SKYHAWK INJURY REPORT Senior All-OVC center fielder Megan Williams will see limited action in the Skyhawks opening weekend, following emergency apedidicitis surgery two weeks prior.
SKYHAWKS IN SEASON OPENERS UNDER CANARY UT Martin is an even 4-4 in season openers during the Canary era. Each of the first four seasons (2002-05) opened in tournament play at the Ole Miss Invitational in Oxford, Miss and went 1-4 in the opening game. Then in 2006 and 2007 the Skyhawks opened play at Southeastern Louisiana’s Invitational Tournament where they split the openers. The last two seasons the Skyhawks have kicked off the season at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic and are undefeated in opening games there after downing Lipscomb in 2008 and Akron last year.
SIX NEW FACES UT Martin opens the 2010 season with six newcomers on the roster. The Skyhawks welcome three true freshmen to the roster and three junior college transfers. A trio of Tennesseans make up the freshman class but Becca Williams from Murfreesboro comes in with the most familiarity of the program as she is the younger sister of senior center fielder Megan Williams. Victoria Wallace of Nashville and Leevie Greenwood from Leabon round out the Skyhawk freshman class. The Skyhawks three transfers come from all over the country to UT Martin. Jordan Garrett, from Clovis, N.M. joins the Skyhawks from Volunteer State Community College, while Kalah Mathis of Chapel Hill, Tenn., played at Columbia State Community College the last two season. Rounding out the new transfers is Kate Vanderham from Brookeville, Fla., who previously played at Florida Community College at Jacksonville.
CANARY NOW OVC’s No. 5 UT Martin head coach Donley Canary opens the 2010 season at the No. 5 all-time winningest coach in Ohio Valley Conference history. He begins the year with exactly 250 career wins. His milestone win came in dramatic fashion as it was in the Skyhawks OVC Tournament championship game win over Southeast Missouri, giving them the program’s firstever conference crown and trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Canary moved in the No. 5 all-time spot last season when he recorded career win No. 236 with the doubleheader sweep of Southeast Missouri. Canary passed former Middle Tennessee head coach Karen Green (235 career wins) for the fifth spot. He reached the OVC coaching top five in only eight seasons, and is only 17 wins away from fourth. Canary is the only member of the top five to who has been at the helm for under 11 years.
FIVE ALL-CONFERENCE SKYHAWKS RETURN FOR 2010 Three Skyhawks who earned All-OVC accolades last season will return to the lineup in 2010. OVC Freshman of the Year and All-OVC First Team member Jenny Bain returns to the infield, while fellow All-OVC First Team member Megan Williams will take her normal spot in center field. In left field will be All-OVC Second Team member Laura Roberts. Also returning at third base will be senior Megan Van Arsdale who earned a spot on the OVC All-Tournament Team alongside with Laurie Lindow who will return as the Skyhawks top catcher.
ALABAMA STATE HORNET INVITATIONAL SNOWED OUT UT Martin was scheduled to open the season for a second consecutive year at the Alabama State Hornet Invitational, but mother nature and a heavy dose of wintry precipitation forced the cancelation of the tournament.
SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA LION CLASS RECAP UT Martin won the Southeastern Lion Classic for the second time in five years, going 5-0 in both the 2010 and 2006 tournaments. At the Lion Classic, UT Martin hit 13 home runs with three each by Jenny Bain and Laura Roberts. The Skyhawks picked up opening day wins over Grambling and defending SWAC champion Mississippi Valley State, then downed Saint Louis and Jackson State on day two. In the Jackson State game, the Skyhawks got home runs from both Megan and Becca Williams, marking the first time the sisters hit homers in the same game for UT Martin. The Skyhawks then completed the Lion Classic sweep by defeating host Southeastern Louisiana in the tournament finale.

ROBERTS BREAKS AWAY AS NEW HOME RUN CHAMP
SKYHAWKS AT THE CHATTANOOGA FROST CLASSIC
Senior Laura Roberts hit three home runs on opening day to tie and later break the UT Martin home run record. She tied the record on a fourth inning two-run homer against 2009 SWAC champion and NCAA participant Mississippi Valley State, then followed it up in the sixth inning with the record breaking home run. Robert’s record breaking shot was also of the two-run variety and also proved to be the eventual gamewinner. The record breaking dinger for Roberts was No. 22 of her career, surpassing previous home run champions Nicole Davis (2002-05) and Kristin Runyan (2003-05) who both hit 21.
The Skyhawks will be making their fifth appearance in the Chattanooga tournament, now called the Frost Classic, and their first since the 2007 season. UT Martin will be looking to ride its early season success to change its fortunes at the Frost Classic where it has an all-time record of 6-13. UT Martin firs appeared in the 1999 Chattanooga Choo Choo Classic where it went a disappointing 0-4. It then returned in 2004, where it had its best showing by going 3-2 with wins over Chattanooga, North Texas and Buffalo. The Skyhawks also played in the 2006 Frost Classic, going 1-6, before making their last appearance in 2007 where they went 2-3 with wins over Toledo and Oakland. Many of the current Skyhawk seniors will remember the 2007 Frost Classic when they were freshmen, but none will like Laura Roberts who went 7-of-15 to hit .467 with five RBI in her Frost Classic debut.
LONG BALL SISTER ACT UT Martin’s pair of sisters, senior Megan Williams and freshman Becca Williams, both recorded home runs in the Skyhawks’ 6-4 win over Jackson State at the Southeastern Lion Classic. Megan Williams, a reigning All-OVC First Team member, connected on her home run with a first inning solo-shot to lead off the game. Sister Becca then got into the act with a solo-fifth inning homer, the first of her collegiate career.
JENNY BAIN NAMED OVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Bain was named OVC Player of the Week, Feb. 22 after she went 11-of-18 at the plate to hit .611 at the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic with three home runs, nine RBI and two doubles. In the tournament, she recorded at least two hits, one RBI and a run scored in all five games. She only had one game without scoring multiple runs, and had three games where she knocked in multiple RBI. Her three homers at the Lion Classic moved her to No. 6 all-time in UT Martin history only give games into her sophomore season. Bain also went error free in the field at short stop with six assists and four put outs.
PAIJ LINTZ NAMED OVC PITCHER OF THE WEEK Lintz was named the OVC Pitcher of the Week Feb. 22, after she tossed 8.1 innings at the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Classic, picking up two wins and giving up only two hits, while striking out more than half the batters she faced (15-of-27). She tossed a 4.0 inning shutout against Grambling, giving up just one hit and striking out six of the 14 batters faced in the five inning game. Lintz pitched 4.1 innings of relief versus Jackson State, fanning nine batters.

HEAD COACH Donley Canary has been head softball coach at UT Martin for eight seasons. During that time he has not only become the programs all-time winningest coach, but also transformed the Skyhawk softball team into a very respected and perennial Ohio Valley Conference power along with guiding the program to its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 2009 after capturing the 2009 OVC Tournament title. After eight seasons, Canary entered 2010 with a 250-212-1 won-loss-tie record and his teams have advanced to the OVC tournament as the No. 3 seed twice, and No. 4 seed three times, plus once as a No. 2 and No. 5 seed. Canary has coached 49 All-OVC selections in his eight seasons. Ten of those have been named to the All-OVC First Team, 15 were named All-OVC Second Team, three were All-OVC Honorable Mentions along with 13 named to the OVC All-Tournament Team, including one OVC Tournament MVP. Canary has also had nine OVC All-Newcomer team members which was newly created for the 2006 season. Canary is currently the fifth all-time winningest coach in the Ohio Valley Conference with 250 career wins and is fourth winningest among active coaches in the conference. Of the active coaches on the all-time winningest list, Canary is the only one who has been at the helm of his team for less than 10 seasons. Canary’s teams have also excelled in the classroom, earning the OVC Academic Award in 2005 along with currently being the team that owns the highest grade point average over the last five years according to the National Fast pitch Coaches Association. Canary came to UT Martin from Tennessee Tech where he held various positions in athletics since 1993. He served as director of athletic fund-raising and assistant softball coach during the 2000-01 seasons, amassing a 44-20 record. Canary also served as an assistant baseball coach for the Golden Eagles from 1993 -2000 season. During that time Tech claimed a 193-235-1 record highlighted by a regular season and tournament Ohio Valley Conference championship in 1997. Canary is a former Academic All-American baseball player from 1973-77 and graduate of Tennessee Tech University. He was inducted into the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1997 in recognition of his outstanding playing career. An All-OVC outfielder, Canary led the Golden Eagles with a .429 batting average and was named All-South and received the Academic All-American award following the 1976 season. Canary was the top batter in the Golden Eagle line up during the 1974 and 1976 seasons. In 1974, he led Tech with a .327 average at the plate and 1976 average of .429 still sits as third all-time in Golden Eagle baseball history. Canary also sits at fourth in walks with 39 and sixth in at-bats per strikeout with 27.2. On the career walks list, Canary still holds the top spot with 134 free passes during his tenure. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in 1980. Canary and his wife, Jenny (also a Tennessee Tech graduate), have one son, David who is currently an assistant coach at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Jenny currently works in Skyhawk Athletics as the department’s ticket manager.
