Matthews gives back for the holidays helps local families in need

The Matthews community once again came together to help families in need this holiday season. The Matthews HELP Center together with the Matthews Police Department and other community partners helped collect hundreds of toys, bikes, games, and more for children throughout our area.

Items are collected and put on display in a temporary ‘store’ set up in Town Hall. Parents, who are pre-screened by the HELP Center, are given vouchers to shop in the store and select gifts for their children.

Over 100 Matthews HELP Center volunteers come together on what they call “Elf Day” to set up the shopping experience.

This year community donations served 62 families which included 78 children and 52 teenagers. Each teenager received $125 in gift cards.

help shape the future of Matthews!

Join the Community Advisory Committee

The Town of Matthews is beginning the process of developing a new Comprehensive Plan that will establish a long-term vision for Matthews and help inform decisions on individual development proposals. The process will extend through 2023 and will include extensive citizen engagement. One of the first steps in the project is to form a Community Advisory Committee, whose members will serve as ambassadors for the plan by providing information and encouraging others to participate. The Committee will meet approximately four times throughout the year, beginning in late February/ March and continuing through the end of the process in late 2023. Advisory Committee members should reside in Matthews (either homeowners or renters), be available to attend meetings as assigned, and be excited about actively promoting community participation in the project.

For more information or to request an application to serve on the committee, contact Senior Planner Nadine Bennett at nbennett@matthewsnc.gov.

Greylock Ridge Road Extension Project Moving Forward

The Town of Matthews continues work with NCDOT on a project to extend Greylock Ridge Road from East John Street to East Charles Street. The new roadway will cover approximately 0.27 miles. A 10-foot multi-use path will be constructed along the east side of Greylock Ridge Road Extension and a 5-foot sidewalk along the west side.

A public meeting will be held on Thursday, January 26 from 5 - 7 pm at Matthews Town Hall. Residents are invited to attend to learn more about this project.
