain super powers. One is stretchy and flexible, another can go invisible, another can light up like human fire, and one is ridiculously strong. That makes them The Fantastic Four. Get it? ‘Cause there’s four of them! 123 min. (HK) GEORGE A. ROMERO'S LAND OF THE DEAD (R) - Action/Adventure and Suspense/Horror - An uprising of the dead in the barren wasteland surrounding a tenuously enclosed civilization? Oh, sure. But really, this is just a classic tale of greed, corruption, zombies and really, really bad decisions. Much like what went on in Ohio last September. Stars Dennis Hopper, Asia Argento and John Leguizamo. (Samantha Campos) HERBIE: FULLY LOADED - (G) - Comedy - “Fully Loaded?” That’s what I’ll have to be in order to watch this flick. A comedy/action/adventure/kids/family/Walt Disney movie rated G (no way!), this movie stars Lindsay Lohan, Justin Long, Michael Keaton, Matt Dillon, Brecklen Meyer, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. That’s a pretty solid line-up. I loved Justin Long in Dodgeball and Michael Keaton is one of my all time faves. But, honestly, one-and-a-half hours of Lindsay Lohan being all cute, driving a self-minded Volkswagon bug in Nascar is more than l can stomach.

I’m sure children will enjoy it. But for those of us who saw the original, what’s the point?, let’s all breathe a sign of relief that he didn’t! (HK) THE HONEYMOONERS - (PG13) - Comedy - Ralph Kramden and his wife Alice struggle with money despite Ralph’s attempts at get-rich-quick schemes and a motivational speaker tape series. They have some money saved up, so they decide they want to buy a Brooklyn duplex with their best friends, Ed and Trixie.

But whoops, Ralph manages to lose their saved-up money when he mixes it up with another one of his money-making schemes. Why couldn’t he have left the money alone!? Now he’s lost their money and Alice as well. Ralph is going to fight hard to get his marriage and money back. Hmm... maybe sell more tapes? (LG) THE LONGEST YARD - (PG13) - Comedy - This remake of the 1974 Burt Reynolds classic stars Adam Sandler and, um, Reynolds again as current and former football star, respectively, who wind up in stir together. They end up putting a team together to play the

guards and hilarity ensues. At least, it did back in ’74.

Also stars Chris Rock. (AP) MADAGASCAR - (PG) - Comedy, Kids/Family and Animation - Ah! Finally a movie with stars we can respect: a lion, a zebra, a giraffe and a pregnant hippo (voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett-Smith, respectively). See, the animals were all “residents” of the zoo but when one of them disappears, the other three go looking for him and all four end up getting captured, put in boxes and shipped back to Africa. Only, something happens with the ship and the four wash up on the shores of Madagascar, having to fend for themselves after being “cared for” by humans all their lives. Yeah, I know, it sounds fishy to me, too, but that’s just half of it! Also stars (the voice of) Cedric the Entertainer. (SC) MR. & MRS SMITH - (PG13) - Action/Adventure, Romance, Thriller - Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star in this movie that brings domestic abuse to the big screen. Secret assassins they are and now their next targets are each other! Mr. and Mrs. Smith chase each other around with guns, shout out some cheesy lines and then fire off another round. If they loved each other they could just call it quits but this is one messed up case of “I do.” People will go to this movie to see the hotness of Angelina and Brad or maybe for some reassurance in their marriage? (LG) REBOUND - (PG) - Comedy - Martin Lawrence (Bad Boys, Big Mama’s House) stars in this new feel-good flick that’s rated PG. How wholesome of him.

Lawrence plays a college basketball coach, who apparently is good as a coach, yet somewhat lacking as a human being. He’s kicked out of the college coaching scene and finds himself bannished to the middle school world. Though painfully predictable, the movie features some of my favorite comedians, specifically Megan Mullally (Will & Grace). It’s also got Breckin Meyer (Garfield), Wendy Raquel Robinson (Miss Congeniality) and Horatio Sanz (Saturday Night Live). It should be good for a few laughs and there won’t be much thinking necessary. (LG) STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH - (PG-13) - Action/Adventure, Science Fiction/Fantasy - The furry and lovable Chewbacca makes his anticipated return to the big screen in the last installment (really!) of the Star Wars trilogy. Get ready to witness the transformation of young Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) into the evil and deepvoiced man in black, Darth Vader (because, let’s face it, without the voice he would not be cool). The rest of the gang is ready for some action as well, including the bearded Obi-Wan Kenobi (sexy Scottish Ewan McGregor, mmmmm), the Senator Padme Amidala and her insane hair (Natalie Portman) and best of all, Yoda!

People go crazy for that little green guy, agreed?… Too bad we all know how this trilogy ends. (LG) WAR OF THE WORLDS - (PG13) - Science Fiction/Fantasy - Here’s another end-of-the world, everyone is going to die action movie featuring Tom Cruise. This one is based on the classic H.G. Well’s novel that tells about the battle for humankind’s future.

Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a working class dude who lives in New Jersey, just trying to support his children.

His life is shaken when aliens arrive to destroy Earth and he is forced to protect his children. People are so obsessed with the little green guys invading our planet, what about the people who already live here destroying it!? (LG) WEDDING CRASHERS - (R) - Comedy - Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play a couple divorce counselors who cruise weddings looking to score with chicks. But then one of them—does it really matter which?—actually falls in love with the daughter of some strange politician played by Christopher Walken.

[R&B] So let’s talk about this preacher boy. About 10 years ago, I was in Los Angeles when I first heard the buzz about some new artist named D’Angelo. My curiosity was piqued but I was skeptical—that’s what I do. But when I put this neo-soul record on, it blew my mind. The vocals reminded me of my favorite singers Smoky Robinson and Al Green. Instantly, I knew I would wear this album out. You all might remember the record title hit, an ode to marijuana that was as intoxicating to listen to, as it probably was to make. But he also got me at the sexy ballad “You’re My Lady” (which, after I saw him, made me wish I was) and my favorite Smokey Robinson and The Miracles song, “Crusin’.” Not too many people can touch that. Punk Rock 101 A discography of early hardcore Hardcore punk developed in the early 1980s. Bands like the Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Minor Threat, TSOL, the Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion sprang up all over the world, building the network that “alternative” bands continue to enjoy to this day.

A fast, and often left-leaning, politically charged music scene emerged creating a doit-yourself (D.I.Y.) movement challenging the status quo and the marketing of popular music. Bands like Nirvana and Green Day materialized from this scene.

In 1984, the fanzine Maximum Rock and Roll released a record called Welcome to 1984 featuring bands from Italy, France and Germany. I was at my friend Mike’s house when I first heard this record. I stole away from the party that he was having, put on headphones and then dropped the needle onto the spinning black vinyl. Four furious chords from the Italian band Raw Power pierced my eardrums, taking my breath away.

Twenty seconds into the song, an enraged vocalist screamed “Fuck Fuck Fuck, Fuck Authority” over and over again. My arms immediately turned into chicken skin as I pumped the volume up all the way. After the song finished, I lifted the record-playing arm and dropped it back at the beginning. I repeated this until who knows when—Mike found me asleep and drooling on his parent’s living room floor early the next morning.

Joey Keithley from the Canadian band D.O.A. recently compiled a greatest hits package of raw power from their 10 albums on his new label Sudden Death. Always fast and intense, The Hit List features 32 songs from one of the most under-appreciated hardcore bands of the mid-‘80s.

Speaking of D.O.A., be sure to check out War and Peace, another greatest hits package from Sudden Death. War and Peace features many of D.O.A.’s hardest hitting songs, like the topical and pissedoff beyond recognition “Liar for Hire” and the speedy “The Prisoner.”

Mixing hard rock, reggae, punk and hardcore, D.O.A. toured the world extensively and always put on an amazing show.

I have seen them up close and personal many times and am completely in awe of their integrity, wit and passion.

Before I sobered up, my favorite band of 1985 was Austin’s Scratch Acid. They’re not “hardcore” by any stretch of the imagination but are definitely punk in spirit and musical execution. Instead of using speed and anger, the band fused a psychedelic and beefed-up

version of Link Wray and the Cramps, churning out some highly imaginative rock and roll.

On the reissue The Greatest Gift, “Cannibal” is a song pleading with a flesheater to stop eating the singer’s body parts.

(David Yow, the eccentric vocalist, later went on to join the Jesus Lizard). My favorite song is the “Greatest Gift,” with its swirling Texas-surf guitar and emotive lyrics. Even today, I have wonderful flashbacks listening to this CD. After I sobered up, I discovered the Washington D.C. band Marginal Man. Their moniker comes from a sociological term for “an individual partially assimilated into two or more cultures” (sounds similar to a suburban punk rocker’s dilemma).

Marginal Man lived in my cassette player for years. Their first record Identity came out on Dischord Records but I’ve been looking for their second record, Double Image, (In your Eye Records) for a long time. Finally, thanks to my pal Andrew, I found it on Amazon.com.

The songwriting is simple, but honest and direct. The passionate vocals and fascinating interplay between the guitars makes me go crazy and drive really fast, singing along at the top of my voice. (If you are a police officer, I made up that last sentence).

I was also surprised to hear how contemporary sounding they are. While never whiny like many of the emo/screamo bands out there, Marginal Man can definitely hold their own against the eye shadow wearing, faux-angry simpletons who are so popular now.

To me, punk rock was and is about being musically adventurous. It isn’t the format that is important. One kid told me he only listens to music on vinyl, as if that made it more “punk” or something.

Whether it’s the brutally fast music of VOID, the crazy funk of the Big Boys or the pre-crossover metal of Dr. Know, playing in a punk band meant more than sporting an orange mohawk or watching A Clockwork Orange everyday and looking for a little “ultra-violence.” MTW

TAKE 5 Christopher Walken Comedies ANNIE HALL Long before he played the role of the creepy Treasury Secretary in this year’s Wedding Crashers, Walken solidified his comedic credentials in the 1977 Woody Allen masterpiece Annie Hall. Walken played Duane Hall, the hilariously suicidal brother of Annie (Diane Keaton) who dreamed of driving his car into oncoming traffic. And in a strange twist of fate, Walken’s name is actually misspelled in the movie’s closing credits and appears as “Wlaken.” Weird… Rated PG/93 minutes.

Across the blacktop is a roadside eatery called the "Double Cupp Diner". The four guys at the station have been known to do some auto repairs, but only when aided by quantities of time and beer. Yep, sounds typical. And the Cupp sisters celebrate their home cooking with the same zeal they bring to being neighborly with the boys. Tickets: $18 adults, $16 seniors and students. KANGAROO JACK I know, calling this 2003 picture a “comedy”—hell, calling it a “movie”—is a bit of a stretch, but Walken was in it, playing his typical sleazy mobster role.

For the billions of people out there who missed seeing the film, it chronicles the tale of two idiots who must chase a kangaroo carrying stolen mob money across Australia. I’m sure stuff like that happens all the time in Oz, but it’s tough for us American audiences to relate. Rated PG/89 minutes.

Not nearly so entertaining as the first, the 1993 film Wayne’s World 2 brought back Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey and Tia Carrere in a thoroughly clichéd and routine sequel. Walken played record producer Bobby Cahn—critics labeled him “sleazy” and “smarmy,” though those descriptors are pretty much implied by the title “record producer”—who tries to lure Carrere’s Casandra away from Wayne. All in all a slapdash affair, but still enjoyable nonetheless. Rated PG13/94 minutes.

Not a bad film at all, considering it came out way back in 2001 and stars David Spade in the title role as a hick who goes off to find his parents. Also stars the delicious Jaime Pressley. Rated PG-13/90 minutes.

ANTZ This 1998 Pixar animated film starred Sharon Stone, Sylvester Stallone, Danny Glover and Woody Allen. It was far too derivative of Allen’s earlier 1975 Love and Death—in both pictures Allen plays a neurotic soldier marching off to war—but it certainly wasn’t awful. Besides, what are the odds that the kids who saw this picture were fans of Allen’s earlier work? In any case, Walken played Colonel Cutter, a henchman for Gene Hackman’s cunning, dangerous General Mandible. Rated PG/83 minutes.

Alphabet Soup I have nothing to hide. I’ve been single now for over two years, and I think my dating life is pretty normal—especially for Maui. I think I have a fairly solid social decorum when it comes to dating. For instance, I never dated or hit on married men. But the flings, the social experiments, the dating outside of type—I mean, hey, it was sometimes necessary. Here’s how it all went down, mostly, in the form of my dating ABC’s: A was a musician I hooked up with at a friend’s wedding. It was typical of musician hookups, too—I played psychotherapist while he got drunk, we made-out sloppily and I never heard from him again.

B was trouble from the very beginning and I knew it. But I was attracted to his intelligence, confidence and the fact that he was new to the island. But that didn’t last long—girls ate him up like sharks on a wounded turtle. Only it turns out, he was a bigger shark than they.

Tragically, C should’ve never happened. He was a nice man, and we had fun but I wasn’t as attracted to him as I initially thought perhaps I would be. When he started pressuring me to spend more time with him, I bailed. And not very nicely, either.

I don’t even remember how I met D. But we’d been getting drunk together for years. We should’ve just remained drinking buddies because I fell into what would become a more frequent pattern of hooking up with friends, then getting annoyed with them when they “looked at me differently” and I’d split.

E came around at a vulnerable point in my life when I longed for someone to “worship me.”

And he did, beautifully. He cooked me dinners, gave me massages and made me laugh when I was bummed. But after a while, I realized that wasn’t what I wanted either. It got to be too much sunshine, when I felt most comfortable standing alone in the rain.

G and I met in a bar. Imagine that. We were set up to go out on an official date by his friend, who was also at the bar. I’m putting him into the category of men (including R) I actually went on “dates” with—men who were generally older, more successful and more responsible than I’m used to. I tried but simply couldn’t shake the looming feeling of potential seriousness these dates usually held.

H was a tourist I picked up at Maui Brews one night. He totally wasn’t my type—one of those muscley metrosexual types from Southern California. I think he was even wearing cologne. But sometimes girls have needs that even pretty boy-meatheads can fulfill.

I was the first musician I met while on the job. And it was the first time I realized what a hook this journalist gig is for meeting guys. You see, sometimes, the artists and musicians I interview are so grateful or so shamelessly promoting or so inexplicably attracted to what meager influence I might have over getting their name to the public that they ask me out.

Mutualistic symbiosis or parasitism? Aw, who cares…

J was a cruel lesson in fulfilling the fantasy of long-term secret crushes. I had been eyeballing him for years but our timing was always off. By the time the stars were aligned, our long-awaited moment was severely disappointing—severely, because it took five long years of anticipation to make happen. Disappointing, because I discovered he had real-life issues. Pedestals are for asses, my friends.

Another J—along with K and P—was one of a group of platonic guy friends who I felt the need to seduce on various hormonally induced whims. For the most part, we’re all still friends but I do often feel pangs of guilt for not being able to hold some things sacred—like friendship—just because I get greedy.

M was the requisite rebound fling I had right after the demise of my relationship two years ago. I appreciate everything he did for me—and my ego—back then. Especially when he thwarted my vulnerable pleas for something more substantial with him. “Go do your thing for a while,” he said. “Then when you’re done, come back and I’ll be your boyfriend.”

Thank goodness he’s not still waiting.

I was completely ego-boosting on O. He was waaay too young for me but hot. Plus, there was a language barrier, which made the tryst kinda sexy. Then my editor handed me this article on “Cougars”—older women who go out with much younger guys. Apparently there’s this whole subculture going on. But it just makes me feel so sleazy.

Happens to the best of us, yes? I mean, we can’t be expected to remember everyone? Ahem. So Q is for all the “question marks” I have in my notebook: that young (again with the young!) surfer boy from New York, the hot business man from the Bay Area I picked up at Longhi’s one Friday night, the sexy South American from Casanova… yeah, so that’s all. I think.
