Love the website, nicely done.

Interesting article on the bus system on Maui that reflects what I’ve heard about it from those who use it (“Easy Rider, May 3, 2007). Now it needs to get bigger and more comprehensive but this at least is a good start.

I do have a couple of problems with the article, though. The plural of bus is buses, not busses, though both words make it through a spellchecker just fine because busses is a synonym for kisses. Substituting the latter for the former in the article makes it an even more interesting read though is somewhat less informative.

Also, the offhand comment about “whale families” is interesting if not entirely accurate unless you count single parent households as a family and these days there is increasing resistance to that. Male humpbacks come to Maui for the same reason that single male humans often come to Maui, to get laid without retaining any responsibility for any resulting offspring.

They don’t much care about the young’uns. So when you see large groups of whales “breaching and spouting” what you’re seeing is one harried female humpback being chased by a group of horny males intent on beating the crap out of each other in an attempt to impress her.

Think Junior High School combined with closing time at any bar and you get the picture. I understand you have folks on your staff who are intimately familiar with bars and they can probably elaborate further on that.

Anyway, love the website, got the gist of the article and I guess these days, given the state of the media in this country, that counts as a pretty good job. I’d rather The New York Times and the Washington Post misspell a few words and get the story straight than the other way around, there might be less chaos in the world right now and we’d all be better informed.

You can imagine how bothered she was when my daughter turned out winning the vote. After all, she had just graduated.

But, back to me. It’s true that last year I decided I wanted the recognition for my business. So whenever my customers would say, “that was our absolute BEST meal so far” I would ask them if they were willing to put that in writing. Then during two whole weeks of the vote I took off to South America and realized that I probably wasn’t going to win.

When the results came out, I was so surprised that I had actually won a category that was better than the one that my customers were filling out! It is common knowledge that whenever there is a vote that the one with the most supporters usually wins. Sanjaya is a perfect example.

While a lot of people thought he was a horrible performer, there were others that loved him.

But the thing I am wondering is why does this bother you so much? Is it because your business has never won? Or is it because you have NO business of your own to be proud of?

Oh, and the other thing I wanted to say is that after I won I actually invited the staff at Maui Time to come have lunch.

My treat. If they were so about all the “kickbacks” you referred to, why didn’t any of them show up? Not only did they not come for a free lunch, but they also didn’t try to sell me advertising. What ya got to say ‘bout dat one, brah?

Road No Longer Traveled Has Hotel Hana Maui closed the easiest access road to Hamoa Beach?

Year after year travel and tourist publications have voted Hamoa Beach in Hana one of the top beaches in the world. But it’s not the easiest place to get to. In fact, the only public access to the beach is through Hotel Hana Maui property.

While the pubic can freely access the beach by walking down a long, steep, cracked flight of concrete stairs, most people—especially the disabled and elderly—simply ask one of the hotel’s beach attendants to unlock a gate on the right side of the beach. That allows them to drive their cars down to the beach, unload and they drive back up to the road to find parking.

But on May 5 I received a call from Hana resident Tony De Jetley saying that easy access was closed to the public. On that day, De Jetley told me, a

hotel beach attendant had denied him use of this access. When De Jetley asked why, he said the attendant told him Hotel Hana Maui employees had a meeting earlier in the week in which they were told that no one, save hotel vehicles, would be allowed entry through the drive.

“When I asked the beach attendant if that meant that even people who could not physically make it down the steep staircase, he told me, ‘no one,’” De Jetley said. “I had him call Manny [Arriaga], who was the on-duty property manager and when he got off the phone the message he had was the same: No one was to be granted driving access through the locked gate.”

There is no way that someone in a wheelchair could possibly access Hamoa Beach without the cooperation of the hotel staff.

get to the beach using the still available but steep and winding staircase. Many of the steps are cracked, and it doesn’t seem the hotel—which owns it—has done much to maintain it.

So on May 6, my husband and I packed our baby in the car and went to the Hotel Hana. I walked down to the hotel’s “activity center” and asked if I could get through the gate to unload my car.

“No,” the attendant said. He added that it was hotel policy to not allow anyone access through the gate.

Even if I was handicapped?

“Well, if you were disabled or really needed the help, I’d open the gate,” he said.

So the hotel’s policy is now that the access is closed to the public, except for disabled people? Actually, it’s hard to say.

Hotel Hana Maui General Manager Douglas Chang, who is also chairman of the Hawai`i Tourism Authority, didn’t return repeated phone calls requesting comment for this story. But Valerie Ng, Chang’s executive assistant, told me there hasn’t been any change in hotel policy concerning the beach access road.

“Our policy is to allow access to people wishing to unload their vehicles, or access to those that can’t make it down the stairs,” Ng

That would seem to be the end of it—just got to plan your trip to the beach to coincide with hotel beach attendant hours—except for the fact that another hotel employee who preferred to remain anonymous told me that it’s always been hotel policy to block public access through the gate.

“It’s private property and we would be liable,” the employee said.

And what are disabled people supposed to do?

“We’re not supposed to let anyone down through there, but I guess that it would be a good thing to do,” the employee said. “But it wouldn’t be anything we’d want to advertise.”

Since Hotel Hana Maui’s policy concerning public access to Hamoa Beach seems illdefined, it’s hard to say whether it’s in compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in state and local government services, public accommodations, employment, transportation and telecommunications. 2050 Vision Seeing Hawai`i’s future in the crystal ball A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is just drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.

–Proverb Two community meetings last week invited Maui’s citizens to share their ideas and vision for the Hawai`i 2050 Sustainability Task Force. While some of us have a hard time planning for next week or next month, others among us may relish the opportunity to help envision a future that will hopefully improve on our present day existence. About 130 people took part in the process.

The exercise is not new. Strategic plans and long range plans abound in businesses, organizations and government agencies. Even now the Maui County General Plan Advisory Committee is preparing to revise guidelines that may (or may not) direct our growth and development over the next two decades.

In 2003, Focus Maui Nui asked 1,700 residents, more than one percent of our population, to discuss their values and priorities. Five key strategies for action evolved from that process.

“Overwhelmingly, participants in Focus Maui Nui expressed a sense of optimism that the islands could become a model for clean, sustainable

living and a place where every child could grow to lead a successful and productive life amongst family on the islands,” touts the Focus Maui Nui website.

But to what extent do our utopian plans and dreams actually become tangible? As one veteran community activist said of the Hawai`i 2050 meetings, “I am concerned that we will end up with a report that spends more time on a shelf than being implemented.”

In 2005 the state Legislature created the Hawai`i 2050 Sustainability Task Force, and supports it with $1.4 million in funding. The stated goal is to involve as many people as possible in the state’s long-range planning process and to provide input by the end of this year for legislative review in the 2008 session. The final Hawai`i 2050 plan will complement, rather than replace, existing planning laws and processes.

Hawai`i 2050 had a unique kickoff event last August at the Dole Cannery building in Honolulu. More than 500 people attended, with at least 50 each from the Big Island, Kauai and Maui.

To help shake participants out of their traditional thinking and beliefs, students from the Hawai`i Research Center for Future Studies—under the direction of pioneer futurist, Jim Dator—acted out four possible future scenarios.

One scenario portrayed Hawai`i under a military dictatorship, with a full-blooded Hawaiian designated as king. Tourism and

LC Watch 15 Days For a long time, I’ve wondered if the Maui County Liquor Control Adjudication Board values big hotel chains over small businesses. At its May 3 hearing, the board provided evidence that I might be right.

On that day, the board slapped a 15-day liquor license suspension on Lahaina’s Paradice Bluz.

After the hearing owner Chris Mahon said the sanction would cost him at least $30,000 in lost revenues. He even speculated that the losses might force him to close his three-year-old club.

The LC’s action stems from an incident last August in which a man named David F. Castles had dinner and a couple drinks at the nowdefunct Zuihao in Lahaina, then walked with a buddy to Paradice Bluz. There, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Hanano alleged, Castles consumed five gin and waters and

consumerism are remembered as past extravagances, and money and credit have vanished. Bartering of goods and labor provides the economy’s foundation.

A second alternative is something of an economic success story, with tourism the main economic driver. Governance is made up of representatives from the multinational corporations that run the tourist industry. Most food is genetically modified and nuclear plants on all islands provide

At about 12:40 on the morning of Aug. 11, Castles and his pal left Paradice Bluz. After convincing his buddy that he could drive, Castles drove alone to Kihei. He got as far as South Kihei Road, where he lost control of the car and ran into a tree. Castles died at the scene. An autopsy found no drugs in his system and a blood alcohol content of 0.370.

Paradice Bluz (Disclosure: they buy advertising in this paper) had no prior convictions for overservice, and Mahon said he accepted a plea agreement in which he’d plead no contest in exchange for facing just two counts—serving alcohol to someone under the influence and knowingly permitting a drunk to remain on the premises. Mahon said later that he had no idea he was facing a possible license suspension (typical first time convictions for overservice bring $2,000 fines) and that if he had known, he would have brought in his attorney and pleaded not guilty.

But that doesn’t matter now. Board members seemed most interested in Mahon’s explanation that while he took Castle’s death very seriously,

ample electricity and desalinized water to support four million residents.

A third future scenario depicted local self-sufficiency, resulting from the end of cheap and abundant energy, sea-level rise, global economic collapse and pandemics.

There’s no more mass tourism. Fertility has been reduced and in-migration is strictly controlled. Values derived largely from Hawaiian culture govern all life and social interaction.

The fourth imagined future differed greatly from the others, in that the definition of “humans” had changed profoundly.

Technological revolutions led to artificial intelligence and cyborg modification of brain and body. Wars, injustice, oppression and environmental devastation are things of the past. The old spaceship launch pad at South Point, Hawai`i is now a major distribution center, teleporting goods across the globe and to off-Earth settlements.

While none of the four scenarios is much like the present, the seeds for each can be found in the present. The point of the exercise was to challenge existing assumptions and to help people clarify and dream of the future they want to face, and want next generations to live in.

he wasn’t doing anything really different now in terms of training his staff to watch for drunks.

“You have to do something more than what you’re doing,” board member John Urachi told Mahon. “Obviously there’s a crack in your system.”

Mahon still has to work out with the LC when the suspension will take place. But outside the hearing room after Mahon left, I couldn’t help but think about the LC’s ruling back in 2004 in the infamous Hyatt Regency case.

That’s when the Hyatt–a corporate giant worth billions of dollars–faced 25 counts of repeatedly serving minors who partied throughout the Ka`anapali hotel for days, giving alcohol to their friends, including an 18-year-old New Jersey cheerleader who later died after she fell out of their ninth floor room.

After a mere 10-minute deliberation, the Adjudication Board levied $50,000 in fines on the hotel giant but did not suspend its liquor license.

This bill does not immediately address the issues we have.”

THURSDAY, May 3 Look who’s back in the news—it’s the Akaka Bill! Today’s Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports that the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee—why it has jurisdiction over Native Hawaiians, the article doesn’t say—has passed the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act—and sent it on to the full House. Now don’t get your hopes up, people. Democrats may control both houses of Congress, but old George W. Bush still reigns supreme over on Pennsylvania Avenue. And he doesn’t like the Akaka Bill because, according to a posting on today’s Honolulu Advertiser website, he says it will lead to “secession,” “balkanization” and “racially isolated government.” Now, as is usually the case with statements from the Bush Administration, this is all wrong. And I don’t mean wrong as in factually incorrect, but wrong in that everything about the assertions is absolute,

The Honolulu papers are buzzing with news that the U.S. Navy’s new $2.5 billion nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Hawaii is getting commissioned this weekend. Governor Linda Lingle even flew all the way to Groton, Connecticut to speak at the ceremony. Am I the only one who sees astonishing hypocrisy in all this?

I mean, the U.S. military conquered Hawai`i in the late 19th century. And now that very same military will go off and perhaps conquer new lands in the name of these islands? Doesn’t that strike anyone as just a tad ironic? Of course, the navy has in the recent past commissioned submarines named Honolulu and Kamehameha—the latter carried nuclear missiles—so I suppose it’s a little late now to be worrying about this. Though I have to say that usually staid papers like the Honolulu Advertiser have been carried away by the hype, apparently for the sole reason that the boat is named after our state. For instance, that paper’s own writers posted this little line yesterday on the paper’s website: “Hawaii will ensure the United States maintains undersea dominance, in both deep and shallow waters, well into this century.” Undersea dominance! Hurray! Take that, sperm whales!

We’ll show you, giant squids! Your days are numbered, um, volcanic vent-hugging tube worms! You think you rule the murky depths? Not any more, you don’t!

Now if only we could somehow convince Al Qaeda to invest billions of dollars in ultra-quiet nuclear-powered subs, then we could defeat them, too!

His guest was Kaleikoa Ka`eo, an Hawaiian Studies instructor at Maui Community College, and they talked a bit about the Akaka Bill—you know, its failings, empty promises, hollow dreams, etc. Saying he supports the bill, Uncle Charlie nonetheless explained that he really liked the bill’s original wording years ago—the one that allowed Native Hawaiians to challenge the U.S. military’s holding of so much Hawaiian land, for instance—but now the bill has been “watered down” by many “scary” amendments attached to it by Republicans. He said backers should hold hearings on every island so Hawaiians can testify about their support—or lack thereof. He said the bill does nothing to address issues like ceded lands. Of course, Ka`eo completely agreed. Now let’s think about this a moment: Democratic U.S. Senators Daniel Akaka and Daniel Inouye both support the bill. So does Republican Governor Lingle. They say it will help the Hawaiian people. So I ask again: why do well-respected Hawaiians like Kanahele, Ka`eo and Uncle Charlie keep saying the bill will do nothing of the sort?

Why is that the U.S. reserves the right to act in our own narrow “national interests,” but it’s not “good behavior” if other nations defy our wishes and act in their own national interests? I’m asking questions that don’t have any answers again, aren’t I?

MONDAY, May 7 Shifting away from matters of war and minority rights for the moment, it’s time to talk about something far, far more important: food. We’ve been seeing a lot of advertising—TV, radio, bumper stickers—telling us to buy locally grown produce, and according to today’s Advertiser, it’s working. “Hawai`i’s production of fresh fruits and vegetables has roughly doubled since the 1960’s,” the paper reports. And this is great, wonderful, stupendous news, except for one small caveat: “[T]he amount of imported fresh produce has more than tripled in the same period.” Nooooo! Once again, we’ve been stung by that soulless cur known as the global economy! Will the madness—and by madness, I mean low mainland land and labor costs—ever end? But there is hope on the horizon—the Advertiser reports that state Agricultural Department is busy printing up “Hawai`i Seal of Quality” stickers for those local growers who don’t mind paying a half cent per use to tell buyers their fruits and veggies came from right here. Hurray! The stickers will save us!

Haven’t heard much from genetically modified organism (GMO)/herbicide manufacturer Monsanto lately, but they benefit this week from news that University of Hawai`i researchers have expanded their GMO work on “bananas, tomatoes, petunias and lettuce,” according to the Apr. 30 Honolulu Advertiser. Genetically modified, disease-resistant petunias? My God, man, do you think the world is ready for them? Can you imagine what would happen if something went wrong and a super petunia began multiplying? It’s simply too frightening to contemplate.

But I digress: opposition to GMOs around the world has been steadily growing for years—focused intently on the fact that scientists still can’t be certain of the long-term health effects caused by tinkering with DNA—but if UH is charging headlong in making disease-resistant fruits and vegetables, then Monsanto and its various super corn and soybean seeds can sit back and relax.

TERRIBLE TWOS Oh Hawaiian Telcom—will the fun never end? “We’re turning the corner,” HT CEO Mike Ruley said in the May 1 Advertiser. “We’re investing literally hundreds of millions—not millions—but hundreds of millions in technologies… to generate new levels of customer service and a new level of customer experience.” Turning a corner? Is he serious? Carlyle Group took over the company two years ago—that’s a hell of a corner to be turning, Mike—and customer service has been pretty crappy ever since. In fact, the Advertiser couldn’t resist putting a graph of HT complaints alongside their story: in the 15 months since January 2006 (data for March and April of this year isn’t available), Hawaiian Telcom has failed to meet its goal of responding to 85 percent of customer complaints within 20 seconds for 14 of those months. Basically, the company barely met the goal that first month, and has been struggling to return ever since. Things were so monumentally fouled up in May 2006 that customer service reps responded to a mere eight percent of complaints within 20 seconds. But Ruley says all that is a thing of the past.

And when the Advertiser stops printing graphs of your complaint response times, we’ll believe it. MTW

SAFETY FIRST! Britain’s Health and Safety agency headquarters reportedly posted signs in various locations in the building warning workers not to attempt to move chairs and tables by themselves, but to call for porters (for which 48 hours’ notice was required). In April, London’s Daily Mail reported, not surprisingly, that the agency’s workplace injury record was very low. And the head teacher at Bramhall High School in Stockport, England, decreed recently that students, who wear neckties to class, must use clip-on ties, in part because of the risk of choking.

CREME DE LA WEIRD In March, police in Trenton, N.J., arrested four men in separate incidents and learned that they fancy themselves as “diplomats” from the Abannaki Indigenous Nation and claim immunity from the laws of the “so-called planet Earth” (and Mars and Venus, too). One allegedly possessed an unidentified “controlled substance,” and the others were driving cars with made-up “diplomat” tags. The four showed no ostensible ties to the Abenaki Indigenous Nation, a tribe that first appeared in North America in the 17th century and which is still present in the northeastern U.S.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Anthony Perone, 20, pleaded guilty in March in Connecticut in connection with two stalking letters he admitted mailing to a woman he had fallen for in the third grade but who apparently had spurned him. The rambling, incoherent letters explicitly threatened death, and Perone had intended to send them anonymously. But he lived with his mother and had given each envelope to her to mail, and, unknown to him, she had thoughtfully added his name and address before posting them. MTW

course we’re on, and then connect our present to that future?

Albert Einstein once said, “I never think of the future—it comes soon enough.” But he is better known for his quote, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

With that in mind, it may be useful to look at the support structure for our long-range planning processes.

The Maui Economic Development Board guides Focus Maui Nui, which in turn organized and hosted the Hawai`i 2050 meetings on Maui. The Maui 2050 Task Force representatives include the Chamber of Commerce President, its past president, the president of a real estate development firm and the Maui County Planning Director.

The construct appears weighted on the side of economic interests. We’ve heard so many times that “our environment is our economy” that it’s hard to understand why there isn’t at least one environmental representative on the 25-member task force.

After all, protecting the natural environment ranked second on the Focus Maui Nui priority list, right after improving education.

In any case, why don’t we have a better education system, protected and restored natural resources, abundant alternative energy, vibrant local agricultural opportunities and universal health care? It seems that we always run up against roadblocks formed from the existing economic power structure and the government bureaucracy dutifully supporting it.

Our federal government spends tax dollars in obscene amounts on a grossly obese military budget under the guise of national security, but at the expense of addressing widespread domestic issues.

Locally, we continue to fatten the coffers of tourism, our strongest industry. The Hawai`i Tourism Authority (HTA), which has an annual budget nearing $60 million, now apportions a

few million dollars worth of grants to Cultural Heritage Tourism and EcoTourism endeavors.

But that came about only after a 2002 Supreme Court challenge by the Hawai`i Sierra Club. The environmental group maintained that the HTA’s wish to increase tourism two percent every year would broadly impact local resources, and should require an Environmental Impact Statement, triggered by the use of public funds. The court ultimately ruled that Sierra Club did not have legal standing to challenge, but the issues saw wide discussion and today environmental groups have a seat at the table at HTA in the form of a Natural Resources Advisory Group.

On Maui, the County Council’s annual budget review can be marked by missives from Kihei community activist and volunteer Buck Joiner, lambasting the County’s awarding of nearly $4 million (and $3.4 million from the state) to the Maui Visitors Bureau.

“You will hear sustainability preached statewide, at Focus Maui Nui, by the mayor and council members,” says Joiner.

“Maui needs a dairy, an egg farm and a pineapple operation. Did the county provide money to keep any in operation? No. Instead it gives $4 million to the richest, most successful industry on Maui, the exact opposite of sustainability.”

The Maui County budget is complete and ready for the mayor’s signature. For the first time ever, it has topped the half billion-dollar mark. How much of that is allocated for education and environmental protection, the top two Focus Maui Nui priorities?

Not enough.

There are many definitions of sustainability. One is that sustainability enables islanders to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising future generations, while living within the limits of the natural environment.

Sustainable communities, environment, economies and quality of life won’t just happen. They need our collective input and spirit to correct the state’s heavy reliance on imported food, energy and dollars. Of course, she is also the president of the Rotary Club of Kapolei and the co-founder of the Well of Hope Foundation, which is raising money to dig a well in a remote Ethiopian village. And her global consciousness extends to her music as well—Mendez once fronted a Latin-jazz group called Worldwide Groove, which seems to have influenced her long-awaited, jazzy Latin-flavored album Back to the Islands. —2007

3) LEDWARD KA`APANA GRANDMASTER OF THE SLACK KEY GUITAR Hawai`i’s legendary master of the slack key guitar and `ukulele, Ledward Ka`apana garnered a Grammy nomination for Grandmaster of the Slack Key Guitar in 2006.

Most people would say it’s about time—Ka`apana’s been in the biz for more than 40 years. He’s also an accomplished player of autoharp, bass, steel guitar, as well as baritone and falsetto singing, which he utilizes on about half of the songs on this critically acclaimed recording.

5) BRITTNI PAIVA BRITTNI Called the “slack key supergirl” after winning a Na Hoku Hanohano “Most Promising Artist Award” in 2005 for her debut recording, Brittni Paiva released a second CD, which was nominated for two Hokus the next year.

‘Hamburgers, Shakes and Fries’ Exactly what you’d expect at a place called Peggy Sue’s I’m always searching for a good burger. So when I caught wind of Peggy Sue’s in Kihei, I figured it was worth checking out. “Hamburgers, Shakes and Fries,” the sign said. There seemed to be little room for error.

So one night I loaded up the girlfriend and we gave Peggy Sue’s a try.

It was tucked away in the Azeka Mauka Plaza—so small I probably would’ve missed it if I weren’t actually looking for it.

Inside the hazy little diner smoke from the grill hung in the air so heavily I could barely see the back door (which was not that far away). But it smelled really good.

As the cloud began to subside, I could see the pastel pink and blue vinyl booths lining the right wall. A chrome-trimmed counter spread the length of the left. Black-framed pictures of James Dean and the like

adorned the walls, and there was an antique jukebox cranking out ‘50’s pop.

All the booths were taken, so we pulled up two stools at the counter and sat facing the grill. A waitress wearing a frilly pink-clad waitress uniform took our drink order. I felt like I was living out a scene from Grease.

They don’t serve alcohol, so I reluctantly ordered a Coke, and when she

turned to go get it I wondered if I should have instead said soda pop. I ended up ordering “The King” from the top of the menu. “A legend in its own time… our juicy king sized burger,” the description read.

I thought it best to keep things simple, but when pressed I asked the waitress to bring me a vanilla milkshake. It only seemed right.

When she left I walked over to the juke, with the intent of playing “Johnny B. Goode” (I’ve seen Back to the Future way too many times). But the Chuck Berry classic spun up before I even dropped my quarter in the machine. It was weird, so I played “Mr. Sandman” instead.

The milkshake was on the counter when I returned to my seat. I couldn’t remember the last time I actually had a milkshake, or what makes a good milk-

shake, but this one was excellent.

My burger arrived a few minutes later. I must admit I was a little surprised to see The King on a whole-wheat bun. I’m not sure if this is standard practice, but if I want to be healthy I’ll go to Down to Earth.

Still, my suspicions evaporated once I took a bite. Not thick and juicy, it was good in that flattened-out-patty sort of way. The fries were well above par.

When the check came, I was amazed at the low prices. Then I realized that it was because they didn’t serve alcohol and I hadn’t run up a huge bar tab like I normally do.

Could that have been why I was able to get such a solid grasp on the place?

Perhaps. But at least I was able to get a good burger at a reasonable price and still drive home on my own. MTW

[SCOTTISH DANCE MUSIC] Cowbell? Pshaw! There needs to be more fiddle in music these days. So it’s a good thing one of Scotland’s premier musical ambassadors, Alasdair Fraser, will be leading the way, with help from cellist Natalie Haas, as the two get you to tap your toes and raise your skirts with glee… whoa, that’s a little too high, buddy. [REGGAE] “I do not sniff the coke, I only smoke the sensimilla...” Yeah, me too. Pato Banton was one of my favorite reggae stars back in the day. UK reggae. How quaint is that? Banton has toured around with Sting, Peter Gabriel, UB40 and more. In 2000, after he was nominated fro a Grammy for the album, Life is a Miracle, he decided to take a break from touring and did something cool by starting up a musical program certified by British colleges for underprivledged or at-risk youth. So yeah, it was at least seven years since you’ve seen Pato whether you want to admit it or not.

In all, activists estimate as many as 13,200 new housing units could go in. Sequel Dud The plague that is 28 Weeks Later Audiences hoping to experience similar thrills to director Danny Boyle’s original virus-infection shocker 28 Days Later would do better to re-watch that flawed film rather than endure this committeeproduced, half-hearted follow-up from newbie writer/director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (Intacto). Seven months have past since the last Rage Virus victim died of starvation in

The U.S. Army controls the empty city’s quarantined district where adolescent siblings Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton) are reunited with their father Don (Robert Carlyle) after his narrow escape from a marauding band of diseased zombies that ostensibly took the life of the children’s mother Alice (Catherine McCormack).

Nevertheless, of the 500 survivors populating Britain, Alice endures undetected thanks to a genetic immunity that may provide an antibody against the insidious Rage microbe.

swipes at social satire and a wayward emphasis on feeble child characters contribute to the film’s tedious pacing. This isn’t just a bad movie. It’s a cut-and-paste example of how movie sequels are predictably inferior to their ancestors.

There’s a notable lack of urgent discovery in the beginning minutes of 28 Weeks Later despite its thundering goth metal musical score. Fresnadillo makes no attempt at matching the fast-twitch blast of graphic energy that exploded from the first film’s opening sequence where contaminated lab monkeys broke free of their cages to wreck unthinkable havoc.

Here, a group of civilians hide quietly around a dinner table inside a boarded-up rural farmhouse. Don and Alice retreat to an upstairs bedroom when viral automatons invade the dark crevices of the house to bite and spew blood on the uninfected civilians. Don jumps out of a second story window, abandoning his wife in the process, before escaping in a motorboat whose blades chew at the tainted flesh of his spastic attackers.

The lead-up seems to promise an omega man perspective of one man’s individual attempt to escape an inevitable doom. Instead the plot veers off into a militarized London overseen

by U.S. Army commander General Stone (Idris Elba) where Don’s children join their traumatized father in a refugee compound that seems more like an internment camp.

Never mind that the children effortlessly skip out of the Army’s “secure zone” to gather possessions from their home where

they discover their mother alive if unwell.

The movie doesn’t care about believability or cohesion.

The most visually arresting moment comes in the form of an exceptionally gory climatic scene that seems lifted from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse where a helicopter pilot uses his chopper blades in a literal sense to make minced meat of an approaching group of zombies on the ground. It’s an unfortunate parallel that points out the lesser quality of 28 Weeks Later as compared to Grindhouse where at least there’s an atmosphere of cinematic pleasure present.

A turning point finally comes when Sergeant Doyle (Jeremy Renner) disobeys General Stone’s order to fire on civilians after the quarantine is broken. Doyle leads a small pack of survivors away from the American soldiers and zombies who coincidentally line up on the same side of the law, or lack thereof.

Of course, by this time it doesn’t matter who is a villain or if there is any hope for humanity. The audience is simply being baited for a third continuation of more of the same. Judging from this psychology, humankind really is staring into an abysmal future. Enjoy the decline. MTW

Yes, Bic Runga is a person. She’s one of the top-selling recording artists in New Zealand, which is to say she’s big in Australia and the UK—not so much here but that’s just because we’re dumb. Runga in person is as lovely and disarming as her uniquely sweet voice; born to a Chinese Malaysian lounge singer and a Maori soldier, she began recording songs when she was four. In her early teens she already knew how to play drums, guitar, keyboards and, impressively, jazz. Her first solo album, Drive, debuted at number one in the New Zealand charts—as has this, her sec-

ond album. Runga has written, arranged and produced all the songs on Beautiful Collision, a haunting, seductive immensely likeable album of soft, jazzy intelligent pop. —Sony Music 2002

This CD pays homage to Hanuman the monkey god, or Hanuman Chalisa, with over an hour of rhythmic recitation from “Sri Ram Chalisa,” “Hallelujah Chalisa,” “Good Ole Chalisa” and so on. There’s a bonus CD, too, of “Hanuman Chalisa” sung slow and then phrase by phrase so that those of us new to the practice can adapt to the Hindu words and pronunciations a bit easier. On the whole, I find the incantations and rhythms deeply calming. This is yet another of KD’s charismatic efforts, of course, to make spirituality accessible and—not only “catchy”—but also, with me at least, it’s catching on. —Gemini Sun Records 2007

1963) specialized in deeply soulful, dramatic, sometimes gloomy ballads. She is the progenitor of French pop, cabaret and torch songs and this is a double-disc collection of her hits. One disc features her live performance at Carnegie Hall in ’57 and includes her seminal hit, “La Vie en Rose.” The other includes songs from Paris Olympia. Her story is classic—you can’t make this shit up: She was born in poverty and abandoned by her parents, left with her grandmother who ran a brothel, became blind for a short time then deaf before having her senses “miraculously” and mysteriously restored, then joined her father in his acrobatic street performances before branching out on her own as a street singer, falling in love at age 16 and birthing a child who died in infancy. A few years later, a nightclub owner discovered Piaf, only to get murdered shortly thereafter. Officials suspected Piaf of being an accessory, but nothing stuck. It wasn’t long before Piaf floated in famous circles, became very successful and even assisted the French Resistance on occasion. Ah, but the tragedy doesn’t end there!

She eventually fell in love with the boxer Marcel Cerdan, who died in a plane crash.

A few years later she developed a morphine addiction after a car accident. She died of cancer at the age of 47. But thankfully, her music swoons on. —Delta Entertainment Corp. 2001

NINE INCH NAILS “YEAR ZERO” It was Tuesday morning of April 17 and I was pacing around outside of Borders in the Maui Marketplace waiting for an apparently late manager to let me inside. It was about three minutes past nine, and I was getting impatient.

Borders was the only place on the island that I knew for sure was getting the new Nine Inch Nails album, Year Zero, on the release date. I had stopped by the store a few days earlier, on Saturday, to check. Some guy in a faded Grateful Dead t-shirt typed it in on the computer and assured me they were going to be receiving 40 copies on Tuesday.

So there I was, standing in front of the dark store checking my watch with about half a dozen old ladies. Finally a manager arrived and let us in. I rushed over to the music section, found the row of newly sorted and freshly sealed NIN albums glistening in the fluorescent light.

I picked it up, studied it. “16 Noisy New Songs” the sticker on the front promised. I smiled to myself and headed up to the counter.

So after work, after the sun went down, I carefully loaded Year Zero into my Alpine deck, turned the knob as far as the JBL’s would allow without distorting and pointed the car west on Highway 30.

Within 12 seconds I knew the CD was good. The steady drum-heavy beat of the intro track, “HYPERPOWER!” wasted no time in setting the tone for what was to come, and I quickly realized the all-caps and exclamation point were there for a reason. The sound kept building and building as one layer was added after another, and I sat there, waiting, waiting… gripping the steering wheel tighter and tighter… then suddenly I heard what seemed to be machine gun fire… people screaming—was that the sound of bombs dropping??—Jesus Christ, it was intense, and I began to wonder if I was gonna rip the steering wheel off the column. Then, just like that, the track faded out after just a minute and a half, and new drumbeat set in. Before I could question the abrupt transition a calm and collected Trent Reznor cuts it and says: “Down on your knees you’ll be left behind, this is the beginning…” and I had no choice but to nod along to the beat. “You wait your turn you’ll be last in line… this is the beginning… get out of the way cuz I’m getting mine, this is the beginning…”

Well, I know I’m getting mine, I thought. That was for sure. I was starting to sweat with excitement. Approximately three minutes later the tempo picked up for “Survivalism,” reminding me once again about how Reznor is the best screamer on the planet. However, “Survivalism” was soon overshadowed by the following track “Good Soldier,” which is the clear-cut best song on the CD. “Good Soldier” is very different, at least by NIN standards, but I dug it.

Everything just flows so smoothly. The way the lyrics roll along with the music, the way it rhymes. It’s mellow. It’s groovy. Trent isn’t screaming but instead just quietly singing, “How can this be real? I can barely feel… anymore…” It all syncs up so perfectly. I love it.

The other track that really stood out was “Capital G,” which has these brief dramatic pauses that seem to heighten everything about the song. Very edgy, very cool.

Overall, my impression throughout the first listen of the album was that the tracks were all their own separate entity. They didn’t really seem to flow from one to the next as the songs did in, say, The Fragile or Downward Spiral. But after the second and third time around, I could hear the progression from one track to the next. There was definitely a central driving force, a point. The album has a very militant feel to it, the way the words rattle off along with the ever-present drumbeat—at times I wasn’t sure if I should be jumping around wildly in a mosh pit or marching around formally in some sort of a protest rally. On the whole, Year Zero sounds like a cross between With Teeth and Pretty Hate Machine, if I had to compare it to something.

But ultimately what’s important is that Year Zero delivered as promised: 16 Noisy New Songs… hey, I couldn’t be happier. MTW

I have an unemployed neighbor who can be seen at all hours restlessly strolling around with his dog or lounging in the sun smoking a joint. -Walt Whitman, from “Song of the Open Road” Before I left the parents in Palm Springs and set off on my solo venture, I made a list of taquerias I wanted to visit on my way up Pacific Coast Highway—one in Santa Barbara, another in Morro Bay—as well as the locations of comic book stores, Good Vibrations and a few of my favorite bars in each neighborhood in San Francisco, in case my brain became too road-addled to recollect by the time I got there.

Once on the road and past Los Angeles, like so many times before, I marveled at the multi-billion dollar homes set precariously atop the constantly sliding, seaside cliffs of Malibu, the endless stream of jogging blondes with dogs and the requisite film crew taking over the parking lot of a beach park with their cruise-ship sized trailers.

The reason I was choosing to take this particular coastline highway that’s roughly twice as long as the alternate inland freeways is that every once in a while on Maui, I crave a good road trip. I yearn to drive for hours at a time, passing taco stands and quirky towns and dubious storefronts on the way to someplace else—somewhere I will not have to circle back to, as I so often do on our beloved Valley Isle, on one of my frequent restless “holoholo” outings.

What I am searching for, I don’t quite know. I think I just enjoy the searching. And I have been feeling lately, on Maui, that I know all the possibilities of what I will find before I get to wherever I am going. For a lot of people there is comfort in that. There is simplicity and beauty. But I guess what I have been missing is the thrill of discovery.

What’s great about road trips is that no matter what route you plan, or where your ultimate destination is, you’re bound to be struck by a lot of stuff you didn’t know about on the side of the road—if you keep your eyes open. And you give yourself enough time to dawdle, which I didn’t. So no roadside taco stands for me. Point deducted.

Because I vastly underrated the time it would take to make my crawl up the coast— about nine hours as opposed to what I thought would be five—I sped through a great number of towns I would’ve liked to “discover.” Out of the corner of my eye I caught glimpses of ocean but mostly I kept my focus on the crazy, serpentine two-lane highway that was not unlike the road to Hana, only double the traffic and three times as long.

I reached Big Sur by twilight—my favorite time of day in California—and pulled my gas-guzzling, mid-size SUV (sorry, Mr. Parsons!) into a small nook under a canopy of towering redwoods. The frenzy of freeway travel left me as soon as I checked into Deetjen’s Inn and walked through those magnificent redwoods on the way to my cozy cabin alongside a creek.

I was already late for my reservation at the property’s restaurant but I felt time stop when I walked through the door of my temporary abode—I doubt little has changed in the décor of this room since the 1930’s but I could see no reason why it should. Briefly, breathlessly, I appraised its rustic, wooden interior and big, fluffy bed before I dashed out the door to dinner.

There’s a lot I like to do alone but dining solo makes me a little queasy. Bringing along reading material usually distracts me from the stares and whispers of nearby diners but this time I was content to admire the fireplace-lit, antique-filled room, and gazed happily out slightly fogged up windows covered in vines and overtaken by freesia and a red rose bush. I was definitely someplace else…

I did my best not to listen in on the conversation at the table next to me but you can imagine my horror/pride at being subjected to such rich irony.

And speaking of rich, I decided to start dinner with a chocolat pot de crème, which pleased Bob, my server, greatly. As everyone finished up, Bob joined me at my table for a couple more glasses of wine, and we compared notes between the characters and social climates of our respective hometowns/island.

Once back in my cabin, I poured over a bunch of journals in the nightstand by the bed, left behind by the inn for guests to write in, telling of the various circumstances that led them to this very cabin at Deetjen’s. There were honeymoons and anniversaries, and the same couples coming back with new babies, or widowers returning to a place they had once enjoyed with their loved ones, and even some solo travelers, on a quest for something they hadn’t quite grasped yet but were hopeful they were on the right path.

As I read through 20 years of people’s most intimate thoughts and feelings, I realized that we are all very connected in some basic way. And with that stack of journals beside me I drifted asleep, with a belly full of good wine and food, a head full of good conversation, and a heart full of the feeling that it’s good to be away from home sometimes.
