bicolour miyawaki miniforest
Matthew nayda a1706845 arch 7037, experiential onshore studio Adelaide is currently going through an environmental crisis through the dehabitation of local fauna. Native greenery has been extensively cut back, so much so that metropolitan Adelaide consists of only 10% public park land. This project is designed as a test project to judge the efficacy of a catalogue of native plant selections as they grow, and whether native fauna is attracted to the area. By employing the ‘Miyawaki Method,’ a mini forest will be quickly established through the planting of many native seedlings together and letting nature take its course. Minimal human interaction should occur after the plants become established. The aim of this project is to gather a catalogue of native plants, across a variety of scales, which work together to improve the ecology of a site, no matter its scale. The design principles for this project see that only red and purple native species of plant will be used on site, attracting a range of animals, particularly birds and bees. Layers of greenery (ground cover, shrubs, small trees, and canopy trees) will be vertically stacked, to provide ample habitation for local fauna, particularly birds, as well as to improve the microclimate of the site. When planting vegetation, red groundcover will be paired with purple shrubs and small trees, and vice versa, to create a visually appealing result.

should this project prove to be a success, this method can be transferred to sites surrounding greater adelaide, and is particularly well suited to the median strips of port rd, due to the sites being of similar size, having the same established tree varieties, and having similar soil conditions.

Lightest shades of grey will be covered in ground cover at maturation.
darker patches will become the location of shrubs and small trees at maturation.
the darkest spots will be the planting locations of canopy trees at maturation..
a variety of gum and eucalypt trees will shade the site in the late evening, as well as provide some winter wind protection
river red gum
thicket of native eucalyptus trees to the east of the site provides noise + wind protection, encouraging local fauna to the area
