MANAGER’S MESSAGE This spring has been an unprecedented and uncertain time for people all around the globe. In Matthews, we have been doing our best to keep residents informed and uplifted during this time.

To prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in our Town, we have taken a number of precautionary measures, including cancelling events, closing parks and public facilities, and closing all Town buildings to the public. We highly encourage residents to comply with the stay at home order issued by Mecklenburg County, as well as the order from the State of North Carolina. With these measures, we hope that operations will return to normal as soon as possible.

We know this has been a difficult and trying time for small businesses in our community. On our Town of Matthews Facebook page, we have been sharing resources for businesses, and promoting ways for our residents and

visitors to support small businesses during this time. Be sure to follow that page to stay up-to-date on the latest news, and to find ways to stay connected as a community.

On the upside, orders to stay home, along with the closing of North Carolina public schools through May 15th, have allowed families to spend more time together. In the past two weeks we’ve seen more families out in their neighborhoods walking together, playing in the driveway together, and working on their yards or garages together.

The “togetherness” has reminded us of what it means to maintain the sense of community and closeness in our own homes, and I hope you have felt the positive ripple effects of this, too.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the Town if you don’t know where to turn for assistance. We will get through this together.

COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) UPDATES The safety of our community is our top priority, and the Town of Matthews is actively working on precautionary measures in response to the emerging and rapidly changing situation with Coronavirus.

Mecklenburg County has issued a Stay at Home Order effective Thursday, March 26 at 8:00 AM.

SUPPORT MATTHEWS BUSINESSES DURING THE STAY AT HOME ORDER The Town of Matthews held a video conference call with local businesses to provide information and resources.

The goal of the conference call is to provide business owners with as much information and resources as possible.

Matthews Mayor John Higdon started the meeting with a warm introduction.

Roland Bibeau, President of Novant Matthews Medical Center, followed with an explanation of the importance of the Stay at Home Order. In the meeting, we highlighted resources for local businesses, such as information on Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

STAY AT HOME Mecklenburg County has issued a Stay at Home Order. All Mecklenburg County residents must remain in their homes through April 29th as part of an effort to reduce the number of new COVID-19 cases in North Carolina.

Board of Commissioners and Advisory Board Meetings The Town Board meeting scheduled for Monday, April 13th is currently planned to be conducted via Zoom. Visit www.matthewsnc.gov for more details. All Town Advisory Board meetings are canceled at least through May 8th.

Residents are encouraged to follow advice from public health officials and medical professionals.

As this is a rapidly changing situation, the Town will continue to assess how to best meet the needs of our community while following expert advice, including that from healthcare officials, emergency management, and other government agencies.

All Town sponsored events, activities, and programming are canceled through May 8.

Reinstatement after May 8 will be assessed closer to that date.

Town Facilities

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has the latest information for the state of North Carolina. Please visit their website at www.ncdhhs.gov/coronavirus.

All Town buildings including Matthews Town Hall, the Matthews Community Center, Crews Recreation Center, and the McDowell Arts Center are closed to the public until further notice. All Town playgrounds and public restrooms are also closed. Town operations related to Administration, Planning & Zoning, Finance, Human Resources, Public Works, and Parks & Recreation continue but with reduced in-person capacity. If you have a need, please continue to reach out to the appropriate department for service.
