Dacht ik vroeger aan afstuderen, dan dacht ik aan de graduation ceremonies uit Amerikaanse highschool-films en -series. Tijdens dergelijke scènes klinkt altijd hetzelfde, bombastische lied: Land of hope and glory. Na jarenlange priming door Saved by the Bell genereert deze melodie bij mij een uitzinnige pavlovreactie. Draaiden ze het in de supermarkt, zou ik m’n karretje even bij de vleeswaren moeten parkeren omdat ik anders, overmand door emotie, zeker een kind of krantenrek zou raken. Ook heb ik een zwak voor de uitdossing van Amerikaanse televisielaureaten. Dan bedoel ik vooral: dat hoedje. Ruitvorming, chic, afgewerkt met guitig kwastje. Aan het einde van de ceremonie (lees: het einde van de film of aflevering) werpt men het collectief de lucht in. Nog voor de hoofddeksels neerkomen, start de aftiteling. Vermoedelijk zodat we niet zien hoe scherpe hoedenranden oogbollen doorboren. Toch vind ik het een fijn ritueel. Als het kapot gooien van een bord na een Griekse maaltijd. Een teken van vreugde, een markering van het eind: eindelijk vrij!

Mijn eigen buluitreiking verliep wat mat. We werden toegesproken, kregen een bulmap, en druppelden toen traag de zaal uit. Buiten zeiden we tegen elkaar: ‘Nou, veel plezier de rest van je leven, mocht ik je niet meer zien…’

Er miste iets. Een afsluiting. Daarom vraag ik je: kijk eens naar die designmap waar je bul in zit. Het is een mooi ding ja. Maar lijst je je bul in, dan heb je er niets aan. En leg je je bul meteen in een la, nou ja…dan heb je er ook niets aan. Mijn voorstel: gooi die map in de gracht. Samen met je jaargenoten. Dat is veilig. En een heldere afbakening van jullie vier (vijf, zes?) mooie jaren samen. Kijk elkaar aan, lach. En speel in je hoofd Land of hope and glory af.

Once upon a time, the thought of graduating conjured up visions of American high school graduation ceremonies that I’d seen in films and on TV. The soundtrack to those scenes was always the same: the bombastic Land of Hope and Glory. After years of priming by Saved by the Bell, I now have an extreme Pavlov reaction to that melody. If I hear it played in, say, the supermarket, I’m so overwhelmed I quickly have to park my cart in the meat aisle to avoid hitting a stray child or newspaper rack. I also have a soft spot for the attire of those American TV laureates. Especially the cap – rhombic, chic, topped with an impish tassel. At the end of the ceremony (read: the end of the film or episode), the caps are flung into the air en masse. And even before the headgear descends, the credits begin to roll. Presumably that’s so we don’t see the sharp corners of the caps piercing unprotected eyeballs. But it’s a great ritual all the same. Like smashing plates after a Greek meal. Both are signs of joy, signals of the end: free at last!

My own diploma ceremony was less scintillating. We heard a speech, were handed a diploma folder and filed slowly out of the hall. Outside, we said things like, ‘Well, if I never see you again, have a great life …’. Something was missing. Closure. So I suggest this: take a good look at that swank folder encasing your diploma. It’s impressive, I know. But frame your diploma and it’s not much good to you. Stick it in a drawer and, well … it’s not much use then either. My idea is this: fling that folder into the canal. Do it with your classmates, en masse (it feels safer that way). Then you’ve marked a clear end to your four (five, six …) wonderful years together. Look each other in the eyes.

Laugh. And play Land of Hope and Glory in your head.

Post uit Zweden Terugkijkend op mijn tijd als bachelorstudent Economie en bedrijfskunde in Amsterdam, kan ik tevreden zeggen: geweldige keuze, geweldige tijd! Ik heb er erg van genoten, vooral vanwege de fantastische mensen die ik er ontmoette, de interessante en uitdagende studie en de stad, die altijd iets speciaals voor mij heeft betekend. De bachelor heeft ook gediend als een bruikbare en solide basis voor mijn vervolgopleidingen.

Na de bachelor in Amsterdam, wilde ik mijn Spaans verbeteren en tegelijkertijd een master doen op mijn vakgebied. Dat deed ik door de Spaanstalige master Strategisch management en

internationale bedrijfskunde te volgen aan de Universiteit van Sevilla in Spanje. Momenteel doe ik mijn tweede master, aan de Universiteit van Lund in Zweden, op het gebied van het managen van mensen, kennis en verandering. Ondanks de dagelijkse strijd met de sneeuw die ik momenteel moet leveren, is het fascinerend om de Zweedse manier van leven te ervaren, die nogal verschilt van die in mijn vorige gastland, Spanje.

Wat is de volgende stap? Aansluitend bij mijn internationale opleidingen wil ik straks wereldwijd gaan solliciteren als management trainee. Ik zal veel sollicitaties richten aan bedrijven die zijn gevestigd in Nederland. Tot nu toe heb ik in zes landen gewoond, maar het is de Nederlandse ervaring die de grootste impact op mij heeft gehad, in academisch, persoonlijk en professioneel opzicht. Daarom zie ik ernaar uit om naar Nederland terug te keren en mijn ervaringen daar verder te kunnen verrijken.

Mail from Sweden Looking back at my time in Amsterdam as a student of the BSc programme in Economics and Business, I can happily say: Great choice, great times! Basically I enjoyed it a lot due to the wonderful people I met, the interesting and challenging programme and the city that has always been something special for me. The BSc has also served as a useful and solid basis for my further studies.

After the BSc in Amsterdam, I wanted to improve my Spanish whilst combining this with a Master in my field. I did this by taking a Spanish-language Master in Strategic Management and International Business at the University of Seville in Spain. At

the moment, I am pursuing my second Master’s degree – in Managing People, Knowledge and Change – at the University of Lund in Sweden. Despite the current daily struggles with the snow, it is fascinating to experience the Swedish way of life.

It’s very different from that in my previous host country, Spain.

What’s the next step? In line with my goal of international education, my plan is to apply to management trainee programmes globally. Many of my applications will go to companies located in the Netherlands. So far I have lived in six countries, but it’s the ‘Dutch experience’ that has had the biggest impact on me, academically, personally and professionally. This is why I look forward to returning and further enriching my experiences there.

Internationale alumni Uit het oog, uit het hart? Niet wat de UvA betreft. Je bent afgestudeerd en de wereld ligt aan je voeten. Misschien blijf je hier, misschien ga je (terug) naar het buitenland. Even stappen in Amsterdam zit er dan niet in. Waarom dan toch contact houden met oud-studiegenoten en de UvA? Stel: je verhuist voor je werk naar een plaats waar je niemand kent. Via de universiteit kun je anderen in je nieuwe omgeving op het spoor komen. Of misschien heb je juist een contact in Nederland nodig. Internationale alumni kunnen reflecteren op de aansluiting tussen studie en wereldwijde praktijk en potentiële nieuwe studenten informeren over mogelijkheden aan de UvA. Bovendien houdt de UvA jou op de hoogte van ontwikkelingen in Nederland én elders: de jaarlijkse bijeenkomsten in internationale centra als Barcelona, Berlijn, New York en Parijs, bijvoorbeeld. Je studietijd is een cruciale fase in je leven. Je ontmoet nieuwe mensen en er gaat een wereld van kennis voor je open. Waarom zou je die wereld achter je laten op het moment dat je de echte wijde wereld intrekt?

Alumni overseas Out of sight, out of mind? Not as far as the UvA is concerned. You’ve finished your studies and the world is at your feet – maybe you’ll stay here, maybe you’ll go overseas again. For the moment, a night out in Amsterdam isn’t foremost in your mind. So why stay in touch with your old classmates and alma mater? Well, suppose your work takes you to a place where you don’t know anyone. The University of Amsterdam Alumni Association (AUV) can help you find the names of other UvA alumni at your new location, or provide contact information for someone in the Netherlands. International alumni can offer new insights into the relationship between study and professional practice, and inform potential new students about opportunities at the UvA. The UvA can keep you up to date on developments in the Netherlands and elsewhere, for example at the annual meetings in major cities such as Barcelona, Berlin, New York and Paris. Studying represents a crucial phase in your life – you meet new people and access the wide world of knowledge.

De Latijnse term ‘alumnus’ (meervoud: alumni) wordt wereldwijd gebruikt voor een afgestudeerde van een instelling voor hoger onderwijs. Iedereen die een erkend diploma of erkende graad behaalde (met uitzondering van de propedeuse), is alumnus (m) of alumna (v).

Waarom een academische gemeenschap? UvAalumni hebben twee dingen gemeen: zij kozen voor een academische studie en voor de UvA als universiteit om deze studie aan te volgen. Daarmee delen zij de academische waarden van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Deze verbintenis – de basis voor een levenslang lidmaatschap van de academische gemeenschap – is de moeite waard om te koesteren.

Wat kun je en krijg je als alumnus? In deze speciale afstudeereditie van SPUI lees je wat de Universiteit van Amsterdam en de Amsterdamse UniversiteitsVereniging (AUV) alumni bieden. The Latin term ‘alumnus’ (plural: alumni) is used worldwide to describe a graduate from an institute of higher education. Anyone who holds a recognised diploma or degree from the University of Amsterdam (with the exception of a propaedeutic year certificate) is an alumnus.

Why create an academic community? UvA alumni have two things in common: they chose to study at a university and they chose to do so at the UvA, thus embracing the academic values of this University. This relationship – the basis for a lifelong membership in the academic community – is worth cherishing.

What are the benefits of being an alumnus? In this special graduate edition of SPUI you can learn what it is the UvA and University of Amsterdam Alumni Association (AUV) have to offer alumni.

We will, for example, send you the SPUI magazine for alumni and friends from now on – in print and digitally. We organise annual academic gatherings such as the University Day and the AUV Day, as well as local meetings for international alumni.

De Amsterdamse Universiteits-Vereniging

University of Amsterdam Alumni Association

De Amsterdamse Universiteits-Vereniging (AUV) is de algemene alumnivereniging van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, met leden uit alle disciplines en faculteiten en een traditie die teruggaat tot 1889. Doel is het versterken van de band van alumni met de wetenschapsbeoefening aan de UvA en de band tussen alumni onderling. Als lid blijf je op de hoogte van de ontwikkelingen binnen de universiteit, kun je deelnemen aan tal van ontmoetingen en activiteiten en ontvang je de UvA-Alumnipas, waarmee je voordeel geniet bij diverse universitaire en culturele voorzieningen. Bovendien kunnen AUV-leden gebruikmaken van elkaars kennis en elkaar van dienst zijn, zowel op het professionele als het persoonlijke vlak. Moet je zelf een club oprichten, of kun je beter een verband vormen binnen de Amsterdamse UniversiteitsVereniging? Hoe kom je aan adressen? Welke activiteiten vallen in goede aarde? Wat kun je internationale alumni bieden? Initiatiefnemers komen voor vele vragen te staan. Plannen voor een kring? Ga dan eens praten met de AUV-coördinator. Die weet wat er komt kijken bij de oprichting van een alumniverband en vertelt je hoe de AUV nieuwe kringen van dienst is.

Start your own alumni group?

Do you feel the need for an alumni group for your particular study programme but not see it in the overview below? It might be worth looking into how great that need is and what shape that new alumni group could take. Should you set up a new group or link up with existing ones within the AUV? How do you obtain the necessary addresses?

Which activities might be well received? What can you offer international alumni? People who start their own alumni group face many questions. If you’re planning to start such a group, then talk to the AUV coordinator. She knows what it takes to set one up and can advise you on how the AUV can help.

Niet bang zijn voor rare ideeën DON’T BE AFRAID OF STRANGE IDEAS ‘Ik begon met Communicatiewetenschap maar raakte geïnteresseerd in Engelstalige literatuur en beatschrijvers als William Burroughs en Jack Kerouac. Na mijn eerste jaar stapte ik over naar Engels. Ik leidde een teruggetrokken leven en verspilde best wat tijd. Nu merk ik dat het leven leuker is als ik me op allerlei zaken stort. De omslag kwam toen ik een jaar aan de University of Edinburgh studeerde. Er werd meer van me gevraagd, ik kreeg er lol in harder te werken. Ook voelde ik een verantwoordelijkheid: ik had een beurs gekregen om aan deze prestigieuze universiteit te studeren en wilde later iets waardevols kunnen doen met de opgedane kennis.

Daarna ging ik ook serieuzer aan de slag aan de UvA en kreeg meer intellectueel zelfvertrouwen. Mijn afstudeerdocent stimuleerde mij om mijn scriptie over Bob Dylan te schrijven. Zij leerde me dat je niet bang moet zijn om rare ideeën te volgen. Rond mijn afstuderen won ik een prijs voor beste nieuwe songwriter van Amsterdam en nam ik mijn debuutalbum op. Ik was student-af en meteen muzikant.

Mijn scriptie was een van de belangrijkste dingen in mijn leven. De afsluiting van mijn academische vorming en een heel persoonlijk werk over hoe ik over literatuur en muziek denk. Ik vond de academische wereld een aangename plek waar je kunt experimenteren met gedachten en nieuwe ideeën en veel inspiratie opdoet. Ik zou nooit kunnen doen wat ik nu doe zonder die intellectuele academische achtergrond.’

ters like William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. I transferred to the English programme after my first year. Back then I lived in my own little world and wasted a lot of time.

Now I realise life is more fun when you’re involved in all kinds of things.

The turning point came during my year at the University of Edinburgh.

Expectations were higher and I began to enjoy working harder. I also felt a sense of responsibility: I’d gotten a scholarship to study at this prestigious university and wanted to do something of value with what I’d learned. When I got back to the UvA I was more serious about my studies and developed greater intellectual confidence. My thesis supervisor inspired me to write my thesis on Bob Dylan. She taught me that you shouldn’t be afraid of strange ideas. Around the time I graduated I won a prize for the best new songwriter in Amsterdam and recorded my debut album. So I went straight from being a student to being a musician. My thesis has been a real milestone in my life. It was the culmination of my university education and a very personal piece on how I see literature and music.

For me, academia was a welcoming place where I could try out different ways of looking at things and gain new ideas and a wealth of inspiration. I would never have been able to do what I do now without that intellectual, academic background.’

Online community voor / for UvA alumni Omdat contacten en netwerken vaak ook langs digitale weg worden onderhouden, beschikt de academische gemeenschap van de UvA over een eigen online community voor alumni.

Op www.uva-alumni.nl kun je je eigen profielpagina aanmaken en op zoek gaan naar oud-studiegenoten. Je (adres)gegevens kun je gemakkelijk zelf wijzigen. Daarbij kun je aangeven welke gegevens zichtbaar mogen zijn voor leden van de community en welke gegevens niet zichtbaar zijn. De niet-zichtbare gegevens gebruiken we alleen om je te informeren vanuit de UvA, de Amsterdamse Universiteits-Vereniging en het A msterda ms Universiteitsfonds. Zo blijf je ook na een verhuizing het magazine SPUI ontvangen en kunnen we je op de hoogte houden van evenementen en bijzondere activiteiten. Uiteraard verstrekken we nooit persoonsgegevens aan partijen buiten de UvA. Je netwerk onderhouden en uitbreiden: doe het via de online community voor UvA-alumni!

Since contacts and networks are also often maintained through social networks, the academic community of the UvA has its own online alumni community. Members can create personal profiles and look up old classmates via the site.

Address details can easily be changed. And you can indicate if you want your information to be accessible to other members of the alumni community or to remain invisible. If you choose the latter, only the UvA, the University of Amsterdam Alumni Association and the Amsterdam University Fund can access your details. This means you will still receive SPUI magazine – even if you have moved – but also that we can keep you informed of events and special activities. Of course, we will never share your personal details with third parties.

Registreren en / Registering and

email for life Iedereen die afstudeert aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, ontvangt een e-mail met informatie over de manier waarop je je als gebruiker kunt registreren. Je hoeft die e-mail niet af te wachten: via www.uva-alumni.nl kun je zelf ook al je profiel activeren (kies ‘INLOGGEN’ en vervolgens ‘Nieuwe aanmelding’). Zodra je bent geregistreerd, kun je binnen de community een email for life instellen met forwarding functie. Je krijgt geen volledige mailbox, maar een adres volgens het stramien naam@alumni-uva.nl dat je aan vrienden, bekenden en relaties kunt doorgeven. E-mails die op dit adres binnenkomen, worden automatisch doorgestuurd naar je privé- of werkmail. Zo blijf je altijd bereikbaar voor oud-medestudenten en de universiteit.

Je kunt je alumni-mailadres bovendien gebruiken in situaties waarin het handig is om te laten zien dat je aan de UvA bent afgestudeerd, zoals bij sollicitaties.

Via www.uva-alumni.nl you can easily activate your profile yourself (choose ‘INLOGGEN’ and ‘Nieuwe aanmelding’). Once you’re registered you can set up an ‘email for life’ (with a forwarding function). Instead of a mailbox you’ll have an alumni email address (username@alumni-uva.nl), which you can pass on to friends, acquaintances and business contacts. Emails sent to this address will be automatically forwarded to your private or work email. That way you can always be reached by fellow alumni and the UvA. Ook een chimpansee zit graag droog Primatoloog Cleve Hicks ontdekte in Congo een populatie van 35 tot 65 duizend chimpansees die er een gezamenlijke cultuur op nahouden. De Amerikaan promoveerde op deze unieke en mysterieuze mensapen, waarover al meer dan een eeuw geruchten gingen. De apen die hij trof slapen niet allemaal in bomen, zoals normale chimpansees doen, maar bouwen ook grondnesten, zoals gorilla’s. Onderzoek leerde dat het wel degelijk om chimpansees gaat, die bovendien dezelfde tradities en gebruiken blijken te hebben. Verschillende groepen volgen eenzelfde patroon en dragen gedrag aan elkaar over. Behalve grondnesten maken deze chimpansees bladerkussens – ‘om de billen droog te houden’, vissen ze met lange stokken in mierenhopen en slaan ze slakkenhuizen, termietheuvels, schildpadden en noten kapot voor de eetbare delen. Normaal vertoont het gedrag van verschillende groepen mensapen wel overeenkomsten, maar daar werd nooit eerder een patroon in ontdekt. Hicks maakt voor het eerst aannemelijk dat de apen er een gezamenlijke en uniforme cultuur op nahouden. ‘Bij mensen verschilt cultuur per plaats. Chinezen eten met stokjes, westerlingen met mes en vork. Ook bij chimpansees zie je culturele verschillen in eetgewoonten en gereedschappen.’

Het onderzoeksgebied in Noord-Congo is moeilijk toegankelijk en wordt geteisterd door een bloedige burgeroorlog. De ontdekking van goud in de regio en de komst van duizenden mijnwerkers brachten sociale chaos en geweld. Hicks vreest voor een ramp. ‘Als we niets doen, valt het gebied in handen van kettingzagende stropers die olifanten neerschieten voor ivoor en chimpansees voor vlees.’ Zelf redde Hicks enkele weesapen en wil hij de krachten bundelen met andere onderzoekers, ngo’s en filmcrews. Om te voorkomen dat deze unieke habitat van chimpansees verloren gaat.

Even chimps prefer to stay dry

Whilst doing research in Congo, American primatologist Cleve Hicks discovered a population of between 35,000 and 65,000 chimpanzees that share a common culture. These unique and mysterious apes – whose existence had already been rumoured over a century ago – were to form the focus of Hicks’ PhD. Unlike ordinary chimpanzees, the apes Hicks encountered didn’t all sleep in trees; they built ground nests the way gorillas do. Further investigation confirmed that the nests’ owners were indeed chimpanzees and, moreover, that they shared traditions and customs. It seems that different groups follow the same patterns and transfer behaviours to each other. Not only do they build ground nests, they also make leaf cushions ‘to keep their backsides dry’, use long sticks to ‘fish’ in anthills, and smash snails, termite mounds, turtles and nuts to retrieve the edible bits inside. Whilst individual groups of apes were already known to exhibit behavioural similarities, never before has an actual pattern been observed. This makes Hicks the first scientist to provide convincing evidence that these primates maintain a shared and uniform culture. ‘With people, culture differs from place to place. The Chinese use chopsticks, Westerners a knife and fork. We see those same cultural variations in eating habits and tools among chimps.’

Centred in northern Congo, Hicks’ research site is difficult to access and plagued by a bloody civil war. The discovery of gold in the region and the arrival of thousands of mineworkers have brought chaos and violence in their wake.

Catastrophe looms, according to Hicks. ‘If we do nothing, the region will fall into the hands of chainsaw-wielding poachers who shoot down elephants for ivory and chimpanzees for meat.’ Having managed to rescue several orphaned chimps himself, Hicks hopes to join forces with other researchers, NGOs and film crews to prevent the loss of the chimpanzees’ unique habitat.

Rosa’s reisbeurs / Rosa’s Travel Grant Rosa van Beemt (links) doet de master International Development Studies. Tijdens haar bachelor Politicologie raakte zij geïnteresseerd in de wisselwerking tussen mens en natuur. Met steun van het Amsterdams Universiteitsfonds deed Rosa in Indonesië onderzoek voor haar masterscriptie. ‘Op Sumatra verbouwen veel rubberboeren op traditionele wijze rubber en houden tegelijkertijd de biodiversiteit in stand. Maar deze traditionele manier van werken wordt bedreigd door grote bedrijven die opkomen in de regio. Ik onderzocht de mogelijkheden en moeilijkheden van ecocertificering van de rubberplantages van kleine boeren.’

A student in the Master’s programme in International Development Studies, Rosa van Beemt (left) became interested in the dynamic between humans and nature whilst doing her Bachelor’s in Political Science. Supported by the Amsterdam University Fund, Rosa went to Indonesia to do research for her Master’s thesis. ‘Lots of rubber farmers on Sumatra work using traditional methods while maintaining biodiversity. Those traditional methods are now coming under threat from large, emerging companies in the region. I looked into the possibilities and problems that eco-certification poses for small-scale rubber plantations.’

University Day and UvA Thesis Prize

Elk jaar vindt op een zaterdag in het voorjaar de Universiteitsdag plaats: hét evenement voor alumni, vrienden en donateurs van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De Universiteitsdag biedt een gevarieerd programma dat in het teken staat van de uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring op allerlei terreinen van wetenschap, cultuur en maatschappij. ’s Ochtends houdt een toonaangevende UvA-wetenschapper een lezing in de Aula, ’s middags is er een kennisfestival met colleges, debatten en workshops in de Oudemanhuispoort. De dag trekt jaarlijks ruim duizend bezoekers.

Eén van de hoogtepunten van de dag is de uitreiking van de UvA-scriptieprijs voor de beste masterscriptie. In 2010 ging de eerste prijs naar Axel Arnbak, die een scriptie schreef over het verplicht opslaan van alle bel-, sms- en mailverkeer voor opsporingsdoeleinden. Deze ‘dataretentie’ staat op gespannen voet met de privacywetgeving en haalt bovendien weinig uit. Axel vertelt over zijn onderzoek en verdere ambities.

University Day, held annually on a Saturday in spring, is the event for alumni, donors and friends of the University of Amsterdam. University Day offers a varied programme focusing on the exchange of knowledge and experience in a wide range of scientific, cultural and social fields. An eminent UvA scholar gives a keynote lecture in the Aula in the morning. This is followed by a ‘knowledge festival’ of open classes, debates and workshops at other locations in the afternoon. The event attracts more than 1,000 visitors every year.

One of the highlights of University Day is the presentation of the UvA Thesis Prize for the best graduate thesis. In 2010 the first prize went to Axel Arnbak of the Faculty of Law for his thesis on data retention. By law, providers must store all telephone, sms and email data for detection purposes. However, this data storage requirement is not in accordance with European privacy legislation.

Moreover, in practice it doesn’t achieve very much. Here is what Axel has to say about his research and his future ambitions.

‘Sinds mijn afstuderen werk ik bij Bits of Freedom, een stichting die ijvert voor de privacy van burgers op internet. De besluitvorming rondom privacy is gestoeld op veel misvattingen en in de politiek weegt opportuniteit soms zwaarder dan wetenschappelijke rationaliteit. Sinds 9-11 zij we bang en willen we alle risico’s uitbannen. Daar probeert Bits of Freedom verandering in te brengen. Binnenkort spreek ik bij een grote hoorzitting van de Europese Commissie over de bewaarplicht van telecomgegevens. Dat wordt spannend: blijft de politiek alle Europeanen in de gaten houden?’

‘Since graduating I’ve been working at Bits of Freedom, a foundation dedicated to protecting the privacy of internet users. Decision-making on privacy issues is based on all sorts of misconceptions, with opportunism often winning out in politics over scientific rationalism. Since 9/11 we’ve grown fearful and want to eradicate all forms of risk. Bits of Freedom is working to change that. At a major upcoming hearing of the European Commission I’ll be speaking on the telecom data retention requirement. It’s a loaded issue: will governments keeping playing Big Brother to all Europeans?’
