here are many exciting events happening this Fall in the Town of Matthews. Kids in Nature Day returns on Saturday, October 12 at Squirrel Lake Park. Join us for nature walks, animal explorations, nature crafts, and much more. We are also hosting our annual event, Not-So-Spooky Halloween, on October 26th. There will be a showing of the family-friendly film The Haunted Mansion starting at dusk. Find more information about the event on page 4.

he town is thankful to Robert Sebrosky, who has kindly donated

a Rhombicuboctahedron sculpture and accompanying sign to the Town of Matthews. If you would like to see it, the sculpture and sign are located along the Four Mile Creek Greenway. You can read more about the Rhombicuboctahedron on the bottom of this page.

O

ver the summer, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) began work on the I-485 Express Lanes project. This project will have a great impact on Matthews. More information on that on page 5.

New Sculpture Along the Greenway

R

obert Sebrosky has kindly donated a Rhombicuboctahedron sculpture and accompanying sign to the Town of Matthews.

A rhombicuboctahedron has eight triangular faces and 18 square faces. There are 24 identical vertices, with one triangle and three squares meeting at each vertex. We invite you to visit and learn more about the sculpture, which is located along the Four Mile Creek Greenway near the entrance to Squirrel Lake Park.

YARD WASTE GUIDELINES Fall is here! With the leaves falling, yard work will be here soon, too. Yard waste pick-up continues with your weekly trash pickup from Republic Services. The Town of Matthews defines yard waste as brush, tree and shrub trimmings, leaves and grass trimmings, and other materials accumulated as the result of the care of lawns, shrubbery, vines and trees. Please review the key guidelines for yard waste pickup below.

Four tips to keep in mind: 1. Schedule - Yard waste is picked up once a week on your scheduled trash pickup day. Yard waste must be placed at the curb.

2. Limitations - Leaves and grass clippings must be bagged in clear bags, or other bags left open so the driver can see the contents. Each residence is limited to a maximum of 20 bags per week, and each bag must weigh less than 50 pounds.

3. Branches - All branches and limbs must be cut and stacked in small piles. Branches must be cut in lengths of four feet or less and can be no larger than five inches in diameter.

4. Containment - Do not leave bagged yard waste, tree limbs, or branches blocking the sidewalk or in the street.

Fire Department Open House Matthews Fire & EMS will hold an open house on Saturday, October 12th, from 10 AM to 1 PM at Fire Station 1 (236 S. Trade Street).

Visitors can learn more about becoming a volunteer firefighter, emergency medical technician, fire corp member, or explorer.

This is a great opportunity to tour the station, check out the apparatus, wear the gear, and handle the equipment.
