LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES

Irish director-playwright Paul Walker’s production of Ladies & Gents opened for a March run in New York City 29 blocks north of Broadway in a public restroom. According to an Associated Press report, the entire play takes place among the porcelain in a bathroom in Central Park, portraying “the seedy underside of 1950s Dublin,” with the audience of 25 standing beside rows of stalls, near “spiders, foul odors and puddles of questionable origin.” Walker proudly admits that he wanted to take the audience “out of their comfort zone” to create “a different energy.” Actor John O’Callaghan recalled that rehearsals were especially difficult: “One man actually came in and had a pee right in front of us.”

Ajinbayo Akinsiku’s heavily abridged version of the Bible, in the Japanese graphic “manga” style, was recently published in the United States with the goal of making Jesus more “accessible” to a younger, religion-indifferent generation. Quirky, illustration-rich manga presents biblical philosophy as action scenes using contemporary dialogue, according to a February New York Times review. In one example, Akinsiku (who hopes someday to become an Anglican priest) has Noah taking census on the Ark: “That’s 11,344 animals? Aargh! I’ve lost count again. I’m going to have to start from scratch!”

CULTURAL DIVERSITY In October, the government of Singapore, anxious about the city’s declining birth rate, began teaching high school polytechnic students how to flirt. Said Isabel, 18: “My teacher said if a guy looks into my eyes for more than five seconds, it could mean that he is attracted to me, and I stand a chance,” according to a March Reuters dispatch. The course includes “love song analysis” and how to chat online.

Officials in the Shivpuri district of India’s Madhya Pradesh state, needing a promising program to slow the country’s still-booming birth rate, announced in March that men who volunteer for vasectomies will be rewarded with certificates that speed them through the ordinarily slow line to obtain gun permits. Said an administrator, the loss, through vasectomy, of a “perceived notion of manliness” would be offset “with a bigger symbol of manliness.”

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Registered sex offender Jason Lee, 28, was arrested in Cincinnati in February and charged with several counts of deception for his seemingly benevolent acts of posting bond for two female strangers who had been arrested. Later, according to police, he had demanded sex and drugs from the women as payback, and a prosecutor said Lee had trolled for names of arrested women on the Web site of the Clerk of the Court.

WASN’T THIS A PAUL SIMON SONG? Anthony Raspolic reported a break-in in the wee hours of Jan. 1 in his apartment in Durant, Okla. He told police that he was in bed with his girlfriend, but got up and left the room, and by the time he returned, someone had taken his place. The man scurried out of the bed, stole Raspolic’s wallet and fled in his Ford Explorer.

Plantation Politics

The Commissioner Who Once Drank Too Much

The ABCs of A&B They are too much vested here. They have too many thousands of acres. -County Council Chair G. Riki Hokama t’s uncommon in regional governance that one corporate landowner wields as much political influence as that enjoyed by the company begun nearly 150 years ago by Maui sugar planters Samuel T. Alexander and Henry P. Baldwin. One of Hawai‘i’s notorious “Big Five” sugar plantation corporations of the last century, Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. remains powerful today, having diversified into ocean transportation (Matson Navigation) and property development and management. While other Big Five corporate holdings, including C. Brewer, Amfac and Theo Davies have largely been bought out or sold off, A&B still retains 90,000 acres statewide (69,000 on Maui). Equally important, they control the water necessary to make those acres profitable. East Maui Irrigation (EMI), a subsidiary of A&B, supplies from 160 to 450 million gallons per day of surface water for sugar cultivation and processing, with a small portion treated for the Upcountry domestic water supply. The most significant diversion in Hawai‘i, 75 percent of the water comes from state-ceded lands, with EMI paying less than one cent per thousand gallons of water. In recent months, contested case hearings over water tenure on Maui have challenged the century-old stream diversion systems for agricultural usage. Lawyers from Earthjustice, representing Hui O Na Wai Eha and Maui Tomorrow Foundation, addressed the state Commission for Water Resource Management over returning stream flows to four major watercourses in the central Maui portion of the West Maui Mountains. Yet Mayor Charmaine Tavares has announced that a major component of seeking new water source development is a proposed nine million gallon surface water treatment plant, to be constructed on A&B land outside Wailuku, with A&B receiving half the allocation. According to Stan Kuriyama, A&B Properties, Inc.’s chief executive officer, the Waiale Treatment Facility would provide a supply of water for the 179-acre expansion of Maui

How’s this for irony: in the summer of 2005, James Takeshi Viela— president of the Wailuku-based insurance company Kage & Viela and the newest member of the Maui County Liquor Commission— pled no contest to one charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, according to the Hawai‘i criminal justice database.

The Liquor Commission is an allvolunteer, nine-member panel that decides who gets liquor licenses in Maui County. The mayor nominates new members, who are then subject to approval by the County Council, and serve five-year terms. The criminal justice database indicates that Viela was arrested for DUI on Mar. 1, 2005. On April 28, 2005, he pled no contest to the charge.

A&B sees dollar signs here

Business Park, Phase II in Kahului, which faces second and final reading for its approval on Friday, April 18. The change in zoning from agricultural to urban usage will move the project—worth hundreds of millions of dollars—forward. County Council members were content to approve the project at first reading with promises of A&B’s “contributions” of 70 acres of land for affordable housing, a community center, park and the possible relocation of the Kahului wastewater treatment facility. The County Department of Planning’s Long Range Division required no such contributions when it issued recommendations for the General Plan Advisory Committee’s review of future urban growth boundaries and planned growth areas. The two largest new growth areas— 524 acres at the Waiale/Waiko Road area and 947 acres at Kihei Mauka, north of the Piilani Highway—were high on A&B’s wish list, and their inclusion in the new General Plan should bring about jubilation in their corporate boardroom. &B, Inc. has come a long way since 1869, when Sam Alexander and Henry P. Baldwin purchased their first 12 acres of land in Central Maui. The following year they bought another 559 acres,

establishing their own plantation. During the Civil War, sugar prices rose dramatically, and they were among many Hawai‘i entrepreneurs who saw dollar signs in the rich volcanic soil. They undertook a gigantic engineering project to bring water from the rain forest see POLITICS, page 11

He was fined $300 (as well as additional other court costs and fees) and had his drivers license suspended for 90 days, though for the latter 60 of those days driving to and from work was allowed. The database shows Viela paid all fines and fees and complied with all the court’s sanctions. Viela, who did not respond to three calls asking for comment on this story, previously served on the LC Board of Adjudication from 2000 to 2004. His application form also indicates that he’s a member of the Lions Club of Honolulu, the Maui Chamber of Commerce and the Maui Contractors Association. It’s unknown whether the County Council or Mayor Charmaine Tavares knew (or cared) about Viela’s DUI when she nominated him to the Liquor Commission. There is no space on the official application form for prior criminal convictions. Marian Feenstra, Mayor Tavares’ executive assistant who handles commission appointments, did not respond to a call for comment.

ehbrah@mauitime.com Brah, what is the deal with you? After all this time, I can’t believe you’re still thinking about that chick. Seriously—she does not care about you. Not even a little. In fact, she’s never really cared for you at all. If she did, she would have called you more than once a year, responded to your email and—during those rare times when you did speak to each other—actually asked questions like “How are you doing?” and “Is there anything I can do?” Instead, she always sang the same song, about how much she cared for you, how only you understood her, etc.—all as she’s flirting with other guys, going out with other guys, sleeping with other guys…When are you going to learn that she’s just not someone you need to care about? At first when I heard that she’s finally going to leave the island, I thought that now you’d straighten up, but after listening to you the other night, I’m not so sure anymore.

COCONUT WIRELESS THE WEEK IN REVIEW

WEDNESDAY, Apr. 9 Well, the truth finally came out. Thanks to today’s Honolulu StarBulletin, we know now why we had to give Hawai`i Superferry, Inc. $140 million loan guarantees, call an “special session” of the state Legislature to grant special permission to the company to ignore environmental laws and let them cut in line at the state Public Utilities Commission in late 2007 to get permission to run discount fares: lettuce. Think I’m joking? “While there is a passenger niche, I still think the cargo niche is the most important one for the ferry,” Bank of Hawai`i chief economist Paul Brewbaker told the paper. See, according to data included in the story, the Superferry hasn’t really been carrying a lot of passengers (from Feb. 1-13, when she went into dry dock, the Alakai carried just 1,717 people—a pittance, considering the ship is supposed to carry 866 passengers). This means HSF officials need another reason to keep the ship afloat, and undercutting local shippers like Young Brothers by hauling crops between Oahu and Maui seems to fit the bill. Of course, Brewbaker also told the Star-Bulletin that the “reliability of service will be a critical determinant of their success.” Given all the weeks the Superferry spent in dry dock or just tied up in Honolulu Harbor because the weather was too nasty, I’d say the company has a while to go.

THURSDAY, Apr. 10 The U.S. Senate’s Commerce,

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO ANTHONY@MAUITIME.COM

Science and Transportation Committee held a hearing today on Hawai‘i’s lovely experience with the commercial airlines. One of those testifying was our own U.S. Congresswoman Mazie Hirono (D, 2nd District). Here’s part of her testimony, which, as you’ll see, is as close to an outright call for re-regulation of commercial airlines you’re going to get from a sitting congressional representative: “Faced with the loss of jobs caused by Aloha’s passenger operations, the danger this closure brings to our state economy, and the precarious financial situation faced by virtually all of our nation’s airlines, I am frustrated by the lack of apparent solutions. I know that some will say that the market will correct the situation, but how can we expect businesses to plan for the tremendous increases in fuel costs we have faced in the past year? How can we make sure that there is fair competition? What can we do to protect the thousands of consumers who are affected when an airline like Aloha or ATA abruptly stops flying, not to mention the recent groundings of flights for safety inspections, including the grounding of 900 American Airline flights (about 40 percent of all its flights) today? The very complex nature of the industry and the high standard of safety expected and required lead me to question the wisdom of leaving so much in the airline industry to the vagaries of the free market system.”

FRIDAY, Apr. 11 Sneezing. Trust me—you don’t want to know more.

SATURDAY, Apr. 12 Don’t know if you noticed, but there was a tiny story in today’s Maui News headlined “Boil water notice cancelled.” According to the piece, the county’s Department of Water Supply (DWS) has officially cancelled the warning they sent out (don’t feel bad if you never heard it in the first place) to all Central and South Maui residents to start boiling all their drinking water because a 24-inch pipe broke in Happy Valley. Now DWS workers ordered the boil water notice cancelled not because they fixed the pipe, but because they didn’t own it in the first place. Now I know that county workers in all departments are under a lot of pressure. The economy is slowing, visitor traffic is down and residents are getting nervous about development and infrastructure. But seriously—at first glance, the county water department couldn’t tell its own pipe from a, well, hole in the ground? For some reason, that scares me more than a boil water warning.

SUNDAY, Apr. 13 Today the Honolulu Advertiser tells us that sending a chief executive officer packing requires a whole lot more money than

Things like this apparently still mystify the county

it used to. In the story “Hawaii CEOs average $2.3M in pay,” the paper finds it newsworthy that “[d]espite losing $5.8 million last year because of problem loans to California homebuilders, Central Pacific said it will pay CEO Clint Arnoldus $5 million, or more than five times his 2007 pay of $983,149, when he retires at year’s end.” Central Pacific giving Arnoldus a massive financial windfall even though the company has suffered under his leadership is certainly appalling, but it’s not news. CEO severance packages have been climbing for years, and don’t think for a moment that “effectiveness” or “results” has anything to do with it. “These large exit packages… may guarantee a specified level of compensation regardless of performance,” states the AFL-CIO’s Corporatewatch website. “When these packages become excessive, they may motivate executives to engage in a merger, even though it may not be in the interests of shareholders.” As for Arnoldus himself, he’s a piker: according to the AFL-CIO, in 2006 Henry McKinnell of Pfizer and Robert Nardelli of Home Depot unfurled golden parachutes worth $200 million each.

MONDAY, Apr. 14 And now an update on today’s Wailea 670 hearing from Maui Time reporter Kate Bradshaw: “A ruling is in sight on a lawsuit five Kihei residents brought against the county over perceived violations of state Sunshine Laws. Plaintiff attorney Lance Collins cited numerous precedents in his argument that the Maui County Council Land Use Committee

held several meetings concerning zoning changes for the Wailea 670/Honua‘ula project without proper notice or allowing public testimony. County attorney Mary Blaine Johnston responded that the county was “compliant” and allowed public comment as required. Judge Joseph Cardoza listened, then asked Collins to file “proposed findings and conclusions of law”–usually a good sign for the party asked to file. Of course, the county has also submitted that, so Cardoza’s stance is a bit ambiguous. In any case, Cardoza said he will rule on the case Monday, April 21 at a hearing in his courtroom at 8 a.m.”

TUESDAY, Apr. 15 Remember the county Planning Department’s war against transient vacation rentals (TVRs) that Mayor Charmaine Tavares started for, well, some strange reason? Well, last night County Councilman Mike Victorino sent out a release saying he’s proposing a resolution to force to leave them alone. “According to court records, TVR operators were directly told by the Department of Planning to not apply for permits based on the Administration’s prior policies,” Victorino said in a press release. “Now, under the Administration’s new policies, these same operators are subject to penalties and closure because they don’t have permits.” Get snarky news and commentary from Anthony Pignataro sent directly to you cell phone. MONSANTO RULES Anyone who’s even glanced at the May Vanity Fair story on Monsanto by investigative reporters Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele knows that the chemical giant is one immensely powerful corporation. Among the myriad brutal tactics employed by the company (which grows genetically modified corn on Maui) is the practice of putting the screws to little family farms suspected of “patent infringement”—namely, such unconscionable crimes as using leftover GMO seeds from this year’s harvest in next year’s, which Monsanto deems a crime, punishable by ruinous litigation. The story documents how Monsanto agents and investigators have spied on farmers and ruthlessly accosted them in public. According to Barlett and Steele, 2007 saw “112 such lawsuits, in 27 states.”

HT JUNK How do you get downgraded if you already have a junk-bond debt rating? Beats me, but the folks over at Carlyle Group-owned Hawaiian Telcom know: Moody’s Investor Service recently did exactly that. Their reasoning isn’t exactly a mystery, given HT’s loss of thousands of landline customers and a state PUC investigation for poor customer service. Such troubles “may have caused significant long-term damage to the company’s competitive position,” Moody’s said, according to the April 9 Honolulu Advertiser. The Advertiser story then explained that HT’s new rating is “six levels below investment-grade ratings.” MTW

ROBREPORT

hrough it all, plantation owners have had great influence with political leaders, always seeking to protect their business interests. The sugar planters’ need for a reciprocity treaty to sell their sugar factored heavily into the Bayonet Constitution of 1887, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy in 1893 and annexation by the U.S. in 1898. “During the pre-tourist years,” an online history of Hawai‘i states, “sugar planters and pineapple growers ran the islands with impunity, and prospered.” In recent years, A&B has kept its close association with government affairs, most apparent when a senior executive, Hannibal Tavares, won a 1979 special election for mayor. Hannibal is the father of current Mayor Charmaine Tavares. “Tavares’ win,” wrote Gavan Daws and George Cooper in Land and Power in Hawaii, “meant that for the first time on Maui since the start of the Democratic years, a man closely affiliated with the big Five was running the administration.” Their book also notes that Tavares fought hard for approval of the Maui Lani project in Central Maui, and endorsed A&B’s desire to retake lands from Maui Land & Pineapple, a long-time subsidiary that gained its independence in 1969. “This all meant that Maui now had a mayor who, together with A&B, was willing to defy the ILWU on major land issues in ways that, for three decades on Maui, would have been unthinkable,” wrote Daws and Cooper. A&B’s Political Action Committee is also a major campaign donor to politicians at the federal, state and county levels. Their influence is undeniable, extending even to appointments to prominent government boards and commissions. As recently as three years ago, A&B officials made headlines when news broke that they hosted five of the nine County Council members for dinner at the pricey North Shore eatery Mama’s Fish House. In 2002, Meredith Ching, A&B Inc. Vice President of Government and Community Relations, was appointed to the state Water Commission, above numerous objections. One of those objecting was William Tam, a Honolulu lawyer who wrote the state water code when he was the deputy attorney general assigned to the commission. He called the appointment an “irreconcilable conflict” that puts authorities in “very difficult circumstances.” Attorney Alan Murakami, Litigation Director with the Native Hawaiian Legal

T

Corporation (NHLC), said the state Commission for Water Resource Management’s record of stream protection “has been atrocious and needs serious reform.” Murakami was among a hundred citizens present at the Haiku Community Center last week, providing testimony to the water commission on a petition to return East Maui stream flows, now managed by A&B’s subsidiary, East Maui Irrigation. Taro farmers spoke of “cultural genocide,” expressing their anger and frustration at EMI’s water diversions from 33,000 acres of ceded state lands, and the commission’s foot-dragging without reaching a decision on water allocation and stream restoration, now having languished for seven years. Many Maui residents have also vented their displeasure with A&B’s Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar’s (HC&S) continuing practice of cane burning. Recently, a national environmental organization announced their upcoming lawsuit with the Environmental Protection Agency to challenge their rulemaking on the Clean Air Act to exempt air quality violations caused by agricultural burning.

he County Council is poised to give final approval to the 179-acre Kahului expansion, sure to increase the gridlock in the Dairy Road area despite claims that a new airport access road will funnel traffic elsewhere. They also added a condition that the zoning should not permit any mixture of residential units within the development. Two weeks earlier, in their approval of South Maui’s Wailea 670 project, they insisted that a third of affordable housing rental units be constructed in a light-industrial zoned site in North Kihei. Go figure. One thing you can figure is that Alexander & Baldwin Inc. will continue to be very prominent in designing the future of Maui. Anyone who recalls playing the board game Monopoly knows that acquiring the most properties is likely to put a player in better position to win. The question remains, is it a win-win? A&B Foundation provided $2.2 million to local charities in 2007, $480,000 of that on Maui. At the same time, A&B, Inc.’s CEO Allen Doane received cash compensations of $8.55 million, according to Forbes, with stock options pushing his income to $11.75 million. Now there’s a sweet deal. terrain of Haleakala’s north-facing slopes to the cane fields of Maui’s isthmus. In 1878, they finished the Hamakua ditch, capable of carrying 60 million gallons of water daily. They incorporated the Alexander and Baldwin partnership in 1883 under the name Paia Plantation. Soon after Alexander resigned as manager of the neighboring Haiku Sugar Company and moved to California, leaving Baldwin to manage both operations. By the end of the 19th century, A&B controlled the Paia and Haiku plantations, the Hawaiian Sugar Company and the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S), as well as its subsidiary, the Kahului Railroad Company. Soon after the company formed a new corporation, known as Alexander & Baldwin, Ltd., based in Honolulu. Soon after A&B went into the shipping business, mostly so it wouldn’t have to rely on others to move its sugar. In 1909, the company bought a stake in Matson Navigation Company. A&B continued to invest in Matson, until the shipping firm became a wholly owned subsidiary in 1969. Imported laborers were the backbone of the sugar plantations, as the population of native Hawaiians was dramatically reduced, largely due to introduced diseases. Labor disputes rocked sugar plantations in 1909, 1924 and 1946, a year after the International Longshore and Warehouse Union succeeded in organizing sugar workers. After World War II, A&B got into real estate development. That’s when Kahului Development Co., Ltd.—a subsidiary of HC&S— opened. “In response to the complaints of plantation employees regarding the inadequate housing available to them, Kahului Development built a new residential community, which was opened in 1950 and became known as Dream City,” state’s A&B’s official company history. “This development gradually evolved into the city of Kahului, Maui’s most populous community.” In the past few decades, A&B Properties has gradually converted plantation acreage to urban uses, while re-investing in Mainland commercial and retail ventures in several states. Property holdings throughout Hawai‘i, California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Washington and elsewhere total more than six million square feet of improved commercial properties.

A&B also partnered in the Central Maui Joint Venture, which supplied a 36-inch pipe of water from the ‘Iao aquifer in Central Maui to Kihei, Wailea and Makena in South Maui. They developed Wailea Resort in the 1970’s and 1980’s, sold it, then bought it back five years ago.

eno McCarthy doesn’t want to be portrayed as a hero. But as McCarthy and I sit at the pavilions down at Ho‘okipa on Sunday morning talking about “Fight for the Kids”–a charity Mixed Martial Arts event he is organizing to benefit the Neighborhood Place of Wailuku–I can’t help but think that, at least to the families that depend on the organization, he won’t have much say in the matter. As yet, no big names have signed on, though McCarthy wants the fight to take place at War Memorial Stadium. Some might see irony in the idea that a big MMA fight will help children and families, but for McCarthy, doing exactly that is perfectly in character.

G

haven’t been down to Ho‘okipa in nearly a decade and am surprised by the many familiar faces that stop in to slap McCarthy on the shoulder and peck me on the cheek as they walk past–especially on such a rainy, windy and choppy day as this. The surf scene was never one I’d been comfortable in, but McCarthy is a natural, apparently not only knowing every local surfer that frequents the area, but also liked and respected by them as well. McCarthy is a big dude, skin weathered from years in the sun and, as he freely admits, nights behind a bottle. He has shaggy, salt-water bleached hair, numerous tattoos, impressive shoulders and vibrant blue eyes that I don’t doubt for a second have broken more than a few female hearts. He’s what I’d call “local haole,” but I’m surprised when he says he first moved to the Islands as a young adult to pursue the dream of an “endless summer.” McCarthy is also more multi-layered than I expected, telling me about his past and how he found hope through the church and Christianity while simultaneously voicing anger, pain and love of fighting. McCarthy has always been a fighter–a scrapper really—but only recently became involved with the organized discipline of Mixed Martial Arts. At 21 he was arrested after head-butting a bouncer and fighting six cops. “It was my 21st birthday and I remember sitting in jail with $24,ooo bail on my head remembering what my grandmother had told me when I was a kid and she caught me stealing liquor out of her cabinet,” he said. “She told me I had a choice. Sitting there, it sunk in pretty hard and

I quit drinking for six years.” He stopped drinking cold turkey, seemingly an impossible feat–especially after he told me that he started drinking and doing drugs when he was nine. “I was really confused and had no guidance,” McCarthy said. “I didn’t have a father figure and the one that I did have when I was younger got all weird.” By weird, McCarthy is referring to the fact that he was molested numerous times by his mother’s boyfriend, beginning when he was just four years old. “I’m not ashamed of it,” he said. “It wasn’t me. I want kids to know that are out there, maybe their parents are beating them or someone’s touching them funny that they should have no shame. They can talk about it and if people want to say something, well, you know what they say, ‘Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they all stink.” As a dad to two young girls–Kayla, age eight, and Kailee, age nine–McCarthy wants to be the father that he didn’t have. “Becoming a father gave me a sense of responsibility,” he said. “I have two individuals that need my love and support. I also have a lot of respect for their mom Terina and all that she does for my kids. She’s an awesome mom.” McCarthy says fighting and violence are a part of him. He believes it to be primal. “I love to fight, but now I know that it’s better to fight in the ring than in a bar,” he said. “Being a haole, people want to fight me. It happens. Now I’m like, ‘You wanna fight? Okay, here’s my card.’” Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter and Maui boy Kendall Grove, who trained with McCarthy in Big Bear, California in September 2006, had nothing but praise for McCarthy. “Geno’s got awesome heart, trains hard,” he said. “He’s a cool haole bradduh that knows the

local ways. He’s a very spiritual person, loves Jesus Christ. He got me all fired up.” McCarthy attributes his desire to help others to the love shown to him through Pastor Dale Kreps of Pukalani Church of the Nazarene. “Pastor Dave gave me time and love that my own father didn’t, and it made me stop and say, ‘Who is this guy?’” McCarthy told me. In turn, McCarthy wants to give back to the community and specifically help kids. “It sounds kooky,” he said. “But I was working and I just got the message that I was supposed to give my money to the kids. And then I realized that I want to give even more than I have, so I thought to organize a fight where all of the proceeds would be given to someplace that does that.” “Fight for the Kids” was born. The first organization that that McCarthy contacted turned him down flat. “I guess cause it’s money coming from a violent sport? I don’t know,” he said, “But they wouldn’t touch it. Then I called Neighborhood Place and talked to [Founder/Executive Director] Venus [Rosete-Hill] and she was stoked on it.” appy Valley in Wailuku has long had a reputation for being one of the least happy places on the island. Of course, as a kid, I didn’t feel this. I spent time there–my dad had friends that lived in the area and Takamiya Market was a place my mom liked to shop because of the good prices and variety of food not found in the regular supermarket. But as I grew older, Happy Valley’s public housing, kids in the street and reputation for alcohol and drugs began to grow on me. When I discovered that The Neighborhood Place of Wailuku, a non-profit organiza-

tion dedicated “to build strong roots in the ‘ohana and in the community by promoting a safe and nurturing environment for children and families” was located in the heart of Happy Valley, I thought, “The area could use an organization developed to help families, but why in the hell would someone choose to set up shop in an area with such a bad rap?” On a recent Monday afternoon I made the short trip from my Market Street office down to The Neighborhood Place. Finding it was tricky—it’s located in an old two-story plantation-style house just off to the side of Takamiya. As soon as I stepped inside, Rosete-Hill greeted me with a hug. She introduced me to staff members that knew who I was by sight without ever formally meeting me before.

“I know your father, uncle, auntie,” Duke Sevilla, program coordinator, told me. “But you look like your mom. I worked with her at the jail.” Close, I told him. That was my mom’s sister that you worked with. Of course, it was 25 years ago that they must have worked together, but it felt good to be connected through childhood acquaintances and co-workers on a very small island. Rosete-Hill was born and raised on Maui. She began The Neighborhood Place four years ago. Today the organization helps more than 500 families. “What makes us different from some other organizations is that we are very culturally sensitive,” she told me while we sat in her warm and comforting office. “We’re different here. For example, there’s some great Mainland models for the work we do, but often they don’t work with local families. We’re a different culture. We live a different way. So we try to draw upon our innate local wisdom so that people can relate. We believe that it’s a person’s belief system that drives a person’s behavior. So we look at what they believe to be true about themselves and their family and work to build their confidence.” The Neighborhood Place uses traditional Hawaiian and multicultural values. Their guiding principles are both simple and powerful: ‘O ke aloha ke pili mai, (“Love is the thing that binds us”) and ‘O ke kuamo‘o ke kua‘e (“It is our genealogy that keeps us upright”). Rosete-Hill also noticeably resisted using the nowclichéd term “at-risk youth.” “We say ‘at-promise’ youth and families,” she said. “Every family at one time or another needs help. We’re not going to be judgmental. We want to help that family before an incident occurs and keep the family together.” According to Rosete-Hill, 80 percent of the families they have worked with are walk-ins who hear about the organization through word-of-mouth. “We don’t have a certain stigma attached to us,” she said. “You could come in here for any reason, kids, abuse, drugs. No one would know. We deal with everything.” he placement of The Neighborhood Place in the heart of Happy Valley was strategic. “Here we are in the middle of pubic housing,” Rosete-Hill said. “And not once have we been broken into or robbed. People started asking me if I was a product of public housing. I

didn’t even know. I had to ask my dad and come to find out, I guess I was. As a kid, you don’t know. Where you live is just a shell, there’s no reason that these kids here can’t have fun, healthy lifestyles. It’s not where you live but how you feel about yourself. One family at a time, we want to restore the cultural richness in this area.” Shane Kealoha, who participated in Kamalama–a parenting class put on by The Neighborhood Place—was enthusiastic about the organization. “I went in looking for a better me and found a better us,” he said. As for McCarthy, he hopes to have the support for “Fight for the Kids” by August or September. Many individuals and businesses in the Mixed Martial Arts community and beyond have offered to donate their time or services—HGA, Da Hui, Sanuk, Maui Jiu Jitsu, Kazuma, Wailuku Boxing Club, Da Kine and Papaya Naturay. “It would be so great if I could hand Venus a check for 20 or 30 grand,” McCarthy said, smiling. “I just want to help those kids.” For more info or to participate in “Fight for the Kids” please visit www.fightforthekids.org or email McCarthy at Irishskankin@hotmail.com. ast week I spent a rare girl’s night out in Lahaina with Dana, my former roommate. We checked out the Mai Tai Lounge, located on Front Street in the old Blu spot. After we got through the brightly lit jewelry store lined with cases of sparkling baubles that fronts the restaurant entrance, we found a very swanky atmosphere. There are two bars, one on the first floor and one on the second, but the downstairs bar was closed. So we headed straight up to the airy

lanai, where a few people were hanging out around candle-lit tables or lounging on low wicker couches at the edge of the deck. The Mai Tai Lounge is not only a waterfront restaurant; it actually sits over the

splashing waves. We perched on a couple of stools at the bar near the back, figuring we’d be closer to the cocktails. It pretty much goes without saying that the Mai Tai Lounge makes a good mai tai. I tried it before and found that it holds the perfect balance of rums and fresh juices and isn’t too terribly sweet. I contemplated getting another one of these potent concoctions, but opted instead for a mojito. Dana ordered her favorite drink: “something creamy.” In this case, it was the Road to Hana, which contains banana and chocolate liqueurs. For dinner we decided to get a few things

ONO KINEGRINDS to share. While we contemplated the sushi selections the guys sitting next to us got their Ahi Rainbow Tower, which is unlike any sushi I’ve ever seen. It’s ahi poke layered with white rice and a mango, pineapple and avocado mixture, then topped off with lots of bright red masago and a wasabi-ginger drizzle. They serve it with wonton chips, so it’s kind of like sushi salsa.

BY JESSICA ARMSTRONG JESSICA@MAUITIME.COM

It looked absurdly delicious, but Dana and I wanted something crunchy and green. So we ordered the grilled vegetable chop salad. It’s a huge bowl of romaine lettuce with lots of perfectly seasoned squash, zucchini, asparagus, tomato and Maui onions, then topped with toasted coconut, macadamia nuts and a sweet Maui onion dressing. Even though there were two of us, we couldn’t make it to bot-

tom of the bowl before our entrée arrived. And that would be the Gaucho Shrimp Enchiladas with green tomatillo-avocado sauce. Three fresh corn tortillas came stuffed with cheese and shrimp. The whole thing was nice and mild but needed a little hot sauce to spice it up. On the side we ordered Portuguese fried rice that came with lots of little bits of savory sausage and creamy black beans.

If I wasn’t sharing with Dana (who is allergic to wheat) I would have dove in to a big plate of fried onion rings or sweet potatoes. The pupu platter, which comes with five different items and a trio of dipping sauces, is definitely on my list of things to try next. They also do fresh, local fish with creative preparations, sandwiches, burgers and ribs, so I have lots of reasons to come back for more. MTW

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

Love your Mother Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 19-20) various times and locations [EVENT] I’d like to say that “Earth Day is everyday,” but on this island we’re celebrating it over the weekend. There are two really big, really different events that celebrate our big ol’ swirling planet of mostly water: Earth Day at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and the Earth Day Festival at Baldwin Beach. Both are free and Earth-friendly, but other than that they couldn’t be more different. The Sixth Annual Earth Day at the Botanical Gardens takes place on Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and focuses on cultural activities and conservation of the things that make Hawai‘i so very special. George Kahumoku Jr. and Uncle Richard Ho‘opi‘i will perform along with three different halaus. There will be kappa, cordage, lei making, poi pounding and spear throwing. Of course, there will be lots of good grinds and conservation organizations to fill the opu and mind with good stuff. The festival at Baldwin Beach happens Sunday from 10 a.m. till sunset. There will be live music, speakers and performances, environmental and social awareness booths, keiki activities and lots of food. There will even be a helicopter photo at 3 p.m. with the intent to get the message out that we really need to stop global warming, like, yesterday. For more information on Saturday’s event visit www.mnbg.org or call 2492798. For more information on Sunday www.mauiearthday.org or call 572-6929. [STARR BEGLEY]

ThIS WEEK’S PICKS by Starr Begley

Crazy for Coco Saturday (Apr. 19) 7:30 p.m., McCoy Studio Theater, MACC

Photo: Peter Palladino

[STAGE] You may have seen Miss Coco Peru, the hilarious L.A. drag damsel, on TV late one night while watching reruns of Will and Grace or Arrested Development, or else in films like Girls Will Be Girls (for which she won awards for best actress AND best actor!) and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar, in which she played her saucy self. While she sparkled in all of these performances, nothing is quite like a live, personal Coco experience. She sings, dances and tells stories with incredible vivacity that audiences laugh, cry and think. In her new solo show, called Ugly Coco, she tells the moving and yet still funny story of her transformation from boyhood to draghood, asking the question, “Can a drag queen save the world?” Anyone who can manage to look unbelievable in a pair of size 13 heels certainly has a shot. Tickets: $20. 2427469. [Jessica Armstrong]

Saturday (Apr. 19) at 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC [MUSIC] This legendary music posse is half slack key guitar master and Hawaiian language song composer Barry Flanagan, half Nathan Aweau— the unbelievable, multi-talented Hawaiian musician—and half `oli (or Polynesian chant) guru Charles Ka`upu. Yes, Iknow that makes a mathematically impossible three halves, but I think that might be what makes their contemporary Hawaiian sound so unique and flavorful. In fact, you could say their music has been dubbed “the sound of Hawai`i” since they put out their self-titled debut album back in 1993 and won six Na Hoku Hanohano awards, making it the biggest Hawaiian language album by a group or duo in the history of the awards. Yeah, they’re kind of a big deal, but only if you’re in to a tantalizing, inspiring union of Hawaiian sounds, acoustic American folk rock and spiritual ancient chants. Tickets: $38, $27, $10. 242-7469 [JA]

20 Years of Dance Saturday and Sunday (Apr. 19-20) at 7:30 p.m. Sat., 3 p.m. Sun. at the Performance Studio, Seabury Hall, Makawao [DANCE] I can’t believe that it’s already time for the 20th Annual Dance Showcase at Seabury Hall. This year, there will be 60 performers under the direction of dance program director David Ward. This year’s theme is “reflections of the past;” according to Ward, it will be a “retrospective journey of past works that were highlights of the program over the years.” The show also runs Fri & Sat. Apr. 25-26 at 7:30 and Sun. 27 at 3 p.m. Tickets: $11 adults, $9 Seniors, $5 Students. For more information and reservations call 573-1257.

Sweet Stuff Thursday (Apr. 24) 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center [Performance] Honey is rare. Not in quantity, mind you, but in the fact that it’s a food product that is intensely sweet, good for you and never goes bad. Sweet Honey in the Rock–an African American female vocal group–is similar in the sense that there’s nothing quite like it. The last time they were on Maui was back in 2002 and the audience loved them (hence the early warning for those of you who don’t have tickets yet). These women blend sounds found in gospel hymns with influences of jazz, rap and reggae for an experience that’s pretty much indescribable. The women in the group aren’t just musicians, composers, arrangers, singers and storytellers, but poets and activists, too. Tickets: $40, $25, $10. FILMCRITIQUE

BY COLE SMITHEY COLE@MAUITIME.COM

Full-Frontal Assault American cinema isn’t all about Bush anymore Full-frontal male nudity achieves de rigueur R-rated status in American cinema thanks to the shameless efforts of Judd Apatow’s gang of cutting-edge writers and directors that have delivered movies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Superbad. It’s not exactly telling tales out of school to reveal Sarah Marshall’s opening scene wherein one very nude Jason Segal exposes more than just his character–Peter Bretter’s heart on his sleeve before being unceremoniously dumped by his girlfriend of the film’s title.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

★★★★★ Rated R/112 min.

Sarah (Kristen Bell) is a semifamous television actress who throws over Peter’s affections in favor of a Fabioesque British singer/songwriter called Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Unromantic and romantic intrigue follow when Peter attempts to escape his broken heart on a trip to Hawai‘i where Sarah and her cocky boy toy have coincidentally rented a room in the same all-inclusive resort. Segel makes a nearly lovable sadsack who gets some sensual healing from the hotel’s lovely concierge Rachel (Mila Kunis). The comedy is at once sophisticated, bawdy, and infused with ridiculous situations derived from screenwriter/actor Segal’s checkered romantic past. At the heart of the volatile satire is the droopy torch that overly sensitive Peter carries for his shallow celebrity ex-girlfriend. Tall and pudgy Peter composes and performs piano music for Sarah’s quirky homicide TV show that features kinky sexual aspects to all its victims’ deaths. He’s a work-at-home guy who relishes eating gargantuan bowls of sugary breakfast cereal in the raw. As we learn via clever flashback sequences, Sarah wore the pants in the relationship. At premiers, paparazzi yell at the out-of-place “boyfriend” to get out

of the shot so they can feed on Sarah’s white bread beauty like guppies at dinnertime while he’s left holding her purse. The experience of dating such a gore-hound for attention has left him emasculated with the kind of self-loathing that ad agencies build empires on. On the flipside of Sarah’s not-so-brilliant design for fleeting romance is her dubious choice for Peter’s replacement. Aldous Snow is a phony and a stereotypical fame-glutton so in love with himself that he makes Sarah’s half-hearted narcissism seem amateurish by comparison. Here’s Sarah’s role model that taught her how to treat Peter. A lot of comedy derives from seeing Peter come face to face with this double rival whose egotistical attitude Sarah vicariously lords over him. For as much pain as the cult-of-celebrity has inlicted on Peter, the climate of corporate slackerdom comes to his rescue. Kunis’ Rachel couldn’t care less about any hotel employee policies about not fraternizing with guests, and her unfocused working class character is an effective foil against the Sarah Marshalls and Aldous Snows of the world. Sarah’s visage may have the approval of the masses, but Rachel’s outward beauty is reinforced with a generous nonchalance that all but cancels out Sarah’s excuses for existence. The filmmakers have fun poking some lesbian subtext into a couple of encounters between Rachel and Sarah. It’s this kind of random tension that simmers between the film’s guffawinducing sex scenes.

Now this is the Hawai`i I know

Fans of Judd Apatow’s comedies will appreciate Paul Rudd’s performance as an ageless surfing instructor, and Jonah Hill’s fawning role as a gay restaurant maitre ‘d with a sideline-recording career. Director Nicholas Stoller makes his directing debut, but the movie belongs to Segel for his audacious script and constant presence as a recovering romantic accoutrement. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a romantic comedy for guys, but there’s plenty of material aimed at female audiences as well, not the least of which are the full-

Leizu’s Legacy Elaine Gima and Chris Moore bring vibrant color to Wailuku Town Silk painter Elaine Gima and designer Chris Moore have been collaborating on silky projects for nearly 20 years. Recently they decided to return to their roots and work out of Moore’s studio, Manikin, located on Market Street in the heart of Wailuku Town. Silk has been their main source of income, artistic expression and a solace from the ups and downs that come with life for just about as long as they can remember.

Manikin 53 N. Market Street, Wailuku 243-9843

Chinese mythology has it that the discovery of silk occurred when a silkworm cocoon unceremoniously dropped into Empress Leizu’s teacup and while removing it, she unraveled into–Ta Da!–silk. According to Wikipedia, the history of silk began way back in the 27th century BC in China where it remained exclusively until around the year 300. For a thousand years, the right to wear silk was reserved only for the emperor and the highest people of his court. The Crusades brought it over to Western Europe. But when the Industrial Revolution made spinning cotton a piece of cake, beautiful, rich silk fabric took a backseat to the ease of modern technology. But today, China appears to once again be the world’s largest silk producer. Completely self-taught, Gima began silk painting 20 years ago when she moved back to Maui with her young daughter after a divorce. “It was a total accident,” Gima told me. “I bought a silk painting kit from Ala Moana [Shopping Center on Oahu] and thought, ‘I can do this!’” One inexpensive how-to starter kit turned into multiple accounts supplying painted silk kimono tops to resort stores. “I’m sure not rich, but I was able to support my daughter off of just silk painting,” she said. Over the years, Gima’s work has been featured in local galleries–most recently her work was on display at

Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao–and she has taught classes through Maui Community College’s VITEC program. While visiting with the women in Moore’s studio, I was taken with the fluid nature of the silk, its movement and the vibrant colors that it holds. Much of Gima’s work has a local Asian theme to it–fish, water and flowers. Her work appears more organic and seems easier on the eye than traditional silk painting that tends to have a lot of definite blocks of color and shapes. “Because Elaine didn’t learn the ‘this is how you’re supposed to do it’ way,” Moore said, “because she does what came natural to her, her work stands out.” Moore, who also owns CY Maui–a retail store in Wailea–said that silk is very flattering to the human form. Gima added that it’s a forgiving fabric and sensual. “Silk carries good energy,” Gima said. “It’s made from ‘happy worms.’ Seriously, silkworms will only thrive if they are coddled, clean and in a serene environment.” Then she paused and shared a knowing smile with Moore. “Silk throws out energy,” Gima then said. “When I worked in a shop, the newest silk piece brought in was like a magnet. People would walk straight to it without even knowing it.” “It’s true,” Moore said. “It’s a good conductor. It’s a protein–a living thing. It’s a good vessel for energy. It sounds kind of crazy.” “But it’s true!” laughed Gima. Moore shrugged and nodded in agreement. “I guess nowadays we can say stuff like that.” MTW

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your life this week will be like a badly-designed roller coaster; the ride is over just as it’s getting good. You’ve barely uttered your first whoop of delight when suddenly you’re pulling into the boarding area and someone else is waiting to take your seat. There’s not much you can about the ride itself; that’s sort of out of your hands. What I would do is focus on the positive. In your case that’s likely to be the person sitting next to you on the ride, who’s just as disappointed as you are, and just as likely to be game to help you make up something more exciting—and sustainable—to do.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) While you’re anxiously and impatiently waiting for one specific thing to happen, you’re missing out on a whole host of other great stuff. It’s like you’re awaiting the dawn, and can’t enjoy anything that happens until the sun peeps above the horizon, just because it’s dark. Can you please accept that the sun will come up exactly when scheduled, no matter how hard you wish it would arrive sooner? Then you might be able to stop trying to will the day into existence and just enjoy all the good stuff that’s happening right now, in the wee hours of the morning.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Your cravings are desperately out of synch with reality, and that’s going to cause buttloads of problems for you this week. Not only will you not be able to enjoy the bowl of strawberry shortcake placed in front of you because it’s not the chocolate mousse you were longing for, but you’ll be so distracted by your desire for one type of companionship that you could completely miss the offers for other (in my opinion, better) forms sent your way. You know that song that goes, “If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.” Consider that mantra this week. You may discover that the one you’re with is way better anyway; you just never bothered to notice before.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) A bee in your iced tea at a family picnic could mean a lose-lose situation for everyone concerned. However, if you’re paying attention, you could make it not so bad, by fishing out the bee (still sucks for her) before you drink. Your correct anticipation of potential trouble and astute observation of the situation at hand could help you avoid all potential disasters this week. That’s the good news. The bad news is that there are plenty of crises that require avoidance. Keep your eyes peeled and don’t rest for a second. The bees will never cease contemplating kamikaze dives into your drink. Be ready for them.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Frequent encounters with the one or two chronically bitter sourpusses you know could be major downers, but please don’t let them get to you. I know these people are bitchy and impossible to please, and that’s horribly annoying. But letting it irritate you will never be helpful. Know that their situation is impossible for you to change. It may be useful to notice and remember that by and large these are desperately unhappy people. That concept, whose truth should be obvious, may trigger the lubricating compassion you need to let their bullshit slide off your back this week.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) As romantic as sex on the beach may sound, those who’ve actually tried it will recall that by and large it’s a rather gritty, potentially uncomfortable affair. You’ll find that to be the case a lot this week—what sounds good in theory will prove less practical when you get down to actually doing it. That doesn’t mean you need to abandon the venture entirely; it just might need a bit of tweaking to work as intended. There’s still plenty of whatever you’re looking for there—just getting to it might be trickier than you thought. Get creative, and sex on the beach will be just as dreamy and steamy as it was in your head.

Available at more

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Ooh, snarky! Your silver tongue has taken on an a surprisingly sharp edge of late. Usually you don’t like to risk offending people to this degree, but I guess the pressure just built up to intolerable levels, and you had to let people have it, come what may. Personally, I like it. But this shift in your dynamic might require more attitude adjustment than some of your friends are capable of. They’re used to the non-confrontational version of you, and the person who’s stepped forward, willing to make enemies instead of being desperate to be liked by everyone, is someone they may not recognize. There comes a time for every Libra when you have to make a choice between being liked and sticking to your guns. For some of you, that time may come this week.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

than 200

350 locations

Get your beauty sleep this week, Scorpio. The stresses you’ll face will seem negligible and ridiculously easy to deal with if you have a certain amount of serenity, patience, and energy. If you don’t have a stockpile of internal resources, however—like if you’re sleep-deprived—you could become completely overwhelmed and break down. So make sure you don’t stretch yourself too thin; you’ll need a lot of resilience and bounce when the shit starts to fly. In other words, take every break you can, and soak up every minute of rest. You want to be ready to jump into action whenever the action starts—and that could be any second now.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Find neutral mental territory. Let’s use animals as an example of what I mean. Some people treat their pets like children. Others think it’s okay to kick a dog because, “it’s just a dog.” There’s a happy middle ground here, where animals can be accorded respect and dignity, but not dressed in bibs and baby bonnets and given a seat at the dinner table. You thought you lived in that reasonable land between extremes, but this week you may discover that you’re closer to putting diapers on your dog than you thought. Whatever the subject, find a place where equilibrium, reason, and common sense prevail, and move there right away.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You like being prepared so much and knowing what lies ahead that you tend to spoil your own surprises. Chances are no one you know is as slick and crafty as you; thus you’re virtually impossible to trick. You tend to uncover plots (both benevolent and malevolent) long before they ever come to fruition. This week you may expose yet another less-than-sinister plan to make you a happier person. Luckily, if you’re clever, no one will discover your discovery. In other words: please pretend you’re surprised when the thing actually happens. It’ll make everyone—including you—happier, which was kind of the point all along.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) A friend of mine recently had a baby and was accosted by all kinds of Mommy Nazis when they saw her bottle-feeding her kid. For medical reasons, she wasn’t able to breast-feed the child, but these wouldbe do-gooders were relentless, verging on cruel at times, accusing her of child abuse for “denying” her infant breast milk. Beware this kind of thing this week, Aquarius. You may feel strongly about a subject, but just like those fascistic mammarians, you don’t know the whole story. Give people the benefit of the doubt (or just mind your own business), please.

No one’s going to understand your “system” for doing things. By your own admission, it’s illogical and inefficient. The thing is, it works for you, and you’re the only person it has to work for. Don’t feel compelled to do things a different way just because other people don’t get it. Go ahead with the methods you know will get results, for you. Some people may bitch, whine, and question you, but as long as you don’t let that rattle you, you should be able to produce something that’s better than they expected. Allow them to make you nervous or filled with self-doubt, though, and it’s all for naught; they’ll have proven themselves right.

Yes, Maui's climate affords us the luxury of being able to do that nearly year-round, but seriously—when was the last time you went outside simply for fun and relaxation? Now you have no excuse: our Summer Guide will help you plan your special Maui adventure.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY

This weekend, the hubby and I went to the War Memorial Gym to watch the Mixed Martial Arts event “War on the Valley Isle: Invasion.” We went sans children, primarily because my daughter just isn’t into watching people get hit in the face and my son–at the tender age of two–already has a tendency to run around in saggy bib-a-dee’s shouting, “I fight-ah!, I fight-ah!” The stands were packed–row after row of mostly local faces, a lot of the guys clothed in Tap-Out or Maui Mulisha shirts; the girls in teeter-shoes, tight jeans and tube-tops. Sure, the hubby and I love the sport and know a lot of people deeply immersed in it, but compared to the majority of the people there, I felt that at least by physical appearances (hello, I was wearing a top I crocheted myself) we were outsiders. Of course we weren’t. When I was a kid, my dad had a big fat key ring that held the power to unlock everything–it seemed to me–on the island. When it came to the gym, I’m pretty sure that part of his job was to turn off the lights, make sure the place wasn’t a wreck and lock up after an event. This meant a lot of really late nights, but it also meant that my brother and I got to do some really awesome things that we would never have been able to do otherwise because our parents didn’t have money for tickets. These were the days long before the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, when most events took place at War Memorial. Remember Menudo? Aw Yeah! Guess who not only saw them live, but also got stuffed animals and a mirror from them? Guess who Robby Rosa nearly mowed down while making a mad dash with the rest of the group (including Ricky Martin!) to a car waiting in the back after the show? And you want to know why? Because my daddy took me, decked out in my favorite Rainbow Bright shirt, backstage to see them. There was the Harlem Globetrotters and countless MIL basketball games–most of which my brother and I passed the time by playing under the bleachers and looking for money that fell from people’s pockets. By far my favorite shows involved wrestling. My dad always put a hand on my shoulder, stood me up to the towering men and said, “This is my daughter.” I met Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, Shawn Michaels, Sergeant Slaughter, Kamala, Scary Sherri, Rocky Johnson and Kerry Von Eric. There were others–people that never quite made it to the big time. In fact, I remember waiting in our car out back before a show while my dad was working and two young haole wrestlers tried to throw the mack down on my mom. Once, after the show, I watched the wrestlers–good guys and bad–drink beer together. It wasn’t the drinking that shocked and appalled me—it was the realization that the animosity between the fighters used just hype. Now that I’m an adult, I can’t help but wonder if growing up “backstage” influenced me to do what I do today. I still meet amazing people and often get an inside look into productions. Only this time, I’m the one taking my kids to events and introducing them to people that they probably wouldn’t otherwise meet. Still, my job isn’t nearly as cool as my dad’s. He may have been a county worker, but he had the keys. That’s power. Starr Begley also had some really fun times at the zoo after closing time. MTW
