A Father and His Son Talking about Father’s Day In the interests of fostering good father/child relations, given that Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 18, here’s a transcript of a recent, rather touching telephone conversation I had with my dad—our first in nearly two years:

What, are you recording this?

MICK E. FINN: Hi, Dad. It’s your son, Mick. As opposed to who, my other son Igor? Mick, you’re my only son. In fact, you’re the only guy I know whose name is Mick.

Glad to hear from you too, Dad. How are things? What do you mean, how are things? You know how things are. I just saw you 15 minutes ago in the living room.

Well, yeah, sure, if you want to get technical. Say, that reminds me—are you gonna take out the garbage like I asked you to? Look, your mother and I are letting you live here rent-free, but that doesn’t mean you can just mooch off us like some gutless parasite. You know, your mother and I worked our asses off to get you a good education, into a good college, and then you graduate with that, well, I guess you call it a “degree” in women’s studies—I mean, what were you thinking? That it was just a great way to meet girls? I suppose I have no one to blame for you laying around the house all day like a sponge… [inaudible]

I’m sorry Dad, can you speak louder? The tape machine sometimes doesn’t pick it up when you mumble.

•Wedding •Portrait •Family

Um, well, yeah, I mean… What are you, some kind of National Security Agency stooge? Gonna turn in your old man to the Fed and get some big reward?

Dad…

DAD: Hello?

Top quality professional photography services at affordable prices.

Want me to admit on tape that I stole those files from the office last year? Because I didn’t, you know. I happen to know who did, but I’ve already sworn to take that little piece of knowledge to my grave.

Okay, Dad, hold onOh wait, I know—you’re trying to get me to spill the beans on the old Conway Case! I tell you, I thought that house was abandoned!

Dad, Jesus! I just wanted to record a loving conversation between you and I. Oh man… Father’s Day is coming up, isn’t it?

Yes! Why can’t you just get me a necktie like every other son in America? Or, better yet—how about taking out the garbage like I asked?

Dad, wouldn’t you rather have a real expression of our love that you can listen to over and over for the rest of your life? So you’re not going to take out the garbage?

I knew you’d understand. Happy Father’s Day, Dad.

What Governor Linda Lingle said in a June 2, 2006 press release on her signing two more energy bills: “Through these new laws we are reaffirming our desire to establish a secure energy and economic future for the people of Hawai’i by reducing our dependence on imported oil. We also want to encourage the use of energy efficiency and renewables, including biofuels in Hawai’i.”

What she didn’t say: Wanna reduce the state’s dependency on fossil fuels? How about a mandate requiring that a certain portion of cars sold in the state produce zero emissions. Not hybrids, not hydrogen cars, but real, bonified zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). California messed around this a decade ago, and you know what? It worked. GM, through Saturn, produced the all-electric EV-1. It had comparable performance to a gasoline or diesel-powered car, with the added bonus that it completely lacked a tailpipe. Saturn had a waiting list a mile long of people wanting to lease the car (the company refused to let anyone buy the car). Of course, California lawmakers decided that the mandate was too harsh, and they took it away, allowing GM to seize and then junk each and every EV-1. So the trick here is that Hawai’i passes a similar mandate, but then keeps it.

Yeah, yeah. Say, you know where your mother went? MTW

This goes out to the pilau person who’s been bringing their dog down to Father Jules Beach near Mama’s Fish House. Why are you leaving dog poop all over the beach? It’s a sweet, little beach, and I’m not surprised you and your dog like it so much. But I wish you’d have the decency to clean up after your dog. People and kids play around in that sand and in the water. How would you like it if I came over to your house and took a crap on your bed and in your bathtub? No? So clean up after your dog!

Timing is Everything

RUNNING FOR: County Councilmember, Wailuku-Waihe’e-Waikapu district OCCUPATION: Maui Waena Intermediate physical education teacher MAUI TIME WEEKLY: First of all, why should people vote for you? BLITZ HARRY: Why not?

Okay, what is the biggest problem facing your district? Well, I’m not the one that will come up with the problems. I don’t have a platform. No, this is my platform: I’m going to go around to community associations and have them tell me what the problems are. You know, Wailuku, Waikapu and Waihe’e all have different problems, and I’m not going to go in there like Don Quixote. I’m not going to tell them what to do.

What are your feelings on Hawaiian sovereignty? We need it. The Kingdom of Hawai’i was a sovereign nation with treaties and relationships with other nations. That sovereignty was taken away without a vote or even an act of war— it was just taken from us.

As a councilmember, what would you do to support Hawaiian sovereignty? Well, if I was elected I don’t think I could really help the movement along. I would enjoy seeing it being supported, but as a councilmember there are certain rules you have to follow, right?

Yeah, I guess there are “rules.” Okay, now let’s play a game. I’ll say a word and you say the first word that comes to mind.

All right, what was the most difficult thing that has ever happened to you? Well, I guess that would be getting divorced twice.

And the most embarrassing that ever happened to you? You’re playing mind games with me now? Getting divorced twice.

Yeah, I guess so. Here we go: Superferry. What was the last book you read? Why?

Are you asking me why I asked you about the Superferry or is that your answer?

Well, actually recently I’ve been reading—for my own curiosity—the Maui County code.

Oh, interesting. Any other titles? No, that’s my answer.

National Geographic. All right. Next: George W. Bush. [Sighing] I voted for him twice.

Okay. Last question: What is your favorite thing about Maui? My roots go back here thousands of years.

Land development. Slow down.

-Gena Gammie Tourism. Made my living by it for 20 years.

Always ask for the customer’s ID. Always check the ID. Always make sure the customer is over 21. For the Maui County Department of Liquor Control, these are the Three Commandments for all licensees—the basic rules governing every store, bar and restaurant on Maui that wants to sell booze. But what happens when the licensee—a store clerk, for instance—for reasons that aren’t very clear, kind of spaces when a customer reaches the cashier? What happens when that clerk goes ahead and sells the customer—a minor who happens to be working undercover for the LC, for instance—a six-pack of Smirnoff Twisted V Green Apple malt liquor without asking for an ID, but then as the customer is leaving the store suddenly remembers and yells out that he needs to see some identification? If you’re the Adjudication Board, what happens is that the licensee gets slapped with a $2,000 fine like everyone else—$1,000 suspended though, assuming the licensee can go a year without selling any more booze to minors. All this happened to Port Town Chevron in Kahului last July, and the Adjudication Board took it up at their June 1, 2006 hearing. Owner Ryuichiro Ishida, who spoke such poor English he needed a translator at one point, kept trying to tell the board that he took the matter very seriously, but had this been “a real case,” his clerk wouldn’t have sold the booze to the minor decoy. The board ridiculed that idea, pointing out that the clerk had exchanged money with the minor decoy, which made it a real case, but Ishida had a point: what would have happened had that minor not been an LC decoy? Ishida’s view was that his clerk would have gone after the customer, properly carded him, determined that he was just a kid, and voided the sale. Would this have actually happened? Who knows, because Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Temas said that as soon as Ishida’s clerk yelled after the minor that he needed to see some ID, LC Investigator Chad Gardiner moved in and told the clerk he’d just been nailed in a sting. Tellingly, the LC didn’t bring Ishida up on charges of failing to check identification.

That’s when the panel voted 13 to 9 to send a letter to the County Council urging what amounts to a complete and total moratorium on new development projects until they’ve finished thrashing out the General Plan. MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, June 7 Seems the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has decided to “request information” from the National Security Agency (NSA) about whether the spooks in Washington are tracking our telephone conversations. “We continue to operate in the dare here, and Hawai’i’s citizens deserve to know whether or not the federal government is monitoring their phone calls,” Rep. Brian Schatz (D, 25th District) said in a press release today announcing the decision. “Our constitution guarantees privacy for Hawai’i citizens, so this is a critical issue for the government to investigate.” Schatz, who’s been pushing this NSA eavesdropping thing ever since USA Today broke the story and is one of many candidates running for U.S. Representative Ed Case’s 2nd District congressional seat, is probably going to end up disappointed. See, the NSA is our nation’s most paranoid and secret government agency. The chances that they’ll provide honest and candid answers to Hawai’i’s PUC are about as good as President George W. Bush appointing Paris Hilton to the Federal Appeals Court. Or a civil liberties attorney. Still, I’m glad someone in Honolulu is at least asking questions.

THURSDAY, June 8 So it looks like the old Akaka Bill is dead. Not yet buried—U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka has too much at stake in his bid for reelection to let go of his vaunted Native Hawaiian Recognition Act so easily—but it is dead. Sixty senators were needed today to approve a full floor debate on

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

the bill—something Akaka has spent the last six years asking for—but only 55 of his colleagues agreed. Even that is amazing, considering all the talk of how the bill was racist and unconstitutional spouted by right-wing senators Lamar Alexander (R, Tennessee) and Jon Kyl (R, Arizona). Akaka is promising to revive the bill this legislative session and, if it fails again, next year (assuming he’s around to do so), but what else can he say? State Senator J. Kalani English called the loss a “major setback,” and that’s pretty astute. Then again, the real radical Native Hawaiian activists—the ones who want secession from the U.S of A—always hated the Akaka Bill anyway, because it pretty much made that dream an impossibility.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

FRIDAY, June 9 Here’s something you don’t see every day: Howard Konrad, the owner of the Whaler’s Village Museum and Lahaina Scrimshaw, has just been indicted by the fed for illegal trafficking of sperm whale teeth, according to today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin. See, sperm whale teeth are made of extremely valuable ivory, but they’re also usually attached to sperm whales, which are an endangered species. As such, selling sperm whale teeth requires a special U.S. Fish and Wildlife permit, which the Star-Bulletin says Konrad didn’t have. In any case, Konrad’s attorney says that Konrad is reputable and, though fascinated by whaling—no surprise there—is working with the U.S. Attorney’s office to end the matter.

pretty funny!—$3.67 for a single gallon of 87 Octane. No sir, those dark days are long gone. Just say this morning that the price of gas has plummeted all the way to $3.61 a gallon. It’s positively magical.

Maui Chamber of Commerce President and developer extraordinaire Charlie Jencks and slow growth activist Lance Holter to agree that the report was dead on the money. In fact, both said the same thing: the Planning Department needs more people. While it’s hard to argue this point. In his defense, Planning Department Director Mike Foley pointed out that his agency hasn’t got the money to pay for expansion. While true, there’s a flip side to that coin: despite all the horrors that supposedly go on in the planning cubicles—records stored in the hallway, planners not returning phone calls, etc.—somehow those people have managed to approve a heap of new residential, commercial and resort developments. I know because I pass all the cranes on my way to work.

MONDAY, June 12

Big story in today’s Maui News about a consultant’s report that came out in March detailing how the Maui County Planning Department was slow, understaffed, overworked and exhibited a “permissive” attitude concerning code enforcement. Oh, come on—this sounds like science fiction. Seriously though, what did the consultants do—drive up to Launiupoko and see all those lavish “farm dwellings” developers have been building up there over the last few years? Even more amazing than this startling conclusion—exemplified by the fact that despite a stated 25-day permit processing time period, the department typically takes four months to move permits through— The Maui News managed to get both

Good news everyone! The brand new Pacific Tsunami Warning Center—that super high-tech nerve center set up at Ewa Beach on Oahu to alert all U.S. territories around the Pacific of deadly tsunami waves—was built in a tsunami zone. So says today’s online Pacific Business News. Now here’s some even better news: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants to move the warning center to Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, which turns out is also a tsunami zone. Government agencies—they’re fantastic!

TUESDAY, June 13 Agree or disagree with the Senator Akaka’s Native Hawaiian Recognition Act, its death—and unless Democrats take over both the U.S. House and Senate in November, it’s going to stay dead— means really bad things for Akaka’s reelection campaign. Here’s an 81-yearold, progressive but largely feckless guy saying people should for him and not that whippersnapper fake-Republican Ed Case, which is a great platform for reelection except that Akaka’s esteemed colleagues in the Senate know better and don’t act like he’s got any seniority. The Akaka Bill has been floating around the congress for six years—it’s hard to run on seniority with that kind of record.

INEXPLICABLE Michael Scanlon, 31, a chief associate of disgraced Washington, D.C., lobbyist Jack Abramoff, reportedly earned millions from his largely illegal deals with Abramoff and spent most of it buying real estate in Delaware beach communities during 2002-2005, paying at least $12 million in cash. However, according to a May report in the Wilmington NewsJournal, Scanlon dutifully each summer during those years worked as a full-time lifeguard on Delaware beaches, at $11.35 an hour, and reportedly had tried to line up the job again this summer, but was turned down by Rehoboth Beach officials because of his pending federal sentence.

UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Jason Lyon, 28, a National Guardsman from Buffalo, N.Y., who

hurt his ankle jumping from a Humvee in Baghdad in 2004, was cleared, after treatment, to return to combat. After his tour ended, he applied to the U.S. Postal Service to be a letter carrier but was turned down because of his ankle injury, though he is free to apply for less-strenuous positions. In March the Postal Service said it would seek a second medical opinion on the ankle.

MORE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT Spokane, Wash., dentist Henry G. Kolsrud, 82, decided to give up his license in May rather than face punishment for having an unsanitary office; among the charges: that he kept cat food in the office refrigerator with dental supplies, and that he scooped up cat vomit around the office with dental spatulas.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS In St. Paul, Minn., in May, an unnamed man, working out a community-service sentence by cleaning up for the next day’s “graduation” at the St. Paul Police Department’s dog training school, was caught with drugs by the senior canine “instructor,” Buster. According to a report in the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune, the worker had brought six small bags of marijuana with him, even though assigned to the dog school. “I was going to smoke it when I was done working,” he said.

END MATTERS In April, authorities at El Salvador’s La Esperanza prison near San Salvador arrested visitor Lidia Alvarado for allegedly trying to smuggle an M-67 grenade to inmates by stuffing it inside her vagina. Also in April, the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal-Star reported that a 38-year-old man appeared at the ER at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln with a 20-ounce soft drink bottle lodged in his rectum. In a May dispatch from Atlanta on Southerners’ notoriously unnutritious, fat-laden cuisine, a Chicago Tribune reporter watered readers’ mouths with descriptions of the “hamdog” and the “Luther” (prized dishes of Mulligan’s restaurant in Decatur, Ga.), which are, respectively, “a half-pound of hamburger meat wrapped around a hot dog, which is deep-fried and served on a hoagie topped with chili, bacon and a fried egg,” and “a half-pound burger served with bacon and cheese on a Krispy Kreme doughnut.” The 11 states from Washington, D.C., to Florida, west to Texas, have the nation’s highest mortality rate from strokes, but, said a University of Mississippi professor, “Food is a strong emblem of identity for Southerners,” uniquely shared across racial lines.

Our Guide To All Things Maui Film Festival “It’s a Rubik’s Cube made of barbershop mirrors,” was how organizer Barry Rivers described the Maui Film Festival at Wailea to us a couple weeks ago. “It’s always hard.” It’s always hard because Rivers brings so many great movies to Maui—45 feature length films, not including myriad shorts, cartoons and a few classic Harold Lloyd silent pictures for a free bonus. There are major studio films here, independent short subjects, political documentaries, musical tributes and even a few films made by and about Maui residents. Oh, and on Saturday, June 17 at 10 p.m., there will also be a special “Surprise Screening” of what Rivers describes as a “feature dramedy that has had the private screening rooms of industry icons, including Steven Spielberg among dozens of others, buzzing for months now.” Special events include the Taste of the Islands Opening Night Twilight Reception at the Fairmont Kea Lani’s Palm Court, free nightly Star Shows, Starry Night MoonDance at Tommy Bahama’s, Taste of Chocolate at the Four Seasons Resort, Taste of Wailea, filmmaker panels and tributes to Joan Allen, Patricia Clarkson and Jessica Biel. So get to it. This thing only runs from June 14-18. [Special thanks to Samantha Campos, Heidi King and Corey “The Haiku Poet” Nielson for putting together all our great film capsules.]

SOUNDS OF HOPE Music docs, biopics and a reggae love story! By Samantha Campos Music is a powerful force. It transcends cultures, generations, socio-political mores and religion. It lifts us up, it makes us feel and it brings some to striking ridiculous poses on the dance floor. The main theme of this year’s Maui Film Festival ration of musically inclined flicks seems to be about the transformative power of music. In the case of Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man (played Wed, Jun. 14, at the Celestial Cinema), it was about the journey of one musician’s 50-year career of poetry, songwriting and self-discovery. In the film, documentarian Lian Lunson pieced together footage of a tribute to Cohen that took place last year at Sydney Opera House, along with one-on-one conversation with the wry, enigmatic folk-rock legend. Revelations about his bohemian beginnings with music, followed by his studies in silence at a Zen monastery, invoked profound insight into Cohen’s relationship with art and music, and consequently, with himself. On a larger scale, music has the power to transform a group of people struggling to find peace and their place in a chaotic world. When a brutal civil war overtook the West African province of Sierra Leone from 1991 to 2002, hundreds of thousands of people fled to nearby Guinea. The Refugee All Stars is the tale of how two men—Reuben Koroma and Francis Langba—began a band of musicians, who then toured to various campsites, inciting hope and inspiration for the despairing and displaced. “The Sierra Leonean people needed a revolution,” said Koroma. “But not a bloody revolution. Not a negative revolution. We needed a positive revolution.” Love and religion are two other areas that could use a positive revolution as well. In One Love, a reggae love story that’s being touted as a cross between Romeo & Juliet and The Harder They Come, explores in dramatic form, how music can conquer divides between Christian and Rastafarian families when a rasta (played by Kymani Marley) falls in forbidden love with a gospel singer at a music contest. That kind of hopeful transformation is also possible with music on a global level. Sound of the Soul: The Fez Festival of World Music documents the annual celebration of sacred music from around the world that takes place over eight days and nights in the Moroccan city of Fez. There, a Russian Orthodox choir, Moroccan desert nomads, a Portuguese Fado singer, Sufis chanting themselves into trances, and a Harlem gospel group join with religious leaders, scholars and representatives from the World Trade Organization to talk about a spiritual approach to globalization. “At first,” said World Bank Director Katherine Marshall, “most governments thought spirituality had nothing to do with the challenges of development. But it is becoming clearer that it does.” But what about the future of American music? In a time of pop-princess idolatry and a dangerously homogenous mainstream industry—the prettily-packaged Ashlee Simpsons and overblown fanaticism of American Idol being the most obvious indicators—where do we find the power of music? Bob Dylan said, “Music can save people, but it can’t in the

commercial way it’s being used. It’s just too much. It’s pollution.” In the documentary Before the Music Dies, Joel Rasmussen and Andrew Shanter travel across the U.S., talking with music-lovers, music critics and well-known musicians in an attempt to ascertain exactly what has happened in the past two decades to lead to such a dramatic and disheartening change in commercial vs. artistic music. “You got to sell your Coca-Cola, and your Chips A-Hoy, your Nabisco and your super-deluxe tampons,” said Erykah Badu. “And then, you figure out how to fit the music in.” “People get art and commerce mixed up,” said Questlove, of the Roots. “Once you can separate the two, and see that art is art, and commerce is commerce, and understand that this business is commerce, you know, then it makes that much more sense.” But there is an underlying hope amongst fans and music industry professionals. Curiously, that hope lies in technology’s ability to reach an audience of true music enthusiasts, as well as keep a community of innovative artists and aficionados alive. “There’s a lot of dumbing down going on,” said Dave Matthews. “But I don’t think we need to panic. I think we just need to teach our children well.” Before the Music Dies will screen June 15, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Theater; One Love screens June 17, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater; Sound of the Soul: The Fez Festival of World Music screens June 18, 5 p.m. at the McCoy Theater, followed by The Refugee All Stars. Documenting America’s 21st century wars By Anthony Pignataro War is the health of the state. -Randolph Bourne, 1918 Because of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, multinational corporations will get to extract 64 percent of that nation’s oil reserves. Though Iraqi public opinion strongly opposes such deals—known as production sharing agreements, which are actually quite rare in the world—these corporations stand to earn huge sums of money that would otherwise flow to the Iraqi government. In fact, even if oil drops back to $40 a barrel from its current $60 price, these corporations will bring in nearly $200 billion from just the first 12 Iraqi oil fields. These numbers, drawn straight from Greg Muttitt’s November 2005 report “Crude Designs: The rip-off of Iraq’s oil wealth,” aren’t surprising. They certainly won’t shock anyone who sees A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash, a new film directed by Ray McCormack and Basil Gelpke that seeks to explain both the importance of oil in modern society and the lengths we’ll go to keep it flowing. “More and more, oil is going to come from less and less stable places,” Stanford professor Terry Lynn Karl says at one point in the 90-minute documentary. “Ultimately, there are only two options. One is militarize the taking of oil… get your population to understand that if they want to continue to drive SUVs and consume energy in the way they are, we will be in war after war…” Called “Syriana for dummies,” A Crude Awakening is just one of four films showing at this year’s Maui Film Festival that remind us of Bourne’s old sneer that states require “enemies” to keep their populations in line. And in this first decade of the 21st century, war very much remains the health of our state.

LETTING GO: KELLY SLATER You know those cool music documentaries where they take you behind the scenes and backstage as some rock band goes on tour? MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Our war in Iraq came about because a rich Saudi construction engineer named Osama bin Laden convinced a dozen guys to hijack airplanes and fly them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. None were Iraqi, and Iraq played no role whatsoever in the 2001 attacks, but they provided the necessary pretext to convince the nervous, angry American people that we needed to sweep the world of “evildoers” like bin Laden and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

THE GIANT BUDDHAS

Never mind, as Samira Goetschel’s wonderful Our Own Private Bin Laden shows so well, that bin Laden—and Saddam, for that matter—was once an agent of U.S. interests. “We created a religious fanatic force to fight communists,” one insider says in the documentary of our arming the radical Islamist bin Laden to fight the Russians. “How on earth did people not think of the consequences?” When your whole focus is expediency—as in, what’s the most expedient way to kick Soviet ass in Afghanistan?— consequences are for future generations to handle. In late 1970’s and early 1980’s, there was no greater enemy of the American state than Russia. So we gave Stinger missiles to militant Islamic fighters. Today, those militants are our number one enemy, so we quietly cheer as the Russians reduce the tiny Muslim republic of Chechnya to rubble. This isn’t a uniquely Western concept. The Taliban—the Pakistani-supported Islamist group that took over Afghanistan in the mid-1990s and gave sanctuary to bin Laden—were masters at whipping their people into a frenzy against their own “enemies.” Christian Frei’s new The Giant Buddhas tells the disturbing story of how six months before the Twin Towers came down the Taliban dynamited two of the largest and most ancient Buddha statues in the world in their Holy War against all things non-Islam. The loss of the historic statues didn’t register here, but the 3,000 killed in New York and Washington did. “September 11 struck me real hard,” Mike Moriarty says in the new documentary The War Tapes, filmed by and about a unit of National Guardsmen. “I went to Ground Zero. I saw it still burning. I called the recruiter and said, ‘You slot me into a unit only if they go to Iraq.” Iraq is where corporate interests, patriotism and political expediency all intersect, which is why we’re still there today and will likely remain in some way or another for the next decade no matter how much blood is spilled. The choices and allies we make there will determine whom we fight in 2018. Bourne’s observation will be century old by then, but its basic truth will be intact: it doesn’t matter who we fight, as long as we fight. On June 16 Our Own Private Bin Laden and The War Tapes screen at 5 p.m. at the MACC’s McCoy Theater, with The Giant Buddhas playing at 7:30 p.m.; A Crude Awakening screens at 5 p.m. June 17 at the McCoy Theater. THAT GUY WITH GLASSES The shrewd life of Harold Lloyd By Anthony Pignataro There’s a scene in the 1923 comedy Safety Last! when Harold Lloyd’s department store clerk is fighting off dozens of women clamoring to buy bolts of cloth. Panting, his suit reduced to rags, Lloyd—referred to in the movie as “Lloyd” or simply “the boy”— is then chewed out by his supervisor for taking off his jacket at work. The scene is ridiculously dated—women buying cloth, clerks in suit jackets, department stores patrolled by floorwalkers—yet the scene is still hilarious. It’s a mix of physical comedy and light satire—one of many in the film that ultimately climaxes in a harrowing sequence involving Lloyd actually dangling from an actual clock 12 stories above a crowded street. Still largely unknown as a silent star today, Lloyd and his trademark round glasses and unkempt hair appeared in more than 200 movies—more than fellow screen legends Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin combined. And he always played pretty much the same character—an optimistic American go-getter who teetered between genius and fool. He was that way in real life. In 1919, while mugging for the camera with what he thought was a fake bomb, Lloyd blew off his right thumb and index finger. He was blind for several months. He took to wearing a prosthetic hand when he recovered, but still insisted on doing his own stunts, like the famous clock scene in Safety Last!, which remains to this day as one of the most amazing scenes ever put on the big screen. Watching Safety Last! again in preparation for this article, I was struck at how different silent movies are than today’s cinema fare. More so even than subtitled foreign films, silent pictures force the audience to pay constant attention to the screen. Dialogue appears on cards, of course, but there are no sound effects either—the accompanying organ music is all you hear. Avert your gaze for just a few moments, and who knows where you’ll be. Then again, audiences were used to that back then. And Lloyd knew those audiences his whole life.

Born in Nebraska on April 20, 1893, Lloyd’s first jobs as a boy were theater usher and stagehand. Finding non-speaking bit roles in Los Angeles, Lloyd eventually met fellowextra Hal Roach, on his way to starting his own production company. Teaming up, they produced a series of shorts involving a guy named “Loansome Luke,” who was nothing more than a blatant rip-off of Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character. Tiring of it, Lloyd and Roach eventually set up a new character, though both later took credit for the glasses that movie audiences loved so much. Lloyd made his last movie, Mad Wednesday, in 1947. Wealthy and living in a 16acre Beverly Hills estate with his wife Mildred Davis (his co-star from Safety Last!), Lloyd then devoted pretty much the rest of his life—he died in 1971—to his favorite hobby: photographing nude women. He was reportedly a popular shooter. According to a Dec. 4, 2005 Sunday Times story, Lloyd managed to get Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe to pose for him, as well as various other pin-ups from the time. “His models were usually paid $25 per session for posing nude,” reported the Sunday Times. “[P]ubic hair was masked by fans, feathers or flowers, in case the film processors at Kodak decided to exercise their own form of censorship.” Very shrewd, indeed. Then again, Lloyd got pretty shrewd in his later years. His decision to refuse television broadcast rights to his movies because he thought constant commercial breaks ruined the storyline’s pacing seemed nonsensical at the time, but ended up resulting in a whole new generation of fans who know his films only as they were meant to be seen. That kind of appreciation is as close to timeless as a movie star can get. Harold Lloyd’s The Freshman, Girl Shy, Safety Last! and Why Worry? screen for free—FREE!—at 10 p.m. June 15-18 respectively at the SandDance Theater on Wailea Beach. MTW

POETRY IN PARADISE Kealoha Wong and the new film Hawai’i Slam By Krista Sherer First Thursdays in Honolulu is the largest registered poetry slam in the world, with attendance regularly topping 650 people. Along with providing a venue for Hawai’i’s top performance poets, they also feature live painters, DJs, dancers and singers. It’s not your typical solemn poetry reading but one fueled by the audience’s roar of approval or disapproval with finger HAWAI’I SLAM: POETRY IN PARADISE snaps. The poets’ ages are as varied as their backgrounds; topics cover anything from politics to playgrounds. The winner gets $100. Hawai’i Slam: Poetry in Paradise is a 60-minute film documenting four of the state’s top performance poets competing in the 2004 Slam Nationals in St. Louis, Missouri. Award-winning filmmaker Kathryn Xian traveled with Hawai’i Slam’s leading artists, allowing the audience a first-hand look into the world of slam poetry competitions. The poets featured in the film are Selah Geissler, Travis T., Melvin Won, Pat Borja and Kealoha Wong, the founding father of Hawai’i Slam and First Thursdays. Wong recently visited Maui’s public libraries to support the state’s Summer Reading program. Sitting in front of a group of people at the Kahului Public Library, children as well as adults, he wore a bandana over a long ponytail of dark thick hair and smiled with such aloha I couldn’t help but smile back. He began by inviting us to yell in the library. When we stopped he dove into one of his pieces called “Recess.” His lyrical capabilities were impressive as well as inspiring. His style combined hip-hop, local boy and mad scientist, delivering metaphors and similes that gave me chills. By the end of his piece I could understand why his slams were the largest in the world. He recited a few more pieces, then led us all in a word game. Later we freewrote using rhyming association starting with the phrase, “If I ruled the world.” The little girl next to me wrote, “If I ruled the world my cat would get fat after I fed it cookies.” Wong told us he’d lived in San Francisco and gone to their slams in the city. He decided to bring slam poetry back home to Hawai’i. He also spoke of his Youth Speaks, his free after-school writing and performance workshop for teens. He told us about his CD and how he had been collaborating with artists like Barry Flanagan and Hawaiian Ryan. After everyone else had left, Wong told me that Poetry in Paradise is an important film because it showed the first time the Hawai’i team made it to the Nationals. “I really just wanted the team to know how good they were and how good Hawai’i is,” he said. He was excited that the team had placed 25th out of 80. He said they’ve gotten better since, placing 7th out of 75 in the last National Slam. He ended by telling me that he hoped that Slam Poetry would “make change or shift paradigms.” If a poet can touch one person’s life, he said, “than that is really all I can ask for.” Hawaii’ Slam screens at 2 p.m. on July 17 at the McCoy Theater. LUMINARIES Movie stars who generate as much light as heat

Maui Film Festival at Wailea Special Events

By Jennifer Russo I don’t do award shows. I get bored watching the Oscars, the Emmys or the Grammys. I’m completely uninterested in red carpets and the whole “who are you wearing” entertainment, to say nothing of the awards, which seem totally inconsequential. So even I paused when I got excited over the tributes that the Maui Film Festival was handing out. Was I getting star struck? I mean, the Maui Film Festival is honoring Jessica Biel—one of the “Sexiest Women Alive,” according to Esquire—with the Shining Star Award. I am sure Film Festival founder and organizer Barry Rivers would assure me that her sexy status is not the reason that she is a recognized “Luminary,” a film artist whose talents transcend celebrity, whose radiance generates as much light as heat. She’s not so much hot as she is illuminating, and if you’re not sure, check out Saturday’s Celestial Cinema feature film The Illusionist. Biel stars as a doomed Duchess in love with an artist but promised to a heartless prince. Just before they show her film, Biel will be there in person to get her award. I was also really excited to see John C. Reilly among the film artists recognized at the festival. He will be honored at the Grand Wailea on June 17 with the Navigator Award after the filmmaker’s panels. Reilly has done some awesome work. You might recall him in Boogie Nights as an earnest porn star, or the cuckolded husband in The Good Girl. In 2003 Reilly was in Chicago, The Gangs of New York and The Hours. More recently he is in the current films A Prairie Home Companion with Meryl Streep and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby with Will Ferrell.

Then there’s Joan Allen. Allen will be accepting the festival’s 2006 Galaxy Award, recognizing her for her ongoing contributions to film artistry and excellence. Allen stars in Bonneville and Good Sharma, which are in post-production, and is working on The Bourne Ultimatum scheduled for next year. Her past film work includes The Upside of Anger with Kevin Costner, The Contender, Pleasantville, Face-Off, Nixon and Searching for Bobby Fisher. You can also catch Patricia Clarkson receiving the 2006 Pathfinder Award and Michele Yeoh accepting the 2006 Rainmaker Award on June 16 at the Four Seasons Resort. These tributes will be preceded by a Bombay Sapphire Mauitini reception at 4 p.m. MTW

Maui Film Festival fare Reading the Maui Film Festival at Wailea’s menu makes me hungry. Not hungry for just anything, but hungry for haute cuisine gourmet food. Like grilled lobster tail with lemongrass butter, or tamari marinated lamb chops, or even an island catch of the day with Kamuela tomato, pickled ginger and scallion sauce. These are all going to get served at the Taste of the Islands Opening Night Twilight reception, and I’m really beginning to worry about my kitchen skills. I’m a good cook, but how can I compete with tempura tiger prawns, dim sum, or Hawaiian vintage chocolate fondue with fruit? I don’t have a clue how you make nigiri sushi or sesame sea salad and cucumber namasu, but they do. What scrumptious combination of foods make up the siu mai? I guess I don’t need to know because all of these delicious delicacies will be served at the Four Seasons Resort on June 14. Still sitting at my kitchen table, I’m now salivating over the thought of sitting at the Starry Night MoonDance Raw bar, stuffing my face with fresh Pacific Oysters with mignonette, lobster cocktail and ahi poke with kukui on June 15 at the Tommy Bahama Tropical Café. For some reason I peer into my own fridge, but find nothing worth eating raw in here—just barbecue sauce, soymilk and some mystery science Tupperware. Instead of dried up leftovers in styrofoam, I could have satay, which is chicken, beef and shrimp, hopefully skewered on bam-

boo, with peanut dipping sauce. I could dig deeper into the fridge, but what for? I am back to picturing myself lip locked late on the night of June 16 with chocolate peanut butter terrine, mouthing chocolate decadence and grand marnier and white chocolate crème brulee at the Taste of Chocolate. I am at the chocolate fountain pouring and pairing liquid chocolate love with strawberries, marshmallows, madelines and anything else I can get my hands on. Sweet tooth activated, I peer into the pantry, canned corn, taco seasoning, stoned wheat thins and brown sugar. Reality snaps me back, my appetite spurned. Now I am starving, and staring bleakly into dreary cupboards. I really wish I was at Taste of Wailea on June 17, where the mouth-watering creations from 10 different Wailea restaurants come together for one event on the Gold and Emerald golf courses. I could be enjoying braised short ribs from Capische, along with Mulligan’s Guinness-marinated rack of lamb. I would be sipping a MauiTini while filling up on Grand Wailea’s sautéed kampachi with Korean pancakes, and the Four Season’s truffled Keahole lobster corn dogs. For dessert I could have the Marriott’s banana toffee tower and key lime pie. I guess I’ll get up and make myself a sandwich. My stomach simply cannot wait for all this gourmet eating to begin. Until then I guess I have to settle for the magnificent menu.

Father’s Day Sunday, June 18 [HOLIDAY] I cannot mention Father’s Day without acknowledging my own father. Though not responsible for bringing me into this world (he adopted me when I was seven), he is perhaps the person most responsible for any success I’ve had in it. Not all the lessons he attempted to teach me stuck—just ask my wife—but those that did made me a better man. Without his advice to always respect and honor women—a lesson I took to heart—I wouldn’t have an amazing wife to tolerate the piles of debris he told me never to let accumulate around the house (still working on that one). I know firsthand that not all dads inspire the same reverence as mine. (Notice that I’m not exactly singing the praises of my biological father). But Father’s Day is for the celebration of the very best dads; those who provide, advise, coach and push us. The dads who see themselves in us, and teach us that we can achieve far more than we believe. Because, like it or not, there’s a little bit of our fathers in every one of us. So today, treat dad to brunch, take him golfing, or call him on the phone. And if you still live at home and really want to make him happy, pick up the debris you’ve left around the house. Your future wife will thank you for it. [COREY NIELSEN]

Tropical Fusion Thursday, June 15, 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz [ISLAND MUSIC/DANCE] Tahibrawaiian presents Tropical Fusion, Part I, featuring live music from Paakai and Versatile, as well as a dynamic Afro-Brazilian martial arts performance from Capoeira Rio Maui and Tahitian drumming and dance from Orama Here Hia. Lahaina Tattoo will also be around to give away stuff. Cover: $10.

It’s a Fuganomenom! Friday, 10 p.m. at Hapa’s; Saturday, 2 p.m. at Borders Books, 10 p.m. at Casanova [HAWAIIAN/REGGAE] Paula Fuga was the belle of the ball at this year’s Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. No, she wasn’t nominated for anything—that’s no matter. It’s just that everyone recognizes a star when they see—or hear—one. Just two years after she auditioned for American Idol, Fuga was selected by Jack Johnson to join him in this year’s popular Kokua Festival. Now the Hawaiian girl from Waimanalo is being touted as the silk-voiced young queen of the next wave of contemporary Hawaiian music that innovatively integrates R&B and reggae with traditional elements, like ‘olelo Hawai’i and ‘ukulele, to produce what is called “maoli music.” Fuga will be playing this weekend’s shows with the One Love ‘Ohana Band, and with special guest Innavision at Hapa’s. $12 at Hapa’s; $10 at Casanova. Her acoustic performance at Borders Books in Kahului is free. For more info, visit paulafugamusic.com.

Why Shopping Is Good For You Friday at Macy’s, Queen Ka’ahumanu Center [RETAIL THERAPY/CHARITY EVENT] There is something very invigorating about shopping. It’s that thrill of finding something you want. There it is, a baseball cap that you haven’t seen anyone else wearing yet and it’s your favorite color, too! Or, those wedge heels with the lace up your leg that you’ve been pining over in magazines. No matter what the product, there’s a certain rush in finding it. Then, like a panther on the prowl, you slyly approach. Circling the item as you prepare to pounce. Gotcha! After checking price and size, you try it on, love it and carry it around happily while you maintain the search… for more stuff. That feeling of being in control is intoxicating. It’s completely up to you what you buy and the item doesn’t say, “I’m not interested in you being my purchaser.” The item doesn’t have a choice. I love a good power trip. I also love having new additions to my wardrobe. So, when I found out Macy’s was having a “Community Shopping Day,” where the proceeds go to local non-profit organizations like the Humane Society, I was stoked. It’s just the excuse I need to go find a new swimsuit. It’s for charity after all. Tickets are only $10 to get you discounts storewide, access to product samples, a chance to win $500, live entertainment throughout the day, and piece of mind knowing you’re doing a good deed. The Ho’olaulea will follow in Banyan Tree Park, and will include a presentation of the Royal Court, food booths, live entertainment, and a gathering of local artisans depicting this year’s theme—“mo’olelo aloha” or “express love in everything”—as well as Hawaiian landscapes, warrior paintings/ sketches, Kamehameha tributes, Hawaiian sculptures and more.

There’s a high pressure system moving up from the south...

Since being robbed of his proper place in the White House, former Vice President Al Gore has turned humanitarian crusader and delivered his urgent and authoritative lecture on global warming to more than a thousand audiences all over the world. Director Davis Guggenheim expands Gore’s highly polished multimedia lecture into dramatic form with personal footage of Gore that exemplifies his 40-year commitment to a subject that is consuming our Earth. Gore discharges party lines and embraces global warming as the “biggest moral challenge facing global civilization” in an imperative and frightening film that promises to shift the priorities of everyone who sees it.

An Inconvenient Truth

★★★★★ Rated PG/100 mins.

Gore’s trademark stiffness fades as his deeply felt passion and well-informed knowledge of global warming reveals shocking facts about the rapidly diminishing state of our planet due to the vastly damaging effects of carbon dioxide that warms the earth’s surface by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. “By burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests, we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising,” he says. “Over the past 50 years, the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history.” Panicked fear takes hold as photos of Africa’s snow-covered Kilimanjaro in

1970 compare to its current barren status. A photo of Boulder Glacier National Park taken in 1932 looks nothing like the one taken at the same spot in 1988. Most distressing is a computer-generated map that shows the devastating flooding effect on all countries if global sea levels rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica where billions of gallons of water are currently melting every second. The film undeniably shows that we have entered a period of catastrophic consequences that can only be reduced if we begin to act immediately to reduce carbon dioxide output. In the face of outrageous calamity, Gore remains optimistic in charting concise data to show how global warming can be tamed if we as global citizens act more responsibly in our daily lives. Actions like changing over to fluorescent light bulbs, driving less, recycling more, and planting trees are some of the examples given that anyone can do to help stop global warming. More information is available at www.climatecrisis.net. “We have five to 10 years in which to turn back the impending dangers of global warming,” says Gore. After seeing this movie, you may ask yourself why Al Gore didn’t run on global warming as his singular platform issue for the 2004 election. An Inconvenient Truth is a thoroughly convincing and educational film that points to a far more acute crisis than terrorism, and shows how we can fix the problem. Everyone in the world should see this movie now. An Inconvenient Truth screens at 5 p.m. on June 18 at the MACC’s Castle Theater. MTW

Festival Gone Wild Where to rub elbows with the stars in Wailea You can’t call something a “festival” without throwing some parties. We hope you made it to Wednesday’s opening reception but if you missed it, no worries. Here’s the line-up for the rest of the festival:

Thursday, June 15 Starry Night Moon Dance. Enjoy a live performance by Ohana Groove while stuffing your face with heavy pupus and “accidentally” brushing up against big names in “the Biz.” Who knows who you’ll run into while shoving your way up to the bar for your complimentary Bombay Sapphire “Maui Tinis” and Bacardi Mai Tais? The price includes the Celestial Cinema double feature prior to the event, so you’ll already have something to talk about. How convenient! $95 in advance, $105 at the door. 10 p.m.-1 a.m. at Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Café. (Films begin at 8 p.m. and include The Lake House and Water.)

Friday, June 16 Awards and Tributes. Last year, this was actually more like a talk show than an awards ceremony. The actors were honored with said award, but then they sat down on the couch and chatted and even answered some questions from the crowd. Just remember to get there early to enjoy the Bombay Sapphire Maui Tini reception. Also, remember to watch your alcohol intake. Last year someone we know had one too many and decided that Mike Myers really needed that someone’s specific acknowledgements, so they yelled them up to the stage. It wasn’t pretty, folks. This year, the awards are as follows: Pathfinder Award— Patricia Clarkson (Good Night & Good Luck, Pieces of April). Galaxy Award—Joan Allen (The Upside of Anger, The Bourne Supremacy). Rainmaker Award—Michelle Yeoh, formerly Yang Zi Chong (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memiors of a Geisha). $40 in advance, $44 at the door. 5-7 p.m. at the Four Seasons Resort Wailea.

Taste of Chocolate. Chocolate fanatics will come together to enjoy exotic chocolate desserts, a chocolate fountain, ports, wines and “Chocolate Bombay Sapphire Silk MauiTinis.” This is another event where you’re likely to spot the Hollywood elite. Two friends went last year and said it was so good that they “just couldn’t stop eating and drinking!” Once again, the Celestial Cinema double feature is included. Talk amongst yourselves—I’ll even give you a topic: the movies you all just watched together! I don’t know that I’ve ever experienced a chocolate coma and a wine coma concurrently. One can only hope the two forces combined has the sedating effect to stop me from dipping hot men into the chocolate fountain. $125 in advance, $138 at the door. 10 p.m.-12 a.m. at the Four Seasons Resort Wailea. (Films begin at 8 p.m. and include The Oh in Ohio and The Groomsmen.)

Saturday, June 17 Taste of Wailea. More congregating and drinking Bombay Sapphire inspired drinks, this time with delicacies from the finest restaurants in Wailea. Check out the line-up: Grand Wailea, Four Seasons, Tommy Bahama’s, Mulligan’s, Fairmont Kea Lani/ Nick’s Fish Market, Diamond Resort, Capische?, Spago, Wailea Beach Marriott, and Renaissance. Top chefs galore! After you get your fill of the delectable morsels, roll yourself over to the Celestial Cinema. You guessed it! This event also includes the double feature, but there’s a twist. The second movie is a surprise screening, so you have to go to find out what it is. Any Jessica Biel fans around? You know, she was voted “Sexiest Woman Alive” in Esquire. Yeah, there’s a tribute for her before the shows. $195 in advance, $215 at the door. 4:307 p.m. at the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course, Private Function Terrace. (Films begin at 8 p.m. and include The Illusionist and the surprise special screening preceded by the Jessica Biel tribute.) MTW

Where people are at (mentally or physically) is as much an influence on how they see the world as who they are, overall. Keep that in mind this week, when you encounter some diverse viewpoints which are practically incompatible with your own. They may be more moment—or location—dependent than you think, though, and therefore subject to change. Give folks a chance. They’re just circling the block and looking at the scenery. They’ll come back around to where you are eventually. Give them some time.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’re at risk now of being totally swamped—by emotion, paperwork or unfinished projects. Treading water isn’t going to do it—you’ve got to be proactive and eliminate some of the things threatening to drown you before they do just that. Next week’s New Moon is a great time to start with a semiblank slate and set yourself up for a productive couple of weeks, but that’ll only work if you’re not trapped beneath the unproductive detritus of the last month or so. What can you get rid of, Cancer? Better decide quickly, then cut it before you’re pinned beneath it. Leos have an unfortunate tendency to throw money at their problems, or at whatever obstacles appear in their paths. First of all, your budget can’t always afford that kind of no-brainer resolution. Secondly, it makes your life occasionally easier than it ought to be, thereby keeping you from realizing your full potential. There are times when your wallet is the only effective solution, and other times when ingenuity, hard work and resourcefulness are a better substitute.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Last week I wrote about finding someone who’ll deeply respect, appreciate and support you, but I’m worried now that I wasn’t entirely clear. After all, you can’t go up to some stranger, tell them how fantastic you are, and hope that everything will fall naturally into place after that. What I meant to say is that there’s almost certainly someone who already respects and adores you, even if you haven’t exactly noticed. Find them, and thrill them (and yourself) by letting them in.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Have you lost something, Venus? I’m not talking about your wallet—this is more along the lines of your virginity or your mind, though not as big a deal as either of those. Even though what you’re missing isn’t as concrete as your car keys or that pen you were just using, you should still adopt the same search strategies. Think back to the last time you remember having it. Retrace your steps. You can get back what you’ve lost (or what’s been taken from you), but only if you look. Give up before you’ve begun and I’ll guarantee: it’s probably lost forever.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Weirdly, your desire for forward progress and evolution is totally at odds with your craving for new horizons and opportunities this week. Perhaps this is just you getting focused and resisting the kinds of distractions a general expansion of your world would produce. Or perhaps you’re worried that your commitment to your current path isn’t strong enough to resist those temptations. In any case, are you really on the right track? It might be, but you better be sure, or you’re going to have spend time doubling back to head up one of the alternative routes, later on, when you figure your shit out. You’re notoriously gimmick-resistant. That’s fortunate, because this week you’re likely to encounter some doozies. Lame-ass come-on lines, bullshit sob stories, and too-good-to-be-true promises will be flying in all directions around you, and you’re bound to get caught in the crossfire. Just do your best not to get too agitated by all this real-time spam. The people employing these cliché tactics are just too dopey or pathetic to know better. Compassion, or at least neutrality, is probably a better response than anger, which would only, perversely, encourage them.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I know you try to control your temper, but there are times when your honest rage is the only appropriate response. Who are you trying to protect, after all? Get mad, damn it. You ought to be. It’s one thing to be forgiving and compassionate, it’s another to let yourself be used or taken advantage of with such frequency. Don’t act as if you haven’t been cooperating in your own exploitation. You have. But now it’s time to break free of that shit, and, therefore, a little fury is required. Let yourself go there, finally. It’s about time.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I’ve definitely lost many hours of my life to video games and computer stuff. That’s probably not the best use of my time, in the grand scheme of things, but they were enjoyable hours, nonetheless, and certainly entertaining. Not every minute of every day has to be productive and positive and forward-moving. It’s nice when you can manage that, but if you’re having fun, it’s okay to let some time slip through the cracks without actually getting you anywhere. Keep that in mind this week. If you’re having enough fun, it’s okay to relax and enjoy it, at least for now. It’s when you’re having too much fun for too long that you can get into trouble.

Don’t force things. Sometimes someone just isn’t in a position to figure out how cool you are. S/he needs time to come around, and s/he’s certainly not going to realize it while you’re shoving your unique talents in his or her face. That’ll just make you look desperate. Now’s the time to be cool and collected. Play hard to get. I know, that’s a challenge, because s/he’s not exactly chasing you. But s/he might, if s/he sees you receding into the distance. S/he also might not—that’s a risk. But if that’s the case, s/he’d never be that into it, no matter how hard you pushed it. So relax. It’s the only viable way, anyway.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Some things just aren’t worth your time. It’s not that they’re out of your reach. Quite the contrary; they’re actually extremely easy—provided you’re willing to put in the time. But we’re talking so much time that it just might not be the best idea for you, especially given your general state of impatience. This is like one of those amusement park rides that you wait an hour in line for, ride the thing for 90 seconds, then wonder if there was a point to it at all. Sometimes it’s just better to ditch the line and go make your own fun.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Listen to that rain come down. It’s pouring outside your window. You’re sitting there enjoying the sound when you realize: you forgot to stop at the store. That means that whatever hedonistic pleasure you were planning on enjoying tonight—be it cookies, a DVD or a bubble bath—probably won’t happen, since you forgot to get the requisite supplies. You’re in a quandary now! Is it worth a little discomfort in order to enjoy the luxuries you’d planned? Or would you rather endure the distress of not having them? CAERIEL@YAHOO.COM

Breaking Your Heart Only time can heal your broken heart, just as only time can heal his broken arms and legs. – Miss Piggy

We are seeking a competitive, extremely motivated

Sales Person to help build our Employment, Rentals, Real Estate, Back Page and Insider sections. This position is perfect for the person who enjoys working independently and thrives on being rewarded for the energy they put into their work every day. Compensation includes base, commission and bonuses. We provide full benefits and great work environment. Email resume to: tommy@mauitime.com No phone calls, please.

It’s an adage that needs updating, for it seems to me there are three things in this world of which you can be certain: death, taxes and break-ups. Nowadays, I would venture to say that most of us who have experienced the pure bliss and euphoric highs of falling in love have also descended into the depths and agonizing hell by having our heart ripped out of our chest, thrown onto the sidewalk and smashed into a pulpy mess. Apparently, the bitter end of relationships also turns out to be a good marketing tool. A quick Google search for “breakups” yields no less than 1.82 million results for how to survive through them or get your lover back, how to reconcile your finances, where to place the blame and which celebrities are doing it in style. Then there’s The Break Up, the new “romantic” comedy with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn that depicts the wretched snowballing effect one breakup has on a two-year relationship gone sour. Witness the painfully petty antics and gruesome games one couple goes through, proving they can hate with the same intensity with which they once loved each other! Now that’s entertainment. And naturally, there are tons of books on the subject. Like last year’s It’s Called a Breakup Because It’s Broken: The Smart Girl’s Breakup Buddy by Greg Behrendt, the author of that annoyingly over-hyped self-help guide He’s Just Not That Into You, and his wife, Amiira Ruotola-Behrendt. In the book, the happily married couple (blech!) provides tips on how to get over Revisionist Romance Disorder and Dumper’s Remorse, how to get out of bed and not hide at the bottom of a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey, how to divvy up the mutual friends, how to not answer calls from the ex, including ringtones to program into your cell phone so you don’t pick up late night booty calls, notes on rebounding and buying a vibrator, and even a recipe for brownies to make in appreciation of your poor friends who have to put up with you during this excruciating phase of often embarrassing conduct. My general modus operandi of breakup behavior entails about a month of hibernation, wherein I soak in bubble baths and the occasional bottle (or case, let’s be honest) of vino, listen to Mazzy Star and Sade, read lovelorn poetry to myself—my heartbroken favorites being from the compilations To Hell With Love and Kiss Off: Poems to Set You Free—and excessive crying, after which I move as far away from the scene of the crime as possible. Oh, and lots and lots of chocolate. But everyone deals with a break-up in different ways—whether they adeptly recover from it and move on with lessons learned, or end up forever tormenting the rest of the dating pool with exponentially increasing self-esteem issues and unresolved relationship baggage. “Joe,” a 30-something welder from California, told me his recent break-up happened over the phone. He and his girlfriend had been going out for eight months when he got recruited to Maui for a job. Two months later, his lady-in-“waiting” said she could wait no more and dumped him. At this point, he doesn’t even want to consider friendship. He’s bummed but resigned about the whole thing. “You can’t beat yourself up about it,” he said, over a beer at the Tiki Lounge in Kihei just two days after the break-up. “If it’s good enough for her, it’s gotta be good enough for me, right?” Obviously, not everyone is as decisive. One high school teacher I met at LuLu’s, “Bob,” said he and his girlfriend of six years have broken up three times in the past month. But the reason for the break-ups—infidelity on her part, he said—is not as harrowing as the reason for the reconciliations. “It’s better than being alone,” he said, staring at my cleavage. “Besides, I would rather find someone better while I’ve got something going on with someone else so I’m not ‘desperado.’” Yeah… I’m gonna pass on that drink, Bob. Thanks. Samantha Campos is pleased to discover that she has not yet succumbed to presbycusis and is therefore in the market for the 17-kilohertz Mosquitotone so she can text message all her friends during class.
