Instrumentation: Mezzo-soprano (range G4 to G5) doubling percussion* Clarinet in Bb Violin Violoncello * An iron glasses case covered in faux-leather, resting on a non-resonant surface like a book. Use the eraser end of a pencil as a beater. The percussive sound should be taut and deadened, akin to hearing a tiny snare drum through a wall or ceiling. If acquisition of a glasses case is not possible, choose an alternative of similarly minute size and sound quality. The sound should only just permeate the rest of the ensemble’s dynamic.

If possible the ensemble should all be wearing mouse ears like those seen below.

Seating: The seating formation should be as compact as it is possible to be without impeding the actions of another ensemble member. The mezzo-soprano should not be positioned in front of the rest of the ensemble as a soloist. Instead, find an equitable, close setup. You are an ensemble of mice.

Composer’s Note: “As the first stars came out, Coraline finally allowed herself to drift into sleep, while the gentle upstairs music of the mouse circus spilled out on to the warm evening air, telling the world that the summer was almost over” Neil Gaiman, Coraline Mr. Bobo lives upstairs from Coraline. He trains a mouse circus to sing and play but explains that the mice refuse to play the songs that he writes for them. I’m thinking of this piece as a part of their nonconformist repertoire, as heard through the ceiling above Coraline’s bedroom.
