LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR I would like to say that after reading Miss Carrie Courtney’s article [“Couch Surfing Flat Waves,” May 11, 2006] I think she just may have single-handedly sabotaged what little hope the homeless people had for understanding and support.

I, myself decided to give Maui a try on my own with what money I saved from my secure job on the mainland and have quite a different version that did not put me on the harbor.

To blame Maui and its supposed bias and high costs is not fair if you choose to leave what you have that is secure to live in a place that is already well-known for being expensive. Yes, cost of living is high here. However, I don’t believe this is why her adventure was a disappointment.

She and her friends chose to put themselves in this situation with the poor choices they made. It does not matter where you go, you will find it just as hard if you are not prepared.

Before I moved here with just a suitcase, I researched food costs, housing and jobs along with transportation availability. I prepared myself for this move by saving a specific amount of money and lined up a place to live via the internet (Maui News classifieds) along with job interviews that I got to by public transportation or cab.

Carrie and her friends were not prepared for this move and perhaps expected things to happen for them.

Why weren’t they willing to rent a fur-

nished room in someone’s home separately until they could get something together. It is called sacrifice and we have all had to make them at times. Was it imperative they all live together? All or nothing? Please!!??

She shared her cigarettes? She had money for cigarettes? If I were the type of person to generalize people and base all homeless people on her story alone, I would have limited sympathy for the homeless.

Why does she feel that she deserves help with low-income housing? I would think that low-income housing is for people in need such as elderly, disabled, families with children to feed first. Does she have a special need? If this is the case, than she deserves this. Most of the homeless people don’t have parents they can ask $3,000 for rent for a house.

Reading her last statement on how we should try “studying, scrutinizing and recognizing them,” I would like to ask Carrie how she plans on helping the homeless?

Now that she has a place of her own, will she be willing to take any homeless into her home?

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in a May 12, 2006 press release on her signing HB 2175 supporting “market-based” sustainable energy development: “Through this new law we are reaffirming the state’s responsibility to Lead by Example to establish a secure energy and economic future for the people of Hawai’i. This new law, which was passed with bipartisan support by the Legislature, will help state agencies increase energy efficiency and will set an example for residents and businesses to embrace energy conservation and support energy alternatives.”

What she didn’t say: There are lots of other ways Lingle could “Lead by Example” in the struggle to bring cleaner, sustainable and efficient energy to the islands. For instance, she could stop accepting campaign contributions from Big Oil, which is not clean, sustainable or efficient. On Dec. 27, 2005, Lingle accepted $1,000 from the refiner Tesoro Hawai’i’s political action committee. That brought Tesoro’s total contributions to her so far to $3,200, according to the governor’s most recent campaign filing. Like all the Big Oil companies benefiting from a volatile market and Persian Gulf region, Tesoro’s profits were way, way up in the first quarter of 2006: 54 percent higher, in fact. I can think of no better way to stand for sustainable energy than by publicly denouncing that kind of profiteering.

Condoversy Haleakala Shores resident fights to hang a sign inside her apartment Disputes between condominium homeowners associations and residents are nothing new on Maui. But a recent clash between Haleakala Shores’ association of apartment owners and one of its residents, Jean Prandini, has some unique twists. On March 20, 2006, Prandini filed a complaint against the association and its property management company, Management Consultants of Hawai’i, Inc. (MCH), on five counts ranging from violations of unfair and deceptive trade practice statutes to Prandini’s right to decorate her own apartment.

The trouble began in October 2004 when Prandini, 62, hung an Ed Case for U.S. House of Representatives political poster in her apartment.

Even though the sign was inside her home, it was visible from the outside, so the association assessed her a $25 fine. When Prandini challenged the fine, insisting the bylaws couldn’t trump her right to hang something inside her own home, she claims association officials harassed and threatened her with further fines if she failed to comply.

Prandini removed the sign a month later, but apparently then discovered that MCH—on behalf of the association—had already withdrawn the fine from her checking account. Prandini was outraged, since MCH had gained access to several residents’ checking accounts by enrolling them in an electronic funds transfer program to automatically deduct maintenance fees and electricity bills from checking accounts. According to MCH’s enrollment application, any other charge to a resident’s account “has to be authorized… by the owner, in writing.”

Prandini claims MCH then failed to respond to repeated letters and appeal requests, which also made her miss the 30-day deadline to appeal directly to the association. In late December 2005, MCH notified Prandini that she still had an outstanding $25 charge.

Over a year later, in January 2006, they began assessing late fees on the past due balance.

In a May 18, 2006 hearing on Prandini’s complaint, Circuit Court Judge Joseph Cardoza instructed both parties to enter into mediation.

John Zalewski, an attorney with the Oahu-based firm Case, Lombardi and Pettite, which is representing MCH, said the judge acted wisely in sending the case to mediation.

LC Watch Sack ‘N Save ‘N Suspend In a rare move against a major corporation, the Maui County Liquor Control Board of Adjudication suspended the Wailuku Foodland’s liquor license for 14 days because of repeated incidents involving the selling of alcohol to minors.

The first two incidents were in the summer of 2001 and late 2002, and in the following years Foodland and its parent company Sack ‘N Save Foods instituted a number of reforms, attorney Craig Nakamura told the board during its May 4, 2006 hearing. “They are some of the most comprehensive in the state,” said Nakamura.

Nakamura and Sack ‘N Save officials told the board that all stores now carried signs warning employees they would get fired if they sold alcohol to a minor. They installed cash registers requiring cashiers to type in dates of birth for alcohol sales.

And they made sure each cashier signed a statement of the rules governing alcohol sales every day before opening their register.

Zalewski blamed an “unfortunate clerical error” for MCH’s withdrawing the original fine from Prandini’s account, not deception. He also said MCH returned the money to Prandini shortly after the unauthorized transaction. This claim was apparently news to Lance Collins, Prandini’s attorney.

“The first we heard that was in court,” said Collins, who is also running for a Maui County Council seat. “Mrs. Prandini hasn’t seen it [her $25 fine]. I haven’t seen it.”

State statutes set minimum penalties for unfair and deceptive trade practices and they get stiffer when it comes to seniors. Since Prandini is 62, Collins says she may be entitled to at least a $5,000 judgment. She is also seeking punitive damages and attorney’s fees. But money is not as important as the principle for Prandini, said Collins.

“She just wants her $25 back,” said Collins. “Anything over and above that and attorney’s fees, Mrs. Prandini is considering donating to a worthy cause.”

however she likes, Collins said. Though she would not say if the candidate she endorsed had anything to do with her troubles, Collins added that Prandini did believe her criticism of the association and her vocal nature inflamed the issue.

“Their treatment of my client was outrageous,” said Collins. “They should be made an example of.” MTW

Yet none of those safeguards seemed to help Foodland last summer.

On July 15, 2005, the LC pulled a minor decoy sting operation on the store.

After selecting a six-pack of 12 ounce bottles of Smirnoff Twisted V Green Apple Malt Liquor—like an adult would spend hard-earned money on something like that—she walked up to a young cashier who just happened to be coming off a five-days suspension for some previous violation of Foodland regulations.

“Don’t you remember me from school?” the decoy apparently asked the cashier, who didn’t, but rang up the sale anyway without asking to see any ID. And that was that.

Nakamura and Sack ‘N Save officials even pointed out that their “family-run” business handles four million transactions each year and employs well over a thousand people. Perhaps it helped, because the board could have yanked their license for up to 30 days.

What’s with the Racist Ad in The Maui News?

I’m really taking to the Wheeling, West Virginia-based Ogden Newspaper Group owning The Maui News—and every other paper on this island except this one. There are all sorts of advantages to reading a paper that now belongs to a chain that’s based in one of the more rural, conservative parts of the country.

Like the fact that every two weeks, The Maui News includes an issue of the Ogden-published American Life & Traditions. The May 17 issue is 16 pages of mostly middle America fluff and commemorative coin ads, but there’s one notable exception: in the upper left corner of Page 8 is an ad for the “Classic Edition” of Helen Bannerman’s incredibly controversial and racist book Little Black Sambo.

MAUICOUNTY WEDNESDAY, May 17 In the wake of USA Today’s revelation that the National Security Agency has been building a massive database of every telephone call made in the U.S., state Representative Brian Schatz (D, 25th District) wants to know whether local phone companies were “forced by the federal government to divulge the phone records of Hawai’i residents.” For some reason, the idea of the federal government wading barefoot through our private phone records—who called whom and when—has Schatz perturbed. But why should it? Didn’t President George W. Bush just say that we had nothing to worry about where this phone record/wiretapping American citizens stuff was concerned? When has he steered us wrong? Okay, there’s been the whole high gas prices crisis, lackluster economy, rising inflation, ballooning national debt, exploding trade deficit, flaccid Hurricane Katrina response, and that whole invasion of Iraq thing, but when has he crossed us lately? Anyway, Schatz has asked state Attorney General Mark Bennett and Public Utilities Commissioner Carlito Caliboso to get to the bottom of it. “If the Bush Administration is culling through call records of Hawai’i’s citizens, we need to know,” Schatz said in a release sent out last night. “Right now, we are all operating in the dark, and the public deserves to be informed about what’s going on.”

THURSDAY, May 18 Hey everybody, we’ve got your official Congressional Power Rankings! They come courtesy of Congress.org, and boy, are they fascinating. Now we all know that Time Magazine recently named our own U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka one of the worst Senators around. Now that’s quite a distinction—especially considering Akaka is in a primary election battle against U.S. Representative Ed Case (D, 2nd District)—but it’s not really born out in the Congress.org rankings. There, Akaka is listed as the Senate’s 71st most powerful member.

Okay, I’ll give you this: that’s pretty poor. On a Bell Curve, that’s a failing grade. Guy couldn’t even get his own Native Hawaiian Recognition Act to a floor debate without constant bitching and moaning. But here’s where the Power Rankings get really fun.

You see, over in the House, Case barely registers at all with his 410 ranking.

Considering there are 435 House members, that ranking means 94 percent of the entire House is more powerful than our own Ed Case. And why did Case register so abysmally low?

FRIDAY, May 19 Despite bringing in $422.5 million in the first three months of this year—a 21 percent increase over last year— Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) somehow managed to lose $28.1 million, according to today’s Pacific Business News. This, at a time when cruise vacations have never been more popular. And why shouldn’t they be? It’s been nearly four years since that awful, awful Cuba Gooding, Jr. “comedy” Boat Trip played in theaters. Wall St. analysts warned the industry would take a generation to recover, but cooler heads clearly saw through the film’s embarassing homophobia and gratuitious use of Roger Moore and moved on. But I digress. According to the story, the company blames high fuel prices (I hear you, brother) and “significant startup costs.” Yeah… that’s corporate-speak for “payroll.” Specifically, the payroll associated with hiring lots of Americans for its NCL American operations. Like the sea, I suppose the labor market is also a harsh mistress.

SATURDAY, May 20 Looks like state Representative Schatz is pretty much out of luck in his quest to find out if the NSA has been pouring through our phone records—at least as far as Attorney General Bennett is concerned.

“The precise nature of what the NSA is actually doing, along with any rationale and justification for its actions, has not yet been determined, and obtaining the necessary information may face security clearance or other restrictions on classified information,” is Deputy Attorney General Girard D. Lau’s somewhat obvious response to Schatz’s inquiry. But he did leave some wiggle room for some potential gumshoe work: “As a result,” Lau wrote, “it is difficult for our office to take any action at this time, except to monitor congressional investigations or inquiries into the matter.” Woohoo!

Schatz got the AG’s office to agree to “monitor congressional investigations.”

chairman of Hawai’i Air Ambulance, said he’s opting for a management shakeup to try to stem his company’s troubles. And believe me, he’s got troubles. In the corporate world, there’s no better solution than shaking things up at the top, even if the guy right at the top (that would be Kluger) stays exactly where he is. Anyway, Kluger hired three former Eagle Air Med executives who will bring cash and new aircraft to the company. This is good news, but considering two fatal HAA crashes since 2004 have killed six people, it’s just a first step. And a small first step at that. But don’t try telling that to Kluger. “[This] will not only strengthen our company,” Kluger told The Maui News, “but continue to provide the highest level of quality care to Hawai’i’s people.”

SUNDAY, May 21 Hey, did you see that Associated Press story on the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources in today’s Maui News? The embattled agency scored a perfect 54 out of a possible 54 on the latest Kauai dam inspection report. That’s right, kids: every single one of that island’s 54 dams has at least one “detrimental condition” that could lead to its collapse. For those who’ve forgotten: seven people died during those horrible rains a few months ago because one of the Kauai dams, which dated back to the plantation era, fell apart.

The water was still receding when it emerged that state DLRN officials had basically decided some time ago to ignore the ancient, earthen dams that dotted the Kauai landscape. Though I’m sure, like all government decisions, it seemed like a good idea at the time… Speaking of bad news, in that same paper Andy Kluger,

In other news, the state’s public housing office is in chaos. According to today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the Housing and Community Development Corporation (HCDCH) will soon split into two separate agencies. One will focus on getting poor people into local public housing units and the other will concentrate on getting affordable housing projects built. If this sounds familiar, it’s because this is how it used to be before 1997, when the Legislature merged the two agencies into the HCDCH for “efficiency” reasons that obviously didn’t pan out. According to the article, no one is sure who will end up running either agency. And why should they be? They’ve only been planning this for the last year. Oh, and there are currently 621 empty housing units that no one seems able to fill. Other than that, things are fine. So fine that Governor Linda Lingle hasn’t felt the need to get involved in any of this. Guess her big reelection campaign against that one Democrat guy who mumbled something about running against her is just too taxing right now.

TUESDAY, May 23 You know, there are those who say that poor people don’t vote Republican because they think Republicans don’t care about poor people. I have no idea where they get ideas like that. Or why a guy like Cuba Gooding, Jr. made a movie like Boat Trip.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES Police in the Ibaraki prefecture north of Tokyo arrested a 70-year-old man in April after the manager of a 7Eleven reported that the man had menaced him with a chainsaw. The would-be customer apparently came to the store every day only to read from various magazines for sale, and after several hours, the manager finally ordered him to leave. The man returned a short time later with the chainsaw, cranked it up, and shouted, “I’ll cut you to pieces.” He then laid it down and resumed reading and was still reading when police arrived.

FINE POINTS OF THE LAW A female guard at a New York state juvenile detention center was raped, beaten and kidnapped at knifepoint in 2004 by one of the inmates, who escaped with the guard in a car and remained at large until he was recaptured six hours later, but when the guard applied for union insurance payments, she was informed that the contract paid kidnapping benefits only for incidents of at least eight hours’ duration. According to a March Albany Times Union story, she received worker compensation and about $10,000 in other benefits, but if she had remained captive for two more hours, she would have received between $40,000 and $100,000 more.

YES, MY FAULT Michelle Srun, 34, testifying for leniency for her accused-rapist husband in a Montgomery County, Md., court in March, said she must be partly responsible for his attacks on several underage girls, in that she belittled and abused him for years with her overbearing personality and had multiple affairs during their marriage—six simultaneously during one stretch. COMPELLING EXPLANATION Simon Hamilton, 35, admitted in Canterbury (England) Crown Court in April that he took furtive “upskirt” photos of women standing in public places and even acknowledged having an extensive collection, but he denied that the pictures gave him sexual gratification. Rather, he said, he was merely a habitual collector of things and spent his time cataloguing the photos rather than looking at them. “It was the sort of gratification of a job well done,” he explained, telling the judge that he came from a long family line of collectors. Besides, Hamilton said, his upskirt days ended around 2001, when he decided to re-enter the practice of law and realized that upskirt photography was “no longer ... appropriate.” At press time, no verdict had been reported.

ADVENTURES WITH CASH REGISTERS The Oakland (Calif.) Tribune, reporting in March on recidivist-robber Eugene Rutledge, 21, found that employees at one Taco Bell were so accustomed to Rutledge’s robbing them that as soon as he appeared at the door, they would ritually open the cash register for him. And in Denver in April, a man tried to rob a Walgreen’s drugstore, but a clerk resisted and, during a scuffle, grabbed the first thing at his disposal to throw at the man, and it happened to be the store’s cash drawer. The robber eagerly gathered up the loose money, fled, and according to police is still at large.

I

t was about three years ago. The bar was dark and nearly empty, except for a couple of old guys mumbling to each other over a watered-down Scotch and a Silver Bullet. The bartender stood under a television set, drying a glass and looking at no one in particular.

In another corner, an imposing, brown-skinned man sat hunched over his beer can, his thick, wiry black hair held back in a ponytail. His posture begged anonymity, yet his very presence was magnetic. Weary and guarded, he had a solemn expression and barely peeked out under the cap shading his eyes.

And then a group of boisterous club-goers ambled inside.

“Oh my God, it’s Willie K!” exclaimed a young blonde in a fetching, off-the-shoulder turquoise ensemble and dangling gold earrings. She turned to grab her male companion.

“Wow! I just saw you on stage!” the man told Willie.

“You were awesome!”

Willie smiled wanly and stood. He shook the hand of the effusive young man, and then the girl. Noticing his audience was quickly expanding, Willie seemed to force himself to stand taller and smile wider. He took in the praise, nodding and saying “thank you” before he turned and sat back down at the bar.

Then he sighed.

Aside from performing with his dad, Willie also played in various bands throughout school—R&B, salsa, country, Hawaiian—no genre was left untapped. After school, he headed the popular Westside rock band Da Buggahs.

But he started getting restless. He felt that the local music scene was uninspired. He wanted to be a better musician and do something different than the same stuff he was hearing on the radio and seeing on TV. So in 1987 he went to San Francisco.

“Everything people see about my entertainment, it’s all from San Francisco,” he told me. “San Francisco has uniqueness, individuality. What you desire to put out and have people feel passion, you do.”

When he came back to Maui a few years later, his popularity skyrocketed with the release of his first solo album, Kahaiali’i. In 1992, it received four Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, including Album of the Year, Male Vocalist, Most Promising Artist and Contemporary Album.

A couple of record label changes and a growing disillusionment with the local music industry led him to focus on producing other artists, rather than record another album of his own. Along came Amy Gilliom. The first album from their resultant alliance garnered Gilliom three Hoku Awards.

And their subsequent success as a duo is legendary.

Who Is Willie K? And why do some call him the only active volcano on Maui?

By Samantha Campos I told this story to Willie recently, at his home in Lahaina. It was only one of many thousands of experiences such a highly regarded musician as the infamous Uncle Willie K would face everyday in his nearly 40 years of entertaining.

“You gotta take all the bad shit with the good,”Willie said.“I knew I was gonna have to face that when I got into it. Most local musicians aren’t prepared for that.”

And it’s true; most local musicians do not have to deal with the amount of fame and pressure to succeed as a man of Willie’s talent has—or especially, the amount of pressure facing a young boy of Willie’s talent.

Willie comes from an honored family of musicians. His father was the famed Hawaiian jazz guitarist Manu Kahaiali’i. His mother was a singer.There were nine boys and four girls in the family.

“I come from a family of so many kids,”said Willie.“When it came time to eat, you better eat or you’ll get the crusts of bread.”

All the Kahaiali’i kids were encouraged to pursue music, although Willie was immediately singled out as having more than his share of the talent gene pool.At eight, he began performing with his father, who kept a close watch and strict reign on Willie’s burgeoning musicianship.

“It’s always pressure when it comes to family,” said Willie. “Any kind of family business. I never had a chance to think [outside of] that.”

SINGING THE PRAISES One professional witness to Willie’s prodigious talent is Jim Linkner, a prolific producer of Hawaiian music and Keali’i Reichel’s business partner. Among other things, he recorded Gilliom and Willie’s live album on tour.

“Willie would listen to something, run it through one or two times and boom! He’s got it,” said Linkner. “I’ve made 300 albums but I can’t think of any better musician than him. He does anything: slack key, jazz, blues, ‘ukulele—he can sing Italian arias, to rock and roll. He is boundless.”

It’s this commitment to diversity that has earned Willie both praise and skepticism. As a Hawaiian artist, infusing rock and other genres, and playing national tours opening for acts like Santana, has opened doors for other musicians from Hawai’i—but at the same time, it’s also put off some in the Hawaiian music community who may consider Willie’s eclecticism as too radical.

He was constantly battling record execs wanting to pigeonhole his style or people who needed him to be the “Hawaiian Jimi Hendrix.” But he’s a musical chameleon; he can do and play anything he wants.

“If you let Willie be Willie, and let him do what he does best,” said Ed Carson,Willie’s manager and longtime friend, “he’ll do his best.”

This may explain the attraction of Willie’s unbelievably long-standing Hapa’s gig. For the past 11 years, Willie has consistently packed the dance floor of this Kihei venue.

And no one, especially nightclub owner Gus Hoeft, wants to see that change anytime soon.

“He’s the number one entertainer in the state,” said Hoeft. “There’s no comparison. He’s a one-man band, an awesome singer, hilarious. I think he should be one of the Top Five things to do in Hawai’i.”

“Hapa’s has always been good to me,” said Willie. “I’m able to express myself in a different light.They don’t care if I wrote a 9/11 song or a love song. Maybe the stage is small but it doesn’t mean your understanding should be.

Open up—open your mind. People stay closed-in, they have nothing to blame but themselves.”

“Hi honey,” said Willie.“You do your homework?”

She mumbled something, then disappeared.Then Willie told me that he took her with him to Europe and she fell in love with Italy.

“It was basically an educational thing,” said Willie.“I’m giving her everything my parents gave me.”

THE FLAMES OF FAME Willie’s musical curiosity and experimentation is partly what draws people to him. And there’s no definitely no denying his onstage charisma. But offstage,Willie struggles to be a private man. The public attention he gets can be daunting. It’s no accident some have called him the only active volcano on Maui.

“People always want a piece of him,” said Carson.

“Whether it’s an interview or to talk story, they always want something more than the performance. People can get too personal; people feel like they know you. They yank on his hair. Just last week, he bent over and this woman started patting him on the butt. People get so overwhelmed by his music, they just get caught up in the moment and lose their minds, literally.

“He has this gift and knows not to keep it to himself, so he has to share a little bit of himself, too. It’s a balancing act. And it extends to his playing golf, walking down the street—not just here. In Tahiti, a woman asked him to sign her baby! Wherever we go, there are very few degrees of separation now between Willie and the rest of the world.

No matter where we are, chances are there’s someone who’s heard his music.”

It can be tough, but Willie says he knows it’s part of the life he chose.

“If you take this move to being a public figure,” said Willie, “you better be prepared for the outcome of both sides. Otherwise, it’s gonna slap you hard. Look at Tiger Woods—he can’t even go into a public bathroom. The reason I’m an ‘asshole’ is so I can go to a public restroom.

People say,‘Oh, there’s Willie K, no bother him.’”

“Musicians are treated differently,” said Carson. “That’s the beauty and the mystery of music—more so than with a movie star or an athlete—you take it with you through your life. ‘That was the song I did this or that to.’ It’s a bookmark on a certain part of your life, and people hold that dear.”

LEARNING TO STAND Willie has been practicing martial arts for 25 years. He holds a black belt, and has been running a martial arts school for kids for several years in Lahaina.

“I’m basically teaching people how to not be insecure with themselves,” he said.“[Some kids] want to fight but I say you need to know how to stand first—how to breathe.”

Lately Willie’s been busy with other projects, so he’s set up conditioning equipment at his house for the kids gearing up for the international karate competition, Festival of the Kings. The event happens in July at the Lahaina Civic Center, and is veered toward teaching kids camaraderie and teamwork.

While I talked to him one day,some of these kids stopped by.Willie greeted each one with a beaming smile.

“These guys are the superstars of my school,” he said.

As the kids set up to work out, he pointed out the various equipment strewn throughout his backyard, including an intimidating wall of bricks that yes, he can break with his bare hands. But he also told me the most effective martial arts move: walking away (or running, as the case may be) from violent confrontation.

“I had the crap beat out of me and had to learn the right answer,” he said.“I’m a lot more mellow these days.”

Willie doesn’t drink or smoke anymore. He says he loves to watch people get drunk and crazy but cannot stand it when someone lies to him about it.

“You can never tell an ex-drug addict when you’re not high,” he said.

“When these kids first started with me, they were

persistent,” he added.“They would wait outside my house in the morning.They would train every day from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every summer.”

Willie began watching the kids training in his backyard.

“He’s a gentle soul,” he said of one, then pointed to another.“They both are.”

But he balked when I suggested that, perhaps, he’s one, too.

BAREFOOT NATIVES Willie is currently undergoing training of his own.

About a year and a half ago, right after his country tour with Amy Gilliom in which her brother Eric had joined, Willie had an idea.

“I had fun playing with Eric so I called and said, ‘Hey, you wanna do an album?’”said Willie.“’Let’s do a Hawaiian album together.”

The duo formed the Barefoot Natives.They spent about a year in the studio. They released the album this past week; next month, they’ll hit the West Coast, from San Diego to Oregon, for a couple weeks.

“I cannot handle the mainland for more than a month,” said Willie.

After the tour, the Barefoot Natives have plans for more projects, including a TV show, movie and another album.

“I like the buzz it’s creating,” said Willie.

Just last week, the duo performed in Europe for concert promoter Marek Lieberberg’s 60th birthday. Gilliom and Willie fronted Billie Joel’s band, along with other heavy recording artists. But the boys from Hawai’i kept a game plan to do a righteous performance and represent.

“After that gig, we made a lot of friends,” said Willie.“We did what we set out to do.We let people know there’s a new sheriff on Maui and it’s the Barefoot Natives.”

Willie had just come back from Germany before he hopped back on a plane to go to Kauai, where he performed solo for an annual Humane Society Convention.The show was a hit and the Humane Society people want to book him for the next decade.

“It was huge—there were about 2,000 people—and I walked out and said, ‘Wow, you guys really like me!’” said Willie.“And I got a standing ovation just for saying that.”

At this point in the conversation, Willie’s 10-year-old daughter Lucetiana suddenly peeked her head through the window above us.

One way to relieve all the stress of his hectic life is golf.

Willie loves golf.If he could,he said he would play everyday.

“I’m a fiend, a groupie, an addict,” said Willie. “It’s a challenge, and it doesn’t take its toll on me physically—it’s mentally challenging. It’s like trying to solve a great big puzzle, to get that hole-in-one once in a while. I’m a lover of the game.”

He golfs mainly in Ka’anapali and Maui Lani, hasn’t yet golfed in Pukalani but has almost everywhere else on the island.

It’s not simply an idle pastime.When his father entered the oncology unit at Maui Memorial Medical Center,Willie met Karey Oura, who also had a cousin in the same unit.

When both family members passed, Willie and Oura agreed to incorporate his love of golf into a charity tournament for cancer.

Now in its fourth year, the Willie K. Charity Golf Tournament raises funds to support Maui Memorial’s oncology unit, as well as raise money for the treatment of cancer patients and families in crisis.

“Some families—when someone gets inflicted—have no money for rent, flights,” he said.“We’ve given so much money for research and still no cure—nothing concrete.

It’s important that this money is for patients.”

“Willie has a huge heart,” said Oura.“That gets missed a lot but he really is an asset to our community.”

“I enjoy doing what I do,”Willie said.“I have a beautiful home, a happy family, my wife and daughter. Everything’s all set—I need nothing else.”

That’s a lot. And yet, there was something missing from the collection of details I’d gathered about Willie’s life. I sensed an imbalance, perhaps a darker side he hadn’t spoken of, some skeletons left unrattled in the closet that would complete the cycle of growth and betterment that Willie has chosen to undertake.

I wondered if an abusive childhood or a past addiction to drugs and alcohol fueled his current quest to be a better father, an “uncle” to the community and a “local boy” with an active volcano of talent to unleash upon the world.

Didn’t most star musicians have pasts like that?

Either way, many people rightly admire and respect his beneficent deeds and extraordinary musicianship. But I still felt I was missing something. A quick call to Carson found me making the drive to Hapa’s late one Monday night, in an effort to catch Willie during a set break.

He was patient but pointedly evasive. There was stuff he didn’t wish to rehash. He didn’t consider it relevant anymore—it’d been discussed to death in past interviews.

Instead, he wanted to talk about the existence (or lack) of aloha spirit.

His passionate speech warmed me but I worried about finding the missing piece to my puzzle. It was now very late and Willie had to get back on stage so we said goodnight. Then Carson took me aside and tried to explain how layers of complexity make Willie so hard to define. He referred to the word “kaona,” which is most frequently used in describing the hidden meanings and subtle nuances—both light and dark—that give beauty to the poetry of Hawai’i.

I can’t think of a better word to describe Willie K.

The swirling cosmic dance of reaching for your Mediterranean olive mix while artfully maneuvering between a hippy dad pushing an infant toddler in a shopping cart and a pierced Surf Diva makes the food foraging just that much better.

I went by Hawaiian Moons again at 4 p.m. on a recent Wednesday and counted seven people at the tables. I saw several quarter-turn dip and swerve moves that looked a lot better than the nearby beachfront dance floors. But watch yourself, or it’s “Oops! Your organic fair-trade chocolate imported from the Brazilian rain forest just got in my freshly ground almond/tahini peanut butter!”

The salad portion of the buffet is well done with a combination of crunchy sprinkles of fresh veggies in rainbow colors: purple cabbage, green peppers, orange carrots, bright red beets. It looks like the food is just oozing with crispy, crunchy nutrient goodness. But it’s the little extras that make this salad

bar extra good. There are vegan croutons, a complete selection of nut and seed sprinkles, nine different dressings (try the Cardini’s Caesar, the original Caesar dressing) and some surprises like organic egg salad, tuna salad, dolmas, four different olive choices, organic homemade salsa, a to-die-for almond couscous and about 20 more items that add to this do-it yourself adventure.

The hot bar menu rotates daily. The carrot soup is exceptional. The teriyaki free-range turkey is also excellent, and the squeeze bottle of extra teriyaki sauce to moisten the meat is appreciated. The spinach feta puffs and the egg rolls both have a tendency to dry out on the steam table, so be a little wary.

With so many choices, trusting your senses will leave you well rewarded.

There are also usually a few Thai noodle dishes and a few miscellaneous Indian curries tossed in for good measure, but all in all, I’d say the salad bar trumps the hot bar. The cool thing is they let you mix and match your plate for the same price for both hot and cold items.

The price is a reasonable $6.29 by the pound. You can expect to pay $10 to $12 for a bountiful and satisfying lunch or dinner including a cold drink nabbed from their grocery aisle and maybe a little bit of that fair trade chocolate imported from the Brazilian rain forest.

If you think about it, it’s like simplifying the shopping: instead of going to the grocery store to buy all of the ingredients, they simplify the process by doing all of the prep work. With such a heavy rotation of daily specials, you can eat at this buffet and never get bored with the menu. MTW

After outgrowing its original home in the cozy Wailuku bookstore, the competition moves to the historic Iao Theater for the first time. That’s right, folks—competition! Randy Mills, who won the last poetry slam in April, says that while it’s less personal than 8 Mile-style rap battles, the competitions can be intense (perhaps due to the $100 cash prize). Admission is $10 (only $7 in advance or $5 with student/seniors I.D.), which is slightly more than a ticket to Tom Cruise’s latest clunker, only I guarantee this will be much more thought provoking and inspiring. And I imagine you’ll have a far better chance of not being distracted by high-schoolers’ cell phone conversations. Father Damien Live Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, 4 p.m. at St. John’s Church in Keokea [DRAMA] Father Damien, born Joseph De Veuster in Belgium in 1840, is probably the most important person in the history of Kalaupapa on Molokai.

Moving to the colony for Hansen’s Disease patients in 1873, Father Damien immediately set out to make life better for the people slowly and miserably dying there, both by providing person to person care and by lobbying the Hawaiian government for more money and assistance. After 12 years of living closely with the patients, Father Damien contracted Hansen’s Disease, which finally killed him in 1889. Now actor Vinnie Linares will bring Father Damien to life in his one-man drama Damien: The Leper Priest of Molokai. The show will benefit St. John’s Church. Tickets $15, $5 for students. X Marks the Spot The mutants battle over a cure The final chapter of the X-Men trilogy sees a seamless directorial changing of the guard from Bryan Singer’s beloved cinematic vision of the popular Marvel comic book to the capable hands of Brett Ratner (of the Rush Hour franchise). Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine leads the 16-primary-character-narrative in which a “cure” for mutancy gives birth to a war between Magneto’s (Ian McKellen) Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Charles Xavier’s (Patrick Stewart) school of mutants. It’s an energetic comic book movie with heart and just enough vague social commentary about conformity to balance its outrageous visual sequences of pure spectacle.

X-Men: The Last Stand

★★★★★ Rated PG-13/104 mins.

Screenwriter Zak Penn (X-2) does a commendable job of allotting meaningful screentime to the franchise’s numerous returning and newly appearing characters. Most fascinating is a computer-assisted flashback episode in which the 20-years younger, and more compatible, Charles Xavier and Magneto visit the home of a very young telepathic Jean Grey, the mutant child of an average American family.

The friendly chemistry between Stewart and McKellen as real-life friends of the Shakespearean stage comes across in the scene. Jean makes cars levitate outside of her suburban house and the two genial acting masters breathe in an air of relative calm before the narrative storm strikes. XMen co-creator Stan Lee makes a trademark cameo appearance in the

sequence as a worried neighbor watering his manicured lawn.

Compacted into the prologue is the introduction of Angel (Ben Foster), the mutant winged son of Warren Worthington II (Michael Murphy) the scientist who discovers how to change mutants into normal powerless human beings. In Angel’s flashback, his father beats down a bathroom door where the young boy has bloodied himself by chopping off the wings that grow from his back.

Although Angel’s limited bookend presence in the film seems scant considering the visual appeal of a winged man able to fly, Angel determines a crisis decision regarding the mutant cure that carries larger implications for the story.

Brett Ratner benefits from the unity of style and tone that Bryan Singer established in the first two films, and even more so from the returning actors who match their characters’ previous levels of intensity. In a scene that contrasts audience expectations of life-and-death in the mutant world, Cyclops (James Marsden) rides his motorcycle to Alkali Lake where Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) sacrificed her life in X-2.

The potentially melancholic moment is shattered when Jean is reborn from the lake as “Dark Phoenix,” a character so dangerous that she is a threat to her fellow X-Men, the world at large, and most immediately the man in front of her who loves her.

X-Men: The Last Stand is a comic book movie that crams in a stunning number of characters while still managing to map out significant emotional underpinnings. It’s a blow-out party for fans of the comic books to revel in seeing characters like “Colossus” (Daniel Cudmore), “Multiple Man” (Eric Dane), and “Callisto” (Dania Ramirez) show up in the context of grand battles. Even for audiences unfamiliar with the comic books, or the previous two movies, it still stands up as a great popcorn movie. MTW

(AP) RV - (PG) - Adventure, Comedy, Family - Robin Williams plays Bob, a work obsessed guy that tricks his family into giving up their dream vacation to Hawaii in exchange for a road trip in an RV. Bob only does this to please his boss, but his family doesn’t know that. Confusion, slap-stick comedy and the eventual realization that family is whats really important is inevitable. 98 min. (HK) THE SENTINEL - (PG 13) - Thriller - Think In the Line of Fire meets The Fugitive with a little 24 thrown in, kinda. Michael Douglas plays a veteran Secret Service agent wrongly accused of conspiring the kill the President and Keifer Sutherland plays his protégé charged with bringing him—the wrongfully accused agent, not the President—down, I think. Last Call Tha Alkaholiks farewell tour hits Hawai’i’s bars In the early ‘90s, hip-hop took a decisive turn west. Led by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, rap in the West Coast got funky and hard, fast. A rivalry developed between East and West Coasts, and music became a deadly business.

The Alkaholiks Friday, 10 p.m. at Paradice Bluz Thankfully, Tha Alkaholiks were around to ease up that tension. Formed by DJ ESwift (Eric Brooks), and MC’s J-Ro (James Robinson) and Tash (Rico Smith), Tha Liks found their niche in the sounds of upbeat hedonism with a hardcore edge that earned them a large underground following in alternative hip-hop.

Their debut album, 21 & Over (1993) featured quintessential party jams like “I Got It Bad Y’All,” “Likwit” and “Only When I’m Drunk.” Tha Liks then toured with KRSOne, Ice Cube and Too Short, released a few more albums, teamed up with mega-hit producers The Neptunes and Rockwilder, and formed an extended family called “the Likwit Crew,” which featured players like Xzibit, Defari, King Tee and Lootpack.

This year, Tha Liks have released Firewater, a back-to-the-roots thirst-quencher for their fans with tracks like “Party Ya Ass Off,” “Turn It Up” and “Chaos.” Also, the group has announced that it’s their last album, with extensive touring to follow.

I talked to E-Swift by phone recently from his home in L.A. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Hi E! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you—this week’s been kinda crazy…

E-SWIFT: Yeah, it’s been kinda crazy for me, too. I just moved to Vegas.

Raise a glass, y’all Whoa. Why’d you do that? Tash is out there right? Or is it J-Ro? main island—I get confused?

No, J-Ro’s in Sweden. Tash has been hanging out there for a couple years. The prices of houses out here are ridiculous. Plus, I just wanted a change. I’m real spontaneous. Once I get an idea in my head, I do it.

Oh, well, Oahu is the city island. Hawai’i is the big island. But you know, Maui’s the best.

Yeah, I haven’t been there yet.

Yeah, you don’t seem like you have a problem with change, what with all this touring you’re doing.

Our official tour is in August. Right now we’re pretty much in and out of different places—we’re hitting Hawai’i, Australia, Japan and we’re hooking up some spots in the U.S.

How much time do you get here? Have you been to Hawai’i before?

We’re going to a different island every day. We’ll hang out in the daytime and do our shows at night. I’ve been to Hawai’i a few times but it’s been awhile. The last time I was there was two years ago for vacation. It was a week in Honolulu. What’s the

So have you played any shows since releasing Firewater earlier this year?

We’ve played in Canada and a few in the states. The response has been great for it. Of course, we mix it up with older stuff. But you know, we’re known for touring and our live stage shows.

Are you getting sad that this is the big farewell tour? C’mon, E—are you gonna cry or what?

Actually, it’s giving me a chance to do some other stuff. In a group, you’re always on call—it’s hard to do outside projects. But we’re always doing shows. This tour’s gonna last us a while. MTW

It Was a Dark and Brainstormy Night…

If it reads easy, that’s because it’s writ hard. – Ernest Hemingway It happens a lot more than I care to admit. I mean, sure, I’ve got the freedom to write about whatever I want. But I do have other things to do here, people! Like sometimes how I might have to go pick up lunch. For the entire office! And that Pignataro is no simple orderer, either.

Sometimes they make me field a call about whether this is the Maui paper that does that word scramble thing—or is it that other one? And do I have the number please?

More often I’m responding to emails regarding the enlargement of certain parts which I do not possess, the depositing of certain international funds into my severely depleted bank account or the “new addition to the family” announcement from my mom about her latest Rottweiler, Mademoiselle Petit Eschezeaux—75 pounds, three ounces.

What’s my point here again, exactly? Oh yeah! That all this glamorous work invariably leads to bouts of indecision as to what is appropriate subject matter for this week’s column.

Given my propensity to procrastinate—or what I tell my editor is my highly valuable trait as a journalist to “work better under pressure”—I am often scrambling to come up with some semblance of a good idea waaaaay past deadline. This means that Tuesday night generally has me pacing the weird stubby brown carpet of the editorial floor outside of Pignataro’s office, as puffs of smoke billow from the cigar dangling out of his stern, frowning mouth into the hallway.

“Hey, what the hell are you doing out there, kid?” he will ask me with a cantankerous growl. “You’re making me nervous.”

“Um, er, nothing, sir… everything’s cool here,” I will stammer. “I just, uh, I just kinda don’t know what to write for the column this week.”

“Is that so? Hmm…” And then he will lean back in his swivel chair, his naturally furrowed brow softening just a little, sighing as he stretches his arms back behind his head.

“Have a seat, Campos.”

And thus begins the 367th retelling of the time he was a spry journalist at the Modjeska Tribune or some such venerable Orange County paper, and his boss used to sit him in his office and make him handwrite the preamble to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics over and over again until he came up with an idea. A good one, that is. Oh, and then he’d make him walk to the store to get coffee. In the snow. For 23 miles!

At this point, Pignataro will chuckle to himself. And I know this is my cue to take action.

“I’ve got it, boss!” I’ll exclaim with vigor. “I know exactly what to write! You’ll have it on your desk by morning!”

“And not a minute later, Campos,” he’ll say gruffly.

Despite my outward acquiescence, on this particular Tuesday I was feeling a little rebellious. So I called a buddy and headed straight to the bar. Besides, one thing I’ve learned in my few hard years as a reporter is that it’s impossible to write with a dry mouth.

Upon arriving at the watering hole, I thought I’d struck gold when the first conversation I overheard was of an older gentleman talking about the plastic-lined trash cans full of green slime he drank at some party in college.

“And at the end, everybody was slipping and sliding!” he was saying. But then he got a call on his cell and stepped outside.

I caught another potential lead from our bubbly waitress. She wanted to know why, when she recently went to the Tedeschi Winery, they told her the wine made from pineapple was still called “wine.”

“Shouldn’t it be called something else?” she asked. “Like, ‘Hoopla’ or something?”

My companion had other ideas. They varied from the documentation of the effects of wearing an adult-sized duck costume to researching the popular act of “noodling”— holding onto a log and plunging it into the river to have catfish attach themselves to your arms—in the Midwest.

But ultimately, it was the cute “Curveball” cocktail waitress who saved the day. She told us of a former boss from the South who used to charm her with such endearments as: “Peckerwood, you’re about as useful as a pork chop in a synagogue!” and “Peckerwood, you’re about as useful as a screen door on a submarine!”

Yeah… it kinda made me long for the smell of a cheap cigar and a long-winded story.
