I read your article [“Civil Right,” March 5] and immediately went back for extra copies. I was headed into Wailuku to attend a candlelight vigil inside the Episcopal Church and wanted the people there to be aware of your piece. I have been a committed relationship with the same woman for 32 years and am so tired of having to fight this fight. WAGE WAR Re last week’s Eh Brah! about the rowdy keiki at Foodland: The comic comes close to what I’ve seen customers do in my “career” in retail. I swear, Maui has some of the most inept customers and/or dramahyper entitlement whores out there. While Stewart nails politicians and talking heads brilliantly during pre-written bits, he usually gives them the kid glove treatment when they’re in-studio. In November on a Saturday night you went to the resource center and picked out a bicycle from the racks. You chose the turquoise mountain bike with the basket on the front. The bicycle my friend who died from cancer gave me. What you didn’t notice is that we saw you. This is Maui. Now I see you every day as you ride my bike to the beach past my job in Spreckelsville. I see you didn’t like the front basket and have added rear baskets instead. I saw you on Puunene yesterday while I was working again, making money to pay my bills. I do what is pono. No time to chase you. You are haole. You wear the same straw hat you were wearing the night you chose to cockroach my bike.

I’ve seen your face. So it doesn’t matter if you paint my bike or steal a different one. Maybe you will get caught. You won’t do what is pono so I am writing this. After all, this is Maui.

Call to action State lawmakers are deciding Hawaii’s future. Don’t let them do it alone his time of year, everything at the state Capitol is on the fast track. For some incomprehensible reason, the Hawaii state legislature is expected to accomplish an entire year’s work in a mere 15 weeks.

The consequence of the condensed time frame for legislative review is a lawmaking process that is more accessible to paid lobbyists, and less userfriendly to the general public.

Still, citizen input is essential to good government. And with a little coaching, you too will be empowered to take action on vital bills currently under review.

A good place to start is at the Hawaii Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB), which maintains an office at the state Capitol. The nonpartisan LRB aims to provide public access to the legislative branch of state government. They undertake research, catalog extensive library resources and are adept at answering community inquiries, from the mundane to the complex.

Sometimes it’s necessary to bombard committee chairs with calls in order to assure that they will even schedule a hearing for a bill, as opposed to allowing it die without a vote.

Topics such as the proposed same-sex civil unions proposal (House Bill 444) have garnered big media attention, while others such as Senate Bill 1318, which

Some bills make it inside, some wind up in the dumpster. by imposing a tax on barrels of imported oil. He notes this is the first time a bill has linked both food and energy, and believes that Hawaii has a better chance to achieve self-sufficiency by working on them together, not separately.

Blue Planet Foundation, launched in April 2008 with a summit that included speakers Hunter Lovins, Ramsey Taum and Robert Kennedy Jr., is a newcomer to lobbying at the state Capitol. But they have employed the services of one of Hawaii’s foremost environmentalists, Jeff Mikulina, who chaired the Hawaii Sierra Club over the past 10 years.

Blue Planet, whose stated mission is “to change our world’s energy culture,” lists more than a dozen current bills as “priority measures.” Among them are bills to prohibit building new or expanding existing fossil fuel-fired power plants (HB1843, SB1671); establish energy efficiency targets (SB1173); adopt California’s standards for fuel-efficient cars (SB1174); establish a clean energy investment fund (HB1271); provide tax incentives and rebate credits for investments in electric cars (SB551, SB1185, SB1202); and disallow homeowner covenants that prohibit using clotheslines to dry laundry (HB1273, SB1338).

Sierra Club Hawaii’s new director Robert Harris has flagged two bills (SB1008, HB834) that would drastically cut water quality standards, thus threatening our beaches and streams through greater allowable levels of toxins and bacteria.

Harris also alerted Sierra Club members to “keep corporate fat cats out of elections” by working to stop House Bill539.

That measure seeks to lift the $1,000 limit on corporate contributions to political campaigns, an idea Harris deems “a huge step in the wrong direction.”

The Sierra Club also urged support to protect Natural Area Reserve System (NARS) funding by opposing HB1741. By suspending all contributions to NARS through real estate conveyance taxes, this measure is being sold as belt-tightening in light of a sagging economy. But it would rob healthy watersheds, forested areas and marine eco-systems such as ‘AhihiKina‘u of needed safeguards.

AHEA, the Environmental Alliance, has set up a “virtual testimony” Web site link to provide input on three critical bills. The first is a SB502, one of four proposed bills that would allow the University of Hawaii to be “vested with autonomous

So this is almost a month old, but I can’t resist. While sorting through some faxes, I came across one from the D.C.-based Ronald Reagan Legacy Project titled “Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle Fails to Issue Reagan Day Proclamation.”

Seems February 6 would have been Reagan’s 98th birthday, and the folks over at the Legacy Project were hoping the nation’s governors would see fit to declare a day in his honor.

Reaganites have previously tried to get the 40th president’s head on Mount Rushmore, a piece of currency and a postage stamp (which, comedian Bill Maher cuttingly observed at the time, was “just so they could lick his ass”), so it’s no surprise they want a holiday named after him, too. But here’s the part of the release I found rather galling: “It is essential that Americans recognize President Reagan’s legacy of economic growth and freedom from tyranny.” Let’s set aside the undeservedly large share of credit Ronnie cheerleaders (and that’s pretty much the whole Republican Party) are always giving him for single-handedly defeating the Red Menace, and just focus on that other bit about “economic growth.” Seriously? According to a Honolulu Advertiser report, Senate President Colleen Hanabusa said some senators are having second thoughts about pulling the bill onto the floor for a full vote because of “the importance of…the committee process.” How noble of them, respecting the process like that. I’m sure the sudden indecisiveness has nothing to do with fear of political backlash.

We made our stance clear last week, so I’ll reiterate only briefly: this is a historical moment. How our elected officials choose to vote—or if they choose to take the coward’s way out and not vote at all—will be remembered… In other news: Just got word from Rep. Neil Abercrombie’s camp that he’s coming to Maui on Sunday to make a “big announcement!” (Their exclamation point, not mine.) His intention to run for governor in 2010 has been an open secret for a while now, so it’s a safe bet he’s not hopping the pond just to hand out free candy. More on this to come, obviously.

SATURDAY, MARCH 7 Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire: Jumping from one beleaguered, cash-strapped arena to another, Mike McCartney is stepping down as director of the state Teacher’s Association to take the reins of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. McCartney served as chair of HTA’s board for two years beginning in 2002 (another rough period for the visitor industry) before being ousted by Gov. Lingle. He replaces Rex Johnson, who you may recall became a political punching bag after he was caught forwarding racist and sexist e-mails on the company computer. An interesting footnote on the Johnson saga, reported in today’s Maui News, is that he was given a $290,000 “resignation payment.” Also known as: shut-up-and-go-away money…

In other news: It’s official. A second release from Abercrombie’s people that landed in my inbox moments ago flatly admits he’s announcing his gubernatorial run. Nice to see them ditch the faux secrecy; it was a tad silly to assume people would only show up if it was billed as a “surprise.” (Though I was holding out hope for free candy.)

In addition to threatening the Conservation District designation and impacting sacred Hawaiian sites, KAHEA notes, “this is one of the largest grabs for public trust ceded lands ever and could be the future of Haleakala on Maui, as well, if it is not stopped now.”

The KAHEA.org Web site also asks for support for two measures—HB 1663 and SB 709—that would establish a full ban on genetically modified taro. Meanwhile, another GMO bill that would preempt such action has already cleared the House Agricultural Committee.

HB 1226 would add a new chapter of Hawaii law to provide that “no state administrative regulatory action shall ban or restrict a person from genetically modifying within the State any plant organism if the genetic modification is performed in accordance with a valid permit from the relevant federal agency.”

The measure further seeks to mandate that no county action could prevent or regulate genetic modification of plant organisms, either.

Hawaii Superferry, top spender last year among lobbyists, appears to still hold sway at the state Capitol. HB1171, recently passed with amendments, would extend the dates provided in the special session legislation of Act 2, allowing the fast-ferry to operate while preparing their own environmental review.

The U.S. Humane Society is supporting SB1194, making it illegal to possess the razor-sharp knives and slashers that are strapped on rooster legs for cockfighting.

Hawaii, they point out, has one of the country’s weakest cockfighting laws because they do not ban such implements or otherwise prohibit associated activities. his year, sending testimony on any House or Senate bill is even easier, thanks to a new link: capitol.hawaii.gov/emailtestimony.

Superferry

Progress reporT With failing grades across the board, Hawaii Superferry may be the biggest boondoggle in state history fter more than a full year of operation, it’s time to give the albatross of inter-island travel known as the Hawaii Superferry a progress report. Has the high-speed ferry service given indications it can be profitable in the long term? Has there been justification for Gov. Linda Lingle leading the charge, with state legislators close behind, to rewrite the state’s environmental laws to allow Superferry to operate? Has the entire state been taken for a choppy, 40 knots per hour, $45 million ride? And is this the biggest boondoggle in state history?

LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS AND PROMISES

In 2004, Hawaii Superferry’s (HSF) promotional pitch was for a convenient way to connect the islands, at half the cost of inter-island airfares. With Oahu as the hub, the “fast-ferry” would provide vehicle and passenger shuttles to Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

In the 18 months since HSF launched its service in September 2007 (with a special $5 rate that flaunted a Supreme Court decision days earlier that would have kept them docked until an Environmental Impact Statement was prepared) only the Maui route has materialized. Kauai issues have never been resolved in the year and a half since protesters paddled out to prevent the massive vessel from entering Nawiliwili harbor.

The proposed route to Kawaihae Harbor on the Big Island hasn’t come to be either, as the arrival of HSF’s second vessel has been delayed while the Austal shipyard in Alabama fits it with a loading ramp that could make the state’s $38 million investment in a bargeand-ramp loading system obsolete.

WISE USE OF TAXPAYER’S MONEY

Beyond the $40 million originally appropriated by the state legislature to support improvements to benefit HSF, recent articles and comments have highlighted millions more that have been or will be spent.

Among the unbudgeted, additional costs are: repair of the barge and pier damaged in Kahului harbor from winter wave swells (over $3 million); cost of a special legislative session, passing Act 2 to overturn a court ruling requiring environmental review; cost of an oversight task force and inspections of vehicles; cost to prepare a “pseudo” EIS as required by Act 2 (nearly $2 million); and deployment of Coast Guard, police and undercover security on Maui and Kauai.

Repeatedly, HSF asked state officials and the public to trust them, and to expedite their approvals to allow them to prove their reliability. By and large, Gov. Lingle sloughed off criticism as though she were coated in Teflon and numerous state officials followed suit. Maui Rep. Joe Souki killed a House bill to require environmental review for HSF by refusing to schedule a hearing in his Transportation Committee. House Speaker Calvin Say—whose son is an HSF employee—led the charge during the special legislative session to pass Act 2. Attorney General Mark Bennett acted less like someone entrusted to interpret and enforce state laws in the public interest and more like Lingle’s personal lawyer.

(A bit of good news: State Auditor Marion Higa issued her report in January, finding “that the legislation [Act 2] on behalf of Hawaii Superferry compromised the State’s environmental laws and set a worrisome precedent for future government accommodation that puts the interests of a single business before the State’s environmental, fiduciary, and public safety responsibilities.” Higa’s thorough audit is worthy of an A+, as are the efforts of State Sens. Shan Tsutsui, Kalani English, Gary Hooser and Russell Kokubun, who fought to heed community concerns and uphold laws requiring environmental review.)

Meanwhile, HSF contributed handsomely to the campaign spending accounts of key politicians, including Lingle and Souki. A recent Hawaii State Ethics Commission report shows that HSF was tops in lobbying expenditures, with more than $380,000 spent during the past 14 months.

Whale collisions and the spread of invasive species topped the list of environmental concerns raised by citizens, and highlighted the need for legal review before HSF could begin service. HSF claimed they had worked out a whale avoidance policy, with whale

spotters, night vision technology, and routes to minimize entering sanctuary waters during peak season.

But the high-speed, 349-foot long Alakai was delivered without forward-looking sonar technology and the 882-ton vessel regularly speeds through the Penguin Banks area between Molokai and Lanai, averting the longer, rougher route along Molokai’s north shore where whales are less frequently sighted.

Vehicle inspections geared toward prevention of invasive species transport have turned up another problem—plundering of Maui’s marine resources.

Inspectors confiscated hundreds of pounds of reef fish, limu (edible seaweed), opihi and even truckloads of river rock headed back to Oahu. With the oversight task force now disbanded, state inspection officers are no longer on the job, leaving the company employees responsible for monitoring what is transported.

EASE OF TRAVEL AND RELIABILITY

Shortly after an unplanned trip to dry-dock in February 2008 for repairs (exacerbated when a tugboat dented the vessel, and when it shifted on

its blocking, damaging both hulls) the Superferry resumed service. In early April, strong trade winds and ocean swells caused seasickness in more than half the passengers onboard. Again this past January, rough oceans nauseated passengers, damaged more than a dozen vehicles and forced cancellations.

Under better weather conditions, the ferry service has earned praise from some of its regular commuters, and from visitors to Hawaii.

ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY

F

HSF has been unable to maintain vehicle and passenger loads of at least half-capacity, the stated operational break-even point. Fuel prices have vacillated greatly, which is of considerable concern given the Alakai’s fuel-inefficient engines (which burn an astounding 6,000 gallons of diesel per one-way trip).

Even with the addition of fuel surcharges, passed through to ferry users, the cost to power the Superferry is potentially crippling.

The infusion of large amounts of capital to bolster HSF by CEO John Lehman (leading neocon, New York City financier and Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan), has led many to believe he is less interested in seeing HSF succeed financially and more interested in doing a test run for the prototype Joint High Speed Vessel program. It is widely believed that Lehman’s investments in shipbuilding could be the principal reason for his involvement in promoting HSF, as an awarded Pentagon contract to construct the aluminum-hulled JHSV fast-catamarans could be worth billions of dollars. Two-margarita lunch Morning, midday or late night—Lulu’s in Lahaina will slake your thirst hen I set out to review the new Lulu’s in Lahaina I had a tough time deciding what hour of the day to go. Breakfast, with all of its sweet, syrupy connotations, is by far my favorite meal and the Lulu’s menu offers some very creative variations on the standard morning fare. Pricier dinner menus are typically the most sophisticated way to figure out if a restaurant is worthwhile. But I went looking for inspiration at lunchtime—a difficult time to please the palate and the wallet simultaneously— on the hunt for a good sandwich.

Actually, I put lunch off until three o’clock so that I could get a stiff cocktail, too, without feeling like too much of a lush.

The bar is the first thing you notice when you walk through the door. It’s enormous, and one way or another you have to walk around it to find a seat.

There are some sunny tables outside on the patio, but sadly the best Lulu’s can do for a view is the hustle and bustle of the Safeway parking lot. Inside is where the atmosphere is. Tiki décor and surf memorabilia decorate the walls all the way up to the high ceiling, giving the room a much beachier feel than its location would indicate. Pro surfers are catching an endless wave on the 12 or so flat-screen TVs around the restaurant and in the rear of the room in a plush, inviting corner two beautiful pool tables promise hours of entertainment.

My booth, a high-backed circular bench, could have comfortably sat seven or eight, but it was just my boyfriend and me. Our server, like seemingly everyone working there, was ultra laid back, which made for a relaxing, unhurried vibe. He suggested we start with a couple of Sandy Margaritas from the cocktail list and we happily obliged.

It wasn’t long before we found ourselves in tequila heaven with this top-shelf concoction that came with Patron, Gran Marnier and Li Hing Mui sea foam. It sounds strange, and this was definitely the first time I’ve had foam on a cocktail, but it was sweet and frothy and went down smooth. The boyfriend suspected they put something a little more addicting in there, since as soon as we’d finished the first we were craving another, but our server assured us it was just ingenuity mixed with perfectly legal ingredients.

I said I came in hunting for a sandwich, but we struggled to get past the pupus. Seriously, there were so many appetizers that sounded, um, appetizing that we considered just making a lunch out of four or five of them. For the sake of journalistic thoroughness, however, we decided on two appetizers, a salad and one entrée to share.

The first thing we tried was the Honolulu Hot Tuna, which turned out to be a force to be reckoned with. A very generous amount of Cajun spiced ahi came just barely seared, on top of a spicy veggie salad of marinated cucumbers, onion and tomatoes.

Our mouths on fire, we moved on to the Cane Fire Chicken skewers, which normally wouldn’t be something we’d order but did because our server’s eyes lit up like candles when he recommended it. We understood the emotion when we bit into the sweetest, most moist and tender bites of chicken smothered in a hoisin-ginger glaze and sprinkled with chili oil. While I savored one the boyfriend devoured three, and we contemplated getting another order.

We moved on to a refreshing salad dubbed Da North Shore, with crunchy chopped lettuce, Maui onions, Olowalu tomatoes, artichoke hearts, grilled avocado, feta cheese, shrimp and a caper vinaigrette.

We were pretty much full when our entrée arrived. We had contemplated getting a sandwich or even a burger, but when our eyes fell on the flatbread selections the deal was sealed. They might as well have named the sausage, pepper and onion flatbread the “Dave and Jessica,” because those are pretty much our favorite flavors. I was expecting something a little, well, flatter than what arrived, which was basically a personal pizza, but one bite of spicy sausage and sweet red peppers and I didn’t care much about the dimensions.

We skipped dessert, but only because two margaritas in the middle of the day seemed decadent enough. MTW

So it may come as a surprise that Maui is home to a thriving Celtic music outfit, the Isle of Maui Pipe Band, and that world-renowned bagpiper Jack Lee has made numerous appearances on the island and will make another this week in Makawao.

The history of Celtic music in Hawaii actually dates back to the 1800s, when Scottish immigrants brought traditional instruments with them across the Pacific. On the isle

pipers’ Web site, credit is given to Agnes Wallace for helping form Hawaii’s first pipe band in the 1960s. Two of her students went on to win a prestigious award on the Mainland and the music’s popularity in the Aloha State proliferated from there.

The history of the Isle of Maui Pipe Band doesn’t go quite as far back. The band credits its genesis to a day in the late ‘90s when longtime piper John Grant was “coaxed out of retirement” and joined forces with a sundry collection of likeminded music-makers to form Maui Celtic Pipes and Drums. Subsequent years saw the arrival of many more diverse and talented players, and in short order the band had attained full-blown legitimacy and a growing following.

At present, the band consists of 14 pipers and seven drummers (“when marching at full strength”), ranging in age from 13 to 67. They tout themselves as the “only pipe band in the world to wear the Hawaiian tartan,” a blue- and green-heavy plaid with a touch of red designed in 1997

by Douglas Herring of Oahu, who won a contest sponsored by the Caledonian Society of Hawaii.

Though not many chart-topping hits feature the bagpipe (and, come to think of it, more should), with its rich, melancholy sound the instrument is a natural for funerals and similarly solemn affairs.

The Pipe Band also plays parades and other gigs and conducts workshops.

Naturally they’re busy this time of year, as St. Patrick’s Day brings Celtic culture

(or at least an Americanized version of it) into popular focus.

Lee, who will join the Pipe Band at the Makawao Union Church, is a luminary in the piping world. His resume is littered with medals and accolades and, as pipe sergeant of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, he has won multiple world championships. Some clips of him in action are available on YouTube (including a 2006 Maui performance). Even if you don’t know a blowpipe from a chanter—and even if bagpipes aren’t your musical cup of tea—it’s impossible not to be impressed by Lee’s skill and precision.

In addition to the Makawao performance, the Pipe band will lend their lungs to

the St. Paddy’s Day proceedings at Mulligan’s on the Blue March 17. Check their Web site for more info on upcoming gigs and how you can get involved. Maybe next time you think of Maui, bagpipes won’t be so far from your mind. MTW

Super ordinary Graphic novel adaptation doesn’t live up to its brilliant source material f you only read one graphic novel in your lifetime, make it Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. I’ve been saying this for years, to the annoyance of my friends, but seriously—it lives up to its prestigious reputation. On paper, Watchmen is thrilling and complex,

but as a movie it’s an ambitious mixed bag, as visually rich as you’d hope but still a dumbed-down adaptation of brilliant source material.

A group of masked avengers and one superhero are known as The Watchmen, crime fighters who not only nail criminals but assist the U.S. government in fighting the war in Vietnam.

Years later, long after their glory days, someone is murdering them one by one, with the black sheep of the group, a psychopath named Rorschach, attempting to solve the mystery and put the team back together.

This all takes place in an alternate world where, in 1985, America won the Vietnam War, costumed heroes are pop culture figures and Richard Nixon is still president.

Director Zack Snyder’s film has superb special effects, some engaging performances, haunting moments and one sequence, depicting the origin of Dr. Manhattan, that’s one of the most powerful of the year. Patrick Wilson and Malin Akerman make an engaging pair of crime fighters, Billy Crudup is hypnotic as the nude, creepy, god-like Dr. Manhattan, Jackie Earl Haley makes Rorschach both repellent and somehow endearing and Carla Gugino, though underused, has a great closing scene.

On the downside, some of the acting is uneven (Matthew Goode, cast as the world’s smartest man, looks completely bored), there’s too much slow-motion, the soundtrack choices are odd (like a murder

See kids, this is why you don’t take steroids. scene set to Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable”), the actor playing Nixon looks like he’s wearing a bad Halloween mask and the film is very long, but somehow not long enough. This material needs more time to develop; several intriguing supporting characters are given cool introductions then shoved into the background.

The movie is also more violent than the graphic novel—please do not take keiki to see this. The R rating has once again been stretched to the breaking point.

Snyder apparently cut his movie by 30 minutes, and plans to release additional footage at a later date. But even if plot holes are filled and characters fleshed out in a longer cut, I’m not certain Snyder, with his style-over-substance approach, was the best director for this material.

Had Ridley Scott or Tim Burton been at the helm, Watchmen could’ve been more risk-taking, challenging and better developed. As is, it’s merely a well-made comic book movie and not a classic. MTW

RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN - PG Action - This remake stars the Rock, and manages to keep a plot going that involves a cab driver who picks up two teenage runaways who are in some type of trouble involving evil villains. 97 min.

Now Showing CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC PG - Thriller - This one actually sounds kind of twisted. A young New York City woman gets herself into debilitating credit card debt due to a grotesque shopping addiction, but manages to score a gig writing a financial advice column. Regardless, she finds her life unraveling because of her debt...this is a Disney flick, so I’m guessing the ending will be a happy one. 112 min.

CORALINE (3D) - PG - Animation - A young girl discovers a parallel reality with striking similarities to her own mundane existence. Luckily, there are some sinister non-bear elements that threaten to tear away at her host reality. 100 min.

FIRED UP - PG13 - Comedy - A couple of high school football dudes ditch football camp in favor of cheerleader camp. There is an infinitesimal possibility that hijinks and/or shenanigans will not ensue, but let’s not bank on that. 90 min.

GRAN TORINO - R - Drama - Clint Eastwood plays a grizzled racist/Korean War veteran who has remained in his Detroit neighborhood despite white flight (hey, that rhymed!). His concept of reality gets thrown for a loop through his interactions with a family of Hmong immigrants. 114 min.

HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU PG13 - Comedy - A group of loosely-connected young-ish people, all fumbling through the whole romantic relationship minefield, all dealing with their own shortcomings as well as those of the people that surround them, all figure it out in the end, presumably. 129 min.

INKHEART - PG - Fantasy - A young girl’s father discovers he has the power to bring certain characters from the stories he reads to life.

Unfortunately none of these characters are Jesus, Pan or even Tom Sawyer (all of whom are topics of about six Rush songs). 106 min.

THE INTERNATIONAL - R - Action - Here we have an attractive and unlikely pair (Naomi Watts in the form of a New York prosecutor and an Interpol agent played by Clive Owen) that happens upon a very powerful bank that sees nothing wrong with funding terrorism. As they cruise the globe in search of, I don’t know, clues?, they find that their own lives may be at risk. And not because of bears. 118 min.

JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3D CONCERT EXPERIENCE - G - Art, Foreign - A touching exploration of the human condition that chronicles the momentum of a nuanced musical performance that may finally, once and for all, solve the question that has long rattled throughout the halls academia: which Jonas brother is cutest? 76 min.

My master’s project was a lengthy journalistic piece that more or less charted the rise and fall of various industries in Florida as seen from State Road 60, which went from the Atlantic to the Gulf, from Vero Beach to Clearwater Beach. Numerous industries flourished and died along that road, including cattle, citrus, turpentine, phosphates, tourism and, yes, real estate. One of the most startling things one can learn from this road is that once something like development eats up those last few hundred acres of citrus groves, there’s really no going back. Hawaii has many parallels, except that there seems to be a glimmer of a chance, especially on Maui, that a more sustainable, sensible mindset can emerge and become common before all is lost. The 2009 Ag Fest aims to promote agriculture and sustainability on Maui. Farmers of everything that can possibly be raised on Maui (presumably with the exception of the obvious) will take part, and attendees can learn a thing or two about the process of cultivating crops, a key aspect to sustainable existence. Free.

The fact that I have not reproduced and don’t plan to may, to some, make me less qualified to rant about the current state of education not only in Hawaii, but nationwide. But just because I’m not all gung ho about adding to the human population does not mean I can’t see the effects of a system that promotes conformity and anti-intellectualism over creativity and informed citizenship. Hell, I’m a product of it myself. It’s hard to determine whether one education method is better than another, especially given all the alternatives available (usually at a cost). Montessori education is almost a century old, and stresses the importance of individual development over classroom control. Of course, such methods won’t be getting much help from the state any time soon. This means that super-fun fundraisers go a long way in ensuring longevity for this educational approach.

There is debate among MTW staffers as to the relevance of astrology. Some of us think horoscopes have no bearing on anything while others think there may, at times, be something to them. It’d be nice if they were for real. It’d be a hell of a lot easier to plan one’s year if one knew that one should avoid boy X because she’s about to get accepted into PhD program Y, or what have you. But, alas, no dice. As far as mythology goes, astrological signs themselves are pretty damned interesting. Take Pisces, which is the ruling constellation from mid-March to midApril. The Greek myth associated with the star cluster involves the goddess Aphrodite and her son, Eros. In order to dodge the monster Typhon, she turned herself and her son into fish and strung their tails together so as not to lose one another. Zeus rewarded them by sticking them among the stars. No Midnight’s Children, but not bad. In celebration of this constellation’s celestial prominence as well as the individuals whose fates it supposedly guides, African drum purveyor OmZone Maui is putting on a Pisces-themed rager in Haiku, complete with performances by Omar & the Soultones, among others. Attendees are encouraged to don Piscean attire, and have a chance at winning stuff for doing so. Tickets are available at Enchantress Boutique in Wailea, Mandala in Paia, Temple of Peace and Bangkok Cuisine. Huzzah. $15/$20 door.

For years, Chicago’s city fathers have deemed it necessary to dye the Chicago River green this time of year. It’s actually an improvement on the frigid waterway’s typical brownish-grey. Prior to our appropriation of the day commemorating the death of Ireland’s patron saint, however, Saint Patrick was actually associated with the color blue. But that color was already taken. I’m not sure what kind of hooch they imbibed in Saint Patrick’s time, but I doubt Irish car bombs were consumed as copiously as in our current epoch. But watering holes across the island are game to help us celebrate St. Paddy’s Day the only way we know how.

Mulligan’s on the Blue is doing its gi-normous deal, complete with performances by BrownChicken BrownCow, the Island of Maui Pipe Band, the Celtic Tigers and the Willie K. Band. Admission is free before 5pm ($20 thereafter) and there’s a free shuttle from the Dog & Duck starting at 7pm. A shuttle will also go between the Dog & Duck and Tip Ups, which, respectively, will feature performances by Jordan, Kanoa and the Crunch Pups and MGM and Gomega. Elsewhere, Kahului Ale House is doing Irish music starting at six. If you ever found out you’d had the procedure, you’d go absolutely nuts trying to rediscover what you’d lost, and why you’d ditched it. Admit it: you wouldn’t be able to let it go. Stop trying to abandon or forget the stuff that’s happened to you. If you ever succeeded, it would suddenly be your primary goal to get it back. Quit expending energy trying to ditch the the shit that’s dragging you down. Instead, try to figure out how to pick it up and run with it instead.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Arborsculpture is the art of manipulating saplings so that they’ll grow into certain shapes. It takes years for the trees to acquire their intended forms. Some Rams have a very hard time sticking with projects that take longer than they could conceivably go without food. Unfortunately, what you can accomplish in such a tiny timeframe is necessarily limited. This week, work on expanding it. That will probably involve figuring out a new way to operate, one that will help you sustain momentum indefinitely, instead of only as long as your (admittedly impressive) willpower holds out.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’ve heard the saying, “People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones,” and yet here you are, lobbing rocks, rotten tomatoes, and some very harsh words around as if you have nothing to fear in your crystal castle. Maybe you’re betting that others will be more forgiving and less confrontational than you are.

I wouldn’t take that bet, if I were you. It’s already too late to take back all the windows you shattered, but you can still mitigate any potential retaliation with some intensive damage control. Put down the projectiles and start picking up the pieces instead.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) How many locks does your front door really need? It’s not like you’ve got to repel nightly attacks by persistent, brain-seeking zombies, scratching to get in. One lock should do the trick—more will just make you seem paranoid and faintly ridiculous. There’s at least one person you’d really like to come in, who won’t wait for you to get twelve bolts, chains, and bars undone. They don’t want to come into a fortress; anyone that needs to be that guarded isn’t the right person for them. Make sure you can get that door open quickly, at their first timid knock; there’s not likely to be a second one.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Don’t pretend to be something you’re not. Any relationship founded on that premise is doomed to failure. I understand the temptation. The person you’re interested in (or already involved with) is captivated

by Quality X, something you don’t necessarily have much of. Pretending to have it might fool someone for a while, but it’s a guaranteed bust that will screw both of you over. Could Quality X become a vital integral part of who you actually are, though? More importantly, do you want it to? You’ll be stuck with it even if this person doesn’t stick around. If your answer to both questions is a resounding yes, by all means go for it. It not, you’re better off calling it quits now. Every masquerade ball must end, and your mask is likely to get ripped off very, very soon.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) I’m ready for spring, so I’m blasting the heat and dancing around in my underwear. It’s my own version of weather therapy. You should try it. There are some things in your life that are as outside of your immediate control as the climate. However, instead of feeling bitter that you can’t have what you want (at least not yet), create for yourself the next best thing. It should be more than enough to tide you over.

Being barely content is okay, especially if it’s just temporary. Bitterness never suits a Leo, though, so do what you have to, to make sure you never suffer it.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Where does your food come from? Do you know? Most people don’t, and don’t even think about that.

Isn’t that weird? You’d think we’d want to know where the hell the stuff we put in our mouths actually came from, and how it got to us. Yet somehow we’re used to not knowing or caring. I believe it’s important for us all to feel more connected to what supports us, but especially for you Virgos. Best-case scenario is you actually getting your hands in the dirt and growing some of your own food. Failing that, at least try to figure out where some of it comes from, and how it got from there to your kitchen. It sounds mundane, but that kind of knowledge is good for your soul.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) “Don’t get your hopes up,” people say, as if disappointment were the worst fate imaginable. It’s not, though. You get over it, and hoping for something and not getting it is still better than giving up without even trying. That, although it might hurt less at the time, still has a far more negative impact on your life overall—because only some of those seemingly inevitable disappointments and failures actually play out that way. When you go for it, you end up surprisingly yourself and getting what you want much more often than you’d guess. So go on, get your hopes up, and keep them there.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Stop looking for inspiration and start providing it. You’re your own best muse right now. Be the hero you seek, and cease trying to get other people to live up to your terrifying standards, or step up to virtually impossible challenges. The truth is, you’re the only person you know who’d actually be able to come close to the ideal you’ve got in mind right now. I’m sure that’s a little bit of a disappointment—it would’ve been great to have someone to look up to and emulate. But being that person is not only simply possible for you right now—it’s your calling.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) What you’re doing right now is the equivalent of an alcoholic trying to concentrate while there’s a glass of their favorite poison sitting right in front of them, or a dieter chewing on celery while staring at (and smelling) dessert. How much willpower do you think you have? And why are you making things so hard on yourself? Take temptation out of the equation, as much as possible. This is about actually entering a new chapter, not testing how far you’ll stretch before you snap and give in. While it’s good to check your limits periodically, this is not the time. In the name of getting shit done, make things easy on yourself right now.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Babies keep their own rhythms, which aren’t necessarily especially suited to your personal schedule.

They’ll keep you up at night, and demand your time and energy regardless of your personal convenience.

Some people get to that point, too, when they have an over-inflated sense of entitlement. You can’t blame a baby for his needy demands, but an adult who acts like that needs to be put in his place. You’re in a position to impart some of this kind of wisdom this week. It might take guts to do something like that, but you’ve got those. Don’t shirk your duty. It’s time for this particular baby to grow up.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Excluding all the unhealthy shortcuts, like drugs and surgery, there are two ways to lose weight: eat less, or exercise more (or, ideally, a little of both). Shortcuts to that particular goal rarely end well, if they ever do—it’s one of those things that’s best achieved by a lifestyle overhaul. This week is bound to present you with all kinds of temptations to take the fast and dirty path. It might indeed get you there, but it’s very slippery. You’re quite likely to fall along the way, and backslide once you get there. If you’re really serious about spending any kind of serious time at your destination, I’d take your time getting there, too.
