Family and Interests Matthew grew up in Oakland with one sister. His father, Peter Bissell, spent decades as a Bay Area longshoreman and belonged to the ILWU, while his mother, Nancy Bissell, owned a local clothing store. Today Matthew is the father of a son and a daughter, which he considers his proudest accomplishment, and he has served as head parent for clubs they joined. He is a lifelong fan of baseball, basketball, and football, enjoys fantasy sports, and collects sports memorabilia. He has volunteered with Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Pitzer College.
