LAHAINA MARKET PLACE CUTS DOWN ITS TREES
We’ve known for about the past six months that times have definitely gotten tough for Tricia Morris, probably Maui’s most famous mortgage broker. That the island could even have something called a “most famous mortgage broker” is testament both to Morris’ marketing savvy and the extent to which the real estate bubble from a few years ago consumed Maui. In any case, Morris’ career apparently mirrored the nation’s own experiences with subprime mortgages–she got rich, then she got broke. Her and her husband’s bid for bankruptcy ended earlier this year, which was bad enough. But now the state of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) is going after her, which is kinda much worse. “Commissioner of Financial Institutions Iris Ikeda-Catalani ordered Kathleen Patricia Morris and Herman-Morris Enterprises Inc., dba Hawaii’s Premiere Mortgage Co., to cease operating as a mortgage loan originator and a mortgage loan originator company on suspicion of violating Hawaii law,” stated a DCCA news release sent out Friday, May 17. The news release then outlined six al-
Show of hands for those waiting for the new Kihei-Haliimaile road? Yeah, well, you can put your hands down for a while– a long while, apparently. Though the Sunday edition of The Maui News has a frontpage story headlined “Upcountry to Kihei highway project slowly moving ahead,” there’s actually nothing in the accompanying story to indicate the road (which, unlike Oprah Winfrey’s private road connecting South Kihei to Keokea, will be open to the public) is moving at anything faster than zero miles per hour. Yes, the story points out in the first sentence, the Legislature recently approved $3.6 million in funding for land acquisition for the road’s corridor. But (much

And now we’re going to talk a bit about trees–or rather, the act of going up to very old, very beautiful trees and chain-sawing them into sawdust and toothpicks. This is happening, or by this point has happened, at the Lahaina Market Place on Front Street. That little courtyard of shops has been an oasis of shade for decades in Lahaina Town, but no more of that. All of the trees are coming down. Did I mention at least one of the shop owners in the place is pissed? Did I mention he is supremely pissed? “It looks like a SCUD missile hit the courtyard,” said Scott Picard of Sure Thing Burger. “Lahaina Market Place is a respite for everyone in town. You know how warm it gets. This is where they stopped. They’d smell the food, see the jewelry, see the glass blower. Now that’s gone.” No one from Lahaina Market Place management responded to my request for comment (the property owner is the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation). And one employee of one of the Lahaina Market Place did tell me that one reason for the tree removal was apparently that the roots from the old trees were pushing up the courtyard’s bricks (a common enough reason for tree removal). But Picard told me that he received no warning whatsoever that the trees were coming down. “There were no signs, letters or phone calls,” he said. “We had to do a temporary closure.You can’t give food away during construction like that. It’s like a sawmill when you’re cutting these trees down. It was like it was snowing–there was total whiteout.” So, yeah. Those of who liked to duck into Lahaina Market Place and rest under the shade of gentle, ancient trees while window shopping or getting brain freeze from one of Ululani’s Shave Ice are now out of luck. “They could have done a ceremony,” Picard told me. “They could have done a million things. Instead, this is an epic event with a disastrous ending.”

Well, it was a nice idea, connecting South Maui with Upcountry in such a way that people could travel between both areas without having to deal with Kahului traffic. Seriously though, given that Republicans currently control the U.S. House of Representatives (which I think has some say over spending and such) while Democrats control the State of Hawaii (and hold all four of our elected congressional seats), I think it’s safe to say that we’re not going to see any big road building checks sent our way any day soon. COUNTY OF MAUI AND MILITARY TO PROVIDE FREE HEALTHCARE Call government-funded healthcare a military “rapid deployment exercise,” give it a cool name like “Tropic Care Maui” and even the Republicans will get on board. Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa did just that in a May 14 news release announcing that free health, dental and vision care will be offered to Maui County, courtesy of 400 uniformed personnel in the US armed forces.
KAHULUI ROTARY CLUB CALLS FOR PALAKA AWARD NOMINATIONS In the last year, the Kahului Rotary Club has fulfilled its motto “Service Above Self ” with community giving projects all around Maui. Now it’s time for the organization’s biggest fundraising event of the year. There will be a special award luncheon for the 2013 Palaka Award on Friday, Aug. 2 at the Kamehameha Gold Club in Waikapu. Before the ceremony, the annual fundraising “golf ball drop” will take place, in which attendees may purchase a golf ball that will be dropped by helicopter onto the green. The owner of the ball making it closest to the hole is eligible for a yet-unnamed prize. Proceeds will go towards the Michael H. The simplest dishes are sometimes the most meaningful. To me, nothing tops a good grilled cheese. For Hawaiian celebrity chef Alan Wong, that favorite childhood comfort food was tamago kake gohan, an austere combination of raw egg and hot rice. Yet these simple dishes are sometimes deceiving in their appearance, which masks the nuances and history underneath. In PBS Hawaii’s new program, Family Ingredients, Wong will uncover these tasty gems by traveling first to his hometown of Wahiawa and then across the pacific to his birthplace in Japan to trace the origin of tamago kake gohan and another simple ethnic staple, miso soup. The program, hosted by Chef Ed Kenney, “connects family, food and culture by exploring the origins of ethnic foods, local farmers and cultural traditions.” Viewers will follow as Family Ingredients visits Honda Tofu and Petersons’ Upland Farm, where Wong’s mom shopped in his youth and where Chef Wong continues to source tofu and eggs for his restaurants.
Kenney and Wong then travel nearly 4,000 miles to visit Japanese farmers, businesses and chefs who share their expertise. When Wong returns home, he prepares the comforting tamago kake gohan for his own mother using all he has been influenced by in the trip to his birthplace. Viewers will see whether his version of the dish receives the prestigious seal of mother’s approval. The show is a production of independent filmmaker Heather Giugni, with coproducer Dan Nakasone and director Ty Sanga. It will premiere Thursday, May 23 at 9pm. PBS Hawaii Presents will encore Family Ingredients on Thursday, May 30 at 10pm.
“This program will provide vital health care services for residents, especially those who don’t have or cannot afford any medical insurance,” said Arakawa in the statement. Residents will be able to receive care at several locations across the islands. These clinics will run June 4-12 with hours from 8am-4pm. All residents are welcome and no identification or fees will be required. Uniformed doctors, nurses, pharmacists, ophthalmologists, dentists and other healthcare workers will perform services including physical examinations, vision checks, basic dental care and nutrition counseling, among others, stated the May 14 news release. Tropic Care 2013 will be made possible through collaboration between the county, the State of Hawaii Department of Health and the Innovative Readiness Training Program of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. Maui County was selected as a location for the program after Arakawa signed an official request to the U.S. Department of Defense in 2011. Last year’s location was Kauai, which received about $1 million in

free health services for an estimated 12,000 residents, according to military officials cited by the news statement. “This opportunity will allow the Department of Health to save thousands of dollars and collect substantial and important data to map the landscape of Maui County’s health status,” said Dr. Lorrin Pang, Health Officer of the Maui County District, in the statement. “Tropic Care is a huge undertaking but our Federal, State and County levels of government are doing this so the community can reap the benefits.” Here are the free clinic locations: • Central Maui: IAO INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL – June 4-12 • South Maui: ST. The beauty pageant each April at the Rattlesnake Roundup in Sweetwater, Texas, requires traditional skills like interview poise, evening-gown fashion and talent, but also some ability and inclination to milk and skin rattlers. High school senior Kyndra Vaught won this year’s Miss Snake Charmer, wearing jeweled boots one night for her country-western ballad, then Kevlar boots and camouflage chaps the next as she took on dozens of rattlers in the wooden snake pit. Vaught expertly held up one serpent, offered its tail-end rattles for a baby to touch, then helped hold, measure, milk and skin a buzzing, slithery serpent. That there are flea “circuses” is bizarre enough, but in March a cold spell in Germany wiped out an entire troupe of “performing” fleas, requiring the flea whisperer to secure replacements (because, of course, the show must go on). Trainer Robert Birk reached out to a university near MechernichKommern for 50 substitutes, which he apparently worked into the act over one weekend. Fleas, with or without training, can pull up to 160,000 times their own weight and leap to 100 times their own height. [The Independent (London), 3-31-2013]
MIXING IT UP The owner of a restaurant in southern Sweden told authorities in March that the former owner had assured him that “everything had been approved,” apparently including the appliance the restaurant used for mixing salad dressings and sauces -- which was a table-model cement mixer. When health officials told the owner that it certainly was not “approved,” he immediately bought another, “rust-free,” mixer. MODERN ANGLERS Chad Pregracke, 38, a Mississippi River legend, spends nine months a year hauling heavy-duty litter out of waterways with his crew of 12. He told CNN in March that he has yanked up 218 washing machines, 19 tractors, four pianos and nearly 1,000 refrigerators–totaling over 3,500 tons of trash–and has collected the world’s largest array of bottles with messages inside (63). BEST REALITY SHOW EVER The Discovery Channel announced a new survival show to debut this summer, “Naked and Afraid,” dropping off a man and a woman (strangers), without tools or clothes, to fend for themselves on an isolated Maldives island. Among the previews: Ms. Kellie Nightlinger, 38, a self-described “ultimate survivalist,” finally thought after two weeks of nearly starving that she could attract fish close enough to be snatched up (as a New York Daily News reporter put it) “us(ing) her ladyparts as bait to catch fish between her legs.” Said a Discovery Channel executive: “Survival shows are so common now that it’s gotten more and more difficult to convince the audience that what they’re watching is something extreme.” [New York Daily News, 4-14-2013]

In the similarly wealthy city of Hong Kong, in the “gritty, working-class West Kowloon neighborhood” where the laborers serving the rich live, about 100,000 dwell in pitiable housing, including the increasing number who rent what are basically stacks of wire sleep cages, measuring about 16 square feet each (and offering no protection against bedbugs). still something about these coming months that demand we focus our attention to the fresh air and sunshine. As we do every year, we’re highlighting a few outdoor activities that you can enjoy. We all know about snorkeling and surfing (the latter in Hawaii actually peaks in the winter) so we decided to
explore summer fun that perhaps isn’t well known around the island. Hitting Balls The place to do that is Hitter’s Paradise in Kihei

I
’m pretty sure we can get you hitting the ball well when you are done,” he said when I first asked about dropping by Hitter’s Paradise in Kihei, but I didn’t really believe it. I recalled inept middle school PE days, standing awkwardly at home plate with all eyes on me, and the creeping uncomfortable self-consciousness of adolescence. But given the fact that I’d never been to a batting cage or even swung a bat in years, I decided it was worth at least checking out. I arrived at the batting cages, located near
the Tesoro on the Pi‘ilani Highway, and was reassured by the “All Skill Levels” posted on the banners and the fact that Hitter’s Paradise owner Paul Skarbo was much friendlier than any gym schoolteacher I’d ever encountered. “Hey, howzit,” owner Paul Skarbo said when I walked into his office. “You wanna hit some balls today?” His black and white Labrador-mix greeted me and wagged its tail. Skarbo seemed at home behind a counter topped with baseballs and baseball cards, surrounded in an office space with baseball bats and other equipment. “I loved going to the [batting cage] that used to be in Kahului,” said Skarbo, a former player and organizer of Maui’s Wood Bat (over 25) Baseball League. “I always wanted to own my own business… so I thought, it’s worth trying and see if I could make it work. It’s worked out great so far.” Hitter’s Paradise has been open a year and a half and currently operates eight pitching machines. Three of the machines are from Kahului’s old batting cages and were sold
to the county where they were neglected outdoors and let rust. Skarbo salvaged the machines and now they sit painted green under better care in his batting cages. After some talking, I was ready to hit some balls. Dogs don’t judge. I stepped into the cage and after some warming up, I was absorbed. The clean clink sound of a ball hitting the $400 borrowed metal bat and the sight of it flying to meet the hanging mesh ceiling. Arms recoiling with bat in hand. A pause and breath, then a single red warning light. A cocked bat and feet replanted, watching straight ahead machinery lift and load another baseball. Then the pneumatic Shoomp! sound of a released ball passing speedily through the metal guide. A round swing and Clink! It becomes rhythmic, satisfying and cathartic. Also, it was fun. “Some families come at night and bring dinner to eat in the ‘dugout,’” Skarbo said, referring to the covered area with picnic tables. “We have a TV so they can watch sports and hit balls.” And with Maui’s kids about to be out for the summer, Hitter’s Paradise is opening for expanded summer hours starting May 27, which run from 10am to 8pm from Sunday to Thursday, and until 9pm on Fri-
day and Saturday. In addition, Hitter’s Paradise serves Little League teams, who come to visit during the day. There are lanes for slow pitch softball and fast pitch, and for baseball speeds from 45 to 70 miles per hour. There’s a pitcher’s mound so people can hit live balls, and a radar gun that’ll clock how fast your throw is. Misting machines are mounted outside to provide an escape from the Kihei heat in between exerting hitting sessions. I stepped out of the cage with the chest of my shirt a little damp from sweat and relaxed in the shade of the dugout. Whether I was “hitting the ball well” by that point, as Paul had trusted me to be, was debatable, but irrelevant. What mattered was that I had a good time. hat do you like best about trapeze?” instructor Dorian McRae asks me as I climb 25 feet in the air at Emerald City Trapeze in Lahaina to fly once more. “The rush!” I quickly say, as there’s nothing quite like the feeling of jumping off a tiny platform while grasping a moving swing, then flipping upside down and hanging by your knees dozens of feet off the ground. McRae laughs. “Ah, yes–the adrenaline,” he says. “That goes away after the first swing, but returns every time you learn a new trick.” As McRae guided me through the process of jumping and landing, then clipped me into my safely belt, I thought about what he said. And he was right: the next swing wasn’t as much of a shock as a thrill when I leaped again. The amazing team of trapeze and aerial artists kept the whole experience fun and professional. It was a great workout and all around super fun adventure. I’m totally hooked. The views alone from their spot in Emerald Plaza are breathtaking. McRae came over from Seattle–home of the original Emerald City Trapeze Arts (ECTA), which Gary Kirkland opened in Washington five years ago. McRae says the best part about teaching trapeze is meeting

and helping people. He seems right at home when perched on the platform high in the air, and can’t help but make trapeze seem easy peasy. “We had a rig set up outside for the summer,” says Kirkland’s daughter Hoku, who runs Maui’s Emerald City Trapeze Arts. “But the season is so short in the Northwest. We decided to look for a location that would have great weather all year. So we thought Hawaii.” The Washington location has gained a following as a spot for birthday parties, date nights and frequent flyers. Kirkland says this has given way to a unique community of enthusiasts who started swinging from the trapeze as a recreational sport, but have now developed into a pro team and can perform. Seattle trapeze expat Jesse Lenihan decided to come to Maui and is now one of the flying trapeze instructors and performers at Emerald City Trapeze. He says he drove by the Seattle facility one day during his construction job and decided to try it. You could say that first experience spurred him to literally run away with the circus. Anthony Delaney, an amazing flyer with Cirque du Solei creds, a recent Asia tour and a brother who runs a circus school in Australia, grew up in the business. He told me he’s been teaching for a decade, and it shows. He had my daughter flying through the air in no time. He says kids are a natural for this, and any kids over the age of six are invited to try. In fact, Emerald City will host a summer kids camp starting June 12. Maui is already getting its own following. I met Maui resident Trish Luna at ECTA who says one try at trapeze is all it took before she started training to work there. She says she’s the black sheep with the least experience, but still loves
it. Easy going and fun, she put me right at ease as I signed my waiver forms and headed up the ladder. The talented team at Emerald City Trapeze Arts also hosts a free show and festive Cirque du Sunday on the second Sunday of each month. Next one coming up takes place on June 9. It’s a great intro for the fly-curious, costing just $10 for your first fly, $5 for the next and $2 after that. There will also be face-painting, a DJ, food truck and snacks before the show. After the most recent show, everyone settled down for an outdoor movie on the lawn. Kirkland dazzled in her solo on the hoop, and the death defying flying trapeze
acts got my heart pumping. If you’re looking for another kind of thrill, ECTA hosts a monthly full moon fly at 9pm every month on the night of the full moon. Playing war is a blast at Maui Paintball BY JEN RUSSO
I
never thought gunning strangers down could be so entertaining. There’s very little that intimidates me, and I love a good adventure. But when I got invited to try Maui Paintball I was at a total loss. I had no idea what to expect. In fact, I came really close to chickening out. It’s not the part that involves holding a gun–I like that. I’ve pulled the trigger on a shotgun shooting skeet in Lanai and that is powerfully fun. But going in a game where people could shoot at me just sounded hectic. Luckily, my curiosity got the better of me, and I showed up at Maui Paintball in Olowalu on a recent Monday for a day of sport. A day at Maui Paintball is good, clean fun, and I have the bruises and dirt under my fingernails to prove it. Owner Clint Hansen discovered his appreciation for paintball as kid at Kula’s D&D Paintball, but that closed down in 2005. Feeling the loss of a great activity for kids and other enthusiasts, Hansen worked to find a new location. He says it took about five years to find his current spot in Olowalu. Next, the permitting process and proper build-out took another two years, and he finally opened
this February. “There are a series of safety rules that we go over to ensure that no one gets hurt as well as keep the games light-hearted,’ Hansen says about how they play games at Maui Paintball. “There are a few game types we play that include flags or just plain elimination. We offer a tips, tricks and tactics class on Saturday and Sunday if given 24 hours notice for just $5 an hour. Class can start as early as 9am, which gives you up to two hours of training before the first game starts.” When I arrived, I was immediately relieved to find a bunch of the people showing up to play were also there for the first time. Angela Nolan, the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas’ General Manager, and Bobby Megargle, Director for Food and Beverage, were holding a team-building day at the field with a group of about 30 employees, many of whom were newbies. That offset my getting intimidated by a group of serious guys who brought their own equipment and fatigues. I was sure they were going to take me out more or less immediately after the game started. To my surprise, the game is not played to each his own. You’re pulled into teams, Team A and Team B, and the groups square off against each other. After donning your safety gear, signing your waiver, buying paintballs and loading your gun, you’re ready to tour the course. Our guide was really good at explaining all the rules in detail, such as no shooting people on your team and no blasting people in the back. Also, merely getting hit by a ball is not enough to declare a person out–it has to burst. Our
guide’s best tip was to move quickly toward the front, as it makes the game move fast and keeps propelling the action forward. Hansen and his team have built a dream paint war zone in the Olowalu forest. There are two-story forts, large concrete structures and huge pipes strewn about every-
outright mayhem and incredibly exhilarating. If you get hit, you raise your hand and run off the course. Nobody is supposed to take cheap shots at you, and then play resumes. During the first game, I was one of the first people hit and called out, but I was also right in the front of the ac-

There are trees everywhere, which both add plenty of places to conceal your movement and keep you shaded and cool. Prudent safety measures keep everyone pretty close to injury-free. For instance, you have to wear a full face mask anytime you approach the course, and there is no shooting paintball guns unless play is ongoing. You get dirtier from nature than the paint, which is all washable and biodegradable. Basically, Team A starts at one end of the course while Team B starts at the other. You have a few moments to discuss any strategy and then the game starts. You run ahead, ducking behind what you can, trying to get as close as you can to the opposing “enemy” team. Or, put simply, you take cover and then start shooting. This all sounds great on paper, but when play actually begins the game is chaotic, just shy of
tion in an exposed position. During the second game I did a better job of taking cover and never got out (in fact, our team “won”). During the third game, I actually shot someone that I was aiming for and got them out (before I got out). “We just had our first tournament which raised $2084 for the Wounded Warrior Project,” says Hansen. “We had a girls only game May 18 which has been generating a lot of attention from first-time female players. We’re also doing a summer camp Monday through Friday, starting June 3. We’re working on getting glow in the dark paintballs and offering night games on Wednesdays so people can play after work.” I may have not known a thing about paintball, but after just one day I’m looking forward to the next time. The game is fun for the whole family and open to kids over 12. To make reservations you can use their website Mauipaintball.com but drop-ins are welcome, too. ears ago, my Dad and I watched an old Star Trek episode, in which the Enterprise was being attacked and the cast simulated the starship being hit from laser blasts by waving their arms and rocking back and forth. It looked like a bad day at Mime School. Decades later, there’s a scene in Star Trek Into Darkness where, once again, the structure of the Enterprise is being torpedoed and the people inside are being rocked by the impact. Only now, with a nine-figure budget and state of the art special effects, the scene doesn’t draw laughter and is anything but campy. Instead, seeing crew members knocked into walls, fearing for their lives and getting sucked out into space not only looks uncannily real but quite scary. What a difference between the old and new.
Differences in storytelling between past Treks and the new J.J. Abrams sci-fi adventure illustrates the strength and weaknesses of the latest installment. The story concerns the crew of the Enterprise on the hunt for a terrorist who goes by the name of John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch, in a commanding turn). Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) is enraged by Harrison’s arrogance and the weight of his crimes, while Spock (Zachary Quinto) recognizes something deeper, more troubling about him. An intriguing aspect of this and the other Star Trek films is that they are all meant to take place in one universe, with one strand of continuity that extends to the TV shows as well as the movies. Star Trek Into Darkness pays homage to and even recreates story points from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It suggests a tendency of life in the universe, human and otherwise, to repeat itself. Unfortunately, it also demonstrates how things were done much better in a film made in 1982. Pine and especially Quinto are excellent, portraying their iconic roles with the respect, gravity and panache needed. I wouldn’t dare invite the wrath of Trekkies

(let alone Khan), but an argument can be made that Pine and Quinto play their roles better than William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy ever did. Abrams’ 2009 film made my top 10 best of the year list and is a superb example of re-establishing a franchise by letting character and story come first. One of the strengths of the 2009 film was that it was truly an ensemble piece, giving a large, talented cast ample moments to develop their roles and shine. But in this busy new film, only Zoe Saldana as Uhura has as much room as Pine and Quinto to stand out. Her crewmates, particularly John Cho and Anton Yelchin, are barely in it. Karl Urban’s Bones is mostly on hand for easy comic relief and Simon Pegg’s turn as Scotty feels overly frantic, like he’s trying too hard for laughs.
Cumberbatch makes a strong impression, particularly during some effective, Hannibal Lechter-like encounters; he’s less interesting in the last act, when he becomes a standard villain who runs and punches away. Eric Bana’s villain in the previous film was stronger. The gifted Peter Weller’s supporting turn mostly reaffirms how natural his presence feels in science fiction. The pace is rushed, as if the big moments were given priority over the quieter ones. This is a gripping adventure, but Trekkies should set their phasers to Lowered Expectations. Still, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry likely would have approved, as there is a mix of ideas and spectacle on display, though, in Abrams’ hands, his vision of the future isn’t as optimistic as it once was. ■
