GENETICALLY ENGINEERED PLANTS ARE ALSO INVASIVE SPECIES It's positive that people are concerned about invasive plants. However, not enough people are aware of the Pandora’s Box which has been opened here in our state by firms experimenting in the open environment with GMO's-Genetically Modified Organisms.

Pharmcrops or biopharmaceuticals are plants or animals genetically altered to produce drugs or industrial chemicals.

These crops have the potential to irreversibly pollute our food supply through pollen drift and seed flow. Windbreaks do not prevent bees, butterflies or birds from spreading pollen.

As of July 2002, there were 36 open field test sites of biopharmaceuticals in Hawaii. A portion of the AIDS virus, blood thinners, and antibiotic resistant bacteria have been inserted into corn. On Kauai, the EPA found that growers of GMO corn were not taking precautionary measures to prevent pollen spread to conventional crops. I do not chance growing corn in my home garden.

Larry Bohlen, of Friends of the Earth, has been quoted as saying "Just one mistake by a biotech company and we'll be eating other people's prescription drugs in our corn flakes."

SAVE FEBRUARY 16 FOR THE MAUI PEACE PORTRAIT Save this date. Sunday afternoon, February 16, Maui Peace Action will hold the Maui Peace Portrait at Maui Community College. Music and speakers will start at 1pm, the Portrait will be taken at 2:30.

Everyone on Maui who wants peace is invited to gather for a group portrait, to be made into a beautiful large postcard. This postcard can be sent to world leaders, to our elected representatives, to friends and family, and will show how many people on Maui want to solve problems peacefully, and with backing from the UN, not by a headlong rush to war.

A war with Iraq will make America less safe and less secure. It will fuel immediate suicidal retaliation, and develop long-term hatred and justified fear of the U.S. throughout the world.

Other nations will say, "Do we have anything the U.S. wants? Are they planning to invade us next to "liberate" our people and control our region?"

The inspections are working. The arms inspectors say they need more time to do a good job. Why go to war, putting our military in danger and killing innocent civilians, before the inspectors have completed their job?

Gather with us on Sunday February 16 at MCC to ask for peace.

This is to you whining smokers out there who just can’t seem to accept the fact that smoking is a nasty habit, and that it bothers non smokers. Most smokers are taking it like an adult, and go outside to light up but some of you have been reduced to crybabies in dire need of a pacifier and a new pamper.

Let me illustrate this scenario for you. My girl and I are out for a nice dinner and the hostess seats us at the table upwind of yours. I relax my sphincter, and proceed to rip off a series of foul stinkers, silent, but deadly. After a few seconds everyone starts looking around. Is this going to affect your dining pleasure? Are you going to complain? After all, is it not more socially acceptable to spew carcinogenic stinking smoke from the oral orifice than it is to generate reeking fumes from the anal orifice?

So the next time one of you whiners fires up a cancerette, and the smoke goes in my face, I’ll tear off a nice ripe piece of cheese, you can smoke your butt and smell mine, and then we’ll see where the conversation goes.

I read where some parents on Oahu are concerned about portable classrooms.

They seem to think that the portables are an eyesore. Some parents also seem to think they are not necessarily conducive to learning. These parents are missing out on a little something here. First of all, there aren't too many kids who look forward to being in a classroom, portable or not, and that in itself is not conducive to learning.

Second, a school is not supposed to be an attractive architectural statement.

One look at Maui District Students' test scores shows that the vast majority of them are not meeting the state minimum. Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island? More of the same. If we are going to improve test scores, maybe these parents should focus on what their kids are learning and not the "portability" of their classroom or the way it looks. The most pleasant classroom in the world won't teach a kid who doesn't care.

One parent even went so far as to say her kid deserved to learn in a "real" classroom. Just what exactly a "real" classroom entails is yet to be determined. I remember taking field trips when I was in school.

Doesn't that mean the outdoors is a real classroom? What about being in a laboratory? That's a real classroom, isn't it?

What we need is a real effort to demand learning. Not encourage it, but demand it.

And while a conventional school set-up might be nice to think about, when there is the kind of population ebb and flow we have, portable classrooms might be something we have to live with.

HOW ABOUT SOME PRIORITIES?

With the advent of the color-coded warning system, what was meant as an aid to Americans has now aided someone else - it has served as a weapon for terrorists.

Rather than spend the money and time on recruiting and training suicide attackers, all AlQaeda has to do is increase the volume of their communications traffic and the United states will see that as a threat, hence the increase in the nation's terror threat recently. People will stay indoors, they will be much more afraid to travel, and the American economy will suffer.

It's ironic, though, that rhetoric heard in the aftermath of 9/11 called for exactly what we are seeing today - forewarning. People across the nation demanded to know why the government didn't see this coming and why the public wasn't warned. Can you imagine the reaction the color coded-terror warning system would have gotten if it had been implemented before 9/11?

The President goes on TV daily to warn the nation and the world of imminent threats that Saddam Hussein poses to the world. But nobody listens. Nobody is stopping to consider that President Bush just might be right.

Through defectors such as Hussein's former son-in-law, who ran the germ weapons program, the U.S. knows that Iraq is producing huge quantities of biological weapons, and yet there are still those people who think Hussein deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Saddam Hussein cannot lob scud missiles filled with anthrax or ricin at the mainland U.S. That much we know. What we don't know is how involved he is with terrorist groups that do have the ability to bring that kind of germ warfare to the United States. A man in his position who is willing, is a man who is able.

And if we think Osama bin Laden is dangerous because he is crazy and has access to hundreds of millions of dollars, Hussein's danger rating should be off the charts. If we support a war against bin Laden, why shouldn't we support a war against Hussein?

On Valentine's Day of 2001, I was working at my computer and decided to go online and talk with people around the world on a Yahoo Chat Line. While in the website, I noticed that a lady from Costa Rica was writing to people. Surfing is in my blood and I had thought many times about taking a surf trip to Costa Rica, so I jumped in the conversation and wrote "cris24" that I was from Maui and was looking for a lady to show me the beaches and surf spots in Costa Rica, should I decide to make the journey. Cris answered back that she didn't surf but loved to go to the beach. A few

more sentences were written and then I gave Cris my direct e-mail address over the chat-line.

This probably accounted for an increase in the junk mail I received, but it also lead to Cristina Munoz writing me directly.

At first we wrote about the beauty of Maui and what living in Hawaii was like and about life in the Central Valley of Costa Rica and the nature and beaches of Costa Rica. We wrote each other a few times per week the first month and started to find out about each other’s interests and life history. We also exchanged photos via e-mail. In March, I called Cristina on the phone and was immediately addicted to the

sound of her voice and was impressed with how well she spoke English. Cristina was equally attracted to the sound of my voice on the phone. The frequency of emails became almost daily after the first phone conversation between us. By April we started to mail small presents and photos through the postal service.

We were becoming close friends and learning many things about each other’s country.

In August of 2001, Cristina wanted to visit Hawaii for a two-week vacation but was denied a tourist visa by the U.S. Embassy. The consulate officer said that because she only had a "modest income" she did not have enough economic stability to receive a tourist visa. I was quite disappointed that she would not be able to visit so I called and wrote the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and requested the decision be reviewed. The late Patsy Mink and Governor Cayetano's office both wrote to the embassy and asked that Cristina be granted a tourist visa to visit Hawaii, but the embassy insisted she was too poor to be allowed a tourist visa.

On September 11th, unfortunately, we all found out that terrorists with money are given visas by the State Department while people with modest incomes are denied visas.

We were starting to really care about the future of each other and realizing that what started as an internet friendship was becoming much more. As a substitute teacher, I knew there would not be a chance to visit Costa Rica until the next summer and Cristina would not get another vacation from her job as an International Operator until June of 2002 either. Cristina was sad about not being able to come visit and be with me. She told me that maybe I should find someone else. We were uncertain about our future and wondered if we would ever see each other in person. We continued to write e-mails, talk on the phone, and send small presents and photos through the mail.

Several months went by and we began to feel we were falling in love even though we had never been together in person. I felt the strongest emo-

tion of love and passion that I had ever felt in my life. Cristina's personality is so magnetic to me. I realized that I wanted to share life with her more than anything else. That is when I asked Cristina to marry me and she said, "yes". We decided that Cristina would move to Maui after we were married. On Valentine’s Day of 2002, I received a dozen roses with a handwritten card from Cristina. I was “blown away”. That is a Valentine’s Day I will never forget.

The plans for us to be together were finalized late in 2002. I would fly to Costa Rica on June 8 and a wedding was planned for June 16. The moment I saw her, I ran to her and we hugged and kissed for the first time. It was a magical moment for both of us and an instant realization that the bond and love that had developed from 5,000 miles apart was sincere and true.

The process of applying for a spouse and child visa began at the same U.S. Embassy that had denied Cristina a tourist visa the year before. We had everything in order and went to the embassy with all the needed documents.

We had two interviews and paid over $1,300 to the U.S. Embassy in fees and doctor examines with U.S. approved doctors. By August 25, 2002, the embassy still had not approved the visa for Cristina and Felipe and I had to leave Costa Rica to return to work for the Hawaii Public Schools. It was very hard for me to leave Cristina in Costa Rica not knowing when and if the U.S. Embassy would grant her a visa to come live in Hawaii. Happily for us, the Embassy granted her a visa in late September and Cristina and her 5-year-old son, Felipe, arrived on Maui October 25, 2002.

Cristina is working and Felipe is attending school and they are very happy on Maui. This Valentine's Day marks two years of communicating between us and that communication is what built our deep love for each other. We both are the happiest we have ever been in our lives and are truly thankful to be celebrating this Valentine's Day together. Perhaps you single people will find the love of your life this Valentine's Day.

NEWSOFTHEWEIRD LEAD STORIES Among the rap lyrics penned by condemned murderer John Taylor, 38 (convicted of killing five New York City Wendy's employees in a 2000 robbery), during his two days on the lam before his arrest (and revealed by prosecutors in January) (Taylor's spelling): "so now you know how I go / They got my face on the worlds most wanted show / on chanel five showing live / you'll think I'm famous / I'm airing world wide / I'm a stick up kid so swift you see / in and out like 1 2 3 / I said give me the doe you say no, no? / Is it no you said stick some lead to your head / guess what punk now your dead / with all that blood bursting out your Head."

Taylor now says he's sorry for the killings.

READER'S CHOICE If it hadn't been for the metal detector at the Regina, Saskatchewan, airport, the woman might still wonder why her stomach pains, following June 2002 surgery, were persisting. When the detector relentlessly beeped but no metal could be found on her, she scheduled an X-ray and discovered that a 12-inch-long surgical retractor had been left inside. (A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January estimated that 1,500 items were left inside surgery patients in 2001.)

BY 2008, AN OLYMPIC SPORT Matthew and Elaine Sweetapple recently invented a "game of skill, power, speed and endurance," consisting of a biodegradable ball (smaller than a golf ball) placed in a urinal, to be disintegrated by a urinator (either alone or in "competition"). The product, Peeball, was launched for sale (equivalent of $1.70) late in 2002 by Great Britain's Prostate Cancer Charity, which hopes the novelty will call attention to its cause, in that players with prostate problems are typically poor at the game. Player strategies, basically, are (1) direct stream and (2) intermittent stream.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT In December, the British subsidiary of the German firm Condomi selected 10 men from among 10,000 college students across Great Britain to be condom testers, paying them a rate of about $170 per term to test for comfort and convenience, with unlimited supplies (of condoms, not partners). Newcastle University law student Dave Chapman, one of the 10, told a reporter in December that he thinks the assignment is "to get through as many as humanly possible."

RECURRING THEMES More People a Little Too Chummy With Animals: In November 2002, the Appeals

Court of Massachusetts rejected a lawsuit by Robert and Anne Krasnecky of Ware, Mass., for "loss of companionship" of their seven pet sheep, which were killed by a neighbor's dog.

The court said "companionship" in the law referred only to humans, even though the Krasneckys considered the sheep their "babies," spent six or seven hours a day with them, gave them names, celebrated their birthdays with special food and balloons, baked snacks for them, bottle-fed them, and allowed them the run of their house.

THE DISTRICT OF CALAMITY In January, a 72-year-old woman was found dead in her Washington, D.C., apartment the day after a police officer had searched the apartment and failed to notice the woman's leg sticking out from underneath a bed. (Two months earlier, D.C. paramedics had bagged the apparently dead body of a 49-year-old woman, but later, three morgue employees said they detected a slight pulse; however, she died for real a few minutes later.) On another matter, The Washington Post reported in October that the District's payroll office, having already spent $20 million on a new computer system that never worked, had just spent another $14 million to transfer all the records back to the old, antiquated system, which led the Post to speculate that the squandered $34 million is probably more than the entire D.C. jail population combined had ever stolen.

INTER-SPECIES UPSETS A cockfight handler, about to release his rooster into the ring to do battle, with both birds outfitted with razor-sharp steel spikes on their legs, was killed when the rooster slashed the man's thigh and groin, causing him to bleed to death (Zamboanga, Philippines, January). And a 43-year-old man died of a gunshot wound shortly after telling his wife he was going to use his rifle to club to death the couple's Chinese shar-pei dog because it had bitten him; with no other explanation apparent, police suspect that the rifle accidentally discharged during the clubbing (Winchester, Va., January).

ALSO, IN THE LAST MONTH ...

Goalkeeper Richard Siddall stayed on the field for 10 minutes after everyone else had left because the fog that caused the soccer game's cancellation was so thick that he didn't see the players leave (Sheffield, England). Toki Holden, 38, was arrested and her day-care center closed when state investigators accused her of giving a crying 5-month-old boy a bottle spiked with Ny-Quil (Durham, N.C.). Paul and Hannelore Richter said they have been keeping a pet eel in their family bathtub for 33 years (transferred to a bucket when the tub is otherwise in use), first because their kids begged them to and later because the Richters feared it could no longer survive in the wild (Bochum, Germany).

the perplexing artwork of mark mothersbaugh In the 1970’s and 1980’s, the experimental band/art-concept, DEVO, represented a philosophical divergence from the norm - the norm of the masses and also the “norm” of the radical. Blurring the lines between the establishment and the experimental, Mark Mothersbaugh, DEVO’s front man, reflects this indefinable juxtaposition not only in his music, but in his two-dimensional art as well.

Mothersbaugh’s fine art imagery is as simple as it is perplexing. A blend of computer generated graphics, found imagery, paint, ink, and embossing, his work somehow makes one believe that even comic book characters have to wipe their own asses in the morning.

While most of the population is dulled by the protocol of daily life, Mothersbaugh is always exploring; mixing and matching hints, innuendoes and suggestions via one media or another.

He considers himself an observer and his art is “One man’s view on culture.”

In September 2002, Mothersbaugh had his first solo show in over a decade at LUMP Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. The show was a huge success, and has inspired Mark to continue showing his “Postcard Diaries.” In November, Mothersbaugh was invited to show work in the ultra hip Juxtapoz Magazine 8th Anniversary Group Show at Track 16

When Mothersbaugh is not touring, you can find him in his Los Angeles based Mutato Muzika headquarters, where his offices and studio are housed in a pistachio green building shaped like a flying saucer. It is here that Mothersbaugh uses his musical magic to compose scores for movies, TV, and commercials. Not traditionally trained as a musician, he taught himself to read and write music after breaking into the industry, and now composes for and directs 110 piece orchestras. Pee-Wee's Playhouse, The Rugrats, MTV's Liquid Television, and The Royal Tenenbaums are just a few of the projects that he has scored.

Mothersbaugh’s artistic life took flight in his twenties, when, to avoid being drafted for Vietnam, he enrolled in Kent State University and earned a degree in fine art.

In 1972, Mothersbaugh and fellow art student Jerry Casale formed DEVO, taking its name from the theory of De-evolution the idea that instead of evolving, mankind is actually regressing. The whole concept simply started as a way of entertaining themselves. “It made the

sound of things falling apart.” But then came the infamous Kent State - National Guard killings of 4 student protesters, and suddenly their message held a more immediate relevance As it was, “electronic noise” in the early 70’s, in Ohio, was difficult for most locals to appreciate. “You’d have these long-haired factory workers relieved to be back from Vietnam, and here were some crazy asses on stage provoking them and calling them subhuman. They’d get pissed and act out.

We’d have fistfights constantly. People paying us to quit. Getting beat up. The police stopping the shows.” Needless to say, the band left Ohio and tried their luck in NYC, where they pulled up in front of Max’s Kansas City and began playing on the sidewalk.

DEVO's big break came with their short film, The Truth About DeEvolution, which won a prize at the 1976 Ann Arbor Film Festival. After seeing the film, both David Bowie and Iggy Pop took interest in the five-some and connected DEVO to their first producer, Brian Eno. Their debut album, “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO!” became an underground hit.

Throughout the DEVO years, Mothersbaugh also created his fine art, pumping-out several of his postcard-

style creations nearly every day. “Since I never did them to show people, I didn’t care if I mixed mediums or if they got filthy or stupid. I like stuff that was kind of stream-of-consciousness. I’d do it, then I’d question, ‘Where did that come from?’ I’ve been making them for about 30 years now.”

Mothersbaugh’s prints are disquieting, visual conundrums; our minds are not quite able to fill in the blanks or connect all the dots. He gives us no answers, only a curious tension. Short circuiting logic, yet leaving an impression, something memorable and ironic.

We interviewed this cult icon, visual artist, and successful musician via email. Here’s what he had to say:

Q: Did you do visual art as a child; were you involved in anything original/creative previous to Kent State?

A: “When I was a kid, I was legally blind, but the problem was correctable.

I didn’t know I had the problem till I was 7 years old…when I got glasses. I saw trees, clouds, jet streams, etc, all for the first time ever! I immediately fixated on drawing these new additions to my life, and got pretty good at it. My teachers saw how well I drew these things, and started complimenting me on it. That was a defining moment for

me. I hadn’t received many compliments like that until then.”

Q: Most people think of you as a musician, however DEVO is more than a group of musicians. Describe DEVO as the whole art concept that it is/was.

A: “ DEVO was a product of 5 concerned citizens from Akron trying to make sense out of that they saw happening in the world around them.”

Q: When you were there in the early days, in the scene, before you went big, did you know that you were making history in that moment? Tell us what was the turning point between artistic obscurity and a career.

A: “We certainly always thought we had important info to share. The whole project reached critical mass in ‘75/’76 when we made our first films & recordings. We knew we had something then.”

Q: You & DEVO are internationally recognized cult Icons, what is fame like?

A: “The funny thing is, it all seemed to be over very quickly. Fame didn’t seem to last that long. We had a moment, but barely enough time to enjoy it.”

Q: What is the one moment that stands out in your 20+ years in the limelight?

What has been the pinnacle so far?

A: “The most exciting time period in being an artist in my life was back in ’77, when we were playing clubs on the east & west coasts, with lots of excitement surrounding us. We were the buzz, and everyone was talking. We felt like nothing could stop us, and we were very unaware of all the things that could go wrong. We had no money, but it felt like we were at the center of an important movement.”

Q: You’ve met many talented and wellknown people in “show biz” and the arts, who do you respect the most? Who blows your mind?

A: “I’m always most fascinated with the folks who are at ground zero during formative periods in art and expression. Examples are Andy Warhol, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc. In most

cases, their careers lasted longer than my fascination, but I still respect them for what they were a part of.”

Q: Do you collect Art? A: “I don’t really collect other people’s art, but I do collect found art… My pile of art is basically a concept & image bank. I collect things that I consider to be art, whether it was created to be art or not.”

Q: What do you think is the most important thing happening in art today?

What’s the next great movement? Any words of advice to give to underground artists of today?

A: “I like Islamic Political art. I’m also interested in the whole JUXTAPOZ magazine scene, because I can relate to the lowbrow aesthetic. I’m not really sure what the next art movement is, and I can only give this advice to hopeful artists: It doesn’t matter what you do… just do one thing that is so good that people can’t ignore it.”

Q: Most people separate things like music and art. Tell us how you feel about the relationship between the different arts and the relationship or differences between art and commercial work. Or, the line between art and craft.

A: “I had high hopes in the early 70’s…before MTV…that music television would be much more than it became - a home shopping network for record companies. We thought it had the potential to be much more. That said, I grew up being turned on by technology, and the upside of capitalism. I was influenced by artists who liked to blur the borders between commerce & art.

Art has a long history of paying its dues to wealth & royalty, and I see capitalism as a way to liberate art for the people. Technology provides access to the arts for everyone these days.”

Q: We know you have done ads for some of the worlds most loved/despised corporate giants like McDonalds and Target. Do you believe in these companies? If so, why. And if not, what is it

like to work for them regardless?

A: “The one thing that should’ve been learned by the hippies & the punks is that anarchy is easily co-opted by fascists. Subversion is the only real way to affect change, hence the success of Viet Kong & Jihad warriors. There’s no better place to affect change than from within the belly of the beast. Devo always thought of themselves as an enema for a constipated society.”

Q: How do you see yourself today? Is your life today anything like you imagined it would be, in art school…as DEVO was getting started? What do you see for your future?

A: “I see myself as part of a world that is far more devolved than I had expected. I thought that everyone would be taking smart drugs, and that technology would’ve made the world a better place by now.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Devolution moved quicker than we ever expected, and things are far more devolved than we ever could’ve imagined.”

Once again the 3rd annual Hula Bowl Surf Classic was the highlight of the week for some of the best college football players in the country, who braved the waistto-chest high surf at Launiupoko Park.

Outside of Saturday's Hula Bowl football game at Memorial Stadium, the biggest wipeouts and high impact collisions happened on Thursday at Launiupoko.

Despite many pleas like, "No way man, I ain't goin' in those waters, they's sharks out there!” 45 big brave souls paddled out to the line-up under the watchful eye of Maui Waveriders instructors Tommy Castleton and Alden Paoa, Hawaiian Ultimate Advertures instructor Art Manzano, and local musician Ross Kaaa.

"This was the most enthusiastic bunch of football players we've ever had," said Kim Ball, the event organizer. "Scott Trudon (the announcer) had to call some of them out of the water so other guys could use their boards."

There were many stand-outs including Leotis Palmer, of the Air Force Academy, the top surfer from the Kai team, and Ricky Manning, Jr., of UCLA, the top surfer from the Aina team.

The only disgruntled surfer appeared when the results were announced. Shane Hall, a 6'6", 305-pound tackle from South Carolina, didn't understand why he didn't walk away with the top Aina trophy. In addition to catching eight waves, he

dropped his shorts going backwards, exposing his backside, mooning the judges. Hall walked over to the judges afterward and asked, "Who judged this thing?" The three judges; surfboard-builders Matt Kinoshita and Roger Anderson and long-time contest official Joni Demello, all pointed to each other. Kinoshita finally explained that Manning had the longest ride of the day while Anderson whispered, "we actually deducted for the moon".

The event was made possible with the help of the following: Hi-Tech Surf Sports, Trilogy Excursions, Quiksilver, Kimo’s, Lahaina Trophy, Maui Waveriders, Hawaiian Ultimate Adventures, and Dragin’ Ink.

Hula Bowl Renovation “This year’s attendance was down a little bit, and we made some mistakes, but all in all I’m very pleased with it,” said Dick Shaller, new owner of the 2003 Hula Bowl, held on Maui.

Dick was in Seattle this past summer when he got a call from Lennie and Marcia Klompus, previous owners of the Hula Bowl. “They asked me if I was interested in owning a football bowl game. I didn’t even have to think. Of course I was. Not only do I love the sport, plus had been associated with Hawaii’s bowl games for over 12 years, but I also saw it as a chance to get back to Hawaii.”

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, a Snow Belt, Dick saw Hawaii for the first time back in 1965 when he was in the army and was sent to Scofield. “I fell in love with Hawaii, and when I got out of the service and went back to Buffalo with a job in Broadcasting and Television, I sat back there for eight years and thought, ‘I wonder if I could do this in Hawaii?’”

In the 1970’s, he packed up his family, came to Hawaii, got a job in Broadcasting and stayed here for the next 35 years. In those 35 years he managed three TV stations including KITV, KIKU (KHNL) and KHON. Through his positions at the television stations he became involved with the Aloha and Oahu Bowls as well as with the Hula Bowl.

About the same time the Hula Bowl moved to Maui, Dick received a job offer from Paramount Pictures and moved to Seattle. “But we kept in contact,” he says.

Then in 2001, the Klompuses sold the

Aloha Bowl. “It didn’t do well, and was taken over by ESPN and moved to Seattle and is now known as the Seattle Bowl. The Oahu Bowl doesn’t exist anymore, but there is a new bowl called the Hawaiian Bowl, which is handled by the University of Hawaii and ESPN. The Hula Bowl is the only one of the original three that is left intact.

“Lenny Klompus called me in July and asked me if I was interested in owning the Hula Bowl. They wanted to do an ownership change because he wanted to spend more time on the Linda Lingle campaign.”

Everything was finalized by August 1st and Dick arrived in Maui on September 1st, with only 4 months to go before kick-off.

“There are three main ways to finance the game; sponsorship, ticket sales, and the radio and television rights.” For the radio and television rights, Dick has ESPN, but the last corporate sponsor was Rivals.com and when they suddenly went under, another corporate sponsor hadn’t come on board yet. “We’re working on that one now, and we didn’t handle our ticket sales as well as we expect to in the future.” The stadium holds 20,000 fans, “but we only distributed 10,000 – 12,000 tickets this year. So that is a second area where we can improve.”

All in all, Dick and the Hula Bowl staff are very happy with Maui. “We had such good support, especially from the Maui Visitors Bureau, we had no trouble with permits and such things, and the support we got from Rick McCall and his group setting up the field etc., well, we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Even ESPN remarked nationwide about the condition of the field. “They brought the guru of turf management and field preparation in

The Hula Bowl has its special place in football bowl games. It is the very last of all the college bowl games. This is significant because until the Hula Bowl is played, none of the college players can be drafted for the NFL. The Hula Bowl is the final chance for a player to shine for the scouts and the draft.

The Hula Bowl is also the last college game that the college seniors will play.

“Being selected to play in the Hula Bowl is a way of honoring players and a reward to them for many years of football well played,” explained Shaller. There is a Selection Committee comprised of 5 top coaches:

Coach Tom Bass (Chairman), Coaches Hayden Fry, George Perles, Spike Dykes, and Lavelle Edwards. The American Coaches Federation chooses the two top coaches of the year to coach the All Star Team. Coach Larry Tressel from Ohio State has already agreed to coach Hula Bowl 2004.

Anything new for the future? “We hope to expand our base with the NFL. Also we have a connection with Japan that was started two years ago. This year they were actually suited up and able to play. We were as excited as the players were! I’d like to sell out the stadium next year. It’s a great game.” And since Dick and his staff have twice the amount of time, they might do just that.

Some days go by in a blur of responsibilities and obligations, but on others I find the time to slow down and appreciate the wonderful place that I live. Where else can you find such a mix of people, culture, and natural beauty? And of course, food.

So Maui seeps into me as I roll down Hwy. 311 in the back of a pickup, the late afternoon sunlight strobing through the trees.

I’m headed towards Isana, an out of the way sushi bar I used to haunt years ago.

It’s a two-story building next to the Maui Lu on South Kihei Rd. with a spacious dining room, sushi bar, and karaoke room upstairs. Our seats at the end of the

sushi bar afford us a picture perfect view of the sun setting into the crystal blue waters just offshore. I know what swims in those waters and I’m gonna eat me some, as fresh and glisteningly raw as I can get.

We start out with a double round of Salmon Nigiri, which basically means we’re each going to eat four finger-length slices of rich, buttery, velvety salmon garnished with a dollop of rice and a touch of wasabi. Sure, salmon never swam in these waters, but it’s important to appreciate other cultures too, including their waters. Right?

And besides, raw salmon is good for pupus and dessert. We have to celebrate it.

Sunsets, Singing & Sushi - What Could Be Better?

ritual, the sushi chef is busy preparing our next course. First to come out is a dish known simply as “Dynamite”. It’s a piping hot boat full of Scallops, Zucchini, and Mushrooms baked in a rich cream sauce. You have to poke through the oven-browned surface to reach the tender morsels within, and the explosion of flavor you’ll get is well worth it.

A Salmon Avocado Roll is next. Yes, that’s right! Rich, creamy raw salmon paired with rich, creamy avocado slices. What else could be better? This job will probably be the end of me, but hey, somebody’s gotta do it.

The Rainbow Roll is a piece of culinary artistry. It’s an inside-out California Roll with slices of Ahi, Salmon, white fish, and Avocado wrapped sideways around the top in a colorful array. Multi-colored Caviar crown the dish in vibrant splendor. I truly feel at one with Maui now, eating food inspired by its rainbow misted mountain pools while watching the amazing sunset create colors all its own.

I miss the presence of owner/operator/sushi chef Andy, a kind Korean man who always asked after the health of my mother. It’s the Korean way, and I appreciate this touch of my home culture here on Maui. Of course, what I really want is to eat good Korean pupus in the middle of my sushi-fest, and at Isana I can do exactly that.

My first request is Kim Chee. It’s good with anything. Really. I’ve eaten it on pizza, cheeseburgers, and bagels with cream cheese. You can’t go wrong, and here it’s fresh and done right.

The fried Man Doo is the Korean version of the pot-sticker. It’s steamed then lightly crisped with a meat and vegetable filling and served with a Soy-Chile-Vinegar Dipping Sauce. There’s a big difference between fresh, hand-made Man Doo and the pre-fab kind, and I can tell by the texture of the wrapping that this is the real thing.

Isana has an upscale oriental style dining room that offers a full menu of classic Korean Cuisine. A large, room-length table in front of the picture window features Yakiniku, which is the Korean way to cook your own meats at the table, on little inset burners. There’s a different element to your dining experience when you do some of the cooking yourself. You not only get the sounds and smells of spiced meats searing right in front of you, but you always have a hot bite of Kal Bi or Bulgogi to accompany the spread of rice, Kimchees, and various side dishes that come with your meal.

Isana is located at 515 S. Kihei Rd. near the Maui Lu. Try them out next time you feel like getting out of the daily grind and into a relaxing sunset, fresh sushi, and a new cultural experience.

Crios -de- Susana Balbo 2002 Torrontes, Cafayate $14.99

This week we are going south - South America to Cafayate, Argentina, to be exact, where they are having great success with many different varietals, old and new, from around the world.

Susana Bolba is a very creative and experienced wine maker of 22 years from Argentina. She created her own wine label, under her name, dividing it into two: the parent (the reserve wines), and her Crios wines, meaning “offspring”. These Crios wines are the wines she has created with great care and are meant to be enjoyed in their youth. The grape varietal in this week’s wine is the Torrontes and is thought to be originally from Northern Spain’s Malvasia. While Torrontes is the most widely planted white grape in all of Argentina, it is thought to grow best in Cafayate because of its high elevation (5000 ft. on average) and its dry, sandy soil combined with its radiated sunny days and cool nights. This combination brings out the highlights of the Torrontes potential.

The Torrontes grape is similar to the Viognier, fruity but dry with aromas of flowers. This wine was made with no oak involved and has a mineral quality also. It is best enjoyed with grilled seafood or a soft cheese. Try it with something that is smoky, like a soft Gouda cheese or some of that famous smoked Maui marlin. Aloha!

Gin Blossoms Interview A (Shocking) Look at the Mid-90’s Pop Gods In the spring of 1992, my buddy Chris and I were driving cross-country in my 67’ VW bus, making stops where friends and friends-of-friends lived, piecing together what would be a month long trip from San Diego to Atlantic City. Starting somewhere in Phoenix, I began to make a collection of songs, supplied by those people along the way who we met, stayed with, partied with or heard someone say, “you gotta hear this.” One by one, the songs were creating a mix tape that would retrace our path, the people and places we visited.

Detouring into south Florida in an attempt to include as many friends as pos-

sible, we were warmly welcomed by the West Palm Beach sunshine and our good friend Tom, who was residing next to an expansive horse farm. He shared a house with a co-worker named Melanie who was rather indifferent to our presence but Tom insured us she wasn’t being rude, just very wrapped up in her studies.

We had a nice stay, some small surf, a couple of days on the beach and, the day before we left, we were having some beers by the pool. I remembered the tape, and since Tom wasn’t around, I mentioned that we should ask Melanie to put something on it for us. Chris said something about this being “Skynrd country” and wanted some photos of the horses instead. Meandering

around the property we found a horse grazing near the shoulder-high wood fence.

“Pet him,” Chris said, “but watch out for the electric fence.”

“The what?” was all I got out, as I turned towards the camera, buzzed and smiling, the horse pressed my arm into the wire and, “AAAAAAHHHH!” shocking the living shit out of me and the horse. On my back, in the dirt, I looked up to see Chris, hysterically laughing but concerned, holding the camera up saying, “I got that!” The horse bolted, bucking and shaking it off and I staggered back to the house with a wild-eyed uncertainty. As I was lying on the floor, Melanie’s face came into view.

Gin Blossoms, Sunday in Lahaina. Hopefully, you are a fan, or maybe you’ve heard of them, but don’t quite remember that damn catchy song that inundated the radio a few years ago.

Or, maybe you would really enjoy having more bands come to Maui from the mainland. Either way, it’s enough reason to sacrifice your Sunday bong-hit-&-on-the-couch night to see a solid band (guaranteed it’s a band you haven’t seen lately - and isn’t that a plus, sometimes?!)

“What happened to him?” she asked Chris.

He relayed the story, losing it at the moment of impact, due to the fresh image of me and a horse being simultaneously electrocuted. Her expression showed some disapproval of our careless act, but she compassionately asked if she could get anything for me. I reached into my pocket, pulled out the mix tape and asked her to put a song on it.

Her friend from Arizona had just sent her some music and she played a song she liked called “Allison Road” from a band called Gin Blossoms. The song had an undeniable appeal, ringing guitars, dark but catchy lyrics, soothing me in those post trauma moments and taking its place on our little audio-log-in-time.

It would be another 6 months until “Allison Road” would be released on the Gin Blossoms full-length debut, New Miserable Experience in August 1992. But when mainstream radio finally got a hold of it, songs like “Found Out About You”, “Hey Jealousy”, “Until I Fall Away” and “Allison Road” flowed through the airwaves, jolting pop music and sending the album double platinum. MTV also embraced the band, and the frequency of their videoplay would make Jimmy Kimmel look underexposed.

By the end of 1993, the Gin Blossoms’ lighthearted anthems of breakups and booze were everywhere: radio, TV and the crowded party down the street with me yelling into someone’s ear that I’d been listening to them for years.

After forming in Tempe, Arizona, in 1987, the wait for the band had paid off.

The second album Congratulations I’m Sorry, released in February 1996, went gold and produced the hit song, “Till I Hear It From You”, co-written with Marshall Krenshaw. Soon after, though, the band would break up due to, what guitarist Jesse Valenzuela recently told me in a phone interview from Juneau, Alaska, as selfimposed stress, poor management at the time, and the members’ desire to move on to solo projects. Indeed, the members did create new music on their own and in new bands, although, operating somewhere off the radar of mainstream.

A reunion came about around the 10th anniversary of the release of Miserable. The band toured rather heavily last summer, reproaching their humble beginnings, playing mostly in clubs and smaller theaters. “It’s a slew of different realities playing in clubs,” says Jesse, “a little harder work, to be honest.”

This year, the Gin Blossoms will perform over 100 shows, including this Sunday night at the Maui Myth and Magic Theater in Lahaina a rather intimate stage for a band that once opened for Bon Jovi to a crowd of a couple hundred thousand in Germany.

Valenzuela and lead singer Robin Wilson, responsible for writing songs like “Until I Fall Away” and “Allison Road”, continue to write new material and are planning to return to the studio this summer. But Jesse promises that none of the old favs will be left out of Sunday’s show. “We are really thankful for the old hits, they get a huge reaction from the crowd and keep us going. The

songs are like old friends…we won’t take them from you. Take us back to the 90’s.”

I fired a couple of burning questions at Mr. Valenzuela while the boys were waiting to hop on a flight from Alaska back to their warmer digs in Arizona: Ron Ayers: Hey Jesse, you must really be thinking about Hawaii right now. Ever been here before?

Jesse Valenzuela: Yeah, we have spent a week up here in Alaska doing shows in different cities. We did a New Year’s Eve show in Hawaii about 10 years ago.

RA: What the hell is a Gin Blossom?

JV: It’s an old thing…it just means a drunk. Gin Blossoms sounded better than the Tossed Pots.

RA: With all the success from New Miserable Experience, the hit songs, the videos, how did it set you guys up financially? Was it like hitting the lottery?

JV: No, it’s not like that…we’re comfortable…the lottery is that we get to play music for a living.

RA: What new music are you guys listening to?

JV: I like Ryan Adams. I think he is terrific.

RA: You were probably on stage last night but did you get to catch any of the Michael Jackson interview on 20/20?

JV: Wow, I saw some of that!…Yeah, it made me feel creepy. Did it make you feel creepy?

RA: Yeah, it did. I felt a lot of different things, I’m still a fan…but I think he just doesn’t get it.

JV: He’s a huge talent, but you’re absolutely right, he doesn’t get it…I tend to think he is impervious to the world around him. It just doesn’t exist. He created his own reality.

RA: Whether he created one or not, it’s the story he’s going with. It would be detrimental to him at this point to admit that some people might see something wrong with sleeping with a 13-year-old boy.

JV: Oh, I didn’t see that part so I don’t know what happened.

RA: Martin Brasher spent, like, 8 months climbing trees and playing water balloons with Jackson, you know, basic trust-building behavior, then hit him with some personal questions.

JV: And now Michael feels betrayed or something.

RA: Yeah, but it kinda raises the bar, you know, what the public really wants to know. So, how many plastic surgeries has the band had over the last 10 years?

JV: Oh, the Gin Blossoms? I’ll give the same answer Michael gave…we haven’t had any yet.

RA: And why do your children wear masks in public?

JV: Aw, that’s so sad, that was really sad.

RA: Umm…remember that song you guys sang…umm…“Hey Jealousy”?

JV: (pauses)…yeah...

RA: Yeah, that was cool!

JV: (more pausing)…oh, that’s a joke right?

RA: (chagrined) Yeah, that’s a joke.

In spite of director David Dobkin's nonsensical use of '60s rock classics like The Who's "Magic Bus," to underscore action sequences that would work better without the influence of commercial music, "Shanghai Knights" is a vast improvement on its predecessor "Shanghai Noon" (directed by Tom Dey). Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson have refined their grasp of one another's comedic styles since their first film together, and David Dobkin's direction is paced at a livelier tempo than "Noon," albeit the screenwriting team for both films is the same. Owen Wilson more confidently modulates his signature dry modern humor in a way that adds comic momentum beside Chan's perfectly choreographed fights and stunts. However awful the weakly constructed trailer for "Shanghai Knights" makes the film appear and that's pretty awful - the movie is entertaining from start to finish, with plenty of Jackie Chan's comically stylized fight scenes to satisfy his audience.

Since their last adventure, Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) has let his hair grow and become sheriff of Carson City, Nevada, while Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) now works as a "waiter/gigolo" at the Ritz Hotel in New York. While Wang has been keeping the peace, Roy has squandered their fortune in gold on publishing exaggerated novels about the duo's prior escapades. Meanwhile, in the wintry Forbidden City of Shanghai China, Wang's estranged father (Kim S. Chan) is assassinated by Britain's evil Lord Rathbone (played by Aiden Gillen) to obtain the Imperial Seal of China, an exquisite gem the size of a billiard ball. Wang's sister Chon Lin (energetically played by Singapore beauty Fann Wong) valiantly tries to defend her father during the attack using her nimble martial arts skills, but is eventually overtaken by Rathbone's henchmen.

Before Wang and Roy reach England to avenge the murder and recover the

Imperial Seal, Lin has already arrived in London and been arrested by Scotland Yard for attempting to kill Lord Rathbone. As well, Jackie Chan has by now performed a mesmerizing revolving door set piece.

First on the priority list is an extended martial arts romp for Jackie in, around and on top of a British fruit and vegetable market. Jackie makes exceptional use of umbrellas, lemons and even the market's tarp awning to eradicate a legion of British Bobbies attempting to arrest our American duo for their flamboyant commotion. The recently escaped Lin, with whom Roy becomes instantly smitten, soon joins our duo, and Rathbone's evil ally Wu Chan (Donnie Yen) reveals himself to grant Chan with more opportunities for fast punches and spinning kicks.

Lin poses an obstacle to the womanizing that Roy hopes to do in London, but more importantly Fann Wong brings a fresh-faced fury of female martial arts technique to "Shanghai Knights," that a movie like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" employed to notable effect.

Fann Wong also brings a unifying chemistry to the comic relationship between Jackie and Owen that is exploited with comic pathos when Wang tries to discourage Lin from being seduced by his sidekick, while Roy himself eavesdrops outside their door. A rift threatens to doom our duo's friendship until Roy realizes that every bad thing Wang told his sister about him is true. It's an event that exposes each of the trio's distinct level of loyalty and pride, and raises the stakes for the budding romance at hand.

"Shanghai Knights" is full of little references to Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd (see the clock finale) to give a traditional context to Jackie Chan's own special brand of physical comedy. Jackie's stunts have gotten tamer over his last few films, but he remains a special breed of entertainer who will go to any length to delight himself and his audience with gleeful physical surprises that are all the more endearing for his gracious intentions. I'd take an average Jackie Chan movie over any other kind of mediocre film any day of the week.

SHANGHAI KNIGHTS - (PG13) - Action/Comedy - In this sequel to Shanghai Noon, Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) head to England in pursuit of the man who killed Chon's estranged father. Meanwhile, Chon's sister Lin has also come to Britain for the same purpose, and discovers a plot to murder the Royal Family along the way.

SHE SHOVES ME, SHE SHOVES ME NOT This girl I'm seeing has a pattern of getting close to me, then pulling back. She blames her "control issues," saying she's very independent and doesn't want to make decisions as part of a couple. She really likes me, but doesn't want a serious relationship. The thing is, neither do I – I just like being with her. I did do nice things for her - left wine on her doorstep when she had a bad day, made CDs for her with personalized labels and poetry I wrote for her inside. She freaked. I eventually convinced her I was just trying to be nice. Recently, I gave her some paper characters -- this Japanese stuff she likes -- plus a scarf and stupid little toys. Her response: "More gifts?" I said it was no biggie for me. She left me a message that she loved everything I gave her, but also canceled our date for that evening. We haven't seen each other since. I'm so frustrated. Why is it so hard to spend time with a girl I know likes me and likes being with me?

Following classic buddy movie form, you start with one tough guy (maybe Chuck Norris, if he isn't already cast in something weepy with Meg Ryan or Meryl Streep). You pair him with another tough guy (Stallone, perhaps, if Ving Rhames is busy playing Queen Elizabeth). Shot Number One: Chuck tosses Sly pink glitter lip gloss on a pink glitter plastic key chain -- all the ammunition a soldier of fortune needs to make it through a gauntlet of cliquish 11-year-old girls.

In other words, the confusion here seems pretty straightforward. You told her you were cool being a bud "with benefits," then showed her what you meant by treating her just like the rest of your buddies. You know -- like when your big, hairy guy buddies lose at poker, how you cheer them up by making them CDs with personalized labels, and tucking poetry just for them inside: "Oh, man, when you lose it all, it's nice to know you have a friend you can call. Clean my toilets and mop my floors, and I'll see you'll rarely sleep outdoors."

Why bother with a woman who's so dead-set against letting love into her life that she practically accessorizes with keep-away signs and a portable moat? Well, because you'd sell both kidneys to, uh...spend time with her. But, can you find your way back into the picture? Maybe – if you sneak in the service entrance. Bring a previously missing element: restraint. Aside from a speech about how little you want a "real" relationship, the only sound this girl should hear is the sound of your jets being cooled -- a sound which bears no resemblance to the sound of stupid little toys being wrapped. Treat her like one of the guys, except when you're unwrapping her. Don't give her so much as a toothpick in a restaurant. Be unavailable: "Tonight?

Sorry...have to wash my hair and wax my legs."

Ease her fear that she'll get mired in gooey romance, and she might stick around...long enough to accidentally get stuck on you. It's a small price to pay -- making like you're shooting a buddy action-adventure -- to dupe her into the soggy English romance you swear you don't want.
