We kicked off the holiday season on Saturday with the first ever Winter Wonderlights event in Stumptown Park. The holiday tree and the entire park were illuminated in colorful lights by Santa himself. If you couldn’t make it to the event, be sure to visit Stumptown Park as the lights will be on nightly throughout the month of December.

A new fire station is planned for Matthews. Fire Station 3, to be located at 3017 Matthews Mint Hill Road, will enable the fire, rescue, and emergency medical services of Matthews Fire & EMS to be much closer to residents in this area of town.
The new fire station will increase the percentage of Matthews residents living within 2.5 miles of fire/EMS resources to 87% (up from the current 68%). A third fire station has been part of the Fire Department’s plans since 2005.
The Town recently contracted with SAMET Corp. for pre-construction services, which includes conceptual design work and surveying of the proposed site. The Town Board will consider authorizing full design and construction in 2023. If approved as scheduled, the new station could be open as early as summer/fall 2024.
A meeting was held last week with residents in close proximity to the new station. Stay tuned for more information including upcoming public meetings.
Matthews Fire Station 1 is located at 236 S. Trade Street. Fire Station 2 is located at 1201 Crews Road.

The 2023 property revaluation is in process within Mecklenburg County. Revaluation is the process of all property (land and buildings) within a taxing jurisdiction (in this case Mecklenburg County) being revalued to its current market value as of an established date. North Carolina state law requires revaluation at least every eight years. The Mecklenburg Board of Country Commissioners advanced to a four-year cycle. The purpose of a revaluation is to ensure fair and equitable assessments updated to current market levels.
Elderly or disabled residents who meet income requirements may receive an exclusion of $25,000 or 50% of the property’s taxable value, up to one acre. Disabled veterans may also receive assistance through a homestead exclusion. More information about these programs can be found at reval.mecknc.gov.
