Your Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resource Department is thrilled to offer an exciting lineup of activities designed to bring families and friends together, celebrate the great outdoors and just have some fun.

The team has crafted programs and events for all ages and interests. Many of the programs from past years are back, while there are also lots of new opportunities to be a part of. This summer is a chance to take a class that you’ve always wanted to try, learn a new skill, or take that moment to enjoy nature.

We use an online registration system, RecDesk, for the majority of our summer camps. If you are unable to use the system, please call us at the facility where the camp is taking place.

The best way to register is online beginning February 3!

You can register in person at Crews Recreation Center or Matthews Community Center. You can also call either facility and register over the phone.

To qualify for a resident rate, you must be a resident of the Town of Matthews and reside in zip code 28105.

If the camp is canceled by the Town of Matthews prior to the start of the camp, participants will receive a 100% refund.

If the participant withdraws 15+ days prior to the beginning of camp, there will be 100% refund.

If the participant withdraws from camp between 7 and 14 days of the beginning of camp, there will be a 90% refund.

If the participant withdraws from the camp 6 days or less before the beginning of the camp or after the camp has started, there will be no refund.

Payment is due in full at the time of registration.

We offer financial assistance for any child who is on free or reduced lunch.

We offer a 30% reduced rate. You must show proof of free or reduced lunch for this rate.

What a great way to celebrate the arrival of summer!

Join us to make fun and colorful art projects inspired by the beach, sea life, mountains, camping, bugs, and delicious treats we like to enjoy during the warm season. Work with techniques such as drawing, collage, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, printmaking, and assemblage.

Maximize your experience at this camp by building a home for a fairy or gnome. Shape your home using cardboard and paper-mache. Furnish and decorate it with a variety of materials such as wooden sticks, twigs, fabric, yarn, recovered objects, paint and even fairy lights! Complement your design by making a beautiful garden around it, and finally, create your own little friends to live in their new place.

Maximize your kitchen experience in this fun and hands-on culinary program, which focuses on presenting recipes made with nutritious, healthy ingredients. Be prepared to be inspired to appreciate good food, to learn that healthy food can be delicious, and to begin developing lifelong cooking skills.

Embark on this instructive and fun adventure around the world to learn about the art of different peoples and cultures. Free your creativity using mixed media techniques to make beautiful art projects inspired by traditional folk art from places like Africa, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Australia, China, India, Brazil, Greece, and Egypt.

Discover ways to produce art in multiples and create your own one-of-a-kind prints! In this camp, you will play and experiment with different kinds of printmaking such as gelli plate mono-printing, relief block printing, dry-point etching, collagraph, stenciling, stamping, and marbling.

Do you like creating little spaces for your dolls or toy pets to live? Do you like to embellish their space with little furniture and decor items? Then this camp is for you! Join us in decorating a two-story dollhouse. Create your design by choosing your style & colors, sketching your furniture, and selecting the accessories to bring your concept to life using a variety of materials such as cardboard, wooden sticks, fabric, paint, paper, found objects as well as fairy lights.

Travel with us through outer space on this artistic journey to the stars. Build a space diorama with planets, stars, astronauts and spaceships using paper-mache, assemblage, collage and paint. Create your own version of a goofy alien and play an exciting rocket race game where you will build little projectiles and blast them off outdoors.

Prepare to stir up the most delicious-looking slime recipes on the Seven Seas! You and your STEAM Team have been chosen to be slime sous chefs on the S.S. Slimetopia cruise ship and it’s up to you to "feed" the slime hungry passengers morning, noon and night!

CAMMP is a full day camp with 1/2 day of mathematics and 1/2 day of robotics and coding.

CAMMP's philosophy is to enhance children's understanding of mathematics, robotics and coding and its connections to thinking, reasoning and real-world problem solving.

Craft and create while exploring colors, textures and shapes to make fun and exciting projects throughout the week! Campers will indulge in a variety of mediums like painting, drawing, collage and more to create their crafts. Students will also practice essential skills like cutting and gluing to help prepare them for the upcoming school year.

The McDowell Arts Center is located across from the Matthews Community Center and features a FREE public art gallery upstairs where local and regional artists feature their professional artwork. Our Gymstars Multi-Sport Camps focus on exposing young athletes to a variety of sports and activities while bringing out the best in each individual athlete.

Local basketball legend, Muggsy Bogues, returns to Crews Recreation Center this summer with basketball camps for children ages 6-14. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt.

Led by Muggsy, camp counselors have developed a 5day camp curriculum focused on fundamental basketball skills: ball handling, defense, free throws, footwork and rebounding. In addition to the variety of skill development drills, campers will play competitive games and the camp will conclude with a tournament. Campers will not only learn the fundamentals of basketball, but they will also learn character and leadership techniques that can be used outside of basketball.

This week-long camp will give campers a chance to learn from Muggsy’s staff of experienced counselors, as well as the former NBA great and Basketball Hall of Fame nominee himself. Campers will participate in a variety of skill development drills, games and a winner take all tournament, which will not only teach them about basketball, but allow them to learn in a fun and positive environment. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt and backpack.

Coach Conroy's All-Sports Camp is for ages 6-14. The co-ed camp, which groups campers by age, features a wide range of sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, and more, all led by local athlete coaches. Campers enjoy daily activities designed to build sports skills and foster a love for physical activity.

New this year is Junior All-Sports Camp for ages 4-6, focusing on introducing younger children to sports.

Ready to put your skills to the test? Join our instructors as they guide you through the fundamentals of mechanisms that will inspire your creativity, then, it’s your turn to innovate! Working with unique design parameters, you'll construct structures and vehicles, push them to their limits, and see what they can withstand. Compete head-to-head and put real-world concepts into action with exciting LEGO® challenges!

Learn about the engineering principles behind motors, gears, and everything that vrooms and zooms!

This Beginner Level Volleyball Camp is designed to teach the rules of the game and fundamental skills in passing, setting, hitting, and serving to athletes new to the sport. Campers will learn the proper technique for each skill, as well as offensive and defensive coverage, through drills and practice games. Drills will be adjusted according to each player’s skill level.

The Intermediate/Advanced Volleyball Camp is designed to improve fundamental skills for athletes in passing, setting, hitting, and serving. Campers will learn offensive and defensive coverage as they develop their skills through drills and practice games. Drills will be adjusted according to each player’s skill level.

Are you a casual gamer or an aspiring Esports athlete?

If so, this Esports/Video Gaming summer camp is for you. Under the supervision of experienced “Game Coaches” campers will have an opportunity to learn strategies, improve their skills individually and work in teams, boosting their overall game sense and abilities as players. Teamwork is a very important component of each camp, and campers learn how to become effective teammates and leaders. Some games that will be played include: NBA 2K, Madden, FIFA, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Minecraft and Rocket League. Daily game genres will be determined based on the Esport athletes/campers’ interests.

Experience the synergy of cooking and exercise classes as we combine the two topics into a cohesive program can be incredibly beneficial. Participants will engage in a workout followed by a cooking session focused on preparing healthy meals, as well as get important nutritional information. This approach not only provides practical skills but also instills a sense of community among participants. Sharing healthy recipes and cooking techniques can foster motivation and accountability. Equipment for cooking and exercise will be provided.

Do you believe in magic? Would you like to amaze your friends and family? Beginner magicians will learn and perform tricks each day, create their own props, and view cool demonstrations! They will also get to participate in a magic show at the end of the week!

Chess Wizards has been teaching the game of chess since 2002. Join us this summer for tons of challenging chess lessons, exciting games, and cool prizes. Improve your chess skills, meet new friends, and work out your most powerful muscle - your brain! Camp includes fun team chess games (like Corner Chess), recess time (of course), snacks, tournaments, and puzzles. Each camper receives a T-shirt, trophy, and puzzle folder.

Join AYSO PLAY! Soccer Camp this summer for an immersive soccer experience led by certified youth coaches. Engage in daily small group sessions, allowing personalized guidance through soccer skills and challenges. Each day is themed, focusing on technical skills and broader soccer concepts for an enriching experience. Be the next Alex Morgan or Landon Donavan to PLAY AYSO!

This camp teaches the Olympic Sport of Fencing. Our fencing camp is great for both new fencers and those who already have previous experience. For some activities, Fencers will be divided into groups based on experience; new fencers learning basic skills while returning fencers continue to improve their skills. All campers will work and play together while making new friends and having lots of fun. Our camper to coach/counselor ratio is very low which allows campers to have a high-quality experience. Coach Boris Khurgin (Master of Sports in Fencing – the highest coaching classification) will be instructing campers on the fundamental footwork, blade work and tactics involved in this fast-paced Olympic sport. Equipment will be provided.

In partnership with Charlotte All Star Gymnastics and Cheerleading, Crews Recreation Center will offer a FUNdamental cheer program designed for athletes ages 5-12. Your athlete will learn the fundamentals of cheer, dance, tumbling and stunts in a non-competitive format.

Campers will also learn the basic motion for cheers and chants! As the week progresses, the athletes will learn a mini routine for them to perform for all parents on Friday.

Additionally, all campers will receive a camp t-shirt.

Camp meets at the Matthews Community Center

Half day indoor camp. All materials are included.

Campers need to bring a water bottle and a snack each day.

Explore the wonders of nature through crafts, activities, games and backyard critter encounters. Participants will grow crystals, make fossil replicas, compete with squirrels for survival, change color like a chameleon and more.

In this fun hands-on camp week, preschoolers will discover how, why, and where things grow, how weather affects our gardens and the basic science of seeds.

They will also get acquainted with the many “creepy crawly” inhabitants of the garden & how those insects help make gardens so beautiful!

Matthews Resident: $160 Ages 4-6

Non-Resident: $170

Children will have fun with hands-on experiments that will increase their understanding of our good ship Earth!

They will learn how animals are camouflaged and go on the hunt for scents and tracks as they take a walk on the wild side of science, and discover what adversely affects our planet as we explore conservation.

Matthews Resident: $190 Ages 5-9

AGES 6-11 | 6 YEAR OLDS MUST HAVE COMPLETED KINDERGARTEN Full day camps. Campers need to bring a nut-free lunch and a water bottle each day, unless otherwise notified by camp staff. Snacks are provided.

FUNshine and FUNshine X-Treme Week camp hours are from 9:00am-5:00pm.

We offer pre-camp (7:30am-9:00am) & post-camp (5:00pm-6:00pm) care for an additional $40/week.

Camp FUNshine is a full-day camp that offers a variety of themed weeks! Field trips are centered around the weekly theme and allow campers to have a new and exciting experiences. Registration price includes all field trips and swim trips during the week. Complete camp info, including the field trip schedule and camp location will be found this Spring at www.matthewsfun.com.

All the fun of Camp FUNshine PLUS a field trip every day!

Campers MUST be 8 years old prior to the first day of X-Treme Week due to field trip age minimums.

At the Matthews Community Center, we own and operate the Fullwood Theater, a variety of classroom and studio spaces, large event rooms, and a dance space.

Facility Rentals: We can accommodate anything from a small, intimate meeting to a full stage production.

The McDowell Arts Center offers art programs and classes year-round and art-based summer camps during the summer months.

A full art gallery displays different local artist groups each month upstairs.

Crews offers a full-size gymnasium and large multi-purpose room with open gym sports, activities, classes and camps offered in both spaces.

Facility Rentals: We are a great place to host your birthday parties, baby and wedding showers, anniversary parties, family reunions and meetings.

We also rent our full-size gymnasium to individuals, groups or schools for recreational purposes (i.e. basketball, volleyball, soccer, parties & etc.).
