You guys should stick to covering “Arts and Entertainment,” you do a fairly good job at that, but leave the fear mongering and misinformation to the pros at Fox News. -Greg Hansen, Lahaina Anthony Pignataro responds: I didn’t call the company for my story because I feel its own public documents on Pulelehua and well contamination more than speak for themselves. For instance, the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Pulelehua had nothing on DBCP well contamination. But when public comments demanding DBCP information started coming in, the project’s Final EIS suddenly included this new language: “While Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc. continues to evaluate water supply alternatives, the most likely source for Pulelehua’s potable water will be from new wells… If a well produces water containing contaminants at levels above State or Federal guidelines, treatment would be required.” Now Greg, even a guy like you—who also works for Maui Land & Pineapple, which you neglected to say in your letter—should pause when reading that.

Although I’m pretty sure you won’t have the nerve to print the following letter, I would appreciate some sort of explanation as to what your motivations are in trying to pass off unresearched inferences as news. This is completely unprofessional and I would like some sort of response from you, even if you won’t print my letter. After reading the garbage you guys tried to pass off as a front page story “Toxic Water, Why People moving to Pulelehua may not want to turn on the faucet,” (Jan. 26, 2006). I realized that you guys are nothing more than a print version of Fox News. Aside from a brief historical narrative about the use of dangerous pesticides and their existence in certain wells on Maui, there are absolutely no facts to be found in this “article.” There are only scare tactics and inferences. Are you guys trying to insinuate that ML&P is going to try and sneak known toxic chemicals into Pulelehua water supply? ML&P has employed thousands of Maui residents for many generations, and many of them will be living in Pulelehua. Are you suggesting that ML&P has a sinister plot to poison their workers? Nowhere in your story do you mention that you tried to contact anyone from ML&P with your concerns about their water sources. Of course if you had bothered to contact ML&P, the facts would have ruined the “Fear Value” of your story. You quote Lance Holter as “dryly noting that the contaminated Napili A well is the closest potential water source to Pulelehua” when a cursory glance at any map clearly reveals that the Maui County Water treatment plant is located just a few hundred meters Mauka of the Pulelehua site. It is also worth mentioning that Maui County buys much of the water for West Maui from ML&P. The water that they purchase comes from mountain streams and is diverted far above any agricultural areas. I can’t wait to own a home in Pulelehua. It is the most conscientiously designed

After enjoying a very nice dinner in Whaler’s Village, my wife and I decided to stop by the bar for a drink. We found two empty barstools, but there was a purse on the counter in front of one of them, so we assumed that a person was reserving that spot. So we chose the other barstool—one of us sat while the other stood behind. Ten minutes went by, then you and your chick walked up to us and accused us of stealing your barstools. After a few words were exchanged, we decided to stop wasting our time arguing with you and we left. Mostly, we were pissed off by your stupid insistence that since you live on Maui, you don’t have to put up with tourists. Maybe you do live here, but you certainly don’t look like you were born here. All we can hope for is that you don’t represent the vast majority of people lucky enough to call Maui home.

The nanny press and the cartoon controversy Of course it was a provocation. In September, the editor of a right-wing Danish newspaper decided “to test cartoonists to see if they were self-censoring their work, out of fear of violence from Islamic radicals.” Though some declined, 12 artists accepted the editor’s invitation to make light of the Prophet Mohammed, and submitted work equating Islam with terrorism and the oppression of women, among other things. Five months later editor Fleming Rose

never actually appeared in any newspaper, “some depicting Mohammed as a pedophile, a pig or engaged in bestiality.” Newspapers in France, Germany and elsewhere further fanned the flames by reprinting the Danish drawings. Being provoked, as I tell myself when I’m sitting next to Sean Hannity, doesn’t justify reacting with violence. And as Kuwaiti oil executive Samia al-Duaij pointed out to Time, there are better reasons to torch embassies than over cartoons: “America kills thousands of Muslims, and you lose your head and with-

9/11, covers our millions of eyes to protect us from our own icky deeds. In Afghanistan in 2001, while covering a war that had officially killed 12 civilians, I watched a colleague from a major television network collate footage of a B-52 bombing indiscriminately obliterating a civilian neighborhood. “If people saw what bombing looks like here on the ground, “ he observed as body parts and burning houses and screaming children filled the screen, “they would demand an end to it. Which is why this will never air on American television.” Ugly truths come out one way or the other.

I CAN’T DECIDE WHO’S A BIGGER THREAT: THE DELUDED ISLAMISTS WHO HOPE TO IMPOSE SHARIA LAW ON WESTERN DEMOCRACIES, OR THE RIGHT-WING CLASH-OF-CIVILIZATION CRUSADERS WAVING THE BANNER OF “FREE SPEECH” has learned that cartoonists have good reason to watch what they draw. Thousands of demonstrators, furious at the publication’s violation of an Islamic stricture banning graphic depictions of the Prophet, marched through the streets of Cairo, Karachi, Istanbul, Teheran and Mehtarlam, Afghanistan, where at least five were killed by police. Gunmen took over the European Union office in Gaza. Mobs burned Danish flags and called for a Muslim boycott of Danish goods. Iran withdrew its ambassador from Copenhagen. Danes were ordered to flee Lebanon after mobs burned the Danish consulates in Damascus and Beirut, where they also trashed a Christian neighborhood. The Danish cartoonists, having been threatened with beheading, are presumably catching up on their Salman Rushdie while they weather the storm. Adding fuel to the fire, said The New York Times, were “a group of Denmark’s fundamentalist Muslim clerics... [who] took their show on the road” last fall, traveling around the Middle East showing a package that included cartoons that had

draw ambassadors over a bunch of cartoons printed in a second-rate paper in a Nordic country with a population of five million? That’s the true outrage.” I can’t decide who’s a bigger threat: the deluded Islamists who hope to impose Sharia law on Western democracies, or the right-wing clash-of-civilization crusaders waving the banner of “free speech”—the same folks who call for the censorship and even murder of anti-Bush cartoonists here—as an excuse to join the post9/11 Muslims-suck media pile-on. Most reasonable people reject both—but neither is as dangerous to liberty as America’s self-censoring newspaper editors and broadcast producers. “CNN has chosen not to show the [Danish Mohammed] cartoons out of respect for Islam,” said the news channel. “We always weigh the value of the journalistic impact against the impact that publication might have as far as insulting or hurting certain groups,” said an editor at The San Francisco Chronicle. “The cartoons didn’t meet our long-held standards for not moving offensive content,” said the Associated Press. While the Muslim world was raging over the Danish Mohammed cartoons, Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles received a chilling letter from the Joint Chief of Staff in reaction to his single-panel rendition of a quadriplegic veteran; if not for the nanny media’s slavish refusal to run photos of the real thing, would that abstract image have shocked anyone? While we’re at it, using prose to describe graphic images—as editors and anchormen are doing about the Mohammed imagery—makes as much sense as talking about the Rodney King police brutality video. “[Describing the cartoons without showing them] seems a reasonable choice,” editorialized The New York Times, a paper whose readers’ right to know apparently includes classified surveillance programs—but not cartoons. Toles “crossed the line” from appropriate commentary into outright tastelessness, complained the Joint Chiefs. Similarly, many Muslims say the 12 Danish cartoonists “crossed the line” when they indulged in blasphemy of one of the world’s major religions. Everyone supports the free speech they agree with. Which is why, in a nation with a truly free media, there is no line. To hell with the nanny media. Free speech is like a Ferrari: What good is it if you don’t use it or if you barely use it, only driving it in town, in stop-and-go traffic? It’s useless until you can head out to the Arizona desert and push it past 150 mph. Short of libel, slander and impersonation, anything goes—that is, if you believe in the First Amendment. While deciding what goes into the paper and the evening news, good journalists ought to be guided by only one consideration: Is it news? If the answer is yes, send it out. MTW

Arguments between Liquor Control Adjudication Board chairman Shigeto “Mustard” Murayama and rookie board member Lance Collins are pretty routine things at the monthly hearings. Collins will challenge some long-held board “rule”—that occasionally has no discernible statute backing it up— or challenge the deputy prosecuting attorney’s case, Murayama will look at him the way a parent looks at a misbehaving child, and then everything will proceed as if Collins never said a word. The Feb. 2, 2006 Adjudication hearing was different. At about two in the afternoon, during the first of two over-service cases involving Makawao restaurant and nightclub (and Maui Time advertiser) Casanova, public bitterness between Collins and Murayama seemed to reach a new crescendo. It started when Casanova General Manager Steven Burgelin tried to introduce in his defense the May 4, 2004 decision by Judge Joel August ordering the LC board to go back and review its then recent overservice conviction against Kahalui Ale House. Burgelin’s move seemed to send Murayama over the edge. “How did you know that there was such a thing?” he asked Burgelin. “I have a suspicion that this was presented to you.” Burgelin said he learned of August’s decision when he reviewed the minutes of the Dec. 1, 2005 LC hearing, when attorney Dave Jorgensen successfully got the decision entered into evidence for his defense of Moose McGillycuddy’s. But Murayama acted as if August’s order was a secret document, and shut Burgelin down. “That is not to be presented,” Murayama said. “If I’m challenged in court that’s fine.” That set Collins off, who demanded to know why the Adjudication Board kept “picking on” Casanova. “I don’t know why we’re treating them unfairly,” he said. “We’re playing games with their rights.” Normally quiet board member Tami Nascimento then exploded at Collins, demanding that he not include the rest of the board in his tirade about allegedly treating various licensees “unfairly.” Member M. D. Alborano said, “amen” while an LC investigator sitting in the back of the room quietly clapped in approval. Looking stunned by the response—the rest of the board rarely, if ever comes to his aid—Collins said nothing as Murayama moved the hearing onto other things. -Anthony Pignataro

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8 So today U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy—I didn’t know those guys went on tour—told a room full of our state’s best and brightest legal eagles that he’s “concerned” about the workload of the Hawai’i Supreme Court, which is currently so backlogged it rarely has time to hear oral arguments. “One way to prevent a court from being effective is to give it too many cases,” the Honolulu StarBulletin will quote him as saying in tomorrow’s edition. But apparently there’s a new law going into effect this year—that would be Act 202—that will lighten the workload and leave more time for the Supremes to listen to attorneys. Hurray!

THURSDAY, FEB. 9 Big news on mercury contamination! A recent study of 6,600 people nationwide by the University of North CarolinaAsheville’s Environmental Quality Institute found higher mercury levels in women of childbearing age than the federal government advises. The data also seemed to show, according to today’s Honolulu Advertiser, that people in Hawai’i and the Pacific region had higher mercury levels than people in the rest of the country. According to the Sierra Club, which backed up the research, most of this mercury is coming from coal plants—which are

coincidentally the Bush Administration’s energy priorities! See, George W. Bush has long promoted more coal use. He loves coal—nearly as much as he loves oil. On June 8, 2005, he cheered coal, telling a Washington audience, “We’re spending money on clean coal technology. Do you realize we’ve got 250 million years of coal?” Okay, so actually the nation only has about 250 years of coal reserves, but there’s no denying that Bush loves his coal. And he wants us to mine and process lots more, mercury be damned! In fact, his people are already working to up the mercury contamination levels the fed is willing to live with (read Cheryl Ambrozic-Mooz’s Aug. 25, 2005 story “Mercury on the Rise” to learn more).

harsh mandatory minimum sentences for violent felons, is similar but not quite identical to that which has proven so strikingly controversial in California. Over there, a third felony—any felony—will bring 30 years to life on a convict. But here, Bennett is proposing that the Three Strikes Law only kick in where violent felonies are concerned. “You should be looking out for the safety of the community,” Bennett told the Legislature according to today’s Advertiser. Don’t forget the big prison building firms, though for some reason our AG neglected to mention them. And that’s odd, because the way Hawai’i’s prisons are already so overcrowded that we’re shipping felons to the mainland for incarceration, a law like this will only make matters worse.

SUNDAY, FEB. 12 Once again, Lance Collins will run for the Maui County Council seat representing Kahului. The current Liquor Control Adjudication Board bad boy (read: guy who tries to look out for the rights of the accused, as opposed to the prosecution) tried this two years ago. Then incumbent Joseph Pontanilla beat him decisively but not overwhelmingly, 46.3 percent to 36.4 percent. Which wasn’t bad, considering that at the time Collins had no real public recognition to speak of, considering he’s still in his 20s. Then again, Pontanilla first got elected in 2002, and he doesn’t have much public

recognition either. Anyway, it’s good Collins made his announcement today so early in the election year, because it gives The Maui News eight full eight months to come up with a better headline than this 2004 wonder: “Pontanilla, Collins have different views on issues.”

MONDAY, FEB. 13 And now to update a recent story. Our Jan. 5, 2006 cover story “Infestation!” told how the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) have spent nearly four years trying to eradicate dreaded coqui frogs at the Kihei plant nursery located behind the Island Surf Building and owned by Dale Castleton. At first willing to allow MISC sprayers on his property, Castleton had in recent years become intransigent, even going so far as to say the frogs—the county’s top invasive species priority—were beneficial to his operation. In any case, personal intervention by Arakawa—yes, things got so bad the mayor himself saw fit to get involved— seems to have done the trick. Today, for the first time since 2004, Castleton has allowed MISC sprayers back on his property. Whether Castleton’s capitulation has to do with the propose 12-lot subdivision he wants to put on his property, who can say?

TUESDAY, FEB. 14 Uh oh: the Associated Press is reporting today that the state Legislature wants to slap big taxes on people who sell property within two years of buying it. The idea is to stop people from “flipping” properties, probably the biggest engine behind the state’s skyrocketing real estate prices. This is what makes America great: rampant real estate speculation is bad, but quail hunting with the Vice President is good. Yay! Anthony Pignataro wishes people would stop asking for contact information for the obviously non-existent Mac Nut Talent Agency “profiled” in our Feb. 9 issue. MTW

Cunning Lingle What Governor Linda Lingle said in her Jan. 23, 2006 State of the State Address about oil: “Weaning ourselves from oil won’t be cost-free, but we must do so if we want our economy to survive the next time the price of a barrel of oil increases by 50 percent.”

What she didn’t say: The best way to prove to state voters that she’s serious—as dead serious as a Republican like her can be—is for her to wean herself from oil. On Dec. 27, 2005, barely a month before her State of the State Address, her reelection campaign accepted a check for $1,000 from oil refiner Tesoro Hawai’i’s Noncandidate Committee. Nick Cave Subm Since rattling London’s post-punk rock scene in the early ‘80s with his band The Birthday Party, and reinventing himself with The Bad Seeds in the mid-’80s, Australian-born singer/songwriter Nick Cave has staked out a solid niche as a renaissance hero of goth music and violent deadpan imagery. In 1983 Cave co-wrote his first screenplay Ghosts... Of The Civil Dead in which he starred as an insane prisoner under the direction of music video director John Hillcoat. Now Cave has returned to screenwriting with a melodramatic post modern western titled The Proposition. Set in the Outback of 1880s Australia, the John Hillcoat-directed story involves two diametrically different outlaw brothers who are pitted against one another by Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone) a local law enforcer threatening to execute their younger brother unless Charlie (Guy Pierce) murders his brother Arthur (Danny Houston). Although Cave does not appear in the movie, he composed the film’s ethereal soundtrack (which comes out Feb. 21) with his longtime Bad Seeds collaborator Warren Ellis. In the cold of mid-January Manhattan I sat down with Mr. Cave at the Regency Hotel on Park Avenue to find out more about the significance of The Proposition.

MAUI TIME WEEKLY: Was this story based on any real events? NICK CAVE: No, it was all fake.

How did you come to write the script for John Hillcoat? I’ve known him for about 20 years, and for about 18 of them he’s been talking about the Australian western he’s going to make and that I would do the music. I’ve continued to work with him through that 18 years and eventually he commissioned a script that got written which was basically an American western kind of dumped in Australia and we both thought that that was not the sort of thing he wanted to do. And then he went, “Well fuck it, you write it then.” So, I did. I wrote it very quickly; it took three weeks to write because I refused to invest any more time in something that I basically knew would never ever get made. After a couple of difficult years he actually got it made.

How did the conventions of American westerns influence you in writing the script? I think John’s heavily influenced by the antiwesterns and revisionist westerns of the ‘70s— McCabe & Mrs. Miller and [Sam] Peckinpah’s stuff. But I think we felt that the average Australian had a different view of their history than the average American. I don’t think we see things so much in black and white, or good guys and bad guys, or villains and heroes. We have a much more conflicting, ambiguous shame-faced view of our history. I think we basically see it as a history of failure and incompetence.

What’s the source of that shame? If you look at a lot of stories like Ned Kelly and stuff like that; the antics they got up to are hilarious and foolish, and you see how kind of doomed they are. And so, our

mits His Proposition heroes are murky characters. So, we wanted to write a story where you go to a film and expect your radar to focus on who’s the one to sympathize with and who’s the one you want to see get their comeuppance at the end. This radar is confused throughout and sometimes you feel aligned to one character and then you shift your allegiance to somebody else, and that in the end they are a group of people in a place that they should never be and they’re being slowly dismantled by their own folly.

Were you developing or writing any of the music that you composed for The Proposition while you were writing the script? Yeah, the script has all of the musical cues in it. You know, into the violins and all of that sort of stuff. So, I was writing that as I was writing the script. I think the script is kind of musical.

You have a double DVD that’s just coming out Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds—Road To God Knows Where/Live at The Paradiso. Have you looked at them? No, I never look over my stuff. It just puts me off my game. I’d rather live in a kind of fantasy world that what I do is brilliant, and I don’t really ever want to kind of actually see it for what maybe it really is. So I never listen to my music, I never watch myself on TV or, especially, footage of myself live.

There is a lot of violent imagery in the movie, and anyone who knows your music would probably be familiar with it, so it wouldn’t be that shocking. How did John influence the violent tone of the movie? John is very interested in violence. If you see his first and second

films, he is certainly interested in the aftermath of violence and where violence takes you. I guess when John does violence he does it fast and brutal and it’s ugly and out of the way. Then he deals with the ramifications of that. That’s what he’s primarily interested in. People talk about this film being a violent film, which I find slightly irritating because the stuff that comes out of Hollywood are great ballets of violence. [Hollywood] scripts are being written for the express purpose of just having a whole lot of violence like Tarantino films which I find pretty unwatchable most of the time. So when John deals with violence, I think he deals with it in a realistic way and that it’s a fundamental part of the story. It was a violent time and a violent so-called ‘civilizing’ of the country.

You’ve written your scripts pretty quickly, but your music takes much longer. What is the difference four you between those two things?

To write a song and see it through to the end is really hard work. It’s not building a house or bricklaying or anything like that, but for me it’s a very difficult process and the hardest part of it is when you’re trying to start off a song. I’m sitting alone in my office and I’m trying to think about what I want to write about, and all I am is sort of exhausted by my own tiresome kind of opinions about things, and all of this bullshit that I’ve got in my head. It’s very difficult to get through that and actually call together some kind of a song. Whereas when I’m writing a script, when someone says write an Australian western, you don’t have to worry about how you feel about anything, or your own ideas about anything. You just sit there and get a few characters; the story has its legs.

Are you planning on writing more novels? No. I think once you’ve written a couple of film scripts, you can never write a novel again. I just never had any desire to write another one. Writing one in the first place was just a sort of perverse idea at the time. I don’t have any ambitions to be an author, really. For me, I just really want to be a songwriter and that’s what I’m primarily interested in. MTW

The Main Street Bistro menu offers that it serves “refined comfort food.” It’s a pretty accurate statement. The menu is divided into small plates ranging in price from $2.95 to $9.95, big plates $5.95 to $11.95 and bistro favorites running $9.95 to $13.95. The big plates section includes a wide variety of salads—the traditional Caesar to the more creative Chinese Chicken or Curried Roasted Turkey Salad. Sandwich lovers can choose from Grilled Mahi, Crab Cakes and “Mother’s Roast Beef,” to name just a few. Since I was in the mood for something light, I ordered the Fresh Local Greens topped with blackened Mahi. My friend was tempted by the

Turkey Sandwich but ultimately decided on the Blackened Chicken Pasta Salad served on a bed of greens. As we waited for our food to arrive, I watched the inner workings of the kitchen. The highlight of the show was watching the chef use a good-sized blowtorch to finish off one dish. Two large white plates piled high with salad arrived in no time. My friend’s salad bowl held colorful pasta noodles, tender chunks of blackened chicken, candied cashews, a generous helping of greens and avocado ranch dressing. He raved about the tender chicken pieces, the perfectly candied nuts and the freshness of the greens. He also ate much too fast, which he tends to do when the food is good. My fresh greens were tossed in the house vinaigrette, then sprinkled with the signature candied cashews and topped with a steaming piece of blackened Mahi. The fresh greens alone seemed enough to satisfy my hunger, but after I had a bite of the fish I knew I had the perfect salad combination. The Mahi had a dark spicy crust to the tender, juicy fish. If you’re looking for sophisticated and delicious food that won’t break the bank or just are just curious about how a real kitchen is run, don’t miss out on Main Street Bistro. Those arriving after 3 p.m. and before 7 p.m. closing can take part in their special tapas menu. No matter what you order then, get the onion rings. In fact, get the onion rings whenever you go—the huge pile of ultra-thin fried onions will whatever meal you have will be infinitely better. MTW

All I know is that her real life daddy is Maui Time Advertising Executive Brad Chambers, who spends his days getting the paper lots and lots of money so people like me can get paid every two weeks. He’s also a pretty big guy who I think once killed a man just to see him die. Long story short, what he likes, I like—and he really likes his daughter, the aforementioned Rachel Astrella. The Art of Movement Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC [DANCE] Twenty years ago, dance was a respected and thriving force in the arts community on Maui. And it was just the right time and place for a professional dancer and choreographer from New York to come and contribute to its success. David Ward has not only done that, but he has also managed to exalt the art form with his own creative vision, incorporating the rich cultural soup of dance that is prevalent in the Hawaiian Islands. What resulted is a 20-year career of outstanding performances, as well as a continued reverence for a movement that is, in his words, “more important than we realize.” This show is a retrospective of Ward’s 22 years of award-winning dance. Whale Day! Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Kihei [PARADE/FESTIVAL] I’ve always thought of humpback whales as love-y creatures. They always look like they’re smiling. They’re always hanging out together in pods and jumping around. The big ones look out for the little ones and it’s like one really big ohana. Apparently, the mother-calf relationship is a long-lasting one. And a humpback’s heart weighs an average of a whopping 430 pounds! No wonder they seem so lovey. Well, it only seems appropriate that we celebrate a day in their honor when they grace us with their presence this time every year. For the parade, there’s a $275 prize for best overall act/float. Other prizes for best musical presentation, funniest presentation, most creative individual or family, cutest keiki and best interpretation of theme. Speaking of rejuvenation, award-winning smallpiper Finn Moore and fiddler Sarah Hoy from Scotland will be providing foot-stamping jigs and reels for all us Celtic-appreciating folks on Maui. Moore is a master of pipes, and has been teaching at piping schools worldwide, as well as playing live shows. [TRAVELING ART EXPO] When protégés in the 1860’s wanted to get away from their tutors, they created a new style of painting by escaping to work “en plein air.” Maybe you’ve heard of them? Monet, Picasso and Cezanne. Ring any bells? This was also around the time of the inventing of lead-based paint. Interesting… The Invitational starts Sunday in Kapalua with all of the artists (12-3 p.m.) kicking off a series of painting that can be seen at the Village Gallery located at the Ritz-Carlton throughout the week. Then, for five days you may just stumble onto one of these artists, as they will spread over the island— you might recognize them by their erected canvas and poised paintbrush but also, they’ll have badges to identify themselves. Anyone can just go up and start asking questions. Yeah, I bet that doesn’t get annoying at all. Wednesday is the Jean Stern lecture at the Pioneer Inn, 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 is the Quick Draw, where the artists have a limited amount of time to create, will be held in Lahaina (9-11 a.m.). Then on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 25-26), you can get a look at all of the works back at the Village Gallery again (9 a.m.- 9 p.m.) A word to the wise, don’t eat the paint chips, just in case. Esteemed director/producer Frank Marshall (director on Alive, producer on Raiders of the Lost Ark) successfully retools a story suggested by the Japanese movie Nankyoku Monogatari (“Antarctica”). At a bottom-of-the-world U.S. National Science Research Base in Antarctica, resident guide Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker—2 Fast 2 Furious) cares for his prized team of eight sled dogs—six Huskies and two Malamutes. The dogs’ remarkable acting abilities admirably serve the bulk of the movie after a severe blizzard sends Jerry and his research team comrades on an evacuation that necessarily leaves the dogs behind to

Jerry and his best-loved dogs get a chance to prove their worth when Jerry’s old flame Katie (Moon Bloodgood) flies in scientist Davis McClaren (Bruce Greenwood—Capote) who hopes to discover pieces of a meteorite from Mercury that recently crashed into Antarctica. Against his better instincts, Jerry lashes up the lovable dogs to their sled and takes the eager scientist on a dangerous trek that nearly costs McClaren his life if it weren’t for the dogs and Jerry. An encroaching storm chases the team back to the research base where McClaren’s hypothermia and Jerry’s severe frostbite are made more urgent by an even bigger

approaching storm. The immediate need to evacuate the base leaves no room on their small airplane for the dogs to accompany the research team. Katie’s promise, to make a return run to retrieve the dogs, is dashed after the giant storm claims the area for the long ensuing winter season. Heartbroken at the prospect of losing his dogs, Jerry goes on a personal mission to arrange a return to the base to collect his animal pals that were left chained together in the snow. The movie shifts to a dog survival story as the quick-witted canines break from their chains and roam the barren Antarctic landscape in search of food. The dogs quickly adapt their teamwork skills to catch birds and to chase a threatening leopard seal from a giant whale carcass in the film’s most shocking moment of surprise. The story toggles between Jerry’s stubborn attempts at getting back to Antarctica and the survival tactics of the intelligent dogs whose unsure fate will necessarily take a toll. Days, weeks and months pass before Jerry and his caring human compatriots are able to return to discover the questionable condition of the dogs. The glacial atmosphere of the movie suits Paul Walker’s signature dry performance style that falls somewhere between Keanu Reeves and a young Jan Michael Vincent. Jason Biggs (Anything Else) adds some subtle comic color as the romantically inclined cartographer Charlie Cooper. But it’s the dogs that give the most inspired performances in an unconventional action movie that revels in animal instincts tested by the cruelest conditions Mother Nature has to offer. It’s doubtful that eight human beings could sustain themselves for so long with so little under those conditions. MTW

(Anthony Pignataro) BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE 2 - (PG13) - Comedy Martin Lawrence is back wearing the fat suit, once again needing to go deep undercover for the F.B.I. Isn’t it amazing how all a man needs to do is dress up like a woman in the movies, and all of a sudden he can run faster than a speeding bullet, leap over buildings in a single bound and kick just about anyone’s ass? Incredible. 99 min. (HK) BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - (R) - Drama, Romance, Western - Two cowboys work together, then become friends... and more? See how they deal with the blind hatred of society over a span of like 20 years. 134 min. (HK) THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA - (PG) Action-Adventure, Fantasy - This story follows the exploits in World War II England of four Pevensie siblings who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide and seek.” Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch. 140 min. (Kimberly L. Welch) CURIOUS GEORGE - (G) - Animation, Family How cute is this; Jack Johnson does all of the songs and Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore and Dick Van Dyke are the main voices. As if the little monkey needed any help getting cuter. That is just frickin’ precious. Oh yeah, you know who Curious George is, right? The monkey that gets in trouble all of the time. Multi-tasking Paul Walker stars in this new Disney movie about sled dogs. It takes place in Antarctica where a series of events leads to eight sled dogs being stuck out in a storm. Based on an article in National Geographic. Unfortunately, it’s cold weather, so Walker will probably be keeping all of his clothes on. (HK) FINAL DESTINATION 3 - (R) - Thriller, Horror Follows the same story line as the first two. High school girl predicts a tragic roller coaster accident, it happens. The people she convinced to not ride the ride now have to try and cheat death. 92 min. (HK) FIREWALL - (R) - Action, Thriller - Harrison Ford stars as the loving husband and father that just happens to work at a huge bank and be the software creator. Paul Bettany plays the villan that kidnaps Ford’s family in order to rob the bank. Although we’ve seen the basic story before, it looks like a good one. 100 min. (HK) GLORY ROAD - (PG) - Sports, Drama - Just in time for March Madness, this is the story of Texas Western College, the first school in college basketball history to field five African-American starters, and the troubles they encountered on their way to the NCAA finals. Stars Josh Lucas and Derek Luke. 106 min. (AP) GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK - PG - Drama - Written, directed and starring George Clooney. A chronicle of 1950’s real life conflict between newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy. This is during the Communist black listing period so it’s pretty hectic stuff. Also stars Jeff Daniels. And, it’s in black & white! 90min. (HK) HOODWINKED - (PG) - Animation, Family - Everyone remembers the story of Red Riding Hood, right? So this movie starts where the story ends. The police come and all the characters are questioned. Then comes the guessing game of figuring out what really happened. It looks cute. 81 min. (HK) THE LAST HOLIDAY - (PG13) - Comedy, Drama Queen Latifah plays a quiet and reserved woman who, upon a visit to the doctor, thinks she only has three weeks to live. This news pushes her to take risks she normally wouldn’t. Also stars LL Cool J. 108 min. (HK) THE MATADOR - (R) - Drama, Thriller - Okay, it’s supposed to be a drama thriller, but it looks like they want

to be a comedy. I don’t know. It’s Pierce Brosnan as a hitman who’s kind of over his job. He, by chance, makes friends with a regular Joe played by Greg Kinnear. When the hitman finds himself in a sticky situation, he goes to his new friend for help. 96 min. (HK) MATCH POINT - (R) - Drama, Thriller - A guy (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) marries a lovely young lady (Emily Mortimer) who happens to come from a filthy rich family. Everything is picturesque...until he meets and becomes enchanted by another woman (Scarlett Johansson). Then the scandolous activity begins. I can’t tell if this one is going to be like Fatal Attraction or something more original. Written and directed by Woody Allen. 124 min. (HK) NANNY MCPHEE - (PG) - Family, Comedy - Think ugly Mary Poppins, except with Emma Thompson in the lead role. Pretty routine stuff, really—nanny checks in, uses magic to tame naughty brats—but Thompson is also one of the screenwriters, so there might be something to it. Also stars Colin Firth. 88 min. (AP) THE NEW WORLD - PG13 - Adventure, Drama - One of the most famous romances of all time, John Smith and Pocahontas. I highly doubt Smith was as hot as Colin Farrell though. You all know the story, I just hope that it’s more historically correct than the Disney version. 150 min. (HK) PINK PANTHER - PG - Comedy - Steve Martin plays well-to-do Inspector Clouseau. The Pink Panther is an amazing diamond that has been stolen and the Inspector, through “unintentional” slapstick comedy and dumb luck, is trying to catch the culprit. Don’t forget about his hilarious accent. 92 min. (HK) UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION - (R) - Action-Horror - This sequel to 2003’s Underworld promises to be, at the very least, loaded with lots of bloody-blockbustin’ action, and well, sexy, sultry eye candy—in that dark and tormented, wicked kind of way! Kate Beckinsale stars as the vampy-vixen Selene, the vampire heroine who realized in the prequel she was fighting against the wrong evil. But with hybrid Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) at her side, they battle against this ancient war between vampire and lycan (werewolf), in a romance as forbidden as the hybrid himself. Oh, the agony! The heartache! The torture of being a vam—I mean lyca—er...hmm. 106 min. (Tallia Monterroso) WHEN A STRANGER CALLS - PG13 - Horror, Thriller - Remake of the 1979 movie that spawned one of my favorite urban legends. A babysitter keeps getting creepy calls, repeatedly being asked if she’s checked the children. Normally I wouldn’t put any expectations on a horror movie with a piddly little PG13 rating, but this one actually looks pretty freaky. (HK)

When Marley, Maui and Maori Meet Aotearoa’s number one reggae band, Katchafire New Zealand is a country in the South Pacific, 1,300 miles southeast of Australia. It’s approximately the size of California, with two main islands, simply called “North Island” and “South Island.” They have a parliamentary government, their main languages are English and Maori, and the population currently is 4,125,327. And along with beef, wool and wood, New Zealand’s biggest export these days seems to be Katchafire, an eight-piece reggae band from Hamilton.

Together since 1997, Katchafire caught the flame of success in 2002 with a New Zealand Music Award for Biggest-Selling Single with “Giddy Up.” They released five more singles from their debut album, Revival, which sold triple-platinum. Their follow-up album, Slow-Burning (2004), has garnered a local fan base with the radio hits “Seriously” and “Who You With,” which is also being played as a video on the local music television channel, OC16. Recently, I spoke with bass player Ara Adams-Tamatea and his cute accent, as he and his band mates were cruising through Oahu. MAUI TIME WEEKLY: So what are you all up to right now? ARA ADAMS-TAMATEA: We’re at Likelike, is it?—it’s not a strip club [laughs]. We just had omelets, hash browns, steak… Yeah, we played the Pro Bowl in Waikiki—it was our only show on Oahu but we’re looking forward to coming back later in the year. It’s our first time in Hawai’i, our first time in the states, our

first time in the northern hemisphere! Really? How exciting! What discoveries are you making? Everything is just new to us. Driving on the right side of the road is new. Every day is new—it’s amazing being here. Two of our members had to stay behind because of last minute family matters. They’re hating us right now. We’ll all go back a little more tan and with more stories. Oh well, their loss! Are there any similarities between Hawai’i and New Zealand? The Hawaiian people come up to us all the time—we’re Maori—and we look like Hawaiians. We came off the Hawaiian Airlines and the stewardess said, “Welcome home.” There’s an obvious connection with the language, too. But your weather is warmer. Hamilton is in the middle of a gully and it’s very foggy. I just read an interesting story about the creation of New Zealand that involved the demi-god Maui… Yeah, Maui—the same guy in your legend is the same guy in the stories of our culture, and it’s like that in a lot of the Polynesian Islands. It’s another common link in the language, appearance and culture. Trippy, eh? I also read that some of your favorite shows you’ve played have been at Sunsplash… The Sunsplash is a reggae festival we have every year in New Zealand. This past year, we opened for Third World, which was awesome. The year before that it was The Wailers, who’ve been a huge influence on reggae and our music. It was like a dream come true, playing with our heroes. Why do you think reggae is so popular here and where you’re from? I guess reggae’s always been popular here in Hawai’i. But in New Zealand, it goes in phase, then it was out for a while and now it’s really popular. I think Polynesian people really connect with the style of rhythm—I don’t really think about why. We just accept and do the best we can. MTW

Hollywood’s Lessons of Love

This past week’s been pretty stressful. My family, friends, work, mental and physical health—it’s all been a bit precarious and messing with my somewhat fragile emotional state. And so sometimes, when I’m feeling a little energetically depleted, I eschew my usual fare of heady indie, arthouse and/or foreign films for a depraved slew of gawdawful romantic comedies in which I can give the ol’ noggin’ a rest. Hmm… Romantic comedies: cerebral refresh or love lobotomy? The devil incarnate, I say! Anyway, this is what I’ve learned: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) Memorable Quote: “I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it that you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” A high school kid devises a plan to get the token bad boy to date the incorrigible sister of his crush, so that she’ll be allowed to go out, too. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, this teen flick starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger is actually one of the better romantic comedies out there. Lesson: Strong women do not need to be tamed; they simply need stronger men. Plus, Heath Ledger is really hot.

She eventually finds him in El Paso, makes friends with his lover, his neighbor and his lover’s grandpa, who then equips Jo with a protective ceremony that Jo must perform every night in front of the trailer of her wayward husband, who then does indeed commit her to a mental hospital. Lesson: Obsession and stalking shows you care. The Perfect Man (2005) Memorable Quote: “Attention shoppers, need a quick pick me up? Why don’t you head on over to our coffee corner and pick yourself up a half-caffe-caramel macchiato. But remember, coffee can be hot... it can have an intensity like you’ve never felt before... searing deep into your flesh... your tender... vulnerable... so easily hurt flesh. So, be sure to ask for a protective sleeve when you pick up your coffee... maybe ask for another one to slip over your heart. Thank you!” Stars Hilary Duff as a teenager (!) and Heather Locklear as her single mom. I know you don’t need to know anything beyond that but bear with me for a sec. The story revolves around Hilary’s character “Holly,” as she concocts a hare-brained matchmaking scheme because she’s tired of moving every time her mom falls for some loser. Although Chris Noth (Sex and the City’s Mr. Big!) stars as Holly’s model of the perfect man—he’s handsome, successful, single, he cooks, loves flowers, has a fabulously decorated apartment, and does crosswords in pen? Hello, he’s gay!—the movie’s premise hits rock bottom when, at one point, Holly is forced to maintain an intimate online chat as her mother’s fantasy lover, wherein her mother reveals painful and personal details about herself. Disturbing. Lesson: Dating your mom is complicated. Must Love Dogs (2005) Tagline: The hardest trick is making them stay. A divorced woman in her 30’s is pressured by her highly involved family to begin dating again, starting with the gross propagation of online personals ads. This movie might be one of the most contemptible of its kind. Did you see the tagline? Depicting women as desperate, deceitful, demanding damsels in distress? And I just don’t get it—I mean, check out the cast! You’ve got the lovely Diane Lane (Unfaithful), the king of ro-co himself, John Cusack, Elizabeth Perkins, Christopher Plummer, Dermot Mulroney and Stockard Channing. What the hell happened?! This just confirms my suspicions that all-star casts suck up all the juice of a movie, veritably guaranteeing an embarrassingly horrible flick. Lesson: When it comes to romance, the less people involved, the better.
