« Quello dell’architetto è un mestiere d’avventura: un mestiere di frontiera, in bilico tra arte e scienza. Al confine tra invenzione e memoria, sospeso tra il coraggio della modernità e la prudenza della tradizione. L’architetto fa il mestiere più bello del mondo perché su un piccolo pianeta dove tutto è già stato scoperto, progettare è ancora una delle più grandi avventure possibili. » Renzo Piano

UNIVERSITA’ ARCHITETTURA CITTA’

CAMPUS BONARDI. POLITECNICO DI MILANO Università, architettura, città deals with the identification of a regenerative system for the qualification of the Bonardi Campus of Politecnico di Milano. The work comes from the observation of contingent problems, such as the growth in student numbers and the resulting lack of educational spaces and para-didactic spaces, and develops through the theme of connection with the city, the gap between the site and the city and the inadequate use of spaces. Our work does not pretend to offer an exhaustive project in response to the situation, but rather intends to outline a flexible functional-performance system able to absorb the current spatial variability in a single plan, which regulates the entire complex at the university level, architectural and urban. To do this we used a uniform methodology: a generative matrix, located in a strategic area and able to change depending on the situations in which creeps in order to give each space a unique character while maintaining the language and the method responsible for the original core. The process ended up with the design of an infrastructural building that is divided functionally and complementar both at a urban level and at a university level, assigning to the first level the role of connector and to the second the role of resting place. This approach has also the ability, through the use of a regular grid, to expand into the campus drawing a new city into the city, made up of streets, squares and buildings.

A STARTING POINT: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS Our analysis can not ignore the fact that we ourselves are users of Politecnico. As such we felt it was appropriate to move a criticism, which we decided to represent through a provocative image. Suppose you fill the tub with water, as represented in the picture above and in the conceptual model. It would happen then that all the underground level would remain unusable, only traversable by using a boat. Continuing to think according to this hypothesis, we wondered if indeed there would be substantial differences in the use of the site. It came naturally begin to observe and reflect on how the differente levels, which characterize the campus, are used by the students. As we see came to observe, there are two different streams at two levels: the 0 level, the city level, it is used by students as the main connective space, since access to the buildings were designed and intended to be at this hight. Returning to our image this state of things would not change. The level -1 (underground), however, appears as a hybrid space in which it is not obvious the function it was design for. In fact, this open space, potentially interesting, is underestimated and “filled” of secondary functions, not integrated and without a capacity to attract and aggregative. We noted then that is used as a connective space but, for the reasons listed above, in a secondary manner with respect to the level 0. The flooding enables to synthesize these characteristics since the water brings us back to a liquid floor smooth, homogeneous, something not conducive to the phenomenon of aggregation. So even in this case our operation would not change the state of things even in different form of connective means. This example has helped us to understand what could be a starting point for the development of the ‘tub’: focusing on the connection in the zero plane, a city plan, the plan less than one, the university level should take on a new role: a square university , place designed and intended for the organization and for the rest.

SCIENCE CENTER CITTA’ DELLA SCIENZA, NAPOLI The proposal for the new Science Center of Città della Scienza in Naples chooses as its settlement fundamental gesture the creation of a system of themed gardens able to merge the Piana di Bagnoli to the sea. The seaside area of Città della Scienza is characterized as an area for public use, a set of services that complements the exhibition offers contained in the buildings where Giardini della Scienza are designed, with a primary structure made up of four main themes: educational garden, water garden, the garden of history and culture and a Mediterranean garden. The ground floor of the building becomes a space with an urban character lying on a big technology plate. On top of this new landscape levitates the structure of the museum. A large volume reassembles the complexity of the existing buildings and at the same time collects the complex functional program of the Science Center. The first floor is entirely dedicated to the permanent exhibition areas and multi-purpose spaces. In coverage, both reacheable from the exhibition path and from the gardens, is the second refreshment bar with a large terrace overlooking the sea and the surrounding countryside. The entire project is built around the key issues of interaction and versatility.

THEATER STAGE FOR TRIENNALE TRIENNALE DI MILANO. MILAN The project is part of a context characterized by an arboreal predominant presence, inserted in a rigorous urban design but weakened in proximity of the Triennale. We decided to offset the strong organic matrix with the insertion of a completelyextraneous material, concreate, and to emphasize this choice vertically so as to return the road his main axe and propose a landmark element that would distinguish itself inside the trees. So the aim was then to outline a theater stage that would embody an ambivalent door towards the Trienniale and at the same time towards the city. The choice of material determines a protective and massive element, that tries to lie outside the organic lightness and caducity of the context. You enter a closed shell which, through an introvert route, opens on top to re-enter with a new perspective into the surrounding landscape.

NATURE. The presence of

trees dominates the urban surrounding and scale. Intangible and statuary, it already influnces the atmosphere in which the project is placed.

STONE. The stone as a hard and edgy element that draws the artificial soil in contrast with the natural gradient. Its geometry instantly introduces the presence of a different kind of space.

WOOD. Wood as a natural hot element that mingles in the context to draw the lateral walkways. An organic and sinuous texture extending the arboreal context horizontally.

CONCREATE. Concreate as mass and design. An artificial texture higly differentiated from the surrounding nature and that connotes itself as an hermetic and protective material designing primitive geometries.

CONNECTING BOUNDARIES PORTA GENOVA FS. MILAN BOUNDARY The strongest recognized characteristic of the site is the urban void, defined by the railway. The railway, as an infrastructural element, was the impulse for creating the surrounding city. We are dealing with a central space of the city that has never been a urban space, but has defined his urbanized context. DEVIDED CITY The city evolved, on one side facing the railway shape, on the other side, turning his back to it. The different responses of the city suggested different responses of the project. CONNECTION The main concept was to create connections through what once were the boundaries. The project aims to keep the memory of the void, but filling t in, making it urban for the first time.

The path of the taller combines a first part of study and research of a specific ‘architectural atmosphere’ with a second part of project and constructive investigation. Once chosen a certain ‘architectural atmosphere’ and analyzed in its own characteristics, the taller proposes a project that can reproduce these features within the design of a new pavilion. The development of the project, from its volumetric composition up to its technical details, it is done through the use of prototypes and models at different scale, with the aim of systematizing various steps of the project in case of a possible construction. This process of systematization has involved together all the various parts of the project, from the type of formwork for casting renforced concrete up to the single metal union between the various beams.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING PIAZZA BRIGADIERI. MILAN The project is located within an area redeveloped according to a masterplan that favors a series of residential buildings connected by perimetric gallery. The building shown here is one of the buildings that compose this residential block and tries to propose a summary of different residential typologies: the tower, the duplex and the balcony and the penthouse. As a whole, the building has a ground floor commercial which then develop the first 3 floors in simplex and duplex format. In correspondence with the detachment of the tower, the building houses a gym, continuing then only in the tower through larger apartments The composition of the faรงade, clad in prefabricated reinforced concrete panels , seeks to give a messy effect, which is opposed to the structural rigidity of the floors, elements that mark horizontally left to view the different plans. The truss plans simplex-duplex has been inserted to allow the most light possible for the different apartments.

MOVED BY BEAUTY

SAGRADA FAMILIA EXPOSICION.

he interior of the Temple described by Gaudí: "The columns in the main nave will be palm trees: they are the trees of glory of the sacrifice and martyrdom. Those of the transepts will be laurels: they are the trees of the glory of intelligence. The central pillars will split into five simple supports, and these into others, up to the highest gallery, where the last branches of the tree will join and rise into the vaults, which will be the leaves of the great tree that joins together the people to praise the Lord.” The stunning beauty and bigness of the nave, rather than intimidate us, appeals to us: "human beings stand at the point of intersection between two gravitational fields. First, there is the force of gravity which pulls us down – towards selfishness, falsehood and evil; the gravity which diminishes us and distances us from the heights of God. On the other hand there is the gravitational force of God’s love: the fact that we are loved by God and respond in love attracts us upwards. Man finds himself between this two fold gravitational force; everything depends on (our escaping the gravitational field of evil and) becoming free to be attracted completely by the gravitational force of God, which makes us authentic, elevates us and grants us true freedom." Benedict XVI. On entering the temple, people stays silence and amazed. So much beauty broadens the heart; everyone wants to receive all this love and approach through some sort of reverse gravity. You, being small, are moved by this force, where the space is prolonged further than the vaults and the columns, in search of the infinite.

BEING COLLECTIF MADE IN VITROLLES PLACE DE PROVANCE. VITROLLES. FRANCE This thesis work wants to be a meditation that, starting from the meeting with french collective collectif ETC, reflects the innovation of a partecipative architecture which, starting from the relationship with the citizens, investigates the theme of ‘living the city’ in contemporary reality. The continuous and rapid transformation of the urban fabric has seen the gradual abandonment of pubblic spaces, bringing young architects to wonder about the future of these places, and directly dealing with this problem, to develop new regenerative approaches. The path places alongside the experience on the project site, made with some collectives in Vitrolles, France, a series of interviews, theoretical considerations and examples of built architectures that try to interpret this architectural phenomenon reflecting its philosophy, the processes of intervention and targets.

MADE IN VITROLLES

plateforme commune table, cousine, ateliers

Marseille-Provence has been named European Capital of Culture for the year 2013, the entire region, including the town of Vitrolles, has been involved in this great event. Inside the very extensive program of events offered by the city of Vitrolles were also called the association Bellastock, the collectif EXYZT, the collectif and collectif Les Saprophytes The Saprophytes ETC These four collective have collaborated on a major redevelopment of the city center through the construction of small-scale architecture, urban objects, through the organization of meetings and workshops, but mostly through dialogue and coexistence with citizens. The project lasted about 2 months ending in July with a big festival-workshop which involved students of architecture from all over France.

THE CAROUSEL The project grows just a-side the bus-station, fulcre of public transport in Vitrolles. This site logically rappresents movement. The carousel impersonified this movement towards the four cardinal points by his moving platform, which hosts 4 different chair typologies to rappresents north, south, east and west. The fixed base receives the steel elements which support the roof structure. The frame and floor douglas wood supplied from a sawmill in the Dr么me (wood is scarce in the Bouches-du-Rhone). The different pieces are cut out and attached in place de Provence, around the collective platform. They are then transported 80 meters to the bus station site and assambled.
